I have one, and it's a family recipe and a family favorite. The past several times I've made Chocolate Caramel Layer Bars, the consistency of the dough has been off. I suspect it's because cake mixes have gotten smaller in the years since my mother in law shared the recipe with me. The cake mixes that I currently have in my cupboard* weigh 15.25 ounces, while the standard cake mix when the recipe was written was 18.25 ounces. Perhaps the missing three ounces of dry ingredients (about 1/6 of the mix!) is responsible for my not right recipe consistency.

I came across a cake mix upsizer recipe (and subsequently found the same recipe on many other websites), and decided to try it. The problem (not an actual problem) was all of the recipes were written in bulk: quantities of six. And I rarely need to use a cake mix for a recipe, so I rarely need to upsize my cake mix. So I did the division for you, to make up the difference for one cake. And now I'm sharing it here in case you rarely need to upsize a cake mix for a recipe, too.

Here ya go:

For most cakes:

Add the following to your dry cake mix, then continue with your recipe.

3 T flour

2T + 2t granulated sugar

1/3t baking powder (overfill your 1/4t or underfill your 1/2t)

a pinch of baking soda (1/24 of a teaspoon to be precise)

For chocolate cakes (including German chocolate and red velvet):

Add the following to your dry cake mix, then continue with your recipe.

2 T flour

2T + 2t granulated sugar

1 T baking cocoa

1/3t baking powder (overfill your 1/4t or underfill your 1/2t)

a pinch of baking soda (1/24 of a teaspoon to be precise)

Remember, this upsizer is only for when you're making a recipe that starts with cake mix, not when you're making a cake with the cake mix--the instructions on the box are written to work with that size cake mix.

I hope y'all find this helpful--let me know if you try it!

* I have cake mixes in my cupboard, despite my general dislike of cake mix ingredients, because every now and then my husband will ask, randomly, if we have cake. And we never randomly have cake. But if we have cake mix in the cupboard, I can tell him that yes, we do have some-assembly-required cake.

2nd week of AP testing menu plan

It's the second week of AP testing and I have three test days this week. One of the tests I'm proctoring is Music Theory, and one of the test elements of Music Theory There are over 24 students taking this test. And I'm the only proctor. I asked the coordinator if we were really going to be there an extra four hours plus to get the recording done. Why not post this completely formed post from three years ago as is? I haven't been invited to any online MLM parties in a long time--are they still a thing? Or are my friends and relatives just not having them? Anyway, here ya go:

* * * * *

Have you noticed that more folks are hosting their MLM parties online these days? The first I was invited to was in April(ish) of 2020, so I'm not sure if it was happening before then, or if online parties were born of pandemic necessity. I kinda like the online format. It means that I can "attend" parties thrown by far-away friends, and I don't feel as pressured* to actually buy anything at an online party. The most important positive factor of online parties is that I don't have to interact with anyone in real life.

I'm not a fan of the Facebook forum, because ugh, Facebook. I am also not a fan of the week-long party. My favorite was that one in April(ish) of 2020, where most of the action happened on one day, and then we had 4 or 5 days to place our orders. I was able to devote one afternoon to refreshing the page, and I was sure that I didn't miss anything.

Here's what's bugging me today. The past three of these things that I've participated in, I have asked the sales consultant for a link to a specific product that I was not able to find on the website. None of the three actually gave me a link, and one of them, when I said I couldn't find a specific product and could they give me a link, sent me a screenshot of the item. I guess to prove that it was, actually, available? But dude. I just told you that I can't find it on the website. A screenshot is not going to help. And in order to get that screenshot, you went to the product page. Would it not have been just as easy to just give me the stinking link at that point? Do you want to make a sale, or not**?

That's what gets me. I'm expressing interest in buying a product, and asking you, the sales consultant, to make it a little easier for me. I know for darn sure that if we were at an in-person party, you wouldn't be giving me a product number or a screenshot. You would be finding the item, and writing it down on the order form for me.

Is anybody here an MLM sales person? Do you know why these people are unwilling to give out product links?

* * * * *

* Notice, I didn't say I don't feel pressured at all.

** I did not purchase anything from that party.

AP Testing Season & Menu Plan for the Week of May 5

It's AP testing season, and y'all know what that means.

Actually, you probably don't know what that means, at least not what I mean when I say you know what that means, because I don't think I ever told you: I'm an AP proctor. And being an AP proctor is exhausting*.

As of right now, I am scheduled to proctor 10** AP exams over the 3 week regular and late testing period. There will probably be more. It's kind of a lot.

It's my third year, so now I know I'm going to be exhausted, rather than having the exhaustion sneak up on me, so I'm preparing mentally and environmentally. I'm planning meals with testing in mind, and making some ahead of time. Fingers crossed I don't completely crash each day I have testing (and then stay crashed the next day).

Here's what's on the menu this week:

Lasagna (making this on Monday: baking and eating on Tuesday, plus an extra to freeze), garlic toast, salad, raw carrots

Fend for yourself

<a href="https://40aprons.com/restaurant-style-chicken-fried-rice/" Oh, and then there's being in charge.

** Bubby's taking three, all in the first week. He's way more resilient than I am these days, and he's also used to being out of the house for at least 8 hours a day on week days, so I feel like it will be a less exhausting experience for him.

*** We might be fending for ourselves and/or going out to eat this day because I have two tests during the day, plus two choir concerts that evening.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bluefield5.blogspot.com/2025/05/ap-testing-season-menu-plan-for-week-of.html' title='AP Testing Season & field is a strange sport (and I'm glad to be a part of it)

So I came to my blog to look up a recipe, and, as I tend to do when I visit my blog, I looked back at some of the most recent posts. First of all, I believed, with all of my brain, and down to my toes, that I had posted (at least) once in 2024. Nope. I did not.

And second, I noticed an asterisk in one of the posts. It looked like this:

...track and field is a strange sport*

And the asterisk said:

* More on this in a future blog post

And I was appalled, because I did not, in fact, write more about this in a future blog post. Well. This is me, keeping my word.

Track and field is a strange sport. There are so many different events, right? There's running short distances. There's running long distances. There's running medium distances. There's running short or medium distances while jumping over things that have been placed in your way. There's running various distances in teams carrying a metal tube. There's running and jumping long and running and jumping high. There's running and jumping three times in a row. There's spinning in circles and throwing things. There's running with a pole, planting the pole, and using the pole to carry yourself over a bar, where you then crash down on a padded mat. Hopefully. And that's not all. That's just what happens at a high school track & field meet in my state.

I love this about track & field. There's literally something for everyone. Don't like to run? Well, my friend, you can throw things instead. Don't like to jump three times? Why not jump just once? <strike>Have a death wish</strike> crave adrenaline? Try pole vault or hurdles.

So there's a lot going on, right? And a lot of it is happening at once. And if you're a parent, your kid is participating in, at most, 4 events. And those events might include both the first and the last events of the day. And so you stay, for hours. Like 4, 5, maybe even 6 hours if the meet is not efficiently run, and you spend just a few minutes* watching your kid actually compete#, and the rest of the time you cheer for the kiddos running by, or read a book, or watch the pole vaulters hurl themselves into the air on the end of a stick and marvel at their bravery, or sit miserably doing none of these things because it's raining so hard you can't see.

But wait, there's more. This might be specific to our team, because it's kind of a big team: you don't know if your kiddo will actually be going to and competing in any given track meet until a few days ahead of time. If you're on the football team, you know that there's a game every Friday, and you're going to that game unless you're injured or sick**. You may or may not play, but you know that you're obliged to be there. Track? Nope. The coach will let you know on Sunday if you're going to the meet on Tuesday. Bubby's first season, I dutifully wrote all of the track meets on my calendar at the beginning of the season. I don't do that anymore. I hold my after school schedule lightly, and wait for that Sunday evening email.

And more. Track meets attract teams from schools you've never heard of before. They're not in your conference. They're not in your division. Sometimes, they're not even from your state. But here they are, at the same meet as you. And the meets don't matter. It doesn't matter one bit how your team does at any of the meets during the season. The conference champ is not the team that scored the most points at their meets that season. The conference champ is the team that scores the most points at the conference meet, where finally, finally, all of the teams are from your conference.

And then do you know what happens? It starts over! You go to the regional meet, and if you do well there, you'll qualify for the sectional meet, and if you do well there, you'll qualify for the state meet. So nothing matters except those last four meets of the season. And even then, while winning your conference is cool and all, it doesn't matter to move on. Clean slate for regionals. You can win your event every single time during the season, but if you have a bad day at regionals, your season is over.

Track and field is a strange collection of sporting events all rolled in to one, but I love it. You know why? Because anyone is welcome regardless of talent. Every team member is given the opportunity to compete, and every team member is celebrated for their accomplishments. There's a girl that I've been watching for three years. She runs distance events. And she comes in last almost every time***. But there she is, at the next meet, running again. I love her. I love that. It's not about winning for her. It's about showing up and doing her best for herself.

So there you go. Track & field is weird and wonderful and inspiring and oh-so-tedious, and I am so glad to be a part of it.

* * * * *

* In my case, it is less than a minute of watching my kid compete because he sprints and jumps, and those are fast events.

# One time my kiddo went to a meet as an alternate for a relay, and no other events, so I went to the meet, sat there for hours, and watched him hold the blocks for the boy who was running the first leg of the relay, because he wasn't needed. Then we left.

** And sometimes even if you're injured you go to the game.

*** One time, and only one time, I've seen her be not-last.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bluefield5.blogspot.com/2025/05/track-field-is-strange-sport-and-im.html' title='Track & target="_blank">tortillas and taco fixings

Fend for yourself

Spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic toast, green beans

Pizza, salad

Montreal grilled chicken, salad, grilled broccoli**

Hot dogs or brats, buns, chips, carrots

*Whose idea was it to do a crockpot recipe on the first Monday of the rotation? A crockpot recipe, I might add, that requires chicken to be thawed and cream cheese, that we did not yet have, to be added. That is too much for a Monday. That person should be fired.

**The other day, we were eating supper, and I said, look, everybody! There are carrots on the table! Because that's what I say*** when I want my people to eat the vegetables that are on the table. And one of the children kind of sighed with his posture, and I said, you'd rather have broccoli. And the kid nodded. And I said, or asparagus, or Brussels sprouts, or cauliflower. And the kid agreed. And the husband was incredulous. He couldn't wrap his mind around someone liking grilled or roasted broccoli more than raw carrots. And I, too, was incredulous, that my kid's father didn't already know this about the kid, having lived with said kid for all of said kid's life.

***Well, I don't always say carrots. I will say the name of the vegetable that is actually on the table. Because if I said, look everybody, there are carrots on the table, and there were, in fact, no carrots on the table, that would undermine my credibility.

Menu plan for the week of May 8

I'm late with the menu plan this week. target="_blank">2 weeks ago.

In other news, our microwave stopped working. We're fairly confident that it's a switch issue and we'll be able to fix it, so don't worry about us. In the meantime, we've been using alternative means to reheat leftovers, and we've been extra vigilant about taking things out to thaw with plenty of time. I've found myself thinking, though, how did people reheat leftovers before household microwaves were common? I used to be super annoyed when the meal plan had to change for some reason, like a meeting I hadn't known about, which meant more of the peoples weren't going to be around for supper, or a practice being canceled, which meant more of the peoples were going to be around for supper. I found this to be especially true when I planned more than one week at once. I'm not sure why. Maybe it was just because, if I was planning more than a week in advance, it was so much more likely that unanticipated events would occur at some point in the execution of that plan.

This time, though? It doesn't bother me so much. At the beginning of the week, I take a look at the calendar, and I take a look at the meal plan, and I move meals around if they're not going to work for the day they're planned. And there's been a lot of meals not working on the day for which they were planned because track and field is a strange sport*. And also, life.

This week, for instance, we're not going to be able to eat supper together on Tuesday, so the fend for self originally scheduled for Wednesday shifted to Tuesday. Monday's meal moved to Wednesday, because we'll be celebrating a birthday on Monday with the birthday boy's choice of going out to eat. Tuesday's meal was moved to Friday because I already did some meal prep for that Tuesday meal. Friday's meal was taken off the schedule because it's something (pizza) we have every week, and I felt like no one would miss it this week.

And it's all fine! It's ok! I'm feeling sanguine** about it, instead of annoyed. Yay!

And yay for food! Here's what's on the menu this week:

Supper:

Out to eat, cake & This week, I needed a couple of the items I was prepping to be available on Thursday, so I went ahead and did the other stuff, too, and I thought I'd take you along.

First, I prepped my pizza crust for the month. I added all of the dry ingredients, except the yeast, to quart sized mason jars, to make pizza crust prep super easy. I just add the wet ingredients to the bread machine, dump on the dry, and top with yeast before starting the machine's dough cycle. Making pizza crust in a bread machine is already really easy, but by measuring the ingredients ahead of time, it makes it that much easier. During my first month of monthly meal planning, I actually made four batches of pizza dough on the first Friday of the month, which I froze. But I didn't like how those frozen crusts turned out, plus they took up precious freezer space, so now I'm doing this.

Next up was jello cups, followed by peeling and cutting carrots. These are both items that can be purchased already prepared, but both are less expensive to buy unprepared. In the case of carrots, they also last longer in the fridge and taste better, if purchased with the peels on.

I made some buns to use for hamburgers this weekend as well as for sandwiches next week--they're in the oven right now. I also put together a mini sweet potato casserole and its topping, for Hubby to enjoy on Easter.

Not pictured are the extra Shepherd's pie that I made on Monday and froze, the hard boiled eggs I made on Wednesday because all of the egg cartons in the house were in use and I had more fresh eggs that needed to be cartonized, and the sausage that I cooked up for this weekend's pizza and future quiches.

Also not shown are the three Bluefield-family-sized bags of boneless skinless chicken breast that I covered with marinades before freezing and the two pounds of cut-into-small-pieces-and-seasoned chicken that I'll use for a recipe next week and three weeks from now.

All this food prep, it's about being kind to my future self. It's also kind of about future-proofing my life. On any given day, I don't know how I'm going to feel about cooking for my family, but by getting as much of the prep done ahead of time as possible, I'm making it much less likely that I'll give up and serve cereal for supper.

What kinds of food prep do you do to make future meals easier to get on the table?

Menu plan for the week of April 3

It's April, y'all, and as you know, if you read yesterday's post, I've got meals planned for the rest of the month. Long time, no read.

Today I wanted to write about how I've been meal planning lately. Spoiler alert: it's been so.much.easier.

For years I have heard and read that once a month shopping is a way to save so.much.money. The idea is, you only shop once a month for everything for that month, and by staying out of stores the rest of the month, you're reducing impulse buys, and you're more likely to make do with what you have, versus running to the store if you discover you've run out of something.

When we lived in West Virginia, I shopped once every two weeks, because we were so far out of town. It was easier to plan meals back then, because the kids didn't really have opinions about what they did and didn't like, plus our family, as a whole, ate much less back then, so I could rely on leftovers at least once or twice a week. I mean, the kiddos were 5 and 2 when we left. How much can a 5 year old eat, versus our current at-home teenagers?

When we moved, we were much closer to grocery stores, and I fell into the habit of shopping every week. Over the years, it's become more and more difficult to plan meals for various reasons, and it became a huge chore to figure out what we were going to eat every week. I wanted to plan 2 or 4 weeks at a time, but I felt like I just couldn't get ahead. It was so difficult to get one week down, I couldn't wrap my mind around doing any more.

In January, I decided I was going to do it: I was going to bite the bullet and plan a month of meals at once (it was fortunate that the month I decided to start has only 28 days :) ). So here's how I did it.

I had already loosely defined a few days a week, for instance, we almost always have pizza on Fridays, and grilled food on Saturdays and Sundays. So I put those things into the plan. Then I filled in the other days, for two weeks, with themes, like Mondays were casserole-type things with ground beef, and Thursdays were pressure cooker rice bowls. Finally, I copied those two weeks to the next two weeks, et voila! I had 4 weeks of meals planned.

And let me tell ya, it wasn't quite et voila. It actually took me about 3 weeks to get that first plan actually planned. I spent a lot of mental energy trying to plan a variety of proteins, styles of cooking, and flavor profiles. But I am so thankful that I spent that mental energy up front, each week when I don't have to think about it. Now whenever I think of a meal I'd like to try for the following month, I put it on the calendar right away, and generally the plan is complete by the time we finish the previous plan.

That first month, I actually attempted to get all of the shelf-stable food in my first shopping trip of the month, but I knew I'd be going back every week, since I could only fit one week's worth of milk in my fridge.

I don't think I've saved too much money over the past two months. For sure I didn't save the so.much.money I'd been promised, possibly due to prices rising, and possibly due to me already keeping pretty tight control over grocery spending. But I'll tell you what I did save: my sanity. It was so lovely to only plan once and have 4 weeks of meals on the calendar. At this point, it's easy for me to sit down on a Saturday or Sunday and make my grocery list.

So yay! Menu planning, for now at least, is not as difficult as it has been in the past. Let me know if you try it, or if you have any questions.

Up next: this week's menu plan. Stay tuned.

Menu plan for the week of December 5

It's Christmas cookie season, so I asked my kiddos what kind of Christmas treats* they would like to have.

The first kid I asked said sugar cookies.

The second kid I asked said sugar cookies. And then when I told him that his brother had already chosen sugar cookies, he said snickerdoodles.

The third kid I asked said sugar cookies, and then snickerdoodles, and then agreed with my suggestion of sourdough starter handed me a box that was labeled "banneton proofing basket kit." Take this, she said, I have an extra.

I think most people, when they hear sourdough, picture those round crusty loaves with intricate patterns carved into their tops. And one of the tools that the folks who make those types of loaves use is a banneton, which is a fancy name for a basket that holds the dough during the second rise. And I can not, for the life of me, figure out how those folks get their loaves out of their fancy baskets and into their Dutch ovens for baking without totally deflating the dough. My friend said she couldn't figure it out either. Because of that, and because there are so many other ways to use sourdough starter that my family is more likely to actually eat, I honestly had never given serious consideration to making one of those artisan loaves.

But then, the kit came into my life. When I opened the box, I was expecting to find a banneton and a banneton liner. I did find those things, along with a few other tools, but on top of all that laid the gorgeous book, Artisan Sourdough Made Simple by Emilie Raffa. I am a sucker for a beautiful cookbook, and this, my friends, is a beautiful cookbook. And now I need to make all the things, including the things that require a proofing basket. Up first, a Cinnamon raisin swirl loaf (without the raisins).

being kind to my future self lately.

As you may have gathered from last week's menu post, mealtimes have been a bit ... scattered ... around here. Sporadic. Chaotic. There has been a breakdown in our usual mealtime routines, which means, among other things that, while I usually wash dirty dishes that don't fit in the dishwasher immediately, or at least within 30 minutes, after supper, I have not, lately.

And so suddenly, it'll be 9:30 or 10 p.m.*, and the dishes will have not yet been washed, and have I mentioned that I am exhausted? Yes, yes, I have mentioned that.

But lately I've been deciding to be kind to my future self by washing the dishes, even though I'm exhausted. And my future self is always so appreciative of my past self.

Also, I feel like I need to mention** that the dish fairy hasn't shown up around here for weeks, which makes it that much more difficult to wash dishes. I mean, without the dish fairy putting them away, the clean and dry dishes from yesterday take up all of the room where I want to put the clean and wet dishes from today to dry.

I feel like it's a really good idea to ask myself, every day, "what can I do to make things easier for future Scarlet?" And I've been coming up with things each day to set future Scarlet up for success.

I'm still exhausted, though.

How about you? Do you ever think about how you can make your future self's life a little easier?

* For reference, bedtime is usually 9:01 p.m.

** I feel the need to mention this so you will feel sorry for me. I mean, no dish fairy, for weeks! How can I be expected to cope with such drudgery?

Meal plan for the week of September 12

Remember how I asked for meal ideas last week? Well, one of you actually responded! Isn't that exciting? Someone actually read a blog post, and was so moved by it that they took action.

That person suggested chicken burrito bowls, which you may recall we actually had <a href="https://bluefield5.blogspot.com/2022/08/menu-plan-for-week-of-august-15.html" I'm publishing this recipe mostly because I want to remember what I did this time that made it taste so good. But if you want to try it too, you should. It's really yummy.

I first tried Zuppa Toscana on the day our previous slow cooker fell victim to inertia. So delicious. On that day, I modified the recipe for stovetop, and the next time I made it, this time in my new crock pot, I discovered that I preferred the stovetop method, although the slow cooker is really convenient. I think it's because I like a thicker soup than the original recipe provided in the slow cooker. If you prefer a thinner soup, feel free to add water or additional broth. Later on, I found a lower carb Zuppa Toscana copycat recipe. This recipe is inspired by both.

This low carb soup is creamy and thick, with a slight spicy kick from the sausage and crushed red pepper.

Italian Sausage Cauliflower Soup

Makes about 6 servings

<a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1y-JQaUQ3RC46N8UH9jGTu47pG53URvfaPqSRp5ygjqc/edit?usp=sharing" It was a message that I didn't necessarily think was important, but the school district probably thinks every message they send is important. The important message about transportation from the email was that they would be sending a letter through the US postal service about my student's transportation.

Yup. That's what it said. And they did. They sent a letter via USPS telling me about my student's specific transportation arrangements. Which is, definitely, for sure, important information.

Now, I am a big benefit-of-the-doubt-er, so I can see why the school district might feel the need to warn me via text message that they'd be sending an email, which in turn warned me that they'd be sending a letter. I mean, they probably wanted to get the message out through as many channels as possible, so parents wouldn't miss it. And it worked, in my case. I was totally on the lookout for that important transportation information for the next couple of weeks, and I did not miss it.

The school district also probably wanted to avoid having to field 38 bajillion phone calls from parents asking about bus information, although I bet they still got many, many phone calls in the intervening weeks, because no matter how many ways one communicates, and no matter how many times one communicates, there are always those who don't get the message, for whatever reason.

But it just struck me as comical that the school district felt the need to do that. Why not include the information in each of the communications? Why build our anticipation so? I wonder how many more times this school year this same sequence of events will occur regarding important information.

(non) Menu plan for the week of September 5

I did a thing the other day. I canned potatoes for the first time. See, we needed potatoes, and the 10 lb bag was just a couple of pennies more than a 5 lb bag, so I bought the 10 lb bag, even though a week or two prior to that, I had composted three moldy, smelly*, and oddly juicy rotten potatoes.

It was quite the internal debate, in the store. Should I buy the 5 lb bag, which we are much more likely to use before they go bad? Or should I get double the potatoes for about the same price, knowing it would be much more challenging to use them up?

Well, in the heat of the moment I chose double the potatoes. And after I cooled down, I realized that with only one potato-eater currently in the house, there is no way I would use them all. Of course I berated myself mentally, because that's how I roll. I mean, by purchasing the 10 lb bag, I was virtually guaranteeing that I was going to be throwing away potatoes in a month or so.

When I told Bubby I didn't think we'd be able to use the potatoes, he told me that sure we could. He still remembers the week that he and his brother ate mashed potatoes every. single. day. with fondness‡. He didn't seem too enthusiastic when I told him he was welcome to try†.

So I decided to can the potatoes. Our most frequent preparation of potatoes is mashed, and by canning potatoes, I'll be able to get mashed potatoes on the table in about 5 minutes. Based on the instructions in the Ball Blue Book of Canning, I expected to be able to get 2 quarts, that I thought I could probably stretch to 3, which didn't seem worthwhile canning, but I was committed. I ended up with 5 quarts, which for me is a full (pressure) canner load, plus enough extra for a Bubby** sized serving on Saturday. So yay! I'm looking forward five easy-peasy mashed potato preps, and zero rotten potatoes.

Also last week, I canned salsa (it's super hot this year), zucchini "pineapple", green beans***, and pinto beans. I think I'm done for now, but I do have some tomatoes in the freezer that I will eventually have to do something with.

The menu plan is a mess this week. School started, and I am exhausted. So we'll probably have breakfast for supper this week, along with fending for ourselves a couple of times, plus pizza, maybe hot dogs, possibly tacos or nachos. I don't know. I feel like this is awfully early in the "new year" to stop caring about what I'm going to feed my family.

What's cooking at your house this week? I could use some ideas.

* * * * *

*I honestly thought I was smelling unshowered teenager whenever I caught a whiff. Which was so weird, because sometimes there were no teenagers around, showered or otherwise.

‡I do not.

†Bubby generally does peel and cut the potatoes when we have mashed potatoes, but the last time he did the actual mashing there was an incident with the salt shaker, and he's been reluctant, since then, to mash the potatoes himself.

**A Bubby sized serving is equivalent to 3-4 normal person servings.

***I know. I said I wasn't going to can green beans anymore. But they just keep coming, friends. And I had to do something with them. And we already have 4 family sized portions in the freezer.

New sheets day

Monday is new sheets day in our house, and since the kids would not _ever_ change their sheets of their own volition, on Mondays I write "change sheets" on their list of chores on our mud room white board. And Bubby generally ignores my instruction to change sheets.

I have noticed that my kids' most effective strategy for getting out of doing something is simply not doing it right away. My brain is generally on top of things enough to tell them to do something once, but they count on me forgetting, and not telling them again, at least not consistently. And I usually do. Forget. And I usually don't. Tell them again.

So several months ago, I started taking Bubby's sheets off his bed on new sheet day. This way, if he wants to sleep, and does not want to sleep on the floor or in his hammock, he will need to put new sheets on before he goes to bed. It's been a highly effective technique--Bubby hasn't missed a clean sheet day since I implemented it.

The other day, he happened to catch me taking his sheets off, and he told me, you know mom, taking the sheets off is the easy part. It's not really all that helpful for you to take them off.

I know, sweet child, I know I'm not being helpful. I'm not intending to be helpful, although it is darling that you think that. I am intending to get you to actually change your sheets once in a while.

Oh, he said.

I've got strategies, too.

Menu plan for the week of August 29

It's football season, friends, which means Bubby needs to get picked up from practice most days right during the time I need to be making supper. It shouldn't be an issue, because generally there is at least one adult at home who could help with supper, while another adult picks up the kiddo, but it does require planning (and prepping) ahead on my part. The other days, he has games, which means there generally aren't any adults at home and we get home late (hence the two fends for yourselves this week).

Here's what's on the menu this week:

Supper:

Sausage* and egg <a href="https://littlespoonfarm.com/sourdough-english-muffins-recipe/"
