No, I didn't quit working out, I just feel like it was getting a little stale. Perhaps I'll pick it up again soon? We shall see.

In any case, I'm linking up with Mrs. Monologues again for Fur Baby Friday.

As I was rushing around to get ready for work this morning, I stopped to look at my darling pups.

Must be a nice life. Get up in the morning, take a peepee, eat some kibble and snuggle up back in bed.

Peanut doesn't even usually take the time to eat in the morning. She goes outside and then dashes upstairs to snuggle up close with hubs. Every.day. Without fail.

Wiggles, well, he's too chubby to make it in the bed by himself, so you can usually find him in his very own bed.

Do they sleep with us? No way. They used to, but then we realized that we weren't getting any sleep from because A. They both stretch out and take up the ENTIRE bed, leaving little room for us humans, and B. It's like a snoring symphony in there. I don't have an issue with it (mostly because I contribute to the snore chorus) but hubs was having some serious insomnia because of it.

Now? Peanut sleeps in her crate at night, downstairs in the living room. And Wiggles sleeps on the living room couch. They know when it's bed time. And Wiggles wakes me up at 6:10 on the dot, every morning, by clawing at the door. He's a cute little alarm clock.

A True Valentine's Day Story of Role Reversal

The following is a true Valentine's Day story.

One year, approximately 4 years into hubs' and my relationship, he made an observation about Valentine's Day.

"Why don't girls ever get their guys flowers? Why do we have to be the ones to do it?"

Great question. Apparently, the answer was not obvious. So, from there, I immediately hatched a brilliant plan. That Valentine's Day, hubs would be receiving no less than a dozen red tulips, right to his office cubicle.

But I couldn't stop there. You see, that just wasn't enough. I called up the florist and asked that, accompanying the flowers, there be a very large, heart-shaped balloon with the words "I LOVE YOU!" for all to see.

After some sleuthing with his office-mates, I found a way to get them delivered to the right place.

So around noon, I get a call from hubs. Thanking me for the flowers. And the giant balloon that hovered over all the cubicles in Cubicle Land. Causing quite a stir, and a lot of unwanted attention.

And although hubs appreciated the effort, he learned that day why guys don't get the flowers. Girls are way better equipped to deal with public love and affection.

Heather - 1
Hubs - 0

The End.

Fitness Friday

It's Fridayyyy! Which means it's time for some fitness.

This has been a busy week in our world. Just a lot of random crap during the week, which has totally thrown off my routine. But, that's life, right?

Last week was the last time for yoga. At least at that studio. Why, you ask? Well, I signed up for a 30-day trial membership for $30. Reasonable, right? I thought so. In what felt like a hot minute, my membership was expired, so I looked into getting the real deal. Then I saw the monthly price tag.

$109
$1-0-9 ... with a four month commitment. Which ends up being (math, oh GOD - WHERE'S THE CALCULATOR) $436. $436 of my hard-earned cash. Nearly as much as we paid for our treadmill. Or a year-long gym membership. No thanks. I'll take Jillian's Yoga Meltdown for $9.99, please.

It's sad though. Because I LOVE the studio I went to. Loved the instructors. Loved the way they calmed me at the end with meditation. Loved looking like a giant horse's ass with Julie while we attempted far too skilled poses. Alas, I just can't justify the cost. Maybe if yoga suctioned the globs of fat from my gut, I'd make the investment.

Also, I just found out that the guy who spoke to us last week at work is also a personal trainer. Brian Boyle. Now, for that? I'd pay $436, plus change. Seriously, watch this video about his story. It's amazing, and inspirational and ALMOST makes me want to run. And he's not hard on the eyes. Just sayin'.

Anywho, here's how the week panned out:

Sunday: Nada - It's the Lord's day afterall.
Monday: 40 minute incline walk, 100 workout
Tuesday: 30 minute incline walk/run, lunges, squats, push ups, crunches
Wednesday: Nothing. (For shame, I know.)
Thursday: 30 minute include walk/run, push ups, crunches
Friday: 40 minute incline walk, push ups, crunches, squats, lunges
Saturday: Does bowling count as exercise? Particularly Duck Pin bowling?

Happy weekend!

Our Love Story

It's February. The month of love. I'm not sure I've ever really divulged the deets on Hubs' and my relationship. So, today? That's what I'm doing. I'm linking up with Becky at From Mrs. to Mama to bring you...Our Love Story.

1. How long have you and your significant other been together?

We're coming up on 9 years in May!

Hubs and I circa 2005 (Hubs is on the left) His college roommate, Rich , is on the right. Hi, Rich!

2. How did you meet? {What's your "love" story?}

Ah, yes. Our love story. Well, it was my junior year of college (2004) and I was coming off a bad break-up with my highschoolturnedcollege boyfriend of 4 years. I came back from that summer single and ready to have some fun for a change.

My best friend and roommate, Pam, introduced me to Nile and his crazy pack of friends (who, now, happen to be some of our best friends.) And from the night I met him, I knew he was something special. Perhaps it was his beer-drinking, visor-wearing, crazy-laughing personality? From that night on, we started hanging out all.the.time. But? He had a on again, off again girlfriend that was going to study abroad. What turned into a crush and flirty relationship with us, quickly faded when he realized that he might still have feelings for her. Fair enough. So we cooled it off.

Then? She came back from overseas and he realized that they didn't have the relationship they once did. So, it was back on for us. We started dating casually. Until he decided that it wasn't time for him to be in a relationship. Gah. Boys, right? Fine. We went our separate ways. He dated some other people, I dated some other people. Most girls would have thrown in the towel. The beginning of our relationship was tumultuous at best.

Then, one Saturday night, it finally began. When he called me to his room, took a deep breath and told me that he loved me and couldn't live without me. Yep. He said it. 21-year-old hubs exclaimed his love for me. And that, my friends, was all she wrote. Senior year we were always together. Then when he got a job in Jersey right after graduation I followed right behind him. Moving into our first apartment (which eventually burned down a mere 4 weeks later, but that's a story for another day.) Six months later? We were engaged with a Pug baby named Wiggles.

3. If married, how long have you been married?

Married for 5 years in May, engaged for 1.5 years, together for 2.5 before that.

At our wedding in May 2007.

4. If you are married, where did you get married at? Big or small wedding?

We had a modest-sized wedding of 100 people in my very small hometown in Central PA. It was the perfect size. The perfect friends, family, music, food. Overall, the perfect day.

5. Do you have any nick-names that you call one another? Do share!

We've never really been big on nicknames. It's just not our bag, (baby!) Ha!

6. Name 3 things you love most about your honey.

His sense of humor. The man can make me laugh like no one else can.
His ability to push me to be a better person.
His butt. True.

7. Tell us how he proposed? Or your ideal proposal?
He proposed on Christmas Day 2005. I'd been asking for an iPod for Christmas, so he was a sneaky little bastard. He got an iPod box and put the ring inside. Wrapped it up and put it under the tree. We were opening gifts on Christmas morning at my parent's house when I unwrapped the iPod. Secretly, I really wanted a ring, but an iPod was perfectly fine. Apparently, however, I showed disappointment all over my face. He told me to open it up and show my parents how it worked. I wanted nothing to do with that. But, finally, he convinced me. Well, when I opened the box, there was no iPod inside. Instead, it was a ring box. He got down on one knee and proposed in front of my family. It was so special. And I reacted like a crazed monkey. See?

I'm very much a putonamovieandputonmysweatpants type girl. But at the same time? I'm also a sucker for all things romantic.

Tell us one thing you'd like to do with your significant other one day. If you could do anything? Go anywhere?
We'd really, really like to go to Europe. And travel hop. Italy, England, Ireland, France. We were thinking about doing it this year, but then realized that it's expensive and stressful. So instead? We went to Costa Rica and played with the monkeys.

11. Tell us what you plan on doing on this Valentine's Day.
We actually have a Valentine's Day tradition dating back to 2008. We were living in Jersey and there was a huge ice storm. We'd been stuck in the house all day and really wanted to go out and get dinner for Valentine's Day. Once we dug ourselves out and got on the main roads, we realized that nothing was open. Nothing except this one tiny Indian restaurant. Which was amazing. Every year since, we've gone out for Indian food. It's a tradition we look forward to every year!

12. Are you asking for anything this Valentine's day?
Nah. We save gift giving for Christmas and Birthdays. Just some Chicken Tikka Masala for me.

13. Give us one piece of advice of keeping a relationship strong and full of love.
Laugh. If you can't laugh together, then what's the point? We like to have fun and we don't take life too seriously.

Also, date night. At least once a week. It's important to make time for just the two of you.

Why? Yes, I did work out, don't worry. But today I'm linking up with Mrs. Monologues today for Fur Baby Friday. You know, to flaunt my puppies.

Why? Because you haven't seen a pic of my crazy pups on here for a while. Today, I'm only featuring Peanut. Wiggles has been 1. boring and 2. a huge pain in my butthole as of late. He's getting sassy and doing things like taking the throw pillows off the couch and running around the house with them (while simultaneously trying to rip the stuffing out of them.) Jerk.

Anyway, here's Peanut on Christmas day. My mom got us a nice sherpa throw, which was super cuddly and warm. Peanut clearly took a liking to it:

Awwww! That's kinda cute, right? I might have helped her burrow.

I've been doing it for years, mostly because that's what my mom did. When you grow up in a town with one or two restaurants for takeout (pick up only, no delivery for us) eating out wasn't ever really an option anyway. So knowing what was for dinner was crucial to my mom's sanity.

Many bloggers have tackled this topic. Recently, Sarah did a great post on it. Her and I tend to have the same philosophy. Although, mine only involves planning for 2, not 4.

If you're trying to lose weight and/or save money, planning your weekly (or biweekly) menu ahead of time is really the way to go. That way, you'll know what you're having, have the ingredients on hand and it will take the guess work out of "What's for dinner?" and also avoid a pizza/fast food/Chinese take out dinner (although, we totally have those nights now and then.)

I use my planner to jot down our meals, as well as put in ideas for meals for the future. And I also print out recipes from Pinterest so I have them on hand.

I realize this picture is upside down, but Blogger is being a bitch and not uploading the right orientation. Please, cock your heads.

Usually, I'll sit down during the week, ask hubs if there's any meals he desires, take a look at the sale papers, my coupons and plan the meals accordingly. My grocery list consists of what we need to make meals for that week, plus extras (stuff for lunch, snacking, etc.)

And, for the nerd in me, I also have a spreadsheet on Google docs of our favorite meals. Split into beef, chicken, fish, pasta, vegetarian. It's on Google docs so hubs can reference it as well. And honestly? It's nice to have them all in once place. Because sometimes, I make dishes that are a TOTAL fail. Those don't make it on the list. Only our go-to meals.

Once it's all planned out, I'll write it down on our fridge menu planner. Because hubs always needs to know what we're having for the week...and if he's cooking, what he'll be making.

And anything I need that I forgot during the week goes on our message board. This whole fridge system was a part of my resolution to become better organized in 2012.

I do my shopping on a weekly basis. I wish I could do it on a bi-weekly basis, but with the amount of fresh produce we eat, we typically run out by the end of the week and/or it goes bad.

We allow ourselves one night out. It's usually a Saturday, unless we're going out with friends during the week. So, I always plan for 6 meals.

If your grocery store is like mine and runs meat sales periodically, use this time to stock up. I always buy chicken breast when it's on sale. Then come home, separate it into half pound portions, wrap it in foil and label it. Thanks to my sister for turning me on to the foil method. I was using freezer bags, but was still getting some freezer burn. Using the foil really helps.

I also always have staples on hand. You'll always find in my kitchen:

Onions and garlic

Potatoes

Brown Rice

Chicken Stock

Diced Tomatoes

Tomato Sauce

Canned Beans

Hot Sauce (duh, Hubs is kind of obsessed)

Soy Sauce

Lemon Juice

Vinegar (balsamic, rice wine, red wine)

Olive Oil

Whole Wheat Pasta

Tonight? We're have ribs in the crockpot! Hope this was helpful!

It's been 2 whole years since I started my blogging journey. And within that two years, it's definitely been a haven for me. I place to write, get out my thoughts, set goals and connect with other wonderful women who are doing the very same with their slice of the Internet.

It's safe to say that now I read over 60 blogs every day. All serve a very different, unique purpose. Some give great recipes, fitness tips, running advice, finance information, craft ideas, or simple make me laugh out loud. But all bring something to the table that has helped my personally.

Of course, I would love to go through all 60 blogs and writewhy I love them so much, but that would take way too long. So I've picked a few of my faves to highlight and hope you'll stop by and give them a look.

I Love You More Than Carrots: I've been following this blog since the very beginning. AP is a fellow Maryland transplant, who's raising her adorable son, Carter and baking another little baby boy. Her sass and snark are a bright spot in my day. And hopefully, soon enough, we'll be able to utilize her photography services for a maternity photo shoot!

Team Studer: Tab and I went to college together. I've also been reading her blog since before I started my own. She's got the cutest, most active little son, Grayson and is also baking a second girl baby that's due very soon! She's got great advice for parents of youngsters, along with great stories about her puppies, family and life.

Mrs. Monologues: I started following her blog back when it was fluffy and way less smart-ass than it is now. She switched it up some time ago to allow her blog to be a true outlet for her writing and sassy attitude. Her sarcasm is a trait I can certainly appreciate, since that's the way I like my friends, family and passersby. The more sarcastic your humor, the better we get along.

Running in Pearls: When I got into running (or have at least attempted to), I tried to follow several blogs that broached this very topic. However, I wanted to follow women that I could relate to. Not the marathon runner that's been running since birth and was basically raised in a pair of sneakers. I found Sonja's blog and knew that she would serve as a source of inspiration not only in running, but in life.

First Name Smith: This girl is hysterical. Kristin is definitely not afraid to keep it real, something that I love. Afterall, blogging is about real life. She doesn't sugar coat the highs and lows of parenting her adorable son, Smith. And she likes a good glass (or box) of wine. A girl after my own heart.

Sunny Side Up: We all know that one of my resolutions this year is to get more organized. I've drawn so much inspiration from Erin and her amazing organizational skills. Her house, and life for that matter, are so together, it makes me want to be a better person.

There are SO many more blogs that I love, but I'll leave you with these for now. I definitely smell a Part Deux in the future.

Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup

Hubs and I had a very uneventful weekend, which was perfectly fine with me. I felt like I needed some time to get my house in order and attach my behind to the couch. I even finally finished the third book in the Hunger Games trilogy (which was definitely my least favorite of the three.) I'm taking a break from the Kindle to read Deep Down True, which is a paperback that I'd bought a little while ago. Not as epic as Hunger Games, but it'll do.

Yesterday, I roasted a chicken. You know, the kind that's already cleaned, seasoned and in the bag. Easy stuff. And now we have a ton of leftover chicken. Of course, I whipped up a batch of chicken salad for hubs. Just for him though. I think it's disgusting. Only because it's made with mayonnaise and that makes me want to vomit all over my keyboard. I'm also going to make a big 'ole batch of soup. This recipe for Creamy Chicken Noodle soup came out of my brain the last time we had some leftover chicken and it quickly become a favorite in our house.

Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup

1 tbsp. olive oil

1 onion, diced

2 stalks celery, diced

2 carrots, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 carton chicken broth

1 tsp thyme

1 bay leaf

1 cup chicken, shredded, cubed, whatever you fancy

1/2 cup fat free half and half

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

3/4 cup ditalini pasta (or any other small pasta shape)

Salt and pepper

Saute onion, celery, garlic, carrot in olive oil until tender. Add chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and add half and half, cheese, pasta and spiced. Simmer for 15 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste.

Ah, yes. My favorite day of the week.

This week was all about getting back into my fitness routine. Usually, I can muster the energy to get up to work out in the AM about 3 times. This week? Only once. But at least it was once.

Yoga has been a great addition to my workout routine. It doesn't burn many calories, but it I can certainly feel it the next day. And I know as I continue to do it, I'll become stronger and more flexible. Plus, every session comes with a <strike>naptime</strike> meditation at the end.

Saturday: Yoga
Sunday: Nothing
Monday: 40 minute incline walk, squats, lunges, push ups, crunches
Tuesday: Sick day, nothing
Wednesday: Yoga
Thursday: 50 minute run/walk, squats, lunges, push ups, crunchs, bicep curls, lateral raises
Friday: 30 minute incline walk, crunches

Source: fromfatty2fit.tumblr.com via Heather on Pinterest

Body Backfire

This week has been, well, how should I say it? Shit? Yes. Shit. For no reason in particular.

This past weekend we had a friend come in from Chicago for a visit. Which meant that I didn't stick to my routines that I love so much. Instead, I inserted pizza, candy and wine into my mouth. Workouts? Well, I did make it to yoga on Saturday morning, but that was the best I could muster. Needless to say, the weekend of indulgence left me feeling like a pile of Wiggle poop. And on top of that? My stomach decided to give me all kinds of fits. I'll spare you the details. And AM workouts this week? Didn't happen. Not.a.one. For shame.

I've desperately tried to get back into the swing of life this week. Getting my workouts in and for the love of all things green, get some vegetables back into my system. The closest thing I had to a veggie this weekend was the baked potato served to me with no utensils at Medieval Times. Which I promptly picked up and shoved in my face, barbarian style. Now, I'm not complaining. It was a fabulous time. But my body is paying me back. Especially with that extra pound I gained from eating like a garbage truck.

Exhibit A: Medieval Times (Hubs, Houseguest *Colin*, Christopher)

This week has been about getting some sleep, getting some exercise, getting some greens and hopefully, removing some lard. I was doing so well and this is a minor set back in progress. Guess it goes to show you that once you change your eating/exercising habits, straying away can make you feel even worse.

Clearly, I skipped Fitness Friday last week. I was too busy hanging out at the Inner Harbor guzzling some cocktails. I did get in 5 workouts last week regardless. Two of them were yoga, and although it's great for toning, it doesn't burn a ton of calories.

What's for dinner tonight? I'm going carb-less.

Easy Garlic Chicken

Source: food.com via Heather on Pinterest

And warm broccoli slaw with peanut dressing. A recipe that I'm making up myself. I'll let you know how that one goes down. We like to know what's coming next.

I've been known to be a person who doesn't like to go out on "school nights." I like to save my socializing for the weekends and Friday nights, when I can stay out late and not worry about being up and at 'em for work the next day.

A typical day in the life for me goes something like this:

5:00 AM - Alarm goes off...I hit snooze.
5:30 AM - Still hitting snooze
5:55 AM - Now I'm getting my butt out of bed to get changed to head downstairs and hit the treadmill (please note that the AM workouts don't make it into my daily routine, but usually about 3 times a week.)
6:00 AM - Let the dogs outside, prepare my lunch/breakfast for the day, let dogs in.
6:05 AM - Start up the treadmill while watching Army Wives
6:35 AM - Head back upstairs for teeth brushing, showering, changing, primping.
7:10 AM - Out the door for work.
7:30 - 7:40 AM - Arrive at work. Eat breakfast, drink coffee, check email.
4:00 PM - Out the door and headed home.
4:30 PM - Take out the dogs, change into workout clothes.
4:45 PM - Back on the treadmill for another 30 - 40 minutes. Then about 15-20 minutes of strength training.
5:30ish PM - Shower, start dinner
6:30ish PM - Dinner time.
7:00 PM - Chores, relaxing with hubs, TV
9:30 PM - Head to bed to brush teeth and read until I pass out.

Wow, I'm pretty boring, right? But hey, that's what works for me. Besides that, I plan our meals out a week in advance and usually hit the store on a Saturday or weeknight. I get seven kinds of stressed if I don't have our meals planned. We only eat out once a week (usually on Saturdays) because if we ate out more than that, we'd weigh more and have a lighter wallet. Nobody wants either of those things.

Tell me I'm not the only one that hates doing stuff on a "school night?"

Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal Muffins

Typically when it comes to baking, I'm a boxed mix kind of girl. I don't do well with precise measurements (perhaps it's the whole "I suck at math" thing.) We all know that in baking, you need to be pretty precise. Which is why my creations usually turn out lacking a little bit of something. Especially when I'm trying to make it healthier.

Last night, however, I threw caution to the wind (rebel!) and baked some muffins. From scratch. And guess what? They were pretty darn tasty! I adapted this recipe for Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal Muffins from Annie's Eats. Enjoy!

Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal Muffins

1 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup old fashioned oats

1 tsp. baking power

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp. vanilla

2 tbsp. applesauce (unsweetened)

3/4 cup light brown sugar

2 large eggs

1 cup mashed banana (this was 2 medium bananas for me)

6 tbsp. creamy reduced fat peanut butter

1 cup low-fat buttermilk

Preheat oven to 350. Line muffin tin with liners or spray with nonstick spray. In a medium bowl, combine flours, oats, baking soda, baking power and salt. Stir to combine. In another bowl, combine vanilla, applesauce, brown sugar, eggs, banana, peanut butter and buttermilk. Blend with a whisk. Combine the two ingredients until incorporated well. Spoon into muffin tin. Bake for 18-20 minutes. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes. You can top these with some additional peanut butter, but I left mine alone.

And you know the best way to mash a banana? With your hands. Clean hands, of course.

Perhaps it's my lack of anything really exciting going on in my life. We're boring people. And for the most part? That's ok with me.

What do I have for you today? Some random thoughts.

I just tried Chocolate Peppermint Luna bars for the first time ever. I can't believe it's taken me so long! If you haven't tried them, I suggest hitting up your nearest retailer (they were on sale at Target last week) and scooping them up. Delish. 180 calories. 12 grams of sugar. Not too shabby. I ate one for breakfast with some fruit.

Speaking of food, I made Skinny Taste's Chocolate Chip Scones last night. Also delicious and 199 calories. Although, if you're not used to the taste of wheat flour, it could be hard to get past. You could probably play with the ratio of wheat to white flour. But clearly hubs enjoyed them because he had 2.5. Speaking of Skinny Taste, I made her Stuffed Cabbage Casserole the other night as well. It was awesome! I highly recommend making this on a Sunday and having the leftovers all week.

Hubs' job is slowly driving me to drink. One day he says he's traveling. The next he's not. They need to make up their minds already so I can prepare myself mentally.

Speaking of drinking, I think I've found my new favorite cheap wine. I got myself a bottle of Gewurztraminer from Sutter Home (vintage 2007.) Very smooth white. If you know anything about me, you know I base my cheap (because I don't always drink on a budget) wine consumption on alcohol content. No 7.5% fruit juice for me. The biggest bang for your buck is 11% minimum. And this bottle? 13%. $5.99. Can't beat it. (I kind of sound like a drunk now, right? I swear I'm not.)

I'm in love with my Kindle Fire. I pretty much have it with me at all times when I'm home. I stalk Facebook, check my email, play Words with Friends (heatherjp12...play with me and you're guaranteed to win because I'm AWFUL,) Plants vs. Zombies. And, oh yeah, I read. Speaking of, I'm on the third book of the Hunger Games series. If you haven't picked it up yet, this series is a MUST read. Even hubs is on board. I'll be looking forward to the movie release in March!

I only have a four day week this week because we have a friend visiting from Chicago. Today is Tuesday, but it's really my Wednesday. Booyah!

I haven't been on Twitter in over a month. I should really get back to it, especially since I have my Kindle with me at all times...or my iPhone. I'm surrounded my technology.

By the way, did you know my husband has a blog? You should read it. I triple dog dare you not to laugh out loud. His sense of humor was a definite reason I married him. Only he knows how to make me laugh so hard I piss my pants. True.

Fitness Friday

Oh, hi! Yep, it's me. You know, the girl who hasn't blogged in a week. Life got the best of me. You know how it goes. But I'm looking forward to a productive weekend and perhaps some of that organizing I was talking about. I'd really like to take a big trip to Ikea...I just have to convince hubs to come with me.

This week's fitness regimen has been cardio-filled. I really wanted to get back on board with some strength training and I didn't end up doing that a whole lot. And as for hot yoga? We had to cancel. Julie's grandmother passed away suddenly :( And I wasn't going for the first time by myself. Weiny, much? Yep. We are signed up for regular yoga this week though.

Sunday: Nothing
Monday: 30 minute incline brisk walk
Tuesday: 60 minute run/walk (14 minutes running...working on building to 30)
Wednesday: 30 minutes incline brisk walk
Thursday: 30 minutes run/walk
Friday: 30 minutes incline brisk walk; 100 workout

Goal for next week? Incorporate the 100 workout at least 3 times and add a treadmill interval workout. My 30 minutes aren't going to cut it. I need to up the time too.

I'm also still using the Lose It app! I've made some adjustments. I was recording my exercise, but now I'm not. Because I was eating those extra calories that it gave me. I'd like to stay away from using them if possible so that I net 1250 calories a day (I'm on the 1427 per day plan, to lost 1.5 pounds a week....even though I haven't seen the scale budge much.) Plus, I found this photo on Pinterest the other day and I think it speaks volumes about weight vs. muscle.

Source: keepsweatingandgetfitandhealthy.tumblr.com via Shannon on Pinterest

Happy Friday!
And though it's been a short week, it's sure felt like a long one!

You might have noticed that I missed a Fitness Friday post last week. That's because I was doing way more important things like napping, catching up on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hill and reading The Hunger Games on my new Kindle. I did manage to get in two workouts, but for the most part, I was useless.

But with the Monday being a new year and a new week, it was time to get back on track. My two-a-day workouts suffered a little bit this week, but I'm hoping to get back to my normal routine next week.

Also, this Sunday I'll be trying Hot Yoga for the first time. Which should be interesting considering how I don't like to be hot. But my friend Jenny swears that it's awesome, so Julie and I signed ourselves up. We'll see how it goes.

I also started in with the 100 Workout that many of you have probably seen floating around Pinterest. My friend Jen suggested that I start doing that as well, and sub the leg lifts for push ups. And let me tell you, walking was a challenge after this baby. Here's what it looks like:

100 Workout

100 Jumping Jacks
90 Crunches

80 Squats

70 Push Ups

60 Jumping Jacks

50 Crunches

40 Squats

30 Push Ups

20 Jumping Jacks

10 Minute Run (which I usually do in the morning)

Looks innocent enough, right? Ha!

Sunday: Nothing
Monday: 40 minute run/walk
Tuesday: 30 minute run/walk, 100 workout
Wednesday: 40 minute run/walk
Thursday: 30 minute run/walk, 100 workout
Friday: 30 minute run/walk
Saturday: Nothing

Happy Weekend!

Pantry Organization

Like I said yesterday, one of my resolutions is to get my crap organized. There are a few areas in my house that are in a sorry state of chaos. Like...

My pantry.

THE HORROR! Seriously, that's embarrassing.

I decided this was going to be my first project. I needed to maximize my space, get rid of some expired items, and for the love of all things spicy, get hubs' hot sauce in order. He only has 12 bottles. Seriously. 12.

After a big 'ole trip to Walmart for some containers, I finally have somewhat of an organized pantry.

Better, right? I still have some more containers to get, and some labeling to do, but I'd say it's on its way. Happy day!

The New Year's Resolution. Many set them, few achieve them.

I have a track record of setting them. Not achieving all of them, but certainly striving for them. Goals are an important thing to have. It gives you something to work for; a way to make yourself a better person. So what if you don't always meet them? At least you're having some ambition, right?

What are some of my goals for this year? Let's see...

Lose weight. Duh. That's always on my list. It will always be on my list. And although I haven't lost as much as I've wanted to this past year, I certainly feel healthier. I'd like to keep that momentum going.

Have a baby. Phew! That's a big one, folks. This year, I turn 29. These eggs aren't getting any younger, am I right?

Run a 5K. I mean, run. Not run/walk. Run. I can do this one. I just have to set my mind to it.

By the same token, be able to run 30 minutes straight. The above and this one go hand-in-hand.

Organize my crap. Yes, we have this big house now. Meaning we have more places to shove crap. Leaving it an unorganized mess. Well, my friends, it's time for a change. I hate clutter. Clutter clouds my mind. So I'm working on the house room by room. Stay tuned. I have my first project in the works.

Take more time to create. Sure, I craft occasionally. Pinterest has certainly offered a source of inspiration. Now it's time to actually start completing more of the projects that I pin.

Get back in touch with my spiritual side. I really need to reinvent my relationship with God. I feel that I've lost it over the years and I really need to commit to rebuilding the spirituality I once had. That doesn't mean going to church every week (at least not for me,) but putting my trust in Him and turning to Him for support and guidance.

Stop swearing like a sailor. I've GOT to stop with my potty mouth ways. It's unbecoming. And I can't have my kids cursing as soon as they can talk. Now, let me be clear here. I'm not going to stop swearing all together. I'm just going to stop swearing like a sailor. Got it? Let's not have unrealistic expectations.

That's a pretty good list, don't you think? What are your resolutions?

Holiday Detox Soup

For the most part, hubs and I tried to stay away from too many treats this holiday season. However, over the few days we were visiting his parents and mine, we got a little overindulgent.

Come Wednesday, we were ready for a bit of a detox. We needed some vegetation, not in the form of a creamy casserole.

My mind immediately went to vegetable soup. Filling and full of veggies and fiber. This time, I decided to use barley. I've had soups with barley before, but had never made it myself. It offers the bite and heartiness of pasta, but without the refined carbs and too many calories.

So, my Vegetable Barley (aka, Holiday Detox Soup) was born. Just a note, there's literally no method to my madness (like why I used chicken and veggie stock...or soy sauce.) Go with it. Embrace it. And trust me, you'll like this soup.

Vegetable Barley (Holiday Detox Soup)

1 container chicken stock (Those big cardboard containers, not the cans. I'd look up the ounces, but I'm too lazy to go upstairs to the kitchen.)
1 container vegetable stock
1 onion, diced
3 celery ribs, diced
2 carrots, diced
1 zucchini, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 cups green cabbage, shredded
1 can of mushrooms
1 can petite diced tomatoes
3 tablespoons soy sauce
3/4 cup barley
1 tsp. dried thyme
1 1/2 tablespoons of olive oil
Salt
Pepper

Heat oil in a large stock pot. Add onion, celery and carrot. Cook until softened (about 7 minutes or so.) Add zucchini, cabbage and garlic, cook until softened (about 5 minutes.) Add the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil and simmer for an hour.

It cures what ails ya. Trust me, I got my degree from WebMD.

Christmas Hangover

I can't believe the holidays are over and we're headed into 2012. I said to hubs today that it feels like I was just putting up all the holiday decorations, and now I'm about to tear them all down.

Santa was VERY generous this year. Perhaps a little too generous. Wait until my dad sees my mother's credit card bill ;) She definitely spoiled my sister, myself and both of our husbands.

My favorite gifts this year were my Kindle Fire from hubs. I've pretty much been holding onto this thing nonstop since he gave it to me. I just finished my first book on it...The Hunger Games. If you haven't read this book yet, it's a must! Definitely one of the most captivating books I've read in a long time.

Momma got us a Keurig, which we've been wanting for quite some time. There's something to be said about brewing your coffee one cup at a time.

She also got us a sherpa throw that it so warm and soft, I've been practically carrying it around the house like Linus's blanket since we brought it home. However, right now, Peanut has claimed it's cuddliness and is curled up in a tight ball taking a nap.

I also got some great jewelry from Lia Sophia. My momma certainly knows my taste! And we both got lots of clothes and odds and ends.

And my dad? He outdid himself this year and got my mom, sister and I all matching necklaces made from diamonds from my grandmother's ring. Definitely a special gift.

The puppies? They got some bones. Plenty of snuggles and a Christmas bath. I'm sure they were grateful for everything but the latter. But at least they smell nice!

Now that we're back in town, we're pulling the house back together. I've reorganized my kitchen about 5 times to fit the Keurig in just the right place. And my laundry pile? Rivals a small mountain. But hey, at least I'm off until Tuesday. I can tackle all the choirs...or waste time on my Kindle :)

Fitness Friday

Merry Almost Christmas! I can't believe Christmas is here...it really snuck up on me this year.

We're gearing up to go to my parent's house for the weekend. And there's going to be plenty of food to be had. I've been trying hard to keep myself in check this season, and so far, I've done pretty well. I haven't completely denied myself holiday treats, but I've certainly limited them. If I had eaten all the cake, cookies and treats in my office right now, I'd weigh at least 50 pounds more.

Plus, I've been keeping up with my work outs. The treadmill has been awesome. I'm so glad we decided to get one. Except we're going to have to get some kind of heavy duty air freshener because our basement smells like a dirty sweat sock after hubs or I are done.

I've been trying to increase my running bit by bit. Hubs challenged me to start with 10 minutes straight running, then increase a minute every other run. Today, I'm up to 12 minutes. I'm working towards 30.

I also got some great workouts from my friend Jen who used to be a personal trainer. They look intimidating, to say the least, but she says they'll torch calories. So I plan to add those into the mix starting in January.

I haven't done too well getting up in the morning this week. Sleep seems to win out. But I did manage a few days. It makes it easier to get 60 minutes in when I can split it into 2, 30 minute sessions.

This week:

Sunday: Nothing
Monday: 60 minute run/walk
Tuesday: 60 minute run/walk
Wednesday: 45 minute run/walk
Thursday: 45 minute run/walk
Friday: Nothing
Saturday: I might get up and use my parent's elliptical. It's all up in the air.

Have a very, very Merry Christmas!

I'm Not Bad Driver, I Just Hit Stuff

Monday morning started out like any other. I was thrown into the chaos of the Beltway at 7AM that was a mess of stop and go traffic. I was cruising along just fine when the lady in front of me slammed on her brakes, causing me to slam on mine. But guess what? I didn't get stopped quite in time causing me to catch her right in the bumper.

I got out of my car dreading what I was about to see. Lucky for me, and the lady in front of me, damage was minimal. A tiny scratch on my front bumper, that's really only noticeable to me. And her car? I took some of the paint off around the license plate. No dents. No serious damage. She took my info, but I haven't heard from my insurance company yet. I'm hoping she decided it wasn't worth it to file a claim.

But my biggest fear was telling hubs. Because I've had a track record with hitting things. Mostly inanimate objects.

1. Age 16, the same week I got my license, I backed into a fellow team mate's car leaving field hockey practice. My dad was none too pleased with my performance.
2. Age 18, I backed into a Lincoln Town Car in the parking lot of the Bon Ton. Luckily not enough to damage either car.
3. Age 24, I hit a the ticket booth at a parking garage. With the ticket lady still in it. Yep, she was a little shocked. No one was injured. My car had a scratch on the bumper, no dents. The only thing bruised was my ego.
4. Age 25, I pulled out in front of a Jaguar on the way to my sister's college graduation. To my defense, he was booking it down the road and I didn't realize how fast he was coming. That was my biggest accident. My front bumper came right off in the middle of the road. Again, no one was hurt, thank goodness.
5. Age 27, I took a turn too wide in the Giant parking lot and sideswiped a huge truck. Injuring the bumper on my 2 month old car, but again, no damage to the other car.

Now this one. You can imagine why I'd be a little reluctant to tell hubs. I've got a bit of a track record.

I crafted an email to him describing the incident, confirming the fact that it was no big deal. One of those things you can't prevent. I sent it and hoped for the best. He emailed me back:

Hubs: Nice work, Ricky Bobby.
Me: That implies that I was speeding, which I was not.
Hubs: Heather Accidents: 3 (<---Clearly he wasn't counting correctly)
          Me Accidents: 0
Me: This was not an accident, it was an "incident."
Hubs: Semantics.
Me: The Beltway is a dangerous place.
Hubs: With drivers like you, it sure is.

Touche.

Fitness Friday

Phew! Here we are. Friday again. My favorite day of the week!

You all know that I've been a tad down on myself this week. Hence the sad face posts. However, once again, my incredible family and friends have come to my rescue to help me get my shit into perspective. A very special thank you to my dear friend Katie, who not only showed me immense support, but also brought just the right amount of sarcasm. She never disappoints. And to my momma and sister? You're amazing. I love you both. Thanks for keeping me sane.

This week's fitness has, once again, focused mostly on cardio. The treadmill and are have become real good friends. I've decided, after much deliberation, that I'll be focusing mainly on cardio from now on. My goal is to shed fat, not gain immense amounts of muscle. Which is exactly what I've been doing. And that's great, and eventually that's what I'll want, but first I need to get rid of the flubber.

Also, although I've not lost weight persay, I've lost some inches. Which is fabulous. Some on my thighs and about 3/4 inch on my waist (which is what I really need to lose!) So that's good motivation.

Here's my week:

Sunday: Nada. Recovering from the party.
Monday: Treadmill - 40 minutes run/walk
Tuesday: Kickboxing and Treadmill 30 minutes run/walk
Wednesday: Treadmill - 40 minute run/walk (13 minutes straight run)
Thursday: Nothing.
Friday: AM Treadmill - 20 minutes run/walk (10 minutes straight run), PM Treadmill planned - 30 minutes incline walk
Saturday: Treadmill - 40 minute run/walk

Source: soon2befit.tumblr.com via Heather on Pinterest

Now? I'm going to enjoy my weekend before the holidays. Perhaps go to a comedy club with hubs and friends and have a good belly laugh. Happy weekend to you all!

Currently...

Today, I'm linking up with Jen over at Perfectly Imperfect for:
I like to have control in all aspects of my life and it gives me some serious anxiety when I don't.

I, like I'm sure many of you, had a life plan for myself. And for a long time, I was right on track. Married by my mid-20's, had a job in my field, owned a house, owned a dog (plus 1), etc.

However, I've been recently struggling with said life plan. Because by now? I wanted to be in a managerial position at my job, have a baby and lose the weight I set out to lose so long ago. And guess what? None of the above have been accomplished.

My weight? Ugh. It's a struggle. I'm not sitting on the couch eating cake. If I was, then I would deserve every ounce of chub I have. Instead, I engage in an active lifestyle (workout 5 times a week), count calories and overall try to make healthy decisions. But my weight? Doesn't reflect that. Hubs is telling me to work harder. I should be working out longer, harder, faster. And perhaps he's right. Clearly whatever I'm doing now isn't helping me lose the pounds.

My career? I'm just not where I want to be. I should be a manager. I should be making more money. I'm doing none of the above, and I only have myself to blame.

A baby? Well, that's also directly related to my weight. I wanted to lose weight before putting a baby inside my belly. Because I didn't want to have to lose the baby weight on top of the extra weight I already had to lose. Plus, I know my time will be constricted once I have said child. Hubs and I haven't been "preventing" pregnancy, but we also haven't been "trying" too hard either. I guess when the time comes, it will come.

It's all been weighing pretty heavily on me lately. And in turn, making me anxious and depressed. I guess I just need to accept that everything doesn't always happen as you've planned.

The No Show-ers

This weekend we had ourselves a holiday gathering. This brings me to a rant, that I've definitely had before on this blog. The RSVP.

For this gathering, people actually RSVPed. And early. We had a head count of 18 people. Checked in with everyone a few days before, to confirm, then went out to shop for food and beverages. And if you've ever thrown a party, you know it's not cheap. From beer, wine, food, etc, it adds up pretty quickly and before you know it, you're spending triple digits. And taking time to make delicious cake pops complete with festive decor, like so:

Saturday comes. 8:30PM rolls around, and approximately 4 people (the old faithfuls :)) are still the only ones nomming on my food and drinking le Miller Lite (and some delightful mulled, spiked cider.) We had a drop in of 2 others, but with a baby, we knew they couldn't stay long.

We got a text from one other couple saying they couldn't make it. And the rest? Just didn't show. That Saturday I spent busting my ass in the kitchen, cleaning my house, making room for nearly 20 people? Kind of a waste of time. Although, our friends that did come had a lovely time and certainly enjoyed my food and drink, I was disappointed and mad that everyone else decided at the last minute not to show. We're all adults here, you know? The days of college parties with a case of Natty Light and a few bags of chips are out the door. We're a little classier in our shindigs.

Hubs was pissed. I was steamy. Sunday, I submitted myself to the couch for a day of Food Network, puppy snuggles and iPhone games. After all, I busted my ass on Saturday.

The lesson? If you're ever thinking about not showing up to a party that you RSVPed "Yes, Plus 1" to...think about me.
