Recently, I was walking by a playground of children playing in Paris, France. The sounds of the play could have been happening in China, Holland, or Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Because the fact is, all children are wired for play. It’s one of the universal drives inherent in human nature.

In fact, one of the MOST important truths about play is that it serves the individual developmental needs of each child.

Yep, it’s not ONLY about “fun” — it’s about developing crucial skills and learning.

Think about it. Children are born knowing how to play:

A three-month-old baby sees an object of interest and follows it with eyes.

A six month old baby sees an object of interest and reaches for it.

A nine month old holds an object of interest and passes it back and forth from one hand to another.

A twelve month old sees an object of interest and crawls to it or pulls up on a coffee table to grab it.

Interest drives development.

We intuitively know and understand that babies' interests are driving the development of important fine and gross motor skills. We delight in their delight.

What I find so fascinating is that we abandon this notion as young children become more articulate.

Why is a four year-old’s interest in play no longer important?

Why are we asking kindergarteners to sit still in their chairs and listen without becoming restless?

Where in the heck did we get the idea that worksheets are better for a budding mind than play?

Yes. I hear some of you saying that a four year-old can count, whereas a 3 month-old can not.

This is true — but does it mean that we should ignore interest?

The truth is that PLAY is what develops a child’s physical, emotional and mental growth.

And if you observe children at play – you can see the cognitive development in motion, and you can also observe how their individual developmental needs are served by their unique interests:

A four year-old sees a peg in styrofoam and picks up the mallet and pounds it deep into the styrofoam. A fascination with force arises out of an interest in play.

A five year-old is obsessed with superheroes. She goes to the art center to create a superhero shield. A love of designing and constructing play props arises out of an interest in play.

A six year-old is deeply fascinated by insects. He asks his teacher for a blank book so he can write and illustrate a book for his friends. A passion for writing arises out of an interest in play.

It is here, in the child’s interest, that we are given an undeniable force to scaffold and facilitate the remarkable — to shape the future!

We don’t know exactly how a child’s play interests will someday translate into the contributions they make to the world, but we can be the springboard that provides them EVERY opportunity to pursue what makes them special and unique.

Watch. What interests are driving the growth of the children who are in your care? Remember that YOU play a crucial part in the unfolding of their life.

Interest… play… WONDER. These are the most powerful forces of growth in human beings.

As a Wonder Warrior, never forget that YOU are shaping the future.

Phew! It's finally time to say goodbye to 2020. It brought so many curve balls. It was exhausting and yet, there were gifts as well. It was amazing to see the incredible passion and inspiration from early childhood educators worldwide as they had to pivot their teaching practice.

I have created this free masterclass series to take you through my yearly process of beginning the new year. The new year is an exciting and potent time. This year there is definitely more to reflect on. I am so ready to bid 2020 good bye and move into fresh possibilities. I know for myself – I didn't want to step over looking back.

There are three steps to my process:

You can jump to downloading the journal as it will walk you through the steps. If anything seems unclear or you do not understand the question or reflection – I have created videos walking you through the process step by step. Enjoy!

STEP ONE: Every year I take time to reflect on the last 12 months. As a reflective educator, it helps me to take an eagle’s view. This year, more than ever, it felt important to take a look back.

STEP TWO: Next, after looking back, I turn and look forward. What is calling me? What’s next? Where do I want to spend my time? I lean into the possibilities for the next year. In this video I guide you through a process of unpacking what’s next.

STEP THREE: I have given up the practice of New Year Resolutions. Instead, I choose a word-of-the-year. I have been doing this for over a decade and it is a profound process. In this video I guide you through my process.

DOWNLOAD the journal with all of the prompts and more! Click here!

Let me know your word-of-the-year below in the comments!

Social distancing is just wrong in early childhood. You know it. I know it. But what if you are mandated to do it?

Recently, I was on a Zoom call, and an educator told us about her colleagues who had made taped squares in their rooms. In those squares they put a chair with a plastic box of materials to play with. I nearly jumped through the Zoom screen. “Are you kidding me?!”

Children deserve better from us than this. I get it. It is hard. But taped squares? Are we that limited on creativity?

It is time to be WARRIORS of Wonder, my friends. The children are calling our names and it is time to step up and deliver WONDER, no matter the circumstance. NO TAPED BOXES. How would you feel? One of my mottos around anything I do and provide for children: How would I feel if this were being offered to me? I will forever be in gratitude to the Reggio Emilia Approach for the truth that children are full citizens NOW. Not at 18 years old. Now.

How can we bring joy and wonder in social distancing? The reduction of materials?

Be innovative with how you establish isolation areas. Look for materials outside of our industry.

Stop thinking “isolation space” and start thinking “play invitation.”

Engage with what you set up. Sit down on the ground and play with your play invitation. How does it feel? How can you make it even more wonder-filled?

IDEAS I HAVE HAD:

OIL DRIP PANS

Oil drip pans are a staple in my classroom. These are so versatile and economical to buy. They are great for magnet play. AND they are big and offer amazing wonder-filled spaces for play!

Look at the way the oil pan provides a little reflective quality. Doesn't this feel better than a taped square? Oh my gosh! We should outlaw taped squares. Children deserve more than that.

Need block materials that can be cleaned? I love translucent plastic cups in bright joyful colors. They come small as shot glasses, in fluted shapes and even jumbo size!

BOOT TRAYS

I have always used boot trays to set up small worlds. And now, they make amazing isolated play spaces. Boot trays come in so many different styles – from copper to sturdy molded plastic. They are made to endure the wear and tear of daily use.

When you think “play invitation” instead of “isolation area”, the possibilities open up! Bring your A-game! Be a Warrior of Wonder!

You can even use a boot tray or oil pan for two children by putting a child at each end. This allows for socializing.

You can set up any play invitation on a boot tray or oil pan – even dramatic play!

BATH MATS

Bath mats are another incredible play surface that often gets overlooked. For infants and toddlers, it provides a wonderful change of texture and tactile experience. It is another great way to establish play areas.

Bath mats are super easy to clean, roll up, and store. You can often find them at very economical prices.

Just like the oil pans and boot trays – you can use bath mats anywhere in the classroom you need to establish a safe play space.

Remember – early childhood educators teach for the child, not the circumstance.

You got this!

To enter this center – we walked up some stairs and arrived in this open aired space. I love how Mia created this outdoor space with all of the essentials of outside play!

Water play is a must!

This is wonder-filled!! I was so impressed that Mia offered mud play in a space that is not connected to access to nature. This is amazing! Mud kitchens can happen even if you do not have access to nature.

So much goodness here. Love the mortar and pestles!

There is true beauty of mud play.

In the center of the building – the atelier situated in an open aired courtyard. A wonderful collection of loose parts for creating artful self-portraits!

The presentation of the materials is so simple and inviting. Oh the possibilities!

I love how the children are re-decorating, re-conceptualizing the plastic dollhouse. Re-purposing is a powerful model for children to partake in. And look at the sparkles on the canvas!

A shelf holding offerings of art materials and loose parts for creating. Everything has been placed so thoughtfully and intentionally in beautiful containers.

This is such an awesome idea for displaying children's work. Buying a bunch of different sized bulletin boards and attaching clothespins to hold the work! Easy and effective.

Notice the jenga blocks with the children on them! What an incredible play invitation. I also love the simple cardboard frames the children painted for the family photos to the left!

This is a spectacular play dough play invitation! Look at all the possibilities! I think one of the hallmarks of an incredible play invitation is a variety of materials and textures. I love the wood and metal bowls plus the variety of loose parts.

Another wonder invitation to play!

I just love this paint provocation with different recycled materials attached inside a large cardboard box lid. When we demonstrate the possibilities of reusing packaging as an art canvas – we open up a child's use of resources at home.

This blew me away! Look at how well utilized these folding doors are?! Brilliant!

This was such a stunning display in a hallway of the children's self-portraits.

Thank you so much Mia for sharing your space with Fairy Dust Teaching. You are an incredible testimony to the power of wonder based teaching! Your center is truly a place of wonder!

Do you feel you do not have the space in your classroom for an atelier? All it takes is one shelf. You could call it a mini-atelier.

The word “Atelier” comes from the French word meaning the studio or workshop.
It is a place for children to create, imagine, play and construct.

An atelier is a space dedicated to providing children materials for original thinking and art making. It is an opportunity to share special techniques of art making with children so that they have more access to expressing their ideas and thoughts. .

What is the difference between an atelier and an art center?

Atelier is more of a laboratory for creative exploration. When you think of your atelier as a place for children to research and experiment – it is not so much about the making of an art “product” as it is about the discovery of mediums and materials as a means to expressing ideas.

An art center can certainly be this.

But historically – it has been a place to create an end product. The word “Atelier” reminds me of the intention of the space. An atelier can be a way of approaching problems and creating solutions. It can be a place of experiencing wonder. It can become a dialogue between materials and the children. It can be an expansion of the way children communicate their feelings and ideas.

Is a shelf enough?

As a public school teacher, there were times I felt confined by my small classroom. Looking at the wondrous ateliers of Reggio Emilia – I felt I could never provide this kind of experience for my students.

But as a practicing artist (I went to art school before becoming an educator) I knew creative materials could make a huge impact on children's self-expression. Something was better than nothing. I am not in Reggio Emilia. I am where I am. I create from my place, my space, my time.

Start small and keep it simple.

What are the children drawn to? Painting? Mark making? Building?

One shelf ateliers are living, changing spaces. They are not stagnant. Each of these one shelf ateliers can have new materials appear as the children expand their ideas and exploration.

Be willing to move and change what the shelf offers according to the children's interests.

Below are three very simple one shelf ateliers.

The Color Atelier

The three main steps to setting up a one shelf atelier:

There are three main elements I feel are important to setting up an effective atelier.

Set up the materials with attention and care. Arrange the materials with beauty and intention. Does the shelf invite participation? Does the arrangement beckon you to touch? Do the children naturally navigate to it? Are the materials easy to access and use?

Provide quality materials and tools. When you can – buy high quality. For example, cheap watercolors produce weak colors. Paint on thin paper weakens the paper. Test the materials to experience the journey they provide. Is it satisfying? Do they bring curiosity and wonder as you explore? If they are not engaging you – how do you think they could possibly engage the children?

Look beyond the typical. Provide unexpected materials and resources. Think beyond the typical early childhood art center. For myself – thinking of it as a laboratory for children to research and experiment helps me move beyond the traditional view of the art center and into a more dynamic space.

In my Waldorf training, the young child's development of the fine motor skills was viewed as more important than teaching rote skills(such as recognizing the sounds of the letters). The hand can be considered as an instrument of intelligence. Philipp Martzog, a researcher, found that better fine motor skills in the early years might have a direct relationship to higher intelligence level and specifically – deductive thinking. His findings pointed to the relationship between fine motor skills and flexibility in the thinking.

Fine motor skills is how young children develop cognitive abilities in early childhood. It is why we call it “hands-on” learning.

Perhaps the development of fine motor skills is far more important than just the ability to use pencils and markers. The hand is the first tool young children have to express their thoughts and ideas. In the Waldorf schools, the development of the hand includes finger knitting in kindergarten and actually knitting in first grade. I found in my kindergarten, children found deep satisfaction with learning how to finger knit and making bracelets.

I think it is worth giving children many invitations to play that develop and expand their fine motor capacities.

Fine Motor Activity Bottles with Loose Parts

This activity is simple and can be set up with recycled materials. This is a great opportunity to use textile and fabric based loose parts.

The task is simple. To fill the plastic bottle with the various loose parts. Yarns and ribbons are the most difficult to guide into the bottle. The straws, pipe cleaners and feathers are easier. You want to set up an invitation to fill the bottle with a variety of materials that offer different levels of challenge. Provide scissors so yarns, straws and other materials can be cut before adding.

Adjust this to fit the developmental needs of your class or child.

Art making is an ever-evolving process that involves research, invention, and risk-taking. At the heart of process art is experimentation. It is important to offer art experiences that children can bring their own ideas to test and explore.

I love introducing monoprinting to children as it gives them such a powerful process of creating art. The first time I was introduced to monoprinting with young children was through Bev Boz in the mid 1990s. Bev Boz suggested trays with a variety of household tools as brushes. See my post here.

A monoprint (sometimes called monotype) is when only one print is made at a time. After the print is made – the process begins again. Monoprinting can be done on top of any surface. Pie pans and round cake pans are great because your print will be a circle.

Mark Making with Loose Parts:

The set-up of the activity is an invitation to the child to participate in the art experience. An invitation is a tableau of thoughtfully arranged materials ready for art making. For this activity I will put out a variety of loose parts for the children to explore mark making with. They can also go and gather loose parts they are interested in using as a painting tool.

I like to put tempera paint into condiment squeeze bottles for easy squeezing of the paint. This gives children complete independence in applying paint. I do not control the amount of paint they squeeze. For some children the process is all about squeezing the bottle. I like to trust the child's process and honor what is capturing their interest. If it is squeezing paint then I let them squeeze paint. Putting a tray under the tin will allow you to return the excess paint to the bottle. I use a kitchen scraper and a funnel on the condiment bottle.

Using a paint brush, foam roller or whatever the child wishes to use – cover the surface with paint. There is no right or wrong way. It is a process. It is an exploration into a medium (paint in this case) where children can explore and experiment.

Now the fun begins! The child can make marks in the paint with a variety of loose parts. I do not guide or tell the children what to use. I try to stand back and out of the way. Let them play with the materials and discover for themselves what is possible.

Bottle caps. . .

Sticks. . .

When the child is ready, they can press a piece of paper on top of the paint and press. Again, do not worry if the paper slides or the child barely presses. It is not important. So stand back and let it all unfold.

Oftentimes children will press so hard all of the marks disappear. It is all good. It is process of creating. It is the child's exploration.

The joy is in the process. And the process can continue! I love extending art making over a series of days. One day we mono print, the next day we use markers on the print and finally another day we collage on top. This can build the idea that art can be a long and sustaining process that takes days to complete.

Children love pounding and mashing.

This harnesses the natural childhood schema of transforming – changing the state of a material. The repetitive actions of schematic play allow children to construct meaning in what they are doing.

In my own classroom, I have noticed a deep satisfaction when children pound and grind found items.

This gray mortar and pestle set is one of the most common that I find at garage sales and thrift shops.

I have found wooden ones for just $7 at the local Asian market. These are my favorite as they can withstand enthused smashing!

WARNING!

I will warn you – the children can break the marble, ceramic and Molcajete mortar & pestle sets. I buy these at thrift stores and garage sales because they do tend to break. Wood and metal are more resilient to the pounding.

DIY MORTAR AND PESTLE

I love this simple slab of rock with a round rock for a DIY mortar and pestle.

Check with your local landscaping business for donations. Every year the landscaping store near my school always supplied me with 5 rock slabs and 10 big Mexican pebble rocks for pounding.

CRUSHING FLOWERS (FREE)

One of my favorite loose parts are flowers and petals.

The children will crush the flowers to be used in the atelier (art studio) for art making.

My secret. Partner with a local florist. Ask to be given the flowers that are no longer sellable. You will have an endless supply.

IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS:

Do check with your florist to see if they purchase flowers grown with toxic pesticides. This is especially important for children who are likely to taste the flowers.

SMASHING CHALK

Jenni, a colleague and member of the Fairy Dust team – purchased a large four-cup capacity Mortar and Pestle set for outdoor play.

Without prompting, one of her students started crushing sidewalk chalk into mud.

If so, I would like to share my two cents worth. Consider a movable mud kitchen.

A simple movable mud kitchen provides children with the raw materials to create whatever they can imagine. It is open-ended and . . . . well. . . . movable.

I can still remember making mud pies for my pet dachshund, Bobo. My mother gave me old pots and pans, spoons and measuring cups in the backyard. I would use a bench and pretend to be a dog chef.

No specially built mud kitchen.

Just me, dirt, water and real pots and pans.

Here's how a local outdoor preschool set up their mud kitchen. It is old fashioned goodness.

What is a Pocket Projector?

Pocket Projectors are small projectors that connects via HDMI cable to most smartphones, tablets, computers, video players, cameras and more. You can project onto any surface or wall your bright, sharp images or videos.

The Provocation

The teachers think of such wonderful and developmentally appropriate ways to use technology with young children. Natalie Macare, who has taught here for many years, used her pocket projector to take the children’s investigation with found materials and plastics further.

By setting out the found and recycled materials on the table with the projection of colorful backdrop, the children began building houses of light, exploring shadow and light play, and stacking and sorting around the colors of light, and much more.

It truly was a delight to see this in action! There are so many incredible ways to utilize light with children. It opens the door to curiosity! Allows children to ask questions, learn shades of color, and incorporate light in their play.

Ideas for Pocket Projectors in the Classroom

Recording children building or playing and then projecting clip up for next day while they build

Letting children take photos via Ipad or phone on a nature walk and projecting it in a shaded place outside to discuss

Projecting patterns on the blocks in construction area

Projecting a day or nighttime sky onto ceiling in one area while children play

Project daily pictures/videos at reflection meeting wherever children are meeting

How do you use light in your classroom? I’d love to hear about it below!
