The Inherited Body – În umbra Dochiei

2025-09-05T01:44:00.002+03:00

The Inherited Body – In the Shadow of Dochia

This is a series of nudes created exclusively on medium format film to preserve the fragility and sacredness of the photographic act and to emphasize the materiality of time – the visual grain becomes mythological dust, and the light, a remnant of a once-living presence.

The photographs explore the metamorphosis of the woman within a life marked by Eastern European archetypes, subtly yet persistently transmitted through family, tradition, and silence. The film becomes the witness of an initiation: the body traverses childhood, the ritual of marriage, motherhood, and, finally, dissolution.

The frozen, cyclical landscape suggests a liminal space where past and present blend, and the body becomes a vessel of memory, history, and absence. The mythological figure of Dochia hovers in the background as a primordial presence — these are inherited roles, all coexisting in a single body – not chosen, but passed down, where individuality melts into myth.

The series takes this mythological layer and transfers it into the contemporary woman's body. Dochia's myth becomes a narrative framework for the woman's initiatory path, a metaphor for the pressure of tradition on feminine identity, subjected to the rhythms of nature and culture, a shadow that the past casts upon the present body, and a symbol of a transgenerational corporeal memory.

As in the legend of Dochia, the woman in these images climbs a symbolic mountain: she sheds her social masks until she disappears – not as a loss, but as a merging with the earth, with tradition, with those who came before her. The narrative thus becomes a visual meditation on feminine identity as an act of continuity, dissolution, and reconstitution.

1. Mlădiță (Sprout)

A young, delicate presence, surrounded by the raw green of a childhood about to fade, seems to turn toward a lost origin. The only living element in an inert landscape — the branches of a forming identity symbolize childhood as a state of fusion with nature, with instinct — an image of potential, of hope, but also of vulnerability.

The image captures a state of suspension between what was and what might become. At this point of departure, at the beginning of the journey, she is not defined by who she is but by all the possibilities she contains. The photograph subtly questions the implications of this rite of passage, tensing the relationship between personal identity and collective normativity.

2. Miră (Bride)

The figure of the bride is a space of transition where the body becomes both subject and object of tradition, and the woman becomes a silent symbol of surrender. The physical posture evokes fragility, resignation, and submission, a tension between the desire for self-assertion and the acceptance of a predetermined role. This subtle, almost theatrical gesture amplifies the state of liminality – a symbolic threshold where the being is suspended between the freedom of youth and the constraints of the role imposed by tradition.

The white veil, a symbol of purity, social submission, and ritual transformation, acts as a mask of metamorphosis: it does not conceal but redefines. It is not decorative here but marks a social initiation – a symbolic blindness of one's own will. The bride is not a specific person but a function in a cultural cycle – a ceremonial step in the loss of the individual self in favor of social continuity. The traditional costume's motifs indicate cultural belonging, but also the pressure of the feminine model passed from generation to generation.

In this context, the image is not a celebration but a reflection on the fragility and strength required to accept a predestined fate.

3. Mumă (Mother)

In this image, the maternal figure sits like a domestic deity, placed at the center of an invisible altar. Her own face disappears, while that of the past is solemnly displayed – not as a physical presence, but as an embodied memory, represented by a static object suspended between memory and identity.

The framing, axial composition, and restrained gesture contribute to an almost sacrificial portrayal. The body, still and wrapped in a rigid silence, evokes less a woman and more a relic of a living myth, born not from desire but from the need for continuity – a contemporary Dochia, bearer of tradition and transgenerational burdens.

This presence is the result of a silent ritual of identity sacrifice. The woman no longer has her own face but wears the mask of a role passed down through an unbroken line of expectations. Each generation spins the same thread; thus, she is no longer a self but a symbol. The woman's identity dissolves in favor of a collective entity, an identity shaped by tradition and social expectations.

This photograph is not just a portrait – it is a desacralized icon – within it, the entire genealogy is visible, but the individual can no longer be seen.

4. Soroc (The Appointed Time)

A hunched, faceless silhouette seems to melt into a gesture of surrender – a metaphor for the end of the self: in place of a real woman remains only an archetype. The posture, devoid of force or will, with a near-ritual fatigue, evokes not just the end of a life but the dissolution of personal identity into the ancestral pattern of inherited femininity.

The woman becomes anonymous; she is no longer seen but disappears – merging with the red chair, a symbol of sacrifice, of consumed passion, and of tradition that does not forgive, the eternal witness to a completed function. Her role is fulfilled. The figure becomes pure form – a body without a face, without a personal story. Only the shape remains, the memory, the absence.

This woman is not the first and will not be the last. She belongs to a ritualistic chain where her personal life matters only inasmuch as it can carry forward a legacy. Her death is merely a passing of the torch, a disappearance into a structure older than herself – that of "the woman who must."

The image closes the circle and simultaneously reopens it. Death is not a definitive end but a return to the cultural womb from which other sprouts, other brides, other mothers will be born.

The eternal return.

The Fog

2018-12-31T22:01:00.001+02:00

After studying art for seven years at a local university, I began my career as a professional photographer. For a long time, my work was dedicated exclusively to fine art photography. More recently, I became increasingly drawn to documentary photography while photographing the final years of my grandfather’s life — a deeply personal project that slowly became both an act of observation and an act of love.
This experience changed the way I understand photography. It taught me to look more closely at the quiet gestures of everyday life, at vulnerability, routine, ageing, and the invisible weight carried by a person near the end of life. It also strengthened my connection to documentary photography, a genre I now feel profoundly attached to.

This short photo essay follows an ordinary day in the life of my grandfather, in his home in western Romania, where he lived for the last fifty years. The house itself carries a history larger than our family: it is one of the first railway station buildings in the country, built in 1858. My grandfather spent his working life on the railways, and in his later years he remained inside this old station house, surrounded by the traces of a world defined by waiting.
I first photographed him in 2009, without thinking of it as a serious project. At that time, I was simply enjoying his presence. At the end of August 2015, I returned to him as a subject, with a clearer need to preserve what was slowly disappearing.
The house became part of the story. Its courtyard, old roof tiles, bare winter branches, dark doorways, simple rooms, worn furniture, and filtered light formed the quiet landscape of his final years. In the photographs, his figure sometimes appears almost transparent, reflected in glass or absorbed by shadow, as if he were already moving between presence and memory. The former station, once connected to travel and distance, had become the still centre of his world.
Once a week, on Monday afternoons, he prepared to shave. The radio played loudly in the kitchen, usually Romanian folk music, while he arranged his shaving items on the table with the precision of a small ceremony. The objects had been the same for as long as I could remember: a traditional razor, a shaving brush, shaving cream made from soap and water in a plastic sour cream cup, a towel, an old newspaper spread across the table, and the black wooden box in which everything was kept.
The only object missing was the mirror. He no longer needed it. Over the years, he had become almost completely blind after refusing an operation that could have partially restored his eyesight.
The ritual could last up to an hour. He would lean close to the table, feeling for each object with his hands. He would pause to react to a sound, to listen to the news, or to exchange a few words with his wife. Then he would continue, slowly and meticulously checking his face by touch, stretching the skin with one hand and guiding the razor with the other. His hands, marked by age, became his way of seeing.
There was a fragile dignity in this routine. The gesture was practical, but also intimate and almost ceremonial — a way of maintaining order, self-respect, and identity in a life that had become increasingly limited. After shaving, he placed every item back into the black wooden box I had always loved. Then he would remain for a while in the kitchen or return to his bedroom, listening to the radio. During the day, he never turned on the television.
Most of his time was spent indoors. He no longer wanted to go outside. He suffered from severe depression and panic attacks, and described his condition as being permanently trapped in a heavy fog. In the photographs, this fog becomes visible through blurred movement, deep shadows, empty rooms, and the harsh light that cuts across his face or falls on the wall beside him.
In the late evenings, after dinner, he was always in his bedroom, listening to the television beside his wife of fifty-eight years. On the walls behind them hung framed photographs of his children: a son he lost young, and my mother as a teenager. The radio during the day and the television in the evening and at night became his only forms of entertainment, his connection to a world he no longer wished to enter.

This project is not only a portrait of my grandfather, but also a meditation on ageing, memory, blindness, solitude, and the tenderness hidden inside ordinary domestic rituals. It is about the slow fading of a body, the persistence of habit, and the fragile ways in which love remains present even when words become few. It is also about a man who once belonged to the railway — to movement, schedules, and distances — spending his final years in a former station house, almost completely still, listening to the world from inside.
My grandfather passed away peacefully at the age of ninety-five.
