Court Strikes Blow To Illinois Eavesdropping Law

CHICAGO — In a blow to Illinois' sweeping eavesdropping law, a federal appeals court on Tuesday blocked its enforcement in cases where someone is recording a police officer at work.

In 1961a law was created, that makes it a felony for someone to produce an audio recording of a conversation without the person’s permission. If a person is caught recording someone they could serve up to 15 years in prison specially if you record someone in law enforcement without their permission.

Chicago's chief legal officer told the public that the police did not intend to enforce the law during the May 20-21 summit. The thing is the Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez has not verified the the public that the police will practice what they told the public. This law will violate the American people’s the First Amendment's free speech and free-press rights.

People we really need to stand together on this. If the American people do not stand together and fight against these type of laws, then you might has well label us government slaves. The only way to fight against the things the government are doing is to stand together. It is protesting, it is calling, it is yelling, it is make your voices be heard. That will get the government listen, because we the People will make our voices heard.

The world is changing right before our eyes. We have lost our rights in The United States. The government was made to represent us, instead it is working against us. People voted for Obama for a change. Has the government truly changed. Yes it has but it has not changed in the matter of good. It has not changed to stick up for the American rights. The constitution doesn’t mean jack shit anymore. In fact is their anything in that document that has not been changed to benefit the government. Perhaps we are turning into Orwell's book 1984. The radio announcer Alex Jones has been broadcasting that the death of Osama Bin Laden is not true. Alex believes that Osama Bin Laden is dead, but he is saying that the president has lied about the death of the Al-Qaida Leader. Has Alex Jones gone too far?

Now my personal opinion is that Alex Jones is stretching to deface the president of the United States. I do listen to Alex Jones a lot. I subscribe to his podcast from iTunes. There is a lot of things he says that make sense, but this I just don’t believe. I believe that the president has told the truth on Osama Bin laden. I believe the story on how it happen. Seriously do you think that Pakistan would be acting and saying the things they have said about Osama’s Death if it didn’t happen?

Afghan and Arab sources cited by the Post said they believe for the first time that Taliban representatives are fully authorized to speak for the Quetta Shura, the Afghan Taliban organization based in Pakistan, and its leader, Mohammad Omar, according to the newspaper. The sources requested anonymity to discuss the development.

Omar's representatives have shunned negotiations in the past, insisting that all foreign troops withdraw first. However, the Post reported that its sources said the Quetta Shura has begun to talk about a comprehensive agreement that would include participation of some Taliban figures in the government and the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops

GUATEMALA CITY — Guatemalans on Saturday slammed a US confession that it led a 1940s study in the Central American country in which hundreds of people were deliberately infected with sexually transmitted diseases.

"No matter how much of a superpower it is, the United States cannot do this kind of experimentation," Nery Rodenas, the chief of the human rights office at the archbishop of Guatemala's office, told reporters.

"They used Guatemalans as lab rats. It is important that family members receive some kind of compensation."

Lawmaker Zury Rios also urged compensation for not only the victims, but the nation as a whole.

"It is just not enough to say you are sorry. We need to be compensated as a (sovereign) State, maybe with the funding of a solid sex and reproductive health program," she insisted.

In a phone conversation with President Alvaro Colom on Friday, US President Barack Obama expressed his deep regret for the experiment conducted by US public health researchers in Guatemala between 1946 and 1948, and apologized "to all those affected."

VANCOUVER, Wash. — A 28-year-old Vancouver, Wash., woman who had acid thrown in her face has undergone surgery at a Portland hospital.

Legacy Emanuel Medical Center spokeswoman Amber Shoebridge said Wednesday night that Bethany Storro's surgery went well and she was resting.

Bethany Storro, of Vancouver, Wash., was getting something out of her car in downtown Vancouver when the attack happened Monday evening, her mother Nancy Neuwelt told The Oregonian.

Neuwelt said a young woman walked up to her daughter, said: "Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?" and tossed a cup of liquid in Storro's face.

Where has the humanity gone? When did we stop being human? When did we turn into savages? Why must people treat others this way? How do we break the chain of hatred and violence?

Judge's ruling sets back stem cell research

Talk about judicial activism. U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth just ruled that the federal government can't fund any stem cell research because it destroys embryos. He voided not just President Obama's stem cell policy, but former President George W. Bush's policy, too.

Lamberth relied on a reading of the Dickey-Wicker Amendment, which forbids federal funding of "research in which a human embryo or embryos are destroyed." The anti-abortion community is ecstatic, but the ruling goes far further than even Bush's policies on stem cells. Bush approved federal funding of research on stem cell lines that existed by August 2001. It's unlikely that even this policy would be allowed under Lamberth's reasoning.

The Obama administration is already planning an appeal, as it should. Congress could, and should, easily clarify things by simply passing a stem cell funding bill. That would eliminate the need to go through the courts, and the bill would be unlikely to encounter a presidential veto this time around.

In the meantime, the scientific community is frustrated and confused. The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine will be able to press on with its embryonic stem cell research, thanks to the wisdom of California's voters. But it means the institute's scientists won't be able to collaborate with those whose funding was dependent on federal grants.

Congress should move quickly to ensure that this potentially valuable research can continue.

I am totally against this judge. I believe in stem cell research. There are so many illnesses out there that would benefit from such a practice. I am a person with Multiple Sclerosis I would benefit from this kind of research. I do not think it is fair that people can put a halt on such of an important matter. I do not think it is fair to have the ability to use stem cell research and people have the right to take that away. What gives people the right to interfere with such an important issue.

Are these people so selfish? It seem so to me. I think those who are against stem cell research obviously has never had an illness or a disease that could be cured by such a technique. I do hope as time passes by we will be able to perform stem cell research, and cure so many diseases that haunt the world today.

One soldier allegedly formed a 'kill team' for random executions

SEATTLE — Five soldiers accused of killing civilians in Afghanistan are now facing additional charges of conspiracy to commit premeditated murder — a plot that allegedly began when one soldier discussed how easy it would be to "toss a grenade" at Afghan civilians, The Seattle Times reported Wednesday.

The five soldiers were charged with murder in June for the deaths of three Afghan civilians in Kandahar Province this year. According to charging summaries newly released by the Army, additional allegations of conspiracy have since been filed against those soldiers, and seven others have been charged in connection with the conspiracy or with attempting to cover it up.

The new charges arose from the investigations into the killings and into a brutal assault on an enlisted man who had informed on soldiers smoking hashish, The Times reported. The informant reported hearing soldiers talk about killing civilians.

The Army told The Associated Press Wednesday that it is redacting charging documents that detail the new allegations and expects to release them next week.

As part of the widening probe, investigators have interviewed platoon mates and defendants, The Times reported, citing documents that defense attorneys filed with an Army magistrate judge, as well as interviews with defense attorneys. Two of the defense lawyers did not immediately respond to e-mails from the AP on Wednesday.

Some platoon members told investigators that Army Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs began joking with other soldiers last December about how easy it would be to "toss a grenade" at Afghan civilians and kill them, the newspaper said. One soldier responded that it was a stupid idea, and another believed Gibbs was "feeling out the platoon."

But eventually, Gibbs formed what one called a "kill team" to randomly execute Afghan civilians while on patrol, the documents said. No motive was discussed.

Gibbs has denied any involvement in the killings.

All of the three who were killed were shot. Two were also hit with grenades in what has proved to be one of the most serious war-crimes cases to emerge from the Afghan war.

Anyone who dared to report the events was threatened with violence, investigators were told.

Gibbs, 25, of Billings, Montana, and Spc. Jeremy Morlock, 22, of Wasilla, Alaska, were charged in June with three counts each of premeditated murder and one count of assault, and they have emerged as central figures in the case.

Morlock has made extensive statements to investigators — statements that his attorney, Michael Waddington, said he hopes to have suppressed because they were made under the influence of prescription drugs taken for head injuries sustained in battle.

"Our position is that his statements were incoherent, and taken while he was under a cocktail of drugs that shouldn't have been mixed," Waddington said. "What he said is not consistent with other evidence that comes out of the case."

Three other soldiers were charged in June with one count of premeditated murder: Pvt. 1st Class Andrew Holmes, 19, of Boise, Idaho; Spc. Michael Wagnon II, 29, of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Spc. Adam Winfield, 21, of Cape Coral, Florida.

All five are awaiting court martial and could face life in prison or death if convicted. They are assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.

The three civilians killed near the Army's Forward Operating Base Ramrod in southern Afghanistan were identified as Gul Mudin, killed in January; Marach Agha, killed Feb. 22; and Mullah Adahdad, killed May 2.

There is really something wrong with the children of today. I think it has a lot to do with how they are raised. Parents are too busy with work, to really sit down and listen to their children. Parents now a days do not even punish their children anymore, because they are afraid of getting into trouble or arrested. I do believe in spanking. ATHENS: Two women, one of them pregnant, and a man died choking on smoke when Greeks protesting against government austerity measures threw petrol bombs into a bank here yesterday.

Tens of thousands of striking workers and civil servants took to the streets of the city centre here while masked youths clashed with police in riot gear, who responded with tear gas and flash bombs.

Police said the three Marfin bank employees, aged between 30 and 40 years, died after protesters broke the windows of the building and tossed in Molotov cocktails. Outside the bank, firemen restrained a distraught elderly woman, who wept "My child, my child".

Prime Minister George Papandreou expressed shock at the deaths and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.

"We are deeply shocked by the unjust death of these three people, our fellow citizens," he told parliament.

Hundreds of black-hooded anarchists roamed the streets, smashing store windows and hacking chunks of marble off buildings to throw at police. Although they were behind the worst of the violence, other protesters joined them in pelting police with bottles.

I believe in protesting. I believe in standing up for what is right. I believe in doing what ever is necessary to gain your governments attention except when it cost the lives of innocent people. I know I will probably get a lot of flack from what I am posting now but I have to agree with this law being unconstitutional. I think it is wrong to tell someone they can not dress a certain way. I do think if they are in trouble with the law and need to be identified in some way because of an illegal action. they Should be able to take the woman aside and ask to revile her face. Then I believe that the woman should show what she looks like. Those are the only circumstances should the law be able to force a woman to revile her face.

More than 100 people turned out in Mill Creek Park on Sunday to protest a new law in Arizona to crack down on illegal immigrants.

“No Juan Crow” was among the messages on signs that attracted honks from passing motorists on the Country Club Plaza.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, signed a law Friday that requires police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal immigrants.

Critics say that it will lead to civil rights abuses.

“It’s the beginning of a police state,” said Gil Guerrero, who works for the Guadalupe Centers in Kansas City. “It’s like the South Africa ‘pass laws,’ where you had to have ID at all times. We don’t study history. This is what happened in Nazi Germany with the Jews.”

Supporters of the law say that Arizona, which has an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants, has waited long enough for the federal government to do something and that critics are overreacting.

Jude Huntz, director of human rights for the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, was among those protesting on the Plaza.

“Our concern is that Missouri is going to wind up the same way because we already have harsh anti-immigration laws here in Missouri with our state legislature,” Huntz said.

That is right America this is what we need to do to oppose this law. We all need to stand up together and show the world we are against this. We need a national protest. We all need to stand together on this. We need to arrange some kind of major get together just to be heard.

Hours after Obama denounced the measure as "misguided," Brewer held a signing ceremony for the bill, which makes it a crime to be in the state illegally and requires police to check suspects for immigration paperwork.
Obama signaled that a legal showdown might be possible and that his administration would "examine the civil rights and other implications" of the law. Department of Justice officials said they "were reviewing the bill" but declined to discuss the legislation further. Immigrant rights groups have vowed a court fight, arguing that regulating immigration is a federal matter.
Brewer, at an afternoon news conference in Phoenix, cast the law in terms of public safety, saying, "We cannot sacrifice our safety to the murderous greed of drug cartels." Brewer said she would order the state police training agency to form guidelines to train officers and protect against racial profiling.
Brewer spent as much time during her remarks talking about diversity and the need to avoid racial profiling as she did about fighting crime and protecting Arizona from illegal immigration. "People across America are watching Arizona, seeing how we implement this law, ready to jump on the slightest misstep," she said.

Damn right people are upset about this new law. I am one of those people who think this law is a huge mistake. I believe by accepting such a law it will turn America backwards. This law can not be enforced with out some type of racial profiling. If a person speaks Spanish are the cops going to ask for their green cards? What about if they are Muslim and they wear different clothing because of their beliefs. Will the Cops pull them aside and say “Hey show me your green card” This law upsets me so much I am shaking. It is absolutely terrible. God forbid if you are not white, or if you have a different skin tone then those around you. This law is sickening. It is wrong, and it is unconstitutional. The only way this law will be enforced is by racial profiling when the governor said she doesn’t permit it, how the hell does she think this law is going to be pulled off? How many rights will be destroyed? This is like a stone being thrown in a pond it creates ripples. The ripples start off small then if you notice they get bigger and bigger that will happen in the United States because of the law. Are the American people really ready for all the problems this law will open up? I am not in fact it scares me.

Promiscuous women are responsible for earthquakes, a senior Iranian cleric has said.

Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi told worshippers in Tehran last Friday that they had to stick to strict codes of modesty to protect themselves.

"Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes," he said.

Tens of thousands of people have died in Iran earthquakes in the last decade.

Mr Sedighi was delivering a sermon on the need for a "general repentance" by Iranians.

"What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble? There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes," he said.

Ok folks I am writing about this because this is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Earthquakes caused by women !!! Oh My God. I hope people realize how false this is. This just shows how backward the Iranian Cleric really is.

Washington (CNN) -- The Pentagon and U.S. Central Command are updating military plans to strike Iran's nuclear sites, preparing up-to-date options for the president in the event he decides to take such action, an Obama administration official told CNN Sunday.

The effort has been underway for several weeks and comes as there is growing concern across the administration's national security team that the president needs fresh options ready for his approval if he were to decide on a military strike, according to the official who is familiar with the effort.

I am reading this and wondering how much is this true? Could it be a plan to scare Iran into submission over the nuclear area’s? We can not afford to go to war. The people of the United States do not want our military to take such an action. The reason why is if the United States does take the military route of bombing Iran, it would be I believe the opening to WWIII. My gut feeling is if we do a military strike against Iran all Islamic nations would be against us. It is a very scary thought. We can not even afford to be in another war. We are just getting our soldiers back from Iraq. I believe the United States military has been spread out amongst the world that we do not have enough military strength to back up these threats that the pentagon is talking about. The world can sure tell when a government doesn’t care for its people. This country rather kill their people then try to reason with them. It is sad that countries never seem to keep history in mind. All this government of Thailand is telling the world that it is scared of it own people. Instead of reasoning with the people they prefer to kill and punish them when the people of Thailand try to show their government their thoughts and feelings. It just shows that the government loves it power instead of their people. I am glad the united states is not like that. In the united States we might have to have certain papers designating where we can protest, but at least we can protest without having to worry about our military trying to kill us. The people of the United States do not have that fear. JIEGU, China - Hundreds of victims of an earthquake that struck western China more than 72 hours ago were cremated Saturday as necessity forced Tibetans to break with local burial traditions.

About 1,000 monks were on hand on a mountain beside Jiegu, the hardest-hit area by Wednesday's earthquake, to chant Buddhist prayers as the bodies were set on fire.

While the cremation took place, rescue workers searched through rubble in this remote western region in a bid to find any remaining survivors, with officials saying the death toll had climbed to 1,144.

I think it is sad that we hear about one crisis and the media doesn’t fully cover another crisis. I tend to believe that is unfair. We also have not heard about the United States sending people over to Tibet to help them out. We have helped other countries but what are we doing for Tibet to help them out? What can we do to help those who live in Tibet? I must research more about how we are helping them because I have not heard much about us helping those people. I do think they need help too. I only think it is fair.
