2012-10-08T15:19:00.000-07:00

1. Mouse Hunt - (3/10) - Supposed to be a funny movie, found it childish.

2. Barfi - (6/10) - Not a great story, I do like slow movies; Still walking is one of my favorite movie and it is very slow but it has the same pace all over in the film, but Barfi is just way too slow, it was an endurance test for me.

3. Once upon a time in the west - (4/10) - I wanted to see this movie as Sholay is loosely based on it. But afterall sholay is sholay.

4. Force - (1/10) - Remake of kakhaa kakhaa in which Suryaa looks hot hot hot, Somebody please teach John Abraham how to move at least 1 or 2 face muscles! My love for John is blind and deaf.

11. Gosford Park - (6/10) - Murder mystery, showing the lives of upstairs guest and downstairs servants at a party in a country house in England.
12. The Weather man - (7/10) - This movie was really weird, I still liked it. I liked the way they have shown the analogy between the weather man - his profession, personality and personal life.
13. Arranged - (8/10) - I thought arrange marriages happen only in India but this story is about a Muslim and Jewish girl getting married the arranged way. Liked it.

14. Samaantar - (2/10) - I was expecting good cinema because of Amol Palekar in it but was disappointed.
15. Eat drink man woman -(7/10) - loved the concept, story and end.
16. Half Nelson - (3/10) - I watched the whole movie and didn't understand why it was made, what were they trying to show but of course it happens to be a critically acclaimed movie.

17. A kiss before dying - (7/10) - Bollywood film Bazigar is based on this film. Liked both.
18. The Graduate - (5/10) - I thought it was alright, a young man in love with an older woman. Must be a shocker at the time it was made.
19. Donnie Darko - (6/10) - I wish I had read the book on which this movie was based on. I could not understand the concepts of parallel universes, wormholes and are not explained well in the movie. I liked the experience though.

20. Take me Home - (2/10) - Seriously! what was it all about!

21. Harry Brown - (5/10) - Again I liked the concept but it was too gory for me.

28. Sling blade- (3/10) - its a different movie, did not like it much though
29. Captain America : the first avenger - (3/10) - it is slow for an avenger movie also did not like acting.

30. Limitless - (7/10) - A writer discovers a top-secret drug which bestows him with super human abilities.Gripping and entertaining.
31. The next three days - (7/10) - Good performance by Russel Crowe. Good thriller.

32. Heroine - (2/10) - Was expecting something better by Madhur Bhandarkar and Kareena Kapoor. Hopefully Bhandarkar will make something different and unique next time.

33. Ek main aur ek tu - (3/10) - I don't like Imran Khan, Kareena kapoor looked fresh.
34. Housefull 2 - (7/10) - I hated Sajid Khan movies and his sense of humor but this movie proves me wrong.
35. Ishaqzade - (4/10) - Main characters run too much, by the end of it the viewers feel tired as if they ran a marathon.

36. Arjun: the warrior prince - (3/10) - good attempt but animation fails after first few scenes.
37. Ferrari ki Sawaari - (2/10) - People loved it and it was a hit, I didn't like it at all, way too sweet for me.
38. Supermen of Malegaon - (8/10) - I simply loved the concept, somebody thinking of making a movie on movie making and that too so interesting, very unique and loved it.

39. English Vinglish - (8/10) - I have written a separate review for English Vinglish on this blog. Its a good movie, it does have some loopholes in the story but the overall impact is so strong that I can ignore those loopholes.

40. The Bourne Legacy - (2/10) - Pathetic, 2 stars just for Jeremy Renner for being so hot.

English Vinglish movie review

2012-10-06T21:22:00.000-07:00

English Vinglish - I went to Europe trip alone at a time in my life when I couldn't speak even one sentence of English properly.

Later on I understood that not being able to speak in English was a bigger problem for me in India than anywhere in Europe. Be it Germany, Switzerland or France people take pride in speaking their native languages unlike in India.

I always suffered from inferiority complex in big cities like Pune/Mumbai where people are taking pride speaking in English than speaking their mother tongue. After my Europe trip I stayed in London for a month to explore. Even though I was in birth place of English I did not feel intimidated and I felt accepted in my every interaction.

Of course later on I learnt English (it took me more time to learn than like Sridevi in the movie ;-)). I would have missed on so many good things in life otherwise; I live in the US, get to live this lifestyle, experience the amazing work culture here, enjoy Hollywood and International cinema (as the subtitles are in English) and last but not the least reading English Books which I enjoy immensely!

Well the movie English Vinglish touches the fact that living in India one may feel intimidated if they don’t speak English. But it is not just about learning a language there is a lot more to the movie. This movie is absolutely beautiful, I cried in a movie after a long time but at the same time it made me feel really good, may be because I could totally relate to it. Sridevi is a natural! I loved the story, direction and acting. I give it 4/5 stars.

Movie Reviews: Part 11

2012-08-03T14:39:00.002-07:00

1. Cocktail - (1/10) - Absolutely pathetic story and characters!

2. Kya super cool hain hum - (1/10) - I actually liked kya cool hain hum but hated this part.

3. Bol Bachchan - (1/10) - Rohit Shetty! Please! you can do better than this... Abhishek Bachchan it is high time you start acting!

4. The Cider house rules - (7/10) - Different story, liked it.

5. Junglee - (5/10) - I absolutely admire Shammi Kapoor so watched a few old Hindi movies this month. If this movie had released after 1990s it would have flopped like anything. Shammi's sister in the movie is 7 months pregnant and does not know about it! The songs are amazing and I guess is the only reason why this movie might have worked.

6. Dil Deke Dekho - (3/10) - This happens to be Asha Parekh's first movie, I LOVE Asha Parekh. The movie isn't that good though.

7. Satrangi Re - (7/10) - Good Marathi movie, witness the changed face of Marathi cinema.

8. Kshanbhar Vishranti - (5/10) - Marathi movie - Good enough.

9. Gair - (6/10) - Marathi movie - I actually liked it.

10. Marathon Man - (6/10) - Good thriller movie.

11. Boys don't cry - (3/10) - Did not like it much. May be because I could not relate to it but it the responsibility of story telling to make the viewer feel it even if they can not relate to the character or situations.

12. Thieves - (5/10) - It was alright.

13. Black Rain - (3/10) - I can watch any crap movie for Michael Douglas. This one is a good example.

14. Snatch - (6/10) - Some scenes were hilarious. Brad Pitt's performance is a surprise package.

15. Paan Singh Tomar - (5/10) - Good attempt, could have been better, Irfan khan is a good actor.

16. Fargo - (8/10) - Absolutely amazing.

17. De Talli - (6/10) - I wonder why I liked it, there is nothing great about the movie. I liked it because of Rimi Sen I guess.

18. Z - (2/10) - I failed to understand the drama in the movie but this happens to be a famous and oscar winning movie.

19. Tanu weds Manu - (5/10) - Okay timepass.

20. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge - (9/10) - I watched it like the 100th time. I feel very nostalgic after watching this movie. I love the songs, dilogues, characters, situations, costumes in this movie. Of course I have to bear with Shahrukh Khan for 3 hours but it is totally worth to go through the pain ;-).

Part 10 - April Movies

2012-05-09T14:29:00.000-07:00

1. House of Flying Daggers - 9/10 - Awesome effects, Great action, amazing story... loved it

2. Berlin Jerusalem - 1/10 - Completely failed to understand the movie, couldn't even watch the whole movie, it was too boring.

3. Umbaratha - 6/10 - Jabbar Patel has a Benegal style of direction but of course Benegal is a far better director... I thought the movie was okay.

4. Citizen Kane - 9/10 - Just mind blowing... super cinematography

5. The Way Back - 6/10 - Decent movie, enjoyed it.

6. Marvel's the Avengers - 8/10 - Of course liked it but found it a little long

7. Management - 2/10 - My love for Jenifer Aniston makes me watch stupid movies like this. Can't help!

8. Dookudu - 2/10 - Pathetic, Mahesh Babu is totally overrated, he is a looker though.

9. Descendents - 8/10 - There is nothing great about the story but still I liked it. Hawaii is shot like never before, felt like visiting it again.

10. Control - 2/10 - It is a critically acclaimed movie based on a singer's life. I didn't like it much.

11. Antonia's Line - 5/10 - It was alright, different story but a little dragged.

12. Departures - 8/10 - Loved this Japanese movie.

Movie Reviews: Part 9

2012-04-12T10:17:00.004-07:00

2. Bridesmaids - Super funny, weird and yet so inspiring...

3. Anaganaga Oka Raju - My love for Urmila makes me watch crappy movies like this.

4. Drive - Have heard really good reviews about it but I couldn't watch so much violence. Didn't like it.

5. Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster - Never thought that a movie with that kind of a name would be so brilliant... loved it.

6. Belle Epoque - It was okay, nothing great.

7. Desamuduru - I am in love with the actor in this movie though he is loud and overacts. I hated the movie.

8. Kahaani - I am in love with Vidya Balan... she is just awesome. Movie is awesome too.

9. Kaakha Kaakha - have heard a lot about the actor, didnt' enjoy the movie much.

Movies Reviews : Part 8

2012-03-02T12:55:00.000-08:00

343. secret world of arrietty (8/10)- Simple and slow story but still brilliant...

344. Sherlock Holmes 2: A game of shadows (4/10)- I loved the first part but this one was way too dragged, I heard people snoring in the theater.

345. Desi Boyz (1/10) - what a hopeless, pathetic, stupid movie is this!

346. Mission Impossible 4 (3/10)- Watched it for Anil Kapoor who had 1 minute long role in the movie! super flop movie.

347. Ladies vs. Ricky Behl (3/10)- Actor in this movie acts as if sleep walking, the actress acts similar to her first few films as if she continues the character from her earlier films. Movie is just about okay.

348. Rockstar (8/10)- What a fine performance by Ranbir Kapoor, pathetic acting by whoever the actress is and ofcourse director’s illogical approad approach towards relationships stings me. A.R. Rehman is a fine musician but his music lacks the anger/force/rage/potency factor which is required in the rock music.

349. Deool (marathi movie) (7/10) - Awesome first half where you just don’t want it to end and a repetitive second half when you feel like pleading the director to end it. Great concept and representation.

350. Ek Main Aur Ek Tu (2/10)- I forwarded it and still felt it took a while to end :-), it is very similar to Jab we met, a bad version of jab we met...

351. The Game (6/10)- for some reason I love Michael Douglas, the concept of this movie was awesome, thriller suspense... I won’t write too much else it would spoil the fun

352. 7 khoon maaf (6/10)- I found it good but weird, not great like any other movies by Vishal Bhardwaj

Movie Reviews : Part 7

2010-06-03T13:05:00.000-07:00

342. Step Mom – 9/10 – amazing story and acting by everyone.

343. The fifth element – 1/10 - This is probably one of the worst hollywood movies I have ever seen... full of ham scenes and super flop acting by Milla Jovovich makes it unbearable to watch.

344. Bring it on – 4/10 – Movie on cheerleading… nothing great about it.

345. Deer Hunter – 6/10 – Story of a deer hunter and how the Vietnam war changes his life. I thought it was good but slow.

346. Cinema Paradiso – Italian – 8/10 – story about a boy who wants to make movies and how he fulfills his dream.

347. Well done Abba – Hindi – 6/10 – I think this is a remake of a Marathi movie. I like Sham Benegal’s movies, but this one doesn’t have that typical Benegal touch to it.

348. Good Bye Lenin – German – 8/10 – Liked it, cannot believe somebody can do so much for their parents.

349. An Education – 7/10 – liked it except the actor.

350. Echo of the elephants – documentary - 9/10 – Life of elephants.

351. Iron Man 2 – 2/10 – B O R I N G

352. How to train your dragon – 9/10 – sweet, cute, feel good

Movie Reviews : Part 6

2010-05-11T15:56:00.000-07:00

330. Love Sex aur Dhoka (0/10) what a pathetic movie!

331. Kickass (10/10)
Awesome movie based on superheroes.

332. Billy Elliott – 10/10
What a superb movie based on a life of a kid who wants to be a ballet dancer.

333. Withnail and I – 2/10 - Supposed to be a British comedy movie. What a nonsense movie…

334. 9 (Nine) – 2/10 – didn’t like it

335. Women on the verge of nervous breakdown – 2/10 – supposed to be a funny movie… I wonder where was the fun?

336. Irreversible – 1/10 – super flop – the movie is irreversible but I could forward it :)

337. Waking Ned Divine – 10/10 – No words to explain how much I liked the characters and their acting in the movie, fine story comes as a bonus, generally it is opposite!

338. A Fish called Wanda (8/10) - Hilarious

339. Men who stare at goats (6/10) – Based on a (so called) real life story. It was okay in parts.

340. Aarya – Telugu movie – (10/10) – This is the first ever Telugu movie that I have seen. This was a huge hit in India even in the state of Maharashtra (where nobody understands Telugu). Clubs, weddings everywhere the song ‘aa ante amalapuram’ was a big time hit. People were performing on this song in gatherings/ stage performances. I was in rural part of Maharashtra for a wedding and people were dancing on aa ante… I was too curious to watch the movie and finally I got the DVD on Netflix. I loved the story, songs and SPECIALLY the actor in the movie…
;-)

341. Changeling – (9/10) – Story based on a real life incidence. Angelina Jolie in one of her best performances!

Movie Reviews : Part 5

2010-04-12T13:22:00.000-07:00

312. Rann(7/10) Hindi Movie– I liked Ram Gopal’s movie for a change. The story is different and I liked the way it is picturised and liked the camera angles too. Bachchan has a small role in the film, his character should have been shown as more aggressive that would have made his position and status in the news channel more convincing. Couldn’t buy the fact that he abides to whatever his son says and compromises on his principles and values which he has followed for years. Apart from this I think it was a good try, worth watching…

313. All about my mother (2/10) Spanish movie: Movie about trans sexual… wonder why it received Oscar award.

314. Ishquiya (8/10) - Hindi movie. Loved it. Vishal Bharadwaj is one of my favorite directors, I love the way he tells stories even if there is not much substance in the story. I love the locations/ sets where he shoots his movies… they are so realistic. One small thing with the movie though is Arshad and Vidya’s outfits/ make up could have had more rustic look to it.

315. 20,000 leagues under the sea (1/10) – sci-fi movie – didn’t like it at all!

316. Son of Rambow (2/10) – some school children getting together and making a movie, there is a lot that could have happened with that kind of story… but the movie is disappointing.

317. The hurt locker (10/10) – what an amazing movie by Kathryn Biglow… she absolutely deserved to win the Oscar and set the record of first female receiving an best director Oscar award. The movie is slow or rather too slow but the slowness of the movie is its biggest highlight.

318. Before Sunrise (1/10) – for how long can one listen and see 2 people talking to each other ..10 mins? 20 mins..? in this movie 2 people are just talking to each other for 100 minutes… boring, very boring…

319. Milk (6/10) – this is a movie on Milk’s life who was an activist for gay rights. No doubt he did great work for the gay people and their rights but was the movie worth to receive an Oscar award? I don’t think so…

320. Kolya (7/10) - Czech Movie – the kid in this movie is so cute that it is just worth watching the movie for him, the story is about how this kid brings change to a man’s life.

321. Carandiru - 2/10 - Portugese movie - This movie is based on a real life incident that happened in Brazil's Sao Paulo House of Detention ... the movie is just toooooo slowwwww

322. Twilight - 8/10 - I watched this movie as I was too curious to know why a love story between a normal girl and a vampire would be such a hit... To my surprise I loved it... The story is based in Washington, I had enough things to feel scared about such as ghosts and now vampires added to that list! scarier part is they are out there in Washington where I live :(

323. Mrs. Brown - 7/10 - Movie based on the life of Queen Victoria - the one who ruled in India... the not so good part about the movie is its end... it ends abruptly.

324. Jail - 2/10 - Hindi movie - Didn't expect something like this from Madhur Bhandarkar, I hope Madhur doesn't turn into RamGopal Verma.

325. Paa - 7/10 - Hindi movie - I am in love with Vidya Balan - the epitome of Indian beauty. I loved the songs of this film, did not like Bachchan's acting (either one), I wonder if getting a filmfare award for such a performance is justified... No wonder Amir Khan doesn't accept awards.

326. Atithi tum kab jaoge - 1/10 - Hindi movie - Please don't waste your time watching this film... not even reading its review... pathetic movie... Paresh Rawal, I beg you, please do something different!

327. Karthik calling Karthik 2/10 - I thought the movie was loosely based on the book Veronika decides to die, the book is far better though. Deepika Padukone should be kicked out of the film industry. I wonder if film industry in other parts of the world requires the heroines to be good looking other than Bollywood. Pathetic heroines like Katrina Kaif do well in Bollywood even though they CAN NOT act! But why Deepika? she isn't good looking either!

328. Marie Antoinette 6/10 - fashion, luxuriouis life of the queens!

329. Candy - 1/10 - B O R I N G

330. To catch a thief - 2/10 - I generally like Hitchcock movies but this one is too predictable and found it humdrum.

Movie reviews: part 4

2010-03-26T12:30:00.000-07:00

301. Atonement – (6/10) I just loved the story and the way it is directed but half of the movie scenes were just irrelevant and didn’t add to building the characters or the storyline.

302. Julie and Julia – (10/10) is my verdict. What an awesome movie. I think Julie and her book are very inspiring and the movie has done super justice to it.

303. The green mile – (8/10) – and the writer Stephen King rocks and so does Tom Hanks. The movie is just too slow though interesting.

304. Up in the air – (6/10) – different story… what’s this hype about George Clooney anyway, I think he is just an okay actor.

305. Singh is King – (2/10) – Akshay Kumar’s another slapstick comedy… 2 stars are for the songs by the way.

306. Natarang – (7/10) Marathi movie – based on a novel, the movie is good but I just couldn’t buy the idea that someone might not even think of the consequences before doing something in the name of passion for art.

307. Harishchandrachi Factory – (7/10) – Marathi movie – It was more like a documentary. I wonder if it deserved to go for the Oscars. Based on the first filmmaker in India – Phalke.

308. Rounders – (6/10) – I like all the gambling movies and that too with Matt Damon and Edward Norton is a feast. It could have been better storywise.

309. Teen Patti – (1/10) – Hindi Movie – Another movie on gambling – What an awful movie. A professor wanting to publish his research and dean denying. He has figured out the way to win the game 3 cards with the help of Math – probabilities. He gathers a group of students, plays with them at clubs to prove his theory and keeps playing because someone is blackmailing him. One of student attempts a suicide because he feels guilty of the greed. An actor like Ben Kingsley – wasted talent in the movie. The story should have been something like this – The professor and students play it with pride and gathers all the fund money to publish his research papers, becomes one of the richest man and the entire university and the dean are in awe. Gambling movies should be with a little bit about the style too… gambling + emotions + drama can get extremely boring if not handled with care…

310. My name is Khan (1/10) – Hindi movie – Full of ham scenes by the so called superstar of India, super senseless story, that 1 star is for Kajol

311. Precious – (4/10) – why was this nominated for the Oscars? Rape, AIDS, teen pregnancy, fatness everything in the movie is there to make you feel depressed but no I wasn’t … It just couldn’t touch my heart. 4 stars are for people who have acted well.
