Build a complete web site, not just a blog

Don’t limit your web site to just a blog. Feel free to build it out. Although most of my traffic goes straight to this blog, there’s a whole site built around it. For example, the home page of this site presents an overview of all the sections of the site, including the blog, article section, audio content, etc. A lot of people still don’t know what a blog is, so if your whole site is your blog, those people may be a little confused.

Testing and optimization

In the beginning you won’t know which potential streams of income will work best for you. So try everything that’s
reasonable for you. If you learn about a new potential income stream, test it for a month or two, and measure the results for yourself. Feel free to cut streams that just aren’t working for you, and put more effort into optimizing those streams that show real promise.

A few months ago, I signed up for an account with Text Link Ads. It took about 20 minutes. They sell small text ads on my site, split the revenue with me 50-50, and deposit my earnings directly into my PayPal account. This month I’ll make around $600 from them, possibly more if they sell some new ads during the month. And it’s totally passive. If I never tried this, I’d miss out on this easy extra income.

For many months I’ve been tweaking the Adsense ads on this site. I tried different colors, sizes, layouts, etc. I continue to experiment now and then, but I have a hard time beating the current layout. It works very well for me. Adsense doesn’t allow publishers to reveal specific CPM and CTR data, but mine are definitely above par. They started out in the gutter though. You can easily double or triple your Adsense revenue by converting a poor layout into a better one. This is the main reason why during my first year of income, my traffic grew at 20% per month, but my income grew at 50% per month. Frequent testing and optimization had a major positive impact. Many of my tests failed, and some even made my income go down, but I’m glad I did all that testing. If I didn’t then my Adsense income would only be a fraction of what it is now.

It’s cheap to experiment. Every new advertising or affiliate service I’ve tried so far has been free to sign up. Often I can add a new income stream in less than an hour and then wait a month to see how it does. If it flops then at least I learned something. If it does well, wonderful. As a blogger who wants to generate income, you should always be experimenting with new income streams. If you haven’t tried anything new in six months, you’re almost certainly missing some golden opportunities. Every blog is different, so you need to test things for yourself to see what works for you. Failure is impossible here — you either succeed, or you learn something.

How to build traffic

Now if traffic is so crucial, how do you build it up to significant levels if you’re starting from rock bottom?

I’ve already written a lengthy article on this topic, so I’ll refer you there: How to Build a High Traffic Web Site (or Blog). If you don’t have time to read it now, feel free to bookmark it or print it out for later. That article covers my general philosophy of traffic-building, which centers on creating content that provides genuine value to your visitors. No games or gimmicks.

There is one other important traffic-building tip I’ll provide here though.

Blog Carnivals. Take full advantage of blog carnivals when you’re just starting out (click the previous link and read the FAQ there to learn what carnivals are if you don’t already know). Periodically submit your best blog posts to the appropriate carnivals for your niche. Carnivals are easy ways to get links and traffic, and best of all, they’re free. Submitting only takes minutes if you use amulti-carnvival submission form. Do NOT spam the carnivals with irrelevant material — only submit to the carnivals that are a match for your content.

In my early traffic-building days, I’d do carnivals submissions once a week, and it helped a great deal in going from nothing to about 50,000 visitors per month. You still have to produce great content, but carnivals give you a free shot at marketing your unknown blog. Free marketing is precisely the kind of opportunity you don’t want to miss. Carnivals are like an open-mic night at a comedy club — they give amateurs a chance to show off their stuff. I still submit to certain carnivals every once in a while, but now my traffic is so high that relatively speaking, they don’t make much difference anymore. Just to increase my traffic by 1% in a month, I need 11,000 new visitors, and even the best carnivals don’t push that much traffic. But you can pick up dozens or even hundreds of new subscribers from each round of carnival submissions, so it’s a great place to start. Plus it’s very easy.

If your traffic isn’t growing month after month, does it mean you’re doing something wrong? Most likely you aren’t doing enough things right. Again, making mistakes is not the issue. Missing opportunities is.

Whether your money making blogs are about finance, insurance, parenting or fetish products, there are certain things you can do for making each post ‘sticky’. Let me share with you a few strategies you can use to make your posts a lot more gripping – regardless of their length or even topic.

Rule of thumb for every post

Keywords and SEO awareness – When settling right down to write your post, don’t launch into the content immediately. Instead, dedicate the initial paragraph to keywords and keyphrases that are widely searched by worldwide readers. Blend your post with stimulating anecdote, a questionable statement, or a knock-out launching sentence, the “bait” that tell your readers that they will learn some new things. This approach has worked well for most bloggers. We are not here to win any writing prizes, we are here to make money blogging. Remember the most simple and obvious choice is usually the best one.

Your main objective is to attract readership. Therefore, omit any sentences or even paragraphs in your article that don’t fall under these two categories:

1. Words and phrases that persuade people to read the article.

2. Words that readers will want to read.

Your posts should, ideally, move from one category on the other. The aim of your current introduction is to connect visitors in: to give these people a reason to read on. The rest of your post must be dedicated to delivering in your earlier promises.

New bloggers usually make the mistake of concentrating too much on ‘selling’ and forget about adding value to whatever your blog is built in the first place.

Deliver on your promises

Your title will have raised certain expectations about what your post is going to provide. Resist the temptation to provide comprehensive background detail or otherwise include too much preamble on the real value as part of your post. Once your intro is finished, get your post started with the main objective in mind.
A useful habit – Start with your very best self point first. Any reader who was held by your introduction may soon lose interest if the content doesn’t make a sudden impact.

Try to link out as much as possible

Once you’ve done your post, go over it and try to spot possibilities to link out to other websites and blogs. It will add more depth and value to what you write. Even leading bloggers will follow upwards a trackback with an intriguing title, so connecting out can be beneficial from a ‘getting noticed’ perspective, way too. However, always keep Google Adsense TOS in your mind though.

A long post with great contents help in Search Engines (SEO)

There are bloggers who write about 500 words per post and there are those who are even to churn out 3000 to 4000 words per post. For me, I’m not a powerful writer although I have loads of knowledge where I want to share with my readers. Couple with this, I have a short attention span so writing thousands of word per post is definitely not me. But, I always try my best to hover around 800 to 1200 words as much as possible.

Add visual attention

A picture is often worth a thousand words. By adding images, shade and formatting in your post, you’re making them more enjoyable to read. There are readers who appeal to writings, pictures and videos. Emphasizing key essay sentences in bold is a simple yet powerful method to make your posts a lot more gripping.

Make a pact with yourselves to add at least one impression to each post you’re posting, even if the post is short (and even if your image is very little). By adding align=”left” or align=”right” or even align=”center” to the HTML tags on your image, you can press your image to the left, right or center regarding surrounding text. How to blog effectively? Honestly, I’m not really in the mood to answer this question today. You see, I’m in dilemma. Something ‘interesting’ is about to happen and my mind can’t just snap out of it. Happy? Not really. Sad…definitely. Anyway, being your host in this blogging journey, I have a responsibility. To keep you reminded of the tenacity that is needed in building an effective blog, I made a point to myself to at least post an article once a week. These ‘lessons’ may not mean much to most of you but,
I have to remind you about the marathon part and by being here with you at least once a week means that I’m still in the match.

Alrite, to be able to blog effectively, you need to do the following…

1. Set your blogging vision. Nobody knows this better than you. What do you hope to bring out from your blog? For instance, do you want your blogging to introduce your service globally, or do you want to directly make money blogging. If it’s about your service, for example, your law practice, what kinda customers do you target and where? Realize this…you can’t just target every Tom in the world! Maybe you just want to extend your reach to a certain part of the US…Los Angeles perhaps, Miami, etc. You could actually kill two birds with one stone…use your blog to reach your geo-audience and make money from it,even by putting Adsense. In this case, you would still have some earnings when your practice is still new. Remember, your blog is working 24 hours for you.

On the other hand, if you your main objective is to make money blogging, then determine a profitable niche. However, I have to remind you; blogging for money is just a small part of the domain of home-based online business and it is by no means the most lucrative. There are other online business that might bring in the dough faster. If you are interested, you could try this alternativewhereby you will earn without having to wait too long.

2. Identify keywords. Do yourself a favor. Take 2 days to brainstorm on keywords to use for your blog. How about “LA lawyer”, “Los Angeles law practice” etc. Check the stats in Google Adwords Keyword Tool and determine at least 5 keywords that best describe your business.

a. Keyword domain-name. Get a .com, .org or .net if possible if you are targetting the global audience. Recently, the .co is not bad too. If it’s just about Los Angeles, and if you can’t get the three tlds I mentioned, get the .us like LALaw.us. Try not to use .info and .biz though.

b. Topic focused contents.

c. Backlinks. You can do directories submission and also articles submission. If you have little time to do all these tedious work, you can opt for thisto help you. Use your time for better use instead like writing unique contents and interacting with your readers.

6. Avoid linkfarms. There are firms online that offer ferocious link-buildings. Avoid them like a plague for God’s sake. I know of a fellow blogger who used to have a blog ranked highly in Googles with a few keywords about phones. His income…USD 4000 per month just from Google Adsense alone. Lately, Google did two things to punish his aggressive link-building pursuit. He lost the page-rank some 5 months ago, from PR 4 to PR 0. Then, the real nightmare came about a month ago. His blog got demoted from no. 2 for two powerful keywords to no. 50 to 60. Talking about an online limbo!!

My myLot Profile

What is myLot?

Having previously reviewed the pros and cons of using crowdsource websites, Amazon Mechanical Turkand Microworkers to generate some extra income, I thought I’d turn my attention to how to make money withMyLot, a very different sort of make money online program. MyLot is basically a social network site in the same vein as Facebook, but with myLot you make money online by posting comments, uploading photos, starting discussions etc.

Sounds appealing, doesn't it, but what are the pros and cons?

First Impressions and Signing up to myLot

The MyLot site’s appearance has none of the simple elegance of Facebook and is unnecessarily cluttered, in my opinion. There is also a full page advert that wants to load up on their front page if you go there from Google, which is a little irritating.

The sign-up process for MyLot is pretty simple and straightforward, though.
You fill out a form with your basic info and that’s about it. You don’t have to enter your mailing address or bank details, as when you make money online, it will be paid straight into your PayPal account by myLot. (If you don’t have a PayPal account, they are free to obtain and there is a hub that explains PayPal here.) From your PayPal account, you will then have the option of transferring your earnings to your regular bank account if you wish, or you can just spend it on one of the many PayPal friendly online stores.

Using myLot

MyLot works in a similar way to most other social networking sites, such as MySpace and Facebook. As I mentioned earlier, you make money online with MyLot by posting comments, uploading photos, starting discussions, adding friends, messaging people etc. My only quibble would be that, as I mentioned earlier, the myLot site feels a bit cluttered and it takes time to get used to. Also, there is a minor difference of emphasis from sites such as Facebook and Twitter in that much of the social interaction on MyLot revolves around starting and participating in discussions, (rather than the Facebook/Twitter system where each user has his or her their own “wall” where they and others post to).

Earnings and Payments

The exact formula that myLot uses to calculate how much you earn is not made public, but it’s based on the amount of activities such as posting comments, uploading photos, and starting discussions that you do to make money. The more active that you are on the site, the more you'll make money.

I can only tell you of my own experience and what other users say regarding earning rates, so the following info may not be an entirely accurate indication of the sort of sums that people earn. I visit the site on a daily basis for about 10-15 minutes each day, start a discussion, post a few comments upload a photo, and I make about 5-10 cents/day. There are site users on there who are more active than me and say that they typically earn a dollar a day or more, however.

Another factor in the rate that you make money is the myLot points that you gradually build up over time (a bit like a hub score?). The more experienced myLot people who use the site for longer periods and interact more tend to have much bigger scores than myself, a relative rookie who’s only on there for 10 or 15 minutes/day. I would expect to make money at an increased rate over time, however.

The other thing that I should mention is that there is a $10 minimum earnings threshold before they pay you. This can seem a little frustrating when you’re only bringing in 8 cents/day like me! If you enjoy social networking, however, and don’t mind spending a little time on the site, then you are getting paid for doing something that you do anyway, which can’t be bad!

In summary I'd say that you will make money if you join the MyLot site, but i wouldn't expect to buy a new car with your earnings!

Let’s assume that you have just finished the hard work of designing and setting up your new website. Now you want Google and other major search engines to be made aware that your site exists. The process of getting your site indexed in the organic results is the beginning of your off-page SEO. But before you even attempt to use the methods I discuss here it is imperative that your on-page SEO has been fine-tuned.

Get Indexed in Google Within 24 Hours

According to Google
it can take 5-6 weeks for a new site to be listed in the SERP’s – that sounds like forever in the world of instant gratification that we live in. Don’t fret over this as I will reveal a little secret that I have used to get my new sites listed within a day. The underlying dynamics of this process has to do with the trust factor. Google takes a long time to index and list a new site because the new site has not established any measure of authority or trust in the eyes of the BIG G. But if an authority site endorses the new site, the new site receives an element of credibility and Google has no choice but to index it at once!

The Process of Getting Indexed Fast

Now I will like to explain the process to get your site indexed. Assume we have just started a site that targets the keyword “affiliate marketing for newbies”, and we want to get the site indexed. I’ve tried this and it works like magic. So here is what I recommend you do:

Type in the keyword “affiliate marketing for newbies” in the Google search box
Analyse the results and identify blogs that have a PR of 5 or more. Higher Page Rank is a sign of authority.
Next, you should contact a few of the blog owners of the high PR sites and tactfully propose a guest post.
Ensure that you adopt a professional tone when conversing with the webmaster.
If your approach is correct, you will get the opportunity to guest post and a link or two to your site. Fantastic! You’ve just received a high PR backlink and if it is a PR5 link, your site will be indexed within 2-3 days, but if it is PR6 or higher you can expect your site to be indexed within 24hrs or less. This little secret has worked tremendously well for me, and it will certainly get your new site indexed in no time at all. On a side note: if your site has been “Google slapped”, this trick will help your site climb up again.
