The Big Wedding - Movie Review

Only once before has a movie bombed so badly that I couldn't even bring myself to format a review, that was Friends with Kids and seriously - this review could almost be a reprint.

At first glance the cast is bursting at the seams with talent and not since the atrocity above have I seen talent like this wasted so tragically. Likewise the two hours of my life that I'm never getting back.

The Big Wedding purports to be a slapstick, ensemble comedy - all the elements are there, there's even moments of family honesty that give the audience a glimmer of hope but it never progresses past a vulgar, thrown together 'boink'fest. Lazy one dimensional trash.

I'm no prude by any means but when every joke, every scene and every character plot is based on crudity with no nuance and no feeling then what, dear movie lovers, is the point?

Genuinely wish I'd walked out - wish DeNiro did too.

Real Techniques Limited Edition Duo Fiber Brush Collection - Review!

I mentioned at the start of the month that I'd managed to bag the Real Techniques Limited Edition Duo Fiber brush collection for a bargainous €11.36 WITH delivery from iHerb.com.

They arrived at my office 7 days later so how have we been getting on since then?

'Duo Fiber' brushes aren't duo fibre at all - They're just synthetic

First impressions of this collection is how sparse the hairs are in comparison to regular Real Techniques brushes (some of my all time favourites). The handles are white aluminium with this collection, making them lighter to use, it also means they stand out in a sea of black handles.

I was a little dubious as to how effective they'd be once I realised that their density was lacking but pleasantly surprised that they add a new dimension to my make up collection for that very reason.

First up the Face Brush is ridiculously soft and the sparsely held synthetic fibres make the ideal brush for finishing powders when setting your make up.

The powder seems to be drawn to the fibres as tapping the brush doesn't release the excess yet when applied to the face you still manage to get an airbrushed effect as the powder skims over the skin.

The Contour Brush is more densely packed than the Face Brush but as you can see reacts similarly with powder. Flatter than most contour brushes this fits into the hollow of the cheeks (I have them, honest) and buffs contouring colours beautifully.

I've also used this one for blush and the effect is the same, airbrushed loveliness.

As I've said the original Real Techniques brushes are some of my all time favourites, not least because of their eye collection but this feathery soft Duo Fiber Eye Brush is an absolute cracker for blending out and crease work.

Again, the brush is shaped perfectly so that it sits on the crease of the eyelid and sweeps across gently. The trick here I've found is to let the brush do the work for you. Add more layers of shadow for a deeper pigment but never more than gently press onto the skin.

So overall would I advise you pick these up? Abso-lutely. I have nothing like them in my collection and I don't imagine you do either. Handcut and 100% cruelty free, there's not a lot not to like.

I'll go back to the main clincher though, these are professional quality brushes for a pittance in price. My order came from iHerb.com, they've given me a share code for all first time orders RLL469 that will get you between $5-$10 dollars off your order. Of course if you wanted to stock up on other bits that'd be your chance to do so as the site appears to be full of bargains. I stopped looking - pesky kids and their need to eat every day (selfish).

This weeks Pick is one of the many crackers from The Great Gatsby soundtrack.

There's almost an ethereal quality to this tune as it's woven through the story and describes the love story perfectly.

I'd almost watch the film again just to take in the breathtaking fashion and cinematography as Lana sings hauntingly in the background.

Beautiful.

Brown Sugar are Chopping for Charity - Come Join the Fun - This Sunday May 19th!

It's not often that I'm compelled to share a press release 'just because' but the fact that the super stylish salon Brown Sugar are continuing on in their charity supporting ways with this Sunday's event is too worthy not to share.

They open their doors this Sunday 19th May, in aid of the Down Syndrome Dublin and The Mater Foundation Spinal Injuries Unit. Last year’s event managed to raise a much needed €20,000 in aid of St. Francis Hospice, Raheny, which was a huge achievement for all concerned including the beautifully coiffed customers.

“We were so overwhelmed with the generosity shown last year, and all the brands that were so happy to show support,” says Brown Sugar MD Mark O’Keeffe of last year’s event. This year’s event will again see the salon opening on a Sunday, and their talented staff will volunteer their time, with every cent being donated to the nominated charities.

The event will take place in the South William Street, and Blackrock salons between 12-6pm, so why not book a guilt free appointment as a good deed or as a thoughtful gift for a loved one, or simply pop along to support these worthwhile charities.

New Nail Polish Obsesh - Cheaper than Chips MUA

I have more nail polish than is humanly necessary, I know this. Let's just say if the nail techs backstage at Eurovision happened to lose ALL their polishes in one go I'd be able to replace them all - twelve times over. Does that stop me picking the polishy feckers up? Nope.

Last weekend, having spotted an elusive Superdrug store in Wexford I was drawn to the new look MUA nail polish bottles - mainly because they are the actual hawk of a high end brand - can you tell what it is?

These dinky wonders are almost exact dupes for Essie bottles and at just €1.39 I had to pick a couple up. I've been fooled by cheap nail polish prices before though so stopped at the two that I fancied most. Bright Coral and Frozen Yoghurt.

The amazing news? These polishes are absolutely beautiful on the nail. Frozen Yoghurt above is an exact dupe for OPI's Planks a Lot and a very close match to Essie's own Play Date. The creamy formulation applies like a dream and leaves a high shine finish in just two coats.

AFTER two days wear!!

Bright Coral is just that, eye poppingly bright and almost identical to Essie's Geranium, again application is a cinch and here's the deal clincher (as if the price wasn't enough) These polishes laaaaaast on the nail. I managed to get 3 days from Frozen Yoghurt without so much as a scratch and 4 days from Bright Coral. Result.

So what's the downside I hear you ask, MUA is exclusively available from Superdrug and as all of us Irish beauty lovers know, those stores are as rare as hen's teeth - because of this when you do get to a store the MUA stand is usually desecrated. Well here's the great news that I was completely unaware of... MUA ship worldwide! You knew, didn't you?

I might just have ordered the rest of the collection from the site directly for £1 each! Delivery is a pretty reasonable £4.95, considering it's a butt load of polishes AND I got a discount of £3. My geansai load of polishes promise to be here in 4 days and I'll be sure to update you all when I try the rest.

Hey what's cookin's, good lookin's? We had a little Monday's Moments break last week because of the glorious Bank Holiday but we're back!

Wanna know what's chasing away my blues today?

1. The Battle of Big Blue Horn

Edlest Gorgebag being a Gorgebag

Despite me spending the last 17 and a half years doing everything in my power to keep this child from harm he decided he wanted to put a great big stinking hole in his ear voluntarily. That I was just getting used to when he arrived home with the biggest, bluest horn earring you've ever seen - yep I felt a little ill when I saw it.

Moment one comes in the form of him relenting and getting rid of the plastic horror (much to do with my fake gagging every time I saw it I'm sure). He's now sporting a much more respectable black button. I'm still not happy but I'm happiER. (Isn't he gawjus?)

2. Casa Cherry Plus One Kitty

It's a grainy shot but this little bugger will NOT stay awake!

Yep, I'm a dog person, unashamedly so but for months now the youngest bag of goegeousness has been haranguing me to get a kitten since he took such good care of the ginger runaway last year before we found his family.

Enter this cute little blighter, he's as yet unnamed (we're thinking Pusswell Hobnobbington or Jenkins). He's such a ball of fur I may be won over, Adam is walking on air while Diesel is still unconvinced.

3. Fingers. Of. Fire.

Out for a few sociables on Saturday night with Himself we happened to drop into the Quays Bar in Temple Bar just in time to see these lads. (The Kerry Boys I think)

To say they were incredible is an understatement - the roof was almost lifted from The Quays that night. Gotta love an unexpected treat like that.

4. Sneaky New Sneakers

For weeks now I've been salivating over neon runners in the shops because I've taken up my lunchtime walking habit again. Lusting after something summery to replace my black Asics Keyanos for the 'warmer' months.

Clearing out my room this week for the umpteenth time I decided to be ruthless and go through the bags of stuff instead of staching them out of eyesight as usual. That's when I stumbled upon these puppies! I must have them 3 year, brand new and completely forgotten about. ACTUAL SCORE.

5. Gutting the Crap Shack

Finally Moment five is closely related to four. We're having a shower installed in Casa Cherry this week (it's been like Angela's Ashes 'round here till now) and that gave me the push to completely gut the bathroom.. then my room... then the kitchen.

It's been infectious as the lads have upended their room and the living room since. We were completely ruthless and the place is gleaming. It's such a nice feeling to come in to a sparkly home every day and it's so much easier to stay on top of it when it's sparse. If only I could bottle it so I won't be tempted to start slipping/buying again. House upkeep is hard, yo!

Look it might be time that we just admit to ourselves that every time these Dublin lads release a single you can pretty much guarantee it'll be Cherry Pick of the Week.

It's great to catch a glimpse of the boys themselves in this latest of their epic moosic videos, even if Steve Garrigan is getting a few clatters. All in the name of entertainment, eh?

As with each of Kodaline's releases their talent goes way beyond an original vidjo and I can see Love Like This becoming an ear worm for many of us for the next couple of months.

Mariah Carey for OPI - Liquid Sand Collection with Swatches

Texture is the way to go with nail collections of late and the brand new Mariah Carey for OPI collection of Liquid Sands is no different. Drying to a matte finish with some serious sparkle, these colours are very wearable for an altogether different mani.

How about some swatches, eh?

Get Your Number dries to a bright blue matte that's chock full of blue glitter.

Can't Let Go is the purple of the pack, the purple glitter is more subtle here as it's exactly the same shade as the polish.

The Impossible is a firey red/pink on the nail. Again the glitter is more subtle but when the light catches it, it's mesmerising. Probably my favourite of the bunch.

Stay the Night is the most unusual of this collection, red glitter sitting in a black jelly polish that dries to matte volcanic ash looking loveliness. This is the most wearable of the lot.

April Favourites ft Kiehl's, Roger & Gallet, Rimmel London, Neal's Yard Remedies & Clarins

Can you believe it's May? Nope, me either. Because my March Faves post seemed to float a few boats I thought I'd follow up with the altogether unsurprising, April Faves - you didn't see that one coming, did'ya?

There's been a couple of stand out products this past month, more than five if I'm honest but I'm just including the ones that have literally wowed me - that is, I've used it and literally been wowed (with accompanying impressed sound effects).

I know I've only included the fragrant water in the top picture but I implore you to get to your nearest pharmacy and smell ANYTHING from the new Fleur de Figuier range. (starting at €6.95) It was love at first whiff for me with this seriously zesty scent with a musky feel and I've used one or not all of the range on a daily basis since.

Think orange, figs, grapefruit and musk. Think sunshine holiday in a bottle. Think the most unique and addictive scent you're likely to sniff this side of 2013. I've already converted 3 colleagues. I don't gush often but seriously GUSH.

Clarins Summer 2013 Spendours Eye Shadow & Liner palette: €39

The entire Clarins Summer range is a sight to behold but before I even opened this eye shadow and liner palette there was a gasp. The heavy weight palette is an absolute stunner as far as packaging goes but the buttery soft, extremely wearable shades contained have set me up for the Summer. Even it did take me 3 weeks to work up the gumption to use it.

Kiehl's Actively Correcting BB Cream: €29

I know the market is awash with BB creams of late, some even having moved onto the CC cream but when my HG skincare brand sent word of their BB offering I knew it'd be a pace apart.

With SPF 50(!), vitamin C and the ability to actively correct your skin as you wear it, this velvety soft foundation fooler is a beaut. Available in 3 colours but all leaning toward the lighter side of the colour spectrum, presumably because of the high SPF, Kiehl's BB is just what us pasty Irish gals have been waiting for when it comes to BBs.

Rimmel Salon Pro with Lycra Range: €6.45

I haven't been as enamoured with a polish range as I have with Rimmel Salon Pro with Lycra for a very long time. Check out my full goo at the range here and behold that ridiculous shine.

There's 22 new shades, 9 of which are formulated with Kate Moss' help and I haven't seen one yet that I haven't wanted. If you follow me on instagram you'll see that a good lot of my manicures are done favouring these beauties. The formulation is spot on and the shine incredible. All for €6.45? What's not to love?

Neals Yard Remedies Wild Rose Beauty Balm - source

It's not often that I'll include a product that I've only had for a week in a favourites list but, Sweet Baby J, this stuff is show stopping. Made with wild rosehip oil, geranium, starflower, hemp and rosemary seed oil I've never smelt or used anything like this before.

At the press event last week I was suffering with a cold. When we got to play with the product I gravitated to this immediately and used a little on my poor red schnozz. Instantly my skin felt more comforted and the smell is just phenomenal.

I've used the product 4 times since as an exfoliator, a face mask and a balm for sore skin. This, just like the Roger & Gallet MUST be smelled to be believed. Neals are launching in Ireland this month and you can find more info on pricing etc over here.

And that's them - it was torture to limit my picks to five but as I say these are the ones that have literally wowed me this month.

Nars Kuala Lumpur is a pink/peach with gold shimmer on one side with a reddened purple with gold micro shimmer on the other. Both are hugely flattering to green/blue eyes - luckily I have 'em and blend beautifully.

My one note with these is the huge benefit to be had from dampening the brush before application. The colour payoff almost doubles and the fallout is negligible. Not only am i using these alone to create a full eye look but they blend beautifully with the neautrals already in my stash.

Nars Kalahari

Nars Kalahari is a neutral duo with golden brown shimmer and a brighter golden brown with reddish undertone to complement. Both ridiculously easy to wear I've been reaching for this duo more than any other over the past week.

Again, I'd recommend a dampened brush for true colour payoff but Kalahari is an ideal duo for buffing out other colours or wearing on it's lonesome for a subtle day time look.

Nars duos are priced at a fairly spendy €33 each but I'll be honest and say that I had to stop looking. There's some truly beautiful duos on offer but my moment of madness had to be limited to two. (Those pesky kids and their need to eat!)

Behold, nail polish lovers, the brand new and limited edition Exotica collection that's joining the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure line for the Summer months.

Not your typical summer line up these seven shades range from a creamy nude to a burnt orange shade that has to be worn to be believed.

First up, a slight apology as I spent the guts of the weekend with my head under the duvet trying to fend off the flu, Cherry Link Love never made it up on Saturday.

On the bright side though, it's now found a slot on Monday afternoons that will not only get a lot more exposure but hopefully will attract a few more bloggers to join in.

I have to hand it to you, Benylin, you know how to kick a cold's ass in two days alright - pity they're the two days of the weekend and I'm fresh as a daisy again and fit for work today - BOO!!

Nonetheless I've been chasing the Monday Blues with a couple o' Moments so I won't let it get me down. Wanna see 'em?

1. Got Change of a Hundred?

Because I was late leaving work on Wednesday but had to hightail it into town, I hadn't had time to check if I'd the exact fare for the bus. (Since I'm now mo-mo-less). It was only when there was one hurtling towards me that I realised I was 20c short and only had a €50 note with it.

Pegging it into Starbucks, I asked if they had change and the snotball barista told me 'We don't give change' (With an upward inflection) If I wasn't already late I'd have launched at her but a lovely Dad with his weenchy baby came to my rescue. He asked how much change I needed - I showed him my fist full of eurobux and he handed me 50c. I'd time to thank him profusely, side eye the pretentious waitress and still make it to the bus! Result.

2. Boots Brownie Points

Normally I keep my Boots points for Christmas, Birthday and self pressies but when I realised Boots were having a scent sale this week and that coincided with my old Boots card balance being added to my new one then I couldn't resist a little spend.

What's more, the splurge wasn't even for me. How saintly am I? Like, seriously *polishes halo*

3. Iron Bear Approves

Behold Orla, my crazy niece, she's superhero mad and Iron Man's number one fan. We managed to bring her along to the premiere last Tuesday and she was absolutely over the moon.

When we queued to head in she was called aside and given a special prize for the best dressed Iron Man on the night - her choice of noms! Even Iron Bear got a look in, when he wasn't being dragged by the neck. Cracking night altogether.

4. So, You Owe Me Money?!

I was having a look around one of the never ending Blue Cross Sales in Debenhams last week and managed to spy a couple of serious office wear bargains on the 70% off rail.

Chuffed with myself I was checking out when the sales assistant looked a little puzzled. She darted off and returned just as quickly saying 'Oh you're entitled to the 20% Blue Cross discount too'. Eh 90% off?! Liking the cut of your jib, Debenhams. Liking it a lot.

5. The Sound of Silence

Yesterday saw me on my ownio in Casa Cherry from early morning to late evening for the first time in donkeys years. Youngest shagged off to a party and himself and the eldest trotted along to watch the Dubs. Leaving me to my sickness.

Gotta say it was absolute bliss. I managed to snooze on the couch, catch up on trash TV, get ~~all~~ most of the housework done and even took a geansaí load of blog photos. I love you lads, but sweet jebus the peace was glorious.
