An average PC is typically 39% steel, 30-41% plastic, 10% aluminum and 10% other metals, including copper, gold, silver, cadmium, and platinum.
Only 11% of PCs retired in the United States were recycled in 2001.
Every 4 months, Americans landfill enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet.

Everyday, one PC becomes obsolete for every PC that is placed on the market for sale. When you consider that millions of desktop PCs are sold each year, the number that end up in landfills is stunning. It's been estimated that as many as two-thirds of all computers ever manufactured still await some type of disposal.
PCs present a special challenge because their hardware is toxic. A standard monitor along can come packed with up to 9 pounds of lead and other heavy metals. Some of the other murderous elements include nickel-cadmium and mercury. All of these are treated as poison by the human body. If ingested, they can cause all manner of health problems, including central nervous system damage. Lead, for example, has no way to leave the human body once it finds it way into it. So an affected person forever must live with the toxin, forever.

Hello there! My name is Melissa. I'm a 21 year old female living in Mobile, Alabama. I'm a mother of one beautiful 3 year old girl, an acoustic songwriter/musician, and I have the biggest heart for saving the planet of unwanted waste from PCs and electronics in landfills. The EPA estimates that 75 percent of our waste is recyclable. Recycling is the process of taking a product at the end of its useful life and using it to make another product. The symbol for recycling includes three arrows moving in a triangle. Each arrow represents a different part of the recycling process, from collection to re-manufacture to resale. Recycling reduces our waste sent to landfills and reduces the amount of energy needed to produce new products.

Recycling serves two key purposes:

1. It keeps material such as aluminum and paper out of landfills, so this material can be reused in other forms, not wasted.
2. It prevents hazardous materials and chemicals such as mercury and lead from ending up in landfills, which can contaminate soil and seep into our drinking water.

The donation will be used to fund a recycling operation which collects obsolete electronics and computer equipment, for re-purposing and recycling. A breakdown of the budget is as follows:

$1000 - Licensing and incorporation fees
$3000 - Purchase of a used work van
$2000 - Two-months rent for a warehouse
$2000 - Initial shipping and export costs
$1000 - Electronics repair workstation
$1000 - Data scrubbing work stations
$1000 - Hosting and communication expenses
$1000 - Miscellaneous tools and supplies
$1000 - Gasoline and other energy expenses
$1000 - Initial marketing and promotion
$4000 - Part-time employment opportunities

Any additional or unused donations will be allocated to areas which benefit from increased funding, such as workstation upgrades, and community recycling awareness.
