Talking to Children about Spirituality

We claim to be a ‘religious’ nation with 92% of Americans saying they believed in God in 2008 (source). However with only 25% of us attending religious services, there is a large number of us who fall somewhere between atheism and committed religious following which can be a no-man’s land for straight answers concerning children’s questions about God.

Talking to children about any big subject brings a sea of weird and wonderful approaches, not all of which manage to sufficiently answer their questions. With the “stork drops the baby into the cabbage patch” analogy being a popular answer to one of these big questions, it is no-wonder that our teenagers end up either very confused or very untrusting of our guidance.

It is impossible to remember how children think, to once again know what it is like to think so innocently and curiously and wonderfully about a magnitude of subjects. My three year old niece asked her Mom recently if her baby brother had a bath and a blanket when he was inside her tummy. This reminded me once again of just how precious their little minds are and how we get so preoccupied with other things when we become adults and forget how innocently our children look at and think about the world around them.

The question of God and religion is a big subject for adults and one which brings argument all over the world, therefore it is going to call on you to work out how you think you can appropriately and honestly respond when questioned.

God takes many shapes and forms for different people and how to explain this complicated phenomenon of God to children can be a very tricky area for parents as they negotiate understanding and explaining the presence and place for religion and science to co-exist in our world. Parents’ own spiritual beliefs are challenged as children demand answers that are logical and make sense, and often we are forced to define our own beliefs in order to be able to provide sound answers.

Perhaps science has progressed our thinking beyond creationism, but if so then where does that leave us when explaining the presence of a God? Some reflection on our own relationship with God may help to bring some clarity to the predicament.

Despite our modern scientific understanding of the world and where we come from, we still hold strongly to the notion of a God and get great reassurance from ‘his’ presence. We often renew our friendship with God during times of crisis when we are vulnerable and afraid and desperate for guidance from someone or something or anything that may be able to give us some hope to hold onto. Sometimes just the thought of having ‘someone’ to talk to during times of loneliness when we feel judged and misunderstood by those around us is gives us great reassurance.

Another common influence on our need to hold on to the notion of a God is that born from fear of the repercussions of our actions, which may be delivered either during this life or after death. Is it possible that someone or something holds the power to influence these situations in a positive or negative way? If so, is your faith guided by fear of the consequences of your own actions.

Do we see God as our creator in a metaphorical sense, our moral compass or our spiritual guidance. Perhaps God is nature, the forces that are responsible for growth and wholeness in the wonderfully complex world that we live in. As Einstein said ‘I would use the term God as the embodiment of the laws of physics’ (source here).

Even for ‘non-believers’, can God be put in the same category as Santa and the Tooth Fairy and used to bring excitement and wonder into their children’s worlds, knowing that one day they will grow old enough to be told a different story?

Everyone will have a different answer to these questions and therefor a different approach to answering their children’s questions. I don’t know how best to answer this question, and I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer. All I can offer is to keep in mind that you are feeding young, innocent, curious, wondrous minds. You want you children to question the world around them and be encouraged to keep asking the questions that fill their precious minds. You want them to be open minded and respectful of all the wondrous explanations that exist in our world for the big questions such as ‘who is God’? It is our responsibility as parents to foster and encourage our children to question and think and remain open minded. It is a wonderful world we live in, and one that still needs to find answers to many big questions so the more we can prepare the next generation to want to seek those answers the better our world will be for it.

To finish I would like to add one of my favourite quotes from the wonderful poet Mary Botham Howitt who said “God sent children for another purpose than merely to keep up the race–to enlarge our hearts; and to make us unselfish and full of kindly sympathies and affections; to give our souls higher aims; to call out all our faculties to extend enterprise and exertion; and to bring round our fireside bright faces, happy smiles, and loving, tender hearts.” (source)

What I Thought:
I have a pair of black kitten heel slingback shoes that I had banished to the storage bin because I hated having to pull my hem out of my “heel wedgie.” This got to be embarrassing (not to mention a trip hazard) since I only wore these shoes at the office. Imagine trying to look like a polished professional woman in front of an important client and having to straighten out your hem with almost every step.

This first thing that I noticed about Slingbackers was just how small and unobtrusive they looked. This was great, I mean you don’t want it to be so noticeable that whoever is walking behind you staring trying to figure out what you have on your shoes. I received the black pair (great because my shoes are black) but they also come in clear (which would even be less noticeable).

They other thing that really stood out about Slingbackers was just how easy it is to “install” them on your shoes.

stretch loop B to hook around the heel
with shoe on, adjust by sliding the sides of loop B (forming a V). Make sure the loop C is positioned between your heel and the base of the shoe.

I was a little disappointed that I could not use them on my wedge style slingback shoes, but they are a definite must have for those slingbacks with a traditional heel.
