I tried to keep the kids busy with different activities throughout the week but it was so hard to go do fun things while JR was at work but I decided one day to take the kids on a hike. The weather was beautiful, we love to hike and it is an activity that doesn't use money. I was a little nervous taking them by myself because truth-be-told I don't have the best sense of direction and all I could think of was that we were going to end up on the other side of the mountain :) Our hike up to Waterfall ended up being awesome. The trail was very busy which was a good thing for me because it kept me on the right path. We had stopped and gotten Subway sandwiches and a few treats to eat so we packed them with us. When we reached the top we ate our lunch, took a few pictures and then headed back down the mountain. It was a great day spent with the kids!!

St. Patricks Day decor

Can you believe that it is March already? I can't. It seems like we were just celebrating Christmas.

I have been working on some projects for March that I wanted to share with you. Right now my projects are needing to be very low budget around here because my husband broke his foot and has not been able to work for the last six weeks, I will have to tell that story at a different time.

I actually took things that I already had around the house and just used a little bit of spray paint and my trusty Silhouette.

I took a piece of wood we had left over from finishing off bedrooms downstairs and spray painted it with white and green stripes. Then all I did was find a shamrock on my Silhouette and cut it out of gold vinyl and stuck it on. I also spray painted some 1x1 wood I cut down, printed out different words, again with the gold vinyl, and stuck them on.

With all of the decor I wanted simple and easy because, lets be honest, you don't really need a lot.

On my kitchen table I added some green by asking my sweet husband to drink a bottle of Mountain Dew for me, I heard no complaints about that, I washed it out and added a few {fake} flowers. I found a printable on Pinterest that I printed off and put in my frame. The black pot was one I had down stairs that just needed a little touch up paint and then I of course I had to add "gold".

{My kids think it is torture when I decorate things with candy because they aren't allowed to eat it}

To finish off I added the March block, again something I already had.

Like I said just so simple but it gives our house enough green that it says Happy St. Patrick's Day.

Valentine arrows

I always hate decorating after Christmas. With Christmas there is always so much stuff and my house feels so full that when Christmas is over and the decorations come down my house feels so empty. I don't feel as though there is a lot you can do to decorate your house in January. Maybe I just don't have enough vision or creativity to come up with things or maybe it is just the fact that coming down off of the high of the Christmas season makes it difficult for me. I decided that this January I would focus more on the holidays to come so my attention started with Valentines. As I was brainstorming I decided that if I had a couple of bigger decorations, it would fill more space and thus make my house seem more "full" like it does at Christmas time. We have had some pallets hanging around that my husband had collected knowing full well that I would use them so in the process of my thinking I thought of using the pallet boards to make big arrows that could sit on my porch against my bench. As I explained to my sweet husband my vision, he went to work and hit the nail right on the head!! They came out exactly how I was thinking. and infact they came out so well that not only did he make me two for my porch but he also made some that I plan on using for normal, every day decor.

Desk chair make-over

For Christmas this year we decided to finish two rooms in the basement

for our older two girls. We have had all three of our girls in one room for a long time and

it was time to give them more space and time to give me my sanity back.

Finishing two rooms at Christmas time around this house was not the brightest decision,

I will have to go into that story later, but we got them done.

We built in some desks for each of them, which I have to say has been a great

thing. During the construction process I knew they would need a cute chair to fit in their new

space so I started doing some looking. I shopped in stores and looked on KSL

but could never find anything that caught my eye. One night I am down stairs, helping with whatever I could, when I noticed our old kitchen table and chair set given to us

when we were first married. (Yes I still had it) It was then that it hit me, we could fix

a couple of these chairs up, give them a facelift and they would be perfect.

This is what the chairs looked like before we started the makeover.

My next bright idea after finding the chairs was that I could get the girls to help me with

them. They were both pretty excited about that and happily agreed.

We went and bought some fabric to cover the seats and then decided to use the left over

paint that we had used to paint their colored wall.

I would much prefer spray paint over using a paint brush any day but we already

had the paint and we knew that it would match perfect.

Here is the painting process, I didn't want to send them out to the garage in the cold

so I let them paint in the kitchen. The excitement of helping quickly wore off though and me the husband ended up finishing the painting.

Next was the covering of the cushions this was quite simple. I got my material the size

I needed it wrapped the cushion and my sweet husband stapled while I held the material

down in place. I think I enjoy projects like this the most

because it involved so many of us working together and I love to see

my girls get a little crafty from time to time.

The end result was exactly what I wanted and I think that they were pleased as well.

One of my favorite Halloween traditions...pumpkin carving.

I am a strong believer in traditions and having lots of them!! Last night we did our pumpkin carving. This is one of my favorites because it is fun to do no matter what age you are so the younger kids and the older kids like it, me and my husband enjoy it and we even get my parents involved. I love seeing my kids squirm over pulling out the pumpkin "guts", watching them as they get their design ready and then seeing their faces as they try to make that creation come to life.

Kitchen desk...what I wish I would have done in the first place, only so much better.

When we were building this house I remember talking to our contractor about extending our cupboards out so that we could have a computer desk. At the time it sounded like a good idea but the contractor felt that it would take up too much space, so I decided against it. Now go forward six almost seven years, four kids later who are all in school and needing space for homework and I am needing a place to put my computer and office. Needless to say I was wishing I would have gone with my instinct and had them build the desk, but alas that is not the case. I finally decided it was time to do something about it. I enlisted my sweet handyman and we got to work.

So I didn't get a ton of great pictures but this gives the idea of what our vision was. I wanted something simple. I decided to paint the top of the desk with chalk paint which my kids were very excited about. My seven year old loves to write her spelling words on it with chalk when she is practicing. We went with a "door" rather than a drawer just for simplicity purposes. We put one big compartment with a door that opens. The compartment holds my laptop, rulers, stapler and other things like pens and paper clips. Sometimes the best part of these projects is watching my husband as he takes what I have told him I want and turns it into a reality!

Just a little Halloween decor...

It seems like every year I pull out the decorations and then I just stare trying to remember how I had decorated last year, remembering that I had liked how I had decorated last year but just can't seem to remember how it was. So I though that this year I would take a few pictures of some of my favorite areas so that I can remember for next year. I LOVE Halloween! I made the pillows this year from some towels I found at Target. They were so easy and they came out just how I wanted them to. The mantel is actually stuff I put together last year but I like the look it has given my mantel this year.

This owl is kind of a funny story. I was very close to my grandparents and I have lots of memories with them. My family would go up to my grandparents house every Sunday evening and there we would visit with them and my other aunts, uncles and cousins. We were together on holidays which included a lot of BBQ's. When my dad's parents passed away I got the picnic table that sat on my grandparents patio and was involved in many of those BBQ's. We have had it for a few years now and it has been fine but it was older and rough and it needed a little TLC. I finally decided to tackle this project of refinishing the table. I had put it off because it was so intimidating to me to try and refinish. I know some of you out there are probably laughing right now wondering how something like this could be intimidating, but for me it was. This is the before picture of the table:

It was weather-worn, the legs on the benches were loose and it needed a good sanding. I decided I wanted to paint it instead of stain it. I sanded it down real good with <strike>my hand sander</strike> (I wish I had a hand sander) my dad's hand sander, tightened the legs so they weren't loose anymore and then got to work on painting.

This is how it turned out. I am so excited with it. I wish I would have been brave and just done it a few years ago. Our family eats outside all the time in the summer, I love to BBQ so now having the table in better condition just makes it that much more enjoyable! I even put a little wording on the one side.

Here's to a new year!!

I really love this time of year. Crazy you might ask but let me explain, I don't love the let down after the holidays, I don't love the continual snow after dreaming of a white Christmas and I don't love the fact that summer seems so far away. What I do love is the renewed energy in the air, the feel of starting fresh, the chance to set goals and make resolutions with a desire to become a better me. I love getting back on a schedule and getting my house back into a working order. With that said in our Family Home Evening on Monday night we talked about setting goals and resolutions and then we set new goals individually as well as in our family. I decided that I needed a little bit more accountability and so I though what better way than to post my goals for all the world to see:

1-I want to make my home more peaceful by finding other ways to handle situations than by yelling. I admit it I yell. I yell when I am mad or frustrated. I yell when my house is a mess, when my day doesn't go how I want it to and I yell when the kids don't want to cooperate. This is a big thing for me, I truly feel that by accomplishing this goal (albeit it will never be an ending goal but at least a new habit) it will make our house more peaceful. It is amazing the effect a mother can have on her home.
2-I want to get back to my healthy lifestyle. Before anyone chuckles at this, because isn't this one of the main goals everyone sets for themselves each year, I have to say I was just going to put lose that blasted ten pounds I put on over the last six to seven months but I knew my girls were going to hear and see these resolutions and so I wanted to put it differently. We all know it is about losing weight but I try really hard to stay more focused on the healthy body aspect so my girls don't get hung up on the weight thing.
3-To not spend so much time on electronics. I think this one is so important. There is such a disconnect when electronics are around and so I am hoping to put them down a little more often and just be a person willing to listen, talk and be involved with what is going on around me.
Well there you have it my goals for 2014!! I am excited and so determined to make this year a good year and what better way then to better myself.

Our family advent...

Our family advent is a new tradition we started last year where each day the kids get to take the paper off of the day and see what fun new activity, adventure, treat or craft we get to do for that day. I know that this type of advent isn't new but it is to our family and we really enjoyed it last year. I enjoyed it because it helped us slow down, spend some time together as a family and enjoy the holiday season. December 1st was decorating the Christmas tree and unfortunately I completely forgot to take pictures of that! December 2nd was watch a Christmas movie and have hot chocolate. This has been a tradition in our family for a while now so I just incorporated it into the advent. We always watch Elf (which our family LOVES!!)

Stay tuned for other advent activities that I will be posting about!

My P90X journey so far and another project in the works

So I bet you all have been wondering about P90X well lets just say that I really did love doing it and I did feel a difference but the biggest thing is there just wasn't enough time when me and my husband could do it together and that was one of the main reasons for me doing it in the first place. I would say that if it was something you could find time for every day then go for it though because it was fun and like I said I did notice a difference. But now on to bigger and better things!! I am feeling some big and not so big projects coming on, I am excited to think of all the different little things that I am wanting to do and I am hoping to get started on some things right away!! For starters, this week I have planned to work on my new Family Home Evening board that has been sitting for such a long time and I finally had an epiphany (if that is how you spell it) on what I wanted to do with the board. My plan is to have it done on Friday and be able to show you all what I came up with. Here's to hoping!! Here is what my board looks like as of today. So far I painted the frame white and sanded it down just a bit then I painted my magnet board orange, I next found some radiator cover at Home Depot to put over the magnet board and that my friends is where I got stuck...

the picture isn't the greatest but you get the idea. It is not as fast paced as I was thinking it was going to be but the moves are definitely a challenge. I have to be honest though we didn't complete every night. Our night schedule is crazy but that isn't an excuse so this week we will do better. I have noticed a difference in my body, probably not anything that anybody else could see yet but I felt more tone. I think the funnest part though was working out with my man and encouraging each other, I love how supportive he is of everything I do! I am not going to post pictures this week but I will next week. I will say that my weight went down two pounds which is way exciting!!

Ab Ripper!!

We finished our first session of an ripper tonight. ..16 minutes of sheer pain. Love it!

One of my new favorite treats!!

I have a new found love...my green smoothie! I was such a skeptic at first, I mean a green smoothie, it is green and it is full of spinach. I love spinach but in a smoothie? I finally decided to try it though and I am so glad I did. Not only is it good but it curbs my cravings for other snacks and it fills me up so I don't eat as much and it has good nutrients. I found the recipe on Pinterest at this link. It was a lot of balancing and more strength training stuff. It was a good work out though and don't think for one second that I was able to do all the reps he wanted us to or that I could do each move with perfect form...HA not even close but it will be fun to see in a couple of weeks if I am progressing. Last night there was more moving, more heart rate increase but again it was not graceful by any means. My body is very sore today though so it must be doing something. I am excited to see the results and hopefully by summertime my goal is to be more comfortable in a swimsuit ;)

P90X What??

Over the last 3 1/2 years I have been trying to find my body that once was before being married and having kids :) I have been pretty successful and feeling good about my progress. I love to run but I love to run outside so living in Utah at this time of year, running outside is not the easiest because of the cold weather and not the healthiest because of the inversion. I have been trying to find me another motivator or something different from my usual to kickstart the next step in this process. Well, I decided to go way outside what I am used to and thought it would be fun to give P90X a try so I enlisted the support of my sweet Handyman to do it with me. So we have taken BEFORE pictures and I will say this is probably one of the most uncomfortable posts for me because I am going to post those pictures which includes me in workout clothes, scary!! I will also be documenting our progress and how our workouts are going so you all can join us and so I have someone to answer to ;). So tonight we started by doing our fitness test in preparation for us starting the program. We had to do a series of exercises starting with pull ups, push ups, in and outs, wall sits, bicep curls, toe touch, vertical reach and then a heart rate maximizer. I will say right now after doing these few and little things I am scared and excited all at the same time to start this program and see what the results will be. So here it goes:)

Happy Valentines Day

Happy Valentines from our house. I hope you celebrated with the ones you love, I know I did. In our home it has become a tradition to have a candlelit dinner with the kiddos. It all started because mine and Handyman's anniversary is the first part of February so we always do a little get-a-way and dinner so Valentines has become a family holiday and the kids love it. Our tradition is for dinner making homemade pizza, the kids tried to make their crust into heart shapes this year, we make them together and add our favorite toppings which at our house is cheese for the kids and ham and pineapple for the adults :) After we got the pizzas made and in the oven we busted out the Just Dance 4. This has become a tradition as well. We divide up into two teams and we have a dance off. The winners get to go to Texas Road House while the losers stay home. Last year my team won and guess what, this year my team won again!! The table had been set ahead of time too. I didn't go into as much detail with the table because the rest of the day was such a busy day for me there just wasn't enough time. I spent the morning passing out PTA Valentines treats to the 850+ kids at my kids school and then helped out in Squeakers Kindergarten class with their party. Then I had to come home and work so our table setting was very simple this year but I found that it didn't matter, we had just as much fun just being together. For our drink we had Love Potion which is Sprite, Raspberry Lemonade and Raspberry sorbet my kids like the drinks because of the glasses that they get to use. The evening was filled with fun, laughing, lots of stories and lots of dancing. We had another wonderful Valentines to help remind us what is most important in life-family.

I am BACK!!
So, I am BACK!!! Have you missed me? Where have I been you might ask? I do't want to say I took a break because really I had just gotten started on my blogging journey but as I got started I realized a few things: I needed more direction and more focus and so I took a "break" to do just that. More direction and focus for my blog and for my life.

You will probably see some changes over the next couple of weeks and even months but hopefully all changes for the good!

So let get to it! At our house we have now entered the "pre" teenage years with my older two girls and lets just say it has not been pretty or easy. We have been having issues at our house with making good choices and I really felt that I needed to do a lesson that helped give them a better perspective of how to make the right choices. As I skimmed through Pinterest I ran across a blog here which got my brain going and soon I had my own spinoff of a lesson.

I decided I wanted to talk about the Holy Ghost and listening to him. I used the story from the July 2012 Friend Turn Upside Down and Push and I had my picture of a life preserver. I read the story to start which really set the tone and I could already tell that the kids were touched by the story. Then I showed them the picture of the life preserver and talked to them about how they help us when we are in danger. Then this is where I put my own little spin on it, I used the LifeSavers but what I did with them is I took different colored strips of paper and put good and bad choices on them and the color of paper with the good choice on it corresponded to that color of LifeSaver. So I had a purple strip that said treat people with respect and then an orange paper that said no respect. I turned them upside down so all they could see was the two colored strips and then asked them if they think just by looking at the colors of paper if they could decide which was the good choice and which was the bad choice and if they thought they could if they were willing to bet their Family Home Evening treat on, if they made the wrong choice they didn't get the treat at the end of the evening. Then I told them I could give something to them that could help them know which one to choose and I had them close their eyes and I put the LifeSaver in their mouth as they tasted the flavor they were able to decide what color to choose. So with the purple paper I gave them a grape LifeSaver. It worked so well and even my three-year-old was able to make the right choice! I was so excited to see the results it really seemed to sink in to them. We ended the evening with a treat (of course). I decided to have powdered donuts because they looked like life preservers. I know that I am still in for some crazy teenage years but I also know that by faithfully following through with family home evening each week and by continually teaching them the gospel principles that it will make it easier.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1JgUeushagQ/UCEenjo-1CI/AAAAAAAAAj8/BMuBPV9TZXk/s1600/IMG_5943.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; width="266" />

Of course we got started so fast I didn't get any before pictures of the garage but just imagine bikes and scooters everywhere, jump ropes out, helmets strewn all over, that was the mess we were in. Handyman took the pallet and cut it in half then he went to work measuring the tires so that each bike would fit in a specific spot.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ifcdtLsdWbI/UCEfakCyfVI/AAAAAAAAAkY/gzONhujoIoU/s1600/IMG_5947.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; />

This is the final product minus a few bikes. We had 2 more that fit in this holder. We hung up skateboards and helmets and I even made "parking spaces" for a few of the younger toys that didn't work for the pallet. That little red motorcycle is Batman's favorite and he loves parking it, he even pulls it in backwards :) Project was a success and I am know enjoying a beautiful and clean garage!
<div class="separator" I took some bead board that I had laying around and cut it up the the size that I wanted it. Well I should rephrase that, I didn't cut the board my wonderful Handyman cut the board for me :) I started painting and at first I just tried to free hand paint but soon found that that wasn't going to cut it so I pulled out the trusty painters tape and taped off my lines. Once the paint was dry I sanded the edges to rough it up a bit. Then my sweet Handyman again used his skills and cut me out a star to glue to it. Nothing fancy but I felt it was perfect to set up on my mantle. I also have been practicing my sewing skills which I will admit I am feeling better about. I sewed my new pillow cover for my pillow on the bench out on my porch and then a sewed a fun banner. Not much but just enough I felt to make it seem more patriotic around our house.
<div class="separator" are they getting along with other kids in the neighborhood, are they acting the way they have been taught, are they getting their chores done, they are fighting with each other? These are the main things that as a mom I have dealt with on a daily basis since they have been on summer break, and it weighs heavy on me because I want them to be good kids and to do what they know is right. Keeping up on my housework is another big issue for me. I am a neat freak and I like my house to be clean and organized and so when it is not I am not a happy camper. I have been trying to find ways to stay organized so that I can be a fun mom and be a happy mom and I have come to the conclusion that this process will be never ending and that I need to learn how to happy even when there is chaos, although I don't think I will ever give up on this one. My husband and I have been on a never ending journey of trying to get ourselves out of debt and become more financially independent. I think this is the one that boggles me the most. We have not always made the best decisions with our money and because of it we are in debt. Each month we put a big chunk of money into different payments to try and get things paid off and because of this our budget is very TIGHT!! This is a frustration for me because it is hard to be so limited and to not be able to do things that we want to do. I would love to travel more and I would love to shop more, but alas this will have to wait and even though I think I am patient there are times that I want to throw patience out the window. Truth be told I decided to start this blog so that I could try and make money to help with our situation but once again found that I need to be patient. I know one day we will be past this (I sure hope) but it is very hard now. I guess with all this going through my head the creative juices just haven't been what I have needed them to be to post.

New bathroom stool

I decided we needed a new stool in the bathroom. We have had the same stool for the last 9 years and it was totally dirty, gross and I was ready for something new. I am wanting to redo the kids' style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_xsSFkaMFkc/T8q9dZ96SoI/AAAAAAAAAg8/BY7GOvvJAM8/s1600/IMG_5148.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; />

and the idea snowballed from there. We actually had talked about a sandbox before but just hadn't really done anything. We have a spot out front that will eventually have plants and trees but for now is just dirt and that is what our Batman has used to play and dig in but I am hoping to plant soon so we decided with this new tractor and his excitement to use it we decided that it was time to move forward with the sandbox. Luckily Handyman has been off of work this week and so it became one of our projects for the week. We knew where we wanted it and I knew that I wanted a lid to try and help keep it contained so with those thoughts in mind we went to work. I guess I should say HE went to work, I really didn't do too much except give ideas :) He dug the hole under the deck which we thought would be a great place because it is shaded there pretty much all the time, then he did up the dimensions we thought would be good. I didn't get pictures of the construction of it because I was busy talking to a neighbor and trying to keep an eye on kids. I am so excited with how it turned out though and the kids are too. We ended up doing an 8X8 box, putting plastic on the bottom to help keep the sand in. It only took 2 truck loads of dirt to fill it. Then came the lid which we decided would be good to put on hinges, hopefully so that it is easier for me to move.
And here is the end result...
<div class="separator"
