LMTA Ensemble

I wonder how many of you are interested in the ensemble participation. This year, Lubbock will not have an official group, but Abilene asked Lubbock students to come and be with them. The students would work on their songs here and then go there or some other location to practice together. Both Abilene and Lubbock would benefit. The song for the older group is Inspector Gadget and the younger groups have Mission Impossible and Jalpeno Hop. That is 3 age groups instead of the usual 2 that Lubbock normally has offered. Below is some information for you:

After this year's convention, Sherry Frush, ensemble chair for Abilene MTA, contacted me about the possibility of our students joining with the Abilene groups for next year. She said their numbers have been smaller the past few years as well, and they would welcome our students. They already have music approved and a director for each group (elementary, junior high and high school). There will be logistics to work out to minimize travel for Lubbock students.

I have copied the information from Abilene MTA below. If you have students who would like to participate in the TMTA Convention ensemble for 2019, contact Sherry Frush as soon as possible to let her know you are interested. Here is her email address: sherryfrush@yahoo.com

Although AMTA's registration deadline is not until February, please contact her soon (ideally by mid-October) so that she can put you in contact with the director of the group who can let you know which part students should learn (secondo or primo) and so AMTA will know the level of participation to expect from Lubbock.

There is a contract for students to sign and details that may be different from LMTA ensemble guidelines. Sherry included a draft of AMTA's contract below so that you can share the general information with your students/parents. The new contract/agreement details for 2019 will be sent to teachers closer to the registration deadline in February.

Great Parents!

As with any generalization, there are exceptions to such a bold statement, but make no mistake… very few great pianists would be great without the support and guidance of great parents.

My Parents Called the Shots ( Mine did too)

My parents did not force me into taking piano lessons. However, once I had expressed interest and signed up, quitting piano lessons part-way through the year was not an option. And thank goodness it wasn’t! Because let’s be honest, kids are “right here, right now” kind of creatures and need the guidance of parents to keep them motivated… even if it means missing a play date, a trip to the beach, or a birthday party because of piano lessons.

At every year’s end, my parents always made the decision to re-register me in piano lessons based on their observations of my personal enjoyment. They did not ask me straight out “Do you want to take piano lessons again next year?” because depending on my mood, the weather, or whether or not I liked what we were having dinner, my answer could vary.(Amen to that one. Being a temperamental type, that would never have worked on me.)

So they made the decision, knowing that I was progressing as a pianist, I enjoyed playing piano most of the time, and I was reaping the academic and social benefits of piano lessons.

My Parents Made Piano Lessons a Priority

Knowing that we had made a commitment, piano lessons became as important as eating, sleeping, and brushing your teeth. Piano lessons and recitals were not to be missed. My parents knew that asking me to commit to piano lessons, meant that they had to make a commitment to making every lesson no matter how busy life would get… and trust me, it got busy.

My Parents Were Practice Partners

My piano was in the living room. And if my mom was not on the bench beside me she was certainly not far off. (mine  was in the kitchen).She knew exactly what piece I was supposed to be working on, she knew what measures were tripping me up, and most importantly, she knew that I loved playing for her. Rather than saying, “Did you practice for 15 minutes?”, my mom would say, “Your crescendo in the fourth measure was beautiful!” And it wasn’t just my mom who was involved. Even though my dad was not a piano player, he was always eager to witness a mini-concert from the couch and attended every single recital without fail.  I knew without a doubt that my involvement in the piano was something both of my parents valued. (My daddy got a kick out of me playing for family that visited. I didn't like that, but now I can relate to his desire.

​I’m going to finish this post of with an analogy.

There are 3 pieces to a piano student pie; the piano student, the piano teacher, and the piano parents. If any one of these three pieces is missing the student will fail and the investment wasted.

Just in case you have forgotten, please return the student information sheet at your next lesson.  Student Affiliate dues are needing your approval too.  If you plan to play in any city recital sponsored by LMTA or take the theory test, then student affiliate is for you.  I strongly encourage everyone who can to take the theory test.  There are a few of my students that I consider good examples of what happens to their learning because of preparing for the test.   Sometimes a student comes to lessons and sits quietly, acting as though they are listening to what I say, however, when the information must be applied, it doesn't show any understanding.  Theory study helps in many ways.

I know some who are planning to continue as Student Affiliate members, but if you haven't done it before, I need to know pretty soon.

START THE NEW PIANO YEAR WITH PROMISE

A new school year starts in just a few days. It gives me a feeling much like I get when January 1st rolls in to the calendar. There are new plans, new promises, new programs, new pieces, and new people to meet. Those New Year's resolutions we make in January may have gone by the wayside, but here we are in August with a chance to begin again.

Many of you had a chance for rest this summer by taking vacations and having new experiences. Even though, there were days off schedule, I hope you listened to music and played the piano too. I will see you beginning the week of August 20th. I have been making plans that a directly related to you. Very few students learn exactly the same way. Think of the accomplishments you made last year and also the plans you have for this year. Communication with you is an important part of customizing your lessons. Keep me informed about what is going on with your practice and challenge yourself to practice your music with a purpose. The calendar for this school year and it's piano activities will be given at your first lesson. All student affiliate fees are due by September 3rd. The calendar will have those activities marked with an *.

I appreciate all of you who have determined that music lessons are activities you want to include in your education. There are so many benefits that are being realized.

Spring Recital information

Our Spring Recital will be held on Saturday, May 19th at 1:00 p.m. at Redbud Baptist Church. I am not able to attach the program order to this post. There will be two parts to the recital, however, you are welcome to stay for the entire program if possible. If you want a copy of the program, let me know by email and I will send to you directly.
I also would like to remind you to return your summer and fall information letters to me by May 18th.
After the recital we will have a reception on the west side of the church building. I will furnish punch and would appreciate your contributions for other food items. Please let me know if you plan to help.
See you Saturday a few minutes early for pictures before the recital begins.

Spring Festival Coming up April 14, 2018

Spring Break is in its last few hours.  That is sad.  That means no more play time till school is out.  I DO have theory test back and most will be happy.  Our next event is April 14th. Many are working on songs for the Spring Festival  It always surprises me when students and parents tell me on the day before that they have an out-of-town trip planned on the same day as the festival.  

I discovered over this break that I must be in a minority or people who keep a schedule and a list.  Without those, I am totally lost.  

I would appreciate it if all of you who read this would make sure the correct music and books get to lessons this week.  It is hard to prepare when we have to search for books and materials. I am feeling much more "normal", so my posts will occur more often.

Don't feel hopeless this week.  Prepare to succeed.

Very Important Dates and Deadlines

This is a very important post.  We have 3 major events that happen as soon as we get back to lessons.

1.  Sonatina contest and festival   The deadline is January 2nd.   I have 15  on the list to participate and I need to know from every one of you that you are confirming your participation.  The actual date of the event is February 17.

2. Celebration Expo/Hymn Festival  ----deadline is January 5th and the event happens January 27th.I currently have 20 on the list to participate.  I also need confirmation on that.

3. The Whitlock Theory test  deadline is January 12 and the test is February 10th. I do not know who is taking this test.  I must know the names.

Please respond quickly.

Parenting is Hard ---So is Practicing

Parenting is hard

Piano Parenting doesn’t make things easier.
When it comes to piano practicing, a good piano parent is prepared when their piano kid puts up an argument. The next time your piano kid tries to get out of piano practice, give these offensive maneuvers a try.

State the Facts

Because you’ve listened to past episodes, you know that it’s best to schedule piano practice ahead of time. When practice time rolls around, simply tell your piano kid, “It’s time to practice.” There is no need for argument, no need to negotiate. Expect them to push back and try to get you to wait until later. Don’t fall for it. You know that “later” will only bring more complaints and stalling. Do the practicing now and enjoy other activities later.

Don’t Overreact to Their Overreaction

When your piano kid overreacts to the practicing statement above, keep your own emotions in check. Don’t let yourself respond with more arguing or complaining. Someone has to be the grownup, right? As the parent, that responsibility falls squarely on your shoulder. Don’t be surprised by their reaction but don’t let it throw you off track either.

Give Them Ownership

Rather than asking, “Do you want to practice now?” (Because you know the answer will be no.) Ask, “Which do you want to play first, this piece or that piece?” Your objective remains the same in both scenarios: to get your piano kid to the piano to practice their assignment. By approaching them with the this or that question, you are giving your piano kid a voice. They don’t get to decide if they will practice but they can decide what they will practice first.
Be aware of what works best for your child. Some children need lots of guidance and direction when they practice. Other children prefer to be left alone to practice and make mistakes in privacy. Very young children will certainly need your assistance to help them know how to practice their assignment.

Plan for November and December

The first theory test is over and in the process of being shipped to the graders.  We will have a pretty long wait for scores, but hopefully they will be worth the wait. 

 

Now for the next few weeks:   prepare for December 9th recital, decide if you are participating in the Sonatina contest/festival in February and  also decide on the songs for Celebration Expo.  There is always something to do, but the first theory test is O V E R!

Theory information for November 11th

On Saturday, November 11, the theory will take place.  You should know if you are taking it.  It is a big deal!! I hope you realize it is important.  Students need to enter from the East/Day Care Parking lot (12th & York)  This is going to given at Agape Methodist church.  

The schedule is:

Grades 9-12    8:30-11:30

Grade 2,7,8      9-11

Grades 4,5,6     9:30-11:30

Grades 1 and 3   10-11

Please bring pencils with erasers and something hard to write on.  Some did not finish the practice tests last week.  I will get through everything as quickly as I can. Please study.

If there are questions, let me know.  Dress comfortably.

Halloween Interruptions and Theory preparation

  I hope the Fall festivals and Halloween parties have been part of your weekend, but if you happen to be a Tuesday student and wonder if there are lessons, the answer is yes.  We have only 30 minutes of your evening tied up with piano.  I will have the usual evening and my light will not be on, in order to discourage visitors who might disturb us.  

If you have considered the ensemble, let me know by Tuesday. 

 Also, we have less than 2 weeks before the theory test.  There were actually students last week who brought no tests or books that had been prepared.  Don't let that happen.  Studying is important for success.

Preparation: the Key to Success

Do you know the song with lyrics that say "there's a change in the weather, and very soon, there will be a change in me?" Sometimes the weather makes us react in positive ways. I love cooler weather. It makes me feel excited about the upcoming holidays.
Last week, I entered the 19 names of students taking the theory test on November 11. I have sent the link for parent to print practice tests. I have encouraged students to do computer practice and their theory assignments. Many are learning material they have never experienced. New things present challenges. 30 minutes weekly cannot fix everything. I need everyone to do their part.
Maybe you are not taking the test. Are you preparing your recital song? Preparation is a part of every day. Don't forget piano practice.

2. scroll down to theory in left column
3. go to Reference materials
4. find Practice tests with 2015 edition syllabus
5. sample tests can be printed on your level and some worksheets.
If you have trouble I will help. This site is confusing to many, including me.

Please Come Prepared

Last week I wrote nothing because I felt like I was being a tattle tail.  Today, I don't feel that way.  Many of you who have students taking piano, have not taken lessons yourself and you are not always sure if you can help. Believe me! You can help. There are many of your children who are not doing their assignment that have been given.  The old excuse of "no time" isn't  popular with me at all.  Some of the busiest students also practice the most.  The computer assignments are supposed to help get ready for the theory test and also prepare better music readers.  Lately, the work for many has been careless and embarrassing.  

Parents, if you do not know what your student is supposed to do, look in the assignment book. Also, a minimum of 15 minutes of practice is necessary for little ones and that grows with the student's age and level.  It does not work well to practice only one time for an extended period.  If you have questions, ask me.  Progress doesn't happen without practice on any activity.

The theory test deadline is the 13th.  Who is going to take the November 11 test?

Yea Fall is Here!

Fall is in the air and rain is too.  I love days like this and the calmness it provides.  Actually, it makes me sleepy, so  I am giving everyone an assignment:  what song would you like to learn for the December 9th recital?  It can be Christmas or something else.  Please come with a good idea this week.  

Here is an opportunity for an extra star on the chart: One star for  3 songs with a color in the title.

I hope you are still not trying to come up with excuses not to practice.

Computer Reminder

I have been checking the computer work that students do each week. I am proud of the determination and success shown by even the very young ones. There are always a few who think these assignments do not pertain to them. Much of the theory practice happens on the music learning community pages. If you haven't noticed your child doing their computer work, please remind them.

The daylight hours are getting shorter, and we have the first day of fall this week. For those who have late evening lessons, this will be challenging. Hang tough. It can be done. Keep working hard and you will see the results at the recitals.

Student Affiliate Reminder

The Student Affiliate fees are due this weekend.  I only need to be sure who is doing Student Affiliate activities. You do not have to pay this to me until October. Please don't assume that I know your thoughts.  I need a response. The fees go up each month and are considered late fees by the state.  I do not like paying extra for these.  They are $11 this year.  These allow for the theory tests, All boys recital, Duet/ensemble programs, Wee folk recital, and Jazz pop and rock recital.   

I hope no one forgets their music this week.  Are you playing your songs enough for them to sound Good?  I am anxious to hear you.

I will be posting some practice tips later this week.

Full Speed Ahead for a New Year

For more years than I can say, I have had an anxious feeling on the night before the new school year. Things have changed in my life, I do not have new clothes, new shoes, stacks of paper, pens, and notebooks. I have not been to prepare bulletin boards for my classroom and attended countless meetings that I still question as being relevant, but some things remain the same. I will probably lie awake tonight in anticipation of what the year will bring. Kids are still open books, ready for the pages of their minds to be filled.
Lots of planning has gone into preparation for this school year. Keep the goals for yourself in mind and together we can see so much success. Students are going to be in all kinds of classes, at home, in private and public schools. Time goes by much too quickly for us to waste time.

See you this week and don't forget to bring everything I asked you to bring. It will be a fun day (and a little tiring).
