New Blog: Eclectic A

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted here on Mustard Seed Collective, but I thought today would be the perfect time to let you know I started a new blog. That’s right, I had to find a place to put all of my favorite images, fashions, art, paper and DIY so I started Eclectic A. A just so happens to stand for Adrienne. I’m Adrienne. We have some new additions posted and more are being added over the next couple of days.

I knew in my heart it was time to let Mustard Seed Collective go for some time now, but it just seems everywhere I look today there is a reference to knowing when to let go and try something new. First here, then here, and well, the fact that I’ve always been an outsider (you know, never really a part of the cool kids) has led me to want to try something new (a new blog or tumblr, perhaps?!). Writing this blog has been a lot of fun and I’ve been able to become friends with a couple of other bloggers and have fun chats with others on Twitter and on other blogs. I was going to wait until the end of the month to do it, but why wait?! You gotta know when to call a spade, a spade. See you in blog land.

Jumping the Broom

May 6th, Mother’s Day… Mark the date on your calendars. I, personally, can’t wait for this movie to come out. Laz Alonso (love that name) and Paula Patton star in this romantic comedy about an engaged couple bringing their very different families together for the first time on the weekend of their wedding. It’s sure to be uptown panache vs. downtown sensibilities and with this cast in the mix it’s sure to have lots of laughs and moments that require a dab of tissue. Are you going to watch this in the theater or wait until the DVD comes out?

The city of Oakland is where I call home and it does not get the credit it deserves. In fact, it doesn’t have the greatest of reputations but I find the naysayers are typically people who have not discovered its gems, some hidden, some more obvious. Like these murals for instance. They’re all an interpretation of the heart and soul, along with the sense of community that makes Oakland what it is. And what you don’t see are the wonderful restaurants, independent shops and condos surrounding it, but there’s plenty of time to put on for my city. Which country, metropolis, city or town do you call home?

Sunbursts & Ceilings

Ah yes, sunbursts. Do you see it up there? Sunbursts are like little stars in the sky, with the sky being your ceiling, of course. I think I like these mounted above even more than if they were on the wall. Not only do they make use of an often neglected part of design, but they do it so glamorously. These are definitely an idea worth interpreting in our own spaces. Also, did you peep the cream chair in the background? Me likey. A lot.

The Bay Area is bright and shiny this weekend and I’m going to do what I do best . . . Change my shoes over and over and over again. So even if I don’t make it out tonight to meet up with my friends I can still change up my sole decor and feel like I’m going somewhere. Or if I only go to the car wash this weekend at least I’m going in style – although my canvas shoes are less style and more comfort (you know you have a pair!). Oh, enough about me, what are your plans for the weekend and if they’re good, can I come?

Apartment Inspiration: Ornate Screens

Have you ever spotted something and just knew you had to have it? That if you didn’t you just knew you’d kick yourself for it later? That’s how I felt when I first moved into my apartment and picked up an Indian screen. It was a deal too good to pass up and according to one of the shop employees I apparently caused heartbreak for those who didn’t beat me to the punch. Well, ever since it has been my headboard and here’s where I got the inspiration…

They look good everywhere, don’t they? Bathrooms, windows, in a corner, as a headboard, you can’t go wrong because they instantly step up the style. Do you have a screen in your home?

Fabulous Mess

I don’t know how Fabulous Mess does it, but they have managed to curate one of the best vintage collections of furniture and decor in all of Etsy. Maybe even beyond. I find myself fawning over nearly all of their additions and clearly many agree because sales are through the roof – and rightfully so. Here are a few of my faves from their shop. I have yet to really carve out a workspace in my home that is dedicated solely to my new endeavor (MSC is all about note cards & such, after all) and my dining table has been deemed my headquarters, so I love getting ideas from other people. Of course, when we look to create that office or workspace function is probably number one, but us decor and interior design lovers definitely require a little -- no, a lot of form. Recently featured on The Coveteur is the creative space and showroom of Dana Lorenz who just so happens to be the force behind the jewelry line, Fenton Fallon. It’s practical yet a few mannequins, a snake print dresser (I feel a DIY coming on) along with some brass styling makes it easy on the eyes. There’s just something about a jewelry designers studio that I love. What is a must have in your creative space?

Is it warm where you are? Yesterday was so warm I had the windows open all day – and it felt good. Sorry to you all out in the cold, your sunshine will come because spring is here. We’re free from winter! Fall is my favorite season, but spring might be my second, especially as it makes its way into summer. It’s time to show some toes, wear bright colors and carry your signature handbag. I’m going to do all three as I make my way up and down the Bay Area over the next few days. What are your plans for the weekend?

I’m going to say it, because it isn’t said enough… Purple is the most beautiful color, ever! Now, before some of you crucify me, I will admit it’s not for everyone, but really, how can you go wrong with those chairs and that humongous lamp? Purple just does it for me. And with pops of lime thrown in, I think I’ve truly fallen in love. What are your thoughts on purple? Beautiful or blah?

I read this and literally laughed out loud because at least once a week someone - usually a man – asks, “why so serious?” or “what’s bothering you?” and truth be told I’m perfectly happy on the inside. I just don’t have one of those shiny, happy faces. So it’s good to know I’m not the only one in the world with a bitch face. Thank you, Kris Atomic. Does your face match how you feel? The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Other than eating our way through Seattle the highlight of my recent trip to the city was a visit to the Experience Music Project whose second floor is all about the man, the myth, the legend that is Jimi Hendrix. There you can get a history lesson on the greatest guitarist of all time. Bet you didn’t know he played with Little Richard and The Staple Singers, toured the Chitlin Circuit and was a member of the U.S. Army. The man had a very full and exciting, yet brief twenty-seven years. The exhibit featured a few of his guitars and a lounge where you can hear snippets of his music, but my most favorite part were the displays of his lyrics and notes written on hotel stationery.

Above is an image of the music legend in 1969 at his London flat. Looking at it makes me realize that Jimi Hendrix was the embodiment of the bohemian lifestyle and proof that I need to get a Kilim rug ASAP. In the meantime, I’ll bask in his musical glory. Where Did I Put It?

Where did I put my (fill in the blank) or better yet, somebody stole my (fill in the blank) are typically what fly out of my mouth when I misplace something, even if I happen to be the only one in my apartment. Yesterday it was my freshly brewed cup of hot black tea that was steeping and steeping, getting stronger and stronger the longer it took for me to find it. See what had happened was I brewed a cup the cheaters way (one minute in the microwave) when I was distracted by a text message and sat the cup down next to the tv. Turns out it was just AT&T telling me my statement is now available. Big deal. General Hospital was on and Mondays are always the best day to watch soaps so the cup of brewing tea just sat there.

It wasn’t until GH ended that I remembered it and even then as I sat staring at the TV willing it to remind me where I had put that cup, that I still didn’t see it, hope and all. I don’t know if that’s what they call a (premature) senior moment or if it’s normal behavior at any age, either way, turns out the tea was really strong but what started out as a hot cup of tea turned out to be a delicious lukewarm substitute. I could never ever ever let a good cup of tea go to waste, y’all. Never. Have you ever lost something and nearly drove yourself crazy trying to find it?

Just Wright

This weekend I am taking a little trip to Seattle and as with all of my recent flights I must have the movie, Just Wright, in my iPhone to fill the flight time. This film is super stylish and features Queen Latifah, Paula Patton and ~~the love of my life,~~ the rapper, Common. This spot is where Common’s character calls home.

It’s filled with art, lots of lighting including sconces and unusual floor lamps, modern seating, plus silver and gold finishes, all of which is against a backdrop of creams, tans and browns with the occasional coral, pink or mauve thrown in for a slight feminine touch. Once outside his city mansion is the hustle and bustle of New York City.

In this film there are a couple of parties and I must say, everyone is dressed perfectly. Queen Latifah has never looked better and Paula Patton is beautiful as usual while adding the occasional pop of color to the set, but it’s the stylish men of the movie that truly steal these party scenes.

Speaking of scenery, there’s plenty of the New York skyline not to mention city landmarks and neighborhoods, in addition to the New Jersey neighborhoods like the one Queen Latifah’s character calls home. Although it’s not a main part of the film, we get to watch as Queen Latifah’s character and her father transform her new home into something special. There’s plenty of drop cloths, door knobs, paint and hardwood floors to go around.

Yes, No, Maybe So? {How Bad Ass Are You?}

No, really, just how bad-ass are you? These shoes represent three different levels of bad-assness: (1) the wilting willow, (2) the side-eye and (3) the hide your kids. The mild version is like a wilting willow – they’re sweet and nice and would never hurt a fly. The moderate version is the girl who has no problem giving the side-eye, but never gets caught up in foolery. And then there’s the severe, the most bad-ass of all, who never backs down from a challenge and when she comes around you better hide your kids. Which level gets the yes, no, maybe so from you?
