A Few Facebook tips and tricks – for those who like some privacy!

Thinking about privacy and looking around me I found that it might be good to have a little tutorial on a few of the settings available in the most common of social networks (to date). It also, despite a lot of flak, does have fairly advanced privacy controls.

I like the Google+ way of doing this, and it’s easier to explain:
You have circles. When you post about your drunken antics on the weekend, you choose to share this with your “Closest Friends” circle. When you make a general statement, you choose to make it public and when you create a limited, non shareable post, well that’s a private message, not that dissimilar to an email…

A lot of people post and post away on Facebook and never get the results they had hoped for. Whether it’s not getting new fans or not getting anyone interacting with them, it’s just not making business happen. We all want great brand ambassadors, right? Did you ever consider that maybe your posts just aren’t getting to those people that will be your brand ambassadors? Here are some tips on how to change that:

Set a username: If you go to Facebook’s username page, you will get a screen that looks like this: From here you can change your personal username (if you haven’t already) or you can choose a page from the menu to pick your page’s username. You should do this, because it makes your page more sharable. If you don’t, you will be telling people to either search for you on Facebook or give them a url that is not easy to remember. Make it short and make it memorable and you can spread the word about your great page much easier.
Ask a question: Facebook has this lovely little thing called an algorithm. It decides just how many people will see your posts. Yup, not all of your fans are seeing your posts. Facebook uses a few factors when deciding if fans will see a particular post. The first is engagement. Are people liking it? But more importantly, are they commenting? If you post about this Thursday’s happy hour with just the details, your fans will just acknowledge it and move on with no reason to act. If you post about the happy hour and ask which of the one hundred beers at this particular bar are you going to try first, suddenly your fans have something to react to. And suddenly more people see your post. Win-win.
Post frequently: The other major part of the algorithm is frequency of posts. At a bare minimum, you have to post every other day. Otherwise, your fans will not see all of your posts. Better yet is trying to post every day. The easiest way to keep up with this kind of demand is to create a calendar ahead of time and write out your posts, along with any links, media or tags that you will have to include. Remember, there is too much of a good thing. You will know if you are posting too much when your fans stop interacting with you and yes, that will mean your post will no longer be seen. Play with it and find your sweet spot. But, to be honest, anything more than two is probably too much.
You can only post one event at a time: I cannot stress this enough. I get so many event invites it’s ridiculous. Sometimes five at a time from one page. As soon as I see that, I just reply no without even looking at what the event is. Look at what you are trying to promote. Would it be better served by a like button? Or maybe it’s just something you can post about? Most likely yes and yes. Events are overused and are not as effective as you think. A Facebook like button flies a lot faster and will probably give you the mileage you want. But if you absolutely have to do an event, only do one.
Facebook like buttons are easy to generate: Facebook has made it easy and will generate the like button code for you. You should put the button on everything you want your fans to share, including blog posts or any events you’re promoting your website. And hey, with blog posts, there usually is a plug in that will do the Facebook like buttons for you so that you do not have to do it manually every time. In other words, there is no reason not to have several Facebook like buttons throughout your website. It will drive people there.
Links are customizable: You probably know that you can pick what picture you use when you post a link, but did you know that you can change the text too? It’s a nice trick to have in case you’re posting a pdf or any link that doesn’t have good SEO information (if it’s your site, fix that). It’s also nice to have when you want to call attention to a part of an article that maybe doesn’t get mentioned in the description. To do this, all you have to do is click on the text that is generated when you input the link. So you can take a link about online safety and turn it into a link about my psycho obsession with the most awesome cat in the world. Pretty cool, huh?
Post via Facebook: This is my controversial advice. There are lots of reasons to do it. You can’t tag people and pages when in an application, links don’t appear correctly, etc. I could seriously go on all night. But I actually have a better reason: Your post may not be seen. Here is what I saw under a Facebook post today: Do you know what I saw when I clicked on it? Posts from five pages and two friends. I honestly just thought most of those affected by this never posted. Apparently they do. I just never see it. A lot of us spend a lot of time railing against those that tweet via Facebook. Well, guess what. The reverse is true too. And I hate to tell you guys, but this is what happens when you use Networked Blogs or other such programs to post your blog posts to Facebook. Oh and Hootsuite and Tweetdeck? They do it too! You’re shorting yourself and your fans by using these programs. Take five seconds and just do it in Facebook.
You can remove posts: Sometimes people post things on your page that are just inappropriate. This is your page. You set the rules. I suggest removing any inflammatory posts or any obvious spam. Beyond that, keep the others and respond where appropriate (and it’s almost always appropriate). To remove posts, all you have to do is hover on the right corner of the post. An “x” shows up and you can identify the post as spam or just delete it. So, if you currently have your wall closed to comments, you just lost your reason, so open it up now.
Do not constantly change your page’s picture: This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I’m a content curator. I’m looking to take your great press and use it elsewhere so that more people know about how awesome you are. In doing that, I usually scan through Facebook looking for the people and pages that provide the most content for me. I’m not looking at names. I’m looking at pictures. So, in other words, if you keep changing your picture every two days, I’m going to miss you and I’m going to be really annoyed by that. Normal people who want to interact with you are doing this too, but to a lesser degree. Once again, you’re cheating yourself out of engagement. Keep it consistent and/or recognizable.
Remember where people are reading your posts: And where is that? Their new feed, not on your page. When you say things like, “Click on the Contest tab on the left side of our page to enter,” you sound like an idiot to those that know what you mean and you’re confusing those that don’t. They’ll spend time trying to figure out what you mean instead of entering the contest. Post a link to the tab and don’t shorten it. People are more likely to click through if they see that full link in the post. (h/t to @WhosYourAnnie on this one)
Highlight your fans: This is one of my favorite tricks. If done correctly, it drives your fans’ friends to your page. If done incorrectly, no one sees it. If you are a DMO, I would start with a tourism business of the week. Tag them in the post and also put the link of their Facebook page into it (the picture makes it prettier). What happens is that the business will be happy that you highlighted them (good relationship builder) and they will, in turn, post about it (good fan base builder). Once you have a great fan base, then you might want to consider highlighting your fans that might come for a visit. However, this gets trickier since you can’t tag them. They won’t be alerted to the honor and might miss it. But it is something to play with and might get people looking for your posts.

There is more I can tell you, but if you keep these tips in mind, you will have the basis for a valuable Facebook page. Now, are there any tips I missed?

Have you moved to Google+ but don’t want to loose touch with facebook and Twitter.In one of my earlier post’s I gave you the trick to integrate Google+ and Facebook using Google+Facebook extension. With a new Google Chrome addon Gooce+ you can integrate Facebook,Twitter and Linkedin with your Google+ Accounts.

Requirements:-

Google Chrome web browser
Gooce+ (Google Chrome extension)

Trick integrate various social networking site in google+

Open your Google Chrome web browser and click here to get the Gooce+ extension.
Now Click on Add to chrome button.
Click on Continue button (at the left bottom of your screen) and then click oninstall button.
Now login to your Google+ Account.
Here you will see Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin icons in your Google+ homepage.
Click on any of the icon that you want to access at that time in Google+. E.g If you want to Log in into Facebook from Google+.
Click on the Facebook Icon and then click on Sign with Facebook button.
Enter your Facebook login details in new popup window.
After login it will Request For Permissions . Click on the Allow button

If you are getting any kind of problem like 404 Error after clicking on the Allow button then don’t panic. Go to your Google+ homepage again and click on the Facebook icon and you will see your Facebook wall on your screen in Google+

How to automatically send Happy Birthday greetings to Facebook friends

Let's face it, one of the good things about Facebook is that it remind us about friend’s birthdays and makes giving them good wises very easy. It 'easy to remember dates .. but we need to login every day and sometimes a friend’s birthday passes unnoticed. Here is a nice extension for everyone, to wish friends the best during their birthday!

The ' HappyBirthday extension for Google Chrome allows you to automatically send greetings to your Facebook friends. The cards are selected from a predefined list of (customizable) cards and are randomly chosen at the time of their publication on the celebrated friend’s wall.

Once installed on chrome you must enable the ' application HappyBirthday to publish gifts on your behalf. Then in the extension you can set options to use such phrases for greetings. Enjoy!

How to Post Status Longer Than 420 characters

Has your status ever been too complicated to describe in less than 420 characters? The maximum length of a status update on Facebook is currently 420 characters. If you exceed that number you will get this annoying error message:

“Status updates must be less than 420 characters. You have entered 804 characters here. Notes can be much longer. Would you like to edit and post your update as a Note instead?”

Sometimes you may have a lot to say but you don’t want to post it in a note. Well FacebookFlow is here to save the day! With this cool little loophole you can post as many characters as you want. This also means you can use some of our cool Status Art to spice up your status.

How it works:

All you have to do is “Upload a Photo” instead of sharing a status.

Step 1: Simply grab a photo off your hard drive, any photo you want to accompany your extremely long status update.

Step 2: Once you select your photo, you can write as much as you want! Part of your message will be covered up by a “See More” link, but its better than nothing.

They have named it as Operation Facebook.They have decided to take down facebook due to Privacy policies.In a press release they stated

Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.

Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your “privacy” settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you “delete” your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more “private” is also a delusion.Facebook knows more about you than your family.

Should You be Worried?

Auto Login For Asianet Dataline(ADL-METTLE Wire)

Asianet Dataline provides free downloads @ night from 2AM to 6Am or 8Am.
Using this free download time needs one to login @ 2am and to disconnect @ the end of the free time.it will be useful if there is anything which can automate the login. For this there are many methods and the easiest way is by using secure login addon in firefox

Using an Addon in firefox we can automate the login for ADL.
First save the username and password in firefox.(enable password saving in
frefox from Tools>>options>>security>>tick remember password)

install SECURE Login Addon for firefox from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-
US/firefox/addon/4429

Then after restarting firfox enter “about:config” in address bar
set the value of “extensions.secureLogin@blueimp.net.autoLogin” to true

In firefox go to Tools>>Options>>main set “show my Home page” in when
firefox Starts” and set home page in firefox to Google or Yahoo

Now For Automating the night Downloads

Create a task in task scheduler to run firefox @ 2:05AM

Click Create task, set the name and description, Select the Operating system you are using.

Select Triggers>> New>> Daily, set time and select ENABLED

Select action>> Browse to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe

Select Conditions Untick all the conditions

Select Settings>> Set Run on demand.

Now Click OK.

Check the task by right clicking the task and select RUN

After this make sure that you have configured an auto shutdown task at 6/8am, since there is no way to disconnect the internet at a specified time. (create a task with daily action of “c:\windows\system32\shutdown -s -f -t 00″)

Every time you connect to the broadband network, ADL requires you to login using a browser. You also need to keep this browser session open. Otherwise ADL automatically disconnects you from the broadband network.

Obviously this is a big hassle. Many times I have accidently closed the browser and right in the middle of a big download, my connection gets terminated. Also most of the time I want the Internet connectivity as soon as I login to my system.

This is where ADL Auto Login comes to the rescue. ADL Auto Login eliminates the need for an open browser session to keep you connected to Asianet broadband. It can be configured to run as soon as you login to Windows. You can also save your login credentials and ADL Auto Login will automatically authenticate you with Asianet servers.

Using ADL Auto Login you can login or logout from Asianet broadband servers at any time. It also displays the connection status in Windows system tray.

Asianet had migrated to a new system Mettle Wire few months back and here is how you can set up the Auto Login for night downloads.

For this you need the following

Python ( http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.6.4/python-2.6.4.msi)
JIT Scheduler ( http://www.download.com/JIT-Scheduler/3000-2084_4-10065163.html )
Login Script ( http://www.download.com/JIT-Scheduler/3000-2084_4-10065163.html ) – Thanks to Vijayaraj V R

First install Python to a location of your choice ( I used C:\login\Python ) Next extract the login script to C:\login. Open the login script with a text editor like Notepad and update the username and password. Do not use Microsoft Word as it may alter the file.

Now open JIT Scheduler and click the ‘New’ task button on top and enter the details as shown in the images below to login automatically at the specified time. Also repeat the process every 5 minutes in case you are automatically logged out by the system.

You may need to update the command in the first image depending on the location you installed Python and where you extracted the login script.

After creating the task, right click on the task and select ‘Task Properties’ and change the option in Window to Minimized in the System menu as shown in picture so that login script is run in the background.

Now you need to create another task to shutdown the system at 8 AM and can be done as shown below.

Login Script to automatically connect to your Asianet Dataline Internet connection

Asianet Dataline is an ISP in Kerala and they use a web browser based authentication system to log the user onto their network. One of their most popular plans the - Homenet 475 offers free unlimited downloads from 2AM to 8AM. Now if there was a way to turn on your system at 2AM, automatically login to Asianet and turn your download manager on and then shutdown at 8AM it would have been perfect. The only problem is that the http based authentication system makes it a bit unwieldy to automate. Well not really :-). We have created a bash script to automate this login process.

Features

- Automatically connect to Asianet Dataline without having to sign in via the browser.
- In startup and free mode the script will keep the connection alive.
- The script will automatically reconnect if connection breaks because of a power failure or a line problem.
- In free mode the script will call any related startup and shutdown scripts placed inside the ~/.auto-login/startup and ~/.auto-login/shutdown folders.

Setup Instructions

a) Copy script to your favorite scripts folder.
b) Edit script to update username and password with your Asianet login information.
c) Add script to your startup process. See different ways of using the script below to know more.
d) If you want to start and stop other applications at the time of starting the script then create a folder ~/.auto-login and inside that create sub-folders startup and shutdown. Place other scripts that have to be called during startup and shutdown of this script into the respective folders. Make sure that these scripts have their executable bit set.

Different ways of using the script

1) Add a shortcut to your task bar to launch the script with the parameter "auto". Use this shortcut to start the connection with one click and stop the connection with one click. Remember that the connection will time out if there is no activity. But that should not be a problem because you can connect again with a single click.
2) Add the script to your startup process with parameter "startup". This will keep the script running in the background and the script will keep the connection alive with keep-alive requests.
3) Add the script to your startup process with parameter "free". This will keep the script running in the background and the script will connect only during the free download hours and then it will keep the connection alive with keep-alive requests until the free time ends. When free time ends it will disconnect the connection. In this mode the script will also run any related startup and shutdown scripts placed inside the ~/.auto-login/startup and ~/.auto-login/shutdown folders.
