Science is the explanation of the physical world, while engineering encompasses applications of science to achieve results. Thus, what we have learned about the environment by trial and error has incrementally grown into what is now standard practice of environmental science and engineering. This heuristically attained knowledge has come at a great cost in terms of the loss of lives and diseases associated with mistakes, poor decisions (at least in retrospect), and the lack of appreciation of environmental effects.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The &#39;&#39;environmental movement&#39;&#39; is a relatively young one. The emblematic works of Rachel Carson, Barry Commoner, and others in the 1960s were seen by many as mere straws in the wind. The growing environmental awareness was certainly not limited to the academic and scientific communities. Popular culture was also coming to appreciate the concept of &#39;&#39;spaceship earth,&#39;&#39; i.e. that our planet consisted of a finite life support system and that our air, water, food, soil, and ecosystems were not infinitely elastic in their ability to absorb humanity&#39;s willful disregard. The poetry and music of the time expressed these fears and called for a new respect for the environment. The environmental movement was not a unique enterprise, but was interwoven into growing protests about the war in Vietnam, civil rights, and a general discomfort with the &#39;&#39;establishment.&#39;&#39; The petrochemical industry, the military, and capitalism were coming under increased scrutiny and skepticism.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The momentum of the petrochemical revolution following World War II was seemingly unstoppable. However, much of the progress we now take as given was the result of those who agitated against the status quo and refused to accept the paradigms of their time. In fact, we provide evidence of the validity of some of these early environmentalists&#39; causes. A handful of cases were defining moments in the progress in protecting public health and the environment. It seems that every major piece of environmental legislation was preceded by an environmental disaster precipitated from mistakes, mishaps, and misdeeds. Amendments to the Clean Air Act resulted from deadly episodes such as were experienced in Donora, Pennsylvania and London, UK. Hazardous waste legislation came about after public outcries concerning Love Canal in New York state. &#39;&#39;Right-to-Know&#39;&#39; legislation worldwide grew from the disaster at Bhopal, India. Oil spill and waste contingency plans were strengthened following the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska. International energy policies changed, with growing anti-nuclear power sentiments, following the near disaster at Three Mile Island in the United States and the actual catastrophe at Chernobyl in Ukraine. Most recently, engineering and public health emergency response planning has been completely revamped in response to the events of September 11, 2001.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Certainly these can all be classified as &#39;&#39;environmental&#39;&#39; problems, but they represent new, societal paradigms as well. That is the tricky part of dealing with emerging technologies, including biotechnologies. Contemporary society has a way of thrusting problems upon us. Ironically, society demands the promotion of new and better things and processes, simultaneously demanding that scientists, engineers, physicians, and others in the scientific community sufficiently control the consequences of the very same technologies that members of society insist we use. For example, society may demand, reasonably or unreasonably, certain food characteristics (higher nutrition, less fat, attractive color). They may be quite happy with a product, until it is found to have actual or perceived negative characteristics. For example, the public may be pleased that the price of strawberries remains low and the texture of a high quality until they find out that the plants have been genetically altered to resist frost damage. However, this engineered characteristic could have been the principal driver for the lower price and better texture. Likewise, cleanup of polluted waters and sediments can benefit from genetically altered bacteria and fungi to break down some very persistent contaminants, but the public may fear potential problems if these microbes somehow escape their intended use and find their way into unplanned components of the food chain. Medicinal practice, green revolution and the advancement in biotechnology has made the presence of biology felt by the common man.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The key to success in Biology is hard work. It means management of time and energy. Biology is a vast subject which requires a great and clear-cut understanding of each topic. Trying to cram notes will never lead to success unless rigorous effort is made in comprehending them. Being a very vast subject, developing interest in it is very important for success. One must have a passion for nature, to understand how things have developed and marvel at the beauty of nature.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;To do well at biology, both the quantity and quality of time spent on it are important. Even though other industries seem to be losing jobs, clean energy keeps on growing.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, the solar industry will have a 26% job growth rate in 2011. The solar industry is creating jobs faster than the US economy (which is only looking at a 2% increase). SEIA found that more than half of the US solar firms expect to add jobs while less than 2% expected to lay workers off. The fastest growing jobs in this field are for installers and electricians.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Thanks to the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), the geothermal energy industry will also have a great 2011. The projects that have been jump started by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act should add more than 3000 jobs in 2011. These jobs will be added mostly in California and Nevada. The great thing is that almost 1000 different people are involved in one geothermal project according to the Geothermal Energy Association. These projects put a lot of people to work and employ welders, mechanics, pipe fitters, plumbers, machinists, electricians, carpenters, construction and drilling equipment operators, surveyors, architects, designers, HVAC technicians, geologists, hydrologists, and engineers. This is just a short list of the jobs that these projects create. Since these projects have long lead times, most of the projects have not been able to start yet (or if they have, they have just started) and will be done in 2011.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;As of June 2010, the biorefinery industry accounted for more than 40,000 jobs according to the Biotechnology Industry Organization. By 2022, the commercialization of biofuels is expected to create another 800,000 new jobs. Jobs in this industry include laborers, material movers, mixing machine setters, shipping and receiving clerks, and chemical equipment operators.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Right now, hydropower is the industry that has the most capacity working right now. Currently, there are 2 - 3 workers per megawatt of capacity. With 100,000 MW of hydropower capacity currently being generated, the hydropower industry accounts for 200,000 - 300,000 jobs. Now, depending on how the states award clean energy (through RES&#39;s), you can easily be adding anywhere from a half a million to over 1.4 million jobs in the upcoming years! Jobs in this industry range from component manufacturing, project construction, regulatory studies, licensing, design, project commissioning and model testing.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;It would be great to be able to look into a crystal ball to see how exactly the renewable energy job market will be for the next couple of years. Depending on the industry, you are seeing projections for next year all the way up to 2025. About a hundred years ago, a pharmacist from France used an innovative method which led to a breakthrough in aromatherapy techniques. In recent years, under the strong promotion by Sathelyne Group, Bel&#39;Air aromatherapy came into being to benefit many consumers.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;For centuries, people have experienced and have come to recognise that essential oils have many benefits. Essential oils can help to combat bacteria and other diseases, repel mosquitoes, prevent tooth decay, fight oxidisation, inflammation and even enhance the immune system, calm nerves, etc.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;But with so many types of essential oils around, which essential oils will benefit you? Which are the safest? These are questions that researchers are still unable to answer exactly.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Since 2002 when Bel&#39;Air set up our factory in France, there has been interest in testing the safety and effectiveness of our essential oils. With these concerns in mind, Bel&#39;Air worked closely with professor Tsai from Taiwan National Yang Ming University in setting up our very own Bel&#39;Air Bio-tech Research Centre. Professor Tsai Ying Chieh is head of Taiwan National Yang Ming Biotechnology Department and head of Taiwan National Yang Ming University Medical Science Department. He expressed that his interest in aromatherapy research is enhanced by the fact that research and academic publications in this field are scarce. The Bel&#39;Air Bio-tech Research Centre hopes to strengthen the foundation of botanic essential oil research and further the investigation of essential oils and their various properties, effects and benefits. Professor Tsai also hopes to share knowledge with international institutions and publish academic papers. At the same time, he aims to educate the public on aromatherapy.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The Effects of Essential Oils on Micro-organisms Present in the Air&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Between August 2000 and September 2002, Bel&#39;Air Bio-tech Research Centre carried out a research program to determine whether Green tea essential oil, Ginseng essential oil, Eucalyptus essential oil and Lavender essential oil have an influence on the amount of micro-organism (mold, yeast, fungus, bacteria) in the air. The researchers conducted tests on Green Tea essential oil, Ginseng essential oil, Eucalyptus essential oil and Lavender essential oil. They burned these 4 types of essential oils in a sealed room, and recorded readings at different time intervals. Readings were taken at the beginning of experiment (0 min), during the experiment (30, 50, 70, 90 mins) and after the experiment (30, 60, 90,120,150,180,210 mins). The experiment was repeated several times based on a sample of 500 litres of air. The experiment results proved that:&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Green Tea has 90% effectiveness in killing bacteria; and 61% effectiveness in killing fungus. &lt;BR&gt;Ginseng has 90% effectiveness in killing bacteria; and 62% effectiveness in killing fungus. &lt;BR&gt;Eucalyptus has 52% and 48% effectiveness respectively, as pertaining to the items above. &lt;BR&gt;Lavender has 66% and 71% effectiveness respectively, as pertaining to the items above. &lt;BR&gt;Professor Tsai expressed excitement and interest in such results, because the experiment proved that Sathelyne Bel&#39;Air&#39;s aromatherapy products indeed could combat micro-organism in the air, thus purifying the air. He also said that although the effectiveness figures for fungus seem low, but that is desirable because this would mean that it would not be harmful to the body.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;After obtaining such positive and encouraging results, Bel&#39;Air has worked even harder to carry out the 2nd experiment. This program made detailed analysis and records of the chemical compositions of these 5 essential oils, and tests were done to determine their chemical and biological safety.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Professor Tsai carefully selected Ginseng, Green Tea, Green Bamboo, Lotus and Eucalyptus as the 5 essential oils for the experiment. The reason for such a selection was because the 1st four essential oils are plants from the East, of which not enough researches had been carried out in the West. The selection of Eucalyptus was to act as a test reference for the other 4.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Chemical and Biological Safety Experiment&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The 2nd experiment went through the following steps:&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Using GC-MS to analyse the chemical composition of these 5 essential oils. &lt;BR&gt;Based on their individual chemical compositions, analysis was done to determine the safety for use of essential oils. &lt;BR&gt;Using GC_MS to determine the after effects of these essential oils, whether any by-products or toxins were produced in the combustion process. &lt;BR&gt;Using Ames test to test the before and after changes of these essential oils.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Using skin cells, fat cells and HepG2cancer cells to determine essential oils effects.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Find out what effects these essential oils have in combating bacteria and killing micro-organism such as mold, yeast and fungus (MIC). &lt;BR&gt;The 2nd experiment results proved that these essential oils have compositions that are mild, low in toxins, do not irritate skin and have low light-sensitivity. The Ames test also proved that these essential oils do no go through major changes before and after the combustion process. What is more encouraging is that before the test, these essential oils already contained beneficial compositions, but after the test, these beneficial compositions diffused into the air and these are what the body needs exactly. Florida, long known for oranges, beaches and a relatively temperate year-round climate, is increasingly becoming home to biotechnology companies working to develop breakthroughs in areas such as health care, agriculture, food and the environment. The state, which has been wooing companies that some say could ultimately bring thousands of jobs, is simultaneously working to enhance STEM degree programs and facilities at its public universities.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math. The State University System announced a New Florida Initiative that would put $1.75 billion over the course of five years toward STEM degree efforts and produce graduates who could help improve business, health care, development and education. The plan is to help Florida enhance a globally competitive &quot;knowledge and innovation&quot; economy that&#39;s sustainable, the Initiative website suggests.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Florida isn&#39;t alone in its efforts to lure biotechs, according to a June 2010 Palm Beach Post article on tcpalm.com. The state is, however, already home to a growing number of biotechs in the Tampa and Palm Beach County areas alone. The New Florida Initiative would in part align state colleges and universities with new and existing firms where STEM degree students might carry out research and ultimately find work. A January 2010 Initiative report pointed toward &quot;knowledge economy&quot; college towns such as those in North Carolina, where a declining agricultural economy was reshaped by strategic alliances and investments, and Ann Arbor, Mich., where a state university employs 30,000 people and the economy is becoming more high-tech.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Already, a STEM degree-producing public university in Tampa has announced that it&#39;s helping Maine-based Jackson Laboratory to find an alternate location to its initial $260 million-plus Collier County choice. Jackson Laboratory produces genetically engineered mice and conducts health care research and, with the university, is now seeking space in the Tampa area as well as near Sarasota to the south. Scripps Research Institute in Palm Beach County went through a similar process before the New Florida Initiative was borne and Scripps settled in near a state university.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Palm Beach County in 2005 spent more than $151 million on a 1,919-acre former citrus grove west of Palm Beach Gardens for a research park that Scripps Research Institute was expected to anchor, a Palm Beach Post article suggested. Environmentalists sued, and the county ended up with a $6.5 million a year debt and water lines extending to a vacant property for which it paid $60 million, a Palm Beach Post article noted. Scripps ended up with a 30-acre base in a town of a Jupiter community that the US Environmental Protection Agency considers &quot;Smart Growth.&quot;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Abacoa, as this community is known, is a community of residences and businesses that&#39;s linked in many places by recreational paths and that, according to the EPA, takes pressure off the Everglades. In addition to the STEM degree-offering public university campus here, Germany&#39;s Max Planck Society is joining Scripps, and Scripps itself has created a spin-off company known as cuRNA. By 2015, Scripps expects that its employees are to grow to 545, an article in the Palm Beach Post suggested. There are 70 acres on an adjacent piece of property on which Scripps can expand, the research institute&#39;s website shows.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The Tampa university already has established partnerships with research facilities in St. Petersburg and in Tampa outside of its campus. On campus, the university has broken ground on an 87-acre research park, where the first phase is expected to cost $40 million, the institution&#39;s website suggests. The park would serve as a hub in the area for research in STEM degree and entrepreneurship subjects, its website suggests.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The New Florida Initiative by 2015 expects to produce an additional 25,000 college and university degree-holders and add 2,500 new faculty members who bring with them another $500 million in research money and more. The state would be spending double the amount it&#39;s been providing to public universities, its website suggests. Also according to the website, colleges and universities would be able to put some of the money toward expanding science degrees and building up their campuses. Since this field is so varied (clinical diagnostics sales, laboratory sales, pathology sales, imaging sales, biotechnology sales, medical device sales, pharmaceutical sales, healthcare IT, medical software sales, surgical sales, and more), you do need a working knowledge of science and medical technology to be successful.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;But the real (and maybe unexpected) answer to the degree question is: If you have sales experience, almost any college degree will translate for most jobs at most companies. Personality, skills, and experience make up a lot of what health care sales managers are looking for. Medical sales managers want to see proof you can produce results, and you can learn the medical and technical knowledge you need for the job on your own. (And you&#39;ll be learning new technology, procedures, and equipment almost constantly, anyway.)&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Having said that, the very best degrees are: biology, chemistry, zoology, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular, health care, kinesiology, and sports medicine. If you can combine a technical/science degree like these with sales experience, then you&#39;re in a pretty good spot. If you&#39;ve added some business classes to these, you&#39;re even better off.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;A lesser, but still very good, position in the job market would be the possession of a business degree with a decent number of science classes (maybe a minor).&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;If you&#39;re in the market for a medical sales job and you don&#39;t have the &quot;best&quot; degree combination, you can improve your chances by job shadowing someone in your chosen field, and creating a 30/60/90-day plan for the interview that shows the hiring manager you are approaching the job with knowledge and a plan.
