"Telnet" is the accepted name of the Internet protocol and the command name on UNIX systems for a type of terminal emulation program which allows users to log into remote computer networks, whether the network being targeted for login is physically in the next room or halfway around the globe. A common program feature is the ability to emulate several diverse types of terminals--ANSI, TTY, vt52, and more. In the early days of networking some ten to fifteen years ago, the "internet" more or less consisted of telnet, FTP (file transfer protocol), crude email programs, and news reading. Telnet made library catalogs, online services, bulletin boards, databases and other network services available to casual computer users, although not with the friendly graphic user interfaces one sees today.

Each of the early internet functions could be invoked from the UNIX prompt, however, each of them used a different client program with its own unique problems. Internet software has since greatly matured, with modern web browsers (i.e. Netscape and Internet Explorer) easily handling the WWW protocol (http) along with the protocols for FTP, gopher, news, and email. Only the telnet protocol to this day requires the use of an external program.

Due to problems with printing and saving and the primitive look and feel of telnet connections, a movement is underway to transform information resources from telnet-accessible sites to full fledged web sites. However, it is estimated that it will still take several years before quality web interfaces exist for all of the resources now currently available only via telnet. Therefore, knowing the underlying command structure of terminal emulation programs like telnet is likely to remain necessary for the networking professional for some time to come.

The chief advantage to the telnet protocol today lies in the fact that many services and most library catalogs on the Internet remain accessible today only via the telnet connection. Since telnet is a terminal application, many see it as a mere holdover from the days of mainframe computers and minicomputers. With the recent interest in $500 Internet terminals may foretell resurgence in this business. Disadvantages include the aforementioned problems that telnet tends to have printing and saving files and its primitive look and feel when compared to more modern web browsers.

Some argue that the future of the Internet lies in sophisticated web browsers like Netscape and Internet Explorer, or tools such as Gopher that "save" end users from having to deal with the command line prompt and the peculiar details of commands like Telnet. While that may be the case, the tendency remains in place for programmers to develop new software by building on the old. Therefore, knowing the underlying command structure of older protocols like telnet and rlogin are likely to remain essential skills for the networking professional in the foreseeable future.

Outsourcing can be defined as a contract service agreement in which an organisation hires out all or part of its IT responsibilities to an external company.

More and more companies are leaning towards outsourcing it could be said that this may be caused by the growing complexity of IT and the changing business needs of an organisation. As a result, an organisation may find that it is not possible to have all its IT services supplied from within its own company. Given this, an IT manager may decide to choose to seek assistance from an external contractor/company to supply their services the organisation lacks. In addition, the business competition has set the pace for an organisation to continue to strive for internal efficiency. · Learn from other companies, use their mistakes and successes to avoid duplication and waste of manpower.

In order to determine the optimum sourcing strategy, an organisation needs to look at a number of perspectives or alternatives and then balance these perspectives with the benefits and risks of outsourcing. With this information, an organisation can derive a more structured methodology for a balanced view of the IT infrastructure and its components.

Outsourcing should not be viewed as a solution in resolving problem service areas within the organisations. If an internal service area is not performing effectively and by transferring it to an external contractor could only magnify the problem. Therefore, it is important that an organisation that undertakes outsourcing must be able to clearly identify its long term IT strategic directions and long term information needs. The IT manager is the prime candidate to fulfill this role . Once the organisations have understood and addressed its long term IT strategic directions, it can then go on to decide which IT service areas should be outsourced. Organisations undertake outsourcing of their IT service areas should do so based on the basis of costs and benefits analysis and it is justified on cost effectiveness and must be based on sound business decision.

The hump-back whale gets it’s name from the distinctive hump in front of the dorsal fin and from the way it raises it’s back high above water before diving. They are a member of the order Cetacea. This order is of aquatic mammals and the hump-back belongs to the suborder of the Mysticeti. The Mysticeti are the baleen whales which have three families and several species. The family in which the hump-back belongs is the Balaenopteridae, the true fin backed whale. The thing that separates this genus from the other fin-backed whales is the pectoral fins, which grow in lengths of about 5 meters (16.4 feet). This Genus is called Megaptera meaning great wing (Tinker 290). There was a controversy over the species name in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In 1932, Remington Kellogg finally settled the matter with Megatera Novaeangliae (Cousteau 84). The common English name is the hump-back whale.

The hump-back whale lives in both the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Since we live in the Pacific I’ll be discussing the hump-backs of the North Pacific. They migrate from North to South. In the months of July through September they gather in the Aleutian Islands, Bering Sea or the Chukchi Sea. They head south for the winter. They go to one of three areas: (1) Between the Bonin Islands, the Marianas Islands, the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan; (2) The Hawaiian Islands, and (3) Along the coast of Mexico (Tinker 291).
One of the reasons these whales go North is for feeding. They have a short food chain compared to most mammals. The worldwide population of humpbacks is estimated between ten thousand and fifteen thousand animals. This count is down from over one hundred and fifty thousand last century. (Dietz 39). Man has hunted the whale close to extinction. The good news is that we have bans against killing whales in most waters. Hopefully we did this in time to save them from extinction. It would be a true shame if my grandchildren could not enjoy these wonderful creatures.

In 1990, Susan Hendrickson, a fossil hunter, discovered the largest fossil of a T-rex near Faith in South Dakota, United States. The fossil was named ‘Sue’ after the person who discovered it. Hurricanes get their start over the warm tropical waters of the North Atlantic Ocean near the equator. Most hurricanes appear in late summer or early fall, when sea temperatures are at their highest. The warm waters heats the air above it, and the updrafts of warm, moist air begin to rise. Day after day the fluffy cumuli form atop the updrafts. But the cloud tops rarely rise higher than about 6,000 feet. At that height in the tropics, there is usually a layer of warm, dry air that acts like an invisible ceiling or lid. Once in a while, something happens in the upper air that destroys this lid. Scientist don not know how this happens. But when it does, it's the first step in the birth of a hurricane. With the lid off, the warm, moist air rises higher and higher. Heat energy, released as the water vapor in the air condenses. As it condenses it drives the upper drafts to heights of 50,000 to 60,000 feet. The cumuli become towering thunderheads. From outside the storm area, air moves in over the sea surface to replace the air soaring upwards in the thunderheads. The air begins swirling around the storm center, for the same reason that the air swirls around a tornado center. As this air swirls in over the sea surface, it soaks up more and more water vapour. At the storm center, this new supply of water vapor gets pulled into the thunderhead updrafts, releasing still more energy as the water vapor condenses. This makes the updrafts rise faster, pulling in even larger amounts of air and water vapor from the storm's edges. And as the updrafts speed up, air swirls faster and faster around the storm center. The storm clouds, moving with the swirling air, form a coil. In a few days the hurricane will have grown greatly in size and power. The swirling shape of the winds of the hurricane is shaped like a dough-nut.
At the center of this giant "dough-nut" is a cloudless, hole usually having a radius of 10 miles. Through it, the blue waters of the ocean can be seen. The hurricane's wind speed near the center of the hurricane ranges from 75 miles to 150 miles per hour. The winds of a forming hurricane tend to pull away from the center as the wind speed increases. When the winds move fast enough, the "hole" developes. This hole is the mark of a full-fledge hurricane. The hole in the center of the hurricane is called the "eye" of the hurricane. Within the eye, all is calm and peaceful. But in the cloud wall surrounding the eye, things are very different. Although hurricane winds do not blow as fast as tornado winds, a hurricane is far more destructive. That's because tornado winds cover only a small area, usually less than a mile across. A hurricane's winds may cover an area 60 miles wide out from the center of the eye. Another reason is tornadoes rarely last as long as an hour, or travel more than 100 miles. However , a hurricane may rage for a week or more (example: Hurricane Dorthy) In that time, it may travel tens of thousands of miles over the sea and land. At sea, hurricane winds whip up giant waves up to 20 feet high. Such waves can tear freighters and other oceangoing ships in half. Over land, hurricane winds can uproot trees, blow down telephone lines and power lines, and tear chimneys off rooftops. The air is filled with deadly flying fragments of brick, wood, and glass.

The universe contains huge clouds made up of very large amounts

of dust and gas. About 6,000,000,000 (billion) years ago, one of

these clouds began to condense. Gravitation--the pull that all

objects in the universe have for one another--pulled the gas and

dust particles together. As the dust cloud condensed, it began

to spin. It spun faster and faster and flattened as it spun. It

became shaped like a pancake that is thick at the centre and thin

at the edges.

The slowly spinning centre condensed to make the sun. But the

outer parts of the pancake, or disk, were spinning too fast to

condense in one piece. They broke up into smaller swirls, or

eddies, which condensed separately to make the planets.

The forming sun and planets were made up mostly of gas. They

contained much more gas than dust. The earth was far bigger than

it is now and probably weighed 500 times as much.

The large body of dust and gas forming the sun collapsed rapidly

to a much smaller size. The pressure that resulted from the

collapse caused the sun to become very hot and to glow brightly.

The newly born sun began to heat up the swirling eddy of gas and

dust that was to become the earth. The gas expanded, and some of

it flowed away into space. The dust that remained behind then

collected together because of gravity. Although the shrinking

earth generated a lot of heat, most of this heat was lost into

space. Therefore, the original earth was most likely solid, not

molten.

This hypothesis was developed by a scientist, Harold C. Urey in

1952. It is also known as the Urey's hypothesis. He showed that

methane, ammonia, and water are the stable forms of carbon,

nitrogen, and oxygen if an excess of hydrogen is present. Cosmic

dust clouds, from which the earth formed, contained a great

excess of hydrogen.

A self-governing member of the Commonwealth of Nations, Australia celebrated its bicentennial in 1988z. It is a federation of five mainland states (NEW SOUTH WALES, QUEENSLAND, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, VICTORIA, WESTERN AUSTRALIA) and one island state (TASMANIA), as well as two territories (AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY, NORTHERN TERRITORY). In 1778 the first settlement (SYDNEY) was founded at an excellent harbor on the southeast coast. British convicts played an important role in the territory's early history. The discovery of gold and other ores attracted immigrants, but Australia remained a primarily agricultural country until World War II.

Subsequent industrialization has been rapid, and today Australia ranks as one of the world's most economically developed countries, although vast areas of the interior, known as the Outback, remain all but uninhabited.
