Every once in a while, scientific perfection in the way of hardware design appears. The two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity come to mind along with the Planck, an exquisitely designed space craft developed to measure the microwave background radiation of the universe by cooling its sensors down to 0.1 degrees above absolute zero via liquid Helium.

The detectors of the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) only work properly when cooled to very low temperatures, and for the duration of the mission have been cooled to 0.1 degrees above absolute zero (-273.15 Celsius) – making them the coldest known place in space! The refrigerator that keeps them cold relies on helium gas, and it is this that has finally been exhausted.

Cardiff University researchers, led by Professor Peter Ade, have been heavily involved in the design, build, testing and operation of HFI for over ten years. “We put as much Helium-4 and Helium-3 gas onboard as we could squeeze in and are therefore delighted that the HFI has operated for almost three times its nominal mission lifetime”, explained Professor Ade. “This is a testimony to the expertise of the scientific and technical teams who designed, built and operated Planck and its scientific instruments.”

Originally, the Mars Rovers mission was targeted for 90 days, it's now going on 7 years, a testimony to visionary engineering without question.

How US lost out on iPhone Work is a must read to see why our economy is in the dumper. What's not said in this otherwise excellent NYTimes piece is the fact corporations were encouraged to go overseas for workers instead of staying here thanks, in large part, to the Fed and WS bankers striving to reward investors at all costs while the government helped out by allowing said companies to avoid taxes because "monies were made overseas". This is why GE paid no taxes in 2011.

As stated before, the article's terrific but what's even better is the interactive graphic one can see by clicking the image at the top of this post. It's a primer on why we are such trouble on the employment side of things, a situation which could get worse given the acceleration in all things digital with emphasis on robotics and AI, the twin engines of digital manufacturing.

But as Steven P. Jobs of Apple spoke, President Obama interrupted with an inquiry of his own: what would it take to make iPhones in the United States?

Not long ago, Apple boasted that its products were made in America. Today, few are. Almost all of the 70 million iPhones, 30 million iPads and 59 million other products Apple sold last year were manufactured overseas.

Why can’t that work come home? Mr. Obama asked.

Mr. Jobs’s reply was unambiguous. “Those jobs aren’t coming back,” he said, according to another dinner guest.

The president’s question touched upon a central conviction at Apple. It isn’t just that workers are cheaper abroad. Rather, Apple’s executives believe the vast scale of overseas factories as well as the flexibility, diligence and industrial skills of foreign workers have so outpaced their American counterparts that “Made in the U.S.A.” is no longer a viable option for most Apple products.

First off, I love books as yours truly is a voracious reader of the first order, I have stacks of them fairly well organized in book shelves all around the house and continue to be in a prolonged state of morning regarding the death of two Borders stores that were but a short drive from the house. Be as it may, the news Apple is doing a Garage Band number on text books is a good thing because the old way of creating and distributing textbooks that go out of date the minute they're published is an unsustainable way to do education in the connected age of the web.

Books created for iBooks 2 can have all manner of media attached, complete with multitouch capabilities. The company listed numerous ways in which iBooks 2 authors can create engaging content for students, including multiple-choice questions with immediate feedback within the text, the ability to make notes and highlights that can be found in a single location as note cards or sprinkled throughout the text, ways to explore embedded graphics and 3D animations, full-motion movies, and more.

iBooks 2 itself is an app for the iPad, but books for the application can be found within the already existing iBookstore under a new "textbook" category, with free samples available to those who want to try out the books first. Students can use codes to redeem them for books and can re-download them whenever they need to.

But how does one create a textbook for iBooks 2? Apple also announced a Mac application on Thursday called "iBooks Author," which Apple Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller described as "powerful and feature-rich." The interface, as demoed to the audience, is similar to Apple's iWork applications and allows authors to format books through WYSIWYG interaction and format the pages in a variety of ways.

But that's not all! Apple brought out its Senior VP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue to discuss a new iTunes U app for iPad. The app will allow college and university students to download full courses from Apple's iTunes U section on iTunes and view them in an easy-to-use manner. The app lets students navigate through a course overview and outline, and professors can customize their course offerings by adding office hours and credits as well. Instructors can post notes that get sent to students' iPads and even make assignments through the app.

The issue now is how to properly integrate Apple's offering into an under financed and often dysfunctional teaching environment as the game changing aspect of this tech introduces the issue of a "wicked problem" whereby the questions and answers pertaining on how to make this happen changes the problem itself.

No doubt, this tech will eventually come to Windows and the cloud as the educational system, as it stands today, cannot continue on the path it is in and... the market, outside of Apple, is just too big and important to ignore.

Addendum: Seems there's a prof who wants to do away with term papers and replace them with blogs, something yours truly totally agrees with since starting up BRT over four years ago. Why you may ask, because of folks like you reading and commenting on articles posted in it, something aspiring writers can relate to in the digital age in which we live.

Of all the challenges faced by college and high school students, few inspire as much angst, profanity, procrastination and caffeine consumption as the academic paper. The format — meant to force students to make a point, explain it, defend it, repeat it (whether in 20 pages or 5 paragraphs) — feels to many like an exercise in rigidity and boredom, like practicing piano scales in a minor key.

And so there may be rejoicing among legions of students who have struggled to write a lucid argument about Sherman’s March, the disputed authorship of “Romeo and Juliet,” or anything antediluvian. They have a champion: Cathy N. Davidson, an English professor at Duke, wants to eradicate the term paper and replace it with the blog.

Her provocative positions have lent kindling to an intensifying debate about how best to teach writing in the digital era.

“This mechanistic writing is a real disincentive to creative but untrained writers,” says Professor Davidson, who rails against the form in her new book, “Now You See It: How the Brain Science of Attention Will Transform the Way We Live, Work, and Learn.”

There's a new force in town, a force who's time has come, where tech enables the common man to fight back and make his voice heard, thanks to the net, the last bastion of freedom in the world. Additionally, this is not to say the web is perfect because the net, if not properly understood, can hurt, humiliate and steal you blind yet, at the same time, if properly managed, becomes a gateway to knowledge, collaboration and creativity at levels unimagined just a few years ago. Based on just what has happened, the possibility of us taking back our country becomes real because the internet and the hardware and software constructs that drive it, enable our voice to be heard at levels the insular bought and paid for politicos in DC can no longer safely afford to ignore in spite of K Street bribes and surreptitious corporate funding of campaigns to keep these compliant fools in power.

Yet on Wednesday this formidable old guard was forced to make way for the new as Web powerhouses backed by Internet activists rallied opposition to the legislation through Internet blackouts and cascading criticism, sending an unmistakable message to lawmakers grappling with new media issues: Don’t mess with the Internet.

As a result, the legislative battle over two once-obscure bills to combat the piracy of American movies, music, books and writing on the World Wide Web may prove to be a turning point for the way business is done in Washington. It represented a moment when the new economy rose up against the old.

The Great Unwinding II

We are at a critical point in history where the status quo is fighting for it's life as we mover further into the 21st century. Signs of this struggle are everywhere. (Note: This is but a small sampler, of course.)

In Congress, the effort to pass PIPA/SOPA to impose censorship and benefit hollywood and the music industry at the cost of endless litigation, innovation and security on the net continues unabated while central banks use tech to continue the illusion they actually have enough money in hand to save the Euro.
Congress strikes again by positing this bill, H.R.3699 -- Research Works Act whereby scientific research paid for by the government (Us), which is now free, would be privatized.
Fracking, used to extract natural gas at the cost of destroying the environment for short term gain, is erroneously touted as the way to stave off the inevitable fact peak oil is past and that alternatives to fossil fuels must be undertaken in serious fashion before it's too late.
Corporate personhood enables the powers at be to funnel even more monies to Congress and to the presidency in order to insure whoever is in office supports the status quo.
WS banksters remain free, untouched by Eric Holder and the "rule" of law.
Endless war and the attack on civil rights as seen by the enactment of the Defense Authorization Act opens the way to potential military dictatorship given the fact the military now supersedes the authority of the FBI and police in being able to intern US citizens indefinitely without due process if one is suspected of being a "terrorist" as "security" must be maintained at the cost of liberty even though the threat of entities like al- Qaeda is questionable at best. (see Afghanistan as example)
Adherence to endless war (Iran anyone?) and the printing of money, courtesy of the Fed, to maintain the TBTF banks while bankrupting the nation continues to be covered up by the corporate controlled media as we endure the never ending presidential campaign whereby "serious candidates" "debate" over gay rights, religion and being a pure conservative instead of discussing why our money has been systematically stolen from us thanks to government collusion with the Fed and the WS banksters.
US education, buffeted by cutbacks, fear, politics and ignorance of all things digital, threatens to become irrelevant in a world connected by the web.
Resource wars heat up due to excess plundering of the planet's irreplaceable offerings.
The oceans, polluted and overfished, are at the breaking point while firms like Monsanto dominate the food chain by producing GMO corn even though such crops have questionable value for humanity.
Environmental degradation and massive extinctions of earth's life forms continues unabated, driven by ever more fossil fuel use and the desire to product more "stuff" no matter what the cost may be.
And on and on and on it goes......

Because instant and unfettered communication of information of all types (via the web) has a tendency to alter human behavior in unpredictable ways, the impact of same on the powers at be cannot be predicted in any great detail but after all, we already knew that, right?

The Net never ceases to amaze. The NYTimes has a terrific article titled The Vitrural Body, Ready for Dissection, a piece discussing the revolution coming to anatomy courtesy of BioDigital, a startup focusing on all things digital regarding the human body (Zygote is another player gearing up for this emerging tech as well.

PEOPLE wear 3-D glasses for new movies like “The Adventures of Tintin.” But for medical school?

The answer is yes at the New York University School of Medicine, which is using 3-D technology to update a rite of passage for would-be doctors: anatomy class.

In a basement lab at NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan last month, students in scrubs and surgical gloves hovered over cadavers on gurneys, preparing, as would-be doctors have for centuries, to separate rib cages and examine organs. But the dead are imperfect stand-ins for the living. Death — and embalming fluid — take a toll.

So, in an adjacent classroom, a group of students wearing 3-D glasses made by Nvidia, a graphics processing firm, dissected a virtual cadaver projected on a screen. Using a computer to control the stereoscopic view, they swooped through the virtual body, its sections as brightly colored as living tissue. First, the students scrutinized layers of sinewy pink muscles layered over ivory bones. Then, with the click of a mouse, they examined a close-up of the heart, watching as deep blue veins and bright red arteries made the heart pump.

Compared with the real cadavers in the lab next door, the virtual one seemed as dynamic as Imax.

Now, if only health care was as promising as this, food for thought, don't you think?

According to Alan November , education will rapidly become irrelevant in the connected age of the net if it is not properly integrated with tech. In listening to a talk he gave in my home town, I learned quite a bit on why education in this country is hurting, primarily due to politics, fear, the urge to control and profound ignorance of what tech is really all about, something rather disconcerting when considering just how pervasive technology is becoming. His definition of technology happening after one is born is apt because a child born in 2012 will have no idea what a PC is, a notion Arthur C. Clarke expanded upon in 3001, The Final Odyssey, where people would have absolutely no idea how any tech worked due to 1; the sheer complexity of same and 2; the level of integration of it to man, something Ray Kurzweil talks about in great detail in The Singularity is Near.

November also introduced a practical way to better search the web using Google Operators, website URL modifiers yours truly knew a little about but have never used in trolling the net for nuggets of gold such as the ones seen in this post. This will change without question :) While talking about this, November brought up the issues of trust, competency and empathy, core attributes kids and adults alike must have in abundance in order to intelligently deal with the ever increasing flood of information (bogus/otherwise) issuing forth from the web, the construct that is changing how we do business on planet earth.

End game: 2012 looks problematical to say the least, thanks, in large part, to the negative impact the central banks have had on the world's economy. Factoring this in with peak oil, endless war, inept governance and climate change only adds to the treacherous sledding envisioned for the upcoming year but there is hope. Science, tech, innovation and creativity, combined with an emerging sense that we are the 99%, can make a difference but only if we have the courage to make it happen.

Remember, maintaining the status quo is, in fact, Einstein's definition of Insanity of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

BRT has talked about 3D stereo lithography numerous times as this tech, will, in time, change how man makes things, especially when the technique employs sophisticated methodologies similar to what GE is using to build jet engines.

To do it, a laser traces out the shape of the injector's cross-section on a bed of cobalt-chrome powder, fusing the powder into solid form to build up the injector one ultrathin layer at a time. This promises to be less expensive than traditional manufacturing methods, and it should lead to a lighter part—which is to say a better one. The first parts will go into jet engines, says Prabhjot Singh, who runs a lab at GE that focuses on improving and applying this and similar 3-D printing processes. But, he adds, "there's not a day we don't hear from one of the other divisions at GE interested in using this technology."

These innovations are at the forefront of a radical change in manufacturing technology that is especially appealing in advanced applications like aerospace and cars. The 3-D printing techniques won't just make it more efficient to produce existing parts. They will also make it possible to produce things that weren't even conceivable before—like parts with complex, scooped-out shapes that minimize weight without sacrificing strength. Unlike machining processes, which can leave up to 90 percent of the material on the floor, 3-D printing leaves virtually no waste—a huge consideration with expensive metals such as titanium. The technology could also reduce the need to store parts in inventory, because it's just as easy to print another part—or an improved version of it—10 years after the first one was made. An automobile manufacturer receiving reports of a failure in a seat belt mechanism could have a reconfigured version on its way to dealers within days.

With a bit of luck, society can survive in this age of peak oil but only if transparency is forced upon governance, corporate and finance before it's too late.

Earlier research by team members Alfons Fischer at the University of Duisburg-Essen and Markus Wimmer at Rush University Medical Center discovered that a lubricating layer forms on metallic joints as a result of friction. Once formed, the layer reduces friction as well as wear and corrosion. This layer is called a tribological layer and is where the sliding takes place, much like how an ice skate slides not on the ice but on a thin layer of water.

But, until now, researchers did not know what the layer was. (It forms on the surfaces of both the ball and the socket.) It had been assumed that the layer was made of proteins or something similar in the body that got into the joint and adhered to the implant's surfaces.

The interdisciplinary team studied seven implants that were retrieved from patients for a variety of reasons. The researchers used a number of analytical tools, including electron and optical microscopies, to study the tribological layer that formed on the metal parts. (An electron microscope uses electrons instead of light to image materials.)

The electron-energy loss spectra, a method of examining how the atoms are bonded, showed a well-known fingerprint of graphitic carbon. This, together with other evidence, led the researchers to conclude that the layer actually consists primarily of graphitic carbon, a well-established solid lubricant, not the proteins of natural joints.

For 30,000 years, the permafrost has remained quiescent, holding onto carbon dioxide and methane, it's O2 starved cousin, at bay, keeping runaway global warming from happening until we came along to upset the apple cart.

A recent estimate suggests that the perennially frozen ground known as permafrost, which underlies nearly a quarter of the Northern Hemisphere, contains twice as much carbon as the entire atmosphere.

Temperatures are warming across much of that region, primarily, scientists believe, because of the rapid human release of greenhouse gases. Permafrost is warming, too. Some has already thawed, and other signs are emerging that the frozen carbon may be becoming unstable.

but that's not all.

When organic material comes out of the deep freeze, it is consumed by bacteria. If the material is well-aerated, bacteria that breathe oxygen will perform the breakdown, and the carbon will enter the air as carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas. But in areas where oxygen is limited, like the bottom of a lake or wetland, a group of bacteria called methanogens will break down the organic material, and the carbon will emerge as methane.

Scientists are worried about both gases. They believe that most of the carbon will emerge as carbon dioxide, with only a few percent of it being converted to methane. But because methane is such a potent greenhouse gas, the 41 experts in the recent survey predicted that it would trap about as much heat as the carbon dioxide would.

In indirect fashion, the slow motion push of global warming will bring tragedy to those who cannot deal with it just as the fatal attraction to power brings tragedy to Macbeth, a supremely gifted man unable to escape the clutches of unbridled ambition.

Filling one box car up would generate a cool $3,492,000,000 ($23,280,000 X 149 [12,5' = 150"- 1" {the ream already computed} or 149]).

or... $15,000,000,000 divided by $3,492,000,000 = 4.295 box cars filled with $100s.

The weight of each note is one gram. There are 454 grams in one U.S. pound, therefore, there should be 454 notes in (1) pound. Ergo: 150,000,000 bills divided by 454 (1 pound of $100s) = 330,396 pounds or 165 tons (30396/2000 = 165) .

Now, let's do the math for 29 trillion dollars, the amount the Fed gave to banks and
foreign entities beginning in 2008.

$15 billion x 1.94 = $29 billion
4.295 box cars x 1.94 = 8.332 box cars filled with $100s = the aforementioned $29 billion
165 tons x 1.94 = 320 tons = Weight of the $29 billion
To get the totals for $29 trillion, simply multiply 8.332 and 320 by 1000 or...
8.332 box cars x 1000 = 8,332, box cars filled with $100s = $29 trillion
320 tons x 1000 = 320,000 tons = Weight of the $29 trillion

Of course, this is just a mental exercise as the actual possibility of having 29 trillion dollars in hand is but a figment of one's imagination, and besides, it's far easier to transform dollars into bits, entities able to be manipulated, moved and created at a moment's notice courtesy of tech, fractional reserve banking and the magical ability to turn IOUs into assets in feeding the multitudes of '"destitute" bankers and foreign interests who, as we know all too well, are too big to fail, don't you think?
