Background
During her early years in the Ninja Academy, Sakura was frequently bullied by others due to her large forehead. To try and combat this, Sakura used her bangs to hide her forehead, fueling the other kids' teasing by indicating she was sensitive about it. Ino Yamanaka, realizing this, helped Sakura by giving her a ribbon that she used as a way of drawing attention to the cuter features of her forehead, which helped Sakura overcome her phobia. Despite this, Sakura felt that she was living in Ino's shadow and longed to prove herself as Ino's equal. Personality
At the start of the series, Sakura had a deep infatuation for Sasuke Uchiha, rooted primarily in his good looks, cunning, cool attitude, and prodigious talents. For that reason, many of Sakura's early appearances are dedicated to her continuing efforts to win his affection. As the story progresses, she begins to recognize that Sasuke is a real person with imperfections, and develops a more sincere desire to be there for him. Sakura also becomes concerned that Sasuke will someday abandon her and the rest of Konohagakure in his quest for power. When her fears come true at the end of Part I, Sakura does all that she can to stop Sasuke from leaving, such as professing her love for him and offering to join him. Though touched by her words, they do not stop Sasuke from defecting from Konoha.

Since then, Sakura has made her personal goal to bring Sasuke home, which becomes a recurring component of her role in Part II. Although she still worries about his well-being, Sakura is willing to attack him if it means returning him to Konoha. As time goes on and Sasuke becomes an increasingly more dangerous criminal, Sakura recognizes that Sasuke must be stopped at all costs. She also tells Naruto that she no longer has any feelings for Sasuke since he just keeps breaking her heart.

Sakura's relationship with Naruto Uzumaki, like with Sasuke, also changes throughout the series. When first teamed up together, Sakura viewed Naruto as a talentless idiot who deliberately tried to ruin her life, the result of Naruto's efforts to win her heart interfering with her similar efforts with Sasuke. However, as the story progresses and Naruto continuously shows his worth as a ninja as well as his dedication to his teammates, Sakura realizes that her initial perceptions of him were wrong. After Sasuke defects from Konoha, Sakura pleads to Naruto, believing him to be the only one capable of bringing Sasuke back. Although Naruto fails and is left in the hospital afterwards, he vows to someday complete the task she has given him. Realizing the lengths Naruto will go to for her, Sakura spends the next three years training with Tsunade so that in the future she can join Naruto in his quest to bring Sasuke back.

In Part II, Sakura learns of the various hardships Naruto faces: the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox and Akatsuki. Saddened by the impact both forces have had on his life, Sakura becomes protective of Naruto and tries to do whatever she can to help him overcome these obstacles. Sakura develops a deep friendship with Naruto, due to their spending a lot of time together. After Sai tells her about Naruto's love for her and the pain that trying to fulfill his promise causes, Sakura is filled with guilt. Soon afterwards she tells Naruto that she loves him and tries to get him to give up on his promise, but he does not believe her and tells her she is lying to herself. Despite this, Yamato and Sai have suggested that Sakura's feelings for Naruto are more than mere friendship.

Unlike the rest of Team 7, Sakura is the only one of the four members who has not suffered any heavy losses. Therefore, things that her teammates desire, such as family and friends, Sakura took for granted. Also, Sakura is quite outspoken, as when she doesn't understand something or if it bothers her, she tends to practically yell out in questioning or complaining to someone. However, all of this seemed to change by Part II, as she becomes more knowledgeable towards Naruto and Sasuke's sufferings, and tries to ease them. As her personality matures, she also shouts less, but still questions unknown situations plenty.

Plot Summary:
Hercules, son of Zeus and Hera, is kidnapped by Hades (God of the underworld). Hades is in the process of overthrowing Zeus but according to the fates, Hercules is the only one who will be able to stop it. So Hades has his henchmen Pain and Panic kidnap the child and remove his immortality to kill him. Pain and Panic blunder and leave a mortal child with super strength. Herc is then adopted by a mortal family.

As a young teen, Herc has a lot of trouble fitting in and soon discovers he is the son of Zeus and wants to take his place among the Gods, but he has to prove himself worthy. With his old pal Pegasus in tow, he goes to satyr Phil, the hero trainer.

After several years, Phil takes Herc out to start “heroing.” He saves Meg from a centaur and heads to Thebes to be the town hero. After several false starts, Herc becomes the almighty hero of Thebes despite Hades attempts to kill him.

Meg turns out to be just another pawn used by Hades until both she and Herc reveal their feelings towards one another and Herc gives up his super strength to save Meg from a lifetime of servitude.

Hades plans backfire and Herc saves Olympus from the Titans and rescues Meg. He turns down God-hood to be with Meg.

Some fun pop songs, but nothing too powerful.

Plot Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Straying from the original Hercules myths, this was a fun movie to watch, but not one of the best. Again, I was very happy as a child to have another Hero movie, and am still happy to have this one in the cannon. I found the score a bit too pop and gospel for the movie, and I didn’t enjoy some of the jokes that were out of place (like the Hercules action figures).

Animation Rating: 4 out of 5

WDAS’ over reliance on CGI didn’t show too much for this movie. It was subtle and more enjoyable to only see the Titans as CG characters while the rest of the movie was clean and clear. It was interesting how bright the colors were verses the previous movies. The colors harkened back to the brightness (and style) of the movies between Cinderella and Lady and the Tramp.

The Test of Time:

Again we see that another renaissance movie doesn’t quite stand the test of time. As one of my favorite as a child I love this movie, but it has easily fallen to the wayside in my memories.

Where is Herc’s presence in the parks? And outside of the short lived “Heroes” line of merchandising, Herc hasn’t had much play.

Through the Modern Lens

A coming of age story, where one person has to pretend to be something they are not in order to get their mate! Wait a second, doesn’t that sound like most of the WDAS movies of the past ten years? Not that I would ever get tired of musicals, I can see how audiences are about to wane away from the Disney musical. They’ve truly started to just rehash the same archetypes over and over again.

In the article, “Let the polar bears die, liberals: It’s only your beloved evolution at work” author S.E. Cupp argues that if polar bears (or any other single species) are on track for extinction, we should not interfere. At one point Cupp asserts that protecting an endangered animal would be meddling with evolution:

“The crass and sometimes violent coming and going of species proves evolution’s central logic. So why, then, do polar bear activists insist that another species – that would be us – tamper with Darwin’s grand design and swoop in to save an animal that simply wasn’t fit enough to make it in the cutthroat world of biological survival?”

I disagree with Cupp that we should forgo the protection of endangered animals in favor of allowing threatened wildlife to become extinct. Further, the argument that wildlife conservation intrudes on evolution is fallacious, and exposes Cupp’s fundamental misunderstanding of evolution, natural selection and artificial selection.

To take a step back, understanding the difference between evolution, natural selection and human-caused (or artificial) selection is crucial before considering whether to conserve wildlife. Natural selection and evolution are not synonymous. Simply put, evolution occurs when a population changes over time in response to pressure from the environment. Natural selection is how changes can accumulate in an evolving population. As a result of natural selection, individuals with certain traits survive and reproduce at the expense of their peers. Evolution by natural selection happens very slowly, as living things respond to their environment over hundreds to thousands of years.

Artificial selection, also known as selective breeding or human-caused selection, was first described by Charles Darwin to distinguish the process from natural selection. As opposed to natural selection, in which the environment acts as a sieve through which only certain variations can pass, in artificial selection humans favor specific traits and direct their persistence. Artificial selection — which Cupp mistakenly refers to as “evolution” — is not the result of random, unpredictable events like weather or natural disasters, but is a direct result of our behavior.

Humans have drastically altered the appearance of animals and plants within a few generations by way of artificial selection. Consider the creation of hundreds of distinct dog breeds selected and maintained by humans within the past 150 years or the directed transformation of teosinte into modern cultivars of corn for food. The rapid evolution of such radical changes in structure and function are unheard of with natural selection.

While it’s true that we have loaded the atmosphere with an unprecedented amount of carbon dioxide and global temperatures are changing as a result, it is not true that we have no control over the situation. Further, the extreme changes in the composition of atmosphere have taken place within the past 2oo years — a pace exclusive to artificial selection. When humans accelerate change with artificial selection, the participants of natural selection can, understandably, not keep up.

As humans we have the ability to understand cause and effect. We are able to think about consequences, make responsible choices about how to behave and when to change the way we do things. The same cannot be said for nature with its weather and natural disasters. As sentient beings with a conscience and the ability to make premeditated decisions, it is our responsibility to maintain our planet for future generations — both human and animal.
