Who me?

Been there, done that, should have bought a fannypack

2014-02-04T11:47:00.000-05:00

My grandma Ellie, was a lovely lady. I lost her a couple years ago (not LOST her like she's still wandering the mall but you know...ha) and life has not been the same without her. Recently my aunt was getting her house ready to sell and as a result, needed to divvy up some remnants from her life to her kids and grand kids.

Due to my aunts efforts, I became the proud owner of a lovely old hutch and some boxes. They arrived via the Mayflower (the truck...I think the ship is out of commission) the other day packed full of pictures, old yearbooks, and newspaper articles she had saved for years!

I used to get articles in the mail (she was a huge reader!) all the time with a little post-it note saying something like, "thought you'd find this interesting" or "reminded me of you..."

I found out later she would do that with everyone but of course I feel like my notes were the best...she always made people feel special no matter who they were. I strive to do that.

Anyway, one of the greatest things I found in these boxes were some of her travel journals. Remember I said she was a reader?? Well she was a quite the little writer too.

I haven't gone through all of them yet...mostly because I don't want to finish them and not have any other of her stuff to read (I adopt this train of thought with a lot of things...you should see my closet where I still have tags on clothes because I don't want to ruin them or the journals I buy that I can't use because I'm waiting for just the right thing to write in them...hot mess I know). Anyway. I did open one travel journal enough to make me wish I had done the same thing on my vacations. At the very least I could have taken pictures or saved memorabilia from places I visited and loved but then again what were the chances of me writing stuff down in a travel journal when I didn't even take pictures (or if I did, develop them)?? Haha.

Here's a couple pages from one of her journals which I'm sure you'll hear more about as I go through them. This one is from a London trip in 1977.

I am going to take baby steps to recording trips and such in honor of my grandma. I found a fun way to do that on Pinterest that is realistically more up my alley. I kinda love it and want to still do it for some vacations I've taken...luckily any trip I took where my grandma was there, she took pics so I'm sure somewhere in these boxes I'll be able to piece together a little traveller shadow box like this....until then, peace & love - Jes

So I'm getting the decor bug back in my new house. I always used to think, "just give me a house I love, an hour on Pinterest, and I'm on my way!"

Hell-ler! It's super hard though when you're on a budget of as close to $0 as I can get. After months and months planning on Pinterest, houzz and all kinds of other sites I decided to take one room at a time. I am living with 1/5 of each room done until I get it going but in the meantime my breakfast nook has come together. Woohoo! I still want to paint but now that's its functionable (I think that's a word) I'm moving on to another room. Before I do, here's what's up.

Here's the kitchen and nook. I love my kitchen but it's small so I wanted to make the nook a part of the kitchen when needed. Here's the before thanks to the previous owner who did a great job with the decor of this house.

Cute right?? Okay here's what I've done. Different look and function...but fun. Most of the goodies are thanks to my dad. Thanks dad! The table is a commercial stainless steel high top table that not only reminds me of him (he's a chef) but it gives me a great surface for food prep, service, and a craft project or two.

The wall painting is thanks to World Market. My mom and I bought the same one which Is cool because I know wherever I am, she's looking at the same artwork in her house. You know, kinda like Fivle/Fivel?! when he sings and looks up at the stars? Tearjerker. Anywho we shoved two of those in my old Mini Cooper years ago after a day of shopping and haven't looked back. It's funny because I see this painting on TV all the time. From Modern Family to The Mindy Project...it's like finding where's waldo when watching tv. Guess it's a great for backgrounds. Ha.

The stools I just got as a Christmas gift from my dad from Garden Ridge. It's hard to find sturdy stools that you don't slide off of but I sho did! I also got some baskets for underneath to hold my kitchen aid mixer and such. So I'm not a yellow person and will paint at a later date but it's good so far. Btw, the two squares on the side of the painting are metal ceiling tiles for texture and to bring in some dark elements to match the chairs. Anywho. On to work on the office!!!

Dog butts are one of a kind and NFS. Peace & love. - Jes

Lady Wrangler

2013-11-19T21:54:00.001-05:00

So here's the story. Scarves are where it's at. We all know it and we're all doing it.

Scarves always have been and always will be what's up. Now that they're super popular though, you may see funky materials...crazy colors... and

even the shape and functionality may make you go "whaaaaat?"

Can we say meow!??

CHIC&COZY FUR KITTY BLACK CAT
amazon.com

Anyway here's a new one for me and i'm loving it. This is as manly a scarf can get. I almost think scarves for men should be called something different...only because the 100% of the 1 man I surveyed thinks he too cool for a "scarf" and he's not. I'd call it a lady wrangker...a lady wrangler screams, yeah i'm confident and warm so what!?

Anyway wait till you this little gem! Look a pockeeee! mmm you mean I can keep a flask, a good book, or even your cell phone tucked away nice and safe? Hells yes. No more murses or oddly bulging back pockets.

You know what? Us girls need this too. I would SO appreciate a place for my cash, cards, and ID when i'm out and about for the night. Sometimes a purse is just redonkulous and for us larger chested girls...the over the shoulder bag just creates the great divide in your sweater (are you looking at me?). So come all girls and guys to the etsy shop SpeakeasySupplyCo (good name right?)and get yourself a scarf with a job ya'll.

Diamond Engagement Nest Ring by Jennifer Yi
$15,550

My love for this ring knows no bounds. It's BIG and yet simple which is oh so lovely. I just know those little birds would love the life I would bring them on my finger. I would let them see the world...well sorta...they would see a lot of Ohio, but it would be just magical.

these birdies deserve this pretty packaging...

shop, "Light Flight to Heaven" click HERE. Her story is amazing just like the other pieces in her shop and you can definitely feel the rawness behind her work.

side note...can we love the name of her shop anymore????

This necklace makes me happy. Really happy.

Aquarius Constellation Pendant Necklace
$45

Check out Julie Nolan Jewelry's etsy shop HERE, and explore your own astrological constellation.

Now, this necklace is amazing by itself but it will also make a rad layering piece.

If you're fancy...and you know you are...you should pair it with a necklace or two. Please embrace layering people.

It's goooooood.

(Side note...go ahead and layer clothing while you're at it.)

Anyway, if you're feeling super fancy, I recommend choosing a necklace that is the color of your birthstone

...just to keep the earthy look going.

Confession...I'm kind of obsessed with this idea right now...

A Little Bit of Green-O in my Life

2011-04-26T17:11:00.303-04:00

Green is good.

We like green don't we?

When you say green these days nobody is thinking of the color they're thinking "yea! go green! Save the environment!" blah blah blah. That's all good and we love that, but I think green should be a color again...even if it's just for a day.

Here's some good green oldies pulling into the station again for 2011...

Let's start with avocado...

Here's how I remember it...in. a. kitchen. Yes it was popular before my time, but who's not familiar with a kitchen like this? Some of ya'll are still rockin' it so don't lie.

jumpsuit sold separately

Try this take on avocado in your home for 2011...

Check out artfire shop Robin's Egg Blue out of Cleveland, Ohio to find this avocado accent pillow out of vintage fabrics.

It's simple and sweet.

$45

Now let's not forget about the neon greens of the 80's... if I remember correctly...there was plenty of demand for hairspray, neon goodies, and acid washed jean skirts and jacket combos. The only thing missing from that list is leg warmers! Duh! when you wear a jean skirt and white pumps your legs are sure to get cold...well at least your calves are...evidently nobody cared about keeping your thighs warm...then again that's what pants are for... so I guess what I would call, "calf warmers" were in deed the perfect 80's accessory.

Now lets take the neon green of the 80's and punch it out for 2011. Check this handmade cuff out. The artist who makes these cuffs has a great process in making them especially for you. Read all about her and see what else she's selling at her shop getpersonalart found at artfire.com

$40

And then there was chartreuse. It does seem to be one shade of green that pops up more frequently. In the 50's ceramic "things" were popular and you'lI see them occasionally when i'm out rummaging through flea markets. I believe in soooo many ways that chartreuse can be amazing in many ways except for cars and horse sculptures...actually that's not fair...that piece would be unattractive in any color...in my opinion of course.

Let's go with this option available at etsy shop decoylab. It reminds me of my grandma's cuckoo clock from when I was growing up. (This version seems like it would be a little less noisy don't ya think...)

$34

Here's some miscellaneous green goodness I could not resist passing along.

my "silk green" mini cooper...I love you...I miss you

katy perry whoopin' it up in all green...
green hair is comin' to getcha' this season so watch out!

Happy Bun Bun Day!

2011-04-24T00:34:00.000-04:00

I found this re-dunk-a-dunk stuffed animal a couple weeks ago and thanks to my phone I didn't have to buy it in order to show you how funny this guy is.

ignore my non-manicured nails...sorry I can't figure out how to flip this either

I caught a couple of people looking oddly at me and so I had to roll my cart to the end of the isle...shoot this video real quick...roll on back...put the bunny up on the shelf...and then walk away meanwhile acting like nothing happened.

I'm becoming a pro at doing that...

Enjoy!

hi gertie girl!

I've been getting ready for the Springfield Extravaganza (May 20-22, 2011) and have neglected my blog.

(I have lots of pricing, packing, and other preparation to do, but i'm so excited and will show you soon what it's all about)

I'll be back bloggin in a few days.

Until then...say hi to Gertie!

And then there was cake...in-a-jar

2011-04-19T17:33:00.000-04:00

Is there no end to the goodness???!?? I was informed (after my pie-in-a-jar post) that there is also such a thing as cake-in-a-jar! If I find one more thing to bake in a jar... you all better watch out because i'm going to get my bake on!

I say watch out because I caught my microwave on fire last week and if that can go up in flames...then you can imagine what my baking skills are like.

p.s...you know what's terrible? my dad is a chef and has been so for 30+ years...I don't think he knows my skills are quite this bad...haha

I found this cool website called instructables which is, "a web-based documentation platform where passionate people share what they do and how they do it, and learn from and collaborate with others."

I'm going to explore it some more and share some good stuff in the coming weeks, but in the meantime check out some cake-in-a-jar "instructables" HERE by instructables member, scoochmaroo. (oh this site is soooo fun! I can hardly keep it under wraps until I have time to really explore it)

here's what you'll be looking at when you go the instructables website
...don't you just wanna click all over these exciting links!
look!
(I'm pretty sure that link in the middle says mini bacon cups ???)

Get your fruit here!

2011-04-13T22:29:00.000-04:00

I love a good canning jar don't you? Not because I personally can anything, but there's sooo much you can do with them!!! I have some I use as drinking glasses and they make me so happy!

So here's my story ...I came across a box of Ball jars in my garage the other day that I haven't even been opened!

Who does that???

So I got to thinkin' that I need to make a little somethin' somethin' out of these jars asap.

So like I do a million times a day...I filed it in my to-do Rolodex for a later date.

Two days later I came across etsy seller Let Them Eat Pie who makes "pie-in-a-jar." Yeah you heard me right...pie.in.a.jar.

$6.50 ea.

Have I been living under a rock??? It's blowin' my mind up!!!....all it took was one look and I was ready to bake a pie that even Betty Crocker would be jealous of. Then I remembered i've never baked a pie before and it's probably a good thing because then i'd have to eat it and while that sounds delightful...my thighs would disagree. So I bookmarked this seller because Paige (mini-pie-in-a-jar-lady) can make batches of them for events and I was sold even more at that point!!

You wanna know how the mini-pie-in-a-jar-lady got to where she is today?

"My business began when I started baking things when I should have been studying for the BAR to be a lawyer. I soon realized that I was baking more than I was studying, and my sugar tortes were getting more attention than my legal torts. All I could think of every night were ideas for different pies and how I could get them out to my friends who had since moved away. Out came the idea for these sweet treats in mini mason jars..."

(This makes me laugh...haha)

When I get married (at a barn party in the country) this is the dessert I want. Forget the wedding cake...puh-lease people! I love cake but lets get real...i'm not having a white, pristine cake in a barn out in the woods....i'm going to have pie-in-a-jar!!!!! Now all I need is a proposal...it's been 5 years...i'm not holding my breath...I might just do this for my next birthday party...or maybe just a "because I want to party." Who says I can't make my own rules? I'm an only child and last time i checked...making my own rules is the way I roll.

Moving on...I then just opened an email from Stampington & Co. and this is what I see as a fun project idea for the month...

You can see that these jelly jars are doing everything, but knocking me in the head to be blogged about. Soooo here I am...i'm doing it now, but I have more things to show and talk about when it comes to jelly jars so stay tuned...

Sooooo there's this blog called five finger poems. It's simple and brilliant and has a personality that's easy to fall for. The best part for me is that each time I check it out, I find myself on a creative... fast track to something really really good that 98% of the time never makes its silly self out of my cabeza.
___________________________
A five finger poem is a thought people share on the palm of their hand through ink (it's more meaningful than the way I just put it, but you get the basic idea...read on for more)

Here's an example I pulled from the five finger poems blog to make it clearer for those of us who are visual learners.

Check out what the blog's header says...
"FIRST THOUGHT, BEST THOUGHT. ALL POETRY REALLY NEEDS IS A SERIES OF WORDS YOU LIKE AND A PEN. SEND ME PHOTOS AND I'LL POST THEM. THE RULE: NO PAPER. EXTRA POINTS IF YOU CAN WRAP THE OUTSIDE WORLD INTO THE PIECE."

I find this all very charming. I enjoy this snapshot of a persons life...this is of course a person you may never know, but yet a person you can learn from and/or relate to...

Well, and...you know...
If nothing else, you can always download your own thoughts on your hand and share them in this anonymous way.

Enjoy!

I'm obsessing right now! Look at this...

FIVE ORIGINAL PAINTINGS BY TRACY MELTON $130

Here's whats going down...

Tracy...a full time artist out of one of my favorite places...Knoxville, Tennessee ya'll...cuts a tree down, slices the branches with a miter saw, sands and clear coats the pieces 3 times to accentuate the rings and seal the wood. They are then painted with liqua-tex acrylic paint, then clear coated again for a smooth glossy finish.

Are you flippin' kidding me right now???? This is what love at first sight is all about people! I gotta get my paws on these asap...by the way...i'm thinking you totally do too! Am I right or am I right????

You gotta check out ShopRuche.com!

This website in itself is worth perusing for inspiration, but underneath it all there is a magical little land of handmade goods (click on indie in the left column to go right on to it).

What's charming about this shop you ask?

The people (and the pup) runnin' the show!

the ruche team
I wonder who's the boss?

Ruche was created and designed in 2008 by Mai Olivo and Josh Olivo, with their furry companion Roji. The cute couple says,

"Through trial and error along with inspirations we have collected through the years, we molded Ruche into what it is today - "a vintage inspired boutique with a modern touch". Ruche is a collaboration of everything that has inspired us - fashion, photography, design, and lifestyle."

There's also a great story about them that's worth reading because we can all relate to our hobby creeping into every aspect of our lives...even onto our kitchen counter like the Olivo's.

pic courtesy of the new york times

Writing about that reminds me of the TV show The Middle, where the mom (Patricia Heaton) stores her grandmas comforter in the oven since she can't cook and needed some extra storage space. ha ha. Don't let that be you!

Anyway...have fun playing around at shopruche.com

For the love of a sassy frassy shoe...

Cesara Paciotti 2011 ~ price unlisted

I just can't seem to get enough of shoes and jewelry. I'm adding this pair to my imaginary shoe closet which I prefer to call a shoe "room." Since I probably couldn't walk far in these bad boys I would add them to my sitting pretty wardrobe. That's the spot where you'll find all of the shoes that i'd look damn good in while sitting on a bar stool. Don't worry....I won't get them sticky by dancing on the bar...i'll keep to the stool.

For a little extra funk i'd pair these pumps with this great pair of earrings I found at Hands Up Not Handouts. Their mission: "Women of the world make super cool stuff...we help sell it."

from the URUKUNDO COLLECTION $35
This is a handmade earring created using the traditional sweet grass basket weaving technique from Rwanda.
~fun fact: In Rwanda, yellow symbolizes unity~

I'm getting on my soap box for a minute here...standby...

I love Hands Up Not Handouts and just to give you an idea of what love goes in to making these earrings...look below...

(lots of colors available)

Please support not only local artists, but also women across the world who are learning to be self-sustaining.

I call this purposeful shopping! Have fun!

I found a new etsy shop owner today!!!!

Now to start...I'm not much of a portrait person...mainly because there's no one in particular I want looking at me as I walk through the house.

But! there is big news in the portrait world with artist Annamarie Cowart from Brooklyn, New York. You're going to find oodles of life in her portraits which makes me reconsider the whole term "portrait." I'm tossing aside the past thought of "portrait" which makes me think of great auntie Mables' wandering eyes and face mole from 1919...lovely I know.

this custom portrait is a 20x24 piece for $375

Anyway...Annamarie has a portrait series called "if I could be a superhero." I am in love with this idea and not just that...the bright colors and composition are to die for!

You've just gotta get this done for your favorite little person...or your husband for that matter...I'm sure he still thinks he's got a superman cape under his suit.

Have fun! Contact this artist HERE!

Movie Day

2011-03-25T23:05:00.000-04:00

Today I took a movie-mental-health day (mmhd)...(I just made that up, but feel free to use it...I think it's catchy.) I burrowed myself in my blankies and turned on some old black and white movies...just me and my pup pup...we had fun.

Yesterday, I had the windows open and it was soooo nice.

But not today! Nope. Today, i've got the heat back on and it's chilly willy the penguin outside!

After getting all settled...I decided to daydream waaaaaay far back to when the sun was out and the temp hung right around 70 degrees which for me is the perfect temperature...oh wait!...that was just yesterday...silly me...I guess I didn't have to travel so far back...(sometimes i'm a little over dramatic in my storytelling)

Hold the phone though...I am upping the excitement level (a lot) and mind-traveling to Hawaii thanks to the classic Burns and Allen movie, Honolulu.

I have to admit this is the first B&A movie i've seen...i'm talking about them like I know what i'm talking about but really I just know about them from their old radio show. I usually listen to it at night in front of the old wooden radio where pa sits smoking a pipe and ma is knitting and my siblings are listening intently on the floor just like me.

~Toot! Toot! All aboard!~

SS Lurline of the Matson Line
(this will make sense once you watch the
movie, but this is the ship they take to Hawaii)

So of course I need clothes, shoes, and accessories on my imaginary holiday. Here's what i'm thinking...

I must bring this recycled vinyl billboard bag I found at etsy shop seen1 where you can "be SEEN and join the recycling SCENE." People! I don't want sand all up in my bag so this will be per-fect!...it's bad enough when sand gets in your bathing suit...before you know it, you forget it's there and then you get in the shower 2 hours later and all of the sudden...the sand and falls out looking all like shoop shoop shoopy doopy in the shower...(what? too graphic?) Anyway...point is...I don't need a bag that gets sand in it...moving on...

$35
...you're kidding me!!!! what a good deal!!!!
buy this up and all the other goodies

As a part of my traveling agenda...I want to be able to go anywhere and do anything at the drop of a dime. How can I do that fashionably? Pack a convertible wrap dress from etsy shop CoralieBeatrix.

doheny vintage lime lux
convertible wrap dress $79.99

I love this lime color and that this dress can go from strapless to backless in a matter of minutes! What more could a girl ask for?

Oh I know! maybe a pair of earrings, sandals, and a bathing suit I can wear under my dress just in case I get the urge to jump in the water. Yup that'll do it...

$45 by etsy shop elizabethlydonstudio...
wouldn't these earrings look amazing with

My day today~

...the windows were a open...the fresh air was a flowin'...and I was a singin' away in the kitchen.

Side note to my dear friends and family...do not be alarmed...I wasn't washing dishes by hand...or baking away dinner from scratch in the oven...or even hanging clothes on the wire outside for that matter.

What was I doing besides singing you ask? I was loading up the dishwasher...putting an already made lasagna in the oven...and not doing laundry. Times have really changed no?

I did however! take the time to imagine myself in a kitchen like this...

wearing an apron like this...

vintage sweet strawberry apron $25

and goodies at
etsy shop CoffeeKlatch

(I know, I know, don't worry my shoes don't match my imaginary kitchen either)

...and serving a grouping of not so handmade Hostess Sno-Balls (haha no really i'm no baker). I found purple ones at the grocery today and I've never seen them in purple and so they caught my eye on the pronto. Just as a heads up! I cannot even find a picture online of the purple ones and they are only out this time of the year so get on it and get some before they're gone!

(I wonder if once you do get your hands on some if you can freeze them and save them for a summer tea party? hmm...even if they don't freeze well they'll still look the same and you won't have to worry because nobody will eat them anyway right?)

green sno balls...imagine them in purple
...so purty

I hate coconut and so from an edibility standpoint i'm not chowing down on these, but they would be so cute on a little platter (like the one below) served to your guests at your next tea party whether it's in the spring/summer. Just a thought...don't invite the Queen...the Jones'...or the Seavers.

My mother-in-law-ish (my boyfriend and I are "common law" in an non common law state...ha) had a birthday the other day and since we...well... I left the the gift making to the last minute...my love said "get her a gift card". I explained as I always do...we don't do gift cards in this house...dir.

His mom and I have lots in common and we had an instant connection when we met years ago. I love those moments! I liiiiive for those moments. My hope is that everyone has that happen every now and again.

Anyhow...one of the things we love... other than crafting... is magazines. For 2011 my goal is to get rid off all magazine subscriptions I have except for the ones I can't read online...I can justify anything when necessary. This is super hard because I love cutting cool stuff out and saving it...and loving it...and awwwing over it forever. But! I'm solving that by sharing fun finds on this blog.

That being said! I know she's doing the same things but it's her birthday!!!! All rules go out the window on b-days! So we got her a subscription to Country Gardens. Instead of putting the purchase confirmation in a card...I went shopping in my art room for some gift wrap inspiration. I had 5 minutes to put something together and since i'm not matchy mary matcherson. I grabbed stuff and went with it. Here's what I came up with...

Pretty Pretty Princess

2011-03-14T16:15:00.001-04:00

this is the actual 1990's version we had...
this pic was not easy to find but, I did it!

Kendall is my very best friend from preschool and this year we turned 28...me in January and her in February. (Unfortunately we live far away from each other and so while we couldn't celebrate together I was excited to see her birthday party pics on facebook.)

We like a good "theme" party on occasion...especially if we get to dress up...i'm talking cocktail dress and jewels...not war reenactment dress up. So I was not surprised to see Kendall had a "Pretty Pretty Princess" themed birthday party. She's just the type of girl to have such a party thrown for her. On the menu...cupcakes, cocktails, and mini, white powdered doughnuts. On her...a pink mash up of glamour...oh and a tutu.

kendall is sitting on her tu-tu...haha no really she's wearing one
I just love this picture and wanted to use it

Soooo in honor of princesses of all ages...get your birthday girl the tutu of all tutu's at etsy shop TutuLand. I was going to keep this post "pink" by adding a picture of a pink tutu from TutuLand, but I laid my eyes on this tutu set and I couldn't go any further.

I Wear My Sunglasses At Night

2011-03-14T05:02:00.000-04:00

Dir who doesn't???

I'm kidding...I don't...I'm not of that caliber...don't worry, I'm not crying over it.

Here's some lovely sunglass wearing ladies that paved the way for Lady Gaga, Be-yo-yo, and my favorite meatball, Snooks to rock it on out.

Audrey Hepburn leaving starbucks

Ms. Monroe "front row tickets at this
Jay-Z concert was a bad idea"

and the ever so lovely Jackie O,
"extra catchup please, thank you"

Did you notice these 3 style icons are wearing their sunglasses in the daytime??? What the what?

Now it's time to confess something...I'm a people watcher. Not like a peeping tom so don't freak out...more like a sitting at a cafe outdoors watching each passersby. People are interesting to observe no?

by the way...I google imaged flock of seagulls
and a pic of kate gosselin came up...hehe

Anyway needless to say wearing sunglasses allows you to check out the dude to the left with the flock of seagulls hairdo without the awkward conversation of..."what? who me? no I was looking over here."

...oh yeah and I hear they protect your eyes from the sun...blah blah blah whatever.

What's must be concluded? Those ladies didn't have wondering eyes at night like these famous ladies do today...

gaga "I can't believe I got gum on my
shoes again...i'm out of here"

be-yo-yo "is my underwear
hanging out the bottom of these shorts?"

snooks "...bling bling tiiiiiiiime"

Since I believe sun/no sun glasses are the best accessorie...and yet your style is somewhere between Audrey and Snooks...get yourself a pair of vintage frames from etsy shop BibbysRocket and do your own thang. I'll vote for being "you" every time. But! there's no harm in taking some inspiration from fashionistas every now and again. Here's my favorite middle ground. A vintage spectacle adorned with a little bit of jazz.

Foster Grants from the old school hollywood days $44

Mayday! mayday! alert! alert! : Do not bling out your blueblockers like snooki and then get behind the wheel...
