How to floss properly

Flossing is an essential part of the tooth-cleaning process because it removes plaque from between teeth and at the gumline, where periodontal disease often begins.
If you find using floss awkward or difficult, ask your dental hygienist about the variety of dental floss holders or interdental cleaning devices that are available.

Wind 18" of floss around middle fingers of each hand. Pinch floss between thumbs and index fingers, leaving a 1"- 2" length in between. Use thumbs to direct floss between upper teeth.

Keep a 1" - 2" length of floss taut between fingers. Use index fingers to guide floss between contacts of the lower teeth.

Gently guide floss between the teeth by using a zig-zag motion. DO NOT SNAP FLOSS BETWEEN YOUR TEETH. Contour floss around the side of the tooth.

Slide floss up and down against the tooth surface and under the gumline. Floss each tooth thoroughly with a clean section of floss.

10 Points to Remember before AIPG and AIIMS

1. Revise subjects(topics) in which you frequently make mistakes.

2. Make sure you know NBDE and medical papers on tip of your tongue.

3. Undersatnd the explanations associated with answers.

4. Don't mark any answer without reading it properly, even a slight change of language can change the answer.

5 .Don’t depend on controversial questions too much for your selection (they can just alter 5-10 ranks of urs…….bt it can cost too much if you are in waiting list)………avoid marking them until and unless you are sure of it

6. RITU DUGGAL's ORTHO , PANKAJ DHAVAN'S PROSTHO , and PRABHAKAR CARIOLOGY and PERIO are must before exam.

7 .Start calculating your accuracy of how much you know the correct answers (You should aim for 95 % or more correct answers of both Gowrishankar sir’s DENTEST and Pulse in last month before AIPG )

8.Make sure you have done previous papers well.

9. Avoid negative thoughts and people

Alaska dentist performs root canal on tiger

An Anchorage endodontist performed a root canal on a big tooth in a very big patient _ a full-grown Siberian tiger.

Dr. Doug Luiten worked on 300-pound Kunali _ measuring nearly 7 feet from backside to nose _ Thursday at the Alaska Zoo.

"It's the longest tooth I've ever worked on," Luiten said of more than three-inch (8 centimeter) canine.

The zoo had to order some special instruments to accommodate the longer tooth, and even had to modify those during the root canal.

Kunali was not restrained, and didn't wake up during the hour-long procedure thanks to anesthesia administered by Dr. David Brunson, a visiting veterinarian from Madison, Wis.

"He was a good boy, he handled things well," Brunson said.

Hours after the procedure, Alaska Zoo Executive Director Pat Lampi said 7-year-old Kunali was doing fine.

"It couldn't have gone any better today, it was perfect," said Dr. Riley Wilson, the zoo's veterinarian.

The root canal was necessary after Kunali fractured the tooth 4 or 5 years ago, likely when he hit a metal post.

"They're not chewing on things that break their teeth easily, but they're wrestling around," Wilson said. "It takes some trauma to chip that big of a tooth."

The fractured tooth didn't seem to distress Kunali, Luiten said, but the root canal will give him long-term protection from infection.

Root canals for animals are somewhat common, with previous procedures performed at the zoo on a polar bear, the zoo's other tiger, a wolverine, a wolf and two on a snow leopard.

But this was the first procedure in a recently opened operating room and the first for the zoo's new veterinary table, complete with hydraulic lift and fold-out leafs to accommodate limbs and tails.

Before the new operating room opened, procedures were conducted inside the animal's exhibits. "We were on our knees in dens," Lampi said.

Going to the animal's habitat was more of a challenge, Wilson said, because there was poor lighting, not enough room for everyone who needed to be involved and it was much colder.

The new table, worth about $9,000, was made locally and donated to the zoo.

9. Taking a coffee-sunfeast break (from texting and chatting and walking around..its tiring na…!)

10. Going and picking more and more books from shelves.(which you have no inclination to study…syllabus ka waat laga hai…reference karenge)

Tooth-decay germs tied to bowel cancer

LONDON: A type of bacteria that cause dental decay and skin ulcers may also be linked to bowel cancer, say scientists who have found the bug incolon tumours.

According to two research teams, which have discovered the pathogen 'Fusobacterium' in bowel cancer tumours, say it's not yet clear if the bug might cause cancerous changes or whether it is just an incidental finding.

If the bacterium is to blame, antibiotics might be able to treat it and prevent cancer, they reported in the journal Genome Research.

Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer after after breast and lung.

Although the exact cause of bowel cancer is unknown, there are certain factors that increase risk, such as a strong family history of the disease and older age. Sarah Williams, of Cancer Research UK, said the research gave a clue about the environment in which bowel cancer grows. "It's early days and we look forward to the results of more specific, in-depth studies," Williams was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"In the meantime, people can reduce their risk of bowel cancer by not smoking, cutting down on alcohol, keeping a healthy weight, being active, reducing the amount of red and processed meat in their diet and eating plenty of fibre."

Together, the two research studies looked at more than 100 samples of healthy and cancerous bowel tissue and found the presence of the bug. They discovered the link by analyzing genetic material in tumor samples. They then subtracted human genes from the mix. What remained were microbe genes.

For years, Dr. Robert A. Holt, a genomics researcher at the British Columbia Cancer Agency, wrestled with a question about colon cancer. Might it be caused, or pushed along, by a bacterial infection?

Cancers of the liver, stomach and cervix have all been linked to microbes, he knew. And if there is one place in the body with a lot of microbes, it is the colon - microbial cells outnumber human cells there by a ratio of at least nine to one.

The new tools of genomic analysis offered an opportunity to look for a connection. What Dr. Holt and another group of researchers, working independently, have found is completely unexpected and puzzling. One particular species of bacterium never particularly prevalent in the colon seems to have a disturbing affinity for colon cancers.

The two research groups discovered the link by analyzing genetic material in tumor samples. They then subtracted human genes from the mix. What remained were microbe genes.

An analysis of these microbial genes showed that a type of bacterium, Fusobacterium, was abundant in the tumors although it normally is not among the more prominent species in the gut. Not only were the bacteria lurking around the cancer cells, but Dr. Holt found in subsequent experiments that they actually were burrowing into tumor cells - "which is kind of creepy," he said. An ability to invade cells, he said, is often what distinguishes a disease-causing microbe from one that is harmless.

Of course, that doesn't prove that Fusobacteria are causing tumors. They might just find the cancer cells a good place to live.

As Dr. Holt and his colleagues investigated further, they found the bacteria were especially prevalent in patients whose cancer had spread beyond their colons.

The finding could have been an anomaly. But, with no knowledge of Dr. Holt's results, Dr. Matthew Meyerson and his colleagues at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston found the same thing. And while Dr. Holt's patients were from Canada, Dr. Meyerson's were from people in the United States, Vietnam and Barcelona, Spain. All had the bacteria in far greater abundance in their tumors than in normal colon cells.

"That, to me, was a real eye-opener," Dr. Meyerson said. He expected lots of different bacteria in the tumor tissue, he said. "It turned out not to be that way."

The two studies are published online Tuesday in Genome Research.

In their study, Dr. Holt and his colleagues began by looking at RNA, which reflects active genes, from 11 colon cancer patients. The colon cancer cells had an average of 79 times as many Fusobacteria as normal cells.

The investigators then looked for the bacteria in 88 more tumors and corresponding adjacent noncancerous colon cells, using probes for Fusobacteria genes. With that more sensitive method, they found an average of 415 times as many Fusobacteria in the tumor cells as in the normal cells.

Dr. Meyerson and his colleagues did similar experiments but looked at DNA, the gene sequences, instead of RNA. They began with nine patients, finding Fusobacteria DNA sequences mostly in the cancer tissue. Then they looked at cells from an additional 95 patients, searching specifically for Fusobacteria gene sequences. Again, the researchers found the bacteria in the cancer cells.

"I don't know what to make of it," Dr. Meyerson said. "The bacteria are hanging around the tumors, but I have no idea if they spur or cause cancer."

MDS Entrance Books- A Review by Dr. Suresh Shenvi

MDS ENTRANCE BOOKS- A REVIEW

Hmmmm:).. It has been a quite long time since I wrote any new blogs for the MDS entrance . Especially after that huge success of my two blogs which gave the new aspirants a hope in the field of entrance. Thank you soooo much for all those comments and shares. Whatever name currently signifies me in the field of entrance surely is a blessing from all those who always wished good for me , and I am sure those blogs have been time tested and surely have contributed to pages in the success stories of those 10,000 aspirants who read it. I can’t ask more :)

Entrance is kind of thriller story where you can’t predict the ending without reaching till the last scene. There will be many twists in the story. Just like the way you meet many new people who will tell you many different kind of preparation ways. Time is changing.. so does the Entrance !!! Many people will tell you to read theory few will tell you to read MCQ and few both. I believe that the success in entrance does not depend completely on one year preparation. But it does not mean that a year long preparation will not get you a seat. But there is one hard fact which we all need to accept. You may or may not win the race. But yes.. you do have a hope in anyway which you follow. But!!! Hope is all is what is required.. isn’t it?? :)

A book is said to be the best friend which will guide you through the success in the entrance exam..:) .. and just like the other friends which you will have in your life.. some are good.. some are bad.. and some need fine tuning…

But.. one things which everyone needs to understand here .. Commenting about the book is very easy.. but writing one???… ITS NOT EASY.!!! TRY IT ONE DAY

The basic difference between me and others??.. I tried to correct many books.. l and sent the correction to the author.. After 3 years too.. I still forward it to the student who need it.. I still try to find such guy who will make such an effort to help others, than just commenting on the efforts of the author. The search goes on ..!!

I guess there are around 10- 15 books in the market which could help you out in the field of entrance. Frankly speaking ..I HAVE NOT READ ALL OF THOSE.. BUT YES.. I do have read most of them during my entrance days.. and about rest of the books. ??.. I have heard and seen a bit which I would surely share it with you. It’s my sincere request to all those who read this blog and also for the authors of these books, not to consider this blog as a way of brand publicity by me. I also sincere apologies if someone finds my writing unacceptable. I whole heartily appreciate every small effort made by each author in coming out of the book and would like to tell them that in my every page of dentistry they have surely left a mark.

So here I am writing a review on all those books and the different ways of reading in order to improve your way of preparation and gain maximum benefit in a small amount of time. I won’t be commenting on all the books as I don’t know much to comment about them. But yes.. this blog will surely consider all those books which are must to clear a MDS entrance with a top ranks or at least which is said to be must for clearing AIPG

SUBJECT WISE BOOKS

19 subjects… 4 years :D 1 year internship.. Do you think you can read those again..!! I doubt..at least not without taking a break.. and the subject wise books are going to help you out in covering the topics in that 365 days… there are lot many.. the most imp books are mentioned here.

1) DENTAL PULSE

Surely… the name goes right. Its indeed a PULSE OF THE MDS ENTRANCE SUCCESS. I am sure. This would be the first book which all will buy at the start of preparation of entrance.. It won’t be surprising to see it in every students hand as soon as the student enters the internship.
The book consists most of the old questions, well-arranged and in a well retain-able manner. Currently the 4th ed being marketed. It is available in two volumes. The basic and the clinical one.. you will almost find all the old question of entrance papers with limited explanation which surely is very easy to revise. In fact, this book is the one which needs to be read till the last moment of exam..

Friends…so you finally brought the book and now have planned to read it.. but how??.. let me help you out..

1st reading

Never read the synopsis at first… wonder why?? Hmmm. The most important factor for preparation of entrance is the stress or tension… we are more efficient when our bottom is on fire;) ..isn’t it? ..what’s the logic of reading synopsis and reading the questions.. obviously.. you will answer more in the first attempt. But.. if you read without the synopsis and try to answer question then I am sure around 80% students will be able to answer only 60 out of 100 question.. and yeh.. you will also feel that you won’t be to crack the entrance.. but.. NO Fear.. it’s exactly this fear which is needed at the start… but not to quit!!!.. scoring at the first attempt is not a criteria. WHAT MATTERS IS THE END!!! . The initial score gives you a baseline on which you can compare your successive scores after revision. Hope you got my point:) Never mark any question in 1st reading in the question section ... just mark important point in the explanation. Why???.. I will tell you why a bit later.

The basic aim of reading a book for the first time is to get an idea about the type of topics which is imp and to get an idea how different the entrance is from the UG theory preparation.. marking 100 question 100 does not mean you will get a rank for sure.. remember.. there are around 10 books with around 10,000 questions which u need to remember and the question in the next exam will have new one too.,.

2nd revision

When you start the 2nd reading make sure you read synopsis but don’t try more time in remembering synopsis.. what’s imp in the initial reading is.. you need to enter the competition. That’s only possible by remembering the old question.. you can gain knowledge later.. start answering the questions more...read the explanation more rather than the synopsis. Still don’t mark any question. Just mark the imp points in the explanation.

Successive revision.

When you finish around 4 revisions , then mark the questions which you always tend to forget.. I believe that the human brain will surely will not able to store some questions no matter how many times you read. .I am sure you will experience it.. this is mostly because there are some questions which lacks logic, or no reference or completely different than what we have read in our BDS days. Now mark those question and during successive revisions give more imp for them.. why?? Believe me.. these are the questions which will be asked more in exam and most of the time students go wrong here.

Now the imp question is how to remember those difficult question without any logic..you need to find a word in that question and link it to the answer.so in next revisions whenever you come to that marked question you will see that word and you need to remember what was the answer.. I am sure..This helps :)

So basically this is how you need to read the Pulse..the marking part also applies to the other books which I wont be repeating in the following matter.

One strange question which I have been asked by many student… SIR.. IS PULSE SUFFICIENT FOR SECURING A RANK? OR FEW STUDENTS ALSO ASKED ME WHETHER PULSE AND PAST DENTAL PAPERS ARE ENOUGH FOR EXAM?

I really don’t know what to answer.. but I would like to tell you one .. first of all.. nobody knows how will be the exam or which type questions will come in to the exam. The pattern changes every year.. but yes.. new question means.. its new for all.. so whats imp is you need to remember all old questions and gain some extra knowledge.

Getting a rank is not imp.. Getting a top rank Is most imp. Getting a branch which you hate will make you compromise for whole life..but also remember getting a seat also imp. I am just telling you that when you have chance to get good rank then make a complete heart effort. Work for success.. don’t ask for short cut..

But yes.. state exams are bit easy.. and it will be great if you don’t restrict it to only one book and when you actually have more time and you can get a good rank by putting some more effort.. YOU DON’T KNOW UNLESS YOU TRY!!

Although the explanation and well arranged matter surely needs a appraisal from any student but I would also advise aspirants to gain some extra knowledge rather than just limiting your self to it.

2) DENTEST BY Dr GOWRISHANKAR

Bible of Dentistry.. THE AUTHOR IS CONSIDERED AS A PIONEER IN THE FIELD OF MDSENTRANCE BOOKS. It has been around 16 years since the book is in market.. the book surely is one of its kind.. Infact in many states students start reading from the DENTEST first..Why??.. no book will ever give you so clear explanation which is extremely important in order to understand how to answer. Reading Dentest will clear your confusion and gives you extra knowledge. Its almost equal to reading most of the regular books.. I have seen students avoiding reading the explanation part..May be sometimes even I had done the same thing during my preparation.. but it was after AIIMS I realized that the answers of new questions can be found in the explanatory part. Yes the book is kind of big.. but if you are not reading theory and planning for an awesome rank in State or Comedentrance or any Deemed university.. I DOUBT. I might have been able to get rank in most of the exams.. but surely this book had made a big contribution In getting me a 6th rank in state.

It was during my preparation when I made a list of correction in which I tried to compare the answers from pulse and Dentest.. I found many mistakes. Recently I got chance to go through it again... and it was surprising to know that some most controversial question answers were rightly explained in theDentest than the Pulse.. but yes.. surely the editing was not great that time.. it had many mistakes. but. Recently the new 5th ed of Basic Volume has been released and it is well arranged and colourful than the earlier. And regarding the Clinical Edition..hoping to see it soon with new modification. And another imp point...the Dentest has many new question and there is a good amount of chance that it will be asked in exam.

1ST READING.

Read everything.. GET TO THE DEPTH OF EXPLANATION.. UNDERSTAND IT.. FEEL THE ANSWER!!!. Mark imp points from the explanation. Get to know what exactly the subject is about..:)

Successive reading..

In the end of this blog I will surely try to give you a plan regarding the order of reading many books…but after reading Pulse and Dentest at least 3 times , then you need to mark the new questions which is absent in the Pulse. And do give more imp to them. Try to compare the answer from Pulse andDentest.. Weigh the logic between ..and then accept the answer.

3) BHATIA

During my time.. I had read Bhatia. I wont be able tell you much about this book as I had not gone through it completely but yes.. the book surely had very good synopsis part which according to my seniors.

4) RITU DUGGAL

Has some of the finest question specially for Ortho and Pedo.. but lacks references.. but guys.. during my time when I got 18th in PG,I the questions were lifted from the above subjects of the book.

5) MANISHA PRABHAKAR

AIPG Perio questions are directly lifted from here.. and that to in order.. do read the Perio part .

6) JATIN KARLA

Consists only of Oral Pathology question .. kind of similar to reading Shafer’s .. During my time Oral path was lifted from here.. good question for ORAL PATHOLOGY

Friends. There are lot many other books.. but I guess when you are in internship you hardly have time to read all the books. Or at least it was true in my case.
So I guess this much is enough for subject wise books.

BOOKS WITH YEAR WISE PAPERS

It is extremely important that you revise question in year wise manner and not just in subject wise …WHY??

During my time.. when I read the Pulse and the Dentest 2-3 times.. there was a visual memory in my brain..and by the time I came to the first question .. my brain already knew what was the next question.. and basically because of this I never used to concentrate as much as I used to concentrate at initial reading.. and because of this I used to make many mistake..

One imp point which we need to remember is.. its easy to remember questions when its from the same subject. But what’s important to know is.. in exams questions appear randomly.. and YOU BRAIN NEEDS TO BE TRAINED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT JUMPS FROM ANATOMY TO PHYSIOLOGY IN 2 SEC, IT JUMPS FROM CONSERVATIVE TO ORAL SURGERY IN 2 SEC,.. I hope you got my point. That’s only possible when YOU solve the question in a year wise papers.

So here are the few important books which have entrance papers arranged year wise

1) DENTAL BYTES

You will never get a book having so many question papers .. NEVER!!!.. infact the book had most of the papers from 1991 it self.. it almost has everything.. PGI, AIIMS, AIPG,MAHRASHTRA , JIPMER, and lot lot lot. But yes.. The old edition had explanation only for only recent papers. I had done the corrections of 8th ed.. and surely my seniors also made a great contribution for its correction. It has been 3 years I have sent it thousands. Now it’s the 10th ed. Me and my friend Gaurav have even contributed to it .. it also has references ..it does have my corrections and of many too. The new edition has references and explanation ..but you wont find old papers I guess before 2005 in the new edition.. anyway you if you need then you can get it from the publisher.

I have been always told by many students that it has lot many mistakes even I was one time.. But the difference between me and them ?? when I got a seat.. I made an sincere effort to send them to the author and many students. And infact those were the initial steps which gave me some name in the field of entrance.

It’s a difficult task to obtain so many papers and the author had made a sincere effort to give it to so many those are always looking for the early release of papers… atlest we need to appreciate it rather than just complaining. I am sure a student who has read the subject wise book properly, will easily identify such mistakes..Pls do send the correction to the respected authors. Help others. Help you juniors. Help your friends. It makes a difference in your life.
It’s a must buy book.

2) DENTAL EXPLORER

It was a good book during my time. Indeed it was the only book which had recent BHU and PGIquestions papers and surely made a great contribution for many. In fact it was Dr Gaurav Verma one of the author of Dental explorer.. Hope I am not wrong.. who started the community of TIPS FORMDS PREPARATION ON ORKUT. Which I continued later. Thanks for taking such a great initiative. The book is now authored by Dr. Gyanander Attresh.

I really don’t have much idea about the recent edition. I am sure the new aspirants can always through some light on it.

3) DENTAL QUEST

It was around March when me and my friend Dr Gaurav Ram Chandani came up with an idea of writing a book. The Dental Quest has been appreciated by many which had AIPG,MHCET,KCET,COMED 2011 paper and AIIMS NOV 2010 paper. The copies were sold rapidly.. but soon we do found few mistakes which were mostly in AIPG paper and were due to editing part. We did make an effort to send the correction to many. I have seen many students giving a positive review regarding our book and also appreciated by many coaching institutes.. there were some harsh comment like we being greedy of money. ;) its indeed strange to get such comments about a book which gives 5 papers just 140/-.. in fact a movie costs more than the book. Never mind we are always ready to take such comments in a positive way and out heartfelt thanks to all those who loved it for sure.

I am sure many of you won’t find much explanation in Aipg 2011 paper as it consisted many repeated questions. But I am sure the other papers will make a big difference in your entrance as it has the explanation arranged in point to point wise from latest books and in fact the exact references.. I am sure you won’t find such a good explanation in any other papers. It’s a sincere effort by me and my friend which even today gets lot many hits on Facebook page.

Do request for the correction if you don’t have it yet.. we are always ready to send it to.

MEDICAL BOOKS.

Now.. you must be wondering why the hell we should read the medical papers!!!.. guys.. let’s all accept one fact.. we are bit weak for the basic subjects question of AIPG.. the questions are really HI-FI.. but the good thing.. most of them are repeated from the medical papers.. The guy who aims AIPG , will surely read the medical question papers.. Common guys.. it’s like you already have your question papers in your hand.. be smart enough to do it before exam. In my exam around 20 to 30 question were a direct lift from medical part.. Chromosome for Cat Eye Syndrome?? Do you think you can answer that?? But it was lifted from recent AIPG medical part.

SO there are lot many medical books.. but here are the once I read ,,and almost everybody reads even today too.

1) MUDHIT KHANNA

Contains AIPG papers arranged year wise and subject wise too.. Hats off to authors.. the amount of depth they have given in the books is surely appreciated by all.. but One fact you all need to remember… We don’t have to dive so much.. but yes..at the end you have to remember at least question and answers…

Now.. I know.. you all take the Mudhit khanna and read Anatomy, Physiology and all those which we read in our BDS days.. But that’s not enough.. The examiners knows that you will read that.. but the hard work counts more too.. The rank holders push themselves an extra mile.. REMEMBER..Pharmac question are there in Gynecology subject,.. syndrome question are there in Pediatric too.. And believe me .. these are the question which will be asked in the exam for sure.. and for those who don’t read those subject will surely feel the exam paper really difficult.. it took me only 10 min to answer those repeated question.. I lost marks in the dental part.. if you want to be in at least below 300 in those 8k students.. then ..U need to do all the question.. but how??

Read all questions at first reading.. mark which are related ,, or if in case even if you think it might be 60% related to us.. you don’t have to read lower limb questions.. that’s not related .. but Parmac question can be always asked from any subject.. you cant say no to that.. BE SMART!!!.. read it many times.. and make sure,, in the end you know at least know question and answer. That’s A REASONABLE DEAL I GUESS

Regarding the explanation.. reading the explanation makes your basic strong.. .. you can also get good charts for Pharmac in the book.. Community explained very nicely in the old volumes.. READ THAT!!!

For exam sake.. you need to do at least last 5 years of Medical AIPG papers!!!

MAKE AN EFFORT TO TEST YOU SELF. DON’T LOOSE THE BATTLE SOON.. PUSH YOUR SELF TO KNOW YOUR TRUE STRENGTH.

2) AIIMS PAPER

There is Amit Ashish. also you get lot many individual books for single papers like SPEED etc.. etc.. you need to do at least 3 years of AIIMS medical papers and also.

NATIONAL BOARDS
This is an exam for the gaining entry in to the foreign universities of USA .. questions are lifted from it for AIPG. My earlier blog has a info regarding this ,, thanks ot Dr.Nilesh Kadam for that contribution.. Readers are requested to read the earlier blog.

Hmmmmm.. This BLOG has already become quote long.. So I guess need to write a new Blog in which I will be explaining the correct method of reading all these books

MSc Forensic Odontology- University of Glamorgan

The Forensic Odontology course is offered as an MSc, which will require completion of six 20-credit modules plus an additional 60-credit research project module.

Each 20-credit module runs over 6 weeks. The first 4 weeks are self-directed learning – where most of the information is given to the student online and he/she are expected to familiarise themselves with this and read around the subject. These 4 weeks are then followed by 2 weeks of directed learning during which the student will need to attend the University of Glamorgan premises for lectures, tutorials and practical sessions.

The University of Glamorgan has a structured application procedure which involves completion of a full application and references. The entry requirements for the course are a Bachelor Degree in the Dental Surgery (BDS) (or equivalent) from a recognised University and an IELTS score of 6.5 or more. The deadline for applications is usually the 1^st of March. All applications are considered after the deadline and those shortlisted will be invited for interview (which can be conducted over the phone if the student is based abroad) usually towards the end of March/beginning of April. Applicants shortlisted from the interviews are then offered a place on the course.

This year’s deadline for applications for entry in September 2011 is 1st March 2011. All applications are considered after the deadline and then shortlisted for interview. Interviews are normally towards the end of March/beginning of April. Applicants successful after the interviews will be offered a place on the course around May/June.

I believe that for VISA purposes international students may not have a part-time attendance option since regulations require international students to be resident in the UK throughout the duration of the course. Robotics in Dentistry

A dental robot has been created that can perform dental procedures, announced researchers at the 79th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research, or IADR.

Polish researchers constructed an artificial oral cavity and a robot on a 4:1 scale, so that intra- and extraoral cameras and servomechanisms could be used. Images from the cameras were transmitted via the Internet to another building, where dentists could see pictures from two movable viewpoints inside the "mouth." The dentists used joysticks and virtual reality glasses to operate handpieces and materials syringes to prepare caries for restoration, perform endodontic therapy and prepare tooth surfaces for bridges.

Dentists said they found it easy to guide the handpiece using the joystick and to control its position using the cameras.

According to IADR’s press release, saving the dentist from having to lean over could lead to employment opportunities for dentists with spinal disabilities, and the transmission of disease between the dentist and the patient is impossible when the robot is used. Also, the robot could be useful in providing dental care in countries at war or with economic problems.

The press release went on to say that researchers in Japan have built a robot system that simulates mandibular movement to aid in the diagnosis and management of temporomandibular joint disorders.

BDS student jumps to death at city college

LUCKNOW: A fourth year Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS) student at a city college jumped to death at her college in the Chinhat area on Friday. While the victim's family has accused the institute management of harassing the victim, police quoting the management, said that she was caught using unfair means while taking her internal assessments. Right after that she walked out of the examination hall situated on the second floor, and jumped out of the corridor. She died while being taken to hospital.

The college management banned media's entry inside the campus after the incident nobody from the management was ready to talk on the issue despite repeated efforts to seek their side of the story.

According to reports, Deepshikha Kannaujia was taking an internal assessment examination atSaraswati Hospital and Research Center (SHRC) when she was allegedly caught using her cellphone to download some notes related to the questions asked in the examination paper.

Parents accuse faculty of harassment

The invigilator on duty reportedly seized her answer copy and gave her a fresh copy, police said quoting the details provided to them by the SHRC management. "Deepshikha sat there for the next 15 minutes, scribbling something on the blank answer sheet before she walked out of the examination hall and jumped out of the second floor. She was breathing when people on the campus rushed to the site. Deepshikha was being taken to hospital but died on the way," the cops said.

Deepshikha's father SN Kannaujia, an engineer with the irrigation department posted at Mirzapur, who reached the city on Friday, told TOI that his daughter was being harassed by the faculty at the institute. "So much so that one of the faculty members had recently told her publicly that he would ensure that she didn't clear her exams this session," Kannaujia told TOI. Allegations are that the institute management kept the incident a closely guarded secret.

Police said that the allegations of Deepshikha's parents would be probed and action initiated on the basis of the findings thereon. Body of Deepshikha was sent for post-mortem examination. Police said institute has also been asked to keep her last answer sheet secured just in case it is required for the purpose of investigations

Apple a day may keep the dentist close

An apple a day might well keep the doctor away, but the dentist is another matter.

Eating apples and other acidic fruit, as well as drinking fruit juices, is roughly four times more potentially harmful to teeth than drinking pop, according to a study published by the U.K.’s Journal of Dentistry.

Surveying more than 1,000 men and women aged 18 to 30, the study found that apple eaters were 3.7 times more likely to suffer damage to their dentine (the layer of the tooth inside the enamel).

At the same time, it was shown that fruit juice was four times as damaging as pop, and lager beer three times as harmful.

The research also showed that the speed of consumption was a factor.

“Doctors quite rightly say that eating apples is good, but if you eat them slowly the high acidity levels can damage your teeth,” said study leader David Bartlett, a professor at the King’s Dental Institute. “The drinks most often associated with associated with dietary erosion, particularly cola, showed no increased risk in this study.”

“The results emphasize that dietary advice should be targeted at strong acids rather than some of the commonly consumed soft drinks.”

The researchers did not advise giving up otherwise healthful fruits and juices, but recommended making short work of their consumption.

“Snacking on acidic foods throughout the day is the most damaging, whilst eating them at meal times is much safer,” Bartlett said. “It’s not what you eat, it’s how you eat it. An apple a day is good, but taking all day to eat the apple can damage teeth.”

Dr. Harry F. Hoediono, president of the Ontario Dental Association, responded to the study by stressing the healthful benefits of apples, but advised rinsing the mouth with water after eating fruit to neutralize the acid.

“Also, don’t clean your teeth right after eating,” he said. “If you brush while the acid is still in your mouth you are removing some of your teeth’s surface. If you wait about an hour, the saliva helps remineralize the enamel and makes the enamel more resistant to acid attack.”

Dentistry in Australia

Australia has a federal system of government, comprising a Federal Government (at the national level) and six State and two Territory governments. From 01 July 2010 (and for Western Australia from 18 October 2010), a new national registration and accreditation scheme for the health professions, including dentistry, commenced operation across Australia, replacing separate legislation covering registration in each State and Territory.

To practise dentistry in Australia you must be registered with the Dental Board of Australia. The steps you need to take to obtain registration in
Australia are explained below.

Dentists work in general practice or specialise in one of the following principal fields: Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Periodontics and Prosthodontics.

Dentists trained in Australia must meet the entry requirements of one of the Australian institutions offering dental courses, and then complete the required full-time academic training (four or five years) leading to a dental degree. If dentists wish to specialise, they must complete extra study after having had clinical experience.

The Universities of Adelaide, Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney and Western Australia and Griffith University all offer dental degree courses. The accredited qualifications awarded by these universities are approved for registration by the Dental Board of Australia. La Trobe University (Bendigo, Victoria), Charles Sturt University (Orange, NSW) and James Cook University (Cairns, Queensland) have commenced new programs with currently enrolled students. There are three ways in which overseas qualified dentists can enter the profession in Australia: by enrolling at an Australian dental school where they may be granted some credit for previous study, by recognition of their overseas qualifications, or by successfully completing the Australian Dental Council (ADC) examinations.
Overseas Qualifications Acceptable for Registration
Dentists with a Bachelor degree obtained from the United Kingdom or Ireland, or Canada (after 31 March 2010), may have qualifications which may be acceptable for registration in Australia.
Under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Arrangement (TTMRA) individuals registered or licensed to practise an occupation in New Zealand are entitled to practise the equivalent occupation in any Australian State and Territory, and visa versa. The TTMRA applies irrespective of where training was undertaken.
As the acceptability of any dental qualification may change from time to time, you should seek up-to-date information from the Au stralian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority.
Overseas Qualifications Not Acceptable for Registration
If your qualifications do not meet requirements for registration to practise in Australia, there are two options available to you. The first is to complete an Australian dental degree course at an Australian university.
The second option is to undertake the examination procedure conducted by the ADC described below.

ADC Examinations
The Australian Dental Council (ADC) is the organisation responsible for assessing overseas trained dentists to enable them to obtain registration in Australia. The ADC also accredits Australian Dental Schools courses leading to registrable qualifications. The dental boards, the dental schools, the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, the Australian Dental Association, the Australian Dental & Oral Health Therapists Association and the Dental Hygienists Association of Australia are represented on the ADC.
Eligibility criteria
Overseas trained dentists are eligible to undertake the ADC examination procedure if they have completed and passed a dental degree which included at least four years' full-time academic study at a university recognised by the ADC and are registered as a dentist in their country of training or practice.
Immune Status
Australian dental institutions are committed to, and have a responsibility to ensure that staff and patients are safeguarded.
Prior to giving an ADC candidate access to clinical facilities for examination purposes, dental hospitals may require a routine assessment of disease history and immune status. This is already in place in some States.
Immunisation, immune response to immunisation, and disease history for tuberculosis, rubella, measles, mumps, chickenpox, herpes simplex virus, and hepatitis B virus may need to be documented.
Some States require that health care workers should be immunised for Hepatitis B and have demonstrated levels of immunity. All operators who will treat patients will be expected to not pose a risk of Hep B transmission to patients or staff. In some States a copy of dates of records of completed Hep B immunisations and of serological screen, to confirm immunity, must be provided prior to an examination. All information provided to the dental hospital remains confidential.
Candidates should ensure that they know their status and advise the ADC if they anticipate that they may not be able to meet the hospitals’ requirements.
Examination Procedures
The ADC examination procedures have been developed specifically to assess the qualifications of overseas trained dentists whose qualifications are not accepted as a basis for registration by Australian Dental Boards.
The examination procedure consists of three parts an Occupational English Test (OET); a Preliminary Examination (Multiple Choice Questions and Short Answer questions); and a Final Examination(Clinical). These must be taken sequentially.
Occupational English Test (OET)
All overseas trained dentists (regardless of country of training) are required to pass the Occupational English Test (OET) for healthcare professionals, prior to acceptance into the Australian Dental Council examinations. Exemptions are not granted.
The Occupational English Test is designed to assess a candidate’s understanding and use of English in the professional workplace. It tests both written and spoken English in four categories: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

All four categories must be passed at an ‘A’ or ‘B’ level to achieve an overall acceptable pass in the test.
All four categories must be passed in a single sitting.

The result of the test helps determine whether a candidate’s general level of English is sufficiently high to enable them to practise dentistry in Australia. Difficulties with this test should alert the candidate to the possibility of difficulties with the later stages of the ADC examinations.
Note:

No other English tests are accepted by the ADC.
A pass in the OET is valid for two years only.
Candidates are required to hold a valid OET pass at the closing date for applications for each exam stage, ie at Preliminary and at Final Exam.

Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination is a written examination in multiple choice and short written answer format. It is designed to test your knowledge of the practice of dentistry and of clinical and technical procedures as they are practised in Australia. Previous examination papers are not available, but sample multiple choice questions are made available to enrolled candidates.
Unlimited attempts are permitted for this examination. A pass is valid for three years. In order to be eligible to attempt the Preliminary Examination, at the closing date for the exam you must have a satisfactory pass in the OET (valid for two years).
Final Examination - Clinical
In order to be eligible to sit for the Final Examination, at the closing date for the exam you must have passed the Preliminary Examination (pass valid for 3 years) and have a satisfactory pass in the OET (valid for two years).
The examinations are grouped into two series each year, a ‘July series’ and a ‘November series’. Scheduling for the examination sessions within each series may be over a period of months, as negotiated from time to time by the ADC with the participating venues.
Candidates may apply to sit the Final Examination within either the July series or November series. After the closing date candidates will be allocated to a specific examination session and venue in accordance with the following priority system:

candidates making their first attempt at the examination have priority over repeat attempt candidates
for first attempt candidates, preference for less time elapsed since passing the Preliminary Examination
preference for candidates with higher scores in the Preliminary Examination
preference for candidates with fewer repeat attempts.

An exception to the above priority system applies to candidates in thePublic Sector Dental Workforce Scheme, who are given priority ahead of all other candidates.
Candidates are notified of the examination session to which they have been allocated at least one month before the examination session. There is no provision for candidates to nominate a particular venue or date for their examination session.
The Final Examination is held over a full clinical week. The Examination is designed to test the clinical competence of the candidate in terms of dental knowledge, clinical skills and professional attitudes for the safe and effective clinical practice of dentistry in the Australian community. The examination is at the level of newly qualified graduates of Australian dental schools.
The Final Examination includes the principal clinical disciplines grouped into three sections:
Clinical Dentistry 1 (CD1)       Operative Dentistry including endodontics
                                               Fixed Prosthodontics
                                               Paediatric Dentistry
Clinical Dentistry 2 (CD2)        Periodontics
                                               Removable Prosthodontics
                                               Treatment planning
Clinical Dentistry 3 (CD3)       Oral Surgery
                                               Oral Diagnosis
                                               Oral Radiology and Radiography
                                               Infection Control
Aspects of other clinical disciplines such as Orthodontics, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Pharmacology and Preventive Dentistry may also be included within the sections.
Examination Venues and Training
If you live overseas, you may take the OET and the ADC Preliminary Examination at an overseas venue. Availability of venues varies and some venues may not be available for a particular session. All visa and travel arrangements are the responsibility of the candidate. Candidates should ensure that they are able to travel to the nominated venue. If you are in Australia, you can sit both these examinations in any of the State capital cities and some larger provincial centres.
The Preliminary Examination is usually held in the first week of March and in the first week of September each year. You are allowed unlimited attempts at this examination, but a new fee must be paid for each attempt.
The Final Examination is held only in Australia. Candidates resident outside Australia may be able to obtain a temporary entry visa, at their own expense, to cover the trip to Australia to attend the examination. You are allowed unlimited attempts at this Examination, but a new fee must be paid for each attempt.
ADC Certificate
An ADC Certificate is issued upon successful completion of the ADC examination procedure. The ADC Certificate entitles you to apply for registration with any of the Australian Dental Boards.

Each fee for the OET, ADC Preliminary and ADC Final Examination allows only one attempt at the examination. Withdrawal from any examination may result in a cancellation fee being charged.

Appeals
Results for all candidates are reviewed by the panel of examiners after the Final Examination session and confirmed by a meeting of the Examinations Committee prior to release. The decision of the Committee is final. Candidates may submit an appeal to the ADC only if they believe that the procedural requirements (as specified in the current ADCInformation Handbook for Dentistry Candidates and in formal communications with the ADC Secretariat and in the instructions for specific examination sessions) were not followed in a significant way or to a significant extent, or if their performance was impaired by significant deficiencies in the examination procedures beyond their control. The Committee cannot change a fail grade to a pass grade or exempt a candidate from any other requirements of the Final Examination. Contact the ADC Office if you want to be sent a copy of the appeals guidelines. Appeals must be lodged within 28 days of notification of the results of the examination. A fee applies for appeals.

Dr F Pfeffer

Friedrich "Fritz" Pfeffer (30 April 1889 – 20 December 1944) was a German dentist and Jewish refugee who hid with Anne Frank during the Nazi Occupation of the Netherlands, and who perished in the Neuengamme concentration camp in Northern Germany. In Anne Frank's posthumously published diary all names, apart from those of the Frank family, were changed to preserve the privacy of individuals mentioned. Pfeffer was given the pseudonym Albert Dussel.

Dr Samual Benis

Dr. Samuel A. Bemis (1793 - 1881) was one of the earliest photographers in the United States. A small number of his daguerreotypes have survived. Bemis was a Boston dentist when in April 1840 he acquired an early camera and became one of the first Americans to take a photograph. His extant daguerreotypes include views of Boston and of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. These images are the earliest known American photographs of natural landscapes.

Jan ''La Grand'' Boubli

Jan "Le Grand" Boubli (born November 13) is a French professional poker player from Paris. Jan Boubli was a dentist for 22 years before retiring. In July 2003 he finished second at the World Poker Tour (WPT) second season Grand Prix de Paris. In September 2005 he won the European Poker Tour (EPT) second season Barcelona Open. He defeated Christer Johansson heads-up to win €426,000 ($528,195). As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings exceed $1,200,000.

Edgar Buchanan

Edgar Buchanan (March 20, 1903 – April 4, 1979) was an American actor with a long career in both film and television, most familiar today as Uncle Joe Carson from the Petticoat Junction, Green Acres and Beverly Hillbillies television sitcoms of the 1960s. As Uncle Joe, "who is moving kinda slow", he took over as proprietor of the Shady Rest Hotel following the death of Bea Benaderet, who had played Kate Bradley. However before becoming a successful actor Edgar was a successful dentist like his father before him.

Dipak Nanalal Chudasama, born 20 May 1963 in Mombasa, was a Kenyan cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman. (Perhaps mistakenly) known as "The Doc", Chudasama was, as well as being a cricketer, a fully-qualified orthodontist. Having made his debut as early on as 1980, Chudasama represented Kenya at the 1996 World Cup, and the 1990, 1994 and 1997 ICC Trophies. In all, he played in 20 One-Day International matches. His top innings score was a stylish 122 against Bangladesh in Nairobi, a then-record opening partnership for the nation of Kenya.Chudasama has toured several countries in Asia and Africa, as well as Holland.

Martin Van Butchell

Martin van Butchell (1735–1814)was an eccentric British dentist who put his dead wife on display, reputedly because of a clause in a marriage contract. Butchell became a dentist in the 1760s London. He advertised in St. James's Chronicle with a text: "Real or Artificial Teeth from one to an entire set, with superlative gold pivots or springs, also gums, sockets and palate formed, fitted, finished and fixed without drawing stumps, or causing pain.’’ When his wife Mary died on January 14, 1775, he decided to have her embalmed and turn her into an attraction to draw more customers. He contacted his teacher of surgery and anatomy Dr. William Hunter and Dr. William Cruikshank who agreed to do the job.

GReeeeN is a Japanesepop/rock/hip hop/breakbeatvocal group from Kōriyama city in Fukushima prefecture, comprising the all-male four members Hide, Navi, 92, and Soh. They made their debut with Universal Musicin 2007. Their logo image is of a mouthful of teeth, and the four e's indicate the number of members. The sound production is handled by Hide's older brother JIN, a former guitarist of Pay money To my Pain. According to their website at Universal Music Japan, their catch phrase is "Rock'n'Breakbeatswith Four Microphones". One notable characteristic is that none of the members have ever shown their faces in the public sphere as a part of GReeeeN, whether in theirpromotional videos,CDs, television performances, or theInternet. In their only performance onTV-U Fukushima's music show Music Bar Palo Palo (broadcast on January 19, 2007), the group even went as far as censoring their faces during the performance. GReeeeN cites keeping their professional lives indentistrycompatible with their musical ventures as the reason, but one of the members, Hide, has hinted that after all of the members pass the prefectural examination in dentistry and receive permission from the directors of the hospitals they work for, the group may consider a public appearance. All members studied at the dentistry department atOhu University, in Fukushima prefecture, (Hide, Navi, and 92 have all graduated, only Soh is still in school), and the group debuted while still in school in 2007.

Chapin Aaron Harris A.M., M.D., D.D.S. (May 6, 1806 in Pompey, N.Y. - September 29, 1860 in Baltimore, Maryland) was an American physician and dentist and dentistry school founder. Harris is considered one of the founding members of the profession of Dentistry in the United States of America, father of American dental science, and a pioneer of dental journalism. He has been inducted in the hall of fame of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Peter Kunter

Peter Kunter (born 28 April 1941 in Berlin, Germany) is a former professional football goalkeeper. Playing for Eintracht Wetzlar Peter Kunter was capped for the German youth national team in 1958, amassing nine appearances. Afterwards he played four times for the amateur national team. From 1961 on Kunter studied dentistry, sports and German studies in Freiburg while playing for second tier Freiburger FC. In 1965 he moved to Eintracht Frankfurt, amassing 234 Bundesliga games and 17 games in DFB-Pokal and UEFA Cup/Cup Winners Cup. In December 1969 he received a doctorate of dentistry. He played in the final of the first DFB-Pokal win of the eagles in 1974 against the Hamburger SV. The next time one year later against MSV Duisburg he was a substitute.

Dr Markus Merk

Dr. Markus Merk (born March 15, 1962 in Kaiserslautern) is a former top-level German football referee as well as a dentist. He is a six-time winner of the German Referee of the Year Award and the record holder in games refereed in the Bundesliga. In 2005, Merk was awarded the German Bundesverdienstkreuz (Federal Cross of Merit) in recognition of his service to football and his charity work in India. He ended his career by refereeing the match between Bayern München and Hertha BSC Berlin on the last day of the Bundesliga season 2007/08 on May 17, 2008. He is considered to be one of the best referees to ever officiate, being ranked 2nd behind Pierluigi Collina, in the all-time rankings

BVDA was established by a group of Veterinary Surgeons who had a particular interest in Veterinary dentistry in 1988. The aims of the association are to educate and train Veterinary and Dental Surgeons in animal dentistry and to promote practice, teaching and research of animal dentistry.

Each year the British Veterinary Dental Association holds a scientific meeting where there are papers presented on veterinary dentistry, interactive sessions and state of the art lectures. This also gives the membership a chance to socialise and talk about particular cases.

The association has an active membership that undertakes teaching of dentistry to Veterinary Surgeons, students and nurses. This teaching takes the form of courses and study groups. The membership is also involved with promoting veterinary dentistry to the public highlighting the importance of good oral care.
