Despite this, too many of us don’t drink enough water on a daily basis. By depriving ourselves of the world’s most natural resource, we are continuously damaging our bodies. If you experience any of the following, you can improve your situation by starting with a glass of H2O. 1. Your Mouth is Dry This seems pretty obvious, but the ramifications might not be so. Of course, any time you feel that sticky, nasty feeling in your mouth, you’d obviously reach for some sort of liquid. But sugary drinks are only a temporary solution to a larger problem. Drinking water lubricates the mucus membranes in your mouth and throat, which will continue to keep your mouth moist with saliva long after that first sip. 2. Your Skin is Dry Your skin is your body’s largest organ, so of course it needs to stay hydrated. In fact, dry skin is one of the earliest signs of full-on dehydration, which can lead to much larger problems. A lack of water means a lack of sweat, which leads to a body’s inability to wash away excess dirt and oil accumulated throughout the day. Commercial banks in Nigeria have commenced laying off some of their staff, following the federal government directive to ministries and agencies for a Treasury Single Account. Nigerian commercial banks, it was learnt, can no longer afford to keep their staff, as ministries and agencies of government have commenced withdrawal of their deposits in commercial banks, in compliance with federal government directive. A source who is a top management staff of one of the first generation banks told leadership Weekend on condition of anonymity that only two days ago, his bank laid off one thousand staff nationwide adding that the mostly affected in the downsizing exercise are desk officers. The source told our correspondent that, closure of government accounts with commercial banks has left the banks with no other option than to reduce its work force. It would be recalled that the banking sector is the highest employer of Labour in Nigeria. The source expressed concerns, that TSA policy, although designed to ensure accountability and transparency, it is equally going to ground a lot of the commercial banks. He said, “As I speak with you now, about one thousand of our staff are already on their way out, because we can no longer accommodate them, but what we have done is to lay off more of the desk officers”. Asked why the attention is on desk officers, the source said, “If you lay off those who go out to look for deposits you will worsen the situation, so we have to look at the survival of the bank first, the consequence of allowing desk officers to stay and sacking those who bring deposits will be higher, so we took the safer option of letting desk officers go”. “The truth of the matter is that some of these deposits, especially fixed deposits help the banks a lot, now, there is directive that government funds be withdrawn, on one hand it will ensure accountability, but on the other hand the banks will also have to reduce their staff strength or be ready to recapitalise. Another source told our correspondent that about 1,500 staff of a new generation bank were also laid off yesterday for the same reasons. The source stated further that most of the staff laid off were those on temporary appointments. He said, “The problem is that, if you lay off permanent staff at once, you also have to pay them all their entitlements otherwise they will take you to court. Yes, majority of the people we truly do not need are unfortunately the permanent staff, but because of the confusion and litigation that will follow, we decided to relief those with temporary appointments. It is a painful decision, but we have to do it in other to save the banks. “We have prepared their disengagement letters and most of them will be communicated next week. I tell you, not only here, all the banks will follow this line. That is the situation”. Couples who send each other sexually suggestive or explicit images by phone, commonly known as "sexting," have better sex, according to a study presented to a psychology convention in Toronto.

The practice is often portrayed as risky, yet American researchers found it is widespread and could actually help couples improve communication and increase intimacy.

"These findings show a robust relationship between sexting and sexual and relationship satisfaction," said Emily Stasko of Philadelphia's Drexel University.

She presented the results of an online survey of 870 Americans aged 18 to 82 at the American Psychological Association's 123rd Annual Convention in Toronto on Saturday.

More than eight out of 10 respondents said they have sexted. Three-quarters of them sent images to a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife, and associated sexting with better relationship satisfaction.

That increased gratification, however, did not carry over to singles surveyed, nor to respondents who said they were in a "very committed" relation.

Despite its potential to enhance communication between partners, past studies - and recent headlines - have focused almost exclusively on negative outcomes from sexting.

Some of the best known examples include news last year about phone hacks that led to the leak of nude photos of celebrities including actress Jennifer Lawrence, pop icon Rihanna and top model Kate Upton.

In another notorious sexting case, US lawmaker Anthony Weiner quit the House of Representatives after confessing that he used social media to send sexually explicit pictures of himself to a number of women.

But such highly publicised negative outcomes said Stasko, fail to take into account the upside of sexting, which, when used by a loving couple, can increase the "potential positive effects of open sexual communication with a partner."

Whether it is wine tasting out in the country, a glass of red wine by the fire or just a means of unwinding each day after work, many of us thoroughly enjoy drinking wine. But for some, that glass of wine causes strange allergic symptoms that could indicate a wine intolerance.

Wine intolerance is estimated to affect 8% of people worldwide. The term "wine intolerance", however is a blanket term as there are a number of different compounds in wines that can trigger allergic symptoms. Such compounds include:

Sulphite sensitivity

Of that 8%, it is estimated that 1% suffer from an allergy to sulfites in the wine. Sulfites are sulfur-containing substances that occur naturally in wine but are also added by winemakers to prevent spoiling. Allergic symptoms usually occur in those with another underlying condition such as asthma or hay fever.

The majority of those with a sulphite sensitivity will not experience severe allergic reactions, however wheezing, coughing and chest tightness are believed to affect 5-10% of those who also suffer from asthma, the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) explains.

Common symptoms of a sulphur sensitivity include:

- Wheezing

- Tight chest

- Coughing

Sulphites are also present in a number of other food substances such as pickled foods, vinegar, beer and cider, gravy and dried fruits, Allergy UK indicates. It can also be found as a preservative in certain medications and cosmetics.

Histamine sensitivity

There is also research to suggest that histamines in wine could trigger allergic symptoms. Histamines are part of the body's immune response and cause inflammation. They also occur in naturally-fermented products such as wine.

According to an article by Allergy UK, an enzyme called diamine oxidase is responsible for breaking down histamines in the body. Some people have lower levels of diamine oxide, which means that they have a reduced ability lower the level of histamines in the body and are therefore more at risk of allergic symptoms.

Common symptoms include:

- Headaches

- Rashes

- Itching

- Wheezing

- Abdominal pain

Other food substances that are high in histamines include beer and ciders, tofu, parmesan and other cheeses, processed meats and cocoa.

Glycoprotein sensitivity

Additional research suggests that glycoproteins — proteins coated with sugars produced naturally as grapes ferment — may be a culprit.

However, scientists knew little about the structure and function of these substances in wine.In a recent study published in the Journal of Proteome Research researchers discovered 28 different glycoproteins, some of which were identified for the first time. An analysis revealed that some of these glycoproteins had very similar structures to other known allergens such as the proteins found in latex and ragweed.

A lot more research is needed into glycoproteins and whether or not they cause allergic symptoms.

How to avoid unpleasant reactions

Although in the majority of cases, sensitivity to wine is not serious, some may wish to avoid it to reduce allergic symptoms.

For those with histamine sensitivities, avoiding foods with high levels of histamines will assist in preventing reactions.

For those with sulphite sensitivities, a similar approach can be taken to avoid high-sulphite foods. For those who enjoy their wine too much to give up entirely, Wine Folly suggests a number of approaches that can be attempted:

- Choose red wine over white wine. Wines that are stronger in colour usually have lower levels of sulphites than clearer white wines

- Avoid less acidic wines as these have higher levels of sulphites than more acidic alternatives

- Select dry wines with lower sugar content as these require less sulphites to be added

- Go organic. Most organic wines do not have additional sulphites added during production and therefore have lower sulphite levels.

- Look at the labels - certain wines now have a low-sulphite label on their bottle which will be your best option if you don't know how to differentiate between wines that are high or low in sugar or acidity

It should not take 84 attempts to hit a target. And yet, that’s exactly what happened last Friday when NYPD officers got in a gun fight with an attempted murder suspect in Bushwick. As the Huffington Post reports, out of the 84 shots fired at the man, only one actually hit him. Early that morning, 27-year-old Jerrol Harris ran from the cops after attempting to steal a Brooklyn man’s car and shooting him in the arm. Police chased Harris who fired at them with a black .40-caliber Taurus Millennium pistol, according to The New York Times. After 84 shots fired by six different police officers, Harris was finally struck in the calf and brought down. Harris has 12 prior arrests, including four robberies and gun possession. He’s facing several counts of first-degree and second-degree attempted murder, as well as other felony charges. Meanwhile, the NYPD should consider beefing up their target practice lessons.

Pope Francis called on Sunday on every European parish and religious community to take in one migrant family each in a gesture of solidarity expected to start in the tiny Vatican state where he lives.

“I appeal to the parishes, the religious communities, the monasteries and sanctuaries of all Europe to take in one family of refugees,” Reuters quoted the Pope as saying after his Sunday address in the Vatican.

His call goes out to tens of thousands of Catholic parishes in Europe as the number of refugees arriving over land through the Balkans and across the Mediterranean to Italy and Greece hits record levels.

There are more than 25,000 parishes in Italy alone, and more than 12,000 in Germany, where many of the Syrians fleeing civil war and people trying to escape poverty and hardship in other countries say they want to end up.

The crowd in St. Peter’s Square applauded as the pontiff, himself the grandson of Italian emigrants to Argentina, said: “Every parish, every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary of Europe, take in one family.”

The Vatican’s two parishes will take in a family of refugees each in the coming days, said Francis, whose first trip after his election was to the Italian island of Lampedusa, halfway between Sicily and Tunisia, where many migrants arrive by boat.

The Italian coast guard said on Saturday it had coordinated the rescue of 329 migrants who made distress calls from their rubber boats.

Francis said taking in migrant families was a “concrete gesture” to prepare for the extraordinary Holy Year on the theme of mercy which is due to begin on December 8.

For four days last week, 70 secondary school pupils from Lagos, Anambra, and Rivers states deliberated on issues of international importance at the maiden conference of The African FutureTrust Model United Nations (TAFMUN), a simulation of the UN General Assembly.

Acting as representatives of various country members of the UN, they discussed and negotiated solutions to their ‘countries’ problems during the event holding at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Convener of the conference and founder, FutureTrust Initiative for Capacity Building (FTI), Dr Maureen Egbuche, said the participants, as a result of researches done on their countries and presentations and debates they made at the conference, would gain soft skills not taught in schools which would help them in future.

“The ultimate aim is to prepare these children for the future. Today we are teaching critical thinking; negotiation skills. In participating in this conference, they take away these skills without even knowing it. Here you are representing a country that is not your native country. But after your research, you are suddenly at home discussing issues, being quite passionate about it, remaining in character of the country you have been assigned. And then you have to listen to views that may be opposing to what you generally believe in. But the thing is that at the last day of the conference all of you would have come up with solutions that are win-win for everybody,” she said.

The teenagers’deliberation was coordinated by a conference staff made up of university undergraduates who had participated in similar conferences in the past.

Secretary-General of TAFMUN 2015, Eugene Uwiringiyimana, who read the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon’s goodwill message at the opening of the conference, is a student of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola.

Chisom Ogbummuo, a 200-Level student of Political Science at the University of Lagos, acted as the Under-Secretary-General (Protocol).

Of the value of the conference to the pupils, Chisom said: “It will go a long way for them. At present, I work for the UN and it is because I started activities related to this kind of conference as a student of Holy Child College,” she said.

A teacher from the Federal Science and Technical (FSTC), Yaba, Mrs Adebanke Akano, who prepared her 24 delegates for the conference, said the conference would prepare participants to have a say in their future.

In his message, Ban Ki-Moon hoped that the conference would influence the participants to support good international causes.

“Through your participation in this Model United Nations, you demonstrate your concern for peace, justice, human rights and human dignity. I hope this conference will inspire you to be a lifelong global citizen who advances these common goals,” he said.

In her keynote address, former Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi, who was represented by the former Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Education, Dr Richard Ofuru, counseled the participants to form Model UN clubs back in their schools to continue to harness the skills they learn. She recalled with pride how some pupils sponsored by the Rivers State Government to New York for the UN Youth conference returned with prizes.

Dr Egbuche said 70 participants were chosen in recognition of the 70th anniversary of the UN this year.

They were selected from the Federal Government Girls’ College, Onitsha; Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba; Atlantic Hall, Lagos; and Queen’s College, Lagos.

Other are: Archdeacon Brown Education Centre, Port Harcourt; Community Secondary School Alode Eleme; Community Secondary School, Amadi Ama; and Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School, Port Harcourt.

TANZANIA’S Taifa Stars produced a stunning second half performance but failed to do enough to stun three-time African champions, Nigeria on match day two of 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying.

Yesterday’s game at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam which finished 0-0 was Sunday Oliseh’s first after he replaced former coach, Stephen Keshi and he opted to hand 29-year-old goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme his competitive debut in place of Vincent Enyeama who asked to be excused from the tie following the death of his mother.

It turned out to be a master stroke as the Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper made no less than six stunning saves to prevent the Eagles from suffering a humiliating defeat.

FSV Mainz defender, Leon Balogun failed to recover from an ankle injury and was subsequently replaced by Solomon Kwambe.

William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo and Kingsley Madu were the other defenders handed starts against the Taifa Stars.

Obiora Nwankwo started ahead of the back four while Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon and Emmanuel Emenike started in more advanced positions ahead of midfielders, Izunna Uzochukwu and Lukman Haruna.

Nigeria threatened early on through Simon on the left but he was fouled as he raced past a defender and honed in on goal. He took the subsequent free kick himself but Emenike headed wildly from four yards.

The hosts then took control and Carl Ikeme had to be at his brilliant best in the 13th and 22nd minutes to keep the score line even.

His first save off an Mbwana Samata effort was particularly impressive as the Taifa Stars continued to show they were anything but intimidated by the storied credentials of their opponents.

The Super Eagles looked sluggish and lacking in co-ordination and Oliseh responded by substituting Haruna after just 35 minutes with striker, Sylvester Igboun taking the Anzhi man’s place and earning his debut as a result.

The hosts however continued to create the more dangerous openings with TP Mazembe man, Thomas Ulimwengu particularly outstanding.

Ahmed Musa’s free kick from range in the 24th minute represented Nigeria’s only effort on target in the half and the visitors knew they were lucky to still be on level terms at the break.

The Super Eagles started on the front foot in the second half and Emenike threatened from range in the 48th minute.

Musa’s pace continued to cause the hosts problems down the right hand channel and he burst through on 57 minutes only to be let down by an atrocious final touch.

Tanzania should have scored on the hour but Ikeme produced a save that defied logic to deny Ulimwengu from point blank range.

Oliseh responded by throwing on Werder Bremen attacker, Anthony Ujah for the tiring Emenike as Nigeria looked to rev the engine. It was the Taifa Stars that however came close to scoring the game’s first goal through Mrisho Ngassa, five minutes later but he managed to head wide when left unmarked from five yards.

Ulimwengu almost scored two minutes after Ngassa’s shocking miss but his low angled drive was impressively kept out by the exemplary Ikeme.

The Tanzanians dominated the rest of the half but were left to contemplate what might have been largely due to the brilliance of Ikeme. The point means Nigeria are still undefeated after the first two rounds of matches and now leapfrog Egypt as the new leaders of Group G. The Super Eagles have now amassed four points following their 2-0 win over Chad on match day one.

Egypt will overtake however overtake Nigeria at the summit of the standings if they defeat Chad on Sunday at Stade Omnisports Idriss Mahamat Ouya, N’Djamena.

Jose Mourinho insists he knew Chelsea were in trouble just 10 seconds into their 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Premier League title rivals Manchester City.

Goals from Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and Fernandinho saw off the Blues as Manuel Pellegrini’s men made a powerful early-season statement in their bid to claim a third league title in five years.

But Chelsea might have been dead and buried by half-time; Aguero missed several clear chances in the first 45 minutes including one in the opening moments when he raced onto a David Silva pa$$ and fired a low shot against the shin of an onrushing Asmir Begovic.

Mourinho afterwards revealed this was the point at which he feared for his side and voiced his frustration at their uncharacteristically slack defending.

“When the game started and 10 seconds later you have Aguero behind the defensive line and facing Begovic, immediately you get the notion that the start wasn’t good,” the Chelsea boss told reporters. “After that he made two or three saves because of that fragility.

“I was the first one to be disappointed. All week you are speaking about movements, directions of the game, mechanisms, Aguero’s runs and Aguero’s positions, the wingers coming inside, and after 10 seconds Aguero is in the face of Begovic. We were defensively poor in the first half.”

Mourinho also elaborated on his surprising decision to substitute captain John Terry for tactical reasons at half-time as Chelsea pushed for an equaliser.

“The point was not to take John out it was to bring [Kurt] Zouma in – I wanted my fastest player on the pitch, not on the bench,’ he added. “It was clear for me that Zouma has to play. I had to bring one out and I brought out my captain. He was on the bench and still my captain because the armband is just the armband.

“I can tell you that he was not dancing in the dressing-room, and I can tell you also that he was not having a bad reaction. He did what everybody does. The manager says ‘this guy comes in and that guy goes out’, and they all do the same. They wait for the team to go out, they shower and change and go back to the bench.

“My decision was proven right because we controlled the depth of the game and the counter-attack totally. But John is a player with my entire confidence for sure. With me, he was never substituted but with other managers he was not even selected. He was not playing or people thought his career at Chelsea was over.

“I don’t know if you ask many questions to [Rafa] Benitez, [Andre] Villas-Boas, [Roberto] Di Matteo, the ones who never played him. I’m the one you shouldn’t ask because I’m the one who played him every game, made him captain and recovered him from a difficult situation with other managers.

“I’m the one who has the right to look at the game and to say I want Zouma on.”

2 Indian brothers decapitated their teenage sister and
paraded her severed head through their village because
they disapproved of her 'romantic relationship' with one of
their cousins.
Several people watched in horror as Phool Jehan, 17, was
dragged out of her house, severely beaten and beheaded by
her 2 brothers this past Monday. They however, did not tell
the police what had happened.
The crime was only later reported by a local security guard,
one officer explained.
According to Indian Times, Police have been unable to find
the two brothers, named Nanhe and Gul Hasan, whose ages
are not known. After killing their sister, they left her body on
the street as they roamed around the north-Indian village
with her head.
According to reports, they shouted: 'This is what happens as
punishment for having an affair.'
Honour killings are common across India, but such brutal
slayings are extremely rare. While the brothers are on the
run, police have detained Jehan's cousin to question him,
said another police officer.
