Mission Accomplished! Core Purpose and Eternal Life

Your Core Purpose is eternal because you are eternal.
That which you are intrinsically great at, that which is hard-wired into you, will not die, because your Core Competence is between your ears, and is expressed with your mouth, your hands, (Ecc 9:10) your feet, your back etc. But these are just the means by which your Core Competence is expressed.   Your Core Passion is that chief concern, outcome or achievement or "effect", that when you experience it resonates deeply within your heart. And this Passion is also give by the Eternal God.

Your Core Purpose is the product of your Core Competence [see footnote] , which is directly "hard-wired" into you, pointed at, what you really care about- your Core Passion-- (which is given from God in Psalm 37:4-6), Since your Core Purpose or what I have also called your "Life's Work", and since your Life continues after your body dies, your Core Purpose goes with you.

So this Core Purpose continues on into the eternal life you have.

Here is some Biblical proof-   In John 10:10 and in Luke 4 Jesus proclaims both his Core Purpose and his Vision for Humanity. In John 10:10 Jesus says He has come to give us LIFE, and that...to the full! A full life. THIS is his core purpose. This is full alignment with our eternal purpose in John 17:3, eternal life comes from "knowing" God and Jesus Christ whom he sent.

So is Jesus Core Purpose finished? By no means. He is now to this day at work bringing us this Life this full and satisfying Life he proclaimed in John 10:10. ( The Enemy's Core Purpose is also identified in that same passage in John.)

Jesus also had a mission-- and a mission is NOT eternal and therefore is NOT a Core Purpose. Jesus' mission is proclaimed in Matthew and other places in Gospels. But note, that this mission has a beginning, with his baptism by John, and an end, on the Cross.

In Matthew 20:18,19

¹⁸“We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death ¹⁹and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”

Jesus can only sacrifice himself on the cross ONCE!. And he did. And just before he died he proclaimed the words that prove the point and achievement- "IT IS FINISHED". Mission Accomplished. But his Core Purpose continues, eternally, to give us a FULL and SATISFYING LIFE!

There is a question here- If Jesus' Core Purpose is eternal, is ours? If my understanding of it is correct, then it continues with you, for eternity, because you will still be you.

Footnote on Core Competence- Since we will be judged according to what we have DONE, it is reasonable that that what we are asked to DO by God, we are also capable of doing!

Description- God’s Work in Progress ™ - with Jeff Pelletier, is a radio program of Becoming Great Enterprises, LLC which is owned by Jeff Pelletier. The purpose of the show is to “integrate excellence in faith and work”. The show is intended as a voice for the Faith Work- Marketplace Ministry movement that began to grow in 1994.

Integrating faith and work is new to Christianity. Jesus affirmed the marketplace as both a both a center of commercial activity and a source of salvation as he chose his disciples FROM merchants (fisherman) and tax collectors and NOT Rabbis. And he also affirmed it by using a marketplace term for what he was creating --his “Ekklessia”. This is the term that was used to summon people to gather them in the marketplace, (this is the etymology) and which Jesus used for the purpose of advancing His Kingdom until he returns. The Key is that it is meant to be in effect NOT on Sundays, but all 7 days of the week, and especially with-in our work which comprises up to 60% of our awake-time each and every week.

Show Vision- The vision for the show is to be a catalyst to establish “Righteous Free Enterprise” which is comprised of people-

who are born free,
who seek, understand and live, the “core purpose” of their lives (God’s Plan)
who seek to integrate excellence in faith and their business, government and education “work”, placing it under the Reign and Will of God,
who by submitting their work and “works” to him, advance the Kingdom.

The Show

The show originated on the World Talk Radio Network (click to listen to a show) on the internet, in October 2009. Forty two shows were produced and aired until July of 2010. It was broadcast live at 12 Noon Pacific Time and 3:00 PM Eastern time. The show began with 307 weekly listeners and ended with 5280 listeners with little or no promotion and advertising. The audience was built purely on the interest in the show and people telling people, telling people. This success proved that the content was and is viable and necessary.

And research indicates that it remains the ONLY show of its kind: A topical “magazine” of content with a core purpose and theme, that has wide appeal (work and faith) and viral appeal because the content is never “dated”. Most importantly it touches people in an area of their lives that media has totally ignored.

Stopped producing shows in July 2010

The on-going purpose of the show is the integration of excellence in faith and work leading to a world in which “Righteous Free Enterprise” is the norm in all matters pertaining to Business, Government and Education. To bring God into “all of life”. It is to the Marketplace, what “Focus on the Family” is to the Home.

The Plan- The plan for the show is to bring it to the over-the-air marketplace because it will increase both its reach and frequency, and include both mass market and internet presence. The plan is to do this with a two station simulcast in the Twin Cities in MN, and to develop a syndication network as the show captures market share in the targeted Sunday Evening (getting people ready for Monday) time slot- The idea is that being popular in that timeslot is a HUGE boon to stations.

The Guest format will remain the same- The show has a regular rotation of “concerns” and “groups” it targets and features as guests:

Owners and Entrepreneurs- Innovators
Managers and Operators and Practioners
Those who work for these people- Employees
Those who are called to serve and minister to the above groups- (ministers, authors, speakers, etc., in the “faith-work” field- as Guests)

Jeffrey Pelletier, MA, President, Becoming Great Enterprises, LLC dba "God's Work in Progress".

Jeff has been the Chief Effectiveness Officer of Becoming Great Enterprises, LLC since its inception in 2004. A true innovator in helping people and organizations fulfill their potential, Jeff has over 35 years of Human Resource and Bottom Line Management experience.

He was with General Mills Restaurants, Inc. for fifteen years working seven years in operations and eight years in management development. He was the international director of human resources for Sbarro, Inc. of Commack, New York, where he developed an international management training center. He was Director, Operations and Human Resources for Pannekoeken Family Restaurants, Inc. of Edina Minnesota, where he assisted in the company’s IPO, and created a training system that increased incremental sales by seven per cent, 90% to the bottom line.

The seed for Becoming Great was planted when Jeff was Chief Human Resource Executive for Bethany International, a 501c3 non-profit, as well as Bethany House Publishers, and Bethany Press, International, a book manufacturer in Bloomington, Minnesota. There he transformed the human resource function within this complex for-profit, and non-profit organization, and he facilitated the management team in the corporate transformation process found in the book “Good To Great - Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don’t”, by Jim Collins. The “Becoming Great” model is an extrapolation of Jeff’s analysis of the “Good to Great” study and based on the principle that an idea must succeed or fail on the merits. Jeff has produced an “organizational infrastructure” based on the Collin’s study. It has worked wonderfully in manufacturing, sales and marketing, legal organizations, so it appears that it is not limited in its application. The main reason for this is that the model is about PEOPLE, not business segment. This makes it universally applicable. It is especially effective with “emerging” organizations.

The key to success with your core purpose is to look for the need. Always be looking at and listening to opportunities that your purpose would advance. Look at companies mission statements and core purposes. Look for companies who are embarking on strategies or products where your core purpose would be valuable.

Present yourself to these companies as a "solution", and construct a cover letter that reflects your ability to help them by using your core purpose.

We are setting a goal to "intentionalize the world" . We are as we write this, working to convert our paper purpose tool, which has been in beta stage for two years, into an interactive "cloud" program that will give you clarity about your life and how you should live it.

The two components of your "Life'sWork", which is the way you bring value to life and live your most effective life, are:

Core Competence

and

Core Passion.

Understanding these two at the CORE level is the key to finding and living out your Life's Work. Once you find these two core components, you have determined how you were created and what you were created FOR. You have only to apply this Core Competence, TO your Core Passion. That is all that is required. That and devotion to God to guide your steps and walk out his plan for its use.

God's Work in Progress- Purpose and Mission, what's the difference?

The difference between a purpose and mission can be summed up in a single word and this is a very powerful word.

BY.

The word "by" when added to a purpose begins the process of describing how the purpose will be accomplished. While satisfies some, making the statement complete, it is not in my opinion, a profitable thing to do. As soon as you begin to describe the means to the end, you being to place limitations on it and because you give means (a "how") you also accelerate its accomplishment.

Missions can be accomplished. A core purpose should last a 100 years or more. And there is plenty of room in Vision- to describe the end state in all its glory.

But the means, the "by", should be left out of the Purpose, because what the future holds is in doubt and "how" we respond to it is in "flux", or should be if we really want to be effective.

Here is an example:
The purpose of West Side Community Church is to honor God by enjoying Him through reaching people with the love of Jesus Christ.

So if I'm not enjoying him by reaching people with his love.....I am NOT honoring God?

That is what is implied, because it is described- The better path for a purpose statement is less...nor more. To Honor God.....

As I said there lots of room for the HOW in the values and the vision-- Keep the purpose pure.

God's Work in Progress- Are You Created for a Core Purpose?

What I have been referring to as your Core Purpose, is also your Life's Work. We are each created to work, as we learn in Genesis 2. But we learn further in Ephesian Chapter 2 that ¹⁰For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Now here is the distinction. Every person has the same eternal purpose: which is To know, love and serve God. Never doubt that. The question is What are we here FOR? How does our life add value, and how does it advance the Kingdom? What is the basis for God's plan (Jer 29:11) for our lives? These plans that God has for us, to proper us and give us a future and a hope, these plans are the “paths of righteousness that God leads us down” (Ps 23:3). And our obligation in this work he is given us to do is to "do it with all of our might". (Ecc9:10). This means to bring our whole selves to the work, mind, body, soul.

The existence of a Core Purpose in you is found through the four pillars of understanding, I use and was taught- The Bible, Tradition, Experience and Reason. These four are explained simply and are a mechanism that is very useful in understanding and finding truth: The Bible is the scripture which I use extensively to make the case for Core Purpose. God has a purpose to SAVE us, and give a rich and full life. And we look at history and we see God working in the lives of others and we see the patterns of their work and success. But we also experience life in ways that are meaningful and we can compare what others have done with God, and how God has used us. And as we examine the Bible verses, compare what they say to our observations with what God did with Paul or Peter or Billy Graham and others in their lives, and think about how He has inserted Himself into our lives....we see that there really is this distinction we each have that makes our life unique which God prepares for us to do and which when we do it, God is glorified and we are effective. So what are these works comprised of? Are these works based on anything that makes any sense? (Reason). Would God give a tone deaf person “singing” as a work to do with all their might? Do the works that God has for us to do have any continuity at all, or are they just random tasks?
Think for a moment of something you do. Where what you is done very well and you feel effortless in doing. There is something that is true for you in this way. And think also of a situation in your life that resonated in your heart, where what you experienced was warm and affirming, when what was going on seemed “right”.

Two Components:

Core Competence- that natural innate ability you have that is always being applied. It is your default life skill that you apply in all situations. It’s so automatic, you can't NOT do it. Mine is "understanding" as it relates to individuals and groups. In any situation, my default is to ask, what is really going in this person or group? What is the core motivation, or concern? Where is this person headed in this situation or their life? Is this group functioning well? Is it productive? This person seems "frozen" why? Your Spiritual Gifts also align perfectly with this Core Competence. Wisdom and Discernment are two of mine. Make sense? Here is a question that applies reason: Why would

God prepare works for you to do that don't also fit how he has created you? Why would a loving God set you up to fail? He would not.

Core Passion- Passion is the "desire of your heart- Ps 20:4 May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed. Ps 37:4 Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. There is in us a desire, a passion, a care a concern regarding how things "ought to be". This desire is fundamental and is pervasive across our lives. My friend Bev desires that people know the truth, or that the lies in people lives be destroyed. My wife loves it when all things "work together" when things are effective. I love it when a person or group moves "forward" in the direction they are pursuing or are called towards. Julie love it when the solution makes things better. (not all do.)

When these two come together it looks like this:

CP= CC X CP or Core Purpose is your Core Competence, multiplied by or enhanced or focused by your Core Passion. When you use something your are really great at and apply it towards what you really care about, your success is enhanced to the degree that you have JOY!

God's Work in Progress- Core Purpose and Calling

Here is an insight which I think is very powerful. A Core Purpose applies to the entirety of your life, not just your job. Your Core Purpose is the primary means of your effectiveness, it is your life's on-going outcome, the accomplishment you are equipped to bring to the situations you are in. Whenever you allow yourself to drift from it you become less and less effective. For example you might be asked to address a situation in which your core passion is touched deeply but your core competence would not apply. If you say yes, and you should not unless you have clear direction from God, you will be frustrated as you will be involved with the issue or matter you care deeply about but you will be largely ineffective at helping. (Sometimes this is ok because God is doing something that will lead you to a full application later on. But again, only do so if God is saying yes.) So living your purpose fully is the key.

The same with Calling. If God calls you to do a particular work (go to Iraq) or into a particular field, (join the Army) don't forget that you are to solely and fully apply your Core Purpose to that calling. Don't deviate from it or you will be ineffective. And if you truly have identified your purpose, you will have PLENTY to do, rest assured. A Core Purpose is a limited, limitless path. Since I have discovered mine and devoted it to God by asking, seeking, and knocking Him for the plans he has for me, for the "works he has prepared in advance for me to do, I have had NO lack of work and the work my hands have been given to do are very satisfying and I am very effective in it. And most of all I have great joy...

"God's Work in Progress" is a radio program that has been in existence since October 5th 2009. I've produced 42 shows on The World Talk Radio Network. Click here to listen.

I have discontinued producing new shows on World Talk as I found that I didn't align well with the other programs there despite having the BEST Exec Producer (Mark Pace) in the business, and felt called to move it. Since that time I have developed an agreement with the local Salem Communications affiliate, a Christian Station here in MN, to do the show over the air with the possibility of syndication. To put the show on the air I have developed a business model that provides Christian Business Owners and Christian "work-faith" Ministries the opportunity to join with me on the air on a regular basis, to advance the cause of "integrating excellence in faith and work." . Based on the Business' or Ministries' degree of participation they can BOTH advance the cause I just described by discussing with me on air, AND advance their business' success (through promoting it on air and with recommendations by your humble host).

This presents the Business or Ministry a TWO-FER. God is all about Two-fers.

This business model has degrees or levels of participation and cost which provide opportunities for different budgets, ranging from $150 to $1000 per month. The amount of exposure and the degree of on-air time are all based on where the "partners" participation lies along this grid. God's Work in Progress- The Essentials

Essentials

Prov 13:4 The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied

I am all about helping people and organizations fulfill their potential. Based on my knowledge and experience, for you or your company or organization to become truly great you must press in to every situation and get to what I call the “essentials”.

Essentials are those ideas or that understanding that make up the fabric or essence of what you do. This is why it is so important that your core values and your organization’s purpose be true, authentic, based on reality and NOT aspirational. If you don’t go through the hard work to determining what your purpose and values really ARE, you risk being called hypocritical, “do what I say not as I do.” There is no quicker way to waste your time and energy. You need a valid process, and a facilitator who understands and will not “let you off the hook” until to get to this core.

Once this core is established you will still have problems. Problems have their own core or root cause. Truly solving them is the key to actually getting better because “if you always do what you always did, you always get what you always got.’ So here is technique that may help. I suggest what has come to be called the “5 Whys”. Generally you keep asking the question why about the situation, based on the answer you get and the idea is that it takes about “Five Whys” to get to the root. It can go like this:

Problem Statement: You are on your way home from work and your car stops in the middle of the road.
1. Why did your car stop?
  - Because it ran out of gas.
2. Why did it run out of gas?
  - Because I didn't buy any gas on my way to work.
3. Why didn't you buy any gas this morning?
  - Because I didn't have any money.
4. Why didn't you have any money?
  - Because I spent it bowling the night before.
5. Why did you spend your money on bowling?
  - Because my friends called me and said there was a two for one deal, and I thought I could make it on the gas I had so I went bowling instead of buying the gas.

A problem, by definition, is the difference between what you want to happen and what is actually happening (or happened). The difference in the above example is the habit of impulsiveness. This problem became the difference between having gas and not having gas. That habit, that addiction, is the problem because it led to a wrong choice. The “difference” is the problem.

Once you identify the problem there is the essential idea of getting to it’s root or cause. The 5 Why’s are a very good tool to accomplish this. Be sure to ask the questions with the intent of solving the problem, NOT in finding the guilty party. The 5 Why’s are really a technique that helps people to see the real value of getting to the root of the matter. If people are “grilled” or if they feel like you are “prosecuting” them they will not participate. The point is that if you do it focused on WHAT happened not on WHO”s wrong, you will eventually have the 2 Why’s or the 1 Why to get the root.

And, quite frankly if you focus on WHAT versus WHO you build TRUST as your people or friends will realize that you just want to get to the root of the problem and help them to solve it.

⁷“Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? ⁸Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? ⁹Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? ¹⁰So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’ ”

Luke 17

Of course the present day employee is the slave- But notice the lack of reward for merely following orders. Gratitude of course.

But unless a person brings more than is asked, Jesus says no special recognition is warranted.

I bring this up to point that the Lord has a definition of excellence--- in 1 Cor 12 it is “surpassing”…. Beyond … when Paul writes now I will show you the most “excellent” (surpassing) way or method .

In our work as managers and leaders we ought not reward that which is expected. We ought to appreciate it, and be grateful, and say so, but reward should come when someone goes “beyond” what is expected. Of course this implies that we also identify and communicate clearly what is expected.

A Rising Sea is Coming

I believe a rising sea level is coming for the Marketplace. The idea of a world where people know their Life's Work (c) and live life intentionally is becoming more and more real to me. As I help people to understand their Life's Work and they internalize it, they begin to think more creatively and effectively and work within the boundaries that cause that. I see movement in government to make government more effective, I see people gathering around the idea of effective enterprise in business, education, government, media\arts, etc, and pursuing this effectiveness with a Holy attitude. The challenge for us all is to pursue this effectiveness with humility, that is, a true knowledge of where our success comes from. (Deut 8.) Humility is the only answer to the idolatry that accompanies nearly all success.
Effectiveness is true excellence. You and I are not asked by God to perfect in the sense of without flaw or error. Were that true, forgiveness would not be central part of the Christian faith. No, we are asked to become complete- as intended- fully ourselves, just as God is fully himself. This is what is meant when the Bible says be perfect, as He is perfect. The word means fully who you are intended to be. God is this, and we are asked to become are tiny limited version of the same. Our Life's Work- to learn it and fully bring it to the world, to develop and use the Gifts of the Spirit, and to fully develop the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. When these three are in place, we become, over time, more fully ourselves.

So as people become all they are intended to become, the sea level will begin to rise. I can feel it, I can hear God and see God moving-

Politics Anyone?

Is there room for politics in Christianity? Well that depends on what you mean by politics.

Let me offer you three definitions: one generic, one secular, and one Christian, and you can decide for yourself:

Generic: Politics- The art of persuasion using discussion and other media.

Secular Politics .- the art of persuading others, especially those in power to secure or maintain advantage or gain- persuading people towards the fulfillment of a personal agenda. What we call politics in government would be an example.

Christian Politics defined- The art of exchange and discussion of ideas, principles and methods with the intent of finding the highest and best of these, for the good of all. In this ideal state, the rightness of the idea or principle “is revealed” and we “are persuaded” by that rightness. An example of this would the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15.

PS- the word translated faith- comes from the verb- "I persuade"- so to believe or have faith means to be persuaded. So as Christians, when we are evangelizing, we are practicing a form of politics. :)

What is this radio program FOR?
You may know (some of you do) that this is much more than a radio program. This program is a launching pad for a vision- A VISION THAT I CALL RIGHTEOUS FREE ENTERPRISE, There is a way of doing business and behaving in the marketplace that is profitable, joyful, spirit-filled, ethical, productive, valuable, relevant----- And it is NOT pie in the sky. It is a focused, deliberate way of building and operating your business or organization that can be understood, and done and is NOT difficult.

Righteous Free Enterprise is God’s plan for the marketplace… but if that’s true why is business and profit portrayed as evil?

So, why do people think businesses are evil???? Why do some people think profit is bad?

Here are some reasons, from both sides of those questions. The short answer is because evil is real. Here are some others: Some people in business are selfish greed-based people. And many people see work as something they HAVE to do. Many people are envious of people who have money and make biased negative judgments about them because they are jealous. Many people who think profits are bad are egalitarians, who are for not just equal opportunity they are for equal outcomes. – believing everyone should have their “fair” share—which is code for- the same as everybody else-, except of course the people who think this. J

People think profit is bad because historically there are many examples where people were exploited, earning subsistence wages, while a few got rich; in the coal mines of Appalachia and the sweat shops, when little or no opportunity existed. Of course those days are all but over- because of the ability to expose them and address them. The media is powerful and we can now see and judge things for ourselves. And we can see that the world has changed a great deal and there has never been more opportunity.

Literally we are in a time where the vast percentage (say 90-95%) of people can learn and grow and become contributing members of society, if they choose to. The key to unlock your potential is in your pocket!

But let me also say this—the divisions about economics and what is righteous and just economically is NOT the work of humanity. The division that exists in this country and in the world- is the work of powers and principalities whose leader is the Father of Lies- whose LIFE’s WORK is to steal kill and destroy the Kingdom of God and those who follow the King. If you stop and look-- it is obvious--- Diabolos is his name- his name means literally “to cast apart- or to cast through- he is best at and developed the idea of “Divide and Conquer”. So he imparts lies and falsehoods meant to keep people from finding and fulfilling their potential. And he KNOWS what the world would be like of each person followed Christ and if each of us knew and lived his\her Life’s Purpose- And he does NOT want Righteous Free Enterprise- he wants impotent counterfeits like Socialisim and Communism- where man-made governments try to manage the accumulation and distribution of wealth, so that NO ONE goes without---- they are counterfeits- they seem right, sound right, fair, just, but they are, in the end, a lie, unable to deliver on their promises; just as a Godless FREE MARKET cannot.

No the answer is Righteous Free Enterprise- It is the most just, most productive, most profitable, most joyful WAY and is above all the other ways--- the surpassing way...What God calls Excellence—the way that is beyond all the other ways. And as I said it is NOT hidden, not a SECRET--- and can be found in the pages of the Bible.

God has been stirring it up for about 16 years when there were 70 workplace ministries, and today there are close to 1000!!!!!! If that doesn’t indicate a movement is under way I don’t know what does. So welcome to the movement!!!God has given it a name- Righteous Free Enterprise- Let’s examine it.

Righteousness- God's will and wisdom, understood, expressed and applied in all of life, especially in the marketplace. He wants everything we do to be devoted to HIS will and plan, which is just and right and Good, and knowable.

Freedom- Freedom is power. We think independently therefore we are free. This freedom of thought, is the foundation of all of our freedom- Freedom of thought is the foundation; we THINK freely, therefore we can speak freely and therefore we can ACT freely- This freedom is the empowerment for love- which is and must be FREELY given. True freedom is Christ’s freedom, free from bondage, free from sin, free to become fully who we are created to become.

Enterprise- the creation of endeavors in the marketplace- the exchange of money, goods, services, ideas and information in business, government, social endeavors, and education etc. . These Enterprises come from WHO we are, what we are great at and what we are truly passionate about- both of which are given by God.

So, I see a world system that is completely overcome and restored to this plan God has. In God’s plan His will, his vision, his results are the focus. This is true in all ways in all parts of life, especially in the marketplace- The marketplace is this exchange of goods, services, ideas, and information in business, education and government.

I see a world in which we all know God’s purpose for our lives and where that purpose determines our “life’s work”.

I see a world where this purpose governs career choices especially in the marketplace or enterprises of life. I see that in enterprises of life are more relational than church in a lot respects, especially in frequency. That the opportunity for positive change and growth and success and holiness is limitless in our enterprise relationships.
I see that Enterprise will be a forum in which excellence can truly become normal because we spend more time, and have more opportunity to impact life within the context of enterprise, than in any other aspect of life. As much as 60% of most people's awake time is spent, at work, in school, out and in the world system.

I see a world where we are each truly free from bondage of all types, free from greed, free to create to dream God’s dreams and build God’s plans. I see a world in which people's life's work, their purpose, (the works God has prepared in advance for them to do) is the only force driving their life. Since this purpose comes from God and is given by God, it should only be used for God. I see a world in which we all realize that our Life’s Work , aligns perfectly with God’s overall eternal purpose to save the world, and bring the complete joy of the Kingdom to it. I see a world in which transactions in all respects are win-win; that win-lose might occur circumstantially, but never with the intent of causing it. I see a world in which people build one another up.

I see a world where everyone focuses on fulfilling their own potential and never in a way that causes another to fail; where each person is not only concerned with there own interests, but also in the interests of others. The Church is the main catalyst for God's plan for Righteous Free Enterprise to be brought to its fulfillment- requires that we see Eph 4: 11-16 as the blueprint for the church's role. And in a world where Righteous Free Enterprise is the NORM, all power: intellectual, physical, economic, etc serves one purpose- it is used to empower people- intellectually, financially, physically, emotionally, and of course spiritually.

This is the beginning of our understanding.

Life's Purpose- the GPS of your life's actions

Purpose as I define it is the foundational driving force in your life, which comes out of you. It is already there. It is not external like a call or a mission or vision, and is placed in everyone by God. It drives your lives it is the fuel in your person’s engine. Want Proof?

Jesus’ purpose- to seek and save the lost.

If you unpack "save" you will see lots of sub-goals and visions and such. And this purpose drove his time on Earth and and continues to drive it even now.

Satan’s purpose- to steal kill and destroy. Don't have to unpack this.

Here's a flash- Satan and his helpers have been working full time making sure that people do NOT find their Life's Purpose. Believe me he knows what the world would be like if we all knew and lived God's Purpose for our lives and it scares him to death. His primary focus has been to prevent this from happening.

Unpacking and Finding Your Life's Purpose

I have observed a lot of books and seminars that have the intent of helping people find their life's purpose. I think this is great. I also think it is very important that we define what we mean by purpose. Most of the reading equates purpose with calling. I believe strongly that this is a mistake. Calling is not a life's work. One can be called for a given work, such as writing a book or starting a church or going on a mission field, or starting a company and then that calling changes. This happens a lot and sometimes these callings take a lifetime. Sometimes callings take a lifetime and they should not. Many callings are interim challenges God gives us which have an end point. But your Life's Purpose does not change if it is a LIFE'S purpose. Right? So if a calling can end or change, then a calling can't be our purpose. Callings are more like a goal or a vision or mission. It can last a lifetime but sometimes is does not. So I think a calling a vocation, is very important but I believe a calling is an EXPRESSION of purpose, not our purpose.

Another common teaching is that our Spiritual Gifts determine our Life's Purpose or that BOTH calling and gifts together determine it. This I believe is also not accurate. Alongside the above idea of calling is the distribution of gifting by the Holy Spirit. Gifts, are not us, they are God IN us. They exist for the "building up of the Body"- They are extremely important in God's plan for the world and have a role to play in our Life's Purpose but they are not our purpose in my view. Gifts are a tool box to be used to advance God's purpose, which is -to seek and save the lost- so that we might KNOW him-- and come to a knowledge of the truth--- and as such they have a big role to play in our Life's Purpose advances God's plan for the world and our lives, but they are NOT our purpose.

Which brings us to purpose-

Our Life's Purpose is our Life's Work- it is, in its essence, an intense focus of how we are supposed to live our lives day to day- it is clarity, an application of our lives that makes us extremely effective, it is the source of provision and when we devote it BACK to God, it also makes us very effective co-laborers with Christ in saving the world.

I have helped a hundred or so people to find their purpose and almost every single time they cry. And the people whom I know, including myself, who have discovered their life's purpose, live a very focused, driven life. Not a life of compulsion, but a life that has very specific direction and guidance. When you discover your life's purpose your life changes permanently because purpose is the narrow path. It is an unlimited limited way, the most excellent way, and it is the way beyond all the other ways.

Here is the substance of your Life's Purpose or Work, which is the foundation and focus of our lives.

Core Competence- In each of us there is a foundational skill or ability that is at the ROOT of every other skill we have. It is something that is so natural, so common to us, that most people don't see it. It is in use all the time and you don't even think about doing it because is is so natural. The people around you know it, ask them.

Core Passion- There is, residing in EVERY person's heart an eternal care or concern that is primal and that when it is met, all seems right with the world. It is a care or concern that when it is being addressed time seems to stop, or your sense of it diminishes. It is something you are always thinking about and winds its way into your thinking and reading and conversations in a default way. It is a foundational concern that God has placed on your heart. If you have "many" of them there is something, some primal concern that links them all together. This is your CORE passion.

Your Life's Work, your Life's Purpose is "discovered" not created. It already exists. And here is how you discover it:

You apply your Core Competence (the natural foundational ability you are naturally great at), to your Core Passion (your external foundational concern for the world around you.)

When you apply your core competence to that core passion concern that is fundamental in your heart you stop "working". You have found your Life's Work, and this work is your primary work and all "works that have been prepared in advance" for you to do, come out of this Life's Work.

Think about your life for a minute- Think about the times when you were most effective-when you firing on all cylinders. That was a time when this very purpose was happening. God reveals these moments to show it to you.

Now when you discover your purpose you can live more intentionally, and you can make decisions on purpose, and you should. Your purpose gives you permission to say yes to work that aligns with it, and no to work that does not. In fact you almost have an obligation NOT to do work that conflicts with your purpose. When you are doing work that aligns with your purpose what you do is more meaningful, and you have JOY.

Here's a plan. Get on your knees and thank God for your purpose. Devote it to Him, dedicate it to him. Ask him to release the work that He has prepared in advance, ask him to show you the Plans He has for you to prosper you and give you a future and a hope. And He will.

God's Work In Progress- Integrating Excellence in Faith and Work

On the April 5th program we discussed ways to help you to integrate excellence in faith and work. Any area of life in which we exclude God, is a form of Idolatry. In this program we seek to help you to have God's excellence in both work and faith.

I defined excellence as that which surpasses or is beyond everything else. Not perfection as only God is perfect. But excellence has to do with fulfilling potential, when something has attained its ultimate state this side of heaven.

Excellence in faith is attained by "walking with God" (Gal 5), that is , living your life with the Holy Spirit as your adviser and guide as you use the gifts and talents and skill and paasion that God has given you. (These together are your Life's Purpose) I mentioned a Daily Office as key. Pray to God a scripture that speaks to your heart. "God, please help me trust in you with all of my heart and not lean on my own understanding"...... would be a good example as it helps us to rely on HIM and walk with Him. Praying continually as Paul said.... an ongoing conversation with God, is another way to achieve excellence in faith. Also you need a Bible STUDY method instead of just reading the Bible- The two main tools for this are two questions- "What is the Bible plainly saying as you read a passage or book." and What does what it say, MEAN?

The surrounding passages are key to understanding what it says, as is the book its in and the testament its in. But the point of understanding (vs accurately hearing what it says) what the Bible means is this question: what was God trying to say in what Paul wrote? Not what was Paul trying to say, what was God trying to say in what Moses wrote? James wrote? etc.

If you walk with God, you have an enhanced ability to understand the Bible, from God's perspective. Begin with what it says plainly, then look into the language, look at what the classical commentators have said, what does your own Bible say in the "notes"? Look at what it might have meant at the time it was written?

On two previous occasions I have had representatives from C12 Group on God's Work In Progress. The first show on October 26th was Steve Hase, VP of Development who had came on to talk about C12 and about the position of "Chair" and how C12 is looking to develop a C12 Group for every 50,000 people in the country. The second show featured Don Barefoot President of C12 Group who discussed the purpose and vision of C12 Group and his own testimony in advancing its vision.
