Living Life...Living Room and Inspiring Others

I am loving lavender lately and found the prettiest roses in soft lavender tones tipped with pink once again this week...

Lavender antique French plates, such a beautiful colorway combined with these roses...

Floral arranging makes life complete for me...

Loving light pouring in from the windows. Look hard and you'll see the American flag hung out in front of our home...

Me and the pups...Darby and Bartley. They are quite a handful at 3 months young, babies really. I adore these two and they bring so much joy to our lives!

I am always so pleased to be invited to contribute to Creating Vintage Charm magazine and this issue is the BEST yet! I have had so many blessings come my way over the years and feel a deep sense of gratification and am quite honored to inspire this way.

Yes, it's true...I have been sorely neglecting the website and really need to get back to that, but it's becoming increasingly more difficult to do everything that needs to be done in that aspect of business with the burgeoning photography end of things to work on. I just noticed that I haven't even updated the year on the website to reflect that I've been on the internet this year of 2013~ it still says 1999~2012. HELLO!!

We have been working on designing custom linens for several months and a portion of them are now in with more on the way. Here is a bit of what will be added soon, quantities will be limited, made in the U.S and utmost professional quality pieces all with our own twist...

About That French Television Shoot and Giveaway Winner

It's been crazy busy around here this week, and with the French television shoot wrapped up I hope to relax this weekend and enjoy spending time with the family. Who ever thought that I would hear the words...."action", "cut" and "it's a wrap", certainly a bit surreal!

If you are wondering what exactly this was about, my husband and I were invited to be filmed for a day by Planete TV in France about life and opportunities in Miami for successful business people. Quite an honor, mais bien sur!

I don't know exactly when it will be on television, but will be sometime in June...only shown in France. I will be receiving a DVD so will share a snippet here if I can.

Lots of cleaning, styling and arranging...flowers in all stages from drying to fresh.

The living room....added a few touches and moved a few things around...

The dining area and kitchen....food, florals and candles...

Master bedroom....fluffed with feminine detail...

I was filmed shooting a Miami home as a photographer, which is actually a home that I recently shot for the magazine Maison Romantique that will be on the news stands I believe next week in France...

Recent Magazine Photo Shoots...French TV...And A Quick GIVEAWAY!

With many trips overseas over the years under my belt, and spending a couple summers of my youth living in Paris it seems that I continue to maintain a strong European connection even now. May Day Vintage Millinery Crown Tutorial

Happy May Day to everyone! I'm not going to go into an explanation of the holiday, as it's easy to find lots of that on Wikepedia or the internet. I will however share a project that I've personally done off and on for many years though certainly did not invent!

I have collected vintage millinery for a long time and have a huge stash!

For this easy project you will need:
A vintage hat that has a "crown" type of structure...turn the hat over to see.
You can also form something similar with pipe cleaners if you have the time.

Additional assorted millinery or new flowers found at the craft store (I've
used vintage exclusively in this project)

Tulle, marabou, feathers, rhinestones and other decorative bits and bobs. Hot glue gun, wire snips

Start by pulling all of the millinery off your hat.

This can sometimes be tricky as the milliner's glue hardens over time, so use care and small embroidery scissors when necessary.
Turn the hat form base upside down once you've pulled off the flowers and fit it like a crown to your head. Snip the back part of the form (usually wire covered in felt) with your wire snips to make two parts on the back that will have your ribbon ties.
Once the form appears to fit like a crown, hot glue your flowers etc into place as you like. Be sure to keep checking to see how it looks on your head as you work. When you are satisfied with the look, cut long enough strands of ribbon to wrap on the back structure of the crown to tie it to your head. Be generous with the ribbon...it looks best when flowing down! Make sure to cover any sharp ends from cutting the wire with the ribbon and affix in place with a dab of hot glue.

Now it's time to have fun and wear...

Sharing Photo Shoots And Exciting News!

I have lots of exciting news to share with you today my friends...it's all good and another of my "picture heavy" posts!

It's been a magical experience for me to work with a couple of amazing homeowners in both styling and photographing their lovely homes, and to sprinkle a little fairy dust to help them fulfill their dreams of publication at the same time! Goodness knows I have certainly had my home published in numerous magazines over the years and it's still always exciting and I am grateful for every opportunity that has come my way.

This beautiful Florida home belongs to my sweet and lovely friend Ilene Zelaya who is an avid collector of antique china, paintings, and all things romantic. The home is elegant and cozy, and filled with beauty in every corner from her years of collecting. The shoot is published in Maison Romantique (at this time:-), which is only available in France.

Another Florida cottage that belongs to the beautiful and talented Drena Bathemess (Glamourustique) which she fondly calls Oak Tree Cottage. Drena is a huge fan of the Shabby Chic style and with her British roots it all comes together so well. Her home is proudly featured in the new Shabby Style magazine (at this time:-), which currently is only available in France.

I'm also happy to have some of my photography in the new French Country Style magazine, which is available in the U.S. These were shots that I took at some French flea markets a few years back and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have these shots featured.

Saving the most EXCITING NEWS for last....we are flying to Atlanta on Saturday to pick up our two new babies!

If you've been with me for any length of time now you know that we had a darling Cavalier boy named Murphy that we lost just about 2 years ago now. Time heals and we are finally ready to take on these siblings....and of course I'll keep you updated on their future progress.

Beach House Blues

The weekend is here and I'm sharing a few images that I shot earlier today while I'm up here at our beach home.

A couple of months ago I posted HERE about replacing a big box store television cabinet with a table that we built using one spotted at Restoration Hardware as our muse. We finally brought the table up to the beach and I've been working on decluttering and styling the table.

I've been searching for just the right antique painted cabinet with authentic chippy paint to store some of these things in and have yet to find one!! Why is it, when you look you can't find? Until I do....it's still a bit cluttered, but coming together for now...

Pastel Bedroom Love....And Unique Dreamcatcher Inspiration

I've been working hard on organizing our home for Spring...and something else that I'll share with you in a few weeks and very excited about that is sure to keep me busy for awhile!

This morning I worked in the bedroom and then took a petite break to get some fresh air in the garden out back. Everything looks so pretty out there right now, and we have lots of flowers in bloom. It got me thinking that I wanted to spruce up the bedroom with more color in Spring tones.

I started by cutting some of the rich purple flowers out back and adding them to an antique lavender glass pitcher that was in my prop closet for a pop of deeper color. I love to style in threes....so took some cardboard vintage wallpaper containers leftover from candles and filled with vintage millinery that I collect (hoard:-)...

Something fresh was in order to hang over the bed....fresh and Spring infused...

Once again I turned to my trusted prop area, and used several of my vintage botanical floral prints that are part of a portfolio book I sourced years ago on an antiquing jaunt. The prints are all in plastic sleeves and I want to preserve them, so added some double sided wall mounting tape to the back of each...

Next came one of those ideas that just popped into my head, and I took a couple of embroidery hoops and sandwiched an antique French lace bed cap in between each of the hoops on both. Once again I collect these and don't want to damage, so this is a great way to display without doing so. A bit of old tulle hangs from one to give it a "dreamcatcher" effect...

Off to the linen cabinet to see what I had and piled on lots of pastel and white...mostly all from Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic and a few other favorites...

I've got my Spring palette now...in whites with lavender, pale teal and dusty pink. My Shabbyfufu tones...

Mini British florals, petticoat ruffles and tufting. What could be better?!

Unstructured and pillow strewn, this will make for a great afternoon nap...

Shopping My Home...Living Room Spring Fling

I promised to share some images with you of our living room with a Spring Fling of color...so here we go and the photos will do the talking to you instead of me.

Basically I just shopped my own home and moved things around from other areas, which is the beauty of white painted walls and neutral furnishings....

The old chippy wood teal benches are usually outside by the pool and came from an old closed textile mill in No. Carolina some years back....

As a long time collector of pretty things I have a stash of vintage prom dresses in various colors and use them for staging for photo shoots and props...

Vintage McCoy that I have a large stash of too in my favorite aquas...

Aqua, teal, Jadite, turquoise, seafoam...they are all mixed here...

Petticoat pieces, a vintage candelabra sprayed in a bold lime and old millinery...all adding feminine shabbyfufu flair...

And before I pack up my gear for a long weekend that includes an out of town photo shoot for publication... I'm leaving you with this image shot for a client's website.

My Dining Room....Aqua or Turquoise Accents For Spring

I hope that you enjoyed your weekend! The weather in Miami has been glorious and we have been enjoying some of probably the last days of open windows and fresh air for a long time to come.

Continuing to share some decor in the dining room today, with my love of accenting a neutral decor with variations on just one color. In my case it's always a pastel shade and for Spring what could be better than aqua, or turquoise, or powder blue......

I'll share living room shots hopefully later this week.....

Prettiest Pastels

Fabulous Girl's Weekend In New York City

This past weekend (Thurs~Sunday) I spent a wonderful weekend in New York City with a dear friend Tania from the French blog Grange de Charme.

It was cold for this girl (me) who has lived in Miami for a very long time...but we had loads of fun, did lots of shopping, took many taxis, drank coffee, laughed a lot, ate some good (and not so good) food and saw many tourist sites.

Tania brought her camera and I really needed a photography break so did not....so all of the photos below were shot with my iPhone5. I hope that you enjoy!

SNOW! A big deal to me...since I hardly ever see it...

Shabbyfufu Press, Projects and Magnolia Pearl Giveaway

As usual things have been more than hectic around here....and I feel like I am still playing catch up health wise from the round of antibiotics that I took a couple of weeks back. Not to mention that on Thursday I'm off to NYC for weekend trip and will share some images when I return!

So this is a bit of what's been happening around here........

You have seen my home published a number of times over the years I know....but this is the first time that my beach home has been published, yay! As you can see the writing of this snippet is in French, as it's featured in the brand new edition of Shabby Style magazine, available only in France at this time.

A page in The Best Of Flea Market Style magazine on dress forms shot in my home. This magazine IS available in the U.S. and you will LOVE it and find oodles of useful tips.

The cover of the upcoming Creating Vintage Charm magazine that I shot and contribute to, so I will keep you posted when it becomes available for purchase.

In addition to my photography I've been working on custom orders for chandeliers and other things. I'm loving this new version of the original Mason jar chandeliers that we create in the studio!

Some photos from the archives of my Spring decor, which I hope to delve into again when I return from my NYC trip next week.

I've been attempting to clean out my studio, which my family can tell you I haven't been making much progress on!

Restoration Hardware Inspired Beach House Table And Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint From Robyn Story Designs

Hello...I hope that you are enjoying your weekend!

Oue family lives in beautiful, warm and crazy Miami, and thankfully we are fortunate to have a home on the beach a few hrs north of here to escape to on weekends whenever possible. We have had this home for almost eleven years now and it's a slow work in progress since we don't get up there as much as we would like to. Another problem in getting that place furnished is that when we are there it's to relax and we don't feel like working, which we do more than enough of all week long!

I finally convinced my husband that we needed to get rid of the big beast television in our open plan living room that was hardly ever watched. Who needs TV when you have the ocean to look at instead! The television was on one of those old wall units that were popular before flat screen tv's were around and we donated it all to some needy folks in the area. We are long time DIY'ers, so we set out to work on a table for that wall just to use for display of some pieces that we've collected over the years.

I'll show just a bit of our inspiration, the table in construction and the finishing process using Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint. I got my paint from the fabulous Robyn Story Designs and she ships both the MMS Milk Paint and the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint as well......

Our inspiration was this beautiful table from Restoration Hardware. We have a Restoration Hardware near the beach house, and fell in love (love, love!) with it there....but for our needs couldn't not justify the price and we wanted a painted finish......

My husband is a whiz with power tools, an absolute genius with them in fact!

The lumber cost about $75 and the table took him approximately 3 hrs to build. He is super fast & works without plans...amazing & another reason that the guy's a keeper!

It was made to easily be taken apart, since we had to transport it in the pick up to the beach house and drag it in.

There are several ways to mix milk paint. I've actually worked with milk paint for many years by another company so am familiar with it and the nature of how it applies. The paint comes in a powder form and you mix with water. I decided to do a French Enamel blue wash first and then topcoat with Ironstone. I used a Mason jar to mix with the shake method (shake, shake, shake!) but the best way is really with a spare blender jar just for paint...which unfortunately I did not have.

The paint is lumpy...but you can smooth these lumps out easily as you brush along. If you do use a blender that won't be as much of an issue.

Blue wash is complete and brought out the natural knots in the Southern Yellow Pine.

I did test out the colors on a spare board first and recommend doing so to save grief! Here you can see the layers.

Playing around with sanding and waxing, which is a necessary step to seal the paint and provide protection.

The Miss Mustard Seed Wax gives a lovely sheen and has no odor. I do love the fact that Milk Paint is environmentally friendly!

After sanding and waxing you can see the grain of the blue wash under the white.

The finished table above and below....although hard to see the finish in the garage and these are iPhone shots

The table is now finished and in place at our beach home. It has sort of a pale aqua~esque look to it with bits of the French enamel peeking through. Again...iPhone shots, but you get the picture:-).

Not styled....as this was all of the "stuff" that was stored in the cabinet and most of it will be put away when we find a proper small vintage cabinet to go beside it. We will be going for the "less is more" look here.

Shabby Style Magazine...Fabulous Giveaway Times Two!

Snippets From Photo Shoots And Giveaway Winners

Hello everyone...and thank you to those who entered the GIVEAWAY for the Shabbyfufu Ruffled Throws! I'm going to announce the TWO winners names below, but first posting some of what I've been up to lately, besides working in my Shabbyfufu Studio on client orders.

Photo shoots at some lovely homes with beautiful things, like the tiny snippet shown above from a shoot earlier this week. I just love that darling kitty eating the rose...how cute is she?

And this sprawling horse ranch was a treat to photograph, filled with beauty. Sharing a snippet here too!

Can't really say more at this point, but will as soon as I am able to....and have a couple of more fabulous homes that I'll have the pleasure of visiting to shoot soon. We are still scouting homes in FLORIDA at this time, so feel free to contact me privately (shabbyfufu@yahoo.com) if interested.

A Shabbyfufu Romantic Valentine's Day And GIVEAWAY

In asking the question on the Shabbyfufu Facebook page of "do you think that it's too early to post about Valentine's Day"...I received many vehement comments of NO, so I'm sharing some shots here and I hope you enjoy and become inspired....

I do love the colors of pink and red, but as I often mention here....having a white base to start with makes it fun and easy to add in any color as an accent...depending upon the season and your preference....

Let me tell you a bit about what I did in creating a romantic setting...

On the mantel I lined up antique chocolate pots with fresh fuchsia and cream roses. A vintage parasol, rich pink velvet pillow, old prom dress and on the floor...a "rug" made from a pink rose quilt...

For more rose display I painted some glass jelly jars with the Mod Podge and food coloring method. You can find lots of tutorials for that all over Bloglandia. I also spray painted some tin cans with an ombre effect...in pink (of course)...

An old ironstone pot that you might recognize from my Christmas shots with the same white spray painted branches. Simple lace strips and pink mercury glass hearts are added sparsely...

Antique pin cushion that is tattered and worn and in the shape of a heart is hung from an old window...

Romantic table setting...

A large glass pickle jar painted with the technique mentioned above. I used some vintage Valentine hankies that have scalloped edges to give the effect of flowers...

Vintage millinery displayed in the ombre painted tins...

Under this place setting is a piece of antique sheet music that I scanned, ran through my laminator and cut with decorate edged scissors...

A pair of my younger adult daughter's old pointe shoes with some millinery fleurs and tulle...

I often save the old rosebuds rather than toss them, and glittered several to add a bit of sparkle to the setting...

An antique alabaster lamp that is temporarily dressed with old tulle and vintage millinery...

I admit that it's a bit over the top with frill...and COMPLETELY ADMIT that my home doesn't always look like this, but it's styled to give inspiration, and for a photo shoot for several things....including this:

New Year....New Directions And Dreams

Hello everyone and Happy New Year! I wish you the best that life has to offer in 2013 and may all of your dreams come true!

I haven't had a chance to blog (or work on the SHABBYFUFU Website) since before Christmas with lots going on....including the cruise that our family took to the Eastern Caribbean. Here are a few quick shots that I grabbed off my Instagram page (come follow me...shabbyfufu on Instagram)....and then on to some other bits of news.....

So now here we are....back to reality and it's 2013!

One of the first things that I'm sharing is that several months ago I was contacted by a representative to Ikea (YES...THAT IKEA!) concerning the possibility of carrying my fine art photography in their stores. Oh yes...this would have been fabulous, but alas the project has fallen through at this time.

Onward and upward to other things....it's all good, no worries....

I'm working on a couple of upcoming blog posts that I think you will love....as well as a magazine contribution, so stay tuned soon for those.....

And lastly (certainly NOT leastly!)....speaking of magazines, I was approached awhile ago by one of the editors at Lotus publications to submit some work and am thrilled to have a 38 page spread that I styled and shot in their magazine called SHABBY STYLE.

It's a French magazine and as an added plus, my sweet friend Tania of Grange de Charme has a spread on her gorgeous home that I have had the chance to visit in France.

I don't have my copies yet...it's just out, but I'm going to host a lovely GIVEAWAY PARTY here on the blog for them when I have the copies soon!
