Hair Tutorial | Double Side Braid Three Ways

Today I'm sharing one of my go-to hair styles for my 4 day unwashed hair. Braids are deceiving in that they can seem like they are a time-consuming endeavor; but t's easily become one of my weekly hair styles. I love that each of the three styles offer a completely different look and you can take them from day to night with ease!

I've been wanting to share some of my braids with you for SO long! I am glad I can finally sit down and take the time to film and publish a hair tutorial. Please let me know if this video was easy to follow/hear/see, etc, and if not I'll update with your tips and criticisms for the next video!

How I Get Our Cloth Diapers Clean

As some of you may have seen in prior posts or on Instagram, we have been using cloth diapers for Gracie since she was six months old! We absolutely love using them, but I'm afraid to admit, that it's taken around a year to perfect our wash routine. I'm sure you can imagine how sensitive, and potentially messy a cloth diaper routine can get, so it's important to have a good method set in place.

One of the things I've learned is that part of a good cloth diaper wash method is having a powerful detergent! Cloth diapers are exposed to all kinds of crazy germs and smells. Some moms have to deal with things like yeast and mold if they aren't careful and have a good, preventative wash routine in place. For this reason, I am pretty religious about making sure I do these three things.

HOW I GET OUR CLOTH DIAPERS CLEAN

1. Wash cloth diapers at least twice a week.

Depending on your stash size, you may want to wash more frequently, but at this point we get a away with twice a week. When our dirty diaper bin is full, we wash, whether or not we've used the whole stash. It honestly keeps the whole house smelling better, haha.

2. Utilize an exceptional detergent.

In the beginning, I tried several detergents. I even tried to make my own at home once; that was a disaster. I just could not figure out how to make Gracie's cloth to stop smelling bad. Then I figured it out...there are just some things you must succumb to, one of those is the power of a good detergent. Persil ProClean has a 2-in-1 pro-lift cleaning power that I think really aids in getting those diapers squeaky clean. I haven't had any smell issues since I started using it! I picked it up for a great price (using this $2 off coupon) at Walmart.

3. Know your washer settings; they are different for everyone.

For someone who has never used cloth before, it's so overwhelming when you go to wash them for the first time. I found this chart from Fluff University to be very helpful. It allows you to look up the model of your washing machine and adjust the settings accordingly. We do a pre-wash with a 1/2 cap of Persil ProClean 2-in-1 detergent, and then a main wash with one capful of the same detergent! It's proven to work very well for us, and the diapers are now smelling super fresh, thankfully.

Date Night Style + A Link-Up

Date night can look different for everyone - this is my romantic take on a date night look! I styled a romper from Pitaya (they have such great options!) and I love the simple grey with the leopard wedge! What's your idea of a perfect date night? I really like going to dinner, or walking around beautifully lit downtown areas. However, don't get me wrong - PJ's, popcorn, and a movie is also an amazing date night ;)

February Capsule Wardrobe | Week One Recap

I've been doing a capsule wardrobe challenge for the last week! I survived week one, and I must say, I'm having a blast. There was one day that I didn't even want to get dressed (ha!) but I ended up throwing something on for a quick trip to the store anyway. I can't believe there's only three more weeks left!

Overall, I find getting ready in the morning to be very relaxing, and I honestly feel like I'm wearing my favorite pieces anyway, so it doesn't feel like I'm limited in any way. My only critique is the shoes - there was one day where I wanted to wear my tan booties but opted for gray since that's what was in my capsule. I can definitely see myself doing this more often. I already feel the need to purge my closet, and, honestly, my entire house LOL!

Recipe for Looking "Put Together" + A Link-Up

You won't believe how easy this outfit was to put together. It looks complicated, but really the formula goes something like this. Start with black leggings - they are the blank canvas! Add a sweater. That is the deciding factor in your color palate. I went with burgundy, so when choosing a hat, the obvious choice was bordeaux. Lastly shoes and bag! The brown combo of these boots and my refurbished (almost real) Louis Vuitton bag are a classic, and can be paired with almost any color-combo. And voilà, you've got yourself a "put-together" look. Babywearing | How to do a Double Hammock Carry (DH)

Capsule Wardrobe Challenge Intro + My Capsule Items

Have you ever heard of a capsule wardrobe? They were very popular a few years ago when blogging was first on the rise, and then they sort of fell by the wayside. Some of my favorite bloggers, like Kendi Everyday, and What I Wore used to do them often, so I decided to bring it back!

During the whole month of February I am going to be styling the same thirty clothing items! I am so excited to be trying a capsule wardrobe out because it is something I've wanted to do for so long! Because I adore the community that blogging brings, I'm asking my readers and friends/family to participate with me! I already filmed a video (see below) on the items I chose, and even created a Facebook group to share daily outfit threads for people who want to share what's in their capsule! Read on to learn more about what a capsule wardrobe is, and why you should try one out!

WHAT IS A CAPSULE WARDROBE?

A capsule wardrobe is where you choose a specific number of key clothing items, usually basics or neutrals, and mix and match those pieces for a specific amount of time. Some prefer to do it monthly, while others have a capsule for specific seasons! This time, I am just trying it out for a month, but who knows? I may love it so much I'll want to purge my whole closet.

WHY SHOULD I USE A CAPSULE WARDROBE?

There are really three reasons that people use capsule wardrobes. They are all really great reasons, and will differ from person to person!

1. To shop their own closet.
Some people (myself included) cannot believe how many items of clothing they own, yet do not wear! You won't believe how giant my closet is, and how much stuff I own, but I probably wear 30% of it, if that.

2. To save money.
Husbands around the world are rejoicing at the thought of saving money on clothes, am I right? No, really, we all love to save money!

3. To declutter and practice simplicity + minimalism.
I watched a couple of documentaries (I'm a total documentary junkie) and it made me realize how many things I have, and how obsessed I am with owning stuff, and I wanted to do this to take a step back from the fast-paced "I have to own everything that's cute and new" world that fashion can entail, and get creative!

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE IN A CAPSULE WARDROBE CHALLENGE?

Like I said, we are doing a capsule wardrobe challenge starting next week (FEBRUARY 1st) and I would love for you to join us! All you have to do is follow the steps below:

1. Pick 30 key items.
Ideally 5 bottoms (pants/jeans/skirts), 10 tops (tees/dressy/sweaters), 5 shoes (a variety is best!), 10 miscellaneous items (so dresses, hats, scarves, etc.) Note: The items you choose depend on your lifestyle. I'm a stay at home/working from home mom, but when I was teaching my items would have been drastically different, so keep that in mind! Also, we don't include PJ's :)

2. Set your items aside and photograph them to share in our Facebook group!
I would love to see what items you chose and what you do during the day, are you a working professional, college student, mom? Let's get to know each other!

3. Get dressed and SHARE!
The work is really all in step one - haha, but before you leave or at the end of each day, snap a picture of what you wore, so you can show the world how you styled the same 30 items for 28 days! You'll be a pro after February is over!

10 Sweaters to Last You Through Winter + a Link-Up

This cold season has been great for me and my evolving mom style. I've learned that two things help make an outfit complete for me when it comes to cold weather. Comfy leggings (love these $14 ones from Boutique Amore) and an oversized sweater. You can pair these with ANYTHING. A pom-pom beanie and OTK boots, or some booties and a floppy hat like I did here. The possibilities are truly endless. Because it's likely going to be pretty cold for a few more months I've rounded up my favorite oversized sweaters to last you the rest of the winter months!

Three Tips to Keep Your Child Safe When Posting Their Photo Online

As a mom who both cares about my child's safety, yet loves sharing photos of her bright and cheery face I struggle with whether to post her picture online. I know many parents who have the same fears. I've figured out a few simple ways to be sure I am protecting her, but allowing others to enjoy all she has to offer the world through her sweet smile. Read on for three tips for keeping your children safe when posting their photos on social media.

It took me a year to post my baby's face online. I just couldn't get comfortable with it. Especially after reading another blogger's story about her baby's photos being stolen by children pornography sites, I wanted to vomit just thinking about posting my little one. But as she grew up and started to do cute things, and wear cute outfits, and hug me during our shoots, I didn't want to leave those things out. My website became an avenue through which I celebrate motherhood, so how could I leave her out of it? I decided it was time to figure out the best way to show her off without being too lax.

THREE TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE WHEN POSTING THEIR PHOTO ON SOCIAL MEDIA

1. Make sure your child isn't looking directly into the camera lens.

Apparently predators prefer for their victims to make eye contact with them (seriously, absolutely disgusting), so they want the person to be looking straight into the lens. I try to be vigilant when posting G's photo and only pick ones where she is looking off, or looking down or even just the back of her head. I have tons of photos of her on my Instagram during her first year of life where it's just her little body, haha. A mom has to do what a mom has to do!

2. Watermark your photos.

This is something I do for every photo that Grace's face is showing at all. It sometimes doesn't look the prettiest, but I am to the point where that doesn't matter. with Photoshop and all sorts of editing software it may be a bit easier to steal photos, but for the most part, a watermark across their chest or near your child's face will help deter others from stealing your photos.

3. Try to post photos where the child has an adult in it.

Online predators prefer photos of just children, which is absolutely disgusting. Therefore, I am very selective in choosing photos where Grace is alone. More often than not I choose ones where she is turned away from me if I am not in the picture with her. Keeping you or another adult in the photo says "this is my baby, not yours, you sick, disgusting pervert." Okay, maybe I'm a bit over the top, but honestly - you don't mess with a mama bear and her cubs.

New Mom Essentials | Items I Used Daily in the First Year

I've had quite a few questions over the last eighteen months as to which products I felt were absolutely necessary for new moms. However, I'll start with this disclaimer: every mom is different. Some parents wear their babies, and others choose not to. Some moms bottle feed and don't breastfeed, and that's okay too. So before you get worried, know that parenting looks different for every family. I love and appreciate you for being a parent and this is a judgment-free zone where I simply share my experiences! Here are products I used every day as a co-sleeping, breastfeeding, babywearing, documenting-crazed, germaphobe.

A TULA BABY CARRIER

This is number one on my list, and if you've followed my blog for any given amount of time you'll know that I wear my baby/toddler daily. My baby carriers saved my life. Read more about how babywearing affects my experience with motherhood here.

A HIGH CHAIR COVER

For the germaphobes out there...(myself included) this one's for you. I cannot stand the filth and grime of high chairs. I refuse to use a high chair without some sort of barrier because food and slobber germs are the worst kind of germs. I used to wait tables... I know how often high chairs get wiped down (insert grossed-out face here). This Summer Infant one is pretty cute though, and it is super cushy!

A CARSEAT COVER

My carseat covers always served as a sunshade, but also a blanket, and a burp cloth! I even used mine as a playmat at a friend's house once when Grace was super tiny. These things have so many uses and are a must-have for the carseat. I love these Muslin ones from Summer Infant.

A FUNCTIONAL DIAPER BAG

Fawn Design has had my heart for quite sometime. I've gone through four different diaper bags in 20 months, and finally settled on this functional, simple, and super cute diaper bag. I love how it has several pockets, and you can carry it three different ways. I wear Grace often, so the back pack option is so valuable.

A CAR ORGANIZER
I'm an organization freak - well at least I used to be. Some of that has changed since becoming a mom and I have to let it go. It's okay to have a messy house sometimes and it's okay to pick up the same blocks three times in the same day, haha. Such is life. But anyway, the worst thing is when you have bows, diapers, snacks, shoes, blankets, and toys strewn about your car. This car organizer saved my sanity; therefore, it makes the list!

This mom tool is literally the most versatile item and only takes up a tiny bit of room in your diaper bag. I love how this product serves as a carseat cover, a cart cover, a high chair cover, a nursing cover, and even a scarf! I've also used it as a burp cloth or to clean up spills in the car. It's so functional. Citi Babies has the most adorable and stylish prints too!

BABY BOOK
Lucy Darling Shop is my go-to place for baby books. I love how detailed her books are and they have so much character. I didn't feel like I needed to be super creative because the books are perfectly decorated and I was just able to add the information and photos in. With mom brain strong the first year, I needed all the help I could get :)

$99 Over The Knee Boots (Lowland Dupe) + A Link-Up

I've been wanting to share these Lowland boot dupes for quite a while now. I absolutely love the price tag on these, and I can vouch for the quality as well. My search for the perfect Lowland dupe was a long one. Stuart Weitzman Lowlands run around $800, if you're unfamiliar and I wasn't about to spend that amount of money on a pair of shoes...no way.

SHAFT HEIGHT IS KEY

I was thorough in my search because I've seen tons have claimed that they've found the perfect boot that is comparable to the Stuart Weitzman Lowland yet the shaft is way too short. These boots that I found are almost the EXACT same shaft height!. There is a .7 ish difference. This was important to me as I was trying to replicate the look of the Lowlands! Shaft heigh also affects how well the boots stay up on whatever part of your leg they reach, so it totally makes sense that that part is key.

Energizing Acai Protein Smoothie Recipe (VIDEO)

This hearty and icy deliciousness is my go-to smoothie recipe right now. It's full of protein from peanut butter + medjool dates, and has tons of antioxidants from the acai. The chia seeds and cacao nibs give it a bit of a crunch and make this a magical superfood breakfast that you must try out! I made it in my new Vitamix Ascent 2300. Check out the video below! Also, make sure your volume is turned up cause I'm a huge fan of the song it's edited to, haha.

ENERGIZING ACAI PROTEIN SMOOTHIE:

Ingredients:

2 ripe, spotty bananas
2 packages of frozen acai berry (I used Sambazon)
3-4 pitted, soft medjool dates
1/2 cup ice cubes
1 tablespoon coconut flakes
1 tablespoon cacao nibs
1 tablespoon chia seeds
2 tablespoons fresh ground peanut butter
1/2 - 3/4 cup almond milk (or any non-dairy milk) - just add it as you go and add more if needed.
Add cacao nibs and coconut flakes on top

Method:

This is a pretty simple recipe! As you can see in the video, you literally just pour everything into the blender and blend as long as you like to get your preferred consistency! I prefer my smoothies to be thicker in texture, but if you like yours to be more creamy all you have to do is blend longer and increase your settings to go faster. (Which is a super nice perk!) This drink can easily be made into a bowl as well, just simply use less almond milk and top with fresh fruit and granola.

Using the Vitamix blender was SO easy. I've never owned one and can honestly say I'll probably never live without it again. As a plant-based mom, it is so convenient for almond/cashew milks, nut butters, smoothies and bowls, and I use it as a food processor. I've even used this thing to grind up oats for oat flour in my banana bread. I am officially in love, you guys.

A Guide To Buying A Mattress | New Year, Better Night Of Sleep

It took us awhile but one of the most important things to us during the process to 'green' and detoxify our home was our mattress. If you think about it, you spend an average of 56 hours per week (at least) using that thing - it needs to be a good one. I did a lot of research when looking for our mattress that we currently have thanks to Tuft & Needle, so I wanted to share my findings!

THINGS I LEARNED WHEN RESEARCHING MATTRESSES:

Mattresses are typically super marked up.

Some mattresses can be marked up 6-12 times past what they're worth. This is true for many furniture stores, but mattresses especially. Sales people need to make commission and storefronts have to meet rent, so you have an increase in price when the mattress itself isn't worth nearly what you pay.

The materials most mattresses are made of aren't ideal.

You can read tons more about this here, but some mattresses are made of latex (which isn't ideal and pretty outdated), memory foam (which results in hotter sleep at night because you sink into it), springs (which aren't supportive at all) I mean really when have you laid on a spring mattress and thought, "man I'm super comfortable right now" ha! Lastly some mattresses are made of egg-crate foam which I've personally never felt was comfortable and apparently you're paying for a mattress yet getting 50% less material! So silly.

Layers = glue = chemicals.

No, this isn't a math lesson, it's just common sense. The mattresses that have layers of materials are glued together with adhesive that gives off chemicals and also reduces airflow.

Buying online > Buying in store.

More math, I know... I hate equations, not sure why I'm using them, but really. The reason I prefer to buy online is that you can get it much cheaper. You basically cut out the middle man and reduce emissions and transportation as well, which helps our environment! I'm all for anything that is sustainable! Also, many mattresses are made outside of the U.S. which means we have to import the materials before even transporting them to the location where they're sold.

My solution?

Tuft & Needle.

We've had our mattress for around 60 days now. Tuft & Needle sent it to me to review for you, and to be completely honest I've wanted to really use it and sleep on it before writing this review. I never endorse products that I don't fully believe in or use myself. It's important to me to be honest and transparent with you.

I love Tuft & Needle for the following reasons:

1. Their mattresses are made in the U.S. and shipped to you directly.

2. Their products have less glue and adhesives so you don't have to breathe in as many toxins.

3. There are only two layers of materials in their mattresses versus the typical 4+.

4. Their products are SUPER fairly priced.

5. They give back to the community. Mattresses that are returned to them are donated to local non-profits.

6. They have a 100 Night Trial program! Read more about that here!

7. T&N has a 10 year limited warranty.

8. Their special foam is Certipur certified and free of PBDE flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and other harmful chemicals. (See the graphic below).

9. Tuft & Needle uses a NATURAL flame retardant. This is a huge one for me.

10. They're environmentally friendly, as they are made in the U.S. and shipped directly to the residence vs. additional transportation to stores and importations, etc.

TIPS FOR BUYING A MATTRESS:

1. Buy one that's manufactured in the U.S.

2. Find a material that is breathable and less than 4 layers.

3. Find a company that delivers to your door vs. trying it out in store.

4. Try to find one that emits the least amount of chemicals.

5. Do your research and shop around for a fair price.

Five EASY Ways To Live More Sustainably This Year

Well, hello there, 2017! You're looking mighty fine in so many different ways. We have big plans for this year, and even though I'm not so much a resolutions person, but I AM a goal-oriented person.

One of my biggest personal goals this year is to live a more sustainable lifestyle. As you know, we have already started this by eating a vegan diet, or cloth diapering, and recycling, but I want to be better. I want to start a compost, and try to reduce the amount of waste I create. I also want to try and buy refurbished or reused items when possible. The possibilities are endless, and at first it can seem SO overwhelming. That's why I'm writing this post. This is for the busy working professional. For the mom who has five children. For the guy who knows not one thing about living sustainably.

These are five easy ways to live a more sustainable live to ensure that our planet is taken care of. As I've stated before, I do this for my baby. She is my motivator. I would do anything for her, so taking care of her Earth, her air, her environment? It's completely worth it.

FIVE WAYS TO LIVE MORE SUSTAINABLY IN 2017

1. Use reusable grocery store bags.

Some places, like California are catching on and realizing that plastic bags are a major luxury and completely unnecessary. Our culture is built upon convenience so having 6-10 plastic bags of stuff versus maybe fitting it all into 2 reusable bags is just insane. Plus, plastic isn't recyclable so it's literally resources that can't be reused and bogs down our landfills and in turn, negatively affects our environment.

2. Save and reuse your glass and plastic containers.

This is one that I've learned can take practice. Not all containers are practical and can sometimes result in having too much clutter lying around. But glass jars (think pasta sauce and coconut oil jars) are great for storing items that you would refrigerate in plastic tupperware!

P.S. If you have them lying around -- use mason jars for EVERYTHING, from drinks to storing foods like fruits and veggies and granola! I found them for super cheap in a case (brand new) while thrifting and it's the best.

3. Buy local.

Buying your food and resources local reduces the cost of transportation for the items and materials you are using! This positively impacts our environment, AND allows you to lead a healthier lifestyle if you're buying local fruits and veggies. Shopping with CSA boxes allow you to buy in season produce (usually at a great discount) so make sure to see if your community has a farmer's market and check it out! Chances are you'll meet some really cool people and save the planet in the meantime.

4. Reuse your food scraps - this sounds weird but I promise it's easy!

Like I said, it sounds weird. How does one reuse food? But I promise it's actually quite simple! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this Huffington Post article about how to repurpose orange peels for household uses! It's so genius and majorly sustainable.

Another way you can reuse food scraps has to do with a video I recently posted on my blog Facebook page that shows you how to make veggie stock/broth out of vegetable scraps! This is majorly genius. Not only are you reusing something that would otherwise end up in the trash, but you're saving yourself from having to buy veggie broth in the future. I know this concept seems super simple, but we live in a world of convenience. You wouldn't believe how much JOY I get from doing things myself. For knowing that I can make a small difference.

5. Be more energy and water efficient.

This reminds me of something my grandparents used to make us do when we were growing up - it was always, "make sure you keep the turn the light off" to save money, but now it's to save energy. Lights and water are resources that (believe it or not) don't come free. There is a price to pay for every resource we consume, so lessening how much we use those, but turning off the sink while we brush our teeth, or not turning on every light in our house in the evening does make a difference somewhere out there.

Guide to Formal Dresses for the Nursing or Pregnant Mom + A Link-Up

Are you a nursing mama? Maybe you're expecting? Then this post is for you! I had THE hardest time finding a cute (aka non-frumpy) formal dress for the few weddings and other events I've been to recently! I have totally been wanting to share these finds for a while! This sequin dress is absolutely divine and comes in three colors. I think you'll like the other options I've linked below too because not everyone is big on full body sequins, haha.

NURSING: ACCESSIBILITY IS KEY

When choosing a dress or any outfit for nursing, the key is accessibility. I've learned that you really have to get creative if you're opting for something that's non-maternity specific (which I try to do). If you have straps, you can easily pull them down, of if there's a plunge neckline you can just whip your boob out through the middle. I've honestly done it all. My favorite is the strapless because you just pul it down!

PREGNANCY: WAISTLINE IS EVERYTHING

If you're pregnant - you can definitely find dresses that are non-maternity, it's all about the waistline! It must hit right above your boobs so there's room for baby or you can opt for a body-con dress if you're brave! It's the one time you get to confidently show off that belly bump! Pregnant bodies are simply beautiful; embrace them!

How To Bake Dairy-Free | Easiest Egg Replacement: Flax Egg

I seriously couldn't wait another day to share this with you. Learning how to make this egg replacement has changed my life. I say that not only because I'm vegan and don't eat eggs, but because it's made out of one of the easiest, least perishable, healthiest foods out there: flaxseed. If you don't know what flaxseed is, definitely check out this article on Web MD that headlines: "Preliminary studies show that it may help fight heart disease, diabetes and breast cancer."

Yes, you can prevent breast cancer AND replace a highly perishable food when cooking and baking! Read on to figure out how easy this is. It takes all of 30 seconds, AKA, the time it takes to crack open an egg (without the mess).

EASY EGG REPLACEMENT: FLAX EGG

What You'll Need:

1 tablespoon flaxseed meal
3 tablespoons water
1 small dish
1 spoon for stirring

Method:

This is done in LITERALLY thirty seconds.

1. Measure out the flaxseed, then put into the dish.
2. Pour the water over the flaxseed and stir to combine.
3. Let it sit for 5 minutes (or while you complete other steps of your baking) and then it should thicken quite a bit!

This is the equivalent to one egg. So if your recipe called for two eggs, you would use 2 tbs. flaxseed and 6 tbs. water, and so forth! Simple as that, and WAY better for you!
