A Modern Girls Wedding

Wedding trends for 2013!!!

2013-01-28T23:39:00.005+11:00

Welcome to 2013 everyone!! We both hope this year will be wonderful for all of you!

Here at modern girls wedding we are not one to follow trends, we believe everyone should pick and choose for themselves but I could not help but notice all the ‘trends’ so here are a few for you. Inspiration comes from all different places so hopefully some of you lovely people can find some here or just have a good laugh!!

Food trucks/stations- As wedding receptions become more laid back in 2013 food stations will be popping up all over the place. Serving fun snack foods like popcorn, lollies, hot dogs even mashed potatoes. Even the good old ice cream trucks are set to be a popular addition to a relaxed reception. Probably not suited for a formal wedding in my opinion but each to their own

Floral or coloured wedding dresses- Apparently white is on the way out, taking its place is a range of coloured wedding dresses as well as floral print gowns. I’m assuming this is due to a few celebrities getting married in 2012 who said ido in a coloured gown! I really doubt they will take the place of white but I think if you’re after something different, colours are for you!!

Dresses with pockets- It would seem some designers have now suddenly felt the need to add pockets to wedding gowns making them functional as well as fashionable. What I’m wondering is why has it taken so long and what would you put in your wedding dress pocket???

Source: stylemepretty.com via Cassie on Pinterest

Bird themed weddings- I’m not too sure about this one....2012 saw an increase of birdcages used as centrepieces and instead of wishing wells but some people are suggesting that this idea will be taken even further with the use of nests and even eggs as decorations as well as favours. Bird themed invitations, place cards and bird shaped bridesmaid jewellery are said to make an appearance in 2013. Also taking this theme in my opinion a little too far, feathered heard pieces instead of veils....I will be keeping an eye out to see if this ‘trend’ takes off

Button bouquets- Not everyone is into flowers and while these lovely creations have been around for a while they are becoming more popular in 2013. They can also be more cost effective if you make them yourself and it’s something you can keep forever. Also a great option if you suffer from hay fever!!

Reception lounge- this was seen in 2012 but will be taken to a new level this year. People will be finding reception places with enough room to accommodate a lounge area near the dance floor where people can sit and relax with a few cocktails after dancing. Sounds pretty good to me!!

Broadcasting weddings online- With technology coming along in leaps and bounds, this one is going to seen everywhere in 2013. With many people having family and friends spread out all over the world this can be very useful. Some guests for various reasons will be unable to attend your wedding but you don’t want them to miss out on your amazing day so broadcasting your wedding ceremony as well as your reception online can be the way to share every special moment with your loved ones.

Groom spending –Wedding budgets are set to increase due to grooms splashing out some extra cash on things they want included in their day. While I love the thought of grooms becoming more involved with the planning process id be a bit worried ladies!

1920’s vintage themed weddings- Vintage has become a very popular wedding theme in the last few years and brides will be diving into the past to get inspiration from the roaring 1920’s. This is due to televisions shows such as Downtown Abbey and a remake of the Great Gatsby set to be released later this year. Long strands of Pearls, drop wasted gowns, soft lace and ivory tones as well as beaded head pieces instead of veils are what we will be seeing this year.

Camping style weddings ‘glamping’- this one is pretty self explanatory, with more relaxed celebrations becoming the first choice for a lot of couples it’s no surprise that this idea is becoming more and more popular. Especially when celebrities like Matthew McConaughey treated his wedding guests to 3 days of ‘glamping’. Imagine ultra-luxe safari style tents with furniture, cosy white fur rugs on the floor, outdoor seating with doormats at the front, heating, air con, electricity and high-end linens. No sleeping on the floor involved! Now that sounds like my kind of camping.

Top colour of 2013- Mint. With the colour mint being splashed around on the runways all around the world it’s no surprise some designers will be using it in their bridal lines. I quite like it, it’s soft and can be used with other colours such as ivory and white without standing out too much, so ladies if you want to add a little colour to your wedding, this year mint is it!

Well there you have it, the expected trends of 2013! I know I will be watching to see which of these take off and which of them crash and burn...only time will tell J

Keep true to your own style as well as yourself and your future spouse and you will have the best wedding ever! Happy Planning lovelies!

Hens party !!!!!

2012-12-18T20:01:00.004+11:00

I didn't want a Hens Party were you stay out late and get really drunk. I also have a lot of friends with little kids so it really wasn't a option, Plus if I invite them to my party that way it would have to be child friendly and they couldn't surprise me with a stripper ( I would have died if they had !!!!) Call me a prude or whatever, don't get me wrong i do enjoy a good strip show, but not when its thrust in my face if you know what i mean !

I am a non drink and non smoker and all I need for a good time is great company and a glass of water or OJ :)

I run my local crochet and knitting group and we have over 35 members

Due to the fact that I am not a millionaire, inviting all my ladies to my wedding was not an option :(

I decided that I would have a big party and celebrate that way.

Being the cheapo that I am, I made my own invitations and just bought colored paper to print them on. In total my invitations cost me $15 - trust me when I say that is a lot cheaper than getting them made !

I was asked by many of my guests if I wanted gifts - a bit of a background story - I have been with my Hubby to be for over 11 years so we have just about everything we need or want

I asked that no one was to buy gifts but some people can be very stubborn and insisted they get me something. I told them that a plate of cookies or slice would be a perfect item to bring - Some of the ladies in my group are AWESOME baker's so I knew they would cook up a storm (plus it helped with keeping the cost of the party down)

I bit the bullet and hired chairs and tables at a cost of $150 - If you can borrow chairs or tables i would say go for it, I had so many guests that organising that would have been a nightmare

I had plastic plates, knives, forks, spoons

THEME

I had the Mad Hatters afternoon T party as my theme and put on the invite that if the guests turned up with out something in their hair or on their head I would make them do something silly - I didn't tell them that i would never do that to them LOLOL but it got some excellent creativity with their hats and some even dressed up !

How to keep cost's down

Borrow chairs and tables

Make as much food as you can instead of hiring a caterer

Get friends to help out

Instead of gifts ask guests if they don't mind to bring a plate of food - some may think this is rude but if people offer, take it :)

Have the party at home

Shop around for best prices !!!

$1 or $2 stores are the best places to get plastic plates etc and also decorations

Games

Get as creative as you want !!!

I had just about run out of $$$ when it came to games, you can find HEAPS of items around the house to use for games

Peg game

You will need

heaps of clothes pegs - 4-5 per guest

1 pen

a piece of paper with he alphabet on it - this is for your use to call out the alphabet in a random order, when you have called out a letter cross it off

How to play

randomly call out a letter of the alphabet

Example - D - the guests have to yell out a word starting with G that is RELATED To a wedding - Answer could be Dress

Example - W - Wedding

Example - S - Sex - you will have some cheeky guest so get ready for all types of answers LOLOL

So when a guest calls out a correct answer they get a peg

Guest with the most pegs wins

This game can work with many party's - Baby Showers - Birthdays etc

To go with the peg game, when guests arrive give them 2 pegs, tell them that they are not aloud to CROSS THEIR LEGS - this could be sitting down or standing up

At first no one will cross their legs but with in 15 minuted they will relax and forget and BAM thats when you strike and take 1 of their pegs.

Sammy from Art V's Cupcake made my AWESOME AWESOME cupcakes !!!!

Is pink the new white???

2012-10-26T02:59:00.002+11:00

I don't know about you but I got a bit of a surprise when I saw Jessica Biel's pink wedding dress when she finally married Justin Timberlake last week!!! She wore a custom, strapless petal pink coloured Giambattista Valli haute couture gown made of silk mousseline and silk organza. Her veil which consisted of her mothers heirloom pearls was also created for her by Giambattista Valli. Its about time the poor girl got her wedding day, she has waited long enough but I know I would wait for a bit of Justin too! :)

Although she is not the first celebrity to wear pink on her big day, it seems to be a favourite amongst the fashionable celebs! Gwen Stefani wore a custom made pink and white.silk faille wedding dress and an antique lace veil both made by John Galliano and Resse Witherspoon was also pretty in pink when she married Jim Toth last year. She wore a custom designed Monique Lhuillier blush-hued gown with a Chantilly lace corset bodice and a full tulle A-line skirt. Also aussie actress Portia de Rossi wore a backless pink dress by Zac Ponsen with a cinderella tutu for her backyard wedding to Ellen De Generes in 2008.

So with so many celebs going down the coloured dress road what do you think? would you be brave enough to wear pink or any other colour on your big day? Alot of wedding gown stores are keeping coloured dresses in stock and the colours available these days are beautiful so why not try one on for size when your dress shopping! Just a little food for thought!

Happy coloured dress shopping ladies!!

Reception v Celebrations!!

2012-10-18T00:58:00.000+11:00

With things becoming less formal so many new types of wedding celebrations are popping up! I’ve been lucky enough to attend 2 very different weddings in the past few months and it got me thinking about the different options available to brides and grooms these days.

The first wedding I attended was a very formal wedding with a sit down 3 course meal in a 5 star resort in Cairns, the second was an informal ceremony in a local park followed by a backyard celebration. This as you can imagine raised a few eyebrows with people I spoke to and I must admit I was very interested in how this wedding would work as it was the first one like it I had been invited to. In the end they were both beautiful weddings but for very different reasons and I’m sure the planning was also very different but it got me wondering when did we become so judgemental? When it comes to weddings and what is right and wrong everyone has an opinion but I have noticed (and I am guilty of this myself) that people are quick to comment and share their sometimes harsh opinions. It’s a privilege to be invited to someone’s wedding but it can be easy to lose sight of this when we have to buy a new outfit or spend hours trolling the internet for flights or accommodation. Not to mention buying a present or putting money in a wishing well...that in its self deserves a whole blog post.....

So basically what we’re trying to say is things are changing and despite what grandma thinks there is no such thing as right or wrong when it comes to weddings!! So before you start judging, think about this...how would you feel if you heard someone saying mean things about your wedding day, I know I’d be devastated because if you ask me my wedding was the best wedding in the history of the universe... J

For the future brides reading this, don’t be scared to put your personality into the planning and do what you want, destination, formal, backyard or religious it’s totally up to you and don’t pay any attention to the haters....some people are just plain jealous of you or they can’t be pleased, so please yourself and your future husband!!

Play nice ladies and always think of other people before voicing your thoughts and as always, happy planning!!!

“Why should I choose a professional photographer?”

2012-10-15T21:33:00.001+11:00

“Why should I choose a professional photographer?”

There’s nothing in the rule book that says you have to hire the services of a professional photographer for your special day, but there are some very important things to consider if you decide not to. When organizing a wedding, it’s quite normal to focus on the things that will add to the pomp and ceremony of the occasion, but sometimes, we can go a bit overboard with the stretch Hummer or the Sydney Harbour cruise and blow the budget.

It’s then that we start looking for cheaper alternatives for those products or services we haven’t yet booked, and often end up trying to cut corners. Wedding photography is a perfect example of a service that people try to get cheaply because they've over spent on something like a horse and carriage. Now, I’m not saying for a moment that a horse and carriage or a stretch Hummer are not great accessories to have on your big day, but they’re not going to be there for you to look back at in 20 years time like your photos will be.

You see, as unimportant as your wedding photographer may seem in the bigger scheme of things, it’s actually he or she that will be providing you with one of the most important services on your wedding day. Without a wedding photographer, you won’t have any memories of your special day, and of course, no one will get to see the horse and carriage or the magnificent view of Sydney Harbour either.

Having said all that, there might just be a way around it!!! There are many people who think that Uncle Bill can quite easily take the photos of their big day because he has “a good camera.” And, it’s true, a good quality camera will give you good photos, but the reality is, the camera is only as good as the photographer! So, whilst Uncle Bill will save you a few dollars in the short term, you might end up being very disappointed in the long term. Why? We’ve listed some reasons below:

- It’s highly unlikely that Uncle Bill can edit your photos, so there could be a lot of red eye and other quality issues.

- Uncle Bill probably won’t be able to capture those “special” photos that will create lifelong memories.

- Uncle Bill probably won’t have extra lighting and accessories to improve the quality of your photos.

- Quite often, Uncle Bill will only take photos of the people on his side of the family........oops!

- And of course, as Uncle Bill indulges in a few beers, the quality of your photos will probably won’t be what you had hoped for.

In reality, owning a Porsche doesn't make you a racing car driver, and owning “a good” camera doesn't make you a photographer. Having said that, if you do decide to hire the services of a professional wedding photographer, it’s important to view some samples of their work before you agree to let them take your photos. We’ll talk more about that in our next blog.

Until then, prepare early, and remember, it’s the photos that will still be there in 30 years!

My wedding pictures!

2012-08-21T03:07:00.000+10:00

Hello Ladies

I thought id share some of my wedding pictures from my amazing day with you! You will now be able to put a face to one half of a modern girls wedding!!

Our ceremony was held at the Art Gallery in Wollongong and our reception was held at City Beach function centre in Wollongong.

I didn't really have a theme, I just picked what I liked. My fiancée is in the army and was deployed to Afghanistan for most of the planning (I think he was grateful for this..lol ) but I was lucky enough to have amazing bridesmaids and friends who helped me plan our whole wedding in 5 months!!
The best piece of advice i can give you is to have what you want, at the end of the day, its your day!! Dont let others pressure you into anything regardless of who is paying. You want to remember your day for the right reasons!

I hope you all enjoy my pictures as much as i enjoyed my day!!

Happy Planning

Steve Johnston from Studio8 Photography will be writing regular blogs relating to wedding photography and here is his first.

There are a number of things you should consider when selecting your wedding photographer, but one of the most important is whether your photos will be subject to copyright. This is one of the first questions you should ask a potential photographer. It is still very common for a large majority of wedding photographers to copyright your wedding photos. This means that that you will receive your wedding photos once you have paid for them, but if you require additional copies, they will make you pay extra for them. Many photographers see this as an ongoing income source, however, it can become extremely expensive and if the photographer goes out of business, you may never be able to arrange copies of your treasured memories. "Buyer beware!!!" This is never something you will have to worry about with Studio8 Photography, where all of our photography is “Copyright free.”

Photograpy with Steve from Studio8 Photography

2012-06-11T10:37:00.002+10:00

Thank you to the Wonderful Steve from Studio8 Photography for sharing his knowledge and tips for choosing your wedding photographer.
You can view Steve's website at http://www.studio8photography.com.au/

- How long have you been a wedding photographer?

We have been producing professional photography since 2004.

- How long in advance should a client contact you to discuss their wedding photo's

Although quite a few of our bookings come at relatively short notice, it’s better to book as far in advance as possible to secure your date. This is particularly important from September to March, as these are extremely popular months for weddings. Booking the photographer should be one of the early priorities like the church or ceremony location and reception venue. You don’t want to accept an average photographer because all of the good ones are already booked.

- Do you charge any extra for photos on a disk?

All of our packages include the photos on disc. We don’t charge any extra and very importantly, all of our photography is “free from copyright,” which means the married couple can make as many copies of their photos as they like at no additional cost. This is extremely rare among wedding photographers, but we feel very strongly that people should “own the rights” to their photos once they’ve paid for them.

- What do you recommend people look for when they choose a wedding photographer?

There are a number of key points people need to consider when choosing a wedding photographer.

- Will they place copyright on your photos? The last thing you want is to pay good money for your photos, only to be told you’ll need to pay for copies. This is extremely common in the industry!!! Be aware!!!

- Make sure you will be receiving “all” of your photos from the day and not just a “selection.”

- Be sure to view samples of a photographers work. Do they have a website where you can view their work? If not, it suggests they are more hobbyists than professionals. All professional photographers should have a website!!! A Facebook page is also an important addition, as it allows you to see a greater variety of the photographers work.

- Is the photo editing included in their package price, or will you have to pay an additional charge? You want to be sure that you are not required to pay more to have your photos edited, as it can become quite costly.

- Be certain that your deposit will be deducted from the final balance and isn’t just a “non refundable” holding deposit. Once again, this is not uncommon among some photographers.

There are many other hints and tips to choosing a wedding photographer, which I will be happy to expand on down the track.

- Is it important to have a list of the type of photos you want or do you let the photographer take the lead?

Having an idea of what type of photos you would like is an advantage, but a good photographer will always have ideas to best maximise your location, etc. Just be sure you view samples of their work prior to confirming your booking. The last thing you want are photos that look like they’ve just been taken in the 1980’s!!!

Do you, or don’t you when it comes to online shopping for your wedding??

2012-06-08T19:00:00.000+10:00

Online shopping seems to be a busy girl’s best friend these days but when it comes to your wedding, how far is too far?? I know every girl loves a good bargain but where do you draw the line and what are the risks involved with doing your wedding shopping online....

I don’t know about you, but I have heard numerous horror stories from friends and on some wedding websites about how a bride brought a ‘designer’ wedding gown for a quarter of the price from some online wedding store on the other side of the world...hhhmmmmm. Only to be devastated when it arrived and

a) It looked nothing like the picture

b) The material was poor quality

c) It was the wrong size and didn’t fit at all

d) It was the wrong colour

e) The stitching wasn’t finished and the seams were coming apart

f) The dress is see through...no I’m not kidding

g) The dress doesn’t show up all.....

Do you see where I’m going with this?? If you only listen to one piece of advice we give you, then this is it! DO NOT BUY YOUR WEDDING GOWN ONLINE!!!!! I know your inbuilt bargain hunter will be trying to convince you this is a good idea, but trust me it’s not and if you’re still determined to buy a cheap wedding dress, keep an eye out for the sales rack, most wedding dress stores have them and at least you can see beforehand what you are paying for!

Buying things like favours, invitation and place card paper, costume jewellery and decorations online in my opinion are fine, if you can save yourself some money then go for it, but like you normally would in stores, shop around! There are heaps of great secure online wedding stores and if you sign up to their email alerts you will be notified of when they are having sales, so it’s a win win! Below is a list of some of the ones we have used.

If you do decide to do the bulk of your shopping online, just be careful and shop with caution. Keep in mind most places charge a delivery fee so we suggest buying breakable items like champagne flutes and cake knifes from a real store. The delivery fees can get crazy expensive! I know how easy it can be to get caught up in the wedding planning bubble but always try to use your common sense! If something online looks too good to be true, then it probably is! Last but not least, be very careful who you give your credit card details too, if it’s not a secure website then do not put in your details. This seems like a no brainer but it’s easy to be fooled.

So ladies shop with caution, but remember to have fun! Happy Shopping J

I don’t want your money honey.....

2012-05-23T15:05:00.003+10:00

Tradition states that the parents of the bride pick up the bill for their little girls big day, but like everything else wedding, this has changed too. Some modern brides are choosing to pay for their own wedding so among other reasons, they get all the say. This sounds great in theory but it can also cause some ruffling of feathers within the family. Cue the over bearing, pushing mother/mother in law. Now I know not everyone’s mother or in laws are like this but let’s face it, we have all heard the stories of the mothers throwing tantrums because they can’t invite their best friend from bingo that you have never met or the judgemental comments over your choice in food and alcohol. But regardless of your decision, work it out early so there are not issues later on. This will also help you work out your budget. I can’t stress how important it is to have this worked out as early as possible.

Other people that you need to talk money with are your bridal party. Etiquette dictates that the bride and groom pay for everything they will need for the day but like everything else this is changing too. It’s more common these days for the bride and groom to split the costs with the bridal party. I suggest having this conversation before you start shopping. Work out what amount people are willing to pay and go from there. That way everyone knows where they stand up front and there will be not issues. There are real life stories all over wedding forums about brides who are pissed off with the bridesmaids or bridesmaids who are refusing to pay for a dress they don’t like! Apparently they didn’t have the talk....lol

I may get shot down for saying this but in my opinion if you do take money from parents then i think they should get a small say in a few things. I’m not saying give them full rein but a little give and take can go a long way to making your wedding a happy experience for everyone. It can be a very emotional experience for everyone especially your parents or guardians so keep that in mind. If you do decide to accept help from people make sure you are comfortable with it, you don’t need the extra stress or guilt.

So ladies whether you decide to go it alone or accept help from family remember what we always say here, enjoy the experience and do whatever you can to make it easy on yourself!

Happy planning

Wedding Themes, useful or useless?

2012-05-17T02:21:00.001+10:00

Sooooooo whats your wedding theme? This was one of the first questions I was asked after people found out I was getting married. I was like WTF?? A wedding theme? Really? Here I was thinking you just pick what you like, apparently I was wrong according to a fellow bride.... eeekkk! Lol Planning a wedding can be stressful to say the least so why do we put extra pressure on ourselves to stick to a theme? Before you start thinking pirate costumes or pink taffeta as far as the eye can see take a look at the list of tasteful ideas that I have put together for you. Keep in mind everything is open to interpretation so really the only limit is your imagination and of course your budget. You can have a little or a lot depending on your taste BUT don’t feel you need to have a theme just because everyone else is!

Colour- this is the most common one, pick a colour and match everything to it. Usually it’s the colour of the bridesmaid dresses. Multiple colours are also an option

Seasonal- Depending on what time of the year you’re getting hitched, using the season as a theme is an option-

Winter- depending on where on earth you live winter can mean a white wedding wonderland

Summer- a beach wedding theme is great for a summer wedding

Spring- When we think of spring we think of flowers, so why not get married in a beautiful garden in the sunshine

Autumn- Is very versatile, it’s still warm enough to get married outside and when we think of autumn we think of earthy tones, so if you’re into browns and reds this is a great season to use for inspiration

Diamonds and Pearls- this is my personal favourite. It’s so extensive that you could do almost anything. If you’re like me and love your bling, this is the theme for you

Vintage- This one is always popular. Like the old saying, ‘what’s old is new again’ brides can wear vintage or vintage inspired dresses with lots of lace and pearls and the groom can wear tails and a top hat. You can get very specific by picking a time period in which you style everything around

Places- Planning your wedding around your favourite destination is an option if you can’t have your wedding there. Why not plan a Vegas style wedding or a Disney land theme wedding (if your game!)Other options are India, Africa, France or stick to what you know, have an Australian themed wedding

Animals- this one can be a bit out of the ordinary but using butterflies or doves as your inspiration can give you a very light and lovely theme

Flowers- Cherry blossoms seem to be trending on some wedding sites at the moment but there’s always the good old rose or Lilly. Again your options are endless

I could go on forever but this covers the basics. I hope I have given you some direction or at the very least, something to think about. If I have missed any major ones please feel free to comment or if you have had your wedding and I haven’t mentioned your theme please share with us!

Until next time ladies, happy planning and remember to enjoy the experience. If it all gets too much there is always wine and chocolate to get you through!!

Winter Wonderland!!

2012-05-05T02:02:00.000+10:00

Do you want the wedding of your dreams but you don't have a million dollars?? Getting married in winter could be the solution. In Australia, winter isn't the normal wedding season so most reception places and wedding suppliers offer cheaper packages! So shop around, its the best time of year to get more bang for your buck!

BUT if your getting married in the winter time, choose your dress carefully, there's nothing that annoys me more than a winter bride dressed in a skimpy dress!! Dress for the season, you can get some amazing winter wedding dresses (see below) or shawls to keep you warm! You don't want to look back on your winter wedding day and remember how cold you were in your strapless dress!!! Also same goes for your bridesmaids, don't be a bridezilla and make them freeze their little butts off because you wanted them in cocktail dresses!! Common sense is all im asking for ladies!

Enjoy the wedding winter wonderland we have put together for you!
