The University of Technology Sydney is looking for dogs WITH FLEAS in Cairns for a flea trial.

Treatment for dogs with fleas

Kevin Rudd won a Twinings Tea Competition. As part of the competition, Mr Rudd got to choose a charity of his choice to receive proceeds from the sale of the tea. The tea is called Twinings Australian Afternoon Tea a blend of Russian Caravan, Irish Breakfast and Cylon Orange Pekoe, described as a strong blend with depth to it.

Santa Paws is coming to town!

Santa Paws is coming town on Sunday 27 November, Cairns Esplanade, just north of Muddies Playground from 9am to 1pm. Have your pet's picture taken with Santa between 9am and 1pm or 1pm and 2pm for shy and timid animals. Come along for some fun! All funds raised go to the RSPCA Cairns Shelter.

It doesn’t matter if your pet has been naughty or nice, our Santa loves visits from everyone! And to be honest even if your two beloved dogs have shredded every last toilet roll in existence – they are still angels underneath!

We will have our BBQ, RSPCA Merchandising, Face Painting, dog treats and scrumptious cupcakes for sale, Information Stall and of course SANTA PAWS!

There will also be a Christmas Gift Tree, so if you wish to leave a present under the tree, for the animals at the Cairns RSPCA Shelter, then please bring with you or you can purchase on the day from our treat stall!

Santa Paws will be sitting for portraits Sunday 27th November 9am – 1pm, Esplanade (just north of Muddies Playground). For the pets that a little shy or timid, we are taking bookings from 1-2pm. Please call 4055 1487.

National Desexing Network are launching National Desexing Month early this year – in July.

Cats and dogs are safer and happier if desexed. They are less likely to roam and get into fights, or hit by cars or impounded. They are less likely to get mammary and testicular cancer, and urinary tract disease. Owners find it easier to care for desexed cats and dogs because they are more homely and affectionate. With fewer unwanted cats and dogs due to desexing, those already in shelters are more likely to find homes. Unwanted kittens and puppies will no longer have to be killed.

With the down turn in the economy, shelters and pounds around Australia are struggling with more animals being handed in, fewer animals being adopted and less money being donated to help care for them,” said Sylvana Wenderhold, NDN Director. “This leads to increased euthanasia.”

An estimated 100 000 cats and 80 000 dogs are being killed in pounds and shelters in Australia every year, and over 80 000 dogs. The best way out of this crisis is for people to get their pets desexed now, in July, before we get to the spring breeding season and an influx of unwanted and euthanased pets.

RSPCA Pet-D-Tect Lost and Found Pets

What is Pet-D-Tect? Pet D Tect is a service provided by RSPCA QLD to help owners find their lost pets. It costs $10.00 for 10 days and it has helped hundreds of lost pets find their way home across Queensland. Pet D Tect not only gives the animals of Queensland a much better chance of being found, but it also provides a financial boost to the RSPCA helping to fund the care of animals whose owners could not be located.

If your pet is on Pet D Tect a team of RSPCA Staff and Volunteers will conduct daily searches on our internal database which includes all the found animals called in or logded on the website by members of the public, brought in by our emergency Animal Ambulance and called in by Vet Surgeries. The team will also search pounds local to where your animal went missing and your animal's file will stand out on our website with the special Pet D Tect status jumping to the front.

The RSPCA and our Every Day Heroes

Everyday heroes are the people, just like you, that give our animals a voice. The RSPCA rely on volunteers and donations from the public. As one of the fundraising volunteers at the local RSPCA Shelter I have experienced the generosity of people who care about animals and seen those funds go to purchase much needed equipment such as a generator for power outages, a rescue boat to help the RSPCA inspector rescue stranded animals and of course emergency vet treatments for abused animals. This is only possible with donations from a generous public, people just like you, our neighbours, friends and family; our every day heroes.

The RSPCA is in need of funding for urgent repairs and upgrades after flooding and cyclones in Queensland.
Together we ask our every day heroes to dig deep, even a gold coin donation counts, to help raise much needed funds. The proposed plans and upgrades of just one of the RSPCA shelters below.

Friends of the RSPCA Cairns meeting

The RSPCA is very proud to have the support of so many volunteers who are committed to helping us care for the 41,000+ animals that come into our care every year...but the more help we get, the bigger and better we can become...and the more animals lives we can positively impact! As an RSPCA Volunteer, you really will be MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

The Friends of RSPCA Cairns are desperately seeking new members to join our fabulous team of fundraising volunteers. The money we raise stays in Cairns to help our animal shelter and to support our local Inspector.

Some of the projects that we have funded in the past are: Rescue Boat for our Inspector, several emergency vet treatments for animals that have suffered cruelty, a dog enrichment play gym, including toys and a generator. Other projects we have in the pipe line are: Rainwater tanks and a new cattery.

Shop to Save.............

Since partnering with the RSPCA's Adopt a Pet Program the Bendigo Bank has helped save the lives of nearly 60,000 cats and dogs.

So far the Bendigo Bank's contribution to the Adopt a Pet has raised $780,000. The service is an integral part of the RSPCA's work with animals, providing a way for people to find and adopt homeless.

Help animals in need by applying for a new Bendigo RSPCA Rescue Visa and know that every time we go shopping we are helping animals in need.

RSPCA Calendar is out again this year!

The 2011 RSPCA Calendars can be purchased for $20 each or 2 for $30 and can be purchased from the Cairns RSPCA Shelter, Corner Arnold & Greenbank Streets, Stratford, from Petstock in Mulgrave Road or The Feed Shop, 12-14 George Street, Gordonvale.

Last year's calendar raised $14,000 much needed funds which helped to buy dog kennels for weather protection and security for puppies, wall mounted fans to help keep the animals cool throughout the shelter during the hot summer months, two industrial washing machines, purchase of a rescue boat, trailor and equipment for the RSPCA inspector. All of these items would not have been possible without the generosity of everyone who supports the RSPCA.

New Dog Chip Plan Revealed

A new dog breeder identification system is to be introduced next year which should help to stamp out dodgy puppy mills the RSPCA says. Desley Boyle the Queensland Local Government Minister announced that in 2011 dog breeders must be registered and their ID numbers displayed anywhere puppies are sold. Breeder's ID numbers must be included in the advertising of puppies for sale and breeding bitches will be micro chipped and their details included in the registration and micro chipping of every puppy sold.

RSPCA spokesperson, Michael Beattie said the new regulations would cut down on unscrupulous breeders and make internet dog sellers more accountable. "It's definitely a step in the right direction" Mr Beattie said.

RSPCA Causes - Justice for Animals

Legals cost but justice is priceless! Over $465,000 has been raised so far.

THE ISSUE
For years RSPCA Qld has been urging Queensland magistrates to treat cases of animal cruelty as the serious crimes that they are, not the misdemeanors that paltry fines and lenient sentences indicate. Current sentences and fines do not meet community expectationS of the intent of the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001, under which offenders can receive up to two years' imprisonment or a $100,000 fine for cruelty. Breaches of duty of care can earn a fine of up to $30,000 or one year imprisonment.

Unfortunately not all animals have loving homes

Over $465,000 has been raised in donations from kind and generous supporters - we're almost at our $500,000 target! Over 10,000 signatures or "Shows of Support" have been gathered for BLEATS. 15 Lawyers have joined BLEATS since the campaign began!

Since the launch of the Justice for Animals campaign outside the Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday May 27, state-wide support from proactive community members has greatly encouraged RSPCA Qld. Specially recruited and trained volunteers continue to spread the campaign message, "Legals Cost. Justice is Priceless."
