A Dance between Past and Present: A Review of “Shadow Dance” by Martin Ott.

Martin Ott’s “Shadow Dance” is a distinctive blend of noir and war fiction. Set in the shadows of Los Angeles’s criminal underworld, the story combines an intriguing premise with an eclectic cast of characters. The protagonist, West, is a young man, fresh out of a few military tours in Afghanistan, where he served as a POW prison guard. Seeking solace and a new identity, he goes AWOL, plunging into the darkness of LA’s underworld in a quest for re-connection and self-discovery.

What struck me most about “Shadow Dance” was Ott’s bold exploration of a veteran’s journey to understand his past and shape his future. Drawing on his personal experiences in the military, Ott provides a unique perspective on the start contrast and jarring transitions soldiers face upon their return from combat zones. He mirrors this journey in the transformation of Los Angeles, from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to its seedy underbelly, where our protagonist finds himself embroiled in the precarious dynamics of a crime family.

While Ott’s writing style might not suite everyone, especially those who prefer a “show, don’t tell” approach, it gives the narrative a distinctive tone. A Blood-Soaked Masterpiece – Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff.

Empire of the vampire is like a potion brewed with some of our favorite ingredients The Witcher, meets Game of Thrones, meets Interview with a Vampire, whilst staying true to our classic portrayal of the vampires we got to know in Dracula. My cheeky comparisons are outlined as follows:

The world starts off with the sun being a fading memory and vampire reign being supreme over humanity. It’s a haunting post – apocalyptic landscape where ancient ruins loom, monstrous creatures lurk, and survival is key. To be bloody clear - the world building in this book is masterful.

At the heart of our story is Gabriel de León, the last surviving silver saint, a holy order dedicated to combat vampires. Gabriel is a complex character, haunted by a grueling past, driven by his quest for love, redemption, and sacrifice. Although the narrative style is like Interview with a vampire, Jay weaves his tale between a younger, still hopeful Gabriel and his older, world worn self, revealing pivotal moments that have shaped both him and the world around him.

The thrilling and well-choreographed action sequences rival battle fueled battles that are true to what we have gotten to love in The Witcher. Combat scenes are brutal and visceral, and, if you are a reader like me, truly cinematic. The vivid portrayal of desperation and survival showcases Gabriel’s skill, cunning-ness, and relentless spirit.

The intricate political machinations and betrayals, the complex relationships among the character evoke the intrigue we got to enjoy in Game of Thrones. The power dynamics between the vampires and humans and in the vampire hierarchy itself unfolds in the most compelling and terrifying manner. Jay’s ability to infuse each character, no matter how minor, with depth and complexity ensures that we are invested in everyone’s fate.

His prose is rich and evocative and captures the essence of the story with all its twists and turns. Themes of faith, morality, the nature of humanity, Gabriel’s deep love, all are intricately explored, leaving us questioning his survival. In a nutshell, EOTV is not just merely a tale of vampires and humans. It’s a testament of the unconquerable spirit of humanity in the face of overwhelming darkness. It’s an epic fantasy that weaves together elements of gothic horror and high fantasy, all creating a chilling, thrilling yet deeply emotional journey. Combined with the added illustration of Bon Orthwick, (which I might add is not available in South Africa, because I’ve gone from one book shop to another, and can’t find it) the book paints a magnificent cinematic picture in every reader’s mind.

One will hope that this mesmerizing masterpiece will be adapted into a grand cinematic experience, befitting the tale it tells. (Because yes universe, this is what we want. Something great, for the love of everything holy, let go of those remakes!)

Oh, and Jay if you are reading this, pls can you organize some graphic versions of the Nevernight series as well, because again, I can’t find all three books in any place, in our shops either.

And I must have them.

TRUTH TO POWER - My Three Years Inside Eskom by ANDRÉ DE RUYTER

When André de Ruyter took over as Eskom CEO in January 2020, he quickly realised why it was considered the toughest job in South Africa.

Aside from neglected equipment, aging power stations, and an eroded skills base, he discovered that Eskom was crippled by corruption on a staggering scale. Book Review - Spare by Prince Harry - Audio-Book

"Spare" is a memoir written by Prince Harry that covers his life experiences up to the present day. The book includes stories about his childhood and growing up in the public eye as a member of the royal family, his military service in Afghanistan, his marriage to Meghan Markle, and his decision to step back from his royal duties and move to the United States.

The book has been praised for its candid and personal tone, with many readers finding it refreshing to hear Prince Harry's own voice and perspective on his life experiences. However, it has also been controversial in some quarters, with some critics accusing Prince Harry of being too self-centered or of unfairly criticizing his family members.

My experience was via Audio book, something I really enjoyed since it was in his own voice. Considering, the disputes in reviews where they stated that Harry was acting somewhat like a spoiled brat who was basically jumping up and down acting as if he was bullied.

Hearing him reading his tale however made it sound more like fond memories.

It’s a memoir so there are a couple of clearly defined themes that has shaped his life, which I’ll discuss in a bit but to me the book is indicative of someone who has finally been able to let go of all the expectations and constraints, someone who is now able to figure out who he is, what he wants to stand for and what he wants to live for.

The overall theme of the book screams mental wellness with its core focus on personal growth and positivity.

It reflects on:

The topic of his mother, how his mother's death affected him both personally and professionally. About the pain he felt as a young boy when his mother died, and how he struggled to come to terms with her loss. He describes the media scrutiny that he and his brother, Prince William, faced in the aftermath of their mother's death, and how that affected them mentally. He explains how he has coped with the trauma of his mother's death over the years, and how he has sought therapy and other forms of support to help him deal with his emotions. He also reflects on how his experiences have led him to become a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and support.

He doesn’t shy away from the fact that his relationship with his father is a nuanced one. While there have clearly been challenges and difficulties in their relationship over the years, there is also a sense of mutual respect and affection between them. He explains how he has come to understand and appreciate his father's perspective and values as he has grown older, and how he hopes to pass on those values to his own children.

He confirms that his relationship with Camilla has not always been easy considering how he and his brother, Prince William, felt protective of their mother's memory, and how they struggled to come to terms with their father's relationship with Camilla after their parents' divorce. However, as he has grown older, he acknowledges that he has come to see Camilla as a positive presence in his father's life, and he acknowledges the role that she has played in supporting him through difficult times. Overall, his portrayal of her is one of respect and understanding.

On the relationships with his brother, he affirms that whilst their relationship has had its ups and downs over the years, overall, he has a lot of love and respect for his brother, and the important role that he has played in his life. He reminisces about how close he and Prince William were as children, and how their shared experiences growing up in the public eye have created a unique bond between them. He values his brother's counsel and support, particularly during difficult times in his life.

He doesn’t shy away from the fact that his relationship with Prince William has been strained at times, particularly after he and his wife, decided to step back from their royal duties. He acknowledges how their differing priorities and perspectives led to tensions between them, and how the media scrutiny of their relationship added an extra layer of difficulty. Irrespective, he remains committed to maintaining a positive relationship with his brother and hopes to continue to work with him on charitable causes and other shared interests.

The most significant theme in the book, for me, is the constant influence of the media. Throughout the book, he talks about the impact the media has had on his life, and how it has contributed to some of his most difficult experiences. He takes us through the media's treatment after the death of his mother and explains how the media attention following her death was overwhelming and traumatic. He talks about the intense media scrutiny that he and his wife, have faced since they began dating, and how this scrutiny contributed to their decision to step back from their roles as senior members of the royal family. He describes the media coverage of their relationship as invasive and unfair and writes about the toll that it took on their mental health and well-being.

In a nutshell, the media is portrayed as a powerful and often destructive force in his life. He acknowledges the importance of the media in informing the public and holding those in power accountable, but also urges them to focus on the need for greater empathy and compassion in media coverage, particularly when it comes to covering the personal lives of public figures.

The message is a hopeful one, in which he reflects on the lessons he has learned and the ways in which he has grown throughout his life. He tells us about the importance of taking ownership of one's own story, and of learning from both the successes and the failures in life. Book Review – The Choice by Nora Roberts – Book 3 of the Dragon Heart Legacy

The wait on this final release was maybe too long, and I think because I didn’t read all three novels back-to-back, I didn’t feel as jarred after its completion. I hate it when releases are so far apart and would much rather deal with the sleep deprivation that follows a binding trilogy. I might just re read them back-to-back in the near future.

Irrespective of my personal annoyances, Nora Roberts managed to complete the series in a way only she can. She has this sort of poetic way of bringing her characters to life and luring you through mystical worlds. She has the best spell casting wordology and could literally be a poet in her own right. The way she manoeuvres us between real-and-fantasy scenes is seriously something many writers can make a study of.

Her characters are extremely well rounded, and always have a purpose. She has exquisite timing when it comes to building towards her fight scenes and has a good hand at pinning down the battles.

What I was a little bit annoyed about was Breen relationship. It was a bit unfulfilling, and I didn’t really feel much for Talamh. I acknowledged his position of power and understood what drove him but I didn’t always feel as if he was absolutely connected to Breen. Which was odd, because with Nora you are usually guaranteed to fall head-over-heals for most couples involved in said plot.

Having said that, I really did enjoy Talamh’ s ignorance towards things we see as worldly. The part where he tries to understand the point of a pinkie swear and wants in on it, because he feels it to be a pledge was eye-roll funny.

The other bit that frustrated me was the fact that the main character was once again busy writing a book and getting published. Whilst it’s really a fun character trait, I feel as if, every bloody main character must be writing a book and is trying to get published. This isn’t specific to her books, it’s just something I have picked up over the past two years with many books and even some series. The whole aspect of her writing a book, procrastinating over its content, deliberating sharing it with other just really felt unnecessary. I mean for me she could have tried to become a painter, and it wouldn’t have contributed or detracted from her character in anyway. (I have nothing against the pain of the writing process, trust me, I’m fully aware of the struggles, the self-doubt, the pain of dealing with negative comments, the sleepless nights, the editing frustration. I get it.)

In conclusion, The Choice is true to its title, with everyone involved facing their individual decisions. It’s a fulfilling fantasy read that goes full circle and gives its ready that feel good, happy ending we sometimes deserve.

BookReview - The Crave Series - Tracy Wolff

LOL, I can’t stop laughing about this one. I read reviews on Crave, and my-oh-my, it’s definitely got some polar opinions. I gave this one four stars, because I was sitting at a three due to various irritations but the fourth star had to go to the publisher and writer that actually had the balls to show the world f-u, we are going to print.

From a personal point of view, I found it un-put-downable. An adventure even though criticized highly for it’s similarities of you know what, where and when. ( snicker)

This was the first book in the series which means that the writer spent a lot of time on getting you acquainted to their world. She managed to do this in a great way, in fact I sometimes felt it too detailed but understand the premise. I enjoyed the fact that Grace came across as witty and strong in her own, even though the events that take place do cast her in a very Mary Soo type way. It is however what kept us reading because we all wanted to understand why marvelous creatures would want to get rid of a mere mortal. The book is written from her pov, but there are some chapters from Jaxon’s pov in the end , which I enjoyed. It actually gave me more insight into what was really happening since you don’t see all that from her side. You see Jaxon acting like an idiot but you never really understand why until you read those titbits.

I loved the fact that we have different types of fictional characters here in the way of dragons and gargoyles, vampires and werewolves, warlocks and witches. Its great entertainment and I honestly feel, if ever adapted to screen, in the right way, would be profitable and enjoyable.

I enjoyed the sarcasm that ran between everyone. I mean life is hard enough why not color it up with sarcasm.

Grace lost her parents and has no family left but her uncle and cousin, who lives in Alaska. Her uncle being the principle of a private school for gods and monsters. She joins the school, having nowhere else to go and is still very much struggling with her loss. Apart from her cousin, no one is really trying to get to know her, but Jaxon, who isn’t making her feel welcome but does try in his odd way to warn her off just about everyone and everything.

There are some attempts at her life, which she keeps trying to put off as accidental, but considering the amount of incidents happening in the short space of time, ( I mean she barely gets to class in the first 3 weeks of school) does start raising much question.

Then there’s the whole, I want you but shouldn’t have you situation that everyone is blowing steam off on.

Okay look, the romantic plot outline is somewhat Twilightish but it does has great diversity in its own right. The things that annoyed me aren’t necessarily similar to those who wrote italic reviews shouting; “plagiarism in its best form” because seriously I can see the association but let’s face it, its not the same, same.

The only big comparison is the fact that the two main characters shared a unfathomable attraction to each other, and yes the fact that they actually connect using quotes from Twilight. There are other small instances that was similar too but I’m hardly going to go into spelling them out here because they are insignificant. In fact, I was more annoyed with the similarities of 50 Shades to Twilight than I was with this one.

Honestly, if we really wanted to get into the entire debate around it, we can even fight about the comparison of Twilight to Romeo and Juliet. The bottom line is who cares. If you enjoy stories like Romeo and Juliet, you will undoubtedly enjoy loose interpretations made into modern day plots, if you have an issue with that you obviously don’t understand that majority of the stories in the world has already been told, what we read today are variations of the past. I mean even Sons of Anarchy was loosely based on Hamlet. So come on, lets give Tracy a break.

The stuff that annoyed me was:

The word Boy – Can we move away from referring to Jaxon as Boy – I mean honestly I understand this is a teen read but ffs, boy this boy that. NOOOOO. You can’t use abbreviations like af, ffs, swear the crap out of things and then refer to characters as boy. Just say guy or use his name but boy … he has lived for over a 100 years what is this referral to boy then?

The word Mate – Referring to Grace as the mate, come on people. Even Thirteen year old’s don’t have to constantly be reminded who the mate is, what the mate is etc just say Grace, we all understood the connection from the moment they met.

The Obvious – Then lastly, if you want to draw up something this similar to Twilight, which is bloody ballsy, then please for goodness sake don’t refer to Twilight in the book. That alone is something that I am sure has contributed to a lot of the animosity around this series. Yes there are referrals to other things as well, but you don’t have to make it – in your face – obvious.

Either way, the fact that she saved Jaxon, swallowed Hudson and turned to stone is enough to keep me intrigued enough to read on.

The thing with Nora Roberts books, is that one can never put them in a box. One can hardly classify any of them as an outright Thriller, Suspense, Romance or Thriller, because she has this amazing ability to cover a vast number of categories in one take.

Nightwork is a standalone novel written from a male point of view. It’s a novel, where readers will absolutely fall in love with a villain, because lets face it, even though he is an above average intellectual, and a master cook he does dabble in thievery. A thief that manages to turn his trade into something honorable, appreciative and artsy.

It’s not a short story, even though I found it a fast read. It’s pretty much a life journey that reflects on why he started his trade, when he started it and what made him what he became. Will is a deeply loyal person, who loves the family he has. He establishes deep connections with a small group of people and sacrifices a lot in his journey in order to protect the people he loves.

The book holds amazing suspense throughout the jobs he takes, which crosses many continents as he tries to out maneuver the situations that hold him captive. It’s a visual story that made me reflect a lot on something like Mission Impossible, James Bond scenario’s. It has colorful characters, honors different dialects and has its some pretty funny moments.

I gave this suspenseful romantic drama a five start on good reads.

Emotional Roller Coaster for sure. I am new to Colleen Hoover reads. It’s my second one and I feel like I should be taking a little bit of a mental break after this one.

Reminders of Him had me crying through two chapters. It was an un-put-downable read that had me reeling for majority of the characters in more ways than one. Colleen definitely has the gift to make you see different character perspectives and you end up feeling for each and every one.

The plot, as sad and depressing as it was has a satisfying end that at least doesn’t make you yearn for more. (Don’t you just hate it when something ends and you feel like there are so many ways it could have continued, or in some instances that this couldn’t or shouldn’t be the end.)

Reminders of him is a dramatic read that takes you on the journey of Kenna. Kenna was at the start of her life, she was in love and had a promising future with her boyfriend – Scotty, when tragedy struck, one night in seconds. Seconds that changed her entire future. The story takes us through her struggles once she is released from jail and works towards seeing the child, she didn’t know she was going to have when she was incarcerated.

It’s a story of endurance, acceptance, love and promise. It’s a tale that reflects on how intertwined life can be, how fate puts you in paths you could never have envisioned when you planned your way forward.

I gave this book a solid five on Goodreads, not only because it made me cry but because it delivers the message of hope.

It’s a message for everyone out there that’s struggling with things, that no one knows about. It’s a message for everyone that’s living their best life to always look back and remain humble towards others out there, because you never know what put them there in the first place.

Ledger is most probably one of the best male leads I’ve read in a while, and her daughter Diem is a very relatable four year old for anyone that has a daughter. Her name however, no. Not sure why but you see past it, because the plot is just that good.

Verity is a psychological thriller that revolves around a famous writer called Verity Crawford. Verity herself being the antagonist throughout the storyline, definitely doesn’t fall short of creepy behavior and open ended conclusions.

The book is a fast read that starts of with a Meet Joe Black scenario that evolves into a thrilling tell tale of a struggling author – Lowen, being brought in to finish Verity Crawfords book series for an astronomical amount of funding.

This is my first Colleen Hoover read, which I decided to dive into, after much hype from everyone on my Facebook groups. I usually don’t do fan favorites but considering I’m waiting for final releases from some of my favorite authors, and suffering from a tad bit of insomnia on occasion, I decided to take the plunge.

It didn’t disappoint me like The Silent Patient or I have something to tell you, which fell flat towards the end, instead it kept me going and I definitely couldn’t predict the outcome.

Do I agree with choices made in the book, definitely not. The way things played out towards the end actually made me withdraw from the characters themselves. It’s a conflicting end that makes you question Verity’s actual play and Lowen and Jeremy’s future considering the darkness that joined them and the truth that neither has admitted to one another.

I gave this book Five stars because it definitely does a number on your psyche.

Book Review – Purple Hearts by Tess Wakefield

It’s very seldom that I enjoy a movie, then realize it’s actually based on a book and end up enjoying the book equally. for me it usually end with a either or situation, with the book usually raining supreme. Although there are obvious deviations I wasn’t left annoyed as I was in the instance of Mortal Instruments or Hunger games for example.

Purple Hearts is unquestionably a romantic novel for readers that not only enjoy music but is into coming of age type characters. The characters itself are likable and relatable but don’t carry the overzealous infatuations we sometimes get in out right romance novels. It’s a unlikely romance that builds over a period of time and makes the characters realize who they really are and what they really want from life.

The only down side for me was that they where taking a crack at Creed, which is a big no no because in this house Creed is definitely a big yes.

The movie and books have been pretty hyped from people saying its great to people screaming racism, misogyny, and military propoganda. Whilst I guess you could compare to those matters, I think the reality is that many couples in the military could relate, many families have had similar instances where they had limited options to look at when it comes to medical cover, getting out of trouble, getting a stable income, so I’m not going to join the band wagon when it comes to throwing stones in that regard.

The film itself was more romanticized than the book whereas the book lacked the intenseness shown by the actors.

Either way it was a fun read and a good show. I gave it four stars on Goodreads.

The poems contained in this collection are warm and sincere and filled with soothing hope. In her dedication, the author refers to her poetry as a ‘small beacon of light’ for ‘anyone suffering from the physical weight of depression’. The words seem to float up through a limpid pool.

I have lost touch with the world / Alive but not present / It pains I feel so worthless / Just alive but truly not living … I yearn for the stillness and peace of the ocean / Seals gliding free and joyful above the waters … I dream of brighter days / Of joy and greater days / This season will pass away / Trusting God to pave my way.

At the beginning and at the end of the book, there’s a telephone number for the ‘Depression Hotline’.

Amanda Skosana is an internal auditor by profession, but when she follows her heart it is poetry that she writes. She was an only child, but her parents separated when she was still very young and she grew up with her grandmother. Indeed, a deep bond developed between them, one which has lasted to this day. She now looks after her beloved grandmother in her old age. When Amanda was in her early twenties, she nearly lost her ‘rock’ (a term of endearment she still uses for her grandmother). Dream State is a different kind of Thriller that plays off on an Island – Beleze, experienced by three characters Heidi, Russel, and Marley.

Oddly enough, I kept thinking about Sandman which obviously also revolves
around dreams and the lack of it. I didn’t finish the series (and I know people
are going to castrate me for this –but — I just didn’t enjoy it)

Having said that, lack of sleep is absolutely something relatable and the madness that derives from its absence is a reality I think many can relate to. Martin nailed the mind sets created from sleep deprivation one hundred percent along with the psychological effects on people.

The book is a fast-paced attention read, in the sense that you really need to keep track of the characters, their past, their present and their existing surroundings. Whilst I really enjoyed the different read, – because it’s not something I would usually deviate to – I did feel that the regular play back on the characters pasts drew away from the story and its progress. Yes, it did give us insight into what makes them tick, but the take back, was consuming in some instances. I also struggled to really connect with any of the main characters, although strong leads there was something amiss. I settled that debate by convincing myself that logically they are lacking something — sleep.

So, if that was the intent, its applaudable.

The setting revolves around the moon being hit by an asteroid and the impact it has on everyone on the island and then of course the bigger impact on the world.

It focuses on the ways people deal with the lack of sleep, how they interpret different people’s actions, how their pasts haunt their present existence and how they cope with impulsive irregularities in their existing environment. As if that isn’t enough, people also need to deal with groups trying to take over the island and pirates roaming the surrounding sea.

The thriller takes on a kind of post apocalyptical sci-fi setting the more it progresses, and it made me question the impact it would have on our world. I mean people always talk about an asteroid hitting earth, but I haven’t experienced or read about scenarios where it hits the moon and the impact it would have on humanity.

I gave this book a 3 out of 5.

Plus, for its innovation, the thought it provoked and the thriller tone that absolutely glares you in the eye with the madness created, minus because I didn’t connect with it in similar fashion to the likes of The Interrogators Notebook, which I still love and wish someone would take to screen.

Although classified as medical fiction The Heart Warrior's Mother, is a true reflection on a mother’s journey with her new-born child that’s born with a serious congenital heart defect.

The story takes us through the trials and tribulations of not only an illness but also the added pressures in South Africa where families must deal with power outages, strikes, covid restrictions and limited access to transplants.

It’s a story of unyielding love, sacrifice, spiritual growth, and the struggles with faith in an extremely dynamic, political, and cultural setting.

It makes us question, what advantages these struggling patients might miss out on, it makes us understand how much easier or better things might have been if they didn’t struggle with the most basic things like power interruptions, water shortages, access to medical care, faster transport, limited access to roads and then of course the added pressures of not being able to stand by these patients due to covid restriction.

I need to applaud the author on the great character cast. She really managed to draw me into all motherly emotions, from the decisions that had to be made, the pressure it put on the relationships she has with her husband, her first born, her parents’ other patients and medical specialists. The obvious tone being that a mother would never give up, no matter how hard the fight, how tough the decision. When it comes to giving your child the best chance, you give everything you have.

Five Stars on this heart-warming tribute to everyone dealing with someone with similar struggles. A true tearjerker. So, keep that box of tissues close by.

From skylarking at school to a professorship at the best university in Africa. It's all here in this collection of loosely related memoir-essays: all twists in the winding road the author travelled to become a female computer science professor at the University of cape Town. Book Review - Sarah J Maas - House Of SKy And Breath - Book 2 - Crescent City Series

This book was super entertaining in all the ways that a perfect-- sit down, get away-- book should be.

It was the perfect mixture of adventure, thrill, fantasy, mystery, surprise.

It has quirky characters with witty words and some great world building. The end of this book left me yearning to understand the tie in with ACOTAR. I felt way more satisfied coming to terms with the drive behind Danika, and sat on the edge of my seat to understand the whole Ruhn mind relationship thing. As it usually is with these books, you just get answers to one thing then a situation is created where you are left wide eyed to ponder the next.

But in a nutshell, yes, yes and yes for everything that Book one had me question.

The only issue I can raise --and I know I might be crucified for this BUT, -- the smut in this book, for me - was seriously overdone. It honestly pulled me away from the very thing that I craved. I usually read these books in like two days max but this one I was sitting on for about a week because I found myself getting annoyed at the excessively detailed word porn that deviated from the plot for many characters that I honestly enjoyed.

I really enjoy Sarah J's writing but in some instances this book particularly just became way to graphic for me in instances where I felt it wasn't required. I mean honestly we know Bryce and Hunt enjoy to entertain each other, we don't need to know how they are doing it all the time. I would have stopped going into detail about how, where, how hard etc after they did it the first time because that progressed the story to show she was a conduit for power but from there onwards - WHY? WHY? WHY? I feel we are all pretty grown up to allow our minds to wonder without having to focus on the explicit Kama-Sutra moves and genital referrals some of these characters undertake.

Having said that, I will most definitely read whatever comes out after this, as there is a lot more in the pipeline to happen, but if the word porn continues like it did in this one, I'll sadly be skipping many pages just to focus on what I find way more interesting.

So Three out of Five on this for me.

This book, best described in my view, is a combination of something along the lines of -- The Witcher, meets Game of Thrones, meets Interview with a Vampire -- with the vampires, sticking to what we know from Dracula.

It's a hefty novel - 879 pages in hard copy and 1726 if you read it on your Note or something, like me. So definitely not a book that you are going to do in one sitting. Imagine binge watching GOT. Here you will literally be binge sitting EOTV, of which there will be a total of three or four books in the end. So prepare yourself for plenty mental exhaustion.

This book launched in September 2021, has a whopping 3,844 reviews on Goodreads alone. The plot, without getting into 2 much details ( because I know this annoys some of you people) revolves around Gabriel de Leon, a silversaint ( mortal mother, vampire sire), who is a member of a brotherhood sworn to defend church and the realm from creatures of the night. It's a political plot intertwined with heroism, romance and sacrifice that plays off in three parts.

Whilst the story revolves around vampires, the essence of it focuses on the loss of belief and purpose.

In a nutshell, it's an adult series with the perfect combination of Fight, Flight, Fantasy, Mystery and Drama with beautifully added illustrations done by Bon Orthwick. It's the type of book you will want to see from a cinematic point of view, as it would be equally entertaining to the best series out there. Provided it's done by the right people.

There is plenty of Fuckery, ( as in use of the word) and in some instances the deed, throughout the darkly layered pages, which I found entertaining but am sure many readers might not. So heads up on that.

All in all for me it's a A+ on worldbuilding, character casting, violence and drama.

A must read for anyone that wants to be engrossed by a story.
