Google has been busy lately! If you’ve noticed your traffic wobbling or your stats looking a bit different, don't panic—it’s not just you. Between February and March 2026, Google rolled out some significant updates that are changing the game for bloggers.

The good news? These updates actually favour the way we blog: with personality, real experience, and a focus on being helpful.

Here is the simple, jargon-free breakdown of what’s happened and how to keep your blog growing.

In February, Google released a core update specifically for Google Discover (that feed of articles you see on your phone's Google app).

What changed: Google is now prioritising "local" and "expert" content.

What it means for you: If you’re a British blogger writing about things happening in the UK, you’re more likely to show up for UK readers.

The "Anti-Clickbait" rule: They’ve cracked down on sensationalist headlines. If your title sounds like a tabloid "shocker," it might get hidden. Keep it honest and clear!

The March 2026 "Information Gain" Core Update

This was a big one. The main theme for March was something called "Information Gain."

What it is: Google is looking for new information. If you just rewrite what the top 10 results already say, Google might see your post as "extra noise."

How to win: Add your own spin! If you’re reviewing a book, don't just summarise the plot—tell us how it made you feel or show us a photo of your dog reading it with you. If you’re sharing a recipe, tell us about the time you burnt the first batch. That first-hand experience is your SEO superpower.

3 Simple Steps to Grow Right Now

Be Real (E-E-A-T): Google loves "Experience." Make sure your "About" page is up to date and that you use "I" and "me" in your posts. Show that a real human (with real opinions!) is behind the keyboard.

Focus on Your Niche: Instead of writing about everything, try to go deep into your favourite topics. If you love budget beauty, write five connected posts about it. This builds "Topical Authority," which Google currently loves.

Speed Up: Technical bits can be scary, but try to keep your images small so your site loads quickly. A fast site is a happy site in Google's eyes!

I recently had the pleasure of trying out the 7 Days Happy Sea Calf Face Mask, which was a lovely gift from my son. It certainly provided a fair bit of entertainment for the whole family; once I applied it, we quickly realised it wasn't just a standard sheet mask—it’s a full animal-print mask!

This "Happy Sea Calf" (which is essentially a cute little seal) is part of a wider collection from 7 Days. The range features an entire zoo of different animals, with each character targeting a specific skincare concern.

Performance and Results This particular mask is designed for deep hydration, promising a moisture boost for tired or dry skin. I am happy to report that it absolutely delivered on its claims. After leaving it on for the recommended time, my skin felt notably smoother, plumped, and thoroughly hydrated. It didn’t leave any sticky residue and the serum absorbed beautifully.

The Verdict If you are looking for an affordable, effective sheet mask to add a touch of "pamper time" to your evening, this is a fantastic option. It strikes a great balance between being effective and just plain fun. I’m certainly intrigued by the rest of the series now and would be very interested to see if the other animals in the collection perform just as well.

It's a brilliant little find—perfect for a bit of self-care or even as a quirky stocking filler for someone who doesn't take their beauty routine too seriously!

Have you ever wondered if knowing the future would be a gift or a total curse? In today’s post, I’m diving into my review of Three Days Earlier by Lynn Walker, a gripping thriller I picked up for my "Clock Reading Challenge."

The book synopsis for Three Days Earlier by Lynn Walker

Rachel Sharpe sees things. Dreadful things. When she locks eyes with someone, it hits her like a jolt of electricity—an ominous sense of impending doom for that person. She doesn’t always know what tragedy will strike them, only that it will be terrible.

To survive, Rachel avoids eye contact at all costs and keeps relationships limited to a few “safe” people—and her tracking dog, Ruby. She thought Aaron, a man she couldn’t resist, might be safe too, until she actually sees the tumor behind his eyes. Three months later, he is dead from brain cancer.

Now Rachel is panicked. What if she didn’t sense Aaron’s cancer—what if she caused it?

Then comes her most chilling vision yet: the busser at a local restaurant is stalking women. Three weeks later, a woman last seen outside that same restaurant disappears.

A Four-Star Page-Turner: I picked this up for my "Clock Reading Challenge" and ended up really getting into it. It starts with a slow burn but truly takes off—I just had to know what happened!
The Weight of ESP: Our protagonist, Rachel, has premonitions triggered by touch or eye contact. They are rarely happy, leading her to live a detached life filled with guilt—especially after she "sees" her boyfriend’s illness before he passes away.
A New Kind of Vision: The plot thickens when Rachel has a dark premonition about a restaurant worker intending to do harm. When a woman goes missing shortly after, Rachel has to decide if she can finally use her powers to help instead of just watching tragedy unfold.
Realistic Relationships: I loved the portrayal of her father and a local policeman. Unlike many "superhero" stories, this book explores the genuine burden and repercussions that having a "gifted" family member places on loved ones.
Search and Rescue Element: For the animal lovers out there, Rachel has a dog named Ruby who is a search and rescue dog. Following the scent-tracking and rescue elements was a really interesting addition to the story.
Dual Perspectives & Dark Twists: The story shifts between Rachel and a very disturbed character named Patrick, a parolee struggling with his own dark impulses. It balances these perspectives well and leads to some fantastic twists at the end that I won't spoil!

Rachel held Kari’s gaze a few seconds too long. That was her first mistake. She should have looked away. Like a jolt of electricity, a premonition zaps Rachel right in the solar plexus, and she knows something horrible is going to happen to her new boss. She has no idea what tragedy will strike Kari, only that it will not be good.

Committed to telling Glen next week about her premonitions, Rachel celebrates by eating dinner on the couch while streaming a movie. Woo-hoo! Also, she eats her Black Bird Café dinner straight out of the to-go containers; washing dishes is not celebrating.

Rachel suggests five thirty, after she gets off work, and rattles off the address for her dad’s house. More spacious and, at least, there will be one other person to share the normal contacts. Her dad is an expert on diversionary handshakes and greetings on Rachel’s behalf.

“Deputies don’t exactly have thriving social lives. Except with other deputies. Cops put people on edge.” So do people with ESP.

“Detective Hagen will be nearby,” she says, stretching the truth because she doesn’t know, for sure, if or when he will be nearby. “Besides,” Rachel pauses for a few seconds, “what choice do I have? If Alicia Meyers is never found, or is found dead, that will traumatize me. Forever.”

“I’m going to the restroom,” Rachel says, tipping her head in that direction. Her dad starts rubbing his temples as if he has a splitting headache. I am his splitting headache, Rachel thinks. “Well … you’re too old for me to go with you,” he says. “Please—be careful.”

Ruby’s tail eagerly thwops against the leg of Rachel’s chair. It isn’t Rachel’s imagination; Ruby knows what “work” is, and she loves it. Rachel can relate; work is her great distractor.

Do you ever feel like you’re on a bit of a treadmill with your blog? You spend hours pouring your heart into a post, you hit publish, it gets a bit of love for 48 hours, and then… silence. It disappears into the archives, never to be seen again.

If that sounds familiar, let me introduce you to your new best friend: Evergreen Content.

I’m all about making blogging simple and enjoyable, and nothing makes life easier than creating content that does the hard work for you while you’re off exploring a new city, hitting the gym, or tucked up with a good book.

What exactly is "Evergreen" Content?

In the gardening world, an evergreen tree stays green and healthy all year round, regardless of the season. In the blogging world, it’s exactly the same.

Evergreen content is a post that stays relevant, useful, and "fresh" for months—or even years—after you hit publish. It isn’t tied to a specific news event, a fleeting trend, or a seasonal sale. It’s the kind of information people will always be searching for.

Why should you care?

Steady Traffic: Instead of a big spike that disappears, these posts bring in a steady stream of readers every single day.
Less Pressure: When you have a library of evergreen posts, you don't feel the frantic need to post every day to stay relevant.
Better SEO: Google loves high-quality, helpful guides that stand the test of time.

3 Simple Steps to Create Your First Evergreen Post

1. Pick a "Timeless" Topic

Think about the questions people always ask in your niche.

Fitness: Instead of "My Workout Today," try "5 Simple Stretches for People Who Sit at a Desk All Day."
Travel: Instead of "My Weekend in Rome," try "How to Use the Metro in Rome: A Step-by-Step Guide."
Beauty: Instead of "March Favourites," try "The Essential 3-Step Skincare Routine for Beginners."

2. Focus on Being Helpful (Not Trendy)

Avoid using "time-sensitive" language. If you say "Earlier this morning" or "Last week when it was snowing," you date your post immediately. Aim for "The Ultimate Guide" or "How-To" style posts that provide a solution to a problem.

3. Make it Easy to Scan

Evergreen posts are often longer and more detailed. To keep it from being overwhelming, use those "signposts" we talked about in my post How to Write "Easy-to-Scan" Blog Posts:

If you are tired of the usual "candy canes and mistletoe" holiday fluff, then you have come to the right place! Today I’m sharing my review of Merry Little Vengeance, a short Christmas story that I picked up on Amazon, and let me tell you—it was an absolute five-star hit for me.

Forget wrapping presents; our protagonist is more likely to be wrapping bodies! Stick around to find out why I’m now officially on a mission to find everything else this author has ever written!

I have a rule or a code: no matter how annoying the kid is or how stupid a woman has been in her choice of husband or profession, I won’t kill them, no matter how good the money is. But if you have a guy you want taken out, I’m your girl as long as he’s earned that bloody end, of course. I’m not a complete monster.

And yes, I was diagnosed as having a borderline personality disorder, but I’m not a full-on psychopath. My disorder was brought on by trauma, which is why I only kill bad guys. How to Write "Easy-to-Scan" Blog Posts

Have you ever clicked on a blog post that looked interesting, only to be met with a massive, never-ending wall of text? If you’re like most of us, you probably took one look, sighed, and hit the "back" button.

I’m a huge believer that learning should be simple. As bloggers, our job isn't just to share great information; it's to make that information as easy to digest as possible.

If you want your readers to actually stay on your page (and come back for more), you need to make your posts "scannable." Here are three intentionally simple ways to do exactly that.

1. Use Clear Headings (Your Signposts)

Think of headings as the GPS for your blog post. They tell the reader exactly what is coming up next.

Why they work: Many readers will scroll through your post first to see if it answers their specific question. If they see a heading that says "3 Ways to Improve Your Fitness," they know exactly where to stop.

Tip: Use the H2 or H3 settings in your blog editor. It’s better for the reader’s eyes and brilliant for your SEO!

2. Embrace the Bullet Point

If you have a list of items, ideas, or tips, don't bury them in a long sentence separated by commas. Set them free!

Bullet points break up the visual weight of a page.
They make "dry" information feel much more manageable.
They allow the reader to "cherry-pick" the bits that are most relevant to them.

3. Add a "Too Long; Didn't Read" Summary

We’re all busy. Sometimes, your reader just wants the "cliff notes" version of your advice.

The Bottom Line: Adding a short summary or a "Key Takeaways" box at the end of your post is a lovely way to be helpful.

Why it’s a winner: It reinforces what they’ve just learned and leaves them feeling like they’ve actually gained something useful from your site.

A Quick "Scannability" Checklist

Before you hit publish on your next post, give it the "The Three-Second Test":

1. Scroll through it quickly. Can you tell what the post is about without reading a single full sentence?

2. Check your paragraphs. Are they short? (Aim for 2-3 sentences max).

3. Look for "white space." Does the page feel "airy" and easy on the eyes?

The Bottom Line

Making your blog easy to scan isn't "dumbing down" your content; it’s being respectful of your reader’s time. When you make your posts simple to navigate, you make your expertise accessible to everyone.

About the author, J.M. Simpson

J.M. Simpson was born in Essex, but was raised primarily in the West Country, never far from a rugged coastline, a sandy beach, or harbour. With a degree and PhD, much of Jo’s working career has been spent undertaking research in a variety of subjects; most notably in construction and development where her expertise lies.

Staying in the Welsh town of Tenby some years ago and watching the local lifeboat launch one stormy winter night, gave Jo the beginnings of an idea for a book. She was fascinated with the idea of the crew risking everything they know and love to plunge into a stormy sea to rescue a stranger. She wondered who these people were and what their lives were like. Forte Sangallo & The Museo dello Sbarco, Nettuno: The Perfect Day Trip from Rome

If you’re living in Rome like I am, you know that as much as we love the Eternal City, sometimes you just need to escape the chaos of the Vespas and the endless crowds. I’m always on the hunt for a solid day trip—something that doesn't require a three-hour drive or a massive dent in my bank account.

Recently, we found the perfect solution. Since we have relatives living in Anzio, we decided to meet up with them and head one stop further down the line to explore Nettuno. It turned out to be one of the best low-cost, high-reward days out we've had in ages.

Here is why Forte Sangallo and the Museo dello Sbarco should be at the top of your "Rome Escape" list.

Getting There: The Stress-Free Route

One of the best things about this trip is how easy it is to get to from Rome. We actually decided to head down by car this time, which is a great option if you want a bit more flexibility—the drive is straightforward and takes just over an hour.

However, if you don't fancy driving, the train is just as easy. You can hop on the regional service from Roma Termini (the FL8 line); it’s only about an hour’s journey and costs less than a fancy cocktail in the city centre! Plus, Nettuno is the very last stop, so you don't even have to worry about missing your station. Whether you drive or step off the train, that fresh sea air hits you immediately—which, let’s be honest, is exactly what every Roman resident needs once in a while.

Stepping into History at Forte Sangallo

From the station, it’s a short, breezy walk to the coast where the massive brick walls of Forte Sangallo loom over the water. Built in the early 1500s for the Borgias, this place is a fortress in every sense of the word.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that entry was completely free when we visited.

The Architecture: Walking through the drawbridge and into the courtyard feels like stepping back into the Renaissance. The brickwork is incredibly well-preserved.
The Views: Make sure you head up to the ramparts. Looking out over the Tyrrhenian Sea with the wind in your hair is the perfect antidote to a busy week in the city. You can see all the way back towards Anzio and the sweeping coastline.

A Moving Tribute: Museo dello Sbarco

Tucked inside the fortress is the Museo dello Sbarco (The Allied Landings Museum). Since my relatives live in Anzio, they’re very familiar with the history of "Operation Shingle," but seeing the artefacts housed right inside the fort's thick walls added a whole new layer to the story.

Like the fort itself, the museum was free to enter during our trip, which is amazing considering the quality of the collection.

The Collection: It’s a very intimate and moving museum. You’ll see original uniforms, helmets, telegrams, and photographs from the 1944 landings.
The Personal Touch: It’s not just a dry history lesson; it focuses on the human side of the soldiers and the local Italians caught in the middle. It’s a quiet, reflective space that really makes you appreciate the ground you’re standing on.

A Surprise Find: Sezione di Paleontologia e Preistoria

While we were exploring the fortress, we stumbled upon the Sezione di Paleontologia e Preistoria (part of the town's Antiquarium). Honestly, I didn't expect to find mammoth teeth and prehistoric tools just a few steps away from a Renaissance courtyard, but it was a brilliant addition to the day.

What’s inside: This section is packed with local fossils and prehistoric artefacts found right here in the Lazio region. It covers everything from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age. It’s fascinating to see what this coastline looked like thousands of years before the Romans or the Borgias arrived.
Great for Kids: If you’re travelling with family, this part is a winner. It’s small enough that it won't bore them, but cool enough (who doesn't love prehistoric animals?) to keep them engaged.
The Best Bit: Just like the rest of our visit to the fort, this section was free to enter when we went. It really makes you appreciate how much culture you can soak up in Nettuno without spending a single Euro.

The Verdict: Why You Should Go

If you’re a Rome local looking for a day trip that is cheap, culturally rich, and incredibly easy to manage, Nettuno is a winner. You get the medieval charm, the WWII history, and the sea views all in one afternoon. Plus, having Anzio just next door means you can easily combine the two for a full day of coastal exploring.

Today I’m diving into Eleven Hours to Murder by D.B. Borton. This was a bit of an experiment for me, as I hopped into the series right at book eleven without reading the first ten (I know, I’m a rebel!). If you’re looking for a witty mystery featuring a brilliantly relatable senior sleuth who doesn’t take herself too seriously, stick around to see why I gave this one a 3-star rating.

A "Senior Sleuth" Lead: I really enjoyed having an older protagonist for a change. The main character, Cat Caliban, is a widowed PI in her fifties and a self-proclaimed cat lady, which made for a lovely dynamic alongside her ex-cop partner, Moses.
The Mystery: The story follows a 19-year-old cold case involving a teenager who vanished in the summer of 1969 after heading off to the legendary Woodstock festival.
The 1960s Vibe: Even though I wasn't around during that era, I thought the book did a brilliant job of capturing the tone of the hippie movement and the early days of music festivals.
Series vs. Standalone: This is actually the 11th book in the series, and while I haven't read the previous ten, it works perfectly well as a standalone. You won't feel lost, though I suspect reading them in order would add a bit more depth to the character relationships.
My Rating: I gave this one 3 stars. It was a nice change of pace and I really liked the atmosphere, even if I think the backstory from earlier books might have bumped it up a bit.

“Tell me something about our client.” I had a death grip on the armrest in the pre-crash position I always assumed when Moses was piloting the Fairlane. He hurtled through the stop sign at Spring Grove with the casual confidence of an ex-cop who never expected to be arrested and I reflected that if we were going to be flattened by a semi, this would make a convenient spot, with the vast expanse of Spring Grove Cemetery to our left.

Caught up in this story, I was tempted to ask whether this relationship had lasted for nineteen years and how it had ended, but I was afraid that if I followed that particular red herring, we’d never get back to the case.

“You know, Mom, you keep calling Leila a ‘girl,’ but she wasn’t a girl, really, was she? She was sixteen.” I was baffled. “What should I call her?” “A woman. She was old enough to be sexually active.”

“What bothers me most is not what we found but what we didn’t find.”

Reluctantly, I spent some time that night on my taxes and concluded that I should have sampled the magic brownies myself.

I snoozed a little after that, which is my preferred way to travel when Moses is at the wheel: unconscious.

The main reason that noir detective stories are so noir is that most of the world is at work during the day and not available to be interviewed or spied on or followed. We detectives need to take advantage of prime time if we want to reach anybody.

I considered suggesting that she cheer herself up with a few slices of bacon, since I often find that food with a high fat content does wonders for a funk, but I thought my suggestion might not be appreciated, practical though it was, so I didn’t say anything right away.

This was something I loved about my job: in the process of detecting something, I always learned about interesting stuff I wasn’t detecting at all.

“Don’t do anything stupid, Cat. And if you do, take Mildred.” This had been Moses’s final admonition to me before he left for his Army reunion.

My first impulse was to drive to the library downtown. My first impulse was always to drive to a library.

Moses called again later when I was reading in the recliner with a cat on either side and one in my lap. Since the cat in my lap objected to being a book rest, I had been forced to hold the book awkwardly, but I figured I was exercising my biceps and triceps in the process. If you added the lifts of a G&T glass, I was burning quite a few calories.

I believe learning should be simple and accessible to everyone. You can absolutely create a high-quality blog that people love to read using free resources that are just as good (and often easier to use!) than the paid ones. Here is how to grow your site on a "zero-budget" budget.

1. Use Your Smartphone for Photos

You don’t need a €1,000 DSLR camera to have beautiful blog images. Most smartphones in 2026 have incredible cameras that are more than enough for beauty, travel, or book shots.

The Simple Trick: Use natural light. Take your photos near a window or outside on an overcast day. It’s free, and it looks better than any expensive studio light.
Free Tool: Use Canva (the free version) to add simple text to your images or create Pinterest pins. It’s a lifesaver for making your blog look polished and professional.

2. Master Free SEO Tools

You don't need a monthly subscription to an SEO dashboard to get noticed by Google.

The Simple Trick: Use Google Search itself! Start typing your topic into the search bar and see what "Auto-complete" suggests. Those are the exact phrases people are searching for.
Free Tool: Google Search Console. It’s a free service from Google that tells you which keywords are bringing people to your site. It’s a bit like having a free coach telling you what’s working.

3. Focus on "Organic" Promotion

You don’t need to pay for ads to get readers. The most loyal audiences are built through genuine connection.

Since we’re already flying through 2026, the old "hacks" from a few years ago won't cut it anymore. But don't fret! SEO isn't just for tech geniuses; it’s really just about being the most helpful person on the internet.

Here is a beginner-friendly look at what matters right now in the world of search.

1. AI is the New Librarian

Back in the day, you’d type a few words into a search bar and get a list of links. In 2026, Google acts more like a super-smart librarian. When you ask a question, it uses AI to read through dozens of websites and give you a summary at the very top.

What you can do: Don’t just repeat what everyone else says. Share your own unique stories or "insider" tips. If the AI sees you have something original to say, it’s more likely to mention your site in that top summary.

2. It’s All About "E-E-A-T"
