Datatypes is a data storage format that can contain a specific type or range of values. The kind of data that variables may hold in a programming language are called as data types.

There are three data types in C language. They are,

Primary Data Type

Enumeration Data Type

Derived Data Type

Character Data Type

Character data type allows a variable to store only one character.

Storage size of character data type is 1. We can store only one character using character data type.

“char” keyword is used to refer character data type.

Character data type is a special integer type designed for storing single characters. The integer value of a char corresponds to an ASCII character. E.g., a value of 65 corresponds to the letter A, 66 corresponds to B, 67 to C, and so on.

As in the table below, unsigned char permits values from 0 to 255, and signed char permits values from -128 to 127. The char type is signed by default on some computers, but unsigned on others. The sizes of the char types are as follows.

Integer Data Type

An integer is a whole number (a number without a fractional part). It can be positive or negative numbers like 1, -2, 3, etc., or zero. The sizes of the integer variables depend on the hardware and operating system of the computer.

Integer data type allows a variable to store numeric values.

“int” keyword is used to refer integer data type.

The storage size of int data type is 2 or 4 or 8 byte.

Float Data Type

Floating point data type consists of 2 types. They are,

double

Float data type allows a variable to store decimal values.

Storage size of float data type is 4. This also varies depend upon the processor in the CPU as “int” data type.

We can use up-to 6 digits after decimal using float data type.

For example, 10.456789 can be stored in a variable using float data type.

Double data type is also same as float data type which allows up-to 10 digits after decimal.

Void Data Type

The smallest individual elements or units in a program are called Tokens. C has the following tokens.

1. Identifiers:

Identifiers are the names that are given to various program elements such as variables, symbolic constants, and functions.

Rules for defining an Identifiers:

An identifier can only have alphanumeric characters (a-z , A-Z , 0-9) (i.e. letters & digits) and underscore( _ ) symbol.

Identifier names must be unique.

The first character must be an alphabet or underscore.

You cannot use a keyword as identifiers.

Only the first thirty-one (31) characters are significant.

Must not contain white spaces.

Identifiers are case-sensitive.

Example :

some legal identifiers:

float _number;

float a;

int this_is_a_very_detailed_name_for_an_identifier;

-This type of identifier you should use in your programming.

The following are illegal identifiers:

float :e;

float for;

float 9PI;

float .3.14;

float 7g;

Float firstname

-This type of identifier you should not use in your programming (Not acceptable).

2. Keywords :

Keywords are standard identifiers that have standard predefined meaning in C.
Keywords are all lowercase, since uppercase and lowercase characters are not equivalent it’s possible to utilize an uppercase keyword as an identifier but it’s not a good programming practice.

Points to remember

1. Keywords can be used only for their intended purpose.

2. Keywords can’t be used as programmer-defined identifiers.

3. The keywords can’t be used as names for variables.

Keyword in c language:

auto, double, int, struct, break, else, long, switch, case, enum, register, typedef, char, extern, return, union, etc.....

3. String

Strings in c is an array of characters having null characters‘\0’ at the end of the string. Strings in c are enclosed in double-quotes(“”) and characters are enclosed in single-quotes('').

4. Constants

A character constant is a single character, enclosed in single quotation marks.
e.g., ‘A’ ‘B’ ‘1’

5. Operators

The symbols which are used to perform logical and mathematical operations in a C program are called C operators.
These C operators join individual constants and variables to form expressions.
Operators, constants, and variables are combined together to form the expressions.
Consider the expression A + B * 5.

Escape sequence characters

Character combinations consisting of a backslash (\) followed by a letter or by a combination of digits are called "escape sequences."
C uses some backslash characters in output functions for formatting the output. These characters are called Escape sequence characters. In these characters, it consists of two characters, But it is treated as a single character.
Escape sequences are typically used to specify actions such as carriage returns and tab movements on terminals and printers. They are also used to provide literal representations of nonprinting characters and characters that usually have special meanings, such as the double quotation mark (").

In this tutorial, you will learn about the basics of the C programming language.

Introduction :

The language C was developed in the early 1970s by Dennis Ritchie to be used by UNIX operating system.

It was named ‘C’ because many of its features were derived from an earlier language called ‘B’.

Although C was designed for implementing system software, it was later on widely used for developing portable application software. Like Adobe Systems, Google Applications, Mozilla Firefox, MySQL Server, etc.

Documentation Section:-

The documentation section consists of a set of comment lines, giving the name of the program, the author, and other details, which the programmer would like to use later. The comments can be written in two ways:

a) Multi-line comment

/* This is a multi-line comment */

b) Single-line comment

// This is a single-line comment

Link Section:-

The link section provides instructions to the compiler to link functions from the system library.
If we want to access the functions stored in the library, it is necessary to tell the compiler about the files to be accessed. This is achieved by using the preprocessor directive #include as follows:

#include<filename>

Where filename is the name of the library file that contains the required function definition. Preprocessor directives are placed at the beginning of the program. Some of the examples are:

#include<math.h>

Definition Section

The definition section defines all symbolic constants.
A #define is a preprocessor compiler directive and not a statement. Therefore #define lines should not end with a semicolon.
Symbolic constants are usually written in uppercase so that they are easily distinguished from lowercase variable names.
#define instructions are usually placed before the main( ) function.

main( ) Function Section

Every C program must have one main( ) function section. This section contains two parts, the declaration part, and the executable part.
The declaration part declares all the variables used in the executable part.
There is at least one instruction in the executable part.
These two parts must appear between the opening and the closing braces.
The program execution begins at the opening brace and ends at the closing brace. The closing brace of the main function section is the logical end of the program.
All the statements in the declaration and executable parts end with a semicolon (;).

Subprogram Section

The subprogram section contains all the user-defined functions that are called in the main functions. User-defined functions are generally placed immediately after the main function, although they may appear in any order.

▶The next line /*...*/ will be ignored by the compiler and it has been put to add

▶The next line printf(...) is another function available in C which causes the

To write a computer program, a standard programming language is used.

A programming language is composed of a set of instructions in a language understandable to the programmer and recognizable by a computer.

Programming languages can be classiﬁed as high-level, middle-level, and low-level.

High-level Languages

High-level programming languages such as COBOL, FORTRAN, and BASIC, Such languages have instructions that are similar to human languages and have a set of grammar that makes it easy for a programmer to write programs and identify and correct errors in them. To illustrate this point, a program written in BASIC, to obtain the sum of two numbers, is shown below.

Compiler and Interpreter

For executing a program written in a high-level language, it must be ﬁrst translated into a form the machine can understand. This is done by software called the compiler. The compiler takes the high-level language program as input and produces the machine language code as the output for the machine to execute the program.

Some examples of developing an algorithm using step-form

For illustrating the step-form the following conventions are assumed:

Each algorithm will be logically enclosed by two statements START and STOP.

To accept data from the user, the INPUT or READ statements are to be used.

To display any user message or the content of a variable, a PRINT statement will be used.

Note:- that the message will be enclosed within quotes.

There are several steps in an algorithm. Each step results in an action. The steps are to be acted upon sequentially in the order they are arranged or directed.

Operators Used in Algorithm:

The arithmetic operators that will be used in the expressions are

(i) ‘←’ ….Assignment (the left-hand side of ‘←’ should always be a single variable)

The expression x ← 6 means that a value 6 is assigned to the variable x. In terms of memory storage, it means a value of 6 is stored at a location in memory that is allocated to the variable x.

(ii) ‘+’….. Addition

Example:

The expression z ← x + y means the value contained in variable x and the value contained in variable y is added and the resulting value obtained is assigned to the variable z.

(iii) ‘–’….. Subtraction

Example:

The expression z ← x – y means the value contained in variable y is subtracted from the value contained in variable x and the resulting value obtained is assigned to the variable z

(iv) ‘*’….. Multiplication

Example:

Consider the following expressions written in sequence:

x ← 5

y ← 6

z ← x * y

The result of the multiplication between x and y is 30. This value is therefore assigned to z.

(v) ‘/’….. Division

Example:

The following expressions written in sequence illustrates the meaning of the division operator :

x ← 10

y ← 6

Z ← x/y

In propositions, the commonly used relational operators will include

(i) ‘>’ ….. Greater than

Example:

The expression x > y means if the value contained in x is larger than that in y then the outcome of the expression is true, which will be taken as 1. Otherwise, if the outcome is false then it would be taken as 0.

(ii) ‘<=’ …..Less than or equal to

Example:

The expression x <= y implies that if the value held in x is either less than or equal to the value held in y then the outcome of the expression is true and so it will be taken as 1. But if the outcome of the relational expression is false then it is taken as 0.

(iii) ‘<’ …… Less than

Example:

Here the expression x < y implies that if the value held in x is less than that held in y then the relational expression is true, which is taken as 1, otherwise the expression is false and hence will be taken as 0.

(iv) ‘=’ …… Equality

Example:

The expression x = y means that if the value in x and that in y are the same then this relational expression is true and hence the outcome is 1 otherwise the outcome is false or 0.

(v) ‘>=’ …… Greater than or equal to

Example:

The expression x >= y implies that if the value in x is larger or equal to that in y then the outcome of the expression is true or 1, otherwise it is false or 0.

(vi) ‘!=’ …… Non- equality

Example:

The expression x != y means that if the value contained in x is not equal to the value contained in y then the outcome of the expression is true or 1, otherwise it is false or 0.

The most commonly used logical operators will be AND, OR, and NOT.

These operators are used to specify multiple test conditions forming a composite proposition.

(i)‘AND’…… Conjunction

The outcome of an expression is true or 1 when both the propositions AND-ed are true otherwise it is false or 0.

Example: Consider the expressions

x ← 2

y ← 1

x = 2 AND y = 0

In the above expression, the proposition ‘x = 2’ is true because the value in x is 2. Similarly, the proposition ‘y = 0’ is false as y holds 1 and therefore this proposition is false or 0. Thus, the above expression may be represented as ‘true’ AND ‘false’ the outcome for which is false or 0.

(ii) ‘OR’ …… Disjunction

The outcome of an expression is true or 1 when any one of the propositions OR-ed is true otherwise it is false or 0.

Example: Consider the expressions

x ← 2

y ← 1

x != 2 OR y = 0

Here, the proposition ‘x = 2’ is true since x holds 2 while the proposition ‘y = 0’ is untrue or false. Hence the third expression may be represented as ‘true’ OR ‘false’ the outcome for which is true or 1.

(iii) ‘NOT’ …… Negation

If the outcome of a proposition is ‘true’, it becomes ‘false’ when negated or NOT-ed.

Example: Consider the expression

x ← 2

NOT x = 2

The proposition ‘x = 2’ is ‘true’ as x contains the value 2. But the second expression negates this by the logical operator NOT which gives an outcome ‘false’.

What is a variable?

Almost every algorithm contains data and usually, the data is ‘contained’ in what is called a variable.

The variable is a container for a value that may vary during the execution of the program.

For example the addition of two numbers required two values which are stored in two different variables like value1 and value2.

So here value1 and value2 are the two different variables, its value may change during program execution.

What is an algorithm?

It is an effective procedure for solving a problem in a finite number of steps.
It is effective, which means that an answer is found and it has a finite number of steps.
A well-designed algorithm will always provide an answer; it may not be the desired answer but there will be an answer.
A well-designed algorithm is also guaranteed to terminate.

For writing any algorithm, the following has to be known :

3.Expected output

For example:

Suppose you check your result on any website,

So first you enter your name or id number on that website.

Website search your name or id number on their database.

And you get your rank or marks.

In this case,

Input - Your Name/id number

The task to be performed - Search for your name/id number

The key features of an algorithm:-

There are three key features in an algorithm.

1.Sequence (Process)

2.Decision (Selection)

3.Repetition (Iteration / Looping)

1.Sequence (Process) :

It means that each step or process in the algorithm is executed in the specified order.

Each process must be in the proper place otherwise the algorithm will fail.

2.Decision (Selection) - If...then, If...then...else.. :

In the algorithm the outcome of a decision is either true or false, there is no state in between.

The outcome of the decision is based on some conditions that can only result in true or false value.

For example :

If today is Sunday then holiday.

The general form of decision (if...then...),

If proposition then process

It means, if the proposition is true then execute the process.

A proposition is a statement, which can only true or false.

3.Repetition (Iteration / Looping)

Repetition can be implemented using a construct like,

The repeat loop is used to iterate or repeat a process or sequence until some condition becomes false.

The general form of the repeat loop is,
