The one-piece dress featured a high neck and straight skirt. It covered all of a woman’s body except for her head, hands, and toes. The qipao was traditionally made of silk and featured intricate embroidery.
The qipao worn today are modeled after ones made in Shanghai in the 1920s. The modern qipao is a one-piece, formfitting, floor length dress that has a high slit on one or both sides. Modern variations may have bell sleeves or be sleeveless and are made out of a variety of fabrics.
In the 17th century, the qipao was worn nearly every day. Nowadays, the qipao is worn during formal occasions like weddings, parties, and beauty pageants. The qipao is also used as a uniform at restaurants, hotels, and on airplanes in Asia. During Manchu rule, Nurhachi (努爾哈赤, N?'?rh?chi), a chieftan, established the Banner System, a structure for organizing all Manchu families into administrative divisions. The traditional dress that Manchu women wore became known as the qipao (旗袍, banner gown).
After 1636, all Han Chinese men in the banner system had to wear the male version of the qipao, changpao (長袍). In the 1920s in Shanghai, the dress was modernized and became popular among celebrities and the upper class. The dress became less popular when Communist rule began in 1949. The Shanghainese took the dress to Hong Kong where it remained popular in the 1950s with working women who often paired it with a jacket. An off-the-rack qipao can cost about $100 while tailor made ones can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars.
Elements of traditional Chinese dress often seen in the qipao, like high colors and embroidery, are now incorporated into everyday wear by design houses like Shanghai Tang. Simpler, inexpensive designs can also be bought online.

View the original article here

<!--

The festival marks the end of the celebrations of the Chinese New Year.
Chinese started to celebrate the Lantern Festival from the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 221 AD). Like most other Chinese festivals, there is also a story behind the Festival. It is also believed that the festival has Taoist origins.
This is a festival for people having fun. On the night of the festival, people go on streets with a variety of lanterns under the full moon, watching lions or dragon dancing, playing Chinese riddles and games, and lighting up firecrackers. There is really a lot of fun for the young and the old. The festival is not well celebrated in the US, though you may find celebrations in some Chinese communities, such as Hsi Lai Temple, Hacienda Heights, California.
Yuanxiao (glutinous rice ball) or Tangyuan is the special food for the Lantern Festival. It is believed that Yuanxiao is named after a palace maid, Yuanxiao, of Emperor Wu Di of the Han Dynasty. Yuanxiao is a kind of sweet dumpling, which is made with sticky rice flour filled with sweet stuffing. And the festival is named after the famous dumpling. Yuanxiao is sticky, sweet and round in shape, symbolizing family unity, completeness and happiness.
You can find Yuanxiao in oriental food stores. If you enjoy cooking, here is a recipe of Yuanxiao for you.
Ingredients
?4 1/2 cups (500 g) sticky rice flour
butter 7 oz (200 g)
black sesame powder 7 oz (200 g)
sugar 8 oz (250 g)
1 tsp wine
Methods
?1. Mix the butter with sesame powder, sugar and wine together. You need to heat a little bit. Make small balls about 0.3-0.4 oz (10 g) each.
2. Take 1/2 cup of sticky rice flour. Add water into the flour and make a flatten dough. Cook it in boiled water and take out until done. Let it cool down. Then put it in the rest of the sticky rice flour. Add water and knead until the dough is smooth.
3. Make the dough into small pieces about 0.3-0.4 oz (10 g) each. Make it like a ball using hands first and then make a hole in the ball like a snail. Put the sesame ball into it and close it up.
4. Cook them in boiled water. Make sure to keep stirring in one direction while cooking. When they float on the water, continue to boil for about one minute using less heat.
Related Links:
Chinese Folk Lantern Festival
Chinese New Year Index
To learn everything here about Chinese New Year.
zSbL=3;zSB(2);zSbL=0check_modal();zCi();validateForms();splitLists();if(this.zKW&&gEI('sv'))gEI('sv').value=zE(zE(zKW,1),1).replace(new RegExp('\\+','g'),' ')

View the original article here

<!--

It is hard to guess how many dialects exist, but they can be roughly classified into one of the seven large groups, i.e., Putonghua (Mandarin), Gan, Kejia (Hakka), Min, Wu, Xiang and Yue (Cantonese). Each language group contains a large number of dialects. These are the Chinese languages spoken mostly by the Han people, which represents about 92 percent of the total population. We will not get into the non-Chinese languages spoken by the minorities here, such as Tibetan, Mongolian and Miao.
The dialects from the seven groups are quite different. For example, a Mandarin speaker in northern China usually understands little Cantonese, but a non-Mandarin speaker usually can speak some Mandarin with a strong accent. This is largely because Mandarin has been the official national language since 1913. Mandarin or Putonghua is mainly based on the Beijing dialect. Despite the large differences among Chinese dialects, there is one thing in common for them -- they all share the same writing system based on Chinese characters.
A distinguishing feature of the Chinese languages is tonal. Mandarin has four tones and Cantonese has more than four tones.
Oracle Bone Inscriptions
Origin of Chinese Characters
Frequently Asked Chinese Characters

View the original article here

<!--

Please read the article I wrote last year for more information about Chinese New Year.
As you know, this is the Year of the Rabbit or the 4697th Year based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Chinese name twelve animals representing 12 years in a cycle. It is noted that the twelve animals are closely associated with the Earthly Branches, Yin/Yang, and the Five Elements. This is summarized in the following table.
For an example, the Zi hour (11pm - 1am), is the Rat hour since the Rat is usually associated with the Yin element, such as darkness, stillness, and deceit. This is the opposite with the Wu hour (11am - 1pm) when the Yang reaches its highest point, so the horse is associated with the Wu as he is fast, robust, and swift.
The cycle of the twelve animals may be used to tell the personalities and fortunes of a person born in a particular year and hour based on the table above. This practice has a long history and there are still many Chinese using it. The characteristics of the animals are summarized in the table here.
For more information, check out the following links:
About Chinese New Year
New Year Greeting Cards Chinese New Year Calendar Chinese New Year Posts Zodiac and Predictions Chinese New Year Food and Recipes Chinese New Year Stamps Other Info about Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year Index
To learn everything here about Chinese New Year.
zSbL=3;zSB(2);zSbL=0check_modal();zCi();validateForms();splitLists();if(this.zKW&&gEI('sv'))gEI('sv').value=zE(zE(zKW,1),1).replace(new RegExp('\\+','g'),' ')

View the original article here

<!--

Knowing your zodiac sign, element and predisposition (hot, cold, or neutral) are all used to determine your fortune. Consulting a Chinese almanac like 2011 Chinese Almanac by Peter So (ISBN 978-988-1905-6-9) or a fortune teller will help you find a detailed, more personal fortune.

The 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle also includes a corresponding element; therefore, it takes 60 years to complete an entire zodiac cycle. Each Chinese zodiac sign has a general 2011 fortune plus an additional 2011 fortune based on the person’s birth year. All months referenced refer to the lunar month.

Monkeys are likely to:
Maintain the status quo in terms of job and romance.Work harder for your money. Not get laid off in 2011.Have accidents or injuries in summer and autumn, so be careful during these seasons.Have more expenses than usual, so set aside money for unexpected expenses.
Your additional fortune by birth year is:
1932: You don’t want to work hard and prefer to stay indoors this year. Be sure to go out in public to avoid depression.
1944: You’ll work hard for your money in 2011.
1956: It’s your year of wealth.
1968: You’ll have chances to learn or invest in 2011.
1980: Your income will be proportional to your workload and life should be stable this year.
1992: You’ll experience something new. Your luck at exams is so-so.
2004: You get along with everyone at school, so you enjoy school.
Disclaimer: Consulting a Chinese almanac like 2011 Chinese Almanac by Peter So (ISBN 978-988-1905-6-9) or a fortune teller will help you find a detailed, more personal fortune.
