Today, I am heading off to my 13th and 14th Phish shows at The Gorge Amphitheatre. I'm proud to say I've caught every show the band has played at The Gorge since Summer Tour 1997 due to the fact that I moved to Eugene in 1994 and graduated from the University of Oregon in `97.

Come to think of it, that's not quite true. I was there when Phish played The Gorge in 2009 but had to skip the second show and boogie on back to my then-hometown of Bend, Oregon in time for a party celebrating my son's 5th birthday. So, actually it will be my 12th and 13th shows at The Gorge. (Shhhh! Just wag it and don't tell anybody. That's just between you and me.)

On a side note, my son was born August 8, 2004. The following evening was the Hampton Coliseum show on the final leg of Summer Tour 2004, which was just a few days before Coventry and The Break Up.

So, in my 18-year career seeing Phish I've missed two shows due to my son's emergence into the world, but that's OK by me. I wouldn't trade the chance to spend time with him for anything. Not even a guaranteed Gamehendge.

The August 1997 Gorge run also was the year they opened with Theme from the Bottom, and when Trey asked Chris Kuroda to turn off the lights so the band could play under the stars--the best version of Harry Hood I've ever witnessed in person then unfolded.

I won't be blogging from the shows; my fingers are looking forward to some time off, being that I work full time as a freelance writer.

If you e-mail photos, or links to photos, of your Gorge experience (or your Couch Tour experience listening to the Gorge run) I'll post them here for all to see.

So, have a great weekend everyone and keep your fingers crossed for a Divided Sky, for there is nothing like seeing that song performed at The Gorge.

Ah, Raleigh. My old stomping grounds and where my son was born. Walnut Creek always is a good vibe. They did a famous Colonel Forbin's there once (8-7-98) ... missed it by one town this time. Wish I was there.

On another note, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band saxophone player Clarence Clemons died today after suffering a stroke on June 12. He used to sit in with the Grateful Dead back in the day. Here is footage of Clarence performing Standing On the Moon with Jerry and the boys. The video isn't great but the music is wonderful.

Second set Phish tribute??? I'm sure they heard ....
Phish settles into Cincinnati tonight for one show at the Riverbend Music Center, one of the oddest looking summer sheds out there, in my opinion. The band tends to play killer shows in Cincinnati for some reason and this one did not disappoint.

Click here to download an audience copy of tonight's sickness, which was taped and transferred by Lenny Stubbe. Of course, you can always purchase a soundboard copy at LivePhish.com

Tonight's show was streaming live at HoodStream.com but the feed dropped out.
Summer Tour 2011 rolls into Pine Knob ... er, sorry, the DTE Energy Music Center. I saw the Grateful Dead at Pine Knob when I was 19 years old. Five people in a two-door Honda Civic driving up from Miami. None of us talk anymore. Good times. But seriously, some venues just aren't right with a corporate name, ie Great Woods.

This is off the subject of tonight's Phish show at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J., but how cool would it be to hear them bust out this song?

Anyway ...

So, last night's show was epic on paper and sounded great live but it didn't exactly reach the peaks we saw Phish scale at Bethel Woods. Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that, in the Phish 3.0 era, it's just good to have them performing period, no matter what they do. You can dissect a show all you want but the fact is any Phish is great Phish.

If you haven't seen it already here is a link to high-def video released by Phish playing Maze last night. You can download last night's show here, or you can purchase a soundboard copy at LivePhish.com. And of course tonight's show is streaming live at HoodStream.com. The audio quality has been excellent so settle in four the 5th night of couch tour and surrender to the flow.
Phish Summer Tour 2011 rolls into the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J. tonight. This is a de facto New York City show as the amphitheatre is just a short drive, maybe 45 minutes, over from Manhattan. Interestingly enough, as of this post the show is not sold out.

Couch Tour 2011 continues over at HoodStream.com. I'll be in the chat room. Stop by and say hello. Did you miss Bethel Woods? Check out a summary of the action here.

Did anyone take advantage of the day off and swing through Princeton to find The Rhombus? If you did, post your story in the comments section below.

While you're waiting for show time, check out the videos of 46 Days, Backwards Down the Number Line and Waves that Phish posted on its Vimeo site. And scroll down on this page for the latest news stories on Phish from around the web.

And as always, I will post a link to download an audience recording of tonight's show once it becomes available. If you want to purchase a soundboard copy head over to LivePhish.com.
A Day Off and a Look Back on Phish at Bethel Woods

<fb:like font="" href="http://thewagger.blogspot.com" send="true" show_faces="false" width="450"></fb:like>
Well, here we are. Memorial Day 2011. The 2010 New Year's Run doesn't seem that long ago in some ways. My winter and spring were busy, and I didn't listen to Phish all that much for the first time since their return at Hampton, except for a two-week stint back in March when I was obsessing on these YouTube videos.

So, when Phish took the stage Friday night at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and I settled in at HoodStream.com for Couch Tour 2011, I wasn't as dialed in to Phish as I normally would be. I was thinking, OK, yeah, a rippin' Chalk Dust Torture to open the summer, maybe an early first set Foam, perhaps some Country Mike, and maybe an Ocelot as Phish got warmed up.

There would be no warm-up show.

Phish signaled what was to come by dropping a first-song-of-the-summer Tweezer that segued into My Friend My Friend. After steamrolling a handful of songs, Stash appeared and like the tornadoes that ravaged the South and Midwest in recent weeks, this one kept gaining momentum, starting quietly, getting darker and darker, adding layers and growing wider until it was a full-fledged spinning beast laying waste to everything and everyone in its path. To give everyone a quick breather Phish then "ran through the motions" on Bouncin' before cranking up Kill Devil Falls, a great version that sailed along psychedelic style like a balloon dancing over the crowd.

Set two started off with the first-set, song-by-song flavor of Carini, Back on the Train and Boogie On Reggae Woman but once the verses ended to Boogie On Phish entered new, free-form territory. It sounded like a tape does when it slows down and the music and voices seem grotesquely stretched out and deep.

THIS IS TRUE HOSE. The likes we have not seen in years.

Finally, they settled into one of the spaciest jams I can remember hearing. There is something different about this one from anything that came before it. Trust me on this. Give it a listen. The free-flowing exploration continued through Waves and the band continued to nail it right up to the final notes of Wading in the Velvet Sea.

So, I figured, OK, that was a killer start to Summer Tour 2011, but they likely will tone it down a little on night two.

Nope.

The second night at Bethel Woods is quite simply one of the best Phish shows I've ever heard since first being introduced to the band back in 1991. It's a face melter and I could go song by song here, reviewing the steps this monster took across my brain, but this show is better to listen to yourself than to hear my opinion. Do yourself a favor and download it.

Put it this way ... when the show ended and the chat room on HoodStream was thinning out I hung around feeling like I do when I witness a mind-blowing show in person. It was orgasmic, nostalgic (as Mr. Minor alluded to) and I didn't want the feeling to end. The crowd sounded like it felt that way, too. After the last note the cheers were more of a long, dull roar than a burst of excitement and applause. One of those, "What the hell just happened?" cheers that only Phish can milk out of a crowd that knows their music all too well. My friends across the country felt the same way; my phone started blowing up a couple of minutes after the show ended with people saying things like, "Did you hear that?" and "That was amazing."

Night Three at Bethel Woods (download it) didn't have the improvisational twists and turns of night two, but it was a solid barn-burner and a classic East Coast ripper of a show. Night three reminded me of the Machine Gun Trey days of the middle 1990s, especially Antelope; it doesn't always reach the highest of high peaks like it used to, but this version received the full-on windup treatment. And of course, to wrap up the entire weekend in a nice little Bag O' Phish, the band bookended the final encore with Tweeprise.

The Summer Tour 2011 circus stops next in Holmdel, N.J., on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. What's next? I'm hoping to hear some new material. Then again, if they continue tearing apart the space-time continuum like they did in Bethel, I don't care what they decide to play as long as they are playing.
Set One brought classic, epic jams in Stash and Kill Devil Falls. Set Two was spacy, reminiscent of second set Grateful Dead. Toward the end of Boogie On Reggae Woman, Trey started slowing down the song and they began pushing into free-form space, sounding noticeably different than just about anything they've done before -- and yes I know that's saying a lot. Boogie On -> Waves -> Prince Caspian -> Cross-eyed and Painless is Phish at their finest.

I suggest downloading a soundboard copy from LivePhish.com or an audience recording courtesy via Mr. Minor's No Spoilers series and checking it out yourself.

Also, Phish is posting videos of one song from each night of summer tour. You can watch them here.

And now, on to night two of Phish's 2011 Summer Tour. "THIS IS MIKE'S HOUSE!" Then they went to Fish's house. "This is what it sounded like at Fishman's house." And Fish played the drum roll to start Harry Hood.
Some people say it's too late already to announce and plan a festival this close to the dates, making this bad information. Time will tell folks. It's fun to speculate either way.

Rumor also has it that KOTO.org, Telluride Community Radio, will broadcast the Phish show live this August. Stayed tuned for more details ...

Tonight's show kicks off a four-show run for Phish -- two nights at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, New Jersey, and two nights at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.

Back to the current tour ... two nights ago in Massachusetts at the Great Woods Amphitheatre (now known as the Comcast Center), Phish laid down what arguably is the hottest show this summer. From the first notes of breakout cover Lit O Bit to the final G chord in Loving Cup, Phish, especially Trey, was on fire. Definitely, in my opinion, worth downloading an official soundboard copy from LivePhish.com

Hopefully, there will be a live stream of tonight's show over at HoodStream.com -- last year when Phish stopped in Camden the live stream failed, but with another year of experience under their belts, and better equipment, hopefully the i8 (the nickname given to the original eight founders of HoodStream.com) will find a way to push on through (the day).
Instead, we got a killer show with Phish dipping into their bag of oldies to please the "hometown crowd," as SPAC is the closest the band comes to playing its hometown of Burlington, Vermont.

Of course, the live stream of tonight's show was available at HoodStream.com and they had killer sound quality tonight -- ta boot, ta boot.

Next up on June 22, the Great Woods Amphitheatre, now known as the "Comcast Center," in Mansfield, Massachusetts, located just about half way between Providence, Rhode Island and Boston, followed by two nights in Camden and two nights at the Merriweather Post Pavilion -- which, to me, is one of my top five favorite places to see a show ... as long as you get inside early enough to grab a spot on the lawn that allows you to see the stage directly.
Blistering, but at the same time, a little choppy. What was perhaps the most interesting part of the show was that Phish pulled out a lot of Cow Funk throughout the night in places where you wouldn't so much expect to hear it, like the whole Mike's Groove segment (at least, that's the way I heard it).

And then there was the whole Sand -> The Horse portion of set two. People in the HoodStream.com chat rooms were complaining that it sounded awful, but what was missed on them was the fact the Phish has never, in the band's entire history, played Sand -> The Horse. Phish did, on 12/18/1999 in Hampton, break out a Horse -> Sand -> Silent in the Morning. I know I've heard that show but don't recall that segue at all. Sounds like I need to go back and listen again -- perhaps all of us do. Here is a link to download that show if you don't already have a copy.

Of course, you can listen to a live stream of tonight's Phish show (hopefully) from the Comcast Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut over at HoodStream.com

And speaking of HoodStream.com, if you have not read it already Joephus, one of the original eight founders and operators of HoodStream.com, sat down with TheWagger for an interview discussing how the idea of streaming shows live via an iPhone came about, and what it takes for everyone working together to stream each show, each night. It's not as easy as you might think. Click here to read the entire exclusive interview.

SET LIST FOR NIGHT TWO OF PHISH AT THE COMCAST THEATRE IN HARTFORD

SET ONE
Fee, Rift, Wolfman's Brother, *Summer of '89, Foam, Possum, Julius, Reba, Cavern

SET TWO
Halley's Comet -> Light -> Billy Breathes, Tweezer -> Theme From the Bottom -> Harry Hood -> Wading in the Velvet Sea, Stealing Time from the Faulty Plan

ENCORE
Sleeping Monkey -> Tweeprise, **Tweeprise

SHOW NOTES
I don't think anyone saw that Fee opener coming. *New song sung by Trey, with the refrain, "And we danced all night," first time played.**Played a second time for Hershey.

DOWNLOAD THE SHOW
Click here to download an audience recording of tonight's show and hear what it sounded like to stand/dance inside Hartford's Comcast Theatre and hear Phish as the music sounded coming off of the stage, courtesy of Mr. Minor's PhishThoughts.com And if you're really into it, Mr. Minor posts each show without the setlist, so if you haven't seen it yet you can download the show and be surprised as each new song begins and develops.

Or, you can download the official soundboard recording from LivePhish.com for about $10. They've been great about posting the shows for download within about an hour or so of each one Phish show from the 2010 Summer Tour.
