It’s been a busy weekend for iPhone watchers with Apple apparently spilling the beans on the debut of an iPhone 4S via a premature slip on iTunes beta 10.5 and an unintentional welcome message to its yet-to-be-official storage service iCloud sent to some customers.

Apple is set to unveil its next generation iPhone and iOS 5 mobile operating system on Tuesday. The details of Apple's announcement are unknown, but the veil of Apple silence is lifting quickly. Apple’s invitation to the October 4 event is tagged “Let’s talk about iPhone,” -- so with the announcement date so tantalizingly close, it’s time to take a look at what we know so far about the next iPhone and iOS 5.

What We Know: iPhone 5

Design: Two theories prevail about what the next iPhone will look like. Theory one is an all-new design device (dubbed the iPhone 5), which would feature a tear-shaped design with a metal back and a slimmer body, as well as a larger display. Some, such as Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, are skeptic over this design. The tear shape would mean that such an iPhone would be thicker and heavier on one side than the other, making it unbalanced when held in landscape orientation, like for gaming.

Gizmodo published at the weekend alleged photos from inside Foxconn’s Brazilian factory, showing a new iPhone that looks exactly like the iPhone 4, but carrying a different model number (N90A). 9 To 5 Mac dug in the latest iTunes beta code and found references just to the iPhone 4S, indicating this could be the only phone revealed by Apple this year, featuring a dual-mode GSM+CDMA chip. A survey pointed that the iPhone 5 is the most anticipated of the two by consumers.

Features: Regardless of the design of the next iPhone, there are same sure-fire bets over the specs. It’s expected the A5 dual-core processor currently found on the iPad 2 to make its way to the new iPhone, as well as more RAM (doubled from 512MB to 1GB) and a higher-resolution camera, possibly 8 megapixels.

Availability: October 4 is expected to be only the announcement date of the new iPhone, with Apple Insider tipping that the weekend starting Friday, October 14 is the one you’ll want to put aside for queuing outside your nearest Apple store. If Apple uses the iPad 2 model and releases the phone 10 days after the announcement, then October 14 or 15 could see the new iPhone reach the first consumers.

Carriers & Price: The iPhone is now currently available on AT&T and Verizon, and Sprint is anticipated to be the next in line to get the new iPhone this year, says the Wall Street Journal, but not T-Mobile. The new iPhone is expected to cost $199 with a two-year contract, just as with previous iterations of the device. A lower-cost iPhone is believed to cost just $99 with a two-year contract, taking over from the iPhone 3GS as the least expensive iPhone.

What We Know: iOS 5

Known Features: Developers had a chance to play with a beta version of iOS 5 for a few months now, and Apple showcased the major new features as well. The big changes in iOS 5 include several improvements to Mail and Safari, a notification center similar to Android’s, Twitter integration and iMessage, an instant messaging platform for iOS devices. iCloud, Apple’s cloud storage solution is also integrated in iOS 5, so you can re-download purchased music, apps or books to any of your devices or computer, while the master copy resides with Apple.

Surprise Features: Apple is believed to have kept back from the iOS 5 beta one surprise feature – the integration of voice assisted functions in the iPhone. Anecdotal evidence from the likes of 9 To 5 Mac surfaced over the past few weeks that you will be able to dictate texts and emails your iPhone, as well as have incoming messages read to you by the phone.

Availability: If Apple sticks to previous OS release schedules, then iOS 5 should be available a few days ahead of the next iPhone, in order to avoid Apple’s servers melting down. It appears Apple has prematurely sent out ‘Welcome to iCloud’ emails to some users over the weekend, although the links to activate the service within the email are not yet functional. Apple Insider reported Apple blacked out employee vacations October 9 through to 12 too, which indicates the possible arrival date of iOS 5 to current iPhone 3GS and 4 owners, as well as iPad owners and the 2009 and 2010 models of iPod Touch.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Download and extract files.

1) Click on the Illustrator_15_LS1 application. (not on the Illustrator_15_LS1 zip/rar file.)

2) Extract files,the folder will extract to your desktop.

3) If the installer ask to restart then restart.

4) Open the folder that was just created and open the Illustrator folder.Next Open the Adobe Illustrator CS5 folder.

5) Run the “Set-up” application.

6) Hit accept.

7) Install, using “Enter Serial Number” ,Not as a Trial. Will need to patch the host file 1st.

Open the Keygen. You will fine it in the folder “Master 3264 Gen”/”64 Bit” .

9) Select Patch Host File. If it says already patched, it’s fine.

10) Select “Adobe Illustrator CS5 v15.x

11) Copy and paste the key, hit next and install. (Skip “Enter an Adobe ID”)

12) Hit “done” and close.

13) Open the folder with the Master 3264 Gen folder, Open the 32 Bit folder.

Note: You will see a “C:\Program Files (x86)” folder only if you are running x64 system

Note: If you are running only an x86 (32 bit) you will see a “C:\Program Files” folder

14) Copy and and paste the “amtlib.dll into the following C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5\Support Files\Contents\Windows

15) Open Illustrator, You now have full Illustrator .

16) Update, the .dll file allows you to donwload updates with no issues.

The Patch will make all trials of Master Collections CS5 full apps. Download link for Patches /32 bit/64 bit/(works for Illustrator also)

Open the file named “host” (I use Notepad to open it). Copy and paste the lines, to the bottom of the host file from C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc the one you should have minimized.

Click file\save it may ask to overwrite, click yes , Close all.

Restart your PC/Machine.

2) Open the folder named “DW CS5.5′ and click on “Set-up.exe” , click on “accept”.

3) Install the app in full mode with any of the serials I have provided in the folder called “Dreamweaver Serials”.

Don’t ever post serial numbers on the boards and Dont just randomly use all the serials, if you get an invalid serial issue most often 99.99% of the time your hosts will not be set or your antivirus software has reset your hosts.

2) Extract all to one folder .

3) Open the Adobe CS5 folder and click on set-up.

4) Initializing Installer, sometimes it will say you need to reboot first. Go ahead and reboot and start over.

5) Install as a trial and select language, then select next to install.

7) Close the program when done and open the patch folder. I run x64(64 bit)so I will need to use both patches x86(32 bit) & x64(64 bit).

If you only run x86(32 bit) then that is the only patch you need.

8A) Not all of the following programs may be installed on your pc. If they are you will need to overwrite the amtlib.dll in those folders.

9) Copy and paste the amtlib.dll to the following. I will start with x64 bit users…..

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)

Note: You will see a “C:\Program Files (x86)” folder

only if you are running x64 system

Note:If you are running an x86 (32bit) you will see

a “C:\Program Files” folder

10) For x86(32 bit) &x64(64bit) users,now use the x86(32bit) patch in the following locations.

NOTE: Note: You may not have all of the programs installed.

Copy and paste the amtlib.dll to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5

Copy and paste the amtlib.dll to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS5

Copy and paste the amtlib.dll to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS5

Copy and paste the amtlib.dll to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Device Central CS5

Overwrite the old one, some like to rename and save, up to you.

Once finished you can close the patch folder and the directory folders.

11) Open Adobe Photoshop CS5 v12.0.1.

12) If patched correctly, you can install Updates

Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 is the most recent version of the Microsoft Office productivity suite for Mac OS X. It is the successor to Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac and is comparable to Microsoft Office 2010 for Windows.
Microsoft Office 2011 includes more robust enterprise support and greater feature parity with the Windows edition. Its interface is now more similar to Office 2007 and 2010 for Windows, with the addition of the Ribbon. A new version of Outlook, written using Mac OS X's Cocoa API, returns to the Mac for the first time since 2001 and has full support for Exchange 2007.[citation needed] It replaces Entourage, which was included in Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac.[1] Support for Visual Basic for Applications macros returned after having been dropped in Office 2008.[2][3]
In addition, Office 2011 supports online collaboration tools such as Windows Live SkyDrive and Office Web Apps, allowing Mac and Windows users to simultaneously edit documents over the web.
Office for Mac 2011 has a number of limitations compared to Office 2010 for Windows. It does not support ActiveX controls,[4] OpenDocument Format[5][6], or right-to-left languages such as Arabic, Persian and Hebrew.[7] It also cannot handle attachments in Rich Text Format e-mail messages sent from Outlook for Windows, which are delivered as winmail.dat attachments.[citation needed]
Two editions are available to the general public. Home & Student provides Word, Excel and PowerPoint, while Home & Business adds Outlook and increased support.[8] Microsoft Messenger 8 is included with both editions, and Microsoft Communicator for Mac 2011, which communicates with Microsoft Lync Server, is available only to volume licensing customers.[9] Office 2011 requires an Intel Mac running Mac OS X 10.5.8 or higher.[10]

The Home & Student edition is available in a single license for one computer and a family pack for three computers. The Home & Business edition is available in a single license for one computer and a multi-pack for two computers. The Standard edition is only available through Volume Licensing.[11] The Academic edition was created for higher education students, staff and faculty, and includes one installation.[12]

Microsoft provided the most extensive look yet into the next version of the Mac version of its popular Office suite on Thursday at Macworld 2010. The new product, Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, will arrive in time for the 2010 holiday season.

Macworld spoke with several representatives of the company’s Mac Business Unit, who told us the company is focusing on three things with this new release: better compatibility across platforms, improved collaboration tools, and a more refined user interface. Also, as Microsoft announced last August, the suite will include Outlook for Mac, which replaces Entourage as Office’s e-mail client. And, in keeping with Microsoft’s 2008 promise, the new version of Office will offer renewed support for Visual Basic, which was dropped in the 2008 version of the productivity suite.

Compatibility, collaboration
To the Mac Business Unit, compatibility means more than making sure that documents, spreadsheets, and presentations created on one platform open and render correctly on the other. Noting that roughly three quarters of their Mac users use Windows at least occasionally, Microsoft’s Mac team says it's also working to make the new Office for the Mac more functionally compatible with the Windows edition.

“Nowadays, compatibility means more than just file formats,” Microsoft’s Kurt Schmucker told Macworld. “It’s also workflow, collaboration, and user interface.”

To that end, the new version of Office will incorporate document-collaboration features that take advantage of Microsoft's online storage features. With Office for Mac 2011, Mac users will be able to share files and collaborate on documents with other Mac and Windows users via Microsoft's SharePoint, SkyDrive, and Office Web Apps.

Those online tools will allow users to collaborate on documents with other Windows and Mac Office users in real time, much as you can in Google Docs now. You could, for example, create a document in Word on your laptop, save it to SkyDrive, then share it with others. A pop-up in Word will show you who’s working on the document; click on that list, and you’ll be able to send them a message (as long as everyone is using Outlook or Microsoft’s Messenger IM application). The paragraphs your collaborators are working on will be locked out until they’re done. You’ll also be able to edit those same documents from any computer, using Office’s Web apps. Mac users will have the same experience in the their versions of Safari and Firefox as Windows users get with their browsers, Schmucker said.

Lessons learned
Microsoft also says it’s learned from user feedback about Office 2008 and has tweaked the user interface accordingly in Office 2011.

Most notably, there’s a new Ribbon at the top of each document window. (If you want a preview, check out Office for Windows; the ribbon is already in there, although the Microsoft Mac team members we spoke to said they had learned a lot from the criticism the Ribbon took when launched on Windows.) The Mac version of the Ribbon doesn’t replace any menu bars, but it does replace Office 2008’s controversial Elements Gallery, which took some fire from Mac users for its size and inflexibility. This new Ribbon is designed to give users quick access to each program's most commonly used tools. Unlike the Elements Gallery, the ribbon is customizable and, if you want more screen space, completely collapsible.

The new suite will also feel more Mac-like than Office 2008. For example, the Ribbon is built entirely using Apple’s Cocoa development framework, and takes takes advantage of Apple’s Core Animation system. (As a result, Ribbon tabs will slide smoothly when you rearrange them.) If you click on some Ribbon tools, they will expand smoothly into popovers that don’t obscure the document you’re working on. We even spied a non-modal search box on the right side of the toolbar, right where you’d expect it to be, allowing you to quickly search through documents without having your content blocked by a floating box.

Summarizing the interface changes, Microsoft's Han-Yi Shaw likened Office 2008 to a teenager—“a little quirky”—but said the new edition is Office matured. “This is the version that everyone wanted,” he said.

Shaw added that the Mac team at Microsoft worked hard to adopt Apple technologies while also making sure their product was recognizably Microsoft Office. “We’re at a cross-section of Mac and PC, and because we’re die-hard Mac users, we look at the [Office] technology and try to translate it,” he said. “Following the Apple design philosophy really takes you in the right direction.”

Outlook and Visual Basic
The other big news in Office 2011 is the demise of Entourage and the return of Outlook.

The new Outlook will support PST imports (allowing you to move an Outlook installation, including all your old e-mails, from a Windows PC to a Mac). It will also support Microsoft’s Information Rights Management (IRM), which allows senders to specify what recipients can do with messages (print, forward, and so on). Previously-Windows only, IRM is required in some corporate settings. IRM support in Office 2011 is aimed at Mac users in cross-platform environments, Schmucker said: “It’s been a blocker for some companies because the Mac support was not there.”

And Microsoft has re-engineered the Outlook message database system to be a series of small files, so it’s more easily backed up with Time Machine and searched in Spotlight. “Outlook’s new database is more reliable, faster, and fully supports Time Machine and Spotlight,” Schmucker said.

Finally, power users will be glad to see the return of the Visual Basic macro language. Visual Basic was dropped from Office 2008 in part because it was too technically difficult to port it to the Mac’s then-new Intel CPUs. Microsoft says it began work on that port as far back as 2008—before the last Mac Office shipped. That work is now complete. And the Mac suite will be using the most up-to-date version of Visual Basic, so it’ll be much more compatible with Office for Windows than the Visual Basic in previous versions of Office for Mac.

We all get upset when our computer runs slow. Some of us are aware of the fact that, at some point, our machine is not running properly. The OS (Operating System) takes longer time to load and the whole computer runs as if "tired". You think of upgrading it and add some heavy gear, but it really needs a good wash of the "filth" that clogs it.

The truth is that the longer you use your OS, the slower it'll get. But Ashampoo provides us with a tool to maintain it nice and clean. The Ashampoo team presents us Ashampoo Uninstaller Platinum 2, a software that costs $49.99. I am curious to see if it is worth the money.

As all Ashampoo softwares, this one too has an interface the competition will surely envy. They have made an obsession out of making super good-looking softwares. And I say that with the deepest respect for their work. The buttons and tools are displayed in order, first the menu bar, then the toolsbar, submenus and their options.

Some of you may be already used to Ashampoo's double mode softwares. Their Platinum uninstaller makes no exception and the user has the option of choosing between Easy Mode and Expert Mode, according to their level. The latter of course, has more options than the Easy Mode.

I'll skip directly to the submenus, as they are the most important and most used. The first submenu is Start; you may not see its name, but it is the first window of the software. The options in here are Install new applications, Uninstall logged programs and Remove installed applications on the left side of the window and Check shortcuts, Search for empty folders, Manage Windows services, Manage IE Add-ons, Find and delete redundant files and Find and delete temporary files in the right side.

One would think that the software could offer nothing more, but keep reading, and you will realize the full capacity of the application.

In the selections section, the user can delete the registry keys that are invalid and even add new keys. The Drives tab allows you to exclude the files you want from the actions of the software. There is a file-tree on the left and the files of the selected folders on the right. Right-click the files to exclude them. In the System Files tab, the user can exclude individual selections in INI files.

Log Files is the one tab most users are looking for. It will provide you with the installed programs on your computer and will uninstall them at your request. It contains the following options: Available Log Files (displays every program or update installed on your computer), Changes in Registry, File Changes and System File Changes.

All these options I mentioned above should be handled with care, as they are not for everybody to fiddle with, especially the registry editing section.

Sometimes, after uninstalling a software, it will leave some traces on your machine and some of these traces include missing shortcuts. Ashampoo Uninstaller Platinum 2 will check for those "broken links" and it will allow you to delete them. The locations the software will check include the Start Menu and Qiuckstart (the
options are user configurable).

Your hard drive may contain some folders that are empty. This is the effect of a incomplete uninstall and it will influence the performance of your PC, so select all those empty folders and delete them; most of them will be located in the Program Files folder. You can configure this tool to skip the hidden folders, write protected ones, system folders or backup and the drives to search in.

Windows Services option will display all the services of your Windows OS, their state and a brief description of the activity. Make some order in here and deactivate the services you do not really need.

The IE add-ons are sometimes a blessing and other times are just a pain. Due to the respective function of the program, you can see all the IE plug-ins and add-ons and activate/deactivate or even delete them. This feature provides the same results as seeking in the registry, but the difference is that - with this software - you can perform an easier edit.

There are some users out there who have a huge "collection" of gigabytes on their computer (I admit I fit perfectly into this category) and it is impossible to remember all the files stored on your hdd. And it happens sometimes to store the same file twice or thrice. What can you do? You can use the duplicate files finder in this utility and delete the unnecessary files. I was amazed of how much disk space I recovered after scanning my computer for duplicate files.

The software is capable of processing 50.000 files in 3.000 folders on up to five hard disks in a few seconds. You can search the files by extension, name/size/content (very accurate, but slower processing) or name/size/date (less accurate, but faster processing). You will be stunned even if you are certain that there are no duplicates stored by yourself. The Windows and the Program Files folders are just clogged with small items that slow down your computer's performance.

Temporary files are just a nuisance, they occupy your disk space and they are absolutely useless at the end of the day, so you'd better think of getting rid of them.

I will stop here with my review of the software, with the regret that I haven't presented you the full capacity of the application; but hey� I do not want to spoil your surprise.

The Good

As I've said before, the interface is just great. The utility of the software is not questionable at all, and so is its functionality. The suite is absolutely grandiose and it offers almost everything you need to give your computer a healthy "pep talk".

The Bad

I wanted to leave this section blank, but I am forced to say something. In the Find and Delete Duplicate Files option, the user has to manually delete the redundant files, and if you have some 300 duplicates, then you'll grow another hand until the computer is absolutely clean. I know that it is pretty difficult to include a tool to erase the duplicates, but it is absolutely necessary (you can add some time or date related filters).

Again, I found some German notes, not in the software's menus and options this time, but in the help file.

The Truth

Despite the above-mentioned bad stuff, the software is worth giving a try. Especially when the developer offers you a registration key that extends the trial period to 40 days. Even though I'm a "scrooge", I am actually tempted to buy the software.

Microsoft Office 2010, codenamed Office 14, is a productivity suite for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X,[1] and is the successor of Microsoft Office 2007 for Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac OS X. Development started in 2006 while Microsoft was finishing work on Office 12, released as Microsoft Office 2007. The version number 13 was skipped because of the aversion to the number 13.[10] It was previously thought that Office 2010 (then called Office 14) would ship in the first half of 2009;[11] however Steve Ballmer has officially announced that Office 2010 will ship in 2010.[12]

On January 10, 2009, screenshots of an Office 2010 alpha build were leaked by a tester.[13]

On April 15, 2009, Microsoft confirmed that Office 2010 will be officially released in the first half of 2010. They announced on May 12, 2009 at a Tech Ed event,[14] that Office 2010 will begin technical testing during July and was publicly released to those who signed up to test on 07/08/09. It will also be the first version of Office to ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.[15][16]

The Beta Build 4417 was leaked to the internet on August 25, 2009. It contained a number of UI enhancements, as well as the near final implementation of Backstage View.[17]

An internal post-Beta build was leaked on July 12, 2009, newer than the official preview build and including a "Limestone" internal test application.[18]

On July 14, 2009, Microsoft started to send out invitations on Microsoft Connect to test an official preview build of Office 2010.[19] On August 30, 2009, the beta build 4417 was leaked on the internet via torrent networks.[17]

The public beta has been available to subscribers of TechNet, MSDN and Microsoft Connect users as of 16 November 2009[20]. On 18 November 2009 the beta was officially released to the general public at the Microsoft Office Beta website which was originally launched by Microsoft on 11 November 2009 to provide screenshots of the new office suite. The Office 2010 Beta is a free, fully functional version and will expire on 31st October 2010.[21]

According to an article published in InfoWorld in April 2006, Office 2010 will be more "role-based" than previous versions.[4] The article cites Simon Witts, corporate vice president for Microsoft's Enterprise and Partner Group, as claiming that there would be features tailored to employees in "roles such as research and development professionals, sales persons, and human resources." Borrowing from ideas termed "Web 2.0" when implemented on the Internet, it is likely that Microsoft will incorporate features of SharePoint Server in Office 2010.[23]

Microsoft Office 2010 will implement the ISO/IEC compliant version of Office Open XML (OOXML) which was standardized as ISO/IEC 29500:2008 in March 2008, though will also have the option of implementing as a setting the ISO/IEC compliant version of OpenDocument Format (ODF) v1.1, beyond 1.0 which was standardized as ISO/IEC 26300:2006 in May 2006.[2]

New features are also said to include a built-in screen capture tool, a background removal tool, a protected document mode, new SmartArt templates and author permissions. The 2007 "Office Button" will be replaced with a menu button that leads to a full-window file menu, known as Backstage View, giving easy access to task-centered functions such as printing and sharing. A refined Ribbon interface will be present in all Office applications, including Office Outlook, Visio, OneNote, Project and Publisher. Office applications will also have functional jumplists in Windows 7, which would allow easy access to recent items and tasks relevant to the application.[3][24][25]

In November 2009, Microsoft released a private technical preview (beta) of the Starter Edition to select people. Office 2010 Starter edition is a scaled-down edition of Office 2010 that only includes Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and Microsoft Excel Starter 2010.[26][27]

There are significant differences between the Starter Edition and other editions of Microsoft Office, such as:

* Included components: Office 2010 Starter edition includes only Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and Microsoft Excel Starter 2010.[26][27]
* Reduced functionality: Office 2010 Starter edition only provides basic support for macros. It is unable to open the following file types: .xla, .xlam, .dsn, .mde, .accde, .odc, and .udl. Add-ins are also not supported.[26]
* Supported operating system: Office 2010 Starter edition only runs on Windows Vista and Windows 7.[26]

Microsoft plans to offer a free web-based version of its Office productivity suite, known as Office Web Apps, that will debut with the release of Office 2010.[29] Office Web Apps will include online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. The web apps will allow sharing and collaboration of documents and files and also feature user interfaces similar to their desktop counterparts. It was also noted that the release does not include full functionality of the Office Web Apps and did not include the OneNote Web App nor the ability to edit Microsoft Word documents, however, these functionalities are enabled in the public beta release of late 2009.

The office suite for Windows Mobile by Microsoft will also be updated together with Office 2010. Windows Mobile 6.5 will be required to run Office Mobile 2010. New features include:[30]

Spyware Doctor with Antivirus 7 offers users a superb collection of malware prevention and removal tools, but its infamously strict trial restrictions makes it difficult to evaluate. With quick scanning and multiple tools for stopping malware before it infects your computer, the paid version is a solid spyware remover. This version differs from Spyware Doctor in that it offers antivirus protection, as well as anti-malware.

Installing the program annoyingly requires you to reboot the computer, but as soon as Windows finishes loading, the program will start scanning for malware. Impressively, the scan took only about 5 minutes, which is much faster than competing programs, and properly categorized problems such as tracking cookies as low-level threats. Once you remove the threats, which requires purchasing a license, the Start Scan tab will offer an Intelli-Scan, which is the Quick Scan rebranded, a Full Scan, and a Custom Scan. The Intelli-Scan shouldn't be confused with the IntelliGuard tab that provides access to the 10 subguards that the program offers. These are largely self-explanatory: Behavior, Browser, Cookie, Email, File, Immunizer, Network, Process, Site, and Startup. Pros: Yes, the download was free, and yes, this software does scan and identify tracking cookies and rogue anti-spywares that other softwares weren't able to.

Cons: Won't remove identified problems unless you pay for it. What a waste of time!!!!

Pros: The firewall does work, infact to much..It is a good program if you want to spend 1/2 a day trying to adjust all your settings for the firewall and then also the spyware. I dont know how it works, because I unistalled the program asap

Cons: Slowed my computer WAY down! I have 3 GB of RAM and after I installed this program, it wanted control over everything! Seriously..it slowed my computer down so much, I was barely able to unstall this program.

I bought BD total security 2010 2 weeks ago. After wasting hours I found out that the BD firewall blocks CISCO VPN and you have to disable (with special bat file I got from BD support) the firewall. A day after, although I asked the anti-virus to keep infected files in the quarantine, the AV deleted permanently my personal PST file with all private email. This is my first and last time with BD.

After using previous Bitdefender versions with pleasure the 2010 Range has to be the Worst AV produkt there is on the Market. And I am really sick and tired of uninstalling and reinstalling this crap every week! The scans are freezing,the Icon in the system tray doesnot start up,the Harddrive filling up out of its own , Bitdefender stopped working please contact custumor service (but you never get a reply besides uninstall/reinstall which is the Slogan on the forum and from the Helpdesk? ,Google Email not working Etc , Etc, Etc................. Check out their forum and read for your self , If you own Bdefender you are a paying BETA tester A total Waste of Money, Run and buy something else if you dont want to throw your Money away !

I was having issues with Bitdefender causing an inability, on my computer, to allow NERO Burning ROM module to actually do it's job. I would open either a new session or continue multisession and Nero would just freeze. This came after late updates to v13.0.16. I contacted everyone at Bitdefender and FINALLY I was approached by a wonderful person there (Nicole Balistreri) who assured me that the issue would get resolved. No sooner than I received her email...I received a call from Andy (a high level tech support person in Romania)...we spent almost three hours on the phone on Friday 11/13/09 and to Andy's frustration...could not find the issue with Bitdefender. On Monday 11/16/09, I received a call from one of the Software team people (Stephan) again from Romania....and after an hour or so...Stephan put his finger on the issue and fixed it. Now the software development team is aware of a glitch and should have a fix soon. I cannot tell you how impressed I am that this company went to the lengths to fix an issue for me. I am glad they are on MY side. I don't know why other people have issues with support with Bitdefender....YES...sometimes you have to persevere...but when the product works...it is one of the two or three best available. Minor glitches happen...try to lend a hand and fix it...

As a former customer of Bit Defender here are a couple of important cons missing: 1) Customer Support is near non-existant. 2) The moment your subscrition expires they shut off the program completely (not just withholding updates, there is a piece in their program that disables the program as a whole). While I can't speak for 2010, their 2008 edition would every so often hang and not be able to update until you uninstalled an reinstalled. While the protection is good, this program is a hassle to deal with.

i am using bitdefender total security since 2009. uptill now i have found it to be an excellent product which not only suits my needs but also covers my family requiremnets. my son uses the same computer and uses chat programs and tries to visit wnwanted websites from which hackers can access my computer or viruss can come on to the compuer.. with the parent control i can block any thing from my kids accessing it and the virus protection doesnot let him get any virus. i update to new version 2010 bitdefender version which is totally free for me. i had some issue installing the product and chated with suport which sovled the problem and i received followup mail too which make me understand that they take there custmers seriously. its a pity they does not have office in my country that their phone technical suport is available all over the world but i just had one chance to utilize it as i had to call abroadj(usa) which costed money. i was very satisfied with the tech support too for their respectrful dealing and helping me with my problem. For me bitdefender is the #1 security availbe in the market and its parents control feature is wondorful.

I have BitDefender Internet Security 2009 on a Desktop and a Net Book. I have not had any problems using this program. I had no problems installing the program and it does a good job protecting both the Netbook and Desktop. It is easy to use, understand has a great interface and easy to navigate. It does a great job scanning my incoming pop 3 email accounts and the spam filter works very well. I have contacted tech support one time and received a quick response. I would recommend this product to anyone and I have confidence in BitDefender to protect me as long as I use some good judgment about what attachments to open and what websites to visit and download from. I always have BitDefender scan any file I download before I install and/or open the file. I have used other products but for now I will continue to use BitDefender as my number one choice. I rate it a 4.5 because I think there is always room for improvement.

I am using 2009 verson with 2 years of upgrades. We are in a small office with about 10 users. We have had two infected machines to the point that they needed to be reformated. I look at this as the real test of the product. Yes, the users should have been more careful but that is why you have this product. May try the new microsoft product.

I just purchased the Bit Defender 2010 home antivirus product. I run Windows XP, Service pack 2, and Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 6. Bit Defender made it impossible for me to download e-mail from my gmail and paid Yahoo accounts, but not my Roadrunner account, and made it impossible to connect to more than the most basic of internet pages, and it couldn't connect to its web site to register itself. The program interface has no mechanism to shut it off, anywhere. I switched to the advanced interface, which was identical to the basic interface, and still no way to turn off the program. That right there is a fatal defect. I had to uninstall Bit Defender in order to learn if it was hanging up my internet connection - which it was. After uninstalling the program and rebooting my internet connection works perfectly. The uninstall didn't even go smoothly. Using the program's own repair/ uninstall utility, it hung up, though evidently after managing to uninstall it. The program's help feature had a topic on connectivity issues but nothing there. The program itself provides no information on how to contact Bit Defender Support, and Bit Defender's web site provides only a chat support that didn't work, possibly because of my connectivity issue; no phone number. I had to google contact Bit Defender to get a phone number to call them. Then I learned that they are only open 9 to 5, which is when I had to uninstall Bit Defender in order to be able to connect to the Internet. When I finally got them, I said I'm out of patience, I want my money back (which atleast they appear to have granted). The fact that the program has no means to turn it off is right there a good reason to not want it. And obviously it can interfere with Internet connectivity.

Tech gurus, soccer moms, Halo addicts—everyone needs security software. But a solution for one group may not suit another, unless it's BitDefender Total Security 2010 ($79.95 direct for 3 licenses). This suite has three completely different interfaces for users of different skill levels, with special support for parents and gamers, but offers powerful protection across the board.

Questions during installation determine the initial mode. In Expert mode, all program settings and features are immediately available. Intermediate mode offers a status dashboard plus tabs for security, tune-up, backup, and network management. Novice mode has no tabs, just big buttons to scan for viruses and check updates plus a third button that launches backup, game mode, or parental controls, depending on the profile. For this review, I cast modesty to the wind and left the product in Expert Mode.

All three modes include a high-level settings window that shows the status of all the components and lets you turn them on and off. The "Fix All Issues" button fixes any configuration problems. Interestingly, BitDefender lets you configure just what triggers that warning. Last year I griped that the suite's controls offered no visible response to a click; they do now.

Installation Tribulations
I had serious problems installing BitDefender Internet Security 2009 last year. This year was better, but I still had significant difficulties on six of my 12 malware-infested test systems. Briefly, the install failed on four, the product wouldn't run properly on three, and three would not update.

I went back and forth with tech support, running diagnostic utilities, sending logs, and launching the purpose-built scripts and tools they supplied. In the end, I completed all 12 installations, but I wouldn't wish this experience on the average user.—Next: Good Ratings

Good Ratings
BitDefender's antivirus technology is certified for virus detection and removal by ICSA Labs and West Coast Labs; West Coast adds checkmark certification for detecting Trojans and general malware. The product missed the latest VB100% award due to a false positive, but it passed seven of the last ten tests. It would have had an ADVANCED+ rating (the best) from AV-Comparatives.org, but false positives knocked it down to ADVANCED.

Magdeburg-based AV-Test rated BitDefender Very Good (the best rating) at proactive malware detection. The product rated Good for malware detection, fast response time and (in a departure from the other labs) low false positives. AV-Test rated its scan speed merely Satisfactory and slapped it with a Poor rating for spyware detection. This test used the 2009 edition; BitDefender expects better results in the next round.

Great Malware Detection
BitDefender promised improved malware detection and cleaning, and, indeed, it detected every threat from my infested test systems. Some it removed during the scan, it asked what to do with others at the end. I chose Quarantine for all; if that failed, I chose Delete. Sometimes Delete failed, leaving "No action is possible." Product Manager Carman Maierean tells me the user should then contact BitDefender for manual cleanup, but that's not how my testing works.

BitDefender left behind executable files for a third of the threats, with two of those still running. It also left tons of file and Registry traces. Even so, it scored 7.5 out of 10, beaten to date only by Panda Global Protection 2009 (with 7.7) and the beta version of Norton Internet Security 2010 (with 8.0). In a separate test using commercial keyloggers, its score of 6.8 points tied with the Norton beta for first place.

Looking just at rootkits (whether malware or keyloggers), BitDefender detected 88 percent and scored 5.5 points, a hair below average. Considering rogue security software (scareware) it scored 6.7, a full point above average. However, the Norton Internet Security 2010 beta, Panda, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.36 and eScan Internet Security Suite 10 all scored above 7 against scareware.—Next: Effective Malware Blocking
Effective Malware Blocking
BitDefender detects malware based on signatures, of course. Its B-Have module runs unknown files in a "sandbox" environment to detect malicious behavior. New in this edition is a third layer of protection called Active Virus Control, which analyzes the behavior of programs that make it past the initial scan and blocks them if they misbehave.

This multilayered approach was seriously effective. BitDefender wiped out three-quarters of my malware samples as soon as I opened the containing folder. I launched the rest and noted the product's reactions. It detected 97 percent of all the threats and completely blocked installation for most of them. Its score of 9.4 on this test ties that of Prevx 3.0. Only the Norton Internet Security 2010 beta (with 9.6 points) scored higher. Impressive!

BitDefender scored 5.5 points in the separate keylogger blocking test, a bit below average. BitdDefender's score of 7.2 for rootkit blocking was better and, like the beta of Norton Internet Security 2010, Panda Cloud Antivirus, and Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware 6.1, it aced the scareware blocking test with 10.0.

I tried redownloading all of the malware samples—those whose URLs still function, anyway. BitDefender didn't block the URLs as malicious, but it did wipe 40 percent of the samples as soon as they started to download.

This is a decided improvement over last year, although BitDefender still needs to do a more thorough job cleaning up the malware it finds. To read more about my testing, go to How We Test Anti-malware.

Simple, Accurate Spam Filtering
BitDefender's antispam component integrates with Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Thunderbird. It analyzes POP3 e-mail and automatically diverts spam messages into "Deleted Items." Those using another e-mail client or wanting spam messages placed in a different folder must define a message rule.

Unlike Kaspersky Internet Security 2010, BitDefender's antispam module doesn't insist on Bayesian training before use, although training is recommended. Though I didn't have time to train it, the spam filter performed admirably. Like Kaspersky, it didn't block a single valid personal message, nor did it block any valid bulk messages. But where Kaspersky let half the undeniable spam into the inbox, BitDefender blocked all but 13 percent. This is quite impressive for spam filtering in a suite, and BitDefender did the job without noticeably slowing the e-mail download process. Typical Firewall
BitDefender's firewall flawlessly performs the simple task of putting all the system's ports into Stealth mode. Outside attackers won't see your computer, and the process didn't cause any problems with file sharing. By default, the firewall automatically configures network access for known programs and asks the user how to handle unknowns. Though it doesn't make its own decision on unknowns as Norton and Kaspersky (and most modern firewalls) do, I wasn't overwhelmed with pop-ups.

When Internet access is restricted to authorized programs, the bad guys get sneaky and try to manipulate or masquerade as authorized programs. I challenged BitDefender with a collection of leak tests—innocuous programs that demonstrate these sneaky techniques. Initially, the firewall didn't block any. After I turned on Intrusion Detection and set the firewall for strict rules, it blocked all the tests, but the firewall displayed a lot more pop-ups. I was confused enough that I accidentally disabled Internet Explorer along with one test.

I tested the program's response to exploits generated by the Core IMPACT penetration tool using this same cranked-up firewall protection. None of the exploits succeeded in planting an agent on the test system, but neither did BitDefender report on their activity. I like to know when I'm being attacked, so I prefer the detailed reporting Norton offers.

Malware won't disable BitDefender's firewall. Try as I might, I couldn't terminate its processes, disable its services, or tweak it to "off" in the Registry. It's well-protected. This is a good standard firewall, doing its basic job without the added intelligence found in products like Norton 360 Version 3.0, Kaspersky, and others.—Next: Some Performance Drag

BitDefender tracked closely with Kaspersky in most performance tests, slowing boot time by 43 percent compared to 45 for Kaspersky. Last year BitDefender more than doubled the time, so this is a decided improvement. It slowed browsing by 29 percent, not much over Kaspersky's 22 percent. The automated Windows Installer test took 70 percent longer (78 percent with Kaspersky). And BitDefender slowed the file move/copy test by 23 percent compared with Kaspersky's 27 percent.

Where Kaspersky slowed the zip/unzip test by 28 percent, BitDefender had a greater impact—54 percent. But it more than doubled the time for that test last year.

The first full scan with BitDefender took 40 minutes on my standard clean test system; the average is closer to 30 minutes. Because BitDefender uses an intelligent activity-based system to avoid unnecessarily rescanning files, subsequent scans took just a couple minutes.

BitDefender's showing in my performance tests was significantly better than last year, but the bar has also been raised. In any case, the product manager was very clear: In a trade-off between better threat detection and better performance, BitDefender will choose detection every time. Surprisingly Good Parental Controls
Per-user configuration of parental controls is tied to Windows accounts. For each user, you can block Web site categories, limit Internet access times using a weekly grid, and block specific keywords. You can also block or time-limit specific applications. IM control lets you block unwanted contacts or limit IM to a predefined set of contacts, but only in Yahoo Messenger or Windows Live Messenger.

Web site filtering is browser-independent, and the application blocker isn't fooled by renaming or moving the blocked application. However, changing the system clock will fool the time scheduler. Also, a smart kid can evade Web site blocking using an anonymizing HTTPS proxy. I didn't notice the Web site false positives I observed last year, and BitDefender now logs all web sites visited by users subject to parental control.

K7 TotalSecurity Version 10.0, eScan, and a number of other suites tack on a primitive parental control module just to say they have the feature. BitDefender actually offers a parental control system comparable with some standalone products—a big improvement over last year

ให้มาอยู่ในตัวโปรแกรม หากได้ไฟล์ที่อยากป้องกันแล้วกดที่ปุ่ม Lock Now ด้านล่างได้เลยครับ

ทั้งนี้อย่าลืมกดที่แท็ปด้านบนทีชื่อ Lock นะครับ เพราะหากอยู่ที่แท็ป Encrypt มันจะเป็นการเข้ารหัสอีกแบบหนึ่งแทน

เมื่อกดที่ Lock Now แล้วโปรแกรมจะให้ใส่รหัสผ่าน 2 ครั้ง จากนั้นกด OK

Some of us here at the lab think there needs to be a "Netologism," a new Internet word, for registry cleaners, something that encapsulates their controversial, let-the-user-beware nature. You may know the species: They generally offer a free download and/or system scan, which identifies "problems" in the Windows Registry that they will fix, if you buy the full version, which is usually around $30. If you pay up and just let it do its thing on your registry, there's a darn good chance you'll boot back up to a sick machine, or your programs will have stopped working; the registry cleaner depends on you to distinguish vital entries from rubbish, and if you aren't careful it will delete system files or some such vital organ, leaving you with a forensic investigation. Hope you made a backup!

Well, here's another one. Registry Winner--not a bad pun--that promises to scan your system and free it from the old, dangerous junk that slows it down and compromises your security. Like the others, it has a slick, colorful interface with lots of impressive custom icons, a free scan that digs up some scary-looking stuff, and lots of fix-your-system extras. Like the others, it can either clean your system or crash it, depending on how you use it.

It's free to try, but the freeware version will only fix four errors. To do the Big Job, you'll have to shell out $34.95 for the full version.

Ok. So we got our hands on Windows 7 latest build and to be honest, it's very fast and reliable even its under testing at the moment.

Although at first look it looks similar to Windows Vista and why should it not look as its using the same Kernel. But there are lots of enhancements and feature additions which makes it better than Vista as well as faster than Vista, no doubt. You can keep my words.

So without wasting any time, let us look at some new features and options which make Windows 7 unique and better than earlier Windows versions:

1. Setup:

Windows 7 setup is very same as Vista setup. Same interface, same options, same wizard, same timings. Everything is same except the setup background and the boot screen which is too awesome. "Starting Windows" is displayed along with a glassy scrollbar in the middle of boot screen. The setup background is the same image which is used as Desktop wallpaper in the latest Windows 7 build.

It took almost 25-30 minutes in installing Windows 7. Nothing was asked during the setup. A few things like time zone, etc were asked at last. So you can make a coffee or drink after running the setup.

2. Windows Explorer:

Windows Explorer has also been modified a bit. New commandbar (without icons as usual), new left-side pane containing Libraries, Favorites, etc, new Details Pane, a few new options in "View" menu like Content and at last re-sizable Searchbar.

Overall new Explorer looks better and more simple. Also they have moved the "Group By" arrow to the left from right.

3. Desktop Context Menu:

Desktop context menu is similar to Vista but you get 3 new options:

Gadgets

Share with is used for new Home Groups, Display Settings directly launches the Graphics card Properties tab and Gadgets launches the Sidebar Gadget list.

4. New Control Panel:

Control Panel window has also been modified. The left sidebar takes very less space and resizes itself whenever any control panel item is opened in the window. It provides more space.

You can also switch to Small Icons view by right-clicking in empty area and selecting the option:

As you can see now you can save the view settings which was not possible in Vista and people complained a lot about it.

5. System Tray:

Now icons in System tray are highlighted when you move the cursor over them. Also you can see a little difference in icons when you click on them. The little arrow at start shows the hidden/inactive icons.

The empty space at last of the taskbar is new "Show Desktop" shortcut. It minimizes all opened window and shows the Desktop. Very handy and cool feature:

6. New Taskbar Options:

Now Taskbar and Start Menu Properties contains a few new options and has a re-designed interface.

As you can see now you can change the taskbar location directly from the drop-down box.

PS: Classic Start Menu has been removed. I hope it'll be added in later builds.

7. Ribbons in MSPaint and Wordpad:

8. New Windows Defender Interface:

Windows Defender got a new interface in Windows 7.

They have removed the "Windows Defender logo" from right and also changed the colors of window.

9. Improved Firewall:

Windows Firewall has been improved a lot in Windows 7. Now its more customizable and provides more security:

Calculator has also been re-designed. It provides 2 new options: Programmer and Statistics.

11. New Options in "Folder Options":

There are 2 new options in "Folder Options":

Hide empty drives in the Computer folder

Try to search the content of unknown file types

If you disable "Show shadows under windows" option, then all window loose the shadow around them and it looks very ugly at the moment but its a nice addition.

As you can see the black corners around window which doesn't look good but since its a testing build. Such GUI glitches would be fixed in later builds.

13. New Boot Screen, Login Screen and a little modified Aero Theme:

As mentioned at start, Windows 7 contains a new Boot screen showing "Starting Windows" along with a glassy progressbar in the middle.

Login screen is similar to Vista except the background. Vista login screen background is same as its default Aurora wallpaper. Same case with Windows 7, its login screen background is same as its default wallpaper which is also used during the setup.

And Aero theme is very same as Vista theme. Only a little tweaked start menu and taskbar. Also the maximized windows don't loose transparency.

Windows 7 strips away that ugliness to create something that’s light yet strong, useful yet still playful. Windows 7 grabs me in a lot of ways Windows XP no longer does:

Wallpaper

Oddly enough, Windows 7’s new wallpaper provides a great example of how Windows 7 pulls off a difficult mix of being both utilitarian and fun. Windows 7 softens Vista’s armored-guard persona by adding a healthy dose of personality. Its backgrounds come stuffed with groovy psychedelic landscapes, dreamy Dada-esque creatures, and candy-colored anime art.

By draping this whimsy over Vista’s security underpinnings, Microsoft’s helping make people feel both safe and creative with their computers, a feeling that comes so naturally to Apple.

Even if the backgrounds don’t suit your fancy, you must admire how Windows 7’s design team deliberately chose wallpaper that would have been shot down in a traditional boardroom. That’s a big change from Vista, where everything seemed to fall to the lowest common denominator.

Minimal hardware demands

Vista’s bloat kept it from running on netbooks, the PC industry’s single bright spot these days. Windows 7, by contrast, runs fine on most netbooks, as well as on older PCs. Needing another test machine while writing Windows 7 For Dummies, I installed Windows 7 on a Pentium III with 16MB of video memory. Surprisingly enough, Windows 7 not only installed, but its automatic trip to Windows Update brought the PC some new drivers, as well. That old Gateway PC will never be a game machine, of course, but it works fine for the essentials, e-mail and the Internet.

Chances are, Windows 7’s slimmed down footprint will fit well on your PC, as well, whether it’s a modern netbook or a borderline antique.

Adjustable User Account Control

Probably the most welcome change, Windows 7 tones down User Account Control’s overly aggressive policing. But if you still find yourself grinding your teeth more than working, a sliding control lets you adjust Windows 7’s paranoia level to match your own. It’s refreshing to feel in control of your PC rather than the other way around.

Shortcut keys

Once you learn a few shortcut keys, they become addictive, and Windows 7 brings several welcome ones. For example, placing two windows side-by-side on a crowded desktop took a lot of mouse maneuvering in Windows XP. In Windows 7, you click the first window, and press Win+Right Arrow to scoot the window against the right edge. Follow up with a Win+Left Arrow on the second window, and you’ve lined them up side-by-side, ready for quick information swapping.

Windows 7 comes loaded with many other creative keyboard shortcuts, a sign that the team had time to focus on subtle details rather than major overhauls.

Taskbar jumplists

Windows 7 overhauled the taskbar with jumplists – pop-up menus listing frequently accessed items and common tasks. Need to see one of your favorite Web sites in a hurry? Right-click the taskbar’s browser icon, click the favored site’s name from the pop-up list’s “Frequent” section, and the browser opens to that site.

Can’t remember the location of that helpful folder you opened yesterday? Right-click the Explorer icon, click the folder’s name from the jumplist, and start digging in. With jumplists, Windows 7 adds a feeling of immediate gratification that all too often went missing from Vista.
Libraries

After people amass a decade’s worth of digital information, finding pieces of that information becomes the biggest challenge. Windows 7’s libraries tackle the organization part of that problem by letting one library show the contents of several folders. Store your music in the Public Music folder, for example, and those tunes automatically appear in every user account’s Music library.

Libraries break tradition, and IT people will be doing a lot of tutoring in the months to come. But once people grasp the concept, they’ll be able to spend more time working with their information rather than finding it.

With Windows 7, Microsoft finally realized that people don’t need the same level of security on their home networks as they do on the Internet. Homegroups let everybody type a single password into their networked PCs. Those PCs then join hands to become a Homegroup, where every PC on the network can share all the music, pictures, and videos stored by everyone else. Of course, anybody can opt out of sharing their media. But chances are, most people will embrace this easier way to share their vacation photos and music.

Windows 7’s a huge step forward from Microsoft Vista, and it’s versatile enough to last for years to come. But Windows 7’s certainly not perfect.

As to be expected, Windows 7 is often too much about Microsoft’s needs, rather than your own. For example, Windows 7 no longer comes with an e-mail program, so Windows 7 understandably pushes Microsoft’s new Windows Live Mail program as a replacement.

Try to download Windows Live Mail, though, and the installation program tries to install Microsoft’s entire suite of Live programs. Then the installer tries to hijack your Home page to Microsoft’s ad-soaked MSN, and switch your search engine to Microsoft’s Live Search.

And the program repetitively begs you to sign up for a Windows Live e-mail address, no matter how many e-mail addresses you’ve accumulated over the years.

If you’re upgrading Windows Vista to Windows 7, Microsoft switches your default browser to Internet Explorer 8, no matter how many years you’ve been using Firefox. Internet Explorer’s Favorites and Feeds areas come pre-stuffed with links to Microsoft’s products.

In short, Microsoft’s trying to wring as much cash as possible from their enviable position of automatically landing atop 90 percent of the world’s desktops. There’s nothing wrong with a business making money, of course. One day, hopefully, Microsoft will be a little less obnoxious about it.

Let’s hope the company doesn’t pile it on so thick it ruins the Windows 7 experience I’ve found so far

I have finally decided to take the plunge. Last night I upgraded my Vista desktop machine to Windows XP, and this afternoon I will be doing the same to my laptop.

Look & Feel

Windows XP has quite a cartoony look and feel compared to the slick look of Aero Glass; this is mostly offset by the lack of strange screen artifacts caused by malfunctioning graphics code. You know, almost like static on the screen. This was a once or twice monthly occurrence on my laptop, and happened on my desktop whenever I logged in, and also whenever I played a 3D game after leaving Vista running for a couple of hours. I also miss the "orphaned windows" I got on Vista, dialog boxes that would not go away, in a sense they became part of the desktop, since you could drag a selection from within them, despite the fact that the Glass would render the selection below them. Such crazy graphics bugs appear to be a thing of the past.

Performance

Well, here there appears to be no contest. Windows XP is both faster and far more responsive. I no longer have the obligatory 1-minute system lock that happens whenever I log onto Vista, instead I can run applications as soon as I can click their icons. Not only that, but the applications start snappily too, rather than all waiting in some "I'm still starting up the OS" queue for 30 seconds or so before all starting at once. In addition, I have noticed that when performing complex tasks such as viewing large images, or updating large spreadsheets, instead of the whole operating system locking down for several seconds, it now just locks down the application I am working on, allowing me to <gasp> Alt-Tab to another application and work on that. I am thrilled that Microsoft decided to add preemptive multitasking to their operating system, and for this reason alone I would strongly urge you to upgrade to XP. With the amount of multi-core processors around today using a multitasking operating system like XP makes a world of difference.

In addition, numerous tasks that take a long time on Vista have been greatly speeded up. File copies are snappy and responsive, and pressing the Cancel button halfway through actually cancels the copy almost immediately, as opposed to having it lock up, and sometimes lock up the PC. In addition, a lot of work has gone into making deletes far more efficient, it appears that no more does the operating system scan every file to be deleted prior to wiping it, and instead just wipes out the NTFS trees involved, a far quicker operation. On my Vista machine I would often see a dialog box from some of my video codec's pop up when deleting, moving or copying videos. No more, now all that is involved is a byte transfer or NTFS operation.

Automatic Updates has also gone through a performance facelift in that it no longer hogs your bandwidth when you're surfing, a nice touch.

Device Support

XP comes with some impressive device support. In fact, every peripheral I've collected over the years works perfectly with it. Many have the device drivers preinstalled on XP, making their installation a snap, but for the rest it was easy to find device drivers on the Web. In addition I found the drivers quick and reliable, a far cry from the buggy, slow and sparse driver support in Vista. I'm glad to see that with their new flagship OS, Windows XP, Microsoft have finally learnt from the mistakes they made with the Vista launch. In addition, support for mobile devices seems to be significantly improved.

I've also found that XP seems much lighter on the hardware than Vista, when it's inactive the hard drive very rarely spins up, a major advantage for me, since I often sleep near my laptop. No longer do I have to try and ignore the continual hard drive drone, but can now sleep soundly just like my computer. I never did figure out exactly what Vista was doing with my hard drive the whole time, but I'm sure it degraded its lifespan with all that spinning.

Reliability

All I can say is "wow!" You can see that a lot of work has gone into making XP more reliable than its predecessor. The random program crashes, and hangs appear to be a thing of the past.

Internet Explorer 7 is much more reliable on XP as well, and has so far not crashed once whilst viewing GMail, when it used to do this several times a day. In addition, I can now actually close the thing down normally every time, instead of sometimes having to kill the process. Error collection seems to be far better as well. Instead of a dialog taking a minute or two to collect the information it needs, the dialog comes up and is ready to send error data almost immediately. I am sad to see the back of the Solutions tool though, it may have hardly ever delivered any valid solutions, especially for the standard random crashes, but at least you knew that something under your control was tracking that information. Please, Microsoft bring it back.

Speaking of which, I notice that the Reliability Report is also gone, again a sore loss, I really enjoyed charting the downward spiral of my Vista reliability, there were those occasional humps that got you all excited, and then the graph would continue its steady sojourn downwards. Of course, the fact that it only appeared to pay attention to a tiny fraction of the actual problems was a bit of an issue, but I'm sure they could have resolved that for the XP release. Ah well.

I also am pleased to note that Ctrl-Alt-Del does actually have an effect nowadays. Many times in Vista, I wished that they would make this more reliable so I could kill off the inevitable hanging Windows Explorer process (as a matter of fact, this is the situation I find myself in right now), in XP it actually does something as opposed to being part of the usual Vista eternal hang. Speaking of which, please excuse me for a few minutes, Windows Explorer has now been 100% hung for 5 minutes, despite my asking Vista to restart it, and despite me pushing Ctrl-Alt-Del several times over those 5 minutes. So I'm going to have to hard-reset my laptop. This process, by the way, is also something that amazingly seems to almost never be required in the clean and sparkling new XP.

Right, I'm back, thanks for being patient. I mentioned how much quicker you could start using programs from a boot in XP; I must admit that, appealing though that feature is, you won't actually find it that useful. XP almost never appears to require a reboot, so you hardly ever take advantage of a wonderful improvement like that, which otherwise would save you at least 15-20 minutes a day.

Gaming

This is another area where Microsoft has really excelled in Windows XP. Games are significantly more responsive, get much higher frame rates, and are far more reliable than in Vista. If you're a gamer, the upgrade to XP is mandatory. Whilst there are a few games that won't work as well in XP than in Vista, you'll find that on the whole XP supports almost all the games you'd want to play. In addition, it's vastly increased reliability means you'll spend much more time killing things than restarting, a welcome change I can assure you. You'll also find that non-X-Fi soundcards with EAX are much improved by their support in XP, which can really add a bit of excitement to your gaming experience.

Multimedia

Multimedia support on XP is vastly better than on Vista. Whilst content-creators had insisted on all sorts of intrusive features in Vista that made the multimedia experience a living hell for Microsoft users, thankfully with XP Microsoft were able to insist that their customers' needs came ahead of the content creators outdated business model. It's nice to see a corporation like Microsoft stand up to the cyber bullies at the MPAA and refuse to assume that its loyal customers are criminals. In any case, the DRM built into Vista was broken shortly after its release anyway.

Conclusion

To be honest there is only one conclusion to be made; Microsoft has really outdone themselves in delivering a brand new operating system that really excels in all the areas where Vista was sub-optimal. From my testing, discussions with friends and colleagues, and a review of the material out there on the web there seems to be no doubt whatsoever that that upgrade to XP is well worth the money. Microsoft can really pat themselves on the back for a job well done, delivering an operating system which is much faster and far more reliable than its predecessor. Anyone who thinks there are problems in the Microsoft Windows team need only point to this fantastic release and scoff loudly.

BitDefender's security products have long been a security geek's delight, with lots of settings to tweak and plenty of information exposed. BitDefender's UI designers have accomplished another extreme makeover in the $79.95 (direct) BitDefender Internet Security 2009, striving to attract average users. But geeks needn't worry—all the gory details are still accessible for those who can understand them. And this version adds a host of new features to the suite's already rich collection.

Your purchase gets you three licenses, with 2GB of online backup shared among the three. If you don't want the backup and tune-up features, you can save a little money by getting BitDefender Internet Security 2009 at $49.95 for three licenses instead. The company's pricing is more flexible than most—you can buy 1, 3, 5, or 10 licenses for 1, 2, or 3 years. Naturally, the yearly per-user price goes down with more licenses or more years.

New Interface

The suite's new look features a sparse main "dashboard" that shows overall status. If there are any issues affecting security, the dashboard offers not one but two buttons to fix all issues. Clicking either brings up a list of items to fix and lets you do so individually or all at once, which is much the same as what you'll encounter with Norton Internet Security 2008 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. A list of tasks lets you check for updates or run a full or deep scan.

As you select the program's other four main tabs, the task list at right changes appropriately. The Security tab encompasses all of the essential security features subdivided into four areas: local security, online security, parental control, and vulnerability scan. From the Tune-up tab, you can run a wide variety of tools to clean up unnecessary files and tune system performance. The File Manager tab offers access to the file vault (encrypted storage) and to local and online backup. And the Network tab lets you remotely monitor and configure other installations of the product across your home or small-office network.

Unlike any other suite I've seen, BitDefender puts you in charge of which system elements are considered critical. Each item in the Security tab includes a check box that determines whether or not the item is monitored. If the box is checked, then the status bar will turn red any time the corresponding feature is disabled or not working properly.

As you move the mouse around the main window, a help panel at the bottom offers information about whatever control you're pointing at—a nice touch. But all of the interface's controls act like links rather than buttons, which I don't like. Some of the actions launched by these controls are slow to appear, and without the visual "press" of a button, I was often left wondering whether the suite had actually recognized that I clicked something. This problem was especially pronounced in my virtual-machine test systems but was still noticeable on a physical test system.—Next: Extensive Virus Protection
BitDefender's antivirus technology gets mostly high marks from multiple independent testing labs. Both West Coast Labs and ICSA Labs certify it for virus detection and removal. West Coast adds checkmark certification for detection of Trojans, spyware, and general malware. But the AV failed to collect Virus Bulletin's VB100% award twice this year, once because it missed two viruses and once because it wrongly identified valid programs as malware.

AV-Comparatives rated it Advanced (the middle of three possible ratings) for signature-based detection but only Standard (the lowest passing grade) for proactive non-signature detection. According to Product Manager Carmen Maierean, detection overall was at the Advanced+ level, but the grade was lowered due to false positives. That jibes with the five-star rating from AV-Test for proactive detection of new malware.

The combined antivirus/antispyware scan checks files on access, on demand, and on schedule. You can schedule a Quick, Full, Deep, or Custom scan to run at system start-up or at any interval from minutes to months. The scanner looks inside your local e-mail archives if you use one of the supported e-mail clients (Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, or Thunderbird). And it scans incoming and outgoing POP3 and SMTP traffic regardless of the e-mail client.

The utility also automatically does virus scans on files received via Yahoo! Messenger or Windows Live Messenger. As a bonus, this edition can encrypt conversations using those two IM programs, as long as both parties have BitDefender installed.

Automatic scanning of devices attached to your PC is new in this version. When you plug in a USB drive, insert a CD, or connect to a mapped network drive, the antivirus will offer to scan it. That's handy if you use a lot of devices provided by strangers and don't want to risk bringing infection into your system. If that's not the case, and the pop-ups are annoying, you can easily turn them off.—Next: Rocky Malware Removal
I installed BitDefender on a collection of virtual-machine test systems infested with all manner of threats, among them spyware, adware, Trojans, worms, rootkits, and rogue antispyware utilities. Getting a suite installed on all of the test systems is often surprisingly difficult. Sometimes the malware fights back, and sometimes the installation destabilizes the system. Not this time—BitDefender installed with no problems. If it had encountered trouble I could have booted from the Knoppix-based Rescue CD to run an initial cleanup scan.

A full scan of my standard clean test system took a bit over half an hour, which is about average. But according to the company, subsequent scans are as much as ten times as fast because the utility limits rescanning of unchanged files. I definitely observed the scans getting faster, though not ten times as fast.

Scanning and cleaning a malware-infested system with BitDefender requires plenty of audience participation. During the scan it disinfects, quarantines, or deletes certain high-risk items, according to its built-in policies. Low-risk items are left for the user's disposition, as are items whose initial cleanup action failed. Depending on what actions are still possible, you can choose to disinfect, quarantine, or delete these remaining items. Sometimes it takes two or even three tries to get every item either cleaned or marked as "No action is possible".

I was quite surprised to find that almost every test system wound up with one or more items that the program couldn't fix. Also, a couple of the systems lost network connectivity after the scan. And three of them required Windows reactivation after cleaning—that's rather alarming!

BitDefender tech support said the main problem was that I went about cleaning up rootkits the wrong way. If the software shows a problem with "Rootkit-Hidden Items," the proper cleanup procedure is to unhide these but take no other action, then rescan after reboot. So why doesn't the program tell you to do this? Company reps also advised that the correct way to handle a report of items not cleaned is to scan again, and if the problem persists, contact tech support. I rescanned all of the systems that wound up in this state, and indeed, the program wiped out a few more threats.

I didn't rely on tech support for cleanup—I'm testing the product itself, after all. But just to see how good support is, I sent the team a log from a system on which a very nasty kernel-mode threat had resisted all removal attempts. Standard response time for such a request is two to four hours, and within that period I received an individualized removal program specifically keyed to that particular threat. It successfully wiped out the kernel-mode elements of the malware, allowing a final deep scan to remove the rest.

Even after all that manual labor and multiple scans, BitDefender's performance was merely decent. It missed a couple of the threats totally and failed to fully remove about a quarter of those it did detect. Full removal means that it eliminated all executable files associated with the threat, even if it left behind data files or Registry items. It scored 7.8 of 10 points, a bit behind the 8.0 attained by Kaspersky. Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 6 leads all others on this particular test with a score of 9.8.

On a separate test using commercial keyloggers BitDefender completely missed several and failed to remove others, scoring 5.9 of 10 points. Admittedly, none of the products do as well on this test as they do against actual malware. Spyware Doctor and Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware and Firewall share the top score of 7.3. Fortunately for them, I assign much less weight to the commercial keylogger test.—Next: Keeping Malware Out
Once the system is clean, you expect a security suite to keep it clean, so I next checked the product's ability to prevent that same set of malware samples from installing. BitDefender scans files on access, and even the minimal access caused by Windows Explorer displaying the filename was enough to trigger a scan in some cases. Other threats were deleted when I highlighted them within the Windows Explorer window. Within a couple of minutes, the utility eliminated over 60 percent of the malware samples.

For each sample that BitDefender deleted on sight, I prepared a handmade variant with a different filename, different file size, and a few different non-executable bytes inside. My efforts to disguise these threats were useless—the program quickly deleted all of the modified files. BitDefender's signature-based scanning is clearly flexible enough to handle these variations.

This initial cleansing was heavily weighted toward the nastiest threats—the majority of those not wiped out on sight were less risky items like adware and rogue antispyware. That's good, because BitDefender didn't do so well with threats that survived long enough to launch. It completely missed one of these and failed to successfully block half of the rest. Successful blocking means that it prevented the malware from installing any executable files. In this case two of the threats were actually running despite BitDefender's efforts.

The large number of threats wiped out on sight pumped up the suite's score to 8.7 out of 10. That's good, but eight other products scored 9 or higher on this same test. Kaspersky managed 9.6, and PC Tools's ThreatFire blocked every sample for a perfect 10 of 10. I expected better from BitDefender.

On a parallel test using commercial keyloggers, BitDefender completely missed more than half the samples but managed to block all but one of those it did detect, scoring 4.1 of 10. Since installing a commercial keylogger requires a human sitting at your computer, I don't give much weight to this test, but it's interesting to note that Kaspersky scored 9.1 against the same collection.—Next: Smooth Firewall Protection
BitDefender's firewall uses the standard model for program control—the first time a program attempts Internet access, the firewall pops up a message asking you, the user, whether to allow the program. But BitDefender works hard to minimize the number of pop-ups. For over 17,000 known programs, it preconfigures access without asking, and it also allows access for any digitally signed application automatically. Programs not fitting these categories get scanned for viruses even if the antivirus module is turned off. If the file is virus-free, the pop-up says so and recommends that you allow access.

In general I prefer the hands-off approach of Norton, Kaspersky, and Panda Internet Security 2008, which completely handle program control themselves. They wipe out known bad programs, allow access for known good programs, and monitor the behavior of any unknowns. BitDefender does minimize the pop-ups, but it occasionally threw some odd ones: It asked whether to allow access for its own updater service and for its online backup, for example. And in several cases, simply because the specific file requesting access wasn't recognized as malicious, the firewall recommended that I allow access for processes that I know to be associated with malware.

When standard program control prevents malicious programs from connecting to the Internet, they often try to sneak out messages by controlling an approved program or pretending to be one. I ran a dozen leak-test utilities that demonstrate these sneaky techniques to see if BitDefender would catch them. I turned off malware detection, so the product couldn't cheat by recognizing the signature of the test programs. Impressively, BitDefender blocked two-thirds of the tests strictly by detecting their sneaky tricks. That's a big improvement over last year.

The firewall was also effective at hiding the test system from outside attack. It put all ports in stealth mode, making them invisible from the Internet. And when I challenged it by running Web-based port-scan tests, it specifically reported that it had blocked a port-scan attack. It also fared well against exploits that I generated using the Impact penetration testing tool from Core Security Technologies. As always, some of the exploits failed simply because the target system was no longer vulnerable. BitDefender's intrusion detection system blocked some exploits. It detected others as known malware.

A firewall's protection isn't worth much if malicious software can disable it, so I tried attacking the product directly. I couldn't fool it into shutting down by tweaking Registry settings, and I couldn't kill its essential processes or stop its essential services. Last year I managed to defeat it by setting the start-up type for its services to Disabled and then rebooting, but even that ruse didn't work with the current firewall. As a last resort, I tried shutting it down by sending fake mouse clicks. I did succeed, but the number and variety of controls that a malicious program would have to click is surely beyond what any of them could accomplish. Windows XP SP3 won't make any noticeable cosmetic changes to your operating system, but underneath the hood are several security improvements worth having.

In addition, one researcher claims Windows XP SP3 will slightly boost XP's speed as well.

Microsoft is using an interesting method to distribute Windows XP SP3. You don't download it as a separate .exe file - instead, you download a small executable file that, when run, changes your Registry so that Windows Update will download Windows XP SP3. If you are comfortable with editing the Registry, you can instead use a hack to tell your Registry to download SP3.

The actual download of Windows XP SP3 weighs in at 65.6MB. Once we downloaded it, it took about 30 minutes to install on a 1.83GHz Core Duo laptop with 1GB of RAM. Reboot after the install, and you're in business.

Don't bother looking around for any visible changes to the operating system; you won't find any. You'll have to go to System Properties and check your OS version just to make sure Windows XP SP3 installed properly.

Microsoft claims there is one, exceptionally minor interface change - according to the Release Notes, a Security Options Control Panel applet "offers more descriptive text to explain the settings and prevent incorrect configuration of settings". Doesn't make the pulse race, does it?

But we couldn't find even that - our version of XP doesn't seem to have the applet in question.

One of the biggest changes to XP won't affect people who already have the operating system - it's to do with product activation and Genuine Advantage, Microsoft's way of validating its OS. Before Windows XP SP3, when you installed XP for the first time, you had to enter a valid product key or else you couldn't install the operating system. With SP3, you'll be able to install XP for 30 days without the key.

If you already have XP, of course, you won't need a product key to upgrade to Windows XP SP3, so it won't really affect upgraders. windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), just out from Microsoft as Release Candidate 2 (RC2), may not necessarily be worth the download now, but when it's finally released, it'll be worth the effort.
Security changes

Most of what's new has to do with security. In fact, five of the seven changes Microsoft lists on its Release Notes are security-related.

Particularly notable is Network Access Protection (NAP), which is available on Vista and on Windows Server 2008, but until now was not available on XP. NAP gives network administrators a way to determine a computer's access to network resources based on the PC's identity, and whether the PC complies with security policies set by the administrator.

With NAP, network administrators can set this kind of access at a finely granular level. In addition, NAP gives the administrator tools to bring the PC into compliance with the security policies, and then give the PC access to the network.

In addition, Microsoft has beefed up security by upgrading the random number generator. Last November, Israeli researchers said that attackers could exploit a weakness in Windows 2000's pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) and be able to predict encryption keys. In Windows XP SP3, Microsoft claims that flaw is fixed.

Windows XP SP3 also rolls up a variety of previous patches and hotfixes. Particularly noteworthy for Wi-Fi users is Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), which supports the new Wi-Fi Alliance certification for secure wireless networks. WPA2 is already available in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003 with SP2. Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), just out from Microsoft as Release Candidate 2 (RC2), may not necessarily be worth the download now, but when it's finally released, it'll be worth the effort.
A performance boost?

Microsoft did not claim any performance boosts for Windows XP SP3, but one firm, after testing an earlier version of SP3, claims that in fact, users of Microsoft Office will see a moderate speed boost .

Using a previous version of Windows XP SP3, Devil Mountain Software ran its OfficeBench suite performance tests pre-SP3 and post-SP3 on an Office 2007-equipped notebook with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 1GB of memory. The company found a 10 percent speed increase compared to the pre-Windows XP SP3 version of XP, which was equipped with XP SP2.

Craig Barth, Devil Mountain's chief technology officer, wrote in his company's blog, "Since SP3 was supposed to be mostly a bug-fix/patch consolidation release - unlike w/Vista SP1, Microsoft made no promises of improved performance for XP - the unexpected speed boost comes as a nice bonus."

On our test machine, on a 1.83GHz Core Duo laptop with 1GB of RAM, we didn't notice a perceptible difference in performance between Microsoft Office 2007 pre Windows XP SP3 and post-SP3. But we're not sure that a 10 percent difference would be noticeable. Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), just out from Microsoft as Release Candidate 2 (RC2), may not necessarily be worth the download now, but when it's finally released, it'll be worth the effort.

YOU'VE GOTTA LIKE Intel's Core 2 Duo processors. After struggling mightily with performance and power consumption problems in the latter-day Pentiums, Intel came roaring back with the Core 2 Duo, producing a chip that goes like stink without spinning the electric meter into a frenzy. Since it offers a better combination of processing power, energy efficiency, and overclocking headroom than the Athlon 64, the Core 2 Duo has quickly become an enthusiast favorite, capturing prominent spots in our system guide recommendations and prompting a new round of upgrades for many folks.

Now comes the CPU de grâce, a processor that takes advantage of the Core 2 Duo's modest heat output by cramming two of those chips together into a single socket, a product Intel can plausibly claim is the world's first quad-core CPU. The Core 2 Extreme QX6700 isn't exactly cheap and doesn't run especially cool, but it will turn your spare bedroom into the computing equivalent of a government astrophysics lab and make the neighbors terribly jealous—provided your neighbors are total geeks.

What hath Intel wrought with this quad-core beast? Do four CPU cores make sense in a desktop PC, and what sort of applications can really take advantage of such power? Let's have a look.

Core 2 Duo times two equals Kentsfield
We won't dwell too long on the specifics of the Core 2 Extreme QX6700. This product, which lived its early life going by the code-name Kentsfield, really is two Core 2 Duo chips mounted together on the same package. If you want to know more about the Core 2 Duo's basic technology, I suggest you read our review of that processor. Intel has used this multi-chip packaging technique in the past to create "dual-core" processors, such as the "Presler" Pentium D. Lashing together two separate chips rather than making one large chip makes good sense from an economic standpoint, because smaller die areas tend to make for higher yields of good chips from each wafer.

The result of this multi-chip fusion is a processor that plugs into a regular LGA775-style socket and packs four processing cores alongside a total of 8MB of L2 cache. Cosmetically, it looks for all the world like any other recent Intel desktop CPU.

The Core 2 Extreme QX6700

But here's a fancy illustration Intel came up with to show what's under the hood:

The Core 2 Extreme QX6700 runs at 2.66GHz on a 1066MHz front-side bus, so its clock speed matches that of the second fastest Core 2 Duo, the E6700. (The Core 2 Extreme X6800 is the fastest at 2.93GHz.) Intel probably chose not to push any harder on clock speed in order to keep the QX6700 inside of a reasonable power envelope. The E6700's thermal rating, or TDP, is 65W, while the X6800's is 75W. Fittingly, the QX6700's TDP is exactly twice that of the E6700 at 130W. That's quite enough heat production for a desktop processor, and Intel has already established a 130W thermal envelope for Pentium Extreme Edition CPUs that use this same LGA775 infrastructure.

In fact, the QX6700 should be compatible with many existing Core 2-compatible motherboards via nothing more than a BIOS update. Some mobo makers have already published compatibility lists for Kentsfield. Then again, Intel says previous revisions of its own D975XBX "BadAxe" mobo aren't designed for use with the QX6700, so nothing is certain. You'll want to check with the motherboard maker to ensure compatibility before taking the plunge.

Because the QX6700 is an Extreme Edition processor, it comes with a customarily robust price tag of $999 and an unlocked upper multiplier to facilitate easy overclocking. Intel also plans to introduce a less expensive Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU at some point in the first quarter of next year. That product will run at 2.4GHz and have a TDP rating of 105W.

Quad-core's performance challenges
The Core 2 Extreme QX6700 may be the apex of awesomeness in processors today, but it does face some formidable performance challenges, both due to its own nature and because of external factors. As a multi-chip package, the QX6700 contains two copies of a relatively well-integrated dual-core design. The two cores on each chip share a 4MB L2 cache between them, complete with dynamic partitioning and the ability to hand off ownership of data from one core to the next. Unfortunately, the integration between the QX6700's two chips is less than ideal.

Although they occupy the same package, their only means of communication is the system's front-side bus. The two chips must coordinate to ensure the sanity of the contents of their respective L2 caches via this bus. That will sometimes mean writing modified data out of one chip's cache into main memory and then reading it back into the other chip's cache—a positively eternal operation in CPU time. Both chips use this same bus to talk with the rest of the system, including main memory and I/O devices. Also, the presence of three electrical loads on the bus—two CPU chips and the core-logic chipset's north bridge—complicates matters. Someone looking to overclock his system's FSB may find less success with a Core 2 Quad or QX6700 than with a standard-issue Core 2 Duo.

If all of that sounds complex, just wait until you dig into the software issues. In order to take advantage of multi-core processors, software applications must execute by means of multiple threads. Today, very few games and not many other applications are multithreaded. We do try to take advantage of multithreaded applications when possible in our CPU test suite, but that's more difficult to do for four cores than for two. Many of the early optimizations for multi-core processors only use two threads, so their performance benefits are fully realized on a dual-core CPU.

There are reasons for this situation. For instance, one of our test apps, the MP3 encoding program LAME MT, employs a technique called linear pipelining that processes a portion of its work one frame ahead of the main thread and then buffers the result for later use. This method uses only two threads and can't take advantage of more than two CPU cores, but it is relatively easy to program. LAME MT's author says of linear pipelining: "In general, this approach is highly recommended, for it is exponentially harder to debug a parallel application than a linear one." On a similar note, we have seen measurable performance gains in dual-core systems using graphics drivers that offload some vertex processing to a second thread, but Nvidia's drivers, at least, don't appear to benefit from the presence of more than two cores.

The thread scheduling mechanism in Windows presents another challenge for quad-core processors, because it doesn't always make the best decisions. During our testing, for example, we found that the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 was turning in substantially lower performance running the same single-threaded task—a POV-Ray scene render—than the like-clocked Core 2 Duo E6700. This behavior was consistent across multiple benchmark runs and a little bit puzzling, until we looked at the Windows Task Manager as this process ran. Turns out the rendering work was bouncing around across all four of the QX6700's cores, playing havoc with cache locality and the like.

For the most part, you can expect the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 to perform like a Core 2 Duo E6700 in applications that use only one or two threads, but the QX6700 may prove slower in some cases due to additional bus overhead or bad thread management in Windows. Of course, when applications use more than two threads or more than two apps are running at once, the QX6700 will pull the tab back and pop open a can of whupass. We have some applications like that in our test suite, so you can see quad-core's true potential.

That potential, by the way, will almost certainly be more fully realized by future applications, especially games. Software developers know that multi-core processors are the future, and high-profile game development houses have been working on game engines that use multiple threads to handle various tasks. Heck, they practically have to given that the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 have multi-core CPUs. Doing this kind of thing well is by no means a trivial undertaking, but the general trajectory seems to involve spinning off threads for specific game elements like A.I., physics, rendering, and audio. Industry giants like Microsoft and Intel have been pouring resources into helping the conversion to multithreading happen, and I'm convinced that it will.

If you're not convinced, perhaps a couple of statements that Intel forwarded to us from key game developers will help. Here's Tim Sweeney, Founder and President of Epic Games:

Multi-core computing is the new standard for PC games, and we at Epic are thrilled to see Intel leading the industry forward with Core 2 Extreme. Its four high-performance CPU cores enable a new level of realism in games, with realistic physics simulation, character animation, and other computationally-intensive systems.

And here's Gabe Newell, President and co-founder of Valve:

Quad-core will change every aspect of PC gaming. It will change how we create our games, how we provision our service, and how we design our games. The scalability we've seen in graphics over the last few years will now extend to physics, AI, animation, and all the systems which are critical to moving beyond the era of pretty but dumb games.

I don't think these guys are just issuing blanket statements of support in order to play nice. That's not been their style, historically. In fact, we will have more coverage of the specifics of Valve's multithreading efforts very soon, so stay tuned for that.

Between now and when those next-generation game engines arrive, owners of quad-core processors will have to find other ways to take full advantage of their CPUs. The test results on the following pages offer numerous examples of applications that use four threads, and beyond that, there's always the prospect of really, really good multitasking. My initial reaction is that you don't need four cores for good multitasking. Despite frequent abuse, my current Athlon 64 X2-based desktop system rarely slows down, and when it does, available CPU time isn't the likely culprit. Then again, I sure wouldn't complain about having four cores at my beck and call.

Microsoft recommends that business customers use the above table to plan for the evaluation of new Service Packs as soon as they become available and to allow for the fastest possible transition time, in order to maintain all PCs on current service packs. When preparing for deployment of a service pack it is important to test your mission critical line of business (LOB) applications internally. Microsoft takes great care prior to releasing a service pack to ensure that there are no regressions in the product, and we test with many applications, but it is not possible to test with all LOB applications. Prior to deploying a service pack please consider the following as part of your deployment plan.

Choose an installation method
Identify the deployment tools and files
Determine upgrade options
Check space requirements
Test the deployment in your environment

Advice for Consumers
Windows service packs can be downloaded from the Windows Update Web Site or the Microsoft Download Center. Automatic Updates in Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition can keep your computer up to date with the latest hotfixes. However, service packs are not automatically deployed at this time. You will need to visit the Windows Update website manually to install the Service Pack. Windows XP checks the Windows Update Web site for the latest updates when you are on the Internet, determines which updates apply to your computer, and downloads them in the background while you keep working.

If you choose not to use the automatic update feature (or if you are not running Windows XP on your system), all the fixes and service packs are available on the Windows Update Web site. Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you to keep your computer up-to-date. Use Windows Update to choose updates for your computer's operating system software. New content is added to the site regularly, so you can always get the most recent updates and fixes to protect your computer and keep it running smoothly.

You can only install the Security Rollup Package if you are running Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a. Security hotfix support has been extended through June 30, 2004 for Windows NT Workstation 4.0 SP6a. Support for non-security hotfixes will not be extended, and ended as previously announced on June 30, 2003 for Windows NT Workstation 4.0.
Due to feedback and reviews of the feasibility and usability of the Windows Security Rollup Packages Microsoft has decided that we will not be releasing these for the foreseeable future. We understand that this represents a change of plans that may trouble some customers. While some customers received the initial security rollup positively, others expressed differing views. The introduction of Microsoft Software Update Services and the SMS Feature pack, in particular have allowed us to provide customers with more flexible alternatives to security rollups.
Security hotfix support has been extended through June 30, 2004 for Windows 2000 SP2. Support for non-security hotfixes will not be extended, and ended as previously announced on August 18, 2003 for Windows 2000 SP2.

What’s the purpose of SP3?

According to Microsoft, the goals of SP3 are:

Provide a new baseline for customers still deploying Windows XP, to help them avoid the inconvenience of applying individual updates.
Fill gaps in the updates users might have missed by declining individual updates when using Automatic Updates, and to deliver updates not made available through Windows Update.
How big is SP3?

Depends on how you get it. Through Windows Update the typical download will be in the region of 70MB. Through the Microsoft Download Center the download balloons to around 580MB.

What versions of XP can SP3 be applied?

Any 32-bit version of Windows XP SP1 or SP2.

Can SP3 be applied to Windows XP x64?

No. Users of the 64-bit version of Windows XP should download and install Windows Server 2003 SP2.

Does SP3 include Internet Explorer 7?

No, IE 7 is not part of SP3. However, updates for IE6 and IE7 are included.

If I install SP3 and something goes wrong, can I uninstall it?

Yes.

Hard to tell. So far, I’ve not actually had any hands on time with SP3 RTM. I was provided with a secure FTP location from which to download the final bits, but despite repeated attempts to download SP1, I was unsuccessful. I should receive discs containing the final bits shortly and will carry out some detailed testing at that time.

Wide Area File Services (WAFS) Software
WAFS software allows remote office users to access and share files over the WAN at LAN speeds. Its real-time multi-directional data replication technology ensures that the same data exists on all servers regardless of where changes occur.

It's easy to install and configure on your Windows servers. No change to users access, applications or software on user machines.

Key Features
Wide area network acceleration: Advanced optimization and acceleration only sends byte level changes between servers. Files are always accessed locally so they open quickly. Optimization eliminates overhead, "chattiness", and traffic.
Real-time system: Changes made to files on any server immediately mirror on all other servers. Files remain accessible at all sites. When new files are added, they appear in Windows explorer instantly, and can be opened immediately.
Complete transparency: Your users and applications keep using the exact same files, in the exact same manner. They are not able to tell that anything changed. Plus, you set ACL, NTFS and Share security exactly as before. At all remote sites, users access and work on identical files, as they change, from local folders on their server. Set ACL's centrally, and automatically project them out.

Encryption: 32 bit symmetric key encryption is applied to every packet.
File version coherence: If a user on a server in China saves a file, and a split-second later a user in the U.S. opens the same file, the user will open the file with the changes. It is simply impossible for any user to open an old file.
Full file-locking: It fully projects native file locking in real time over any distance. For example, if Mary in Tokyo opens a Word document on the Tokyo server, and a split-second later John opens the same file on the NYC server, John will get the standard message about the file being edited by Mary. He can open it read-only - conflicts are eliminated. Just like sharing across the LAN, locks that enable file-sharing are maintained.
Data streaming: WAFS synchronizes files' data as a background process, without impacting performance. However, if a user opens a file that was not yet fully synchronized (such as a new large file), WAFS streams the data to the application. For example, a user in Chicago drops a 30 MB file into a folder. The file would appear instantly in Windows Explorer on server in San Diego which also has WAFS. However, the data could not possibly be fully mirrored yet. If a user opens the file in San Diego, WAFS will stream data so that the file opens immediately. So even if it takes seconds to fully mirror the file, the user will be able to use it immediately.
Consolidated backup: WAFS can keep past versions of files on your backup file-server and you can always retrieve past versions as well as any deleted files. You can also schedule point-in time snapshots of the data.
Global distance, complex files, any number of users: WAFS handles the most complex files such as AutoCAD, scales to millions of files with rapid changes at numerous locations.
On-Line & Off-Line: Only WAFS can give 100% full access to all users at all sites, even if your network is down. WAFS transparently changes from on-line to off-line mode, and back again, in case of any network issues. Users keep working, and WAFS handles any possible conflict that occurred during the outage. There is NO point of failure.
Consolidation: WAFS consolidates remote data sets to one central site for continuous backup and central security setting & control.
