It’s been more then three month since I wrote my last post, but it feels like it’s been more then a year.

Having bucket load of content is good for driving traffic to your blog or content sites. But how to make your content stand out in millions of other so that your visitor cant help but read your content is equally important. Writing Attractive and Meaningful title: Your Article title works as 1^st impression on your potential reader. Because Search Engines tend to include topic and article titles in search result. Font: Lots of new bloggers are tempted to use non standard fonts to make their blog look different. Of course their blog look different. The new player to join the Bandwagon of Micro Blogging is *Plurk* this themed IM (Instant Messaging) Founded by Alvin Woon and his other 6 mates the site officially launched on January 23 2008. This crazy named site was labeled as Twitter clone soon after its launch

Is Plurk is really a Twitter Clone?

Many say Plurk is Twitter clone, I say Plurk is innovative and it has some feature that no other Micro Blogging site has. The most obvious unique feature is the timeline. It may keep u away at first. As it did to some, but many will like this unique feature. If u don’t like it at 1st I would suggest u to stick around for some time. Explore its options follow others I am sure u will like it. Auto-updating of timeline and notification of new plurk or response on plurk is something u will find cool. Another feature that Plurk has but the others don’t is the ability to prefix your Plurk with moods or actions, such as “hates, loves, shares, will,” etc.

The User Interface and Experience

Unlike any other Micro Blogging site signing up and using Plurk realy simple and it takes 1/3 of Wordpress’s famous 5 minute installation. And once you start using it, some very interesting differences compare to other lifestreaming services start to become obvious. 1st and the most obvious differences u will notice is User Interface which is brilliant and cool. Plurk's use of the unconventional horizontally scrolling time-line is really smart.

Anyone who frequently grieves over Twitter's lack of threading and has found some comfort in FriendFeed, is going to love the comment threading method on Plurk. When I first read Darren Rowse’s Plurk post I clicked the just out curiosity ( I personally don’t like Social networking & Micro Blogging sites) as soon as I land on my timeline page after signup I asked my self “ Where the hell have u came? “ what are all this floating faces with some stupid messages. But after using it for some time and checking all the features and functions I was thoroughly impressed with the concept of Plurk . I think Plurk is an amazing advancement over the previous generation of Micro Blogging

Usefull and unique Content – U might think why this idiot blogger remind this over and over again m not a fith greader who don’t know all this so will keep it brief. Unless you have ‘good useful quality ’ content you’re not likely to build a readership. What is the definition of good content - start by thinking about it in terms of Good Content and I think you’ll be on the right track. Other words that come to mind when it comes to good content might be ‘fresh’, ‘variety’, ‘up to date’ and ‘well written’.

Build your network - One of the keystones of blogging is that they are linked. Perhaps the complex web of links and associations was one of the first things attracted all of us to blogging and. involve yourself in the linking to other blogs and you’ll find that many benefits come out of it. For a start you’ll be engage in discussions, you’ll be getting the attention of others bloggers and your readers will appreciate that you’re interested in helping them find the best content out there.

Of course you don’t want to be linking to any random post you find in blogsphere - be selective and link to good quality content blog that is relevant to your niche topic and have reasonable page rank. As you involve in linking you’ll find that other blogger linking you back (assuming you have something worthwhile to say yourself) and your traffic graph reach new high - both from other sites links and as a result of your improved search engine ranking.

Get Links from other Bloggers – I know some one of u might say - ‘Easier said than done kid!’ yeah its true but not entirely impossible - if you’re intelligent, unique, helpful and polite there are ways of getting quality inbound links

Join other blog’s conversation – Don’t spend your free time following peoples on twitter and stumbling what ever shit u found on WWW. Use it well, surf other quality blogs in your niche. Leave your blog URL w hen you leave a comment. Bloggers are curious to know like to who is reading their blog and will come sniffing your URL on your . Don’t comment just for the sake of it. If someone leaves me a ‘hi Sam’ comment or is obviously spamming my blog I will not visit him and delete the comment. Make genuine comments Just make sure that you are adding to the discussion instead of purely promoting yourself .You might make a good friend in the development and in the long run will find the flow on effect of this is more interest in you and your own blog.

Post regularly - With the arrival Feed readers & news aggregators it became more easer and convenient to notified people about your new post in real time. It has been observed by many bloggers that when they publish a new post their stats nearly always go up slightly just afterwards as those feed subscribers log in to have a quick look at new updates. This works a lot better on some blogs than others (some topics seem to attract more RSS subscribers than others do). Another side benefit of frequent posting is that search engines like it and many believe that the more you post the more often SE’s will send their spiders out to index your blog. Ability to provide relevant information to it’s visitors will make a site super successful. This isn't as easy at it sounds, but it is very important to the success of a website. If a visitor arrived on your site don’t get the information they wont, they will hit the back button without second thought

Let's take an example in the SEO niche.

You might have a page about "SEO".

That's great, but what if someone is looking for free SEO strategy, and they arrive at your page which basically describes paid SEO, or SEO tips that is beneficial to a blog publisher only? Would they be targeted? Would they likely stay on your site, and follow your call to action (whether it is clicking an affiliate link, or clicking an Adsense ad)? Probably not. The information is not targeted enough for that visitor.

If you created a page that was targeted to that visitor, then there is a good chance they would at least read your page, and follow your call to action. The more targeted the information, the better your conversion rates.

In this example, writing an article on Free SEO strategies would be the way to go. However, the big problem is actually finding these specific phrases in the first place.

This type of phrase is often called the long-tail. They tend to have less competition, and fewer searches, but they are vital to the success of a site, and allow you to cater for a wider audience, providing highly relevant information to each visitor.

One way to find these long-tail keywords is to look through your log files. Look for the phrases that people use to find your pages, and then create content that is more targeted to their requests.

Do-Follow Social Bookmarking Sites That Actually Work

Link Backs are great way to increase your page rank and search engine listing. One strategy to gain these backlinks is to bookmark your content in social marking sites that do not use the ‘nofollow’ tag. Generally speaking, the higher the PageRank (PR) of the site, the better.

Why Use Social Bookmarking?

Every time you add a bookmark to one of your pages in one of these sites you create a backlink. If you bookmark every piece of content you create in all of these sites you can build a lot backlinks over time.

For the purposes of backlinks, you want to make sure that the bookmarking sites provide a real, do-follow link. This rules out the biggest of the bunch - Delicious as it is no-follow. I found lots of big no-follow sites and I also found several that don’t provide real backlinks - they use their own form of dynamic link which does not count as a backlink.

One other thing to be aware of is that even though these are your personal bookmarks, you need to ensure that they are public - that way other people (Google really) can find them. But be careful, some bookmarking sites such as Connotea have a specific niche and probably wont appreciate your toenail clipping bookmarks.

Some Notable Additions

There are some bookmarking sites that are either nofollow or they use a dynamic link structure. However, even a nofollow link can be valuable to some extent because Google is not the only search engine and there is also the issue of human readers. In the case of particularly big sites such as Delicious, those bookmarks often get copied to many other places so one nofollow link in delicious could actually result in about a dozen links elsewhere though this tends to happen only with popular links.

In the next section of this post I point you towards several services that allow you to bookmark at many sites all in one go. Under these circumstances adding your links to a few extra sites can take just a few seconds more so for that reason I have also listed below a few extra bookmarking sites that don’t offer real dofollow backlinks but are very high profile and worth using under those circumstances:

SocialMarker is a pretty useful web application that allows you to type in the details (name, url, tags, description) etc just ones and then it brings up the submission pages for each site you have selected and you just click through them very quickly.

Most ff the sites I mention in the list are supported by Social Marker and it is regularly updated. It’s not without it’s flaws however - sometimes it misses out information and you’ll find a submission page without tags for example so do have a good over what you are submitting for each site.

One Way Links By Pinging

Pinging is an automatic service of announcicng the update of your blog/content. It is like a short massage to ping server notifying that the blog has been updated in recent time.

What is a ping server?
A ping server is a web-based service that accepts messages in the XML-RPC format. It uses the information in these XML-RPC messages to publish a list of blogs which have updated content. Some of these ping servers run their own blog search engines, and some propagate the information to a number of other ping servers and search engines.

How does pinging work?
Many blog publishing platforms, such as Wordpress, have a built-in pinging tool. In the case of Wordpress, pinging is turned on by default and pings go out to one ping server which updates several search engines.

You can also notify a ping server that you have updated content manually by going to their website and submitting your blog’s name and URL.

One popular ping server is PingOMatic, found at http://pingomatic.com/. When your blog pings PingOMatic it then notifies a number of search engines that your blog has been updated. Many of these search engines also have their own ping server as well.

These search engines can then update their listings with new content almost instantly. This of course will give you one-way backlinks to your blog from these search engines, many of which have a high Google PageRank.

4 things you should know about pinging

1. Only ping when you have updated content. Otherwise, your site might be blacklisted as a spam blog, also known as a splog.

2. If you tend to post to your blog and then re-write the post frequently you might want to make sure you only ping when you actually post new content, not on updates. If you are using Wordpress there are a few plugins that make sure that pings are only sent when a post is created.

3. It’s a good idea to ping several ping services, especially the ones that notify several search engines. Don’t overdo it though. Make sure that if you are pinging a niche search engine that your blog falls into the relevant niche.

4. Make sure that if a search engine is notified by a ping server you are already using that you don’t add that search engines own ping service to your list of servers to ping. Because blog spammers have abused ping servers if you are pinging a search engine multiple times your site might end up being blacklisted, and not appear in the search engines at all.

Maximize Your feed subscriber counts

There are a few basic and important things that make a the big blogs stand out, statistic wise, from all the rest. These are traffic, inbound links, conversions and of course the number of people subscribed to its RSS feed. A blog with let’s say 2000+ readers is a sign that the respective blog is a well established one, with regular readers and is regarded as a authority. It is very important to not underestimated the importance of the feedcount. To help you all increase your feed I’ve devised 9 step ultimate guide that are sure to boost your RSS numbers no matter what, from a few tens of subscribers up to a few hundred.

1. Don’t display your subscriber numbers if they’re too low. A common mistake blogging beginners make is displaying they feedburner count when at really low rates. You have to understand that humans most of time work under the ‘flock’ principle, we’re all basically sheep , so when ever you see a small community you don’t really have any desire to join it. Same things apply for RSS counts as well, if you see “3 readers” in the chicklet you will most certainly feel this isn’t a active community and might not want to subscribe to the respective feed. At what time do I recommend displaying the feedcount? I would say 50-100 is a decent number, but i would go as far as 200.

2. Make subscribing as easy as possible. It is extremely important to highlight various subscription methods to the user; what I recommend is you use the standard RSS icon and make sure it stands out, also add some a few addition popular subscribing methods like bloglines, Google reader, MyYahoo, netvibes etc.

3. Inform people what RSS is. A lot of internet users on the web don’t know what RSS is and how to subscribe to a website. It’s very important you make a page on your blog dedicated to informing and schooling users on what RSS is and how to use it. You can see a sample on how to achieve that at my Subscribe landing page.

4. Ask people to subscribe to your feed. You know how sometimes kinds words or a simple “please” can do wonders? It works for blogs too, just add a little strip of text at the end of your post saying “If your enjoyed this post, then might consider subscribing to my RSS feed.” If you’re a first time visitor to this then you may have noticed the cool square at the beginning of the post.

5. Divert your feed. If you didn’t know it already it’s possible to direct your subscribers that receive feeds from “yoursitename.com/feed” to your feedburner account. Thus your feed count will considerably grow and you can be rest assured that all your subscriber are accounted for. You can do this with a handy plugin called Feedsmith, supplied by the lovely people from feedburner.

6. Provide full feeds. If you using Wordpress 2.0+ then you know that your feeds are partially displayed by default, so that users if they want to read the whole post have to visit your blog. This is a major drawback, it’s very important to provide full feeds so that you have a consistent large readership. To display full feeds I use and recommend Cave Monkey’s Full Text Feed, a very handy pluging and requires only uploading and activation, nothing else.

8. Offer a e-mail subscribing option. A lot of people don’t like to use RSS readers, so for that particular category of people you should provide a e-mail subscription service. Feedburner has such a service incorporated by default, you just have to login to you control panel and activate it. Optionally you can display a e-mail subscribing form.

9. Reward your subscribers. An other method that could help your feed count boom is offering your readers a incentive for subscribing, preferably a freebie, whether it’s a free e-book or, as it was the case of very successful campaign a friend of mine launch, giving out free pens with your logo for subscribers. Be creative and think of cheap, but fun rewards.

John Chow vs. Google what went wrong

It looks like Google folks haven’t been too happy with John Chow’s link building strategy. Search Google with “Jhon Chow” and u will get the proof of that

It is amusing to note that Jhon’s own rank dose not rank 3-4 for surch result of his own name. It makes sense Google is directing people to an article about why he is being punished that’s to say because of his unethical link back strategies. If you look at Google's Webmaster Guidelines, you will note the following:

Some SEOs and webmasters engage in the practice of buying and selling links, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. Buying links in order to improve a site's ranking is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results.

John Chow started a link exchange campaign back in 2006, in which he would give a link back for every review of his blog when the text anchor 'make money online' was used. John now has over 870 links from various sites as a direct result of this campaign. This has proved to be very successful for John, because since inception of the link campaign his blog income has grown from $2790.05 in December of 2006 to $12,569.61 in June of 2007, an increase in revenue of $9,779.56.

However the remarkable link back campaign which gave John chow a super star blogger status have come at a high price. suddenly John Chow’s blog “dissapeared” from Google search results. With further investigation, you’ll find out that his blog is still cached but it seems like it’s been manually punished by Google. He’s 41st search result for the term “John Chow” and 47th for the “make money online” (his primary keyword). Moreover, John got banned at Digg and his blog was attacked by a SEO hacker at the same time.

While John was trying to figure out what happened, others have been fast to profit from his misfortune. Especially the www.johncow.com which has taken the first search result for the “John Chow” and managed to get very popular in a short time period.

When asked what he thought of Google dropping him so far, and why he thought Technorati did not show him in the top 100. He had this to say,

"Google dropping me down in the search result is disappointing. However, that's the way it goes sometimes. You can cry about it or you can continue to build. I have always advised readers to never put all their eggs in Google's basket and this is a good example why. If all my blog traffic came from Google, my blog would be dead right now.

I have no doubt that Google will eventually rank me back higher. Search engine follows people and when people visit a site without the help of a search engine, it gets their attention. Google's job is to give the most relevant search results. Right now, they're not doing that with the search term John Chow and that makes them look bad.

Technorati seems to hand select blogs for inclusion in the Top 100. How they select who gets in and who is not, nobody by Technorati knows. It doesn't effect me financially by not being in the official Top 100 list. As long as they ranked me correctly, I'm fine with that."
