Whats HOT Wednesday: Craft Room Ideas

I have a craft room but its lacking in organization and cuteness. So I decided to do today's Whats Hot Wednesday on craft room so that I can get some good ideas for my space.

Yummy Lemon Bars

I recently made these lemon bars and my husband loved them! So I thought I would share them with you. I followed the recipe exactly and felt they could use a little less lemon juice.

Here is the recipe:

CRUST
1 1/2 C all purpose flour
1/3 C sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 tbsp lemon zest
1/2 C butter, room temp

FILLING
4 large eggs
1 1/3 C sugar
1 C lemon juice, freshley squeezed and strained ( I feel you could easily use 1/2 c to 3/4 c and be ok)

Preheat oven to 350F. Line 13x9 (or for thicker crust, use 9x9) pan with aluminum foil. In a large bowl, whisk toghether flour, sugar, salt and lemon zest. Cut butter into chunks and add to flour mixture. Blend it with an electric mixer at low speed until mixture forms coarse, sandy crumbs. Pour into pan and press mixture down into an even layer.

Bake for 16-19 Minutes, until just lightly browned around the edges.

While crust is baking, make filling. Whisk together all filling ingredients in a large bowl. When the crust comes out of the oven and is still hot, pour in filling mixtture. Bake for about 20 Minutes, or until filling is set and does not jiggle when the pan is gently shaken.
Cool completely before slicing. Top slices with powdered sugar and serve.

Fabric Button Cover RIngs

So a while ago I posted how to make these cute rings over on Sweet Peas and Bumblebees blog. If you visited there blog and saw it you noticed my pictures were horrible. Well I took some better pictures of the finished product and now it's time to post it here.

I came up with this idea for my daughters birthday party. She is going to have a pirate party so I thought it would be so fun to do these rings as part of there goody bag.

Items Needed For Project:
Fabric with a small design
7/8 inch craft cover button kit
Ring with pad
Industrial strength adhesive like E-6000
Mod Podge (optional)

First you are going to lay your fabric out and take the clear template and trace the outside of it onto your fabric. The inside circle is what will show on the ring.

Now cut it out and stick the fabric over the mold with wrong side up. Now push your button shell into the mold.

Next fold all of your left over fabric down and put a back over it. Take the pusher tool and push the back down until it snaps into place.

Now remove the button cover from the mold. This is where you need to decide if you want Mod Podge on it. I used Mod Podge on mine because I wanted it a little shiny. After the Mod Podge is dry take your E-6000 and drop a little on the pad of the ring. Stick the button cover on and let dry for at least 12 hours.

I also decided to make a few hair pins that match. They turned out super cute.

Now go make some for you and your little girlie.

I have been reading a ton lately so I thought I would share some of my favorite books I've read this summer.

Matched by Ally Condie is amazing! The sequel Crossed is coming this fall and I can't wait!

The Mortal Instruments Series has four books out right now. I have read the first three

and they are awesome.

City of Fallen Angels is the newest one out and I haven't had a chance to read it yet but I can't wait until

I have some spear time.

The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead is a must read! If you liked twilight you'll LOVE

Vampire Academy! It has 6 books in the series and you won't want it to end.

Those are my top three picks that I have read this summer. If you are looking for a good read you won't be disappointed in these books. Enjoy!

Red Pepper Pasta

This is one of my very favorite dishes. It is full of veggies but then you add a little Italian Sausage and it makes it "manly" enough for your hubby to eat.

Items Needed:
1 box bow tie pasta
1 package Italian Sausage
1 red bell pepper
1 squash
1 zuchinni
1/2 onion
Marinara (I just use 1 jar Prego, don't judge)
Garlic
Mozzarella Cheese

Cook pasta as recommended. While pasta is boiling cook your sausage. Once your sausage is fully cooked remove from skillet and sautee all your veggies and garlic in a little olive oil. When veggies are done add your sauce and sausage back in the skillet. Heat until warm. When pasta is done mix pasta and sauce together in a 9x13 pan and top with mozzarella cheese. Heat until cheese is melted. Remove from oven and enjoy!

I am thrilled to be unveiling my latest sewing project here at Curds and Whey! I love Holly’s blog and am constantly checking out her latest projects. I’m seriously loving her onesie and matching headband tutorial…adorable!!

A little bit about me…

I’m Briana from the blog Sweet Peas & Bumblebees. My twin sister and I LOVE to blog about all things crafty and thoroughly enjoy spending our time creating and trying new recipes! We even have a linky party on Wednesdays where you can show off your best recipes and latest craftiness! We totally love seeing everything you all come up with and would love if you would join us!

Now for my tutorial…

Interchangeable Ruffled Headband

My daughter’s hair is finally getting long enough to do some fun hairdos with, but she also has those tiny little fly-aways that aren’t quite long enough to reach her ponytail. So, we’ve been utilizing a headband to help. But being the crafty momma I am, I had to jazz up the little elastic headbands we’ve been using! =)

I went looking for ideas on Pinterest (yes, I’m a Pinterest junkie) and found some super cute ideas from the Funky Polkadot Giraffe. Using her ideas for her ruffle headband and her ruffle bookmark I made my own version.

*** Before I begin, I just wanted to point out that I am a beginning sewer, so don’t shy away from this project because it involves a sewing machine. Seriously, if I can do it, you will definitely be able to too!! =) ***

You’ll need:

** Scraps of fabric

** Scraps of felt

** Sewing machine

** Elastic headband

** Seam ripper

**Glue gun

** Velcro

** Iron

Start out by cutting your fabric to size. My fabric strip was 12 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide.

Adjust your sewing machine to sew a long stitch with high tension. Then, sew directly down the middle of your fabric strip.

**Before you go any further, put your tension back to normal so you don’t forget when it comes time to sew again!**

Pull on the bottom thread of your stitch and your fabric will start to gather. Keep pulling and moving the ruffles across until they are evenly distributed. {I heart ruffles!!} Now, layer your ruffled fabric on top of your piece of felt cut to 2.5” x 5”.

You can either pin the felt to the wrong side of your fabric ruffle, or you can hold onto it as you go. I didn’t pin it because I wanted to adjust the ruffles as I went. Using the edge of your presser foot as a guide, sew all around the ruffle, making sure to keep the ruffle and the felt aligned if you didn’t pin it like me!

Seam ripper time! Carefully remove the stitch down the middle.

Now it’s time to turn your cute ruffle into a headband! Turn the ruffled piece over and cut another piece of felt to match the smaller rectangle you made stitching around the edges.

Using velcro (I found FabricFusion velcro that just irons on…love it!) attach a strip to the top of both pieces of felt.

Match your two velcroed felt pieces together. Now, take your headband and use it as a spacing guide. Glue the open end of your felt making sure to leave a small tunnel down the middle for your headband. Just be careful not to let your glue get too close to the middle or it will get on your headband.

After your hot glue is dry, you can open up your opposite (velcro) side. You now have a little tunnel perfect for your elastic headband.

I finally made my first project using a pattern that I haven't created. I still find it easier to just come up with it on my own but at least now I know I can follow other patterns. Taco Salad

I'm out of town so I've been slacking, but here is a delicious recipe for you guys. I love it. It is quick and easy so it is always one of my go to meals.

Items Needed:
1 lb cooked ground beef
1 8 oz can tomatoe sauce
1 can corn (drained)
1 can chili beans
1 package taco seasoning
Tortilla or Nacho cheese chips
Toppings of choice (lettuce, tomatoe, olives, onion)
Ranch

Add your cooked ground beef, tomatoe sauce, chili beans and taco seasoning together in skillet and stir together. Next add your can of corn. Heat until warm.

Now to make the salad. First crumble some chips on the bottom. Next add your meat mixture and top with cheese. Next add your lettuce and the other toppings of choice and top with ranch. Super easy right?

Cute onesie and head band

I made this cute onesie and head band for a baby shower that I went to. They turned out super cute! Click here for a tutorial on the onesie. I did a few things different. The flowers were put on the same way as the other onesies, I just added some ric-rack for stems (place the ric-rack underneath the flowers before ironing the flowers on, then sew the ric-rack to the onesie.) and some buttons for the middle of the flowers. A tutorial for the headband coming soon!

Fabric Flower

I wanted to post this before the 4th of July because I think it is the cutest little accessory to any little girl's red, white and blue outfit. I think it kind of looks like a firework.

You can also make this cute little wristlet with this same tutorial.

Aren't those the cutest little things?

Items Needed for Bow:
6 squares that are 3x3 inches
Felt
Thick thread like embroidering thread
Glue gun
Large jewel
Clip
Ribbon

Items Needed for Wristlet:
6 squares that are 2x2 inches
Felt
Embroidering thread
Glue gun
Small jewel
Ribbon

First take one square and fold it in half.

And then in half again.

Now turn your square to look like a diamond with the raw edges facing you.

Now pinch it together from both sides of the diamond.

Next thread it onto your thick thread.

Do that to all squares making sure you thread them in the same direction every time, with the front always facing you. Once you have them all on the thread you are going to start cutting the long tail off of them making sure not to cut to close to the thread.

Now push them all together and tie the ends of your thread together in a tight knot.

Next clip the thread short and get ready to glue. Start with the petals that are by the knot and add a little glue from the backside in between the petals. Go all the way around the flower with the glue and squeeze each petal together.

Now add a small circle of felt to the back side.

And add a jewel to the front side.

Now to turn it into a bow glue it to a clip or for the wristlet add it to some ribbon!

Now put it on your little one and have a great 4th!!!

Vintage Diner Birthday Cake

Last weekend I went to my Grandpa's 80th birthday party. We did a vintage diner theme. It turned out so cute. I forgot my camera at the party which was a bummer. However, I made the birthday cake and took a snap of it before I took it to the party. I colored white fondant with Wilton's Food Coloring Gel. You can get it at any craft store and most Walmarts. The circles were cut with various cookie cutters. Sorry there was no tutorial with it. I'm not a professional cake decorator but I think it turned out cute for my first cake.

I made these cute skirts for a friend the other day. I love these skirts. I have made several for my little girl. They are so girly and perfect for little girls to twirl in. I am trying to decide if I am going to sell the pattern for them or just do a tutorial, so for now you just get to see how cute they are.

Strawberry Freezer Jam

This months lesson for visiting teaching is on Strengthening Families through Temporal Self- Reliance. I decided to make some strawberry freezer jam for my girls for my handout. I grew up on this jam. I loved it then and I love it now. It is so delicious and easy.

Here's the recipe for it...

Items Needed:
1 2/3 cups strawberries (mashed or blended)
2/3 cup sugar
2 tbsp instant pectin

First start by throwing some strawberries in the blender until you have 1 2/3 cups. Mix your sugar and pectin together in a large mixing bowl. Next mix your blended strawberries in with the sugar and pectin stirring for three minutes.

Now ladle jam into clean freezer jars or containers and let stand for 30 minutes.

Your done!!!

If you want to give it as a gift you can make it cute by cutting a circle out of scrapbook paper the size of the lid. I cut mine 2.5 inches on my cricut cutter. Next take some mod podge and paint it onto the lid. Place your paper on top of the mod podge (I didn't add any mod podge on top of the paper because I didn't want it to bubble.) Now tie a ribbon around the ring.

If you want to give it for visiting teaching you can add a cute handout with it.

Monsters!

I was needing something cute to make for my boys. There are so many cute things to make for little girls but I have all boys and I was starting to feel like they were being left out. My boys LOVE monsters. They have an usborne book that is called "Thats not my monster" and that thing has been read to pieces. I have seen lots of crocheted monsters out there but since I don't crochet I thought I would sew a few.

Here is what you will need:
Some cute fabric
Felt to match
Thread to match

Next, cut out your monster and felt pieces for the face and ears. My monsters were wide up top and narrow at the bottom. You can use any shape you want your monsters to be.

Take your bottom piece and lay it so the right side is facing up. Next pin your ears pointing down to that bottom piece.

Place your top piece with ride side facing down on top of your bottom piece. Pin in place.

Sew all the way around with a 1/2 seam allowance, leaving a space open at the bottom for stuffing. Turn right side out.

Stuff your monster as full as you would like it. Stitch your opening closed. I don't have a picture for this next part but its easy so no biggie. Next hot glue your face pieces to your monsters and you are done. You could sew your face pieces on to your fabric before sewing it all together and it would be much sturdier that way but I wanted something super easy. Aren't they cute? My boys LOVE them. They have to sleep with them every night!

Yummy Chocolate Suprise Cookies

I love these cookies! There is just something about biting into one of these and getting a mouthful of ooey, gooey goodness! Plus they are super easy to make and its a great cookie to make with kids. Just put them to work unwraping all of those rollos.

Ingredients:
1 bag of rollos unwrapped
1 box of devils food cake mix
2 eggs
1/3 cup of oil
Mix the cake mix, oil, and eggs together with a wooden spoon until combined. Take a little bit of the cookie dough and place a rollo in the middle and roll the dough around the rollo. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake at 350 for 7-10 minutes and you are done!
