Este año estamos orgullosos de ser Media Sponsor del 13th Havana Film Festival New York que se realiza del 12 al 20 de Abril. Hemos visto crecer al festival desde sus comienzos en el 2000 y nos complace sobremanera ser parte de la celebración de lo mejor del cine latino en Nueva York.
Carol Rosenberg junto con Diana Vargas y su equipo hacen posible uno de los mejores festivales de cine de la ciudad con estrenos como Habanastation, Juan of the Dead y La hora cero/The Zero Hour entre las producciones presentes. Este año se otorga además el 3er Havana Star Prize y 19 películas están en competencia. Felicitaciones de antemano a todos los ganadores!.
Y por supuesto, les traeremos reportes diarios durante el festival. Los detalles:

* The 13th Havana Film Festival New York > April 12 - 20 > with special events April 20th at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and April 20-22 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens > HNYFF.

* Opening Night Film > Habanastation. La ópera prima de Ian Padrón y éxito de taquilla en Cuba, es una divertida e ingeniosa mirada a La Habana de hoy a través de los ojos de dos niños provenientes de clases sociales distintas. Habanastation también forma parte del programa familiar el 15 de abril, a las 12:30pm, en el Quad Cinema, y en el Museum of the Moving Image en Astoria, el 21 de abril, a las 12 pm.

* Closing Night Film > Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos), la primera película sobre “zombies” hecha en Cuba y dirigida por Alejandro Brugués. La cinta gira en torno a una serie de eventos que comienzan misteriosamente a desarrollarse. En principio, Juan cree que es solo otra etapa de la revolución cubana pero luego se da cuenta que los culpable no son humanos y que será muy difícil matarlos y decide crear la empresa “Matamos a sus seres queridos”. Juan de los Muertos es la segunda película de Brugés.

El festival rinde tributo a la actriz cubana Eslinda Nuñez. Durante más de cuarenta años, Eslinda Nuñez ha participado en algunas de las películas más importantes hechas en Cuba, incluyendo Lucía de Humberto Solas, Memorias del subdesarrollo de Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. La artista presentará en Nueva York las cintas Amada, Amada, Cecilia (dirigidas por Humberto Solas) y Bailando Chá Chá Chá (Manuel Herrera.)

HFFNY también rinde homenaje a uno de los maestros de la fotografía en el cine latinoamericano: Raúl Pérez Ureta. Colaborador de directores como Fernando Pérez (Madagascar, La vida es silbar, Suite Habana), Daniel Díaz Torres (Otra mujer, Alicia en el pueblo de Maravillas, Hacerse el sueco), Gerardo Chijona (Boleto al paraíso, Perfecto amor equivocado), Pérez Ureta es el jefe del Departamento de Fotografía de la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños de Cuba. Ha sido definido como el creador de “una estética paradójica y opuesta que embellece la infelicidad y proyecta sombras por sobre la alegría”. Pérez Ureta presentará dos películas ganadoras de premios a la mejor fotografía: Martí. El ojo del canario (The Eye of Canary), estreno en Nueva York, y Madrigal. Ambas cintas son dirigidas por Fernando Pérez.

PREMIOS HAVANA PRIZE STAR.

Diecinueve películas competirán por el honor de ganar el tercer Havana Star Prize. Las categorías son: Mejor Película, Mejor Director y Mejor Guión. También en contienda está el segundo Havana Star Prize al Mejor Documental, a entregarse el 20 de abril durante la Noche de Cierre del festival.

Opening Night Film: The Festival opens April 12th at the Directors Guild Theatre with the N.Y. Premiere of Habanastation, the latest film by Cuban director Ian Padrón. The film presents the story of two young boys who become friends despite their differences; a film that speaks of a Havana that reveals two distinct faces from the everyday life of these youngsters.

Closing Night Film: HFFNY closes on April 20th at 7 pm at the New York Directors Guild Theatre with the highly anticipated N.Y. premiere of Juan of the Dead, Alejandro Brugues' second feature film. In this first "zombie movie" made in Cuba, a series of strange events start to develop: more and more people become violent, attacking each other. At first, Juan believes that it's just another stage of the Cuban revolution but then he realizes that the culprits are not human and killing them would be very difficult.

El maestro Chick Corea se presenta en el Highline Ballroom por solo una noche, Rodrigo y Gabriela se presentan en el Radio City y Gilberto Santa Rosa en el Lehman Center del Bronx. Y me imagino que a casa llena!
La compañia Danza Brazil y el Ballet Hispano se presentan en el Teatro Joyce de Chelsea y la Compañía Limón Dance se presenta en The Americas Society. Para finalizar, mencionamos a Funk Art, que celebra nuevo CD junto con el cantante argentino Federico Aubele en Le Poison Rouge! Veamos:

ESL Music, BYT and Eclectic Media present The Funk Ark, Chico Mann, Frederico Aubele and Ursula 1000 performing the best in afro-beat, house, funk and tropicalia at Le Poisson Rouge. The Funk Ark is a Washington DC based group that serves up afro-funk in the vein of Fela Kuti or James Brown on a tropical holiday. Chico Mann brings the hip hop, house tropicalia mix that is getting huge right now, and he does it right–he is a favorite. Federico Aubele is a Buenos Aires singer who calls on the sounds of Jamaican dub and reggae, American ambient and hip-hop, Mexican bolero, and Argentine tango. Last but not least, Brooklyn native Ursula 1000 uses heavy sampling to make fun, danceable lounge, breakbeat, glam and cha cha beats.

During the tour and at Radio City Music Hall, Rodrigo y Gabriela will be performing with the band C.U.B.A. in order to showcase the thrilling and dynamic hybrid of metal, latin and jazz featured on the album in a live setting. It will mark the first time in their careers that Rodrigo y Gabriela have toured and performed with a backing band.

Applauded for its "high-octane, high-flying" (The New York Times) fusion of African dance forms, modern dance and capoeira, the company performs Dance like a Fight - Fight like a Dance, a sensuous, fast-paced new work by Artistic Director Jelon Vieira that draws upon the ongoing dialogue of a capoeira roda, (the circle where capoeira lives). Also on the program—the revival of last season's hit Batuke, a hard-driving piece exploding with the rhythms created by smooth samba steps, capoeira lethal kicks, and the stick dance Maculelé.

Gilberto Santa Rosa is known to tropical music fans around the world as "El Caballero de La Salsa" (The Gentleman of Salsa). He gained worldwide recognition for a career spanning over 20 years as an impressive sonero with his unique style of "soneo" (improvisation) in salsa that permitted him to be successful in both the "tropical" and "romantic" styles of the music. His string of hits and artistic record of accomplishment reaffirms him as one of the most prolific masters of popular Caribbean music.

* Ballet Hispánico > Abril 17 al 29 > Joyce Theater > Ballet.

Ballet Hispánico pays tribute to the richness of its Latino roots—and the diverse talents of the company's dancers—with a Joyce season that features African and Caribbean influences. Highlights include the world premiere of Espiritu Vivo, created especially for Ballet Hispanico by Ronald K. Brown and set to live music by Afro-Peruvian Latin Grammy winner Susana Baca; and the Joyce premiere of Asuka, Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro's first work for the company, an exuberant homage to salsa legend Celia Cruz. A trio of alternately edgy and theatrical works from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa—including the New York premiere of Nube Blanco—captures the emotional range of the company, while the program sees a revival of Pedro Ruiz's Guajira and the return of repertory gem Tito on Timbales by William Whitener.

Spain’s Barcelona Ballet (formerly Corella Ballet) returns to New York City Center for a second engagement following several successful U.S. tours. Artistic Director Ángel Corella will dance with his company in a program featuring Clark Tippet’s Bruch Violin Concerto, Christopher Wheeldon’s For 4, and the world premiere of Pálpito, by Ángel Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez.

* Lucia Pulido: Journeying - Por esos caminos CD Release > April 19 > Joe's Pub > PULIDO.

With one of the richest voices on the international Latin musical scene today, Lucia Pulido has mined the musical traditions of her native Colombia and ther Latin American countries in an ongoing search for a distinct, experimental style. The New York Times says that, "Ms. Pulido holds on to the rawness of the original melodies while giving them a sophisticated new context." Her ensemble pays homage to the "chirimía", one of the many types of Colombian street bands, using traditional genres such as cumbia and bullerengue from the Atlantic Coast, currulaos from the Pacific Coast as well as joropos of the Colombian Eastern Plains as the point of departure for creative musical excursions. Pulido's vocal sophistication is enhanced in genres such as herding songs (cantos de vaquería), funeral laments (alabaos) and harvest chants (cantos de zafra) which give the singer the liberty to explore her voice fully.

The best-selling French band in history, the Gipsy Kings are among the best-known non-English speaking groups in the U.S. (the band’s language is the Gypsy dialect of gitane). The band’s vigorous guitar work and passionate vocals are the trademarks of an indigenous musical tradition known as “rumba flamenca.”

Los grandes ligas toman la cartelera teatral este mes. Evita por un lado y Leap of Faith por el otro, permiten al talento latino presentarse en Nueva York por la puerta grande: Broadway.
Ricky Martin y Elena Rogers estrenan Evita en el Teatro Marquis y Raúl Esparza es la estrella en el nuevo musical Leap of Faith. Se unen así a The Book of Mormon, otro musical con talento latino.

“In The Time of the Butterflies” is the story of the courageous Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) from the Dominican Republic. The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The ‘butterflies’, their secret code name, were brutally murdered by the regime in 1960.
Based on Julia Álvarez’s popular novel, the martyred butterflies come to vibrant life in a warm, brilliant, and dramatic production by the talented duo – playwright Caridad Svich and director José Zayas– that brought us the critically acclaimed production of Isabel Allende’s “The House of the Spirits” in 2009.

Como parte de la muestra de John Chambelain el Guggenheim presenta The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez durante Abril y Mayo y en ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES tendremos SPANISH CINEMA OF THE EARLY POST-FRANCO ERA con filmes de Almódovar, Ventura Pons e Iván Zulueta, entre otros. Los dos eventos para los cinéfilos es sin duda el Tribeca Film Festival y el Havana Film Festival New York de los cuales tendremos más información en otros artículos.
El Instituto Cervantes tiene una gran selección este mes: Cortos Dominicanos, Documentales de Cuba y filmes de directores de origen Totonacan (Mexico)y Maya (Guatemala).

Artifical Paradises is a "poetic contemplation that balances a landscape's serene beauty with the small futile dramas of characters whose lives are ruled by intoxication" (Screen International). Acclaimed at Rotterdam and winner of the Best Cinematography Award at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, Mexican filmmaker Yulene Olaizola's elegant drama is a journey into the altered states and unlikely friendship of young heroin addict Luisa (Luisa Pardo) and pot-smoking, aging caretaker Salomon (Salomón Hernández). Gloriously photographed, the film is an evocation of this odd couple's emotions, their attempts to escape from everyday life and reach an artificial Eden, as well as the storms brought on by their enjoyment of this experience in a crumbling Veracruz beach resort.

Starring Taylor Mead in the role of the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez and Ultra Violet as his beloved consort and daughter of the Aztec emperor Montezuma, this underground classic unfolds as a narrative exploration into the imagined private life of its titular character.

Anthology, in collaboration with film scholar Gerard Dapena and the Cultural Department of the Consulate General of Spain, is thrilled to present this film series surveying the era in Spanish cinema directly following the death, after almost four decades of dictatorial rule, of Francisco Franco. The period that followed was one of cultural awakening across many different art forms, and this was certainly true of Spanish cinema – the eight years covered by this program saw a burst of creativity and experimentation, resulting in films like Iván Zulueta’s sex-and-drugs-filled underground classic ARREBATO (RAPTURE); Ventura Pons’s extraordinary OCAÑA: RETRATO INTERMITENTE, a portrait of a homosexual painter; Jaime Chavarri’s DISENCHANTMENT, a documentary profiling the widow and children of the official poet of Franco’s regime; and Pedro Almodóvar’s flamboyant, unapologetically tasteless early films (represented here by PEPI, LUCI, BOM and LABYRINTH OF PASSION); among many other unforgettable works that took full advantage of Spain’s newfound creative freedom.
Paying homage to this extraordinary era in Spanish cinema, this series features ten films, most of them rarely screened in the U.S. since their initial release, and all of them shown from archival prints.

Josu Jon has been injured in a hard clash with the Civil Guard and he has lost his memory. He is treated in a prison hospital while he is waiting to see what the judge and the competent authority decide. He is not very sure who he is, so the nuns teach him to pray and be a good Christian. However, other inmates from the same organization as him, help him to remember that he is, in fact, a brave “gudari”, and that he will soon be returning to the struggle as soon as he gets out of prison. In the meantime, events follow their course in the Basque Country: a university professor, Xabier, is threatened for his opinions of the situation in Euskadi (the Basque Country). At the same time, his girlfriend works as a psychologist in the same psychiatric center where they are supervising Josu Jon’s progress.

Michelangelo Antonioni (1912–2007), the great Italian director of L’Avventura, Red Desert, and Blow-Up, began his career making documentaries. Rarely seen outside Italy, these films offer a deeper understanding of the aesthetic he would develop in later years. On the occasion of the centenary of Antonioni’s birth, Museum of the Moving Image will offer a rare opportunity to see Antonioni’s documentaries, including a selection of short works and screenings of Chung Kuo China. This legendary but seldom-shown four-hour documentary was made at the invitation of Mao Zedong but then banned by the Chinese government for years.

A provocative, morbidly comic drama that begins during the onset of the bloody 1973 Chilean coup that overthrew President Salvador Allende. Alfredo Castro (who played the title character in TONY MANERO, Larraín’s previous critically acclaimed film) is a coroner’s assistant who, while obsessively wooing an erotic dancer, is caught in the midst of a cataclysmic event — and finds himself with a rapidly expanding game plan. Once again, the filmmaker invests his characters with metaphoric undertones, suffusing Santiago with a surreal visual texture that evokes the nightmarish landscape it was rapidly becoming.

It includes scenes of shows and musical meetings with special guests Filhos de Ghandi, Gil's family, Stevie Wonder (who interprets "Desafinado"), Caetano Veloso and Carlinhos Brown, among others. It includes the great successes of Gilberto Gil, such as "Madalena," "Cores Vivas," "Vamos Fugir," "Procissão" and "Expresso 2222."

- One Robbery, Two Friends and Three to Run: The precarious economic situation has given Cornelio the idea of robbing a Money Exchanger with an ingenious strategy. For this he has the support of his friend, Julio who was asked to be the getaway driver. Julio without showing much interest in the plan will try to persuade Cornelio to stop his plan and find another way to earn money.

- Head / Tails: Ana wakes up early everyday to go to work while her boyfriend Allan stays at home. Every decision he makes is determined by a flip of a coin. One day Ana, tired of the situation, decides that everything must change in a radical way.

- Almost: The sudden break of a couple ends up giving them the surprise of their lives.

- Alike: This is the story of a young boy who does not understand why he cannot play with his best friend, Luisito. His mother’s racial prejudices don’t allow him to interact with other kids. But thanks to a game of questions and answers with his best friend, he discovers they are not so different after all.

This is a documentary full of humor and authentic Cuban music. Director, Edesio Alejandro, will be present for a Q&A.
- To Be A Human Being - Love: One episode of the six full-length documentaries that are part of To be a Human Being, a series made in eight diverse communities around the world by young filmmakers from film schools in seven different countries. It is a celebration of humanity, based on a simple premise that emerged from a conversation with a woman subsistence farmer in Kenya in 1986 - what we have in common is very big, and what is different between us is very interesting. The six universal human characteristics identified by the Kenyan farmer form the themes for the six Chapters of the series - Perseverance, Love, Culture, Faith, Fear and Hope. The series was produced and coordinated by the International Film and TV School (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, with other participating film schools from India, New Zealand, Portugal, Jordan, Spain and New York. El Museo de Arte de Queens presenta una serie de fotografías de la Nueva York de los años 50 cautivante, del artista Frank Oscar Larson. Además, Queens International 2012: Three Points Make a Triangle, una revista del talento de este condado neoyorquino.

Tienen hasta el 7 de Abril para ver a Alexander Arrechea en la Magnan Metz de Chelsea. Diego Rivera, la Bienal del Whitney, Cindy Sherman en el Moma todos continúan, asi como Testimonios y Gran Caribe en El Museo del Barrio. El Instituto Cervantes presenta una serie de actividades dedicadas al terrorismo y sus víctimas que incluye una muestra y diversos paneles.

Este mes he visitado el Museum of Fine Arts de Boston y sus nuevas alas; una, Art of the Americas y la otra, Contemporary Art. Dos nuevos espacios que han transformado el museo y que apuntan al futuro. Sencillamente espectaculares. Frank Oscar Larson (1896-1964) was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, of Swedish immigrant parents and lived in Flushing, Queens most of his life. As an adult, Larson spent his days at a branch of the Empire Trust Company (now Bank of New York Mellon), working his way up through the ranks from auditor to vice-president, and spare time on weekends taking photographs of street life throughout New York City. He was an accomplished photographer who eloquently documented 1950s Chinatown, the Bowery, Hell’s Kitchen, City Island, Times Square, Central Park, and much more. This exhibition is compiled from thousands of negatives recently discovered stored away in his daughter-in-law’s house in Maine in 2009. Soren Larson, his grandson and a television news camera man and producer, has been scanning and printing the 55 year old images found stored in over 100 envelopes filled with mostly medium format, 2-1/4 x 2-1/4″ negatives, and neatly noted by location and date in Larson’s own hand.

In 1922 Vasily Kandinsky accepted a teaching position at the Bauhaus, the state-sponsored Weimar school of art and applied design founded in 1919 by architect Walter Gropius.

The school’s curriculum was based on the principle that the crafts were equal to the traditional arts and was organized according to a medieval-style guild system of training under the tutelage of masters. Kandinsky conducted the Wall Painting Workshop and Preliminary Course and taught at all three of the school’s sequential locations in Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin until 1933, when the Bauhaus was closed due to pressure from the National Socialist (Nazi) government.

With collage—the juxtaposition of heterogeneous elements—and abstraction—the elimination of figurative imagery—as guiding principles, Chamberlain articulated the maxim that permeates his entire oeuvre: “it’s all in the fit.” Throughout his career, modulations in scale and medium provide a vital rhythm to his development. The sculptures range from the size of a fist to the girth of a generous hug to the height of a young, and eventually not so young, tree. Swelling and shrinking, in coats of multicolor, monochrome, or black-and-white paint, the survey of Chamberlain’s career displays the integrity of the artist’s gesture in diverse manifestations. Despite his commitment to abstraction, identifying anthropomorphic and zoomorphic traits in the lyrical, twisting forms is irresistible. Their playful titles are planted like so many red herrings: Belvo-Violet (1962), Miss Lucy Pink (1962), Rooster Starfoot (1976), Lord Suckfist (1989), and SPHINXGRIN TWO (1986/2010).

Francesca Woodman is the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s brief but extraordinary career to be seen in North America. More than thirty years after her death, the moment is ripe for a historical reconsideration of her work and its reception. Woodman’s oeuvre represents a remarkably rich and singular exploration of the human body in space and of the genre of self-portraiture in particular. Her interest in female subjectivity, seriality, Conceptualist practice, and photography’s relationship to both literature and performance are also hallmarks of the heady moment in American photography during which she came of age.

This is the first large-scale exhibition to explore the early career of one of the best-known American artists of the twentieth century. Tracing the development of Haring’s extraordinary visual vocabulary, the exhibition includes 155 works on paper, numerous experimental videos, and over 150 archival objects, including rarely seen sketchbooks, journals, exhibition flyers, posters, subway drawings, and documentary photographs.

"Abstract Universe" is an exhibition of large-scale pulverized glass and acrylic paintings by Carol Brown Goldberg. The exhibition is curated by Donald Kuspit, distinguished scholar and art critic, who describes this selection of Goldberg's work as "Baroque Color Field painting" that has been inspired by the artist's reflection on the Creation. The artist states that "In my art, I create a system, a layering, that allows me to get into a flow of timelessness, and the repetition of shapes and forms compound the meditative process. I am in awe at the alchemy of paint, and how fluid can be harnessed to create images that transport us into a realm of mystery."

In December 1931, two years after its founding, The Museum of Modern Art inaugurated a major exhibition of work by the Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Only the second retrospective presented at the young Museum, the show was wildly popular, breaking attendance records in its five-week run. Rivera’s international celebrity was based on his fame as a muralist, but murals—by definition made and fixed on site—were impossible to transport. To solve this problem, MoMA brought the artist to New York from Mexico six weeks before the opening and provided him with makeshift studio space in an empty gallery. Working around the clock with three assistants, Rivera produced five “portable murals”—freestanding frescoes with bold images commemorating events in Mexican history. After the opening, to great publicity, Rivera added three more murals, now taking on New York subjects through monumental images of the urban working class and the social stratification of the city during the Great Depression. All eight were on display for the rest of the show’s run.

Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas touches on the performative nature of politics and religion—performance being a key mechanism for strengthening bonds of community and religious belief. The exhibition features the imaginative musical instruments used during these events and emotive portrayals of performers—from kings to commoners.

The Marco Polo Syndrome: Contemporary Cuban Art presents a selection of The Blanton’s holding from some of the most important contemporary Cuban artists working today. The exhibition examines the cultural renaissance of 1980s Cuba that swept the visual arts, cinema, literature, and theatre. The work of artists like José Bedia, Ricardo Rodríguez Brey, and Flavio Garciandía, on view in the exhibition, became pivotal to this artistic evolution, with works that spoke to a collective desire to achieve greater creative freedom within the conservative and repressive system that defined the everyday life in Cuba at the time. The title of the exhibition references Flavio Garciandía’s 1986 series, El síndrome de Marco Polo, which became an emblematic work of the emerging and thriving artistic community.

Innovative and emerging voices in film from Brazil, Colombia and Argentina, and a short from Spain will be part of the 41st edition of New Directors/New Films Festival.

The festival(NDNF) will screen the Rotterdam Film Festival winner Neighboring Sounds; a festival favorite and first feature by Julia Murat, Found Memories; Camera d’Or winner Las Acacias by Pablo Giorgelli; Porfirio, Colombian docudrama by Sundance lab fellow Alejandro Landes; Brazilian short documentary Street Vendor Cinema by Clarissa Knoll; and Oh Sorrow (Ay Pena), another short, from Spain, directed by Elisa Cepedal.

"This year's New Directors/New Films cohort of filmmakers seems especially promising. I can't recall an edition of the series on which I worked that had a greater variation of styles or more innovative approaches to creating deeply personal cinema." said Richard Peña, Film Society of Lincoln Center Program Director.

La caja de los recuerdos, y de los secretos, es algo que creo todos poseemos. Aquel lugar donde atesoramos lo que nos ha importado de alguna manera en la vida y que pensamos solo nosotros tenemos acceso. Mientras estamos vivos.

EN EL HOSPITAL.

Después pasan muchas cosas con esa caja. Algunas veces, cuando se trata de personajes o hechos de relevancia, la caja de los recuerdos se transforma en un tesoro, literalmente. Tesoro de información, de documentación, de aclaraciones y de nuevas dudas. Sobre todo, de un entendimiento más completo de la persona en cuestión, su entorno y su tiempo. Y nuestra historia.

A Tavés de los años.

Asi llegué a la muestra Frida Kahlo: Sus Fotografías. Y tal cual, me encontré con una Frida más completa, la Frida íntima, familiar, privada. Me caminé la muestra varias veces como si Frida me estuviese dando el recorrido. 'Mira esta foto - me decía Frida - la tomé yo cuando era niña....'Y aquí estaba en el hospital en Nueva York... y aqui con Diego .. y aqui con Tina Modotti ... y Trotsky... Y aqui mi bella madre y el guapo de mi padre....'. En fin, atando cabos de momentos personales con momentos ya históricos y plasmados en su obra artística.

Frida Kahlo: Sus Fotografías se realiza en las estupendas instalaciones de Artisphere (Arlington, Virginia) hasta el 25 de Marzo. La muestra reune copias de 240 fotografías (de más de 6,000) seleccionados por el fotográfo y curador mexicano Pablo Ortiz Monasterio de los archivos de Kahlo sellados después de su muerte en 1954 y abiertos por primera vez en 2007. Las fotografías originales están expuestas en en Museo Frida Kahlo de Coyoacán, México ( según el testamento de Diego Rivera ninguna fotografía puede salir de México).

ARTE DE LA AMERICA ANTIGUA EN EL WALTERS MUSEUM

Prepárense para maravillarse ante las exquisitas piezas de arte de Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas : la Colección Bourne, la muestra que abrió recientemente en el Museo de Arte Walters de Baltimore y que cataloga más de 2,500 años de creación artística en el continente.

El observador casual podría pensar que el arte usualmente llamado pre-colombino no pasa de vasijas y estatuas de cerámica, piezas de oro, o grandes monumentos de piedra de gestos frios y lineas fuertes.

Pero viendo las 135 piezas de arte que forman parte de la Colección Bourne y que fueron donadas recientemente al Museo Walters, cualquier duda es rápidamente disipada. Como pueden apreciar en estas fotos - que tomé durante la apertura para miembros a la que fui generosamente invitado por el museo - Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas rompe ese molde con estátuas y piezas de singular belleza y delicadeza, además de instrumentos musicales, parejas de músicos, o parejas que parecieran estar mostrándose afecto (no es el caso).

Pocas veces se ven piezas de esta calidad que nos permiten un conocimiento más profundo y realístico de la cultura de nuestros antepasados. Esto a lo mejor se deba a que John Bourne fue uno de los primeros exploradores del mundo perdido Maya y esa conección temprana le permitió traer a la luz piezas de singular belleza a lo largo del continente. Para los que hemos tenido la fortuna de visitar México, Perú o museos en otras partes del mundo sabemos que el nivel de refinamiento - craftmanship - es elevado. Ahora, viendo la muestra Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas el abanico se expande desde México a Chile. Saldrán inspirados.

Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas: La Collección Bourne estará abierta al público hasta el 20 de mayo de 2012. Más detalles acerca de la muestra: Son 135 obras de arte de culturas que florecieron y murieron en México, Centro-América y la parte Andina de Sud América de 1200 A.C. – 1530 D.C. Las obras pertenecen a la que fue la colección de John Bourne, quien la donó recientemente al Museo Walters y que expresa las estéticas, visión del mundo e ideología espiritual distintiva de cada cultura.

Los historiadores modernos agrupan las variadas sociedades antiguas al Sur de Estados Unidos en tres grandes tradiciones basadas en la geo-política y diseños antiguos de rasgos culturales compartidos: Mesoamérica, Centro América y la parte Andina de Sud América. La exposición pone de relieve las obras de arte como ilustraciones de los principios fundamentales de las sociedades tales como el chamanismo como basamento del Gobierno en Mesoamérica, Costa Rica y Panamá, así como los principios cósmicos plasmados en oro y plata en Colombia, Ecuador y Perú. Los artistas expresaron los aspectos que hacían que cada sociedad sea única de manera novedosa en figuras humanas monumentales y portátiles, seres y deidades espirituales, y compañeros de la vida cotidiana como perros hechos de piedra, arcilla, metales preciosos y textiles.
      La exposición Explorando el Arte de las Américas Antiguas habla acerca de la naturaleza representativa de la política y la religión – puesto que la actuación es el mecanismo clave para reforzar los vínculos comunitarios y creencias religiosas. La exposición da un lugar protagónico a los instrumentos musicales imaginativos que se usaban durante estos eventos así como la representación emotiva de los intérpretes – desde Reyes a gente común.
      “Mucho antes de los medios de comunicación masivos como la televisión, el internet o los smartphones, los espectáculos eran un mecanismo público vital para la comunicación en tiempo real de las creencias sociales, políticas e ideológicas de las culturas”, escribió el Curador Consultor de Arte de las Américas Antiguas, Dorie Reents-Budet. “En las Américas antiguas, como en cualquier otro lugar en la historia mundial, la actuación transmitía la identidad del grupo y reforzaba las jerarquías sociales del poder político y otras características claves de una sociedad.
      Esta exposición muestra una selección del coleccionista John Bourne, el cual fue unos de los primeros exploradores en sondear a profundidad las junglas montañosas del Sur de México. Viajando con el Explorador Carlos Frey (Herman Charles) y el Fotógrafo Giles Healy, fueron entre los primeros exploradores occidentales en visitar Bonampak, el ahora famoso yacimiento Maya célebre por su edificio real de tres cuartos cuyas paredes interiores estaban cubiertas de murales, las que registraban una batalla y rituales públicos acerca de la historia política de la realeza en el yacimiento durante el siglo octavo. El Miami International Film Festival es uno de los festivales más importantes del país y es, además, uno de los principales exponentes del cine iberoamericano > Este año, aparte de la Competencia Knight de Cine Iberoamericano, el festival ha creado el Concurso Lexus de Opera Prima Iberoamericana.
El line-up del festival es fuerte y variado. Podemos reconocer varias películas que ya se han presentado en NYC pero muchas más que tendrán su estreno mundial o su estreno en los Estados Unidos en Miami. * Zoológico (Chile, dirigida por Rodrigo Marín): este comentario social acerca de la juventud actual que transcurre en un afluente suburbio de Santiago, narra la historia de tres adolescentes (Alicia Rodríguez, Luis Balmaceda y Santiago de Aguirre) consumidos en costumbres americanizadas: centros comerciales, la Internet, pornografía, patinetas y ansiedad. Estreno norteamericano.

* El gato desaparece (Argentina, dirigida por Carlos Sorín): cuando Beatriz (Beatriz Spelzini) va a buscar a su esposo Luis (Luis Luque) a quien han dado de alta de un sanatorio, ella no cree demasiado en la afirmación del psiquiatra de que su esposo se ha curado. La desaparición del gato de la familia, pone en tela de juicio su propia salud mental así como la de su esposo en este inquietante misterio psicológico de Sorín. Estreno estadounidense.

* Madrid, 1987 (España, dirigida por David Trueba): el equilibrio entre el poder y el deseo se altera durante el encuentro de un viejo periodista (José Sacristán) y una joven estudiante (María Valverde) en esta meditación de alba al crepúsculo hermosamente escrita acerca de la juventud, la vejez y la música de las esferas. Estreno en la Costa Este.

* Violeta se fue a los cielos (Chile, dirigida por Andrés Wood): retrato de la afamada cantante, folclorista y artista multifacética Violeta Parra (Francisca Gavilán) nos brinda selecciones de su obra musical, sus recuerdos, sus amores y esperanzas. Estreno en la Costa Este.

"Abstract Universe" is an exhibition of large-scale pulverized glass and acrylic paintings by Carol Brown Goldberg. The exhibition is curated by Donald Kuspit, distinguished scholar and art critic, who describes this selection of Goldberg's work as "Baroque Color Field painting" that has been inspired by the artist's reflection on the Creation. The artist states that "In my art, I create a system, a layering, that allows me to get into a flow of timelessness, and the repetition of shapes and forms compound the meditative process. I am in awe at the alchemy of paint, and how fluid can be harnessed to create images that transport us into a realm of mystery."

Félix Candela is regarded as one the greatest Spanish architects of the 20th century. He is celebrated for his feats of architectural engineering that transform concrete into visual poetry with his structural design based on hyperbolic paraboloid geometric form. His work with thin-shell concrete roof structures broke barriers between architecture and engineering that opened the way for other architects such as Santiago Calatrava.

His works are located in Mexico, the United Status, Spain, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Great Britain and Norway. His commitment to making economic, long-lasting, beautiful works made him the precursor of sustainable architecture.

For more than half a century this great collection of personal memorabilia remained hidden from the public. The book is a raw social commentary that connects with themes that are still an important part of the American reality today including economic inequalities, racial-social discrimination and the brutality of the urban landscape. Poeta en Nueva York connects deeply with the current socioeconomic climate, the "Occupy" movement, and the general population discontent about how our system is working and Cuadrado's music, in turn, is a contemporary reflection on Lorca's themes and cityscape.

JOAQUIN SOROLLA & THE GLORY OF SPANISH DRESS

Hace ya un siglo, en 1911, The Hispanic Society of America de Nueva York le comisionó al valenciano Joaquin Sorolla, uno de los más reconocidos artistas de la época, una serie de pinturas de gran tamaño llamada Vision of Spain, un retrato en lienzo de la España de entonces. Los 14 lienzos resultantes reflejan esa vida cotidiana, las fiestas, los atuendos tradicionales, los ornamentos y la joyería usada en 11 regiones de la península. El comisión fue terminada en 1919 e instalada en Nueva York en 1926. Recientemente, Vision of Spain fue sometida a una restauración y después a una gira por España.

De aqui parte la muestra JOAQUIN SOROLLA & THE GLORY OF SPANISH DRESS en el Queen Sofia Spanish Institute de la Park Avenue. La muestra analiza la rica historia de la 'moda', del 'vestido' español a través de la obra de Sorolla - representada en la muestra por varios de los bocetos o estudios que el artista realizó para hacer sus grandes lienzos de Vision of Spain - junto con vestimenta original de la época traídos por primera vez a los Estados Unidos. Se le añade otra dimensión a la muestra al presentar la influencia española en la moda internacional contemporanea a través de los diseños de Cristóbal Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, Stefano Pilati, Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen y Marquesa.

JOAQUIN SOROLLA & THE GLORY OF SPANISH DRESS presenta en toda su gloria la riqueza y la variedad de la moda y las costumbres ibéricas captadas entre 1911 y 1919. La exquisita confección, la joyería y ornamentos usados crean trajes ricos en texturas y 'layers' de gran belleza.

Me llamó la atención ver estilos que uno pensaría variaron muy poco a través de los siglos y destellos de modernidad como el Mantón de Manila de la foto 3 (arriba), o el boceto de Sorolla Flamenco Dancer de la foto 5 (debajo). Verán a Cayetana, la Duquesa de Alba, en sus años mozos, a caballo y luciendo el despampanante Traje corto de la foto 1- o traje similar.

JOAQUIN SOROLLA & THE GLORY OF SPANISH DRESS de puso a pensar en varias cosas. Una fue la continua 'cross pollination', por decirlo de alguna manera, Intra culturas y entre culturas. Otra, la magnífica confección - craftmanship - en estas piezas. Otra, y que es harina de otro costal, que solo fué en los años 60 que nos liberamos de la tirania del 'fashion police'; en ese entonces, basicamente todo el mundo. Por último, la mirada a tiempos idos es siempre poderosa.

La muestra, ideada por Oscar de la Renta y curada por André Leon Talley, está abierta al público hasta el 10 de Marzo.

La cartelera cinematográfica nos trae a Miss Bala, un retrato de la realidad vivida a diario por miles de mexicanos y latinoamericanos. También nos trae la fantástica película animada Chico & Rita del español Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque) que compite en la categoria de Animación en los Oscar 2012. Además tendremos la oportunidad de ver a Raquel Welch, en la retrospectiva que le dedica la Film Society del Lincoln Center. Allí mismo se estrenará The Turin Horse una de las mejores cintas que he visto en años recientes, como parte de otra retrospectiva dedicada al cineasta húngaro Béla Tarr. Otra gran cinta que viene a Nueva York es Neón Flesh, del español Paco Cabezas, una de las mejores producciones que ví en el pasado Tribeca Film Festival. Y por supuesto, The Artist continua en cartelera y sigue cosechando éxitos además de 10 nominaciones al Oscar. There are several films from Latino filmmakers participating at the Sundance Film Festival. With several films in competition, Latinos keep showing the growing importance of Latino talent in the US, Latin America and Europe. Here is a list. Keep it handy for when these films show up at a theater near you!

1- Red Lights / U.S.A., Spain (Director and screenwriter: Rodrigo Cortés) — Psychologist Margaret Matheson and her assistant study paranormal activity, which leads them to investigate a world-renowned psychic. Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Elizabeth Olsen, Toby Jones.

Todo esto de aprender a desarrollar aplicaciones ha sido retador para este servidor que no tiene experticia en estas lides. Atando cabos, a pesar del jargon y las incertidumbres, he podido abrirme paso. Por supuesto, las cosas se hacen mucho más fáciles cuando usas un servicio como APPS Builder que lo hace todo muy fácil, solo pidiéndote paciencia y sentido común. El reto se presenta cuando el guión no se da como se esperaba. Cuando malamente lees code, las limitaciones son amplias cuando te enfrentas a los foros que generosamente te ayudan tanto, pero que te toman un rato para enterarte...

El uso de las APPS ya cambió el panorama de cómo nos comunicamos y nos informamos. Una APP para cada cosa que te puedas imaginar. Hace pocos días escuché a un cantante famoso hablar del lanzamiento de su próxima producción en una APP. Así, buscando vías creadoras de ingresos, me di a la tarea de desarrollar la aplicación Latino Events.

While Clemente is looking for the child’s mother, Sofía cares for the baby and looks after the moneylender's house. With the arrival of these beings in his life, Clemente has the opportunity to reconsider his emotional relations with people. Michael Rowe’s debut feature film, winner of the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of Laura, a young journalist living an isolated life in a cramped Mexico City flat who is not lucky in love. The banality of her daily life stands in stark contrast to her nightly pursuit of sex and love. These short-lived affairs barely take the edge off her isolation, but then she meets the brooding, would-be actor Arturo. Their chemistry ignites feelings in Laura that leave her deeply troubled. The two embark on an increasingly dangerous sadomasochistic relationship in which pleasure, pain and love merge. Their physical relationship seems headed for a very dark place as her secret past resurfaces, pushing Arturo to the limit in this intense, powerful and at times deeply unsettling movie.

Hailed as “one of the most impressive debuts by a Mexican filmmaker” by Robert Koehler (Variety), Huezo’s remarkable film tells the story of Cinquera, a tiny place nestled in the mountains amidst the humid jungle that was ravaged by the bloody civil war that swept El Salvador between 1980 and 1992. The powerful and hypnotic documentary depicts a community that has learned to live with its sorrow, an annihilated town that re-emerges through the strength and deep love of its inhabitants for the land and people. With a lyrical eye, Huezo interweaves the simplicity of the town’s present life with tragic testimonies of the past. The Tiniest Place is ultimately a story of resilience, hope and the ability of the human being to reinvent himself after surviving a tragedy.
