Bronze And Silver

After almost a month of fervour, frenzy and fan moments, the Olympics are finally over. These games have seen many bittersweet experiences many highs and lows and certain not so admirable instances.

However, a recent article which I was reading has set me thinking. It was about how usually a bronze medalist is happier than a silver medalist, owing to the fact that they atleast secured a winning place. On the other hand the one winning the silver regrets over the fact that they could not win the gold medal.

This is a common psychological phenomenon where humans tend to undermine their present concrete achievements or privileges and think about better possible outcomes. Simply put, they do not acknowledge what they have and crib about what could have been. Just like the bronze winner being happy even after getting the third position while silver winner is upset over not achieving the first position.

This behaviour possibly stems from the fact that the bronze medalist accepts that getting a third position is better than not getting any position at all, and had they been one spot down, there wouldn't be any medal at all. For them bronze medal is far better than no medal because it is atleast a winning spot. On the other hand the silver winner regards it as a loss or a missed win. They think that if they could win silver they could win a gold as well. So for them, it is more of a lost spot, the position which they get because they couldn't win.

Ironically, the lesser winning person is happier than the better winning one. But that's how human mind works.

However, at the end of the day it is what it is. You've won what you've won and you've lost if you've lost. The best thing to do is to keep going so that maybe next time you could get that gold. But don't be disheartened and don't refrain from celebrating that silver which was won with your blood and sweat. Its always good to be better than the best, but life isn't meaningless if you couldn't do that.

The Ultimate Quest

Have you ever wondered what everyone is looking for in this frenzied world? Have you ever given a moment of thought to what all the hullabaloo is about? Have you ever asked yourself what your ultimate quest is?

When I gave it a thought, the realization struck. All that we want, money, attention, power, freedom, love, glamour, everything, absolutely everything, is for that sense of fulfillment. Whatever you desire, when you attain, will give you an undefinable sense of satisfaction. And in my opinion, its definition is the peace of mind.

We all actually crave for that sense of content, that peace of mind ultimately. Its ironical how we put ourselves into all the commotion to achieve the peace and content. How we are running the life's race, just to reach the undefined destination.

Anyhow, we do define it for ourselves time and again, as and when required and as it seems to suit us. Some call it that dream job, while others defines it as the money, for someone it could be standing out in the crowd, while for another it could be seeing their family happy. Some find this contentment in the lap of nature while other finds it amidst people, some achieve it through power, by being at the top of their game. For the more enlightened ones it is called making a difference or giving back to the society.

The thing is, whatever name you know it by, its all the same. Its actually upto each one of us to recognize it, find it, achieve it and attain it. It is upto each one of us to address and answer that 'Ultimate Quest' which makes us, 'Us'.

Its Their Problem

Oftentimes we are faced with criticism from people around us. Sometimes this criticism can lead us to betterment and improvement of self.

However, more often than not, this criticism roots from the frustrations of people who are inflicting it upon you. Another reason behind this attitude of picking upon others could be only to prevent boredom, because most people could not keep themselves occupied with constructive endeavours and hence their lack of creativity shows up in the form of unjustified behaviour like poking fun at or commenting upon people's lives.

It is my personal observation that people often knowingly or unknowingly pick upon their own family members like their children and it is mostly done to the more patient one. The one who wouldn't retaliate is often commented upon the most.

Another set of behaviour is not letting people be at peace. If in a family or an organisation, certain members are at peace or content with what they are doing and try to keep growing at their own pace, it is not taken very well by others. This is actually the result of their narrow point of view, due to which people are not able to think broadly enough to see that people can be content and happy with what they do or with their present state, while striving for better at the same time.

Sadly, most people do not have the courage to live their lives completely in the sense that they could never break the vicious cycle of the criterion set by the world, which leads to frustration and sense of unfulfilled life. This multiplies over time and comes out in the form of aforementioned behaviour or attitude.

So, the next time someone makes you feel any less or tries to pull you down to their level, don't let them succeed, rather, know that all this stems from their discontent and you need not fall into that dark pit as them. Help them come out of it if you can, but if they refuse to do so, the least you could do is not get pulled down into it. Know that its their problem and not yours.

Also, it is very important to live a life of your choice unless you are bothering anyone else, because if you don't live a full and content life, you'll end up sad and frustrated yourself and become the propagator of the vicious cycle like those around you.

I'm pretty sure we all have had our share of experiences of this kind, where we were made to doubt our thoughts, decisions or even our physiology which we have little control over. Don't keep it to yourself, share your thoughts and experiences in the comments.

Self Confidence: Facing Your Storms

Self confidence is often considered to be a virtue of those in possession of power, money or fame. It is always presumed that someone lacking the above is prone to lack confidence as well.

Well this might actually not be the case. I have myself seen people at higher positions but with complete lack of confidence or a stand when it comes to making crucial decisions. The thing is, everybody wants power but no one wants to take the liability for the consequences of this power.

However, there are another kind of people too, these are the ones who possess enough self confidence to be able to stand for what they think is right and are capable to bear the aftereffects of their actions or position.

Then there are those who may not possess any of the aforementioned virtues but are still full of confidence to take over the world. Such people sometimes achieve the unachievable solely with their confidence in themselves and their abilities.

So the thing is, confidence is not the quality that comes from power, rather it is an intrinsic characteristic that needs to be developed and worked upon over the course of time.

This is what makes a person stand courageously in the face of adversities and face the storms that come their way.

The thing is, if you trust yourself fully and have faith in your abilities. If you can stand up for what you think is right and stand against what you think is wrong, you have got it. You have what they call 'Confidence'.

So it isn't apt to connect the quality of being confident with professional or monetary success, rather it is dependent upon how much effort we put into ourselves. And trust me if you invest in building self confidence, the returns are going to be great.

The New One

At some point or other in our lives we've all been 'that new person' at a place that is new to us. One could be hesitant or shy or outgoing or friendly. But all that is from the perspective of the 'new one'. There is another perspective involved and that is of the 'old ones' or the established ones.

Actually I've had this experience fairly recently when I left my workplace of 6 years to join somewhere else. Honestly speaking it was little difficult for a person like me, who always seeks familiarity and comfort, the one who isn't always keen to meet new people.

Anyways, as a new person at the new place I felt very welcomed, as is the case mostly. But there always are other things. There are so many types of people you meet and there are so many attitudes and behaviours you come across.

There are the welcoming ones, then there are the friendly ones and the over friendly ones. There are leg pullers and there are helping ones. There are also people who try to influence every new person, and there are others who aren't interested. Then there are the ones who repel people, there are the incessant talkers and the silent goers. There are the egoistic ones and the hesitant ones. There are the backstabbers and the straightforward ones. There will be people you think you could trust, and then there are the ones you could actually trust.

When you are 'the new one', you'll feel lonely at times, and crave familiarity. At times you'll discover amazing work culture. At some other times you'll get to meet some really wonderful people. Whatever and whoever it is that you come across, don't ever let it become what you aren't because ultimately your talent, your qualities and your self is all that makes a mark.

And one more thing, don't ever be someone who makes any 'new one' wish that they could go back to their old place.

Walk Away

Oftentimes in life we come across people, jobs and circumstances which take away the zest and the essence of our being. They devoid us of the liveliness and the enthusiasm to work or live or be where we are.

And it is a common sight nowadays. So what could be done, well we all must struggle where we are, in order to excel at what we do, to achieve what we want in life. However, striving for better does not mean that we lose our self respect and ourselves to the task or the person for that matter.

People often stay quiet and bear all that is thrust upon them to save the relationship, friendship or job. They keep sacrificing their mental peace only to present a perfect picture to the world. But this isn't the way. Nothing in the world is worth sacrificing your peace, mental balance and self respect.

Walking away is the right thing to do in such situations. Just walk away from that toxic place, person or thing. Though it isn't easy to just leave behind and not look back at all the efforts that you put in, all the years that you have invested into that thing or person, but it is never worth the suffering.

Trust me you'll feel much more liberated and refreshed by walking out of the unnecessary humiliation and torture which isn't justified but is still being forced upon you.

So when you have given your best to someone or something but you get only damaged soul and degraded self respect in return, know that its time to walk away.

But before you take the step, weigh your options and choose what's best for you. Do what your heart tells you to do, rest all will be well.

Saving Them

Failure, embarrassment, confrontation, introspection, clarification, troubles, inconvenience, sadness, bad days, work pressure, peer pressure, dominance, injustice, disrespect, insult, humiliation, not being acknowledged, repentance, guilt, anger, senselessness, illness, disease, hurt, downfall, betrayal, there is so much that we all go through every single day.

We see people around us falling prey to all or many of the aforementioned situations. There are times when our friends, family, colleagues or loved ones need help and we do help them to some extent, but there is always a limit to what we can do for them, no matter how badly we want to support them and save them from it all.

Afterall there is not much that you can do. And what exactly is it that you can do?

You can only do so much, you can only take stand, you can only convince them, you can only correct them when they are wrong, you can only try and pull them out of that unwanted situation, you can only give them that emotional support, you can only motivate them when the whole world is doing otherwise, you can only help them with money, time, encouragement, you can only stand beside them, you can only take them to doctor, you can only get them that medicine, you can only comfort them with words, you can only nurse their wounds, you can just show them light when all they see is darkness, you can only enlighten them when they are ignorant, you can only make them laugh when sadness engulfs them, you can only show some respect for their struggles, you can only help build their self-esteem and confidence, you can only drag them out of that age old guilt, you can only kindle or rekindle the love for life and joy, you can only make them smile, you can only give them courage, you can only show faith in them.

So it seems there is not much we can do to help or save people. Everyone must fight their own battles, everyone must undergo their own sufferings, each one of us must carry our own baggage and all of us need to bear the brunt on our own.

There is not much that could be done. But actually, a little bit goes a long way. A small gesture of trust and respect could change a life. I mean, you never know what impact you are making on someone's life, your words may be a balm for someone's broken soul. You never know how your kind words could help people come out of the darkest pits, how your time and talk can change a negative mindset into a positive one.

Anais Nin has famously said, "You cannot save people. You can only love them." So, just do what you ought to do, just care for people, you don't need superpowers to save people, all you need is concern and love and you would be a great help.

On Paper

A few days ago we booked train tickets for our grandparents for an upcoming journey. It was done online and hence we got the tickets too, online. However, they insisted on getting it printed as they were skeptic about the authenticity of digital tickets. Now that has set me thinking.

In the current times of digitisation when anything and everything is being documented online and in digital format, there is still this generation of our grandparents who do not trust these digital documents and would rather prefer it all literally 'On Paper'. The digital system which is undoubtedly convenient and foolproof also, is being doubted upon by our old generations obviously because they are not familiar with the concept and idea of it. We fear or question something when we don't know it.

On giving it a little thought I realised that we are still mostly in an 'On Paper' mode, most important documents are in this old school format only and hence the term 'Paperwork', which is inevitable for any contract, deal, service, transaction, and what not.

So the humble paperwork which is continuously being replaced by the 'Paperless' methods of documentation still holds its importance and place in the hearts of the oldies. Another reason for this distrust could be the instincts that have been developed because of years of following those conventional methods and it is definitely difficult to let go of age old practices. As they say, 'habits are die hard'.

Also, in my humble opinion, be it any generation, old or new, the significance of getting it all 'On Paper' is not diminishing anytime soon. The age old paperwork is equally important in today's digital era, as it was 25 or 30 years ago and is definitely going to be so for years to come.

Those Who Suppress

We all have seen people around us who tend to suppress others. These people can be bosses, partners, friends and even parents. But have you ever wondered why people exhibit such behaviour? Why people have a tendency to crumple down those around or near them?

In my experience and understanding, those who suppress are actually full of complexes and frustrations, which then come out in the form of repression of those under control or those who are bound to listen to them and follow them.

Those who suppress are actually haunted by their own insecurities and instead of working upon themselves, they take the completely illogical and insensitive path of subduing others. Instead of introspecting upon what changes should be made in themselves, they force everyone around them to change their ways and behaviour.

Those who suppress are driven purely by extreme hate and bitterness, they inflict upon others, what they might have experienced themselves. They lack objectivity, fairness isn't their thing. The only means they know is clamping down those around.

Sadly, such annihilators are all around but one need not fear them or bear them. One must take stand for oneself and face such horrible people with courage and confidence because that's what frightens them the most

Full Circle

Have you ever wondered that why things happen the way they happen? Why events take a turn the way they take a turn? Well, life has a way of giving it back to what was put into it. Good or bad, whatever goes around comes around. It is the circle of life.

Life does come full circle and I've experienced it myself. And I'm sure we all have done.

I have always been disappointed and bothered at the same time, with the fact that why certain people around me who were always breaking rules, manipulating people, practicing immorality, but still, were getting away with it. I was always upset with the great injustice going around. However, with time, I've come to realise and accept the fact that people will do what they have to do, and 'Karma' will do what it ought to do.

I have now assimilated the fact that you have to keep doing what you think is right and leave the rest to destiny, God and the 'Great Design', as one may call it. Maybe everything is prewritten, maybe not. Maybe those who humiliate you today, were at some point humiliated by you, or will at some point be humiliated by someone else.

Maybe, someone helping you is the payback for the help you have given to someone, at some point in life.

Whatever it is, life does work in mysterious ways. However, interestingly, the mechanism may be complex, but the basics are simple. Try not to hurt or humiliate anyone intentionally, intend not to pull anyone down. Keep working for what you believe in, but also make sure, it doesn't harm or bother anyone.

So, it is an undeniable fact that you get what you give and what goes around does come around.

Never ever forget that.

Its Not My Fault

I have started getting grey hair, and its pretty early for that. But that's not my concern. The issue is the constant scrutiny and criticism that I am showered upon for the ever budding silver locks. The thing is that it is annoying to be pinched for something that you have no control over.

And I'm sure its not just me. Many of us are always at the recieving end of such useless comments, being constantly reminded of what isn't 'right' as per the set standards. It is logical and well understood if people comment upon or correct the things that one could control. But condemning people for what they have no power upon, that's outrageous. Even though people like me, who have enough confidence to rise over such petty observations won't take it seriously. But what about people who don't have such confidence? You are dragging them further down with your nasty comments, when they actually need support and cooperation.

And the sad part is, people do it all the time. Looking down upon people because they are obese even though there could be umpteen factors behind that, belittling people for grey hair or pimples, questioning them about there stammer, suggesting them remedies for height gain, making them feel lesser about the things they may not be in-charge of.

All this just doesn't make sense. It is outright illogical and insensitive too. We have better issues to criticize than someone's hair fall, greying hair, dark circles or dark spots.

Let's just grow up.

What's New?

Its new year again. We have reached the year 2022. But the question is what is new about this year? Is it just the numbers on the calendar? Well, the answer could be different for each one of us. For many of us it would be the same old routine, while for others it could be new beginnings.

Its actually upto ourselves to decide what's going to be new to this year or is it gonna be the same as the past years. And actually that's not always bad. If you are enjoying what you were doing in the last year, then you must keep doing it. However, if you wish to bring any changes to your life, this is a really good time. For that matter, any time is a good time to bring positive changes. But new year's start is always better because there is an air of freshness all around and it makes one pledge even more strongly to bring about necessary changes.Engage yourself into things that make you happy and content. Do not hold back on anything unless it is harming or hurting or letting anyone down.

So, it is upto you to decide what's going to be new about this year. Go for it. Get that book which you were thinking of getting the last whole year or that gadget which you really need. Take that vacation which you were dreaming of for a while or visit that place you have always wanted to visit. Start your own things, meet your people, read, write, photograph, cook, think, work on it. Renew yourself because its new year. And you get to decide what's going to be new.

Share Market: Calculations And Emotions

The most common perception about Share Market is that it is a game of algorithm, and that it is entirely based on calculations. However, it might not actually be completely true. Infact, the rise and fall of share market is predominantly determined by people's emotions and mentalities.

Though I'm not well versed with technicalities of the stock market, but a little discussion every now and then with my spouse has assured me of the volatility and unpredictability of the market, owing to the unsteady and insecure mindset of common people when it comes to the matters of money.

Usually what happens with retail or small investors is that, a news, positive or negative, spreads about a particular share or brand, which results in collective panic or euphoria depending upon whether it is good or bad. It then leads to bulk trading for that particular share. That is why it isn't wrong to say that share trading is as much a game of emotions as it is a game of calculations. The market rises and falls in proportion to people's hopes and disappointments.

There is another interesting fact that I recently came to know, the day of Deepawali is not a day for trading as share market remains closed on that day. However trading is done for an hour, and is called 'Muhurat Trading', as a shagun on the festival of godess Lakshmi. Now isn't that a perfect example of how share market treads on emotions.

Thus it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that share trading thrives on common people's moods and sentiments to a great extent and responses and reactions of the public decide the numbers and the trends of the market.

Is Artistry Passé?

I recently read a newspaper article about how the youth of India is more inclined towards building business empires rather than persuing art. On giving it a deeper thought one realises that this indeed is the case. People are more interested in earning big and 'making it big', rather than relishing art or contributing to artistic heritage of the country.

So what could be the possible reasons behind this changing attitude, why are we more into entrepreneurship than into art? The answer is simple. In my humble opinion, we are becoming more and more materialistic day by day and that's what we are imparting to the upcoming generations, we are shaping their mindset to follow a certain course, to fit a certain mould. We aren't allowing them to think about significant things, rather we are feeding the set definition of significant into their minds. And this definition tends to make them money minded rather than choose their own priorities and happiness. As a matter of fact, money is the new happiness and the latest definition of success.

This is why the poor art has been shoved into the corner, making way for the shining new trend of 'making it big', rather than 'making a difference'.

However, for old school artistically inclined people like me, art could never be passé and would continue to be as blissful as ever. It would continue to bring immense joy and peace to the artist and the art lovers.

Pin Drop Silence

If you have you ever devoured the silence of the dawn, if you have ever soaked yourself into the calm and peace of the early mornings you'll know its totally worth the hassle of leaving the comfort of bed early. Even though it is quite difficult for me, but whenever I am able to break the shackles of laziness and get up early, the lovely mornings never disappoint me.

And the best part is the silence that the early mornings have to offer. Infact, this silence is the very definition of pin drop silence. It is silence in its truest form, and it couldn't be attained or achieved at any other time of the day, because, the late nights nowadays can never be so silent and the days, impossible.

If you are an early bird, you will surely relate to the fact that early mornings not only bring a sense of calm but also energize you for the battles of the long day that follows. I'm sure we all feel a little more confident and ready to face the world if we get up a little early.

For me, and I'm sure for many of you, the early mornings exemplify the age old phrase which we always heard from our teachers in school. 'Pin drop silence' has found a new meaning for me, both literally and metaphorically.

The Silent Warriors

Last two years have been tough for all of us. We all fought hard, we won and we lost, and during these times our corona warriors went an extra mile to make sure the battle isn't lost.

However, there were some warriors, who fought while they taught. These were the humble teachers who are always underestimated, but still important.

Recently, a video of a teacher speaking from the platform of a popular game show went viral. She spoke her heart out about the negligence shown towards teachers who too, like other professionals worked steadfastly and unstoppably in the face of the pandemic. And she was so right. Only one of us would understand what struggles the teaching fraternity has been through while adapting to the sudden change of scenario, and that too in a nation where networks are ever wavering and unpredictable.

In a country where technology is still an alien concept to many, we were so unprepared for the 'online education' system. But, we had no choice and we adapted, however hard it might have been, but we did it. And we are proud of ourselves for doing that. But no one else is.

As always, the contribution of teachers is remembered only on teacher's day. Paycuts, layoffs, being judged, there is so much the teachers have faced during this time.

And even after braving all this, not being acknowledged, the endless hours of staring the screens being termed as 'free time' or 'long vacations' and being used as an excuse to be lash out at them, all this is proof that the contribution of teachers is not being recognised.

However, these silent warriors will keep fighting, no matter what, because, classrooms do not just mean textbooks, and teachers do not just teach subjects, there are so many life lessons that they impart to their students during the forty minutes of a class. There is so much effort they put in, just to see their students succeed, just to see their little plants blossom and grow up to not just become big, but become good.

Small Towns

There's this thing about small towns. They give you a sense of belonging. Small towns bring a plethora of memories alive.
Small towns are the places where everyone knows everyone, people meet and greet, there is always someone known around you.
Small towns have the vibe of homeliness and comfort, the comfort that could never be found in run of the mill routines of the big cities.
Small towns are always pleasent to live in, they are the representatives of our roots, they remind us of our origin and where we belong.
Being from a small town is quite common, but staying in a small town is a privilege that very few experience nowdays, owing to the cutthroat competition of 'who settles the farthest'.
But, trust me, living in a small town is an experience in itself. The peace and calm here is unmatched. The past two years have seen people returning to their roots, and choosing to stay there, thanks to the love, care, respect and regard our very own small towns offer, welcoming them with open arms and bringing them closer to their loved ones, the ones who really matter.
This makes me all the more glad to be a small towner.

Being A Poet

Being a poet is one of the greatest privileges, I suppose. This is because your imagination takes you to places where you may never have been. You can see places, you haven't seen, you can do things you may not do otherwise, and all of it, through poetry.

Even though you have your share of dilemmas, being a poet is a pleasure.
That ecstatic feeling when you collect your thoughts and pen down a literary piece, is unmatched, and the sense of satisfaction that follows is a reward in itself.
Being poets we never crave money or favours, all we want is appreciation and understanding of our work as every piece we write is close to our heart because it is our own creation and the joy of creating is one of the greatest joys of all time.
Being a poet is getting the best of both worlds, its like sitting in a bubble of your own, observing the world outside, it is like bringing things alive through your words.
It is a great feeling.

You Have Changed...

"You have changed", the phrase is a common comment, compliment, observation, reminder, taunt and what not, and interestingly, more often than not, we deny it, and vehemently deny it, when it is actually mostly true.

I recently realised that, I have actually changed a lot over the course of time. I'm not the same person that I was ten years, or even five years back. And I'm sure, we all relate to it. Our experiences, happenings, whatever we go through... it all changes us, for better or for worse, we do change.

Hardships change you, bittersweet experiences change you, failures, successes, wins and losses they all change you. Each passing day, each passing year changes you.

Every person you meet, the people you live with, the people you stay with, the people you work with, the people you let go, the people you leave, the people who leave you, the people you lose, they all change you, knowingly or unknowingly.

The people you like, the people who like you, the people you hate, the people who hate you, the people who help you, the people you help, the people who do not help you, the people you don't help, the people who save you, the people you save, the people who trouble you, the people you trouble, the people you learn from, the people who learn from you, the people you look upto, the people who look upto you, the people who talk to you, the people you talk to, the people who don't talk to you, the people you don't talk to. They all change you.

The books you have read, the books you left half read, the books you wish to read, they all change you.

The cinema that you watch, the content that you watch, the music that you listen to, it all changes you.

The gradual change brought about by anything and everything is usually apparently insignificant, but as it compounds over a longer period of time, it brings about the significant difference.

Slower or faster, more or less, we all do change, and that is an undeniable fact.

So, the next time when someone tells you that you've changed, don't deny it, rather accept it, you've changed because you've assimilated all that has come your way, and survived, and that's what really matters.

That Which Prevails...

More often than not, we come across situations which make us want to oppose or retaliate the happenings around us. But when we do so, we are hushed and shushed with the arguments that 'this is very common, very normal', 'this happens with everyone', 'there's nothing new'.

There are issues in the society, which are so imbibed into our day-to-day lives that they seem normal. There are so many practices which are wrong to the very core, but they are so prevalent that they seem to be a part of our lives.

But, is prevalent always right? Just because it is a common practice doesn't mean it is fair. Infact, there is so much unfairness to it.

Women are made to go through so much, only because this is how it has always been. They are considered and treated as secondary. It has always been the case. No matter how 'open minded' we pretend to be, when it comes to the women in the house, they are always meant to be tamed and controlled. Their opinion never matters, their contributions are never acknowledged, their talents are never recognised. All of this is knowingly and intentionally ignored.

We all know it, experience it, and bear with it. But, as soon as one complains about it or tries to retaliate, the only answer is, this is normal. Actually this is the very conditioning of our society. We are taught to normalize such highly abnormal and unfair trend.

This issue needs to be given more thought than ever, as we need to stop normalising such seemingly harmless practices which result in a lot of mental agony and pain to the bearer.

No one has the right to suffocate people in the name of beliefs and conventions. Just let everyone breath.

Are You Successful?

The world is and has always been obsessed with the idea of being successful. It is on almost everyone's wish list to become successful, but how much is successful?

This question needs a lot of thought but is more often than not ignored. And, in most cases success is measured by the amount of money one owns/earns, the the amount of popularity one attains or the type of occupation one gets their hands on.

So, mostly these are the criteria on the basis of which our society defines success. But is it right to do so?

In my humble opinion it isn't and I have my own criteria for success as I sure many of you must be having.

For me, to be successful is to be able to live my dream, to fulfill all that I have ever desired.

I think being able to do what you want to do, which of course should always be morally and legally right, is the biggest success.

In life, most of us live with constraints. What we must do is not always same as what we would rather do. People are grinding themselves in desk jobs when they would rather be running on track, they are cooking when they would like to photograph. People are stuck in the rut, when they would rather go unrestrained and never want to walk the same path twice. While others who would rather stay at a place, are forced to roam. And all this in the pursuit of making a living, earning a lot of money, which is then perceived as success. However, there is always the question earning a living because, you cannot survive on dreams alone. In that case it is always a good choice to try to take time out and work on your dreams endeavours simultaneously.

Because, there is a great sense of satisfaction when you are able to do what you have always wanted to do, no matter how insignificant it may be,that satisfaction is unmatched, and that is success for you.

To be able to do what you wish to do, to be able to fulfill your heart's desires is the truest success. It is upto you to decide, are you successful?

Mom, Maxims & Metaphors

Everyone's mom holds a special place in their lives. There is one thing that is undeniably common to all mothers in the world, the unconditional love and care for their children.

My mummy was no different. We lost her in 2021, and its an irreparable loss. However, the grit and determination that she has gifted us through her actions and exemplary life lessons will continue to guide our lives.

There is one more thing that our mummy was and will always be known for, amongst not just us, but among family and friends as well. And that quality was her use of maxims, proverbs and metaphors. She had a phrase, proverb or saying for almost every situation. That was a commendable quality, just like herself. And everyone who knew her well, or has ever been around her, knows it. Her wit and vocabulary, common sense and determination were unmatched.

Mummy had maxims for seasons, for behaviours, for people, for places, for professions, for food and for what not. You name it, and she would bring it out of her endless literary treasure. She had numerous stories, instances and events to share and that made the conversations with her extremely enriching.

Mummy inherited this quality from her parents and imparted it to us, her children.

Me and my siblings have been immensely fortunate to have been around her and to have learned and inherited the literary pearls which enlighten both the speaker and the listener.

This piece of writing is a tribute to her dignified liveliness and intelligence. For she was strong all her life, till the very end, in all adversities and challenges, which were in abundance for her.

We are so grateful to her for introducing us to all those maxims and metaphors that made us what we are.

We miss you mummy.

To Know And To Understand

Albert Einstein had once remarked," Any fool can know. The point is to understand."

Have you ever wondered that of so many things that you know, of the many facts that you are aware of, how much of it do you really understand.

We the people of today, who are living in a world of information overdose where we have instant access to unlimited facts and news. In such a scenario, it is very easy to be misinformed and equally difficult to be actually aware of the truth.

The problem is, we mistake information for knowledge and knowing of facts for understanding, when actually, these are totally different.

Understanding of anything requires a deeper perspective and mindset. One should have a broad mentality in order to get to the root of issue. Its quite easy to assume, presume or judge people and situations, which we often do, but the real deal is to dig deep and find the reason and logic behind them.

There is another aspect of this very issue of a large gap between knowing and understanding. That is, one's credibility is determined by how much they understand things. Because, there are always people who would only trust those who actually understand and not just cram the facts. It means that one who understands and not just swallows facts for the sake of passing them on, is actually the more trusted one.

Being responsible citizens of the world, it is our duty to understand and not just know things, before we circulate or impart them to others. And especially in the ever connected world of social media, one must truly understand whether any information is genuine or fake, before just sharing it all over thoughtlessly. It is inappropriate to do so, as it often leads to mishappenings and undesirable reactions.

Thus, in any situation or scenario, it is really important to not just 'know' but also 'understand', only then can we do justice to the nature's gift of intellect and the sense of right and wrong.

To Be And To Appear

Someone has famously remarked, "All that glitters is not gold."

Have you ever come across people who aren't what they seem to be? Well, definitely yes. This is the most common trait of humans nowadays, to appear what they aren't. Pretence is considered perfectly normal and infact is a highly desirable characteristic in the present day world.

And if you are one of those people who cannot pretend or don a false to attitude, then you are in for a hard time. You are likely to face hardships, resection and alienation. And this is very much expected also. Because, the world works that way. Fake is the new trend. And most people want to be in trend. So, you cannot expect much fairness here.

In does pain a person like me who loathes and tends to stay away from any pretence. But, the thing is, however hard you may try to do so, you cannot completely get away from it. At some point or other, you are sure to encounter hypocrisy and falsehood.

And there is a problem with genuine people. They tend to take things to heart. They stress a lot over injustice and spurious acts taking place around them. They cannot remain undeterred by such things.

These are the people who worry over others' hypocrisy, even though they know they cannot change anything about it. Such people are vulnerable to feelings of sadness and getting disheartened.

Most people would say that one mustn't worry about what others do or how they behave. One must keep themselves unaffected by such two-facedness.

But a person like me only knows how difficult it is to stay immune to such fallacy.

But to be honest, you can't do much about it, except for recognise such people and not trust them. That's all you can do. Be careful of the shiney coating as it is usually fake.

The Right Thing To Do

We all come across situations which demand a decision from us. These situations require us to choose a course of action out of the available options.

In such situations we find ourselves at the crossroads struggling to decide what's the right thing to do. The thing is, you can't really say.

You cannot really define right or wrong. All you can do is decide to do what feels right and do it anyway.

This continuous conflict that is always there, it pushes you to let go of things that you really want, it brings forth the harsh reality, when all you want to do is dream.

There is always a challenge to choose from the heart and the mind, to ignore one out of the two, because in most cases they disagree with each other.

There is always the challenge of silencing one of them, and especially if that one is your heart. And we all know that we do just that more often than not. We tend to ignore the voices of the heart and choose otherwise. It mostly happens due to societal or familial concerns, but it happens a lot.

However, there are a few courageous ones who dare to follow their heart's way, and kudos to them, because, that path is ever so thorny and prone to a lot of condemnation. However, the other kind of people, the ones who bow to the mind's will are no less courageous. Because, they are the ones who let go of their intense and heartfelt desires only to keep peace around, in this way they sacrifice a lot and suffer in silence.

Listen to the heart or the mind, the right thing to do is always the thing that feels right. And trust me, you'll know it when you need to know.
