Immediate future with Natural gas fuel

Too often in Congress, and in our political debate, people stake out a position and, in the course of defending that position, refuse to credit anything their opponent is saying. We’ve all seen that.
When it comes to passing a clean energy plan for the United States, we need to take a broader, longer look at all of the tools we have at our disposal to accomplish two very important goals: Enhancing national security and reducing our dependency on foreign oil.
Far from being mutually exclusive, these two crucial goals are complementary and should be understood as goals that are beyond partisan politics. They really are crucial for our country’s future, along with the pressing need we also have to spur job growth and get our economy fueled up.
In spite of all the talk about energy independence since the first “energy crisis” in 1973, we are still importing nearly two-thirds of the oil we use in the United States. Why is this a national security problem? Because we are dependent on that oil from many countries and regions that are unstable or unfriendly to the United States.
Month after month, we are spending about $25 billion to buy foreign oil. Over the course of a year, that may add up to $300 billion. That is money that should be circulating through the economy of the United States, instead of the economies of Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Venezuela.
To show just how dangerous this situation is becoming, earlier this month CNBC reported that Russia has surpassed Saudi Arabia as “the top crude oil producer in the world, pumping a record 10.01 million barrels of output in September.”
Russia is the largest single supplier of natural gas to much of Europe. Last year, in the dead of winter, in a price dispute with Ukraine, Russia simply turned a valve and shut off supplies to Europe to force the affected countries to bring pressure on Ukraine to settle.
This is where using all the tools in our toolbox comes into play.
One bill making its way through the Senate and the House is the NAT GAS (S.1408) Act, which will help provide tax incentives to change cars and trucks running on imported gasoline and diesel to natural gas.
With recent improvements in the techniques and technology to recover natural gas from the enormous shale deposits under the continental United States, studies indicate we could have natural gas deposits that would last for more than 100 years. This is a sea-change from what we thought our natural gas reserves were prior to being able to utilize these so-called “shale plays.”
Going to domestic natural gas as a principal transportation fuel will also have significant, if not almost immediate, impacts on the U.S. economy. Along with jobs being created in other alternative energy areas, we can produce and/or save thousands of jobs in the supply chain of natural gas vehicles, from the well-head to the manufacturing floor and from sales and distribution to fueling and maintenance.
Seventy percent of the oil we import is used as transportation fuel. We can’t run 18-wheelers on batteries and, while we can and should do more with renewable energy sources like wind and solar, putting fuel in the gas tank is a special challenge. There are over 10 million natural gas vehicles in the world, but only about 130,000 in the United States. Natural gas can be used in virtually any vehicle running on our streets and highways.
Natural gas is cleaner than either oil or coal. In fact, natural gas emits almost 30 percent less carbon dioxide than oil, and just under 45 percent less carbon dioxide than coal. And natural gas produces almost no particulate emissions.
Natural gas can and must be developed in an environmentally responsible way that includes involvement from local communities. But properly developed, it can play a significant role in our energy future.
It is a bridge fuel that can get us to the next era of clean fuels. Natural gas will not last forever, and we will not need to use it forever. But, as a transition fuel, it can help us do our part in cleaning up the planet, it can reduce our dependence on foreign oil and it can provide a real boost for jobs and the economy.

Stats released on Cash for Clunkers program

(11/05/2009) By Saudi Ali - We now know how many vehicles were traded in to Nebraska car dealers under the highly successful Cash for Clunkers program. The U.S. Department of Transportation said 5,100 cars were traded in here in the Cornhusker State.

It totals nearly $21.6 million in rebates.

The most commonly traded in vehicle? The Ford F–150 pickup.

Also, more new Ford F-150s were bought here than any other vehicle in the state.

FORT BRAGG, NC: Soldiers with 3rd Battalion, 27th Field Artillery (HIMARS), drove their High Mobility Artillery Rocket System out the rear of an Air Force C-17 Globemaster III at Pope Air Force Base, N.C., Oct. 22, with a new advancement that will get them into the fight faster.
The 'Hot Panel' program allows the HIMARS to link into an aircraft's GPS and track itself in the air, anywhere in the world. The advancement will allow Soldiers to switch between a land mode and an air mode so the vehicle tracking system can find its location and its targets rapidly when it exits an airplane.
"It allows you to start up the launcher in flight and roll off the airplane ready to shoot," said Steve Coventry, system and test engineer with Lockheed Martin.
Engineers from Lockheed Martin and Redstone Arsenal, Ala., who are working together on the project, came to Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base to gather data through flight tests using the HIMARS vehicles and a C-17.
Scott Kalfus, Lockheed Martin, missiles and fire control, system and test engineer said all the vibrations from the flight will be recorded on specialized equipment and used to develop the right programming for the HIMARS.
"The tests will allow us to correlate the maneuvers to the data the machines are collecting," Kalfus said.
The flight plan included take off, ground fire avoidance measures, approach and landing. They engineers working on the project also implemented a program that will sense movement and switch the navigational unit between air mode and land mode.
The flights were used to verify the data from previous flights and to confirm the changes already implemented were working correctly.
"We had to make changes in the position navigation unit," Coventry said. "It's designed for ground vehicles. We had to make several changes to the software to handle the greatly increased speeds of a C-17 and make allowances for avoidance maneuvers. It's very stressful on the navigation unit to maintain accuracy during flight."
"We did flight tests before and collected data," he continued. "We made changes to the software. Now we're going to test those changes. The fire control system had to tell the navigation unit to go into air mode. The computer had to tell it there are no odometer inputs. It has to go strictly off the inertial movement unit and the GPS."
According to James Cyr, precision fires project office at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., the data collected from this round of test flights will be computed and used to develop the final version of the software due out in 2011.
The plan is to make the system as simple as possible for Soldiers to allow them to get into the fight quicker.
"We want this to be as user friendly as possible, so we want to make it as automatic as we can," Coventry added. "We have to provide a link between the GPS in the aircraft and the launcher. Right now it is a physical connection. In the future it will be a wireless connection. GPS will broadcast inside the aircraft. "

Centerbore and Hubcentric Rings

This refers to the center bore in the wheel that centers the wheel on the hub of the car. Since most wheels are mass produced, they have a large center bore to accommodate several different vehicles. If there is a vibration problem, it is recommended that you use hub centric rings. Hub rings are hard plastic rings that link the wheel to the vehicle. This centers the wheel and makes your wheel hub centric. Without hub rings it is possible to get vibrations even if the wheel and tire package is completely balanced.

Wheel Offset

The wheel offset is the distance from the hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. There are three types of offsets.

Positive Offset
A positive offset means the mounting surface of the wheel is positioned in front of the true centerline of the wheel. Most factory rims will have this type of offset.

Zero Offset
When the hub mounting surface is centered within the rim, it is known as a zero offset.

Negative Offset
If the hub mounting surface is on the brake side of the center line of the rim, it is considered a negative offset or "deep dish".

Bolt Patterns

A wheel's bolt-circle-diameter is the diameter of an imaginary circle drawn through the center of the wheel's mounting-bolt holes. Different vehicle makes and models have varying bolt patterns.

If the pattern has an even number of mounting holes (four, six or eight lugs) simply measure from the center of one stud hole directly across the center of the wheel to the center of an opposite stud hole.

With a five-lug pattern, measure from the center of one stud hole to the center of the farthest stud hole, skipping the adjacent hole. The resulting measurement is slightly smaller than the actual bolt-circle diameter.

For example, a vehicle with a bolt pattern of (5 x 120) means this vehicle's hub has five bolts or lugs, which measure 120 millimeters apart from one another diagonally. Below is a chart on how to measure bolt patterns. Wheelfire.com has a fitment program that calculates this for you.

Wheel Construction

This is the most common form of rim manufacturing. Liquid metal is poured into a mold and allowed to harden until the finished wheel is cool enough to be taken out of the casting.

Counter Pressure Casting
This method actually sucks the metal into a mold using a vacuum. This reduces impurities making the wheel much stronger than a low pressure cast rim.

A vehicle registration plate is a metal or plastic plate attached to a motor vehicle or trailer for official identification purposes. The registration identifier is a numeric or alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies the vehicle within the issuing region's database. In some countries, the identifier is unique within the entire country, while in others it is unique within a state or province. Whether the identifier is associated with a vehicle or a person also varies by issuing agency. Depending on the country, the vehicle registration plate may be called a licence plate (in British English), a license plate (in American English), a number plate, or a tag.
As it is a legal requirements of any country in the whole world therefore most goverments require a registration plate to be attached to both the front and rear of a vehicle, although certain jurisdictions or vehicle types, such as motorcycles, require only one plate, which is usually attached to the rear of the vehicle. National databases relate this number to other information describing the vehicle, such as the make, model, color, year of manufacture, engine size, type of fuel used and mileage recorded during the vehicles annual (or bi-annual) road worthiness test, Vehicle identification (Chassis) Number and the name and address of the vehicle's registered owner or keeper.

In some jurisdictions plates will be permanently assigned to that particular vehicle for its lifetime. Some countries permit the re-registration of the vehicle with "personal" ("vanity" or "Cherished Mark") plates. When the vehicle is destroyed or exported to a different country it will require re-registering in the country of import. China requires the re-registration of any vehicle that crosses its borders from another country, such as for overland tourist visits, regardless of the amount of time it is due to remain there; this has to be arranged with prior approval.

Licence plates have been around almost as long as automobiles, appearing in the earliest period of the transition from the horse, 1890 to 1910. France was the first to introduce a license plate, in 1893, followed by Germany in 1896. [1] The Netherlands were the first to introduce a national licence plate, called a "driving permit", in 1898. The first licences were plates with a number, starting at 1. By 8 August, 1899 the counter was at 168. When the Netherlands chose a different way to number the plates on 15 January, 1906 the last issued plate was 2065.

World's largest rocket launch by NASA...

(CNN) -- NASA is set to launch the world's largest rocket Tuesday,
conducting research to help return astronauts to the moon.
The 327-foot rocket, called the Ares I-X, is set to launch at 8 a.m. ET from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA said. The empty rocket will help NASA collect information for future missions.
"Ares I-X will bring NASA one step closer to its exploration goals to return to the moon for ambitious exploration," NASA said in statement.
The launch, which NASA is calling a test, is among four test launches of Ares I-X that will go on until 2012.
The space agency hopes the rocket eventually will replace the aging space shuttle and conduct voyages to the moon and Mars.
NASA researchers have said that a trip to the moon could not happen before 2015.
The launch comes at a critical time, when NASA is waiting for President Obama to decide future funding for the agency.
An independent committee reviewing the future of space flight recently reported that the U.S. space program appears to be pursuing goals that exceed current funding.
The committee also recommended to the White House that funding for NASA's under-construction international space station should be extended until 2020.
Though the launch of Ares I-X is scheduled for early Tuesday, weather could cause the space agency to delay.
Late Monday, the agency said it had a 40 percent chance at launch because of bad weather. If weather conditions do not improve, NASA will launch Wednesday.

15 to 20 killed in train collided in Egypt....

Trains collide in Egypt, killing up to 20

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Between 15 and 20 people died when two trains collided outside of Cairo, Egypt, Saturday night, and officials expect the death toll to rise, the country's Health Ministry said.

Another 40 to 50 people were injured when one train traveling from Cairo to Asyut crashed into a train en route from Giza to Fayyoum, Deputy to the Health Ministry Mohammed Sarhan told state-run Nile News TV. The Fayyoum-bound train was stationary when it was struck in Al-Ayyat district, he said.

The collision occured in Kafr Girza, a village in Al-Ayyat district of October 6th province, Nile News TV reported. Al-Ayyat is about 70 km (40 miles) south of Cairo.

The wreck's location posed a problem for emergency personnel, Sarhan said, because the site is next to a canal. Security forces used tree trunks and branches to create a bridge to the dead and injured. Some bodies were recovered from beneath the trains, he said.

People were still trapped beneath the wreckage late Saturday, Nile News TV reported. Some of the dead were found buried under the trains, Sarhan said.

Eighty ambulances were sent to the scene to transport the injured to local hospitals, government spokesman Ahmed Rady said in a statement.

The Transportation Ministry has ordered an investigation, Rady said. Government investigators are searching for the train's recorders, reported the country's official news agency, MENA.

Egyptian National Railways also launched an investigation into the collision of their trains, MENA said.

The governor of October 6th province ordered that families of the victims recieve compensation, MENA reported. The Egyptian government has issued compensation to families of train crash fatalities and to those injured in crashes in the past.

Train disasters in Egypt over the past 12 years have killed hundreds.

In August 2006 at least 57 people died and 128 were injured when two passenger trains collided and burst into flames in Qalyoubiya Province, just north of Cairo. A month later three people died and 24 were injured when a cargo train collided with a passenger train in the same area.

More than 370 people died in February 2002 when a fire broke out near the rear of a passenger train en route to Luzzur from Cairo. At least 44 passengers died when they leapt from the burning cars while the train was still moving.

miles -- while not responding to control tower communications -- and said the pilots were "cooperative, apologetic and appreciative."

The Minneapolis-St. Paul [Minnesota] Airport Police report on the incident, released Friday, said officers asked flight attendants to keep passengers in their seats while they checked out the cockpit, where, they said, "the door was standing open."

The police report identified the pilot as Timothy B. Cheney and the first officer as Richard I. Cole.

"The pilot ... indicated they had become involved in conversation and had not heard radio communications," the report said. "They indicated there had been no involvement from anyone in the cabin."

"Both volunteered to a preliminary breath test with the result being .000 for both parties," the report said.

The lead flight attendant, the report said, told officers that she was unaware there had been an incident aboard.

Northwest Flight 188 -- carrying 144 people and five crew members -- flew past the Minneapolis airport during a mysterious 78 minutes of radio silence beginning about 7:56 p.m. ET Wednesday night.

The National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the incident, is hoping the plane's cockpit voice recorder will either confirm the pilot's account or provide evidence of another possible explanation, including whether the captain and first officer had fallen asleep.

However, approached outside his home Friday, the first officer told CNN affiliate KGW that "nobody was asleep in the cockpit and no arguments took place." Cole was referring to NTSB's earlier statement that said, "The crew stated they were in a heated discussion over airline policy and they lost situational awareness."

"There's a lot of misinterpretation going on," Cole said, though he refused to comment further.

The voice recorder is capable of recording only 30 minutes of audio, federal accident investigators said Friday. The plane was in the air for another 45 minutes after radio contact was restored, meaning that if the recorder was working properly, anything the pilots would have said during the time they were not answering radio calls would have been recorded over.

But a former accident investigator told CNN the voice recorder may still provide valuable information, because the pilots could have discussed the earlier events on the way back to Minneapolis.

The separate flight data recorder also could prove valuable because it would have recorded actions taken by the pilots during the 78 minutes they did not respond to repeated calls from air traffic controllers, the former accident investigator said.

The safety board said Friday afternoon that experts were reviewing the solid-state voice recorder. It said only that the recorder "captured a portion of the flight that is being analyzed," and added there would be no further comment.Video Watch as former NTSB official calls long silence "unacceptable" »

Meanwhile, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which scrambled fighter jets for the wayward plane did not launch them, said it was reviewing procedures for launching the fighters to track potentially hijacked or suspicious aircraft.

At issue, according to a senior U.S. official directly familiar with the timeline of the incident, is the FAA's apparent delay in notifying NORAD that the Northwest jet was not in contact with controllers.

The official, who declined to be identified because both the military and the FAA are reviewing the entire incident, said that the FAA's request for military involvement came after the plane passed the Minneapolis airport. NORAD scrambled fighter jets at two locations. But as they approached the runway for takeoff, the FAA reported being back in contact with the Northwest flight, and the fighters stayed on the ground.

"My real question is why we did not know of the 'radio out' situation from the FAA sooner," the officials said. "The FAA is also looking into that," the official told CNN.

Since the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, NORAD has regularly launched fighter jets to track aircraft in unusual situations such as when they deviate from flight plans, lose radio contact or enter restricted airspace.

According to a second U.S. official, NORAD is in constant contact with the FAA so it can respond when situations arise.

Reported instances of two pilots falling asleep are rare. In August, the safety board concluded its investigation into a February 13, 2008, incident in which two pilots aboard a Go airlines flight fell asleep and traveled 26 miles beyond the destination of Hilo, Hawaii, before waking and contacting air traffic controllers.

Northwest Airlines is part of Delta Air Lines, which issued a statement Thursday, saying it is "cooperating with the FAA and NTSB in their investigation, as well as conducting our own internal investigation. The pilots have been relieved from active flying pending the completion of these investigations."

It said Flight 188 landed safely in Minneapolis just after 9 p.m.

Delta suffered another major embarrassment this week when a Delta pilot landed a passenger jet on a taxiway at Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport instead of the runway. The NTSB is investigating that case as well.

Auto consultant says US auto sales outlook rosier

DETROIT — An automotive consulting firm is raising its forecast for 2010 U.S. auto sales, saying improved employment and auto lending numbers should translate to higher sales.

CSM Worldwide raised its forecast Wednesday to 11.8 million vehicles from 11.2 million vehicles. Sales at that rate would represent the first year-over-year increase in U.S. vehicle sales since 2005, when automakers sold 16.9 million vehicles.

CSM said it expects unemployment to peak in the first quarter of next year, then slowly improve throughout the year. Consumer confidence will grow as household finances and auto lending show improvement by the third quarter, the Northville-based company said.

By the fourth quarter, CSM forecasts the annualized vehicle selling rate will be 13.6 million vehicles. That rate shows what sales would be if they continued at the same pace for a full year.

CSM's U.S. sales forecast for 2009 remains unchanged at 10.1 million units, down 23 percent from 2008.

Plug-In Cars Are Almost Here, but Charging Stations Lag

DETROIT — Even though several automakers plan to begin selling electric vehicles next year, their sales may be limited by the lack of a national infrastructure to support them, speakers at a conference here on plug-in cars said on Wednesday.

Utilities that serve most of the nation’s electricity customers said they were aware of the issue, and would take several steps, including working to help develope plans for charging stations, and would use battery-powered vehicles themselves.

Among the biggest challenges for automakers is overcoming consumers’ fears of becoming stranded with a dead battery — what the industry calls “range anxiety.”

“This isn’t just an experiment for us,” said William Clay Ford Jr., Ford Motor’s executive chairman. “We can provide the vehicles; we can provide the hardware. But we cannot unilaterally solve all of the national issues.”

Though automakers are testing numerous propulsion technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells, batteries are seen as the most promising near-term answer for reducing oil imports and emissions. President Obama has called for a million plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles to be on the nation’s highways by 2015.

To encourage adoption of electric vehicles, charging stations that follow a nationwide standard eventually will be needed at every shopping mall, parking garage and apartment building and at countless other locations, said Anthony F. Earley Jr., the chief executive of DTE Energy in Detroit.

“The beauty of electricity is it’s already there,” said Mr. Earley, who also is chairman of the Edison Electric Institute, which represents publicly traded utility companies in the United States. “If we change the building codes to say every time you build an apartment building, build in a charging station, that is not a large cost, as opposed to telling every gas station to put in a hydrogen tank just in case we might need hydrogen later on. So we’ve kind of got a jump-start.”

Among the issues that utilities hope to address are how to keep electric vehicles from overloading the electrical system, especially as their numbers grow.

“The last thing you want is millions of electric vehicles plugged in at 5 o’clock on a hot summer afternoon when the grid is already being taxed,” Mr. Earley said.

Ford is one of several carmakers with concrete plans for electric vehicles in the near future. It intends to start selling a battery-powered version of its Transit Connect commercial van next year, followed by an electric Ford Focus sedan in 2011 and other plug-in vehicles in later years.

Nissan is introducing its electric car, the Leaf, to businesses next year and to consumers by 2012. General Motors plans to sell its Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in vehicle with a range-extending gasoline engine, late next year.

Once an infrastructure starts to develop, electric vehicles are expected to grow in popularity — not just because of their environmental benefits, but also because they cost less to operate than a gas-powered vehicle.

“The price in the future is going to be cents per mile, said Tom Kuhn, the Edison Electric Institute’s president. “It’s not miles per gallon.”

BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Sales for natural gas vehicles are forecast to pass 3 million worldwide for the first time by 2015 with growth from the U.S. market, a research report said.

Global energy market research firm Pike Research in its latest report on clean energy predicts the number of natural gas vehicles on the road worldwide should increase from 9.7 million in 2008 to 17 million by 2015.

The report recognizes the presence of natural gas vehicles on the market currently but said the fuel technology is not embraced globally because of the lack of refueling station infrastructure.

Dave Hurst, an industry analyst contributing to Pike Research's clean transportation practice, said the technology could see growth in the corporate and government fleets.

"Governments, fleet managers, and consumers are increasingly recognizing the environmental benefits of lower emissions from natural gas vehicles," he said.

The report noted that Central Asia and Latin America are strong markets for natural gas vehicles currently, though the United States and Canada might see rapid growth.

Pike Research said it anticipates growing acceptance of natural gas vehicles as governments move on energy security and climate change legislation, with a 5.5 percent increase in sales by 2015.

ANGLETON — Two children were ejected from a vehicle in a three-car crash at the intersection of Loop 274 and Wilkins Drive near the Brazoria County Courthouse on Saturday afternoon.

The children were taken by medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston as a precaution, Angleton Police Department Cpl. John Delgado said. The children were alert and talking and, “did not appear to have life-threatening injuries,” Delgado said.

Occupants of all three vehicles were from Angleton and police did not have ages Saturday afternoon.

At about 2:40 p.m. Saturday, a Chrysler Pacifica driven north on Loop 274 by Margaret Luna apparently failed to stop at a traffic light, Angleton officer Janet Heckler said. The Pacifica struck the side of a Chevrolet Tahoe driven west on Wilkins, across Loop 274, by Eloy Guerrero, Delgado said.

“The Chrysler went through the intersection and T-boned the second vehicle,” he said. “After the impact, it made a 360 and collided with a third vehicle.”

The third vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado driven by Marsha Randal, was stopped facing south at the signal on Loop 274 at Wilkins.

There were four children in the Tahoe and two were ejected when the back glass was apparently forced open upon impact, Delgado said. Two other children in the vehicle weren’t ejected. Two adults in the Tahoe were wearing seat belts but the children were not, Heckler said.

All others involved were wearing seat belts, she said. Randal was taken by ambulance to Angleton Danbury Medical Center in good condition, Delgado said.

No citations were issued at the scene but citations are pending, Heckler said.

Neither alcohol nor speed likely was a factor, she said.

Traffic along Loop 274 was slowed for about an hour Saturday afternoon.

Low weight aluminum offers real-world fuel economy and emissions benefits to

tons of greenhouse gas emissions and 35 billion gallons of gasoline annually.

"Lightweight aluminum presents an opportunity for the trucking industry to
improve fuel efficiency and payload, reduce operating costs and emissions,
improve durability, increase resale value, and meet sustainability goals because
aluminum is infinitely recyclable. All this, without sacrificing safety and
performance," Summe said.

Other facts Summe highlighted include:

* Road testing of a bus fleet in China indicates a 3,000 pound weight savings
achieved through an aluminum spaceframe, forged aluminum wheels and aluminum
skin - the body is 46% lighter than a comparable steel bus body.
* An aluminum wheel can improve tire rolling resistance by up to 3% over a
comparable size steel wheel - 3% less rolling resistance equals 1% fuel savings.

* Aluminum provides increased value and mileage when matched with hybrid
electric vehicles, compared to steel bodied vehicles.

Wedding gifts among items stolen from seven vehicles

The Hilliard Police Department reported property worth $5,820 was stolen at 10 p.m. Oct. 4 from seven vehicles in the 3900 block of Lyman Drive. Prescription medication, wedding gifts, GPS units and iPods were among the stolen items, police reported.

Police reported jewelry worth $2,120 was stolen Oct. 5 from a residence in the 3900 block of Hill Park Road.

Property worth $3,920 was stolen at 12:05 a.m. Oct. 3 from an unlocked vehicle in the 6000 block of Morganwood Square, police reported.

A laptop computer, passport, printer, GPS unit and credit cards were among the stolen items, according to the report.

Property worth $3,200 was stolen at 1 a.m. Oct. 4 from seven vehicles in the 3800 block of Park Mill Run Drive. Computer equipment and GPS units were among the stolen items, according to reports.

Police reported a woman was assaulted at 2:15 p.m. Oct. 7 in the 4600 block of Leap Road.

An iPod was stolen at 2 a.m. Oct. 5 from an unlocked car in the 3100 block of Polley Road, police reported.

Police arrested a 34-year-old man at 10:25 a.m. Oct. 3 for disorderly conduct in the 3400 block of Trabue Road.

Police reported an assault at 7:25 a.m. Oct. 5 at Hilliard Davidson High School, 5100 Davidson Road.

A wallet was stolen at 4 p.m. Oct. 6 from a vehicle in the 4600 block of Cemetery Road, according to reports.

Two vehicles were broken into at 12:30 a.m. Oct. 5 in the 3500 block of Polley Road. A purse and GPS unit was taken, police reported.

A purse and GPS unit were stolen at 4 p.m. Oct. 3 from an unlocked car in the 3200 block of Bendbrook Pond Drive, according to reports.

A cell phone charger and GPS unit were stolen at 12:05 a.m. Oct. 6 from a vehicle in the 5000 block of Breckenhurst Drive, police reported.

Police arrested a 34-year-old man at 10:25 a.m. Oct. 3 for disorderly conduct and trespassing in the 3400 block of Trabue Road.

Police reported a laptop computer was stolen at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 7 from a vehicle in the 4100 block of Goldthread Court.

Power tools were stolen at 12:25 a.m. Oct. 7 from a vehicle in the 4100 block of Checkerberry Court, according to reports.

Police reported a vehicle was stolen at 3 a.m. Oct. 7 in the 5200 block of Wyandot Place.

A vehicle was vandalized at 5 p.m. Oct. 8 in the 3800 block of Trueman Boulevard, according to reports.

Police reported a vehicle was vandalized at 10:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in the 5000 block of Cemetery Road.

A residence was vandalized Oct. 8 in the 3900 block of Columbia Street, according to the report.

Police arrested a 47-year-old woman at 10:35 a.m. Oct. 8 for disorderly conduct at Avery Road and Dexter Avenue.

A laptop computer, GPS unit, iPod, checks and an external hard drive were stolen at 11 p.m. Oct. 8 from a vehicle in the 4400 block of Shire Mill Road, according to reports.

Police reported a GPS unit and parking pass were stolen at 11 p.m. Oct. 8 from a vehicle in the 4300 block of Shire Cove Road.

Woman dies on Rt. 506 in single-vehicle crash

No matter how slow and neat the way you are driving and even you did not crash with other vehicles but crash by your own single vehicle could always happen to you in this modern world with new technology as the vehicle you are driving is like a killing machine.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
HILLSBORO, Ohio—A 28-year-old southern Ohio woman was killed early yesterday when her car veered off the right side of a road and struck a tree.

Mary B. Hodges of Hillsboro was driving west on Rt. 506 in Highland County about 1:30 a.m. when the crash occurred. After Hodges' car swerved over the center line, she overcorrected and lost control, according to the Wilmington Post of the State Highway Patrol.

Hodges, briefly trapped in her 1994 Ford Probe, was taken by ambulance to Highland District Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Victims identified in train-car accident

A vehicle-train collision Sunday afternoon left one woman dead and two others seriously injured.

According to the Crawford County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred at around 4:50 p.m. .1 miles west of 150st on North Road in Girard. The sheriff's office reports that a 1996 passenger vehicle failed to yield at a railroad crossing and was struck by a southbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train.

The driver, Leseana Hightower, 22, Girard, was pronounced dead at the scene. Floyd Hayes, 29, Girard, and Floyd Hayes Jr., 7 months old, were air-lifted to a hospital in Kansas City. Their condition is unknown.

The occupants of the train were uninjured.

The accident remains under investigation.

Between 4:20 and 6:30 a.m. Sunday, someone broke into a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado in a parking lot in the 3600 block of Debby Drive and took $450 in cash and a semi-automatic weapon valued at $300, police reports show. Damage to the passenger-side rear window was estimated at $200.

Someone took a JVC CD player valued at $200 from a car parked in the 3200 block of Dorchester Street between 2:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. Damage to the dashboard of the 1997 Chevrolet Lumina was estimated at $250, according to police reports.

Audio electronics valued at more than $2,000 were taken early Saturday from a vehicle parked outside a nightclub at 845 W. South Blvd. Reported stolen from a 1992 black Isuzu were two turntables, one valued at $400, the other at $460; a Panasonic mixer valued at $600, a black case valued at $200 and a black box valued at $500.

A 42-inch Vizio flat-screen television valued at $1,700 and a Toshiba laptop computer valued at $2,500 were reported taken from a residence in the 500 block of Winston Drive between 4 p.m. Friday and 12:10 a.m. Saturday.

Someone took a Rheem air-conditioning unit valued at $2,000 from a residence in the 200 block of Destin Street, according to police reports. The thief also destroyed a front door screen window valued at $200.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, Montgomery police received a report that $2,600 had been taken from a residence in the 1600 block of Trinity Boulevard.

PALM HARBOR —A Florida Highway Patrol trooper fired a shot at a man who led him on a chase Saturday through a Palm Harbor neighborhood.

According to FHP spokesman Sgt. Larry Kraus, Kanaan Ahmad Magdi, 21, of Palm Harbor stole items from a Hess Express gas station about 8 a.m. and left in a Jeep Compass.

The clerk at the store notified a trooper who happened to be at the store at 2485 Nebraska Ave. about the same time, Kraus said.

The trooper followed Magdi into a nearby community and tried to conduct a routine traffic stop.

Magdi stopped his vehicle at 2655 Nebraska Ave. When the trooper got out of his vehicle, Magdi "put the car in reverse and started backing up towards him," Kraus said. The trooper, who said he feared for his life, fired at the vehicle. Several shots hit the Jeep, Kraus said.

Magdi then led the trooper on a short chase, Kraus said. Reaching the corner of Grenoble and Glen Haven drives, Magdi gave up.

Magdi was being held Sunday at the Pinellas County Jail, charged with theft and assault on a law enforcement officer, among other charges. He is being held in lieu of $10,500 bail.

Kraus said because there were no injuries or fatalities, it isn't mandatory that the trooper be removed from duty. He would not release the trooper's name.

"We are still investigating to make sure everyone followed policy and procedures," Kraus said of the review being conducted by the office of professional compliance. "It will be determined what we do from there."

TOKYO - -- Toyota Motor Corp. and Fujitsu Ten Ltd., a major manufacturer of automobile accessories, will jointly develop an automatic warning system for hybrid and electric vehicles to warn pedestrians of their approach, sources say.

Electric vehicles and some hybrids are very quiet when driven at low speeds and could endanger pedestrians who might not hear them approaching.

Other automakers are likely to follow suit to address the problem.

The two companies are planning to conduct an experiment soon on single-seat electric vehicles used in the lobby of Chubu Airport, just outside of Nagoya in central Japan.

The experiment will test various sounds to warn pedestrians that a vehicle is approaching to find "the right tune at the right volume so people are alerted but" aren't annoyed, an official close to the development team said.

The two companies also will look into developing a system that, by synchronizing with obstacle-detection radar, would change the alarm's tune and volume based on such factors as its distance from pedestrians, crowd density and ambient noise.

The companies plan to collect the data by July 2010 and then put any technology into production.

Electric vehicles and some hybrids can run on their electric motors alone when starting or at low speeds, so there's no engine noise.

According to a study by the National Traffic Safety and Environment Laboratory on the difference in noise levels between hybrid and gasoline-powered vehicles, the difference is greater when the vehicles are running at 10 mph or slower.

The study also found that, when slowing to a stop, a gas-powered vehicle puts out about 50 decibels of noise, which is as loud as the sound coming from an average high-rise apartment building in the daytime. However, a hybrid-engine vehicle under the same conditions puts out 30 decibels or less, which is close to that of leaves rustling.

The Construction and Transport Ministry also has convened a committee of specialists, industry groups and organizations for the visually impaired to work on a way to make the electrics louder.

Todays vehicle/transportation do harm us as humanbeing......

As many car makers are coming out with electric and hybrid vehicle options that appeal to the average driver, there’s hope that more of these alternative fuel options will be seen on the streets of North America and worldwide. However, with so many service vehicles on the street still contributing to carbon emissions, the impact of regular drivers making the change to electric vehicles just might not be as beneficial to the carbon footprint if these fleet vehicles do not get on board. Stepping up to the plate and the challenge, and pledging to plug into the electric alternative are the government and other private businesses who have voiced intent to purchase electric vehicles my makers like Ford over the next few years.

The United States Postal Service has already ordered 165 hybrid Chryser Town & Country Minivans, a plug-in model which will be available for purchase by the general public next year. The USPS has used pilot electric vehicles in their fleet for years, so it comes as no surprise that they would be among the first service vehicles to adopt the alternative fuel technology. Ford also claims to be taking orders from government sectors and private companies for their line of electric vehicles which will be available, created for them by Smith Electric Vehicles.

Eaton is another alternative energy provider that has been approached by other fleet vehicles looking to get a green upgrade to more environmentally friendly fuel alternatives. Fedex is one of the big private companies looking to make this change, and they’ve already deployed more than 100 hybrid-electric vehicles in New York alone, which will reduce not only their fuel costs but their carbon footprint as well.

As the government and various private sector businesses set an example through their use of alternative vehicle options, their mainstream acceptance will become more positively viewed, opening the doors for other businesses and private vehicle owners to make their own eco-friendly changes.

Oct. 10 (Bloomberg) -- China’s Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. agreed to buy the Hummer brand from General Motors Corp., adding sport-utility vehicles to a product lineup that includes bridge parts and construction equipment.

Tengzhong will have an 80 percent stake through an investment group with entrepreneur Suolang Duoji, who will hold the rest, according to a statement on GM’s Web site. The sale is worth $150 million, people familiar with the deal said Oct. 8, about 70 percent less than GM valued it in court.

Acquiring Hummer propels Chengdu, China-based Tengzhong, a privately owned industrial manufacturer, into the passenger- vehicle industry. Chief Executive Officer Yang Yi said he wants to grow the business beyond the U.S. market, which accounts for about two-thirds of the brand’s sales.

“We are really looking to expand our global reach to tackle some of the high-growth markets, particularly the China market, in which we expect to enjoy explosive growth,” Yang said yesterday through a translator in an interview.

Disposing of Hummer is a victory for GM in its post- bankruptcy restructuring after the sale of the Saturn unit to Penske Automotive Group Inc. fell through last week. GM is shutting Saturn and Pontiac and is close to a deal with Sweden’s Koenigsegg Group to acquire the Saab brand.

Hummer plans to resume exports to China, Europe, the Middle East and Russia, CEO Jim Taylor said in an interview. It will probably take five to six months to adapt vehicles to Chinese regulations before Hummer can export in any significant numbers, Taylor said.

“Tengzhong may not get a deal as good it appears to be, as there are a lot of questions to be answered, for instance, we don’t know much Tengzhong needs to pay for the use of Hummer’s manufacturing technology and what other are strings attached,” said Zhang Xin, a Beijing-based analyst at Guotai Junan Securities Ltd. “Then there’s the regulatory hurdle of getting the license to import and sell the car in China.”

Staying in Michigan

Hummer will remain based in southeastern Michigan, starting with about 100 to 150 people, Taylor said. The next step would be to hire about 200 engineers, he said. The company plans to continue contracting with GM for vehicle production from plants in Mishawaka, Indiana, and Shreveport, Louisiana, for two to three years, Taylor said.

Tengzhong and Hummer executives will meet in China next week to determine product, manufacturing and expansion plans, Taylor said. The brand has been profitable, Taylor said, and he expects it to continue to make money.

Hummer plans to ramp up exports before exploring assembly in China, pending the appropriate regulatory approvals, Taylor said. He expects Hummer to follow the typical pattern of importing to China in small numbers, then send almost fully assembled vehicles for final assembly in the country, then send kits for assembly and finally produce most of the car in China.

“It will be a gradual process,” Taylor said. “It takes three to four years to accommodate.”

Protecting Jobs

Rising gasoline prices helped erase U.S. demand for the full-size SUVs made by Hummer, whose value Detroit-based GM had projected at $500 million in court documents earlier this year. GM left Chapter 11 on July 10 and is keeping its Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC brands in the U.S.

Tengzhong and GM had said the accord would protect more than 3,000 U.S. corporate, manufacturing and dealership jobs. The sale agreement caps talks that Tengzhong had disclosed in June.

Hummer’s dealer accords and senior management team will be taken over by Tengzhong, the maker of special-use vehicles, structural parts for highways and bridges, and construction machinery.

Tengzhong plans to apply for Chinese regulatory approval once a binding agreement with GM is made, said a person familiar with the matter.

Duoji, Tengzhong’s investment partner, has holdings that include Hong Kong-based Lumena Resources Corp., in which he holds a 38 percent stake, according to Bloomberg Data.

Credit Suisse is the financial adviser and Shearman & Sterling LLP is international legal counsel to Tengzhong. Citigroup Inc. is advising GM.

Declining Demand

GM bought the license for the Hummer brand from AM General in 1999 and started selling the $140,000 H1, a 7,600-pound (3,400-kilogram) SUV patterned after the all-terrain military vehicle popularized for road use by actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is now California’s governor.

H1 production ended in 2006, when Hummer’s U.S. deliveries peaked at 71,524, according to Autodata Corp. U.S. sales of the SUVs fell 51 percent in 2008, when retail gasoline reached a record $4.11 a gallon, and 63 percent this year through September. The cheapest model, the H3, starts at about $31,000.

A liter of regular gasoline costs 5.88 yuan (86 U.S. cents) in Beijing, compared with 65 U.S. cents in the U.S.

Nissan’s electric vehicle tilts into corners
ATSUGI, Japan — Nissan’s Land Glider electric vehicle tilts from side to side, sashaying into curves by up to a 17-degree angle, as though showing off in a fashion statement that it’s zero-emissions.
The wheel segments of the car can move separately from the cabin, allowing the car, still an experimental concept model, to sway and swerve, almost like a motorcycle.
Nissan Motor Co. project design director Takashi Nakjima says Land Glider is designed to be a “personal city commuter.”
In a demonstration for reporters, the car glided around on a test course at Nissan’s design center, outside Tokyo, leaning slowly to one side, and then the other, as it turned tight corners.
Just 110 centimeters (43 inches) wide, Land Glider has sensors to calculate speed and level of lean required for corners, and can maneuver through narrow streets and fit into tight parking spaces, according to Yokohama-based Nissan.
People aboard sit in a line, one behind the other, not next to each other as in traditional two-seaters.
Reporters got a preview look of the “concept model” but no test drive, of the Land Glider. There are no immediate plans for commercial production.
It will have its world premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show, opening to media Oct. 21, two days before its formal opening. The show runs through Nov. 4 in the Tokyo suburb of Chiba.
Japanese rivals Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. are also showing nifty electric vehicles at the show.
Toyota’s FT-EV II has a roomy cube design, a relatively conventional look for electric cars. But Honda’s EV-N is small and cute with an intentionally old-fashioned car shape.
“We feel exploratory efforts in electric vehicles have entered a new stage” with Land Glider, Nakajima said.
Japanese automakers say electric vehicles will largely be used initially for limited range, commuter travel.
Nissan is among the first to offer an electric vehicle, set to go on sale in Japan, the U.S. and Europe next year — the rather regular-looking Leaf.

Made of a flexible nylon net and a drum rotor, the hi-tech shopping cart is capable of changing the internal volume of the basket according to the needs of the customer. Users can get actual information about the goods and the hypermarket with the help of the cart.
The bottom of the basket gradually falls when you put goods in it, and comes up when you take them out. In this way you don’t need to bend down to take out your purchases. The control panel can transform itself to be comfortable for user with any height. The cart is equipped with a navigation system for quick search, and there is a bar-code scanner. The Unit has an electric motor, which charges on parking and has a socket for emergency charging. Shopping with the Unit shopping cart is no longer a tedious task in the hypermarkets.

Shopping in a hypermarket often become a tedious task, as most of the visitors struggle to find the goods and have to move across the huge mart in search of a particular product. Providing a solution, Russian designer Liubov Kurzanova has devised a hypermarket vehicle dubbed “UNIT” that makes acquisition of goods more comfortable and joyful for the customers. Made of a flexible nylon net and a drum rotor, the hi-tech shopping cart is capable of changing the internal volume of the basket according to the needs of the customer. Users can get actual information about the goods and the hypermarket with the help of the cart.
The bottom of the basket gradually falls when you put goods in it, and comes up when you take them out. In this way you don’t need to bend down to take out your purchases. The control panel can transform itself to be comfortable for user with any height. The cart is equipped with a navigation system for quick search, and there is a bar-code scanner. The Unit has an electric motor, which charges on parking and has a socket for emergency charging. Shopping with the Unit shopping cart is no longer a tedious task in the hypermarkets.
