The scholarship is designated for members of the honors program who plan to study at another school or in another country during the spring, summer or fall of next year, Pam Bowen, honors program assistant, said.

Bowen said junior or senior members of the honors program are eligible to apply. Students must have a GPA of at least 3.3, and preference is given to applicants with no prior study abroad experience. Scholarship winners must complete the study abroad program within two semesters of accepting the award.

Applicants are required to submit a two-page essay describing their proposed study abroad program and the ways they think study abroad would enhance their education. An official transcript and any available program literature should accompany the essay, and the completed application must be turned into the Center for Academic Excellence on or before Nov. 5.

The domestic scholarship winner will receive a $500 award, and the recipient of the study abroad scholarship will be awarded $1,000.

Students interested in studying abroad or participating in the National Student Exchange should visit Mary Moore in the Center for Academic Excellence.

It's just not going to happen.

Since the metro is closed from 1 to 6 a.m., and Madrid is infamous for its citizens' undying love for nightlife (just ask Hemingway), you're better off staying for a few more dances until 6 and going out for some churros con chocolate, or maybe, if it's close enough, just walking. Traffic jams at 5 a.m. are all too common in Madrid.

Despite the necessary adjustment to a late-night schedule, studying abroad in Madrid was a wonderful experience; I'd particularly recommend it if you're looking for a change from the fast-paced New York lifestyle. Madrileños tend to move slower, and by the end of the semester, you may find yourself scoffing at your fellow Americans for not sitting over a meal for two hours.

The number of tiny cafes and tapas bars in Madrid is impressive, and sometimes you get free wine with your menú del día (a fixed appetizer, main course and dessert), usually the most economical way to eat. Spain is a meat-loving country, so vegetarians will have a more difficult time finding desirable options, but it can be done.

When you're deciding whether to choose between an NYU apartment or a homestay, really think about what you want your living experience to be. Living with a family is a good option if you really need to work on your language skills, as you'll be speaking Spanish with them at home.

But I lived in an apartment, which gave me more freedom to have guests and keep late hours. Still, my roommates and I spoke English all the time, which didn't particularly help a struggling Spanish speaker.

Brave students with superior language skills could also venture out and choose their own place without NYU's help, living with Spanish roommates. One girl in my program managed to find a house on the outskirts of Madrid with nine European roommates. It was a great way for her to make friends outside of the program and become more immersed in the culture.

Although it can be tempting to head out for a night of club-hopping with 15 new friends from the NYU program, Madrileños will most likely avoid your group of loud, English-speaking students. To really mingle with locals, it's best to head out with only a few friends.

The campus in Madrid is small - just two buildings, with a quaint little courtyard in between. It's in a nice neighborhood surrounded by some small cafes and a random TGI Friday's. But there is a good chance you'll have a bit of a commute, since only a few apartments are located nearby.

Classes are very focused on Spain and Spanish. There aren't as many options in Madrid as there are in London or Florence to take basic, general classes. But the classes there do help you learn a lot about the country and its culture, and there are definitely ways to make it fit into your schedule. I managed to finish my language requirement and a couple of Morse Academic Plan courses, while simultaneously receiving lessons in wine-tasting and watching classic Spanish films.

Finally, don't expect to find that early-morning coffee fix on the go quite as easily as you do at home. Coffee for Madrileños is usually a sit-down, pleasurable experience to be shared with friends. When you order it to go, you may be faced with a confused Spaniard looking at you like you are slightly insane. But never fear, New Yorkers: Here and there, even Madrid has Starbucks.

This is about 25 per cent of all the universities in the US. This includes universities like University of Berkeley, Duke, University of Virginia among others. Until about two years ago, a score in the Test of English as Foreign a Language (TOEFL) was the only accepted English language proficiency test score accepted by universities in the US.

"This is a good news for students as they now have a wider geography to choose from and do not necessarily have to write multiple tests. This certainly reduces the pressure and the load on the students," says Jaideep Singh Chowdhary of Triumphant Institute of Management Education (T.I.M.E), who trains students in IELTS and TOEFL examination.

Till a year ago, between 300-400 US universities accepted IELTS scores, but with more and more employers and educational institutions accepting IELTS scores, the universities too have started accepting the same.

IELTS is an English language proficiency test that is required to be taken by non-native students for study in countries where the medium of instruction is English.

The test is accepted by universities in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, apart from the US. Students who wish to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate or vocational training courses in Australia have to mandatorily take the IELTS to be granted a student visa. The TOEFL is not accepted in Australia.

The IELTS is jointly assessed and run by the British Council, the Cambridge University, and IDP Australia, an organisation owned by Australian universities that promotes education in Australia. The IELTS comprises sections on all the four language skills viz- listening, speaking, reading and writing. The IELTS assesses a candidate on a band scale of one to nine. Universities in Australia, England etc, typically require a band score of 6 and more.

In the last year, around 1.2 lakh Indians took IELTS examination and around 75,000 students too the TOEFL examination. Since more number of students opt to pursue profession or studies in the Commonwealth countries, more of them take the IELTS examination.

Study abroad programs offer many valuable gifts to students who participate, and those who choose to join the program are excited and look forward to the trip. Being in a new and unfamiliar city can be a very enchanting experience, for more than the cultural differences.

The newest destination for the FC students will be Paris, France in the spring of 2008. Students will be able to study in the city of lights, and explore all of the hisstory and grandeur of France itself.

Studying abroad allows people to understand different cultures and open up their horizons, while they are able to develop maturity and become more independent. This is a wonderful lesson that books cannot teach.

The academic and cultural effects of studying abroad on participants are remarkable. By adding a diverse education and experience like going to a foreign country to learn for four months to the academic process, a trip like this makes you discover some personality traits that you didn't know you had.
It is a great opportunity to immerse your self in a foreign country, learning and observing the people and their customs. Participants might find the first weeks very challenging and experience a bit of a cultural shock. Being an abroad student myself, it is easy to say that studying abroad is a life changing experience but students have to participate in order to gain that experience. Without any hesitation most would recommend studying abroad to other students.

Two teachers will deliver the courses to the students in France next spring. Instructor Roger See from Fullerton College will offer several history classes including: U.S. History: Special Emphasis on the French Role in the American Revolution, American Neutrality in the French Revolution, and Relations with Napoleon and France Through the Civil War.

Two other classes about western civilization will also be offered by See, one of them emphasizing on the France's role in the development of modern Europe. The other instructor making the trip is a teacher from Cypress College, Stuart Rosenberg. Rosenberg will offer some different English classes such as Critical Thinking and Writing about Literature, Creative Writing, The Film and Humanities and the Arts.

Of course, French language classes will be available for all students. The program will also be offering classes that are taught exclusively in French, for those students who are advanced language learners.

For those who are interested in the program, here are some of the important facts to know before signing up. The application process is a little involved but it begins with the application packet that needs to be filled out by each participant. The packet consists of a registration form, the $400 dollar deposit that is required, and a transcript request form. Financial aid is available to those who are unable to pay the deposit.

In order to complete the application, participants need to have completed a minimum of 12 semester units. This requirement includes English 100 or the equivalent, along with a GPA of 2.5 by the semester before departing for Paris.

Participants are also required to write a one-page letter describing two specific goals that they would like to accomplish during their experience abroad, and to go into detail about how they would like to accomplish these goals.

Are you interested? Find more information, click the study abroad website link (listed below) where the application forms can be downloaded. Those who are interested can also find links to many websites providing additional information, testimonies from previous participants, and interesting tips on how to prepare and live the experience in the best possible way.

Future destinations of the Fullerton College study abroad program include Athens, Greece in the summer of 2008 and Rome, Italy for fall of 2008.

With all of these wonderful travel opportunities available, it is something that should not be missed by anyone.

If you want to study abroad in France, there are no shortage of opportunities. France offers the best of everything -- amazing city life as well as rustic countrysides. This country is rich in colorful heritage and offers an amazing plethora of things for students to see and do.

No matter what your area of study is, you can find a program for study abroad in France. Paris is one of the most beloved tourist destination as well as a great place to study international law, business, art, architecture, fashion design, and much more! However, Paris certainly isn't the only French city where students can expand their education. Grenoble, Nice and Dijon are more examples of places where you can study abroad in France.

Both high school students and college students alike can study abroad in France. One popular program that many students choose is a language immersion program. This involves living in France as a native does and communicating strictly in French. Often, high school students that choose to study abroad in France either go for the summer, or directly after graduation before heading to college.

Studying abroad gives students amazing real-world experience that college admissions agents, as well as possible employers, love to see in an applicant. Only a small percentage of students choose to study abroad, which sets them apart from the herd when it comes to college and employment applications.

France is filled with no shortage of fun things for students to do after they're done learning for the day. See the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, or do some people watching at an outdoor café. Dance all night at one of France's many nightclubs, or have some wholesome fun and see the animals at the national zoo. Take a Sunday cruise down the picturesque Seine, or shop til you drop at one of France's famous boutiques. Oh, and there's always Disneyland Paris! To garner the greatest results from the experience, though, it’s important to select a university with strong academic credentials and a competitive course of study.

Whether your preference is to study in Australia, New Zealand or Fiji, the university systems of this region more than meet these requirements. Additionally, there are many study abroad programs from which to choose. Students may decide to study in New Zealand or other locations for a shorter-term summer program, a semester, a year or even for the duration of a full degree program. For those seeking to round their academic qualifications even more, there are even internship programs from which to choose. The wide selection of programs makes it easy to meet almost any academic or scheduling goals.

What Are the Benefits of Studying in Australia, New Zealand or Fiji?

Most study abroad programs share basic benefits. These programs are a distinctive addition to college applications and resumes. Electing to study in New Zealand, Australia or Fiji carries these additional benefits for students:

•Exposure to a rich and diverse culture – Classroom experience as well as downtime in a study abroad program provides numerous opportunities to experience diverse cultures, traditions and social norms. In addition, the cultures and history of these nations share similarities with that found in North America. As a result, students gain the cultural insight afforded by international travel while enjoying the commonalities of our shared heritage. Students studying in Australia or throughout the South Pacific obtain a broadened perspective on the world as well as a more grounded perspective of their place in it.

•Outstanding educational opportunities—The region boasts internationally recognized degree programs and a world class university system. Students enrolling in study abroad program in Australia, New Zealand or Fiji are privy to some of the finest courses of study in an established, respected academic setting.

•No language obstacles -- Since English is the predominant language in the region, extensive language study is not a prerequisite of study in Australia, New Zealand or Fiji. Classes are taught in English, and coursework and testing is done in English. Students are free to focus on soaking up the experience rather than worry about the accuracy of translating it.

•Breathtaking surroundings – One of the more striking benefits of choosing to study in New Zealand, Australia or Fiji is exposure to some of the most unique surroundings on the planet. Whether you are drawn to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, volcanoes in New Zealand or the pristine landscapes of Fiji, the region offers students the finest of educations in an unforgettable setting.
