Cotton castle 'Pamukkale'

An unusual natural and historical site with the sparkling white castle -like cascades, Pamukkale is one of the most important highlights of Turkey, unique in the world. Pamukkale is a spectacular place, located in Denizli, in southwestern Turkey. In Turkish it means “cotton castle”. The place is classified by UNESCO.

The famous terraces are made of travertine: carbonate minerals that have been left by the flowing water. The beautiful natural structure is 2,700 metres (8,860 ft) long, 600 m (1,970 ft) wide and 160 m (525 ft) high.

Pamukkale has been used as a natural bathing spot for centuries. The water in these natural pools comes from the hot springs. So water for baths is always warm and filled with minerals. This is one of the most visited places in Turkey.

The marvelous landscape of Pamukkale has been created by this gradual formation, leaving a cotton-like image. Located above the theatre of Hierapolis, the mineral water sources from the thermal springs of Cal Mountain. It is collected in a pool, known as the "Sacred Pool" of ancient times, where you can swim amidst the historical remains of Hierapolis. The Sacred Pool is now located inside a hotel.

The water of Pamukkale is famous for its benefits to the eyes and skin; and its curing properties to the ills of asthma, rheumatism, as well.

The remains of the ancient Hierapolis are situated on back of the thrilling white terraces, standing wondrously in the area. Starting from October hot air balloon trips will give amazing views of this beautiful landscape.

Fotoğraf Albümü Yapın - Fotoğraflarınızın en güzellerini seçin ve bir websitesinin yardımıyla albüm oluşturun. Gittiğiniz bir şehir ile ilgili bir albüm ya da çıktığınız mavi yolculukla ilgili bir fotoğraf kitabı oluşturun.

Yedekleme Yapın!- Değişik makinalarla yaptığınız çekimleri eğer yedekleme amacıyla taşınabilir hardrive üzerine kopyalıyorsanız unutmayın ki tek bir yerde saklanan tüm bilgiler koşullar nedeniyle aynı anda kaybedilebilir. (Hırsızlık, yangın, bozulmalar gibi..)

ya da DVD'lere kaydederek saklayın - Bir başka yöntem de DVD yazıcısı varsa, yazılabilir bir DVD' ye çektiğiniz fotoğrafları, videoları, önemli dosyalarınızı ve müzik arşivinizi yükleyebilirsiniz. Ancak çizilmeye karşı hassas oldukları için bunları mutlaka kutuda saklamak gerekiyor. Kaliteli DVD tercih edilmesi de önemli.

Dijital dünyada paylaşmak ne kadar güzelse istediğimiz zaman anılarımıza erişmek de o kadar önemli.

İstanbul'da Saat Kuleleri

İstanbul' da senelerce yaşayıp hergün önünden geçtiğimiz tarihi binalar var , bazen başımızı kaldırıp bakıyoruz ve düşünüyoruz, ne kadar eski, ne zamandan kalma diye... Bu yapıtlar arasında saat kulelerimiz de var. İstanbul gibi bir çok özelliği ile tanınan renkli bir şehirde saat kuleleri de oldukça görkemli yapılmış. Saat kuleleri şehirlerin simgesi de olabiliyor, İzmir gibi.

İlk kim yaptırmış bilinmiyor ama saat kulesinin ilk bilineni Strazbourg Katedrali'nde. Bizde ise Osmanlı döneminde özellikle II. Abdülhamit döneminde yaygınlaşıyor. 144 tane saat kulesi yapılıyor, 72'si sınırlarımız dışında kalırken 20 tanesi yıkılıyor, geri kalanına Anadolu'da bir çok yerinde rastlamak mümkün. İstanbul' da bugüne gelen Osmanlı saat kulelerinden başlıca 4 tanesine bakmak istedim.

İlki Tophane'deki Nusretiye Saat Kulesi. Nusretiye Camisi'nin bahçesindeki bu kule, şimdilerde İstanbul Modern'in bahçesinden denize doğru bakıyor. Abdülmecit tarafından 1848 - 1849 yıllarında yaptırılan neoklasik tarzlı kule üç katlı ve 15 metre yüksekliğinde. İlk kattaki sütunlar göze çarpıyor, ikinci katta da sütun süslemeleri devam ediyor. Kulenin ön cephesinde, Abdülmecit' in tuğrası ve hicri 1264 yılı seçilebiliyor.

En bilinen ve en çok fotoğrafı çekilen saat kulesi ise Dolmabahçe Saat Kulesi. Bu saat kulesi, Nusretiye'nin tersine, Dolmabahçe Sarayının da hemen yanı başında olmasının verdiği avantajla, İstanbul'un en bilinen saat kulesi, İstanbul'un simgelerinden biri. II. Abdülhamit zamanında, 1890 - 1995 arasında yaptırılmış. Deniz ve kara taraflarında, padişahın pek seçilemeyen tuğraları var. Kulenin bir özelliği de yalnızca saati vermekle kalmayıp, hava durumunu da bildirebilmesi. Karaya bakan yüzünde görülen bu basınç ölçer sayesinde, havanın nasıl olduğunu öğrenmek mümkün. "Eyi" havaya dikkat. Kulenin sağ ve sol, iki yüzünde de sıcaklık ölçerler mevcut.

Yıldız Sarayı'nın, Barbaros Bulvarı'na uzanan köşesinde bulunan Hamidiye Camisi'nin bahçesinde yer alan Yıldız Saat Kulesi de II. Abdülhamit zamanında 1889 -1890 yıllarında yaptırılmış. Herbir yüzünde kitabesi bulunan kulenin saati ne yazık ki çalışmıyor.Yine yola bakan yüzünde bulunan bu sıcaklık ölçer de hava durumunu haber veriyor. Kulenin tepesinde bir de rüzgar gülü mevcut. Osmanlıca yazılmış dört yön, Şark, Garb, Şimal ve Cenub üzerindeki Osmanlı yıldızı rüzgarın yönünü gösteriyor.

Etfal Saat Kulesi, Şişli Etfal Hastanesi'nin bahçesindeki bu saat kulesi, olasılıkla en az bilinen, hatta yanıbaşından geçilirken pek farkedilmeyen bir yerleşimde. II. Abdülhamit'in sekiz aylıkken ölen kızının ardından 1899'da yaptırdığı Şişli Etfal Hastanesi'nin bahçesinde yer alan bu saat kulesi, sonradan gene II. Abdülhamit'in emri ile 1907 yılında, yanı başındaki mescit ile birlikte inşa edilmiş.Bu arada, etfal, Arapça tıfıl sözcüğünün çoğulu, tıfıl ise çocuk demek. 20 metre yüksekliğindeki kulenin, ön ve arka yüzlerinde saat bulunuyor, ancak ne yazık ki çalışmıyorlar. Kulenin gene ön yüzünde kitabesi bulunuyor. Arkasında ise hala faaliyette bulunan mescit yer alıyor.

Zamanı göstermek amaçlı yapılan saat kuleleri ne yazık ki zamana yeniliyor, özellikle sattlerinin tamir ve yenilenmesi de büyük çaba istiyor.

The Accidental Spy (2001)
This Hong Kong martial arts film stars Jackie Chan and was directed by Teddy Chan. It tells the story of Bei, a salesman at a workout equipment store who harbors dreams of adventure. He follows his instincts to trail two suspicious-looking men into an alley. When he realizes that the men are robbing a jewelry store, he jumps into action to foil their plans. Later, he sets on his quest to fulfill his dreams of adventure and fortune, traveling to Korea and Istanbul. Many Turkish artists, models and stuntmen acted in the Turkish scenes of the film.
Girl on the Bridge (1999) It’s night on a Paris bridge. A girl leans over Seine River with tears in her eyes and a violent yearning to drown her sorrows… Directed by Patrice Leconte starring Vanessa Paradis, Daniel Auteuil, Frédéric Pfluger. The film ends on a bridge in Istanbul.
The World Is Not Enough (1998)

The 19th film of the James Bond series, directed by Michael Apted and starring Pierce Brosnan as Bond, revolves around the assassination of billionaire Sir Robert King by the terrorist Renard. Bond is assigned to protect King’s daughter, Elektra, who was previously held for ransom by Renard. While on assignment, Bond foils a scheme to increase petroleum prices by triggering a nuclear meltdown in the waters of Istanbul. Mainly around the Bosphorus and The Maiden Tower.
Topkapı (1964)
Directed by Jules Dussin and starring Melina Mercouri, Peter Ustinov and Maximilian Schell, the film’s plot centers on a group of thieves who devise a plan to steal the emerald-encrusted dagger of Sultan Mahmud I from the Topkapı Palace. Filmed almost entirely in Istanbul, the city plays a major role in the film.
From Russia with Love (1963)
The second film in the James Bond series, and one of the most popular, was made during a time when the effects of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union were felt the most. In the film, which stars Sean Connery as 007, Bond is sent to assist in the defection of Soviet consulate clerk Tatiana Romanova in Turkey. The settings of the film included Istanbul’s Beyazıt, Sulukule and Basilica Cistern.
Istanbul (1957)
Directed by Hoseph Pevney, the film stars Errol Flynn, Cornell Borchers and Nat King Cole and tells the story of a suspected diamond smuggler who returns to Istanbul and finds that the lady love he thought was dead is actually alive.

7. Taken 2 (1999)

Starring Liam Neeson was 80% shot in Istanbul, Turkey. This city that Liam Neesons character Bryan tore apart has been known as a classic spy location. In this action sequel from director Olivier Megaton and producer/co-writer Luc-Besson, the action follows the life of Bryan Mills, a contract protection specialist and former government spook.

8. Skyfall (2012)

The 23rd instalment of the James Bond characterized films. Directed by Sam Mendes.

The story plot opens with James Bond (Daniel Craig in his 3rd performance as agent 007), along with Eve Moneypenny. investigating an attack on MI6 in Istanbul.

9. The International (2009)

The International is an American action thriller film directed by Tom Tykwer. The film used several locations in Istanbul and Turkey during production. In one of the scenes,the main character Clive Owen seen on top the famous Grand Bazaar.

St. Savior in Chora (Kariye Museum), originally a Byzantine monastery with fantastic mosaics and frescoes portraying scenes from the bible, the life and miracles of Jesus.

Byzantine City Walls surrounded the acropolis of Byzantium with 22 kms. long fortification with 96 towers and 9 main gates dating back to the 5th century.

Sultan Tombs, there are five tombs of Ottoman Sultans within the graveyard at Hagia Sophia. From the blue sea to feeling the blues

End of a summer holiday I was on my way to work this morning, Istanbul was a bit less crowded as it is still school holidays. So it is a bliss until mid September. I got on the ferry to Beşiktas and getting my tea, there is a woman behind me insisting on having a tea whilst I am still waiting to be served up my order. So back to the City and people can be a bit restless but I had my tea in a glass which is the traditional way of Turkish tea so I am very calm and happy.

Two ladies sat right across me and started talking. One of them was so unhappy because she just had 3 weeks of holidays in the South Turkey and then Nepal! but now she had to go back to work! She said she could resign today, moreover, her office had no windows or air-con. ...

I think to get rid of these kind of blues the best thing is to focus on the positive side of the work: You could most probably went on a long holiday because they let you, having holidays 3 weeks in a row is very unusual. Then you work and you got paid that is why you could probably were able to go on a holiday, and you have all this energy to plan your next vacation...

As this is my first day back at the office, I got rid all the negativeness around and already thinking about the very next chapter!

İstanbul' un Tarihi Hamamları -2

Galatasaray hamamı:

Galatasaray Hamamı, Sultan II. Beyazıt döneminde, 1481 yılında, şimdiki Galatasaray Lisesi olan okulun öğrencilerinin kullanımı için inşa edilmiştir.

Galatasaray Hamamının yapımı gizemli bir hikayeye dayanır. Sultan Beyazıt o zamanlar şu anki Galatasaray Lisesi ve Galatasaray Hamamının yer aldığı arsada gezinirken bir kulübe gözüne çarpar. Bu kulübe zamanın sayılan zatlarından olan Gül Baba'ya aittir, Sultan Beyazıt bu zat ile tanışıp Gül Baba bir dileğiniz var mıdır diye buyurur ve Gül Baba'da cevaben bu arsaya yüzyıllara hükmedecek içinde büyük bir mektep ve büyük kubbeli hamam bulanacak bir külliye yapılmasını ister. Sultan Beyazıt bu dileği aynen kabul ederek 1481 yılında külliyeyi inşa ettirir. Gül Babanın yatırı halen külliye içindedir ve Galatasaray Hamamı Gül Baba’nın aynen istediği gibi yüzyıllara hükmetmektedir.

Yüzyıllara hitap eden Galatasaray Hamamı birçok paşaya, kadıya, sadrazama padişaha hizmet etmiştir. Galatasaray Hamamı geçmişin mirasını başının üstünde taşımaya devam ederken gelişen hayat standartlarının emrettiği modernlikten de taviz vermeme ilkesini hem mimari yapısında hem hizmet kalitesinde hem de çalışanlarının güler yüzünde hissettirmektedir. Kadın ve erkek bölümleri ayrı olup, etkinliklere de ev sahipliği yapmaktadır.

Cağaloğlu Hamamı:

Osmanlı İmparatorluğu döneminde Tarihi Yarımada’da inşa edilen ve Osmanlı mimari özelliklerini taşıyan bilinen son hamamdır. I. Mahmut tarafından inşa ettirilen hamamda, kadınlar ve erkekler için ayrı bölümler bulunmaktadır ve hamam hala hizmet vermektedir.

Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı:

Tophane’deki leventlere hizmet vermesi amacıyla “ denizlerin fatihi” Kılıç Ali tarafından Mimar Sinan’a yaptırılmış. Osmanlı donanmasının en güçlü olduğu dönemi temsil eden Kılıç Ali Paşa, ünü tüm dünyaya yayılmış bir kahraman. Henüz çocukken esir düştüğü Osmanlı donanmasında Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa tarafından yetiştirildi; yetenekleri ve becerisiyle sivrildi. Uluç Ali iken Akdeniz’de Osmanlı bayrağını dalgalandıran Kaptan-ı Derya Kılıç Ali Paşa oldu. Rivayete göre ünlü İspanyol yazar Cervantes’in de ilham kaynağıydı.

Işığı geçiren geniş ve görkemli kubbesiyle Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı’nın Mimar Sinan mührünü taşıdığı görür görmez anlaşılıyor. Büyük ustanın son eserlerinden olan Hamam 1578-1583 tarihleri arasında inşa edilmiş. Burası, İstanbul’un liman semti; ticaret, çağdaş sanat, yeme içme ve cazibe merkezi Tophane’nin sembol yapılarından biri. Dış cepheden rahatça görülebilen açıklıkta harikulade bir silüete ve İstanbul’un ikinci en büyük hamam kubbesine sahip. Geniş ışık huzmelerini ileten 14 metre genişliğinde ve 17 metre yükseklikteki kubbenin altında bulunan resepsiyon ve dinlenme bölümüne girince insan yapının güzelliğine bir kez de içeride tanık oluyor.

İstanbul'un tarihi hamamları -1

Hürrem Sultan Hamamı:

İstanbul'da Ayasofya Müzesi ile Sultanahmet Camii arasında yer alan hamam Kanuni Sultan Süleyman'ın eşi Hürrem Sultan tarafından, Mimar Sinan' a 1556 yılında.

Aya Sofya'nın yanına, daha önce tarihi Zeuksippos Banyoları'nın bulunduğu yere inşa edilmiştir.

Mihrimah Sultan Hamamı:

Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’ın Hürrem Sultan’dan olan kızı Mihrimah Sultan adına Üsküdar ve Edirnekapı’da iki büyük cami ve külliyeyi Mimar Sinan’a yaptırdığı belirtiliyor. Bu tarihi eserleri ilginç kılan özellik olarak, Edirnekapı’daki Mihrimah Sultan Camisi’nin tek minaresinin arkasından güneş doğarken, Üsküdar’daki caminin iki minaresinin arasında ay doğması gösteriliyor. Mihrimah Sultan’ın ismi Farsça’da ‘Mihr ü mah’ güneş ve ay anlamına geliyor.

Edirnekapı’da bulunan ve Mihrimah Sultan Cami Külliyesi’nin bir bölümü olan tarihi Mihrmah Sultan Hamamı, Tarihi kaynaklara göre, 1562-1565 yıllarında çifte hamam biçiminde, klasik dönemde yaygın olan bir plan şemasında Mimar Sinan tarafından inşa edilmişir. Mihrimah Sultan Hamamı, Türk Hamamı kültüründe önemli rol oynamaktadır.

Balat Hamamı:

İstanbul’un en eski hamamı olan Balat Hamamı, Molla Aşki Mahallesi’nde hangi dönem yapıldığı bilinmese de II. Bayezid veya Fatih Sultan Mehmet döneminde inşa edildiği tahmin ediliyor. Çifte hamam olarak yapılmış. Balat Hamamı herhangi bir süslemeye sahip bulunmamakta ise de İstanbul'un bugün ayakta kalabilmiş en eski hamamlarından biri olarak değerli bir eserdir. Ayrıca başka hamamlarda görülmeyen mimari özellikleri bakımından da dikkate değer bir yapıdır.

Süleymaniye Hamamı:

Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’ ın vakfiyesine ait olan hamam 1557’de hizmete girdi. Süleymaniye Külliyesi’nin bir parçası. Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’a ait bir locası da var. Kubbeleri ve birbiri ardı sıra geometrik olarak dizilmiş orijinal bacalarıyla İstanbul’un en güzel süslerinden. 1924’te kapatıldı, 2001’de kiralandı, restorasyon sonunda 2004’te yeniden açıldı. 16 kurnası olan hamamın kapasitesi 32 kişi.

Turkish baths were introduced to Britain by David Urquhart, diplomat and sometime Member of Parliament for Stafford, who for political and personal reasons wished to popularize Turkish culture. In 1850 he wrote The Pillars of Hercules, a book about his travels in 1848 through Spain and Morocco. He described the system of dry hot-air baths used there and in the Ottoman Empire which had changed little since Roman times. In 1856 Richard Barter read Urquhart's book and worked with him to construct a bath. They opened the first modern Turkish bath at St Ann's Hydropathic Establishment near Blarney, County Cork, Ireland. The following year, the first public bath of its type to be built in mainland Britain since Roman times was opened in Manchester, and the idea spread rapidly. It reached London in July 1860, when Roger Evans, a member of one of Urquhart's Foreign Affairs Committees, opened a Turkish bath at 5 Bell Street, near Marble Arch.

Pasha - London

During the following 150 years, over 600 Turkish baths opened in Britain, including those built by municipal authorities as part of swimming pool complexes, taking advantage of the fact that water-heating boilers were already on site.

As of September 2013 there were just twelve Victorian-style Turkish baths remaining open in Britain but hot-air baths still thrive in the form of the Russian steam baths banya (sauna) and the Finnish sauna.

Similar baths opened in other parts of the British Empire. Dr. John Le Gay Brereton, who had given medical advice to bathers in a Foreign Affairs Committee-owned Turkish bath in Bradford, travelled to Sydney, Australia, and opened a Turkish bath there on Spring Street in 1859, even before such baths had reached London. Canada had one by 1869, and the first in New Zealand was opened in 1874.

Urquhart's influence was also felt outside the Empire when in 1861, Dr Charles H Shepard opened the first Turkish baths in the United States at 63 Columbia Street, Brooklyn Heights, New York, most probably on 3 October 1863Before this, the United States, like many other places, had several Russian vapor baths, one of the first being that opened in 1861 by M.Hlasko at Philadelphia.

Afif Ahmed Pasha Mansion- Afif Ahmed Paşa Yalısı

This mansion, built in the late 19th Century with Neo-Baroque style by Alexandre Vallaury, architect of the famous buildings of Ottoman Bank and Pera Palas Hotel, was later bought by Misbah Muhayyes, the previous owner of Pera Palas. It is a mixture of East and West.

When Agatha Christie visited Istanbul to write her novel ‘Murder on the Orient Express’, she was a guest in this mansion. In 1926 while she was staying at this Yalı as a guest, her car found left wrecked and she disappeared for 11 days. She resurfaced in Yorkshire and it is unclear what happened to her during those 11 days.

The mansion has a very pretty front on the seaside and it looks like a birthday cake. With 5 floors, 21 bedrooms and 4 towers it has a very glamours look.

FAIK BEY MANSION

Faik bey Mansion- Faik Bey Yalısı

Passing by boat in Beylerbeyi, you will immediately recognize this waterside mansion with its two green Towers. This was built by Faik Bey who was the Sultan's speechwriter at Yıldız Palace in the period of Emperor Abdul Hamid II.

During Faik Bey’s residence this elegant mansion held many literature and music forums. More recently, taken in 1964, starring Peter Ustinov and Melina Mercouri's famous 'Topkapi' film used this mansion too. Today, it still contains the Ottoman architectural details, with its elegance and dignified expression, holds permanent place in people's minds.

Wooden Mansions (Yalı) of Bosphorus

The Bosphorus Yalıs are elegant wooden mansions that sit beside the water, as in Turkish, the word Yalı refers to a waterside house, those mansions are called ‘yalı’s.

The first yalıs were built in the early 18th century, during the Tulip Era of Ottoman Empire. As part of Istanbul, yalıs are not only famous with their lovely wooden architecture, they all have a different history and hold interesting past.

As many yalıs are located at Vaniköy, Kandilli, Kanlıca and Arnavutköy; Yeniköy retains the largest number of yalıs alongside the Bosphorus.

Most are hidden from casual sighters behind walls, the best way to see them is from a boat on the Bosphorus. When visiting Istanbul, take a boat tour on the Bosphorus and you will spot many of them.

Frozen... Istanbul

Despite the strong currents and the relatively mild climate of Istanbul, the sea in the Bosphorus has frozen several times throughout history, even during the 20th century. The last time the sea in the Bosphorus froze was in 1954 when people were able to cross from one side of the strait to the other walking on the huge pieces of ice.

· in 401, at the time of the Byzantine Emperor Arcadius freeze lasted 20 days.

• in 739 in frozen again.

• In the year 755 all the Black Sea coast, Golden Horn and in the northern part of the Marmara frozen all together.

• in 763 in Golden Horn coasts 100 paces distance, froze to a depth of 30 meters.

• in 928 ice-melting took four months.

• in 1823, during the period of Mahmud II, both the sea and the flowing water from the faucet

was frozen.

Which of these sea animals could be found in the Bosphorus in the past but not today?

Swordfish! would use the strait to travel from the Aegean to the Marmara and then the Black Sea. This migration used to be from May until September, when they returned to the warmer seas. After people started to hunt them with harpoons in the 1930s, their populations rapidly decreased. They have been extinct in the area since the 1970s.

A rare type of Mediterranean marine mammal Mediterranean Monk Seal were living all coastal regions of Turkey until the 1960s, especially in the Islands and shores of the Istanbul.

Seals were breeding in the coasts of Tuzla and the Princes Islands, in winter they could be seen in wider areas, some of them resided in the quiet bays of Bosporus, even they would take shelter in the boathouses of vacant mansions.

The seal has been observed, particularly in the Strait is fed with sea bass. In the 1970s, due to the environmental pollution and the sandy beaches that the seals breed on turning into settlements, they had become a part history in İstanbul.

Last sighting of the seals was in 2007 in the sea of Marmara, has created great joy.

Boğaziçi ... biliyor muydunuz?

İstanbul'un yunuslar dışında, deniz yaşamı içinde görülmüş olan bir diğer deniz memelisi Türkiye'de rastlanan türü ile Akdeniz Fokudur.

1960'lara kadar Akdeniz Foku Türkiye'nin bütün kıyı bölgelerinde yaşıyordu. İstanbul'da fok özellikle Adalar ve Tuzla kıyılarında ürer, kışın daha geniş bir alanda görülür, bazıları Boğaz'ın sakin koylarında barınır, hatta kışın boşalan yalıların kayıkhanelerinde yatarlardı.

Fokun Boğaz'da özellikle levrekle beslendiği gözlenmiştir. 1970'lere gelindiğinde çevre kirliliği ve yavruladıkları kumsalların yerleşim birimlerine dönüşmesi sebebiyle İstanbul'da foklar tarihe karışmıştır.

Marmara Denizi'nde en son 2007’ de görülen fok balığı büyük sevinç yaratmıştır.

The birds and the sealife at the Bosphorus

As soon a ferry sets sail there will be a stream of black-headed seagulls tailing it. The ferry passengers are ready to throw small pieces of simit to the seagulls and they are the experts to catch the tasty food covered with sesames.

The Bosphorus also lies on a migratory route and the one of the great sights of the city is that of the storks arriving back from their winter residence in Africa in March and then leaving again in even bigger numbers the third week of August. For lovers of birds and nature, Istanbul is an ideal place to partake in a spot of bird watching.

On rare occasions, especially early mornings, you might see small groups of dolphins swimming across the Bosphorus, in addition to migratory dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins and harbour porpoises have all returned to the water. These joyful creatures are a delight to watch for ferry passengers and fishermen.

Black Sea coastline has traditionally depended on fishing for a part of its livelihood as the plenty fish stocks migrate between the cold Black Sea and the warmer Sea of Marmara. Although there is a decline in the numbers, still, some stocks of smaller fish, such as bluefish, red mullet, mackerel snapper are still part of the sea life.

The Bosphorus- The Beauty of Istanbul

One of the world’s most strategic waterways, Bosphorus is the strait between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara; known in Turkish as Bogazici (the Strait), that separates the European and Asia about 32 km long.

Bosphorus name comes from a Tracian word of unknown origin, interpreted in Greek meaning "Ford of the Cow": from the legend of Io, one of the many lovers of Zeus, who swam across the sea here as a cow chased and continuously disturbed by flies sent by Hera.

Although now there are two modern bridges accross the Bosphorus and the third is on the built, the first ever bridging at the Bosphorus was in 512 BC, ordered by the Persian King Darius, with 325 boats from one coast to the other.

Historically, the Bosphorus has had a great importance to the Empires and often caused conflict. Today the Bosphorus is the World’s busiest shipping routes which is controlled by Turkey.

Today every visitor to Istanbul wants to—and should!—take a Bosphorus cruise on the 32 km (20-mile)-long strait which joins the Sea of Marmara to the south with the Black Sea to the north of Istanbul.

Today is a beautiful day with clear skies and the sun shining at Istanbul... Very vibrant and cosmopolitan, you just don't know what will be just around the corner.

The Island ferry left two minutes late and my ferry to Besiktas waited in line, there was another boat waiting for the opening too. So a little bit of sea traffic (!) happened this morning. Seagulls, as the usual owner by the coast, were piking through simit pieces thrown from the ferry.

The way you go to work, sipping your Turkish-tea on the blue Bosphorus, is so calming and beautiful you truly enjoy every second of the ferry journey.

Yes, you would wish you were in Istanbul in the morning!
