Toronto, August 10, 2023: The next offering from powerhouse creators of "Veere Di Wedding," Ektaa R Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor has been a well-kept secret. Unveiling today as an Official Selection at the esteemed Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2023 is their coming of age comedy "Thank You For Coming".

Handpicked to have its grand Gala world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023 on 15th September 2023 at the Roy Thomson Hall, the laugh riot entertainer is the only Hindi feature film to have a gala premiere this year at TIFF!

Directed by Karan Boolani and written by Radhika Anand and Prashasti Singh, The film stars Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila, Shibani Bedi, Pradhuman Singh Mall, Natasha Rastogi, Gautmik, Sushant Divgikar, Saloni Daini, Dolly Ahluwalia, Karan Kundrra & Anil Kapoor in a special appearance. The film is slated to have its theatrical release worldwide on the 6th of October 2023.

Stratford Festival announces casting for 2023 season

November 1, 2022… Just as the 2022 season comes to a close, work for the 2023 season is getting underway at the Stratford Festival. Creative teams for next year’s productions are coming into place and the casting department is busy confirming key roles for the season. Soon the workshops will be abuzz with artisans building the season’s sets, props and costumes.

“This is a bittersweet moment. We have just closed our 2022 season, which feels like something of a miracle,” says Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino. “We feel enormous gratitude to our staff and company for the outstanding work they did to make this season come to life despite the many obstacles that Covid placed in our path. I was so proud of the work on our stages and all the efforts that made that work possible. And to our patrons, who returned to Stratford despite ongoing public health concerns, we are forever grateful. Now, we turn our thoughts to 2023 and hope today’s exciting news will entice even more theatre lovers to Stratford next season.”

Programmed around a theme of Duty vs Desire, next season features King Lear, Rent, Much Ado About Nothing, Les Belles-Soeurs, Monty Python’s Spamalot, A Wrinkle in Time, Frankenstein Revived, Grand Magic, Richard II, Wedding Band, Casey and Diana, Women of the Fur Trade and Love’s Labour’s Lost.

“Mark Twain once said that ‘history never repeats itself, but it does often rhyme.’ And so it gives us endless variations on recurring themes – themes that, since the dawn of drama, artists have explored on stage,” says Cimolino. “The works on our 2023 playbill all seem to me to reflect in some way the age-old tension highlighted anew by the challenges of the pandemic era: the tension between duty and desire. As we navigate a world reshaped by the past years, these plays may help clarify the importance of finding a balance between pursuing our own wants, needs and dreams and helping others fulfill theirs.”

Tickets for the 2023 season will go on sale to Members of the Stratford Festival beginning November 6, 2022. Early-bird sales are open to everyone on Monday, December 12.

Acclaimed actor Paul Gross returns to the Festival in 2023 to play King Lear, 23 years after playing Hamlet on the same stage in the memorable 2000 production. He will be joined by Michael Blake as Edmund, Déjah Dixon-Green as Regan, Anthony Santiago as Gloucester, Tara Sky as Cordelia, and Gordon Patrick White as the Fool.

The cast also includes Austin Eckert (King of France), Allison Edwards-Crewe, John Kirkpatrick, Josue Laboucane, Devin MacKinnon (Oswald) and Rylan Wilkie (Duke of Cornwall).

King Lear is directed by Kimberley Rampersad, with set designer Judith Bowden, costume designer Michelle Bohn, lighting designer Chris Malkowski, composer Sean Mayes and sound designer Miquelon Rodriguez.

Perhaps Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, King Lear is the story of an aging king, who, in demanding a show of devotion from his three daughters, leaves his kingdom divided, his family destroyed, the faithful banished and the hateful left to wreak inhuman havoc in the realm.

Jonathan Larson’s moving and evocative musical Rent will feature Andrea Macasaet as Mimi Marquez, Robert Markus as Mark Cohen and Kolton Stewart as Roger Davis.

The production includes Jahlen Barnes as Benjamin Coffin III, Nestor Lozano Junior as Angel Dumott Schunard, and Erica Peck as Maureen Johnson.

The cast is rounded out by Celeste Catena, Nick Dolan (Gordon), Christine Desjardins (swing), Kelly Holiff (Mark’s mom), Masini McDermott and Danielle Verayo.

Rent will be directed by Thom Allison with choreographer Marc Kimelman, music director Franklin Brasz, set designer Brandon Kleiman, costume designer Ming Wong, lighting designer Michael Walton and sound designer Joshua Reid.

Set in Manhattan in the 1990s and inspired by Puccini’s opera La Bohème, the musical follows a group of young East Village artists, performers and philosophers as they struggle through the hardships of poverty, societal discord and the AIDS epidemic in the search for life, love and art. With a song list that includes the iconic “Seasons of Love,” Rent tells a story as relevant today as when it took Broadway by storm more than 25 years ago.

Playing alongside the warring duo are Michael Blake as Don John, Austin Eckert as Claudio, Allison Edwards-Crewe as Hero, and Anthony Santiago as Antonio.

Fighting for any power in their suffocating lives, the women yell, backstab, dream and steal in grand theatrical style.

Spamalot offers up a hefty share of irreverence in a hilarious spoof of the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they go in search of the Holy Grail. Festival favourite Geraint Wyn Davies returns to the Festival to play Otto Marvuglia in Eduardo De Filippo’s dark comedy Grand Magic, in a new translation by John Murrell.

The production features Sarah Orenstein as Zaira Marvuglia.

The cast also includes David Collins (Arturo Recchia), Sarah Dodd (Signora Marino), Jordin Hall (Mariano D’Albino), Kim Horsman (Matilde), Stephen Jackman-Torkoff (Roberto Magliano), Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah (Signora Locascio), Andrew Robinson and Steve Ross (Gervasio Penna).

This funny, thought-provoking and deeply moving play will be presented in a new English translation by John Murrell. In it, we find Otto Marvuglia, a once master illusionist, reduced to performing magic for money at a seaside resort. When one of his tricks seems to go awry, a guest tumbles into a world of illusion as another escapes an unhappy reality.

Stephen Jackman-Torkoff will take on the title role in a revolutionary new adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard II by Brad Fraser, directed and conceived by Jillian Keiley.

He plays alongside David Collins as John of Gaunt, Jordin Hall as Bolingbroke and Sarah Orenstein as Helen Percy, Earl of Northumberland.

The cast also includes Sarah Dodd (Lady Scroope), Mateo Galindo Torres, Charlie Gallant (Lord Willoughby), Marcus Nance (Abbot of Westminster), Andrew Robinson (Sir John Bushy), Steve Ross (Bishop of Carlisle) and Danielle Verayo.

The production will be choreographed by Cameron Carver, with set design by Michael Gianfrancesco, costume design by Bretta Gerecke and lighting design by Leigh Ann Vardy.

This is the story of a king who believes that God gives him the right to live above the rules and who ultimately suffers the consequences. The adaptation is set in a time of new-found freedom that is soon crushed – the late 1970s and early ’80s: when lives were lived at great volume against a suffocating strain of conservatism and fear. Fraser’s adaptation uses Shakespeare’s text for Richard II and draws from other Shakespeare works as well.

Wedding Band

Cyrus Lane and Antonette Rudder will play the leading couple, Herman and Julia, in Alice Childress’s Wedding Band, directed by Sam White. They will be joined by Maev Beaty as Annabelle and Lucy Peacock as Herman’s Mother.

The cast also features Joella Crichton (Lula Green), Kevin Kruchkywich (the Bell Man) and Micah Woods (Nelson).

The creative team includes set designer Richard Morris, costume designer Sarah Uwadiae, lighting designer Kathy Perkins, composer Beau Dixon and sound designer Debashis Sinha.

This stellar work, written with great precision and powerful storytelling, gives an emotional portrayal of a relationship between a Black seamstress, Julia, and a white baker, Herman, in the shadow of the First World War and the 1918 flu epidemic in Charleston, South Carolina. The couple's deep love and commitment face the cruel racism of the Deep South in a revealing portrayal of interracial love. They are forced to navigate the societal racism of laws and culture, along with heartbreaking judgment from their own families and communities.

Casey and Diana is set in 1991, as the Toronto AIDS hospice, Casey House, prepares for the historic visit of Diana, Princess of Wales. This potent and moving drama vividly captures a moment in time when a rebel Princess, alongside less famous caregivers and advocates, reshaped the course of a pandemic – and how those stricken by the virus found hard-won dignity, community and love in the face of astonishing hardship.

Women of the Fur Trade

Frances Koncan’s funny and insightful play Women of the Fur Trade will feature Jenna-Lee Hyde as Cecilia, with Keith Barker as Lous Riel and Nathan Howe as Thomas Scott.

It will be directed by Yvette Nolan with set designer Samantha McCue, costume designer Jeff Chief and lighting designer Michelle Ramsay.

It is set in eighteen hundred and something-something, somewhere upon the banks of a Reddish River in Treaty One Territory, where three very different women with a preference for 21st-century slang sit in a fort sharing their views on life, love and the hot nerd Louis Riel. This lively historical satire of survival and cultural inheritance shifts perspectives from the male gaze onto women’s power in the past and present through the lens of the rapidly changing world of the Canadian fur trade.

Love’s Labour’s Lost

The art gallery covers a vast plethora of emotions in women during their most vulnerable moments in life but also depicting their resilience and strength. With lines like ’I know I will burn till the fire burns in me’ to ‘I fear remaining an outline’, a woman’s path though is strewn with monotony, anonymity and most often being almost a non existent entity, these poems are an amazingly brilliant saga of how she carves out her own niche.

From the women as Shakti of the poet Mandira Ghosh and the power that comes from truth, bliss, and consciousness, Anna Yin’s poem speaks volumes about bonding with nature, missing someone loved and the entwining of all three. In Vedas, women are symbols of Prakriti, mother nature. Nature becomes part of us and we derive strength from nature.
Alka Tyagi’s poem leads us to the various phases of awakening, of truth around us!
If Zohra Zoberi’s poem is about empowered moments in an immigrant woman’s life, Sangeeta’s poem clearly states in a subtle manner the power of saying NO to others whereas undeniably stating that the real happiness lies in giving happiness to others.

It was indeed delightful and touching to read, as the poets have woven their poems delicately with words of wisdom and expressions so vivid and diverse; yet so powerful!

Pollution pricing puts money in your pocket while fighting climate change

On Friday Oct 14 th , Ontarians will see a payment appear in their bank accounts: your fall

Climate Action Incentive rebate from the federal government. How much can you expect? Well,

for a family of 4 here in Ontario, you’re getting $186.25. And this is just one of the payments

coming to you every 3 months, worth $745 total for the year for a family of four. If you’re not

registered for online submission of your taxes that’s no problem, it just means you’ll be getting a

cheque in the mail soon, instead of direct deposit.

So what is the federal Climate Action Incentive? These are the proceeds from the price on carbon

pollution. Our federal Government has designed a system that puts money back in your pockets

while making sure it isn’t free to pollute anywhere in this country. That’s win-win – not only do

you have more money for things like groceries or childcare, our approach also helps fight climate

change by making big polluters pay their fair share. In fact, most families get more money back

than they pay and those payments are set to increase in the coming years.

Today, these rebate cheques are under threat from new Conservative Party leader Pierre

Poilievre. Despite the fact that Canada is recognized worldwide for our system which prices

pollution while supporting families, Poilievre wants to scrap these rebate payments.

With the autumn season upon us and Parliament Hill back in session, Mr. Poilievre is making a

lot of noise about pollution pricing. He has ditched the policy of his predecessor, Erin O’Toole,

who recognized the importance of putting a price on pollution. And, true to form, Mr. Poilievre

is attacking pollution pricing while ignoring the rebates supporting Canadians and failing to offer

any alternative environmental plan.

Nor will you hear Mr. Poilievre talk about the massive cleanup costs of extreme weather events

that are increasingly frequent with climate change. And you’ll never hear him discuss the great

new jobs and investment being spurred across Ontario by the clean-tech boom that’s underway.

And that’s why pollution pricing works: it puts a cost on the thing we don’t want – pollution –

and adds value to the things we do want – clean air, reliable, affordable clean energy and

sustainable jobs.

Pricing pollution is a key part of our comprehensive plan to tackle climate change. In Ontario,

our Government is also supporting the growth of the zero-emission vehicle industry. We are at a

tipping point for electric vehicles, and we’ve been partnering with auto-manufacturers like the

Ford plant in Oakville and the Stellantis plants in Windsor and Brampton to create and protect

good jobs.

Your federal government is focused on being in your corner - delivering a clean environment,

and the good, sustainable jobs that come with the clean energy economy for your community.

And as we do, we’re making sure that it’s not free to pollute in Canada and that you have more

money in your pockets every year.

In Net Zero Show UN Young Leader for the SDGs Discusses Competencies Learned from a Life in Climate Activism

Youth social entrepreneur Udit Singhal reflects on non-traditional education gained from a life dedicated to climate justice.

Young social entrepreneurs continue to be torchbearers for the climate movement. In Net Zero Speaks with Udit Singhal, Climate Activist Priyanka Prakash interviews sustainability champion Udit Singhal. Singhal is the founder of Glass2Sand, an environmentally-friendly "carbon-negative" initiative and "no glass to landfills" movement that he established in 2018 at age 16. He was recognized for his contributions and selected as a UN Young Leader for the SDGs 2020-22 at 17. Pedagogical experts have continued to argue that social entrepreneurship provides learners with critical competences to flourish in a 21st century world. Singhal reflects in Net Zero on the valuable knowledge and skills he gained from his journey so far.

"You must muster the courage to move through the hurdles to chart the way forward," says Singhal. "I've learned that you can't just wait for something to happen. You have to lead people your way, and I've also had the opportunity to strategize closely with various UN organizations to encourage solution-driven youth-led Climate Action."

October 6, 2022… One of the most significant Canadian theatrical events is coming to the screen this month. The Stratford Festival's 2021 production of Edward Albee's Three Tall Women, featuring Martha Henry in her final, tour-de-force performance, will be available for a limited time in Canada on CBC, CBC Gem and Stratfest@Home.

"Martha's final transcendent performance was given in the face of her own death," says Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino. "It is a potent distillation of her strength, fierce intelligence and boundless talent. Sadly we shall not look upon her like again."

At the height of the pandemic Henry starred in an unforgettable production of Three Tall Women. It was to be her final performance; she died just 12 days after the production closed on October 9. Now this remarkable performance is available for home viewing for a limited time directed for the screen by Barry Avrich and produced by Melbar Entertainment Group.

"To immortally capture this powerful final performance by theatre royalty was a privilege and undoubtedly one of the most emotional experiences of my career," says Avrich.

Directed for the stage by Diana Leblanc, and also featuring Lucy Peacock, Mamie Zwettler and Andrew Iles, the production was captured live on September 16, 2021.

As the stage production occurred during pandemic restrictions, only three thousand people were able to see the play live in Stratford. Now the Festival is able to bring this unforgettable production to all of Canada, through a one-time special arrangement with the Estate of Edward Albee in acknowledgment of the final performance of Martha Henry.

The production premières on Sunday, October 16, at 2 p.m. (2:30 NT) on CBC and will also stream free on CBC GEM.

It will be available on Stratfest@Home, the Festival's subscription-based streaming platform for 12 months beginning on October 16.

Len Cariou to receive Stratford Festival's Legacy Award

Gala to be held Monday at Toronto's Four Seasons Hotel

September 8, 2022… Actor Len Cariou will be this year's recipient of the Stratford Festival's Legacy Award. It will be given at a gala in Toronto's Four Season's Hotel on Monday, September 12.

"I have such enormous admiration for Len Cariou," says Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino, "and I am so very pleased that we can recognize his outstanding contributions to theatre with this Legacy Award. The depth and versatility he shows as an actor is second to none. Here at the Festival he performed some of the greatest classical roles, and on Broadway he created two of the most unforgettable musical figures in modern theatrical history. We were very fortunate indeed that Len not only came to Stratford to build his career, but also returned as a leading player, generously mentoring younger actors while continuing to grow within the Stratford company."

Cariou did six seasons at the Stratford Festival, coming here from Winnipeg in the early 1960s and returning in the early 1980s. From 1962 to 1964, he performed in 12 productions including as Cléonte in Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Longaville in Love's Labour's Lost and Servilius in Timon of Athens.

After Stratford, Cariou joined Artistic Director Tyrone Guthrie and other Stratford Festival artists at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, newly launched in 1963. He made his Broadway debut in 1968 in The House of Atreus, directed by Guthrie

Cariou went on to star in more than a dozen Broadway productions, famously originating the role of Fredrik Egerman in A Little Night Music (winner of 1973's Tony for Best Musical), and of Sweeny Todd, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1979. In 1977, he recreated the role of Fredrik Egerman in the film of A Little Night Music, opposite Elizabeth Taylor.

Cariou then returned to Stratford for the 1981 and 1982 seasons, playing the title role in Coriolanus, Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew, Prospero in The Tempest, Brutus in Julius Caesar and Major Sergius Saranoff in Arms and the Man.

Cariou has hundreds of film and TV credits and is perhaps most widely known today for playing Henry Reagan opposite Tom Selleck in Blue Bloods, the hit CBS series that has been running since 2010. He appeared in several episodes of Murder She Wrote with Angela Lansbury, his Tony-winning co-star in Sweeney Todd.

He has also appeared in Star Trek: Voyager, Damages, The West Wing, Law & Order, Brotherhood and The Outer Limits. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his portrayal of Franklin Roosevelt in HBO's Into the Storm.

Cariou is a Member of the Order of Canada and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2004.

Eric McCormack to host tribute

Monday's Legacy Gala will be hosted by Eric McCormack, who was presented with the award in 2017. It will feature tribute performances by André Sills, Dan Chameroy, Robert Ball and Sandra Caldwell, accompanied by Franklin Brasz.

The Stratford Festival launched its Legacy Award to honour important figures from its history. The first award was presented to Christopher Plummer in 2011. Since then it has gone to Dame Maggie Smith, William Shatner, Martha Henry, Colm Feore, Eric McCormack, Gordon Pinsent, Megan Follows and Andrea Martin.

The Legacy Gala is co-chaired by Barry Avrich, Wendy Pitblado and David Simmonds.

Government reaches target of 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021

December 23, 2021—Ottawa—With the significant exception of Indigenous people, all Canadians originally come from somewhere else. The story of immigration fills many chapters in the history of Canada—including the most recent one. To support Canada's post-pandemic recovery and chart a more prosperous future, the Government of Canada set a target of welcoming 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021, as part of the 2021–2023 Immigration Levels Plan.

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced that Canada has reached its target and welcomed more than 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021. Surpassing the previous record from 1913, this is the most newcomers in a year in Canadian history.

This historic achievement is particularly significant in the face of the pandemic's many challenges. From closed borders to domestic lockdowns, global migration has been upended by COVID-19. But the employees of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) rose to the occasion and processed a record half a million applications in 2021. To achieve this, IRCC added resources, embraced new technology and brought more processes online. These changes are all permanent improvements to Canada's immigration system.

As we continue to struggle with the pandemic, we made the most of the talent already within our borders. The majority of these new permanent residents were already in Canada on temporary status. Most notably, we launched new programs to engage essential workers, health care professionals, international graduates and French-speaking newcomers. Family reunification is another pillar of our system, and we reunited spouses and children while enabling more families to sponsor parents and grandparents. Finally, with many countries closing their doors to refugees, we continued to offer the world's most vulnerable shelter in Canada.

Canada needs immigration to drive our economy, enrich our society and support our aging population. One in 3 Canadian businesses is owned by an immigrant, and 1 in 4 health care workers is a newcomer. Business, labour market experts and economists all agree that immigration creates jobs, spurs innovation and helps address labour shortages. New Canadians contribute to communities across our country every day, and we will continue welcoming more of them as we build the Canada of tomorrow.

Quick facts

· The number of permanent residents Canada welcomes each year is based on the annual Immigration Levels Plan, which was tabled in Parliament on October 30, 2020.

· In 2019, Canada welcomed more than 341,000 permanent residents. Despite the challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada also admitted over 184,500 new permanent residents over the course of 2020.

· Immigration accounts for almost 100% of Canada's labour force growth. Roughly 75% of Canada's population growth comes from immigration, mostly in the economic category. By 2036, immigrants will represent up to 30% of Canada's population, compared with 20.7% in 2011.

· Immigration addresses labour shortages in key sectors such as health care. Immigrants make up 37% of pharmacists, 36% of physicians, 39% of dentists, 23% of registered nurses, and 35% of nurse aides and related occupations.

· The Economic and Fiscal Update proposes new measures to support a robust and resilient recovery, including an $85 million investment to reduce backlogs in Canada's immigration system, speed up the process of citizenship, reunite families, and welcome people who can help address Canada's labour shortages.

Premiering just a few weeks ago and now available for streaming on the MWE website, the series is about six young women from around the globe working in underrepresented industries (15% or less of a given profession having women in key positions) and their journey, hardships, impact and vision for future generations.

"I'm so excited to debut Wonder Women: Shaping the Future to global audiences," comments founder Christina Rose. "The series has been a true labor of love for me and everyone involved, and I cannot wait to share the stories of these amazing women with the whole world." Her global focus is part of the new Hollyworld movement.

Tianyi's story is especially unique and hit me at the core. As a child of immigrants, she digs deep in this episode about the sacrifices her parents made. Born in Shanghai, she was raised in New Zealand from a young age, experiencing months at a time being away from her parents. In one powerful scene, she articulately explains the sadness as she was separated from her parents for months at a time, which is eternity for a young child.

These powerful dynamics and immigrant stories were surprisingly just as much of a focus in Christina's well crafted episode. Christina ensured we saw Tianyi "on top of her game", explaining the compromises she makes as she leads groups of musicians in an orchestra, who have ideas different from hers. In addition, this gender dynamic was fascinating and displayed in a powerful scene where one of her violin players challenged her on decisions she made.

What was most impactful in that scene was Tianyi's calm in the midst of emotion coming out from that disagreement. Artists and musicians have strong emotions, but that scene showed Tianyi's professionalism and calmness, a trait displayed by the most successful.

But Tianyi, despite all her technicalities, was not depicted one dimensionally as a stoic workhorse. It was the powerful story of identity and self acceptance that took Tianyi to the next level, including finding the piece that catalyzed her into finding her own identity and voice in this male-dominated field.

She spoke confidently, as one who has truly transcended roadblocks in her younger days, about growing up wanting blonde hair and blue eyes and waking up to her black hair and brown eyes, never getting her wish. This is an amazing dynamic that is the common thread of many Asian Americans and those who grew up in places like New Zealand, Australia or other Anglo-centric societies. Tianyi's strength in speaking up and her pride over traditional Chinese music she grew up with from her parents, as well as her creativity in combining it with the Western music that also became part of her identity, was powerful and displayed in a final beautiful piece that Christina Rose chose to feature as the climax of the episode. It was a victory dance of sorts, displaying Tianyi's incredible maturity and talent culminating in this fusion piece.

Tianyi was not ignoring of her fear, but instead, embraced it. She said so powerfully, "I choose to lean into my fear, and that's where growth begins." Such wise words in a society today that can choose to paralyze itself through negativity and perceptions of victimhood. Tianyi's emotional intelligence is the key to her success.

Finally, it was a sense of daring to be different that gave her the audacity to pursue this male dominated field, as she rattled off names of the top conductors in the world, all male. She deserves a place there, but thus far it's been uncharted territory. We are excited to see her on this journey as she defines her own path, after finding her personal power, so perfectly captured in Christina Rose's great work and tribute to global talent and impact. Two thumbs up.

Samantha Thompson is an archivist at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum, and Archives where she is particularly interested in revealing the records and lives of ordinary people. She has also worked on collections at McMaster University and the Dundas Museum & Archives. Before training as an archivist, Samantha completed a doctorate in the history of philosophy, and taught in academia.

NEW COMMISSIONED VIDEO INSTALLATIONS AT VENICE BIENNALE 2022

Fondazione In Between Art Film is pleased to announce Penumbra, its first exhibition opening to the public on 20 April 2022 at the Ospedaletto and Church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti in Venice on the occasion of the 59th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia.

Curated by Alessandro Rabottini and Leonardo Bigazzi—respectively Artistic Director and Curator at the Fondazione—Penumbra will feature a series of new video and filmic productions commissioned to Karimah Ashadu (1985, UK), Jonathas De Andrade (1982, Brazil), Aziz Hazara (1992, Afghanistan), He Xiangyu (1986, China), Masbedo (Nicolò Massazza, 1973 and Iacopo Bedogni, 1970, Italy), James Richards (1983, UK), Emilija Škarnulytė (1987, Lithuania), and Ana Vaz (1986, Brazil). All eight works deal in different ways with pressing contemporary issues and are commissioned and produced by Fondazione In Between Art Film, an initiative founded by Beatrice Bulgari.

The exhibition Penumbra, the title of which evokes a space of partial illumination, takes inspiration from the rarefied atmosphere of Venice and the hybrid architecture of the Ospedaletto and Church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti, and turns its architecture into a cinematic machine. The show stages a reflection on moving images as a space of material and metaphorical transformation. Penumbra showcases the Fondazione's mission to promote the culture of moving images and support international artists, institutions and theorists that explore the dialogue between disciplines and time-based media.

Beatrice Bulgari, President of Fondazione In Between Art Film, said: "As a passionate advocate of moving images and patron of institutions such as MAXXI Museum, Tate Modern, the Venice Biennale, and dOCUMENTA, I created Fondazione In Between Art Film in 2019 to formally extend this support directly to international artists, curators and writers working in the field of moving images. Our commitment is increasingly focused on commissioning and producing original works: being in close contact with the artists through the process of realising their visions feeds into the Fondazione's mission to further the role and potential of the moving image in our time. Venice is a unique city and its Biennale is an international stage, which makes it a natural choice for our first exhibition. I am pleased to bring eight new commissions to the attention of the global public, with the hope of contributing to the cultural life of the city as well as to the debate on some of the most pressing issues of our times."

Exploring the areas of the Complesso dell'Ospedaletto where these different times and functions have unexpectedly layered, the works featured in Penumbra propose a reflection on penumbral states of vulnerability and immunity, memory and history, truth and fiction, and visibility and opacity, within the current landscape of global transformations. The exhibition design by Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli and his studio 2050+ reflects on the history of the location whilst also spatialising the curatorial concept.

Built in 1517 as a temporary structure to shelter destitute people, the Ospedaletto soon became one of the most important hospitals in Venice. Its temporary structures gradually gave way to permanent wards and a church, the design of which was influenced by Andrea Palladio. Over the centuries, the Complesso dell'Ospedaletto was reworked following contemporary tastes: from Baroque interventions by Baldassare Longhena onto the church facade to decorations by some of the most famous artists of the time, such as Giambattista Tiepolo. Further additions included a courtyard and loggia, again designed by Longhena, a spiral staircase designed by Giuseppe Sardi, and an elliptical concert hall decorated with illusionistic paintings by Tiepolo's pupil Jacopo Guarana. This stratification of architectures was accompanied by various changes of purpose that continued up until recently when the Complesso dell'Ospedaletto was the site of a retirement house before becoming a cultural venue thanks to Ospedaletto Contemporaneo promoted by Venews Arts.

Alessandro Rabottini, Artistic Director, and Leonardo Bigazzi, Curator, of Fondazione In Between Art Film, said: "The spaces of the Complesso dell'Ospedaletto evoke a polyphony of stories, times and functions. For centuries, this has been a place for care and hope, and today its architecture manifests multiple narratives stratified over time. Starting from this very special context, the exhibition Penumbra brings together eight new video installations commissioned from as many international artists.

These works accompany us through the multiple meanings that the concept of a 'grey area' brings forth, telling of transitional states and transformational spaces: from dark to light, from human to non-human, from history to fiction, and from truth to uncertainty. From the literal interpretation of 'penumbra' as the effect of a solar eclipse on the Earth, we move to the metaphorical interpretation of a space in which the demarcation between opposing categories proves to be ambiguous and fallacious. The title of the exhibition is also a reference to the condition of absence of light, which is necessary for moving images to be visible. We could not have imagined a better context than Venice for an exhibition made up of both darkness and sudden flashes. We look forward to continuing to show these works in different contexts in the future."

Penumbra will be accompanied by a cross-disciplinary public programme curated by Bianca Stoppani and Paola Ugolini—respectively Editor and Curator at the Fondazione—that will involve the artists featured in the exhibition and expand the conversations around their practice, via panels with international curators and thinkers.

FONDAZIONE IN BETWEEN ART FILM

Fondazione In Between Art Film was founded in Rome in October 2019 with the mission of promoting the culture of moving images and of supporting international artists, institutions and research centres that explore the dialogue between disciplines and the boundaries between film, video, performance and installation. Under the guidance of its founder and president Beatrice Bulgari, Fondazione In Between Art Film aims to contribute to the international artistic debate by furthering the role and potential of moving images in our time.

The Fondazione continues and expands the work of the production company In Between Art Film, which from 2012 to 2019 supported video and filmic productions by important international artists and directors such as Vanessa Beecroft, Pierre Bismuth, William Kentridge, Diego Marcon, Shirin Neshat, and Orhan Pamuk; as well as Angela Ricci Lucchi/Yervant Gianikian for dOCUMENTA 14; Adelita Husni-Bey and Anna Franceschini for the Italian pavilions at the Venice Biennale, respectively in 2017 and in 2019; and Yuri Ancarani, Jordi Colomer, and Masbedo for Manifesta 12 in Palermo. ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES

Karimah Ashadu (b. 1985, UK) is a British-Nigerian artist who lives and works between Hamburg and Lagos. Ashadu's practice concerns the perception of self and place, as well as the concepts of labour and patriarchy relating to the socio-economic context of Nigeria and West Africa. Her work has been exhibited and screened in institutions such as Kunstverein, Hamburg; Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Leipzig; MoMA, New York; and Center d'Art Contemporain Geneva. Ashadu received the ars viva award (2020) and the Contemporary art prize (2020), Rotary Club. She also received awards at festivals such as the Ann Arbor Film Festival, European Media Art Festival, and Euro Video. Her work is part of the public collections of MoMA, New York; and Fonds Municipal d'Art Contemporain de la Ville de Genève (FMAC). In 2020, Ashadu founded her film production company Golddust by Ashadu, which specializes in artists' films on black culture and African discourses. She was named Abigail R. Cohen Fellow 2021 at the Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination, Paris.

Jonathas De Andrade (b. 1982, Brazil) is an artist who lives and works in Recife. De Andrade uses installations, photographs and videos to explore the effects of power dynamics in society, the evolution of humanity and of ethics with the aim of reflecting on the lasting consequences of modernist culture—something that has profoundly changed Brazilian society due to numerous political decisions made in the twentieth century. His works have been shown in solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; New Museum, New York; The Power Plant, Toronto; Museu de Arte de São Paulo; Museu de Arte do Rio; Musée d'art Contemporain de Montréal; Kunsthalle Lissabon; Centro Cultural São Paulo; among many others. De Andrade's works were also presented at the MOMENTA Biennale de l'image, Montréal (2019); Istanbul Biennial (2019); SITE Santa Fe; 32nd Biennial of San Paolo; Performa15, New York; Biennial of Lyon (2013); New Museum Triennial, New York (2011); and Mercosul Biennial (2009); among many others.

Aziz Hazara (b. 1992, Afghanistan) is an artist working across various media such as video installation, photography, sound, and sculpture. His work addresses the relationship between dichotomies such as proximity and distance, migration and memory, reality and fiction in the context of war on terror, amongst many others. In 2021, Hazara has been awarded with the Future Generation Art Prize. Hazara has shown his works at institutions such as PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv; Hessel Museum of Art - CCS Bard College, New York; Netwerk Aalst; 22nd Biennale of Sydney; and IKOB, Eupen; among others. He has also participated in residential programmes at Colomboscope, Colombo; Embassy of Foreign Artists (EoFA), Geneva; Camargo Foundation, Cassis; and KHOJ - International Artists' Association, New Delhi. He is currently residence artist at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, and a grantee of KfW Stiftung.

He Xiangyu (b. 1986, China) is an artist and film director who lives and works in Berlin. Emerging from a generation of artists who have experienced the radical changes in China's society reverberated within the economy and international relations, He's practice is based on his unique cultural experience. Using a diverse range of media, his work contemplates and echoes the fatalistic micro conflicts on specific individuals in a time of macro geopolitical and historical turbulence. He's works have been shown at institutions such as Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; OCAT Institute, Shanghai; Para Site, Hong Kong; The Drawing Center, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Smart Museum of Art, Chicago; Kadist Foundation, San Francisco; LACMA, Los Angeles; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Castello di Rivoli, Turin, among others. He's works were also presented at the 58th La Biennale di Venezia - China Pavilion, 13th Biennale de Lyon, 10th Shanghai Biennale, 5th Yokohama Triennale, and 8th Busan Biennale. More recently, He Xiangyu was shortlisted for the "Mario Merz Prize" (2021) and the "Future Generation Art Prize" (2014).

Masbedo is Nicolò Massazza (b. 1973, Italy) and Iacopo Bedogni (b. 1970, Italy). They live in Milan and have been working together since 1999, focussing on video art and installations. They express themselves through the language of video, using different formats such as performance, theater, installation, photography and, recently, cinema. Their works have been exhibited in museums, biennials and institutions including ICA, Milan; MAMM - Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow; Manifesta12, Palermo; Center Pompidou / Forum des Images, Paris; Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb; MART, Rovereto; Merz Foundation, Turin; Leopold Museum, Vienna; MAMBA - Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires; Castello di Rivoli, Turin; MAXXI, Rome, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; and 53rd International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia, just to name a few.

James Richards (b. 1983, UK) is an artist who lives and works between Berlin and London. His works have been presented in personal exhibitions at Castello di Rivoli, Turin; Malmö Konsthall; Künstlerhaus Stuttgart; Chapter Arts Center, Cardiff; ICA, London; Bergen Kunsthall; Kunstverein München; Chisenhale Gallery, London, among others. Richards' works have also been featured in group shows at the Camden Arts Center, London; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis; MoMA, New York; Artists Space, New York; and the 55th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia. In 2017, Richards represented Wales at the 57th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia, and in 2014 he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize.

Emilija Škarnulytė (b. 1987, Lithuania) is an artist and film director. Working between documentary and the imaginary, Škarnulytė makes films and immersive installations exploring deep time and invisible structures, from the cosmic and geologic to the ecological and political. Škarnulytė won the Future Generation Art Prize 2019, represented Lithuania at the XXII Triennale di Milano, and was included in the Baltic Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Tate Modern, London (2021); Kunsthaus Pasquart, Biel (2021); Den Frie, Copenhagen (2021); National Gallery of Art in Vilnius (2021); CAC, Vilnius (2015); and Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2017); as well as in group exhibitions at Ballroom Marfa, Seoul Museum of Art, Kadist Foundation and the 1st Riga Biennial. Her films are included in the collections of IFA, Kadist Foundation and Center Pompidou and have been screened at the Serpentine Gallery, London; Pompidou Center, Paris; as well as at film festivals in Rotterdam, Busan and Oberhausen. Škarnulytė is the founder and currently co-directs the Polar Film Lab, a collective in Tromsø that works with analogue cinema, and is a member of the artistic duo New Mineral Collective, which was recently commissioned a new work by the 1st Toronto Biennial.

Ana Vaz (b. 1986, Brazil) is an artist and film director who works with and considers cinema as a tool. Her films, or rather her film-poems, travel through territories and events haunted by the perennial consequences of internal and external forms of colonialism, and their footprints on the earth as well as on human and different from human forms. Her practice can also take the shape of writing, critical pedagogy, installations, film programs or ephemeral events, which are expansions or developments of her films. Her works have been presented, screened and discussed at film festivals, seminars and institutions such as Tate Modern, London; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Jeu de Paume, Paris; LUX Moving Images, London; New York Film Festival - Projections; TIFF Wavelengths, Toronto; BFI, London; Cinéma du Réel, Paris; TABAKALERA, San Sebastián; Whitechapel Gallery, London; MAM - Museum of Modern Art, São Paulo; Sesc-Belenzinho, São Paulo; Matadero, Madrid; Jameel Arts Center, Dubai; Confort Moderne, Poitiers; Savvy Contemporary, Berlin; Sonic Acts, Amsterdam; among others. Vaz is also a founding member of the COYOTE collective along with Tristan Bera, Nuno da Luz, Elida Hoëg and Clémence Seurat, an interdisciplinary group working between ecology and political science through conceptual and experimental formats.

Fit the flu shot into your schedule!

If you haven't done so already, make sure to get your flu shot! Getting the flu shot is the best way to help prevent the flu, and can reduce the severity of your symptoms if you do get the flu.

The flu was virtually non-existent last year, thanks in large part to the public health measures in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This doesn't mean the flu has disappeared. This year, we anticipate a possible flu resurgence with the easing of public health restrictions. An easy way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community it to fit the flu shot into your schedule.

Everyone 6 months of age and older should get the flu shot, especially those at higher risk of complications. This includes people with health conditions such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease, pregnant people, children under 5, and people over 65. Check out Canada.ca/flu to learn more about the flu shot, who is at higher risk of complications from the flu, and how to book your flu shot appointment.

This year, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is especially important for Canadians to get the flu shot. COVID-19 and the flu are caused by different viruses, but both are contagious and can have similar symptoms. Getting a flu vaccine will help prevent people from getting or spreading the flu, and reduce the number of people needing to seek medical care.

In addition to getting vaccinated, reduce the spread of the flu and COVID-19 by continuing the good habits you've put into practice during the pandemic: staying home when sick, improving indoor ventilation, washing hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes, and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces and objects.

Autumn Rowe Earns Four Grammy Nominations for Cosmic Collaboration with Jon Batiste

South Bronx, New York-born singer-songwriter, producer, and DJ Autumn Rowe felt an instant spiritual and musical connection when she heard an emailed demo of Jon Batiste singing her song, "Sing." The only snag was that Autumn knew nothing about him and had no way of contacting the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and BAFTA Film Award-winning artist. Eventually, the stars aligned and Autumn and Jon worked together on Jon's 2021 album, WE ARE, which has now earned Autumn four Grammy nominations.

"In all my life, I'd not heard an artist take an idea of mine and make it come alive the way he did. Jon's New Orleans roots, and authentic vocals, were magnetic to me," Autumn shares. She continues: "We pushed each other during the WE ARE sessions; we worked until exhaustion. In my heart, WE ARE took hundreds of years to make, as this album celebrates those who came before us and made possible for us to be here today."

For her contributions to WE ARE—Autumn co-wrote five of the album's 13 tracks—she has received Grammy Nominations for "Record of the Year" for "Freedom" (a track she also produced); "Album of The Year" for WE ARE; "Best Traditional R&B Performance" for "I Need You;" and "Best R&B Album" for WE ARE.

The story goes: upon hearing Jon's vocal on "Sing," Autumn felt something of a cosmic artistic connection. However, she had no official way of reaching Jon, so she DMed him for months until he finally saw her messages. Then, there was the challenge of synching up the two in-demand artists' schedules, as Jon is the musical director and bandleader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. So Autumn and her production partner, Kizzo, flew to New York, camped out in Jon's dressing room, and wrote and recorded in fevered bursts between Colbert Show tapings. Their artistic connection was instant—just as Autumn thought—and quickly the two composer/artists had created the foundation for WE ARE.

WE ARE is Jon's eighth album, and it was released on Verve Records on March 19, 2021. It's a triumphant and epiphanic artistic entry in the jazz/soul artist's creative continuum. The 13-song album celebrates Black history with forward-thinking musicality. It features a dazzling array of guests, including Mavis Staples, Zadie Smith, PJ Morton, Trombone Shorty, Kizzo, Autumn Rowe, and Steve Jordan. Jon earned 11 Grammy nominations for the album, putting him the lead artist of the 64^th annual awards, ahead of Justin Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo, and Billie Eilish.

Autumn is an artistic renaissance person who, in addition to being a singer-songwriter, producer, and DJ, is also a session singer, vocal coach, a mentor, and something of a TV personality through her appearances on Season 2 of The X Factor, and her five-year stint as the vocal coach on America's Got Talent. Select career highlights include writing the dance anthem behind the 2011 FIFA World Cup "Happiness," featuring Alexis Jordan, and working with such artists as Diana Ross, Dua Lipa, Tori Kelly, Ava Max, Naia Izumi, Jax Jones, Big Freedia, MK, Avicii, Zedd, Alesso, AfroJack, Deadmau5, Alex Newell, Leona Lewis, Digital Farm Animals, Boy George, Jon Bellion, The Knocks, Nick Jonas, Kali Uchis, Kacy Hill, Fifth Harmony, Rodney Jerkins, Sinéad Harnett, FKA Twigs, Lindsey, Stirling, Becky G, and Macy Gray, among many other artists. Autumn is currently signed to Stellar/Sony ATV as a songwriter.

Jon is part of New Orleans royal musical Batiste family which also includes Lionel Batiste of the Treme Brass Band, Milton Batiste of the Olympia Brass Band, and Russell Batiste Jr. He has recorded and performed with such artists as Stevie Wonder, Prince, Willie Nelson, Lenny Kravitz, Ed Sheeran, Roy Hargrove, and Mavis Staples. Jon regularly tours with his band Stay Human, and, since 2015, appears with them nightly as bandleader and musical director on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In 2020, he co-composed the score for the Pixar animated film Soul, for which, alongside co-composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, he earned an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA Film Award.
