Viva Circus Festival Returns in 2026, Marking 20 Years of Building Malaysia’s Aerial Arts Movement

A five-day celebration of contemporary circus, aerial performance and community experiences to grow Malaysia’s aerial arts ecosystem

Viva Vertical today officially unveiled Viva Circus Festival 2026, a five-day celebration of aerial arts, circus performance and immersive public experiences taking place from 15 to 19 April at Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre (PJPAC), 1 Utama E. The announcement was made during a press conference attended by industry voices, including Malaysian singer-actress, Dr Soo Wincci, alongside aerial arts practitioners and creative professionals.

Marking two decades of building Malaysia’s aerial movement community, the festival reflects Viva Vertical’s journey from a training studio into a platform that nurtures talent and connects Malaysian performers to regional and international opportunities.

“Viva Circus Festival is not just about aerial as fitness. It is about how performance transforms people, physically, mentally and emotionally,” said Nana Shan Liew, Director of Viva Vertical. “For the past 20 years, we have seen how aerial arts build confidence, discipline and self-expression. This festival brings that journey from the studio to the stage.”

Globally, the wellness economy reached US$6.3 trillion in 2023, reflecting growing interest in movement experiences that support both physical and mental well-being. The festival comes at a time when people are increasingly seeking movement that blends fitness, creativity and personal expression.

Bringing Aerial Arts From Studio to Stage

Founded in 2006, Viva Vertical is Malaysia’s first dedicated circus school and home to the Viva Circus troupe, known for its strong standards in both performance and safety. The troupe has performed across Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong, gaining recognition for its creativity and technical expertise.

Building on this foundation, Viva Circus Festival 2026 returns with a programme that brings together performances, competitions and public experiences, showcasing Malaysia’s growing aerial arts scene. Highlights include the original Viva Circus production Alice Lost in Wonderland, the 2026 Viva Circus Festival Awards Malaysia (VCFA), and immersive aerial experiences for the public.

For the first time, the VCFA will exclusively celebrate local aerial and pole talent who are Malaysian or residing in Malaysia, spotlighting homegrown performers and strengthening the local aerial arts community.

The festival will also premiere Viva Circus Production – Alice Lost in Wonderland, an original show that blends storytelling, choreography and aerial performance.

“Alice Lost in Wonderland is a celebration of imagination and transformation,” said Noah Yap, Show & Artistic Director of Alice Lost in Wonderland. “The production brings together seasoned performers and emerging talents, creating a space where experience guides new voices. It reflects what Viva stands for, using performance to nurture growth, creativity and confidence.”

New this year is the introduction of the Safe to Fly experience, which expands the festival beyond stage performances and invites the public to explore aerial movement in a safe and guided environment.

Building Malaysia’s Aerial Arts Ecosystem

Beyond performances and competitions, Viva Circus Festival reflects Viva Vertical’s broader mission to strengthen Malaysia’s aerial arts ecosystem. Over the past 20 years, the studio has nurtured performers, trained instructors and created platforms for Malaysian aerial talent to grow and connect with international opportunities.

As part of these efforts, Viva Vertical is currently in the process of applying to the relevant authorities to establish a national aerial sports association.

“Ultimately, Viva Circus Festival is about creating opportunities,” Nana added. “Opportunities for people to discover aerial movement, for performers to develop their craft, and for Malaysian talent to be recognised beyond our borders.”

During the press conference, Viva Vertical also hosted a fireside chat featuring Nana Shan Liew, Director of Viva Vertical; Noah Yap, Show & Artistic Director of Alice Lost in Wonderland; Kayleen Ortiz, international Pole Champion and Creative Director of Polecats Manila; and Dr. Soo Wincci, Malaysian singer-actress. The discussion explored how aerial arts training, performance and creative production can nurture talent beyond the studio while strengthening Malaysia’s growing aerial arts ecosystem.

“The Chain of Civilization — Digital Intangible Cultural Heritage Co-creation Initiative” Makes Global Overseas Debut in Kuala Lumpur

● Malaysia becomes the first overseas host country for the initiative, with the exhibition running until 1 March 2026.

● More than 40 original works are showcased, featuring National Intangible Cultural Heritage inheritor Zhou Shuying and contemporary artist Cui Xiaoqing, presenting traditional craftsmanship through a contemporary visual language.

● The exhibition features an immersive “Cube” digital space, a live Master Work3station demonstration, and an AI interactive experience zone, alongside a cultural exchange between Chinese paper-cutting and Malaysian batik artisans.

The “Chain of Civilization – Digital Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Co-Creation Initiative” marked its global first overseas stop in Kuala Lumpur today at LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre (also known as LaLaport BBCC). As the initiative’s debut outside China, Malaysia serves as its inaugural international host. The exhibition is open to the public from 27 February to 1 March 2026.

The “Chain of Civilization – Digital Intangible Cultural Heritage Co-creation Initiative” is one of the key international cultural exchange programmes for 2025. With the concept of a “chain” at its core, the project symbolises the interconnectedness and shared development of civilisations. It is designed to roll out in different countries under annual thematic chapters. By fusing digital innovation with heritage traditions, the initiative aims to shape a new “cultural gateway” for the contemporary era, presenting Chinese culture through innovative expressions, fostering mutual learning among civilisations, and establishing a new marker for cultural exchange.

Titled “Chinese Visions on Paper”, the exhibition centres on Yuxian paper-cutting, a recognised National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China. Through digital technology and immersive spatial design, the showcase highlights how traditional craftsmanship can be reinterpreted in a contemporary context, while adding fresh momentum to Malaysia–China cultural exchanges.

Using Intangible Heritage as a Bridge for Malaysia–China Cultural Exchange

Paper-cutting embodies the essence of Eastern wisdom and serves as a vessel carrying the centuries-old exchanges between China and Malaysia. Today, paper-cutting has become a regular feature of cultural exchanges between our two countries. Today’s event is not merely a showcase of a Chinese intangible cultural heritage craft, but a continuation of a cultural bond that transcends mountains and seas. We hope digital technology can become a powerful wing for the transmission of intangible heritage, enabling Malaysian traditional culture to reach China, and allowing China’s intangible cultural treasures to connect with Malaysian youth. said Zheng Xuefang, Minister of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Malaysia

Mr Zhu Xiaojian, Director of the Cultural Heritage Protection and Utilisation Committee, China Arts Development Association noted that paper-cutting is more than a folk art form. “It carries people’s aspirations for a better life and symbolises blessings of harmony and reunion. The vitality of intangible heritage depends not only on preservation, but also on effective dissemination. In the digital era, the integration of heritage and technology opens up new pathways for cultural communication,” he said.

He added that the programme seeks to present Chinese ICH through digital visuals, online engagement and immersive experiences, making it more accessible and relatable to overseas audiences.

Over 40 Works Reflect Contemporary Expressions of Eastern Aesthetics

The exhibition presents more than 40 original works, including the “Twelve Zodiac” and “Flora & Fauna of Fortune” series by Zhou Shuying, a third-generation inheritor of Yuxian paper-cutting.

Having trained under her father from a young age, Zhou has mastered traditional techniques such as sketching, carving and colouring. Building on this foundation, she continues to innovate, extending paper-cutting from traditional decorative window art into contemporary thematic works and public art spaces.

The showcase also features works from contemporary artist Cui Xiaoqing’s “Thousand-Pattern Project”. By reinterpreting Chinese character structures and traditional paper-cut patterns, the series explores the relationship between folk art and modern design language, offering a new contemporary lens on intangible heritage.

Immersive Installations and Interactive Experiences

Moving beyond a conventional static exhibition format, the event introduces an immersive “Cube” digital space. Through light projections and moving visuals, visitors can experience the intricate details and aesthetics of paper-cutting in a multi-sensory environment.

At the centre of the exhibition, a “Master Workstation” allows visitors to observe live demonstrations of traditional processes, including sketching, cutting and colouring. This provides the public with a rare opportunity to witness the craftsmanship up close.

An AI Interactive Greeting Card zone further blends tradition with technology, enabling visitors to create personalised digital artworks inspired by paper-cut motifs and instantly generate customised images.

On the opening day, National Intangible Cultural Heritage inheritor Zhou Shuying and a Malaysian batik master conducted a joint sharing session, highlighting similarities and exchanges in motifs, colours and handcraft techniques between the two traditional art forms.

“The intangible cultural heritage not only strengthens cultural exchange between Malaysia and China, but also has strong potential within the cultural tourism sector,” said Mr Lee Thai Hung, Deputy Director-General, Tourism Malaysia. “Culture serves as an important bond between our two countries and a bridge that fosters harmony and mutual understanding. Through these intangible heritage arts, people can gain a deeper appreciation of each other’s cultures, allowing Malaysia–China relations to grow stronger and closer,” he added.

Assalamualaikum ibu bapa dan adik-adik Tahun 5. Peperiksaan UPKK dah tak lama lagi kan? Adik-adik sudah bersedia ke? Sebelum tu, kepada para pembaca yang ingin tahu apakah itu UPKK, PA akan terangkan serba sedikit mengenai UPKK.

APAKAH ITU UPKK

UPKK merupakan singkatan kepada Ujian Penilaian Kelas KAFA. Ianya dikendalikan oleh Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) untuk para pelajar Tahun 5 yang mengikuti kelas KAFA (Kelas Al-Quran dan Fardhu Ain) di seluruh Malaysia. Penilaian adalah berdasarkan kepada pembelajaran dari Tahun 1 hingga Tahun 5. Matapelajaran yang dinilai adalah sebagaimana berikut :-

1. Al-Quran - dinilai dari segi tahap kemahiran membaca dan hafazan.

2. Ulum Syariah - Iaitu Aqidah (kepercayaan) dan Ibadah (cara perlaksanaan).

3. Sirah - Sejarah hidup Nabi Muhammad SAW dan para sahabat Nabi.

4. Adab - Penilaian terhadap penghayatan nilai-nilai Islam dalam kehidupan.

5. Lughah Al-Quran - Pengenalan kepada asas Bahasa Arab

6. Jawi & Khat - Penulisan jawi dan seni khat.

7. Amali Solat - Ujian praktikal solat.

KEPENTINGAN UPKK

UPKK diadakan bertujuan untuk memberikan sijil pengiktirafan kepada murid-murid yang telah mempelajari pengajian agama. Ianya sama penting seperti PMR dan UPSR tetapi hanya untuk para pelajar KAFA sahaja. Sijil yang diberikan merupakan tiket untuk para pelajar menyambung ke perinkat pengajian agama yang lebih tinggi lagi seperti sekolah menengah agama, sekolah berasrama penuh, sekolah agama persekutuan dan juga sekolah tahfiz.

Selain daripada itu, ianya juga dapat menghasilkan generasi yang seimbang bagi menghasilkan warganegara yang berilmu, berakhlak mulia dan berpegang teguh kepada ajaran agama Islam.

UPKK dibahagikan kepada :-

1. Ujian Amali & Penghayatan - Bulan April hingga September

2. Ujian Hafazan - Bulan Ogos

3. Ujian Al-Quran - Bulan September hingga Oktober

4. Ujian Bertulis - Bulan November

TIPS PERSEDIAAN CALON UPKK

Beberapa cadangan untuk adik-adik yang akan menduduki UPKK:-

1. Semak tarikh dan jadual peperiksaan supaya tidak terlepas ujian amali dan bertulis

2. Fahamkan sukatan pelajaran setiap subjek daripada apa yang diajarkan oleh guru, buku teks dan juga modul tambahan.

3. Fokuskan kepada subjek yang lemah berdasarkan ujian dan maklumbalas guru.

4. Buat latihan secara berterusan daripada soalan-soalan tahun lepas dan kuiz dalam talian.

5. Buat latihan amali secara berterusan dan konsisten.

6. Pengurusan masa ketika menjawab soalan. Jangan ambil masa terlalu lama pada satu soalan.

7. Pastikan cukup tidur dan jaga kesihatan.

FORMAT PEPERIKSAAN

Beberapa aspek penting perlu diambil maklum oleh adik-adik:-

1. Untuk Amali, dilakukan secara langsung di bawah pemerhatian guru dan panel peperiksaan.

2. Untuk Ujian Bertulis - Masa diambil adalah 1 Jam 15 minit bagi setiap kertas bertulis.

3. Untuk Ujian PCHI dan Amali Solat akan mengambil masa yang lama dan bukan dalam satu hari sahaja untuk selesai.

MISI STRAIGHT A UPKK, FLYHIGH EDUCATION CENTRE

Merupakan program bimbingan / seminar / kelas ulangkaji khas yang dianjurkan oleh Flyhigh Education Centre bagi membantu adik-adik yang akan menduduki UPKK untuk mendapatkan keputusan cemerlang A Penuh (Straight A). Flyhigh Education menyediakan latihan intensif, teknik menjawab soalan, pengurusan masa dan juga memfokuskan kepada pemahaman konsep. Modul yang disediakan adalah termasuk teori dan amali. Kelas yang disediakan adalah secara bersemuka dan di atas talian.

Antara kelas yang disediakan :-

1. Kelas Meroket UPKK - Latihan secara intensif dan pengurusan masa, nota dan rakaman disediakan.

2. Kelas Gempur UPKK - Kelas ulangkaji Tahun 3 hingga Tahun 5, teknik mudah ingat dan latih tubi soalan tahun-tahun sebelum dan simulasi soalan sebenar.

3. Kelas VIP UPKK - Bimbingan secara ekslusif, teknik KBAT dan penilaian prestasi bulanan.

4. Kelas Bahasa Arab & Al-Quran - Memfokuskan kepada pengajian Bahasa Arab dan Bacaan Al-Quran.

Kelebihan Program :-

Di Flyhigh Education Centre, guru-guru dan tenaga pengajarnya adalah sangat berpengalaman dalam pengajaran UPKK termasuklah Guru Besar Cemerlang negeri Selangor iaitu Ustaz Mohamad Azhari Bin Sulaiman Al-Haj yang merupakan salah seorang tenaga pengajar di Flyhigh Education. Modulnya juga adalah interaktif dan disampaikan dengan teknik yang sangat mudah difahami. Latihan secara praktikal dan teori disediakan supaya para pelajar tidak hanya memahaminya hanya secara teori sahaja. Selain daripada itu, rakaman kelas juga disediakan untuk para pelajar dapat mengulangkaji pada bila-bila masa sahaja.

4. Lokasi / Platform - Sama ada sesi bersemuka di pusat tuisyen atau secara atas talian.

5. Rekod / Testimoni - Rujuk kepada calon-calon sebelum yang telah berjaya di dalam program.

DEFINISI PSRA

PSRA adalah merupakan Penilaian Sekolah Rendah Agama yang dikhususkan untuk pelajar Tahun 6 yang mengambil aliran Pendidikan Agama Islam di Sekolah Rendah Agama (SRA) dan Sekolah Agama Rakyat (SAR) di bawah pengelolaan Jabatan Agama Islam setiap negeri. Namun demikian, setiap negeri tidak menggunakan nama yang sama. Sebagai contoh, Wilayah Persekutuan menggunakan nama UPRA, negeri Perak menggunakan UPSRA manakala Selangor menggunakan PSRA. Walaubagaimanapun, konsepnya masih tetap sama iaitu menilai tahap penguasaan pelajar dalam mata pelajaran agama.

TUJUAN DAN KEPENTINGAN PSRA

Tujuan utama PSRA ini diadakan adalah untuk :

1. Menilai Penguasaan Ilmu Agama Islam

Penilaian adalah berdasarkan kepada subjek-subjek seperti Tauhid, Feqah, Ibadah, Sirah Nabi, Akhlak, Tilawah al-Quran dan Jawi serta Khat.

2. Penilaian Standard Bagi Pendidikan Agama Rendah

Sebagai penanda aras bagi mengukur pencapaian pelajar dalam sistem pendidikan agama yang dikelolakan oleh Jabatan Agama Islam setiap negeri. Ianya juga bagi membantu pihak sekolah dan jabatan agama dalam merancang penambahbaikan kurikulum dan pengajaran.

3. Melanjutkan Pelajaran Ke Peringkat Lebih Tinggi

Pelajar yang lulus PSRA akan diberikan Sijil Tamat Pendidikan Agama Rendah bagi menyatakan bahawa mereka telah menamatkan pendidikan agama di peringkat rendah. Sijil ini dijadikan asas untuk mereka membuat permohonan ke Sekolah Menengah Agama (SMA). Bagi sesetengah negeri, PSRA ini dijadikan sebagai kriteria kemasukan ke sekolah menengah agama, tahfiz dan juga institusi agama berasrama penuh seperti Maahad.

4. Sebagai Galakan Kepada Pelajar dan Ibu Bapa

Ianya dapat memberikan galakan dan motivasi kepada para pelajar untuk menguasai ilmu agama secara serius semenjak dari kecil. Selain daripada itu, ia juga dapat meyakinkan ibu bapa terhadap pencapaian anak-anak di dalam aspek pendidikan agama.

EXAM PSRA, BILAKAH TARIKH PEPERIKSAAN PSRA DIADAKAN

Kebiasaanya Exam PSRA ini diadakan pada bulan September setiap tahun. Walaubagaimanapun, tarikh sebenar akan diumumkan dan disahkan secara rasmi oleh Jabatan Agama Islam setiap negeri. Format exam adalah secara dasarnya adalah sama di setiap negeri cuma diolah mengikut kesesuaian negeri masing-masing. Berikut adalah contoh format Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor:-

Jenis Soalan Dalam Kertas Bertulis:

Objektif : Soalan dalam aneka pilihan (ABC), isi tempat kosong dan juga padankan jawapan.

Subjektif : Jawapan pendek, struktur dan esei pendek.

Amali/Lisan : Hafazan, tilawah, wuduk dan solat dilakukan secara individu bersama pemeriksa.

Tempoh Masa peperiksaan biasanya mengambil masa antara 1 hingga 1.5 jam untuk setiap kertas peperiksaan manakala bagi peperiksaan Amali/Lisan akan diadakan secara berasingan daripada peperiksaan secara bertulis. Kebiasaanya sama ada seminggu sebelum atau seminggu selepas peperiksaan secara bertulis diadakan.

Para pelajar yang akan menduduki peperiksaan PSRA ini sudah semestinya akan berusaha untuk mendapatkan keputusan cemerlang atau dalam bahasa Arabnya disebut MUMTAZ iaitu keputusan dengan gred tertinggi.

APAKAH CABARAN PELAJAR DALAM MENGHADAPI PSRA

Antara cabaran yang sering dihadapi oleh pelajar :

1. Banyak Subjek dan Topik

PSRA melibatkan banyak mata pelajaran agama seperti Tauhid, Feqah, Sirah, Akhlak, Ibadah, Tilawah, Hafazan, Jawi, Khat dan juga amali. Sukatan yang padat ini boleh menyebabkan pelajar mudah rasa terbeban.

2. Kefahaman Bahasa Arab dan Jawi

Banyak soalan dan istilah di dalam PSRA menggunakan Bahasa Arab atau Jawi menyebabkan para pelajar yang kurang mahir akan sukar untuk memahaminya. Tulisan Jawi ini memerlukan ketekunan dan latihan bagi memahirkannya.

3. Hafazan dan Amali

Kesukaran pelajar di dalam menghafal surah-surah dan doa serta praktikal ibadah (solat dan wuduk) memerlukan latihan secara berterusan dan bimbingan di rumah dan di sekolah.

4. Tekanan Masa

PSRA kebiasaannya dilaksanakan pada tahun yang sama dengan UPSR / kelas akademik penting. Pelajar perlu membahagikan masa antara pelajaran agama dengan pelajaran akademik seperti Matematik, Sains, Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Inggeris dan lain-lain. Namun demikian, dengan pemansuhan UPSR berkuatkuasa tahun 2021 sedikit sebanyak telah dapat meringankan bebanan pelajar.

5. Tekanan Emosi dan Prestasi

Ramai pelajar rasa takut gagal tidak dapat mencapai gred Mumtaz selain daripada tekanan daripada guru, ibu bapa dan rakan sebaya.

6. Kurang Akses Kepada Sumber Pembelajaran

Bukan semua pelajar mempunyai akses kepada modul latihan, buku rujukan berkualiti dan kelas tambahan agama menyebabkan mereka belajar secara kendiri tanpa sokongan guru terlatih. Ini menjadikan mereka sukar dalam memahami tajuk-tajuk yang kompleks.

7. Kurang Minat dan Motivasi

Sesetengah daripada pelajar beranggapan subjek agama merupakan 'subjek kedua' dan mereka tidak memberikan tumpuan yang setara dengan subjek-subjek akademik. Akhirnya mereka kurang persediaan dan mendapat keputusan yang kurang memuaskan.

TIPS DAN STRATEGI BERSAMA USTAZ AZHARI SULAIMAN, GURU CEMERLANG SELANGOR

Menurut Ustaz Mohamad Azhari Bin Sulaiman Al Haj, seorang Guru Cemerlang Selangor, persediaan awal dan latihan soalan-soalan tahun lepas sangat dapat membantu para pelajar dalam menghadapi exam PSRA. Keyakinan pelajar akan dapat ditingkatkan disebabkan oleh kesediaan dan persiapan mereka.

Antara Tips dan Strategi Ustaz Azhari Sulaiman :

1. Nota Ringkas dan Padat

Ustaz Azhari menyarankan untuk menulis nota menggunakan ayat sendiri supaya pelajar lebih memahami dan mengingati. Highlightkan point-point penting dan tajuk-tajuk yang kerap keluar di dalam PSRA. Gunakan carta, peta minda dan senarai semak supaya mudah untuk ulang semula.

2. Buat Ulangkaji Awal dan Konsisten

Bahagikan masa belajar di antara subjek agama dan latihan amali seperti Tilawah, Hafazan, Solat, Jawi dan Khat. Mulakan ulangkaji lebih awal sama ada beberapa minggu atau beberapa bulan lebih awal. Jangan tunggu sehingga saat akhir untuk mengulangkaji.

3. Teknik Menjawab Soalan (Objektif dan Subjektif)

Untuk soalan objektif, mulakan dengan bahagiannya terlebih dahulu kerana kebiasaannya akan lebih cepat dijawab. Bagi soalan subjektif, buat banyak latihan esei atau huraian untuk membina daya huraian yang baik dan lengkap. Gunakan dalil ringkas sahaja andai diperlukan. Pastikan kehendak soalan, jika soalan berkehendakkan 'huraikan' maka jangan jawab secara ringkas tetapi jika soalan berbentuk 'nyatakan' maka jawapannya hanya perlu inti sahaja.

4. Latihan Soalan Percubaan / Soalan Ramalan

Selalu amalkan menjawab soalan-soalan ramalan dan percubaan yang disediakan oleh Ustaz Azhari. Gunakan skema jawapan untuk semak sendiri dan perbetulkan kesilapan.

5. Hafazan dan Amali

Hafalkan doa, surah dan dalil ringkas secara konsisten. Buat latihan bacaan tilawah dan amali solat banyak kali supaya lancar dan lebih yakin.

6. Mental dan Motivasi

Tetapkan sasaran Mumtaz supaya diri ada motivasi yang jelas. Banyakkan berdoa dan pertolongan dari Allah semoga lebih memahami ilmu yang dipelajari dan diberikan kekuatan. Rehat dan tidur yang cukup supaya otak sentiasa segar dan cerdas semasa ulangkaji dan juga semasa peperiksaan.

7. Gunakan Sumber dan Bahan Rujukan Berkualiti

Gunakan nota padu yang dikarang oleh Ustaz Azhari. Rujuk soalan tahun-tahun lepas untuk kenalpasti jenis soalan yang selalu keluar.

8. Bengkel atau Kelas Tambahan

Sertai Bengkel Teknik Skor Mumtaz yang dianjurkan bersama Ustaz Azhari supaya dapat petunjuk langsung, fokus pada topik penting dan soalan popular. Menghadiri kelas bersemuka ataupun atas talian akan dapat membantu pelajar kerana dapat bertanya secara terus kepada guru sekiranya ada kekeliruan atau ketidakfahaman pelajar tentang sesuatu topik atau perkara.

9. Pengurusan Masa Semasa Peperiksaan

Bagi setiap bahagian soalan, tetapkan berapa banyak masa yang diperlukan. Sebagai contoh, 20 minit untuk soalan objektif dan 60 minit untuk soalan subjektif. Tinggalkan masa untuk semak jawapan, perbetulkan kesalahan ejaan, fakta dan struktur.

Malaysian women entrepreneurs are making steady strides in cross-border trade, supported by increased access to digital platforms and stronger collaboration across the export ecosystem. This was among the key messages from the Women in Export (WiEX) Forum 2025, organised by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), where Shopee Malaysia joined a panel on expanding global access through e-commerce.

Held at Menara MATRADE, the forum convened senior policymakers, industry leaders, and ecosystem partners, to explore actionable strategies to help more women-led businesses reach international markets.

Speaking at the session “Mengakses Pasaran Global melalui Platform Digital”, Shopee Malaysia’s Head of Business Development, Saovanee Chan-Somchit shared how local women entrepreneurs are leveraging e-commerce to scale regionally. She also highlighted the critical role digital platforms play in providing structured, accessible support at every stage of their growth.

“At Shopee, we work with hundreds of thousands of MSMEs in Malaysia, and about one-third are women-led,” said Saovanee. “We’ve seen first-hand how women entrepreneurs bring incredible determination to overcome constraints, whether it’s limited access to digital training, managing caregiving responsibilities, or navigating new market risks. Our role is to support them with the right tools, infrastructure, and guidance to scale on their terms.”

Shopee’s export enablement strategy is designed to meet Malaysian sellers where they are, offering structured yet flexible support tailored to different levels of readiness. The Shopee International Platform (SIP) provides an end-to-end managed solution that helps Malaysian sellers reach overseas buyers while Shopee handles cross-border logistics, customer service, and payment processing. By removing operational complexities, SIP allows sellers to focus their time and energy on growing their business, from improving product quality to expanding their assortment and optimising marketing. Through SIP, over 30,000 Malaysian sellers are now active in international markets, particularly in Singapore, the Philippines, and Thailand, with more than 20,000 daily export orders fulfilled across these countries. Shopee aims to further expand its export network across Southeast Asia, opening up even more opportunities for Malaysian MSMEs.

Meanwhile, the Malaysia-Singapore (MY-SG) Direct programme offers the opportunity for sellers to operate and grow their business independently on Shopee Singapore. Sellers benefit from full flexibility in managing their storefront, pricing, product listings, and promotions, while still enjoying integrated logistics, payment solutions, and access to curated campaigns. With over 5,000 active sellers and 10,000 daily orders, MY-SG Direct provides a scalable, high-control route for export-ready businesses seeking to build long-term brand presence abroad.

These programmes have opened new opportunities for women-led brands to scale meaningfully beyond local borders. One example is Karen Ng Pei Voon, founder of AUDIO KING which sells the locally developed MOGAD electronics brand. After joining the MY-SG Direct programme, the business saw a tenfold revenue increase within six months driven by continuous improvements in listings and participation in targeted campaigns.

Another is Joey & Mom, a baby essentials brand founded by a mother of two, Purani Selvaratnam. By using Shopee’s fulfilment and marketing tools, the brand successfully expanded to Singapore, all while operating fully out of Malaysia, demonstrating how digital commerce can complement family responsibilities and business aspirations.

Also among the many inspiring stories is that of Sheryn Chin, who began her baby food business from home.Despite initial hurdles with cross-border customs procedures and onboarding challenges on other platforms, she found a seamless path to international growth through Shopee’s MY-SG Direct programme. By leveraging Shopee’s suite of marketing tools, Sheryn actively participated in platform-led campaigns, tapped into voucher incentives to attract new customers, and enhanced her product visibility by optimising listing elements such as titles, descriptions, and visuals. These strategic efforts led to a steady increase in her export volumes, reaching hundreds of orders each month. Today, she shares her experience as a certified Shopee Xpert trainer and mentor to other women entrepreneurs navigating similar challenges.

“These stories reflect not just entrepreneurial talent, but the resilience and ingenuity of Malaysian women,” Saovanee added. “We’re encouraged by their success and committed to doing our part to ensure more women can scale with confidence.”

Looking ahead, Shopee remains committed to making e-commerce accessible for all by continuing to work with government and local agencies to accelerate digital transformation and create new online opportunities. This includes close collaboration with MATRADE to support more structured and scalable approaches to export development. “With MATRADE’s strategic guidance and Shopee’s on-the-ground experience supporting MSMEs, we see strong potential to contribute to impactful programmes that empower women entrepreneurs nationwide,” added Saovanee.

According to Shopee’s latest consumer survey*, while 42% of respondents still value discounts and low prices, a greater number - 58% - now prioritise product quality and seller credibility when deciding if something is truly worth it.

This emerging trend of smart spending signals a new chapter in e-commerce: shoppers remain price-conscious, but they’re no longer buying blindly based on discounts alone. Instead, they are leveraging Shopee’s trust-building tools such as Shopee Live and Shopee Video, affiliate content, and trusted reviews to find the right balance between affordability and quality. Smart shoppers are more intentional, using digital tools to stretch every ringgit and ensuring valuable purchase decisions.

Around 60% of Malaysians use built-in features like daily vouchers, cashback offers, Shopee Coins, and the ‘Lagi Murah’ tag to find the best deals. In fact, 79% of respondents reported stacking vouchers to maximise their savings, while 40% actively searched for the ‘Lagi Murah’ tag to ensure they’re getting the lowest possible price. But here’s what’s new: shoppers are complementing these tools with deeper research and validation features, especially Shopee Live and Shopee Video.

Nearly 83% of users now use Shopee Live to help them decide what to buy. These livestreams provide more than just entertainment - with real-time demos, authentic seller interactions, and exclusive deals - they create a sense of trust that static product listings can’t replicate. It’s not just about what is cheapest, but why it’s worth buying.

Short-form content, like Shopee Video, serve as quick, credible reviews that further build buyer confidence. Around 70% of respondents trust creator recommendations, especially when backed by strong seller ratings and verified user reviews. And when trying out new products or new sellers, nearly half of all respondents consider seller ratings and buyer reviews as their most important reference point. This shows a growing demand for social proof and transparency where product value includes social validation.

This emerging trend marks a lasting evolution in Malaysian online shopping habits. Today’s consumers aren’t just clicking on the cheapest item - they’re evaluating, comparing, and looking for proof of product quality. In response to the rise of smart shoppers, Shopee is actively expanding its affiliate ecosystem from driving more short-form content through Video Missions, nurturing high-quality creators via the Content Creator Club, and facilitating targeted affiliate matchmaking for sellers and brands. Kita kalau sehari je air paip tak keluar pun, kita dah kecoh giler kan. Bayangkan lah kalau kita takde air berminggu-minggu. Haa, tak ke parah. Nak masak pun susah, nak mandi, nak berwuduk, nak berak, alahaiiii....Korang bayangkan lah macam mana rakyat negeri Selangor yang selalu sangat menghadapi gangguan bekalan air bersih ni. Selalu sangat mereka terputus bekalan air. Ada masa hingga berminggu-minggu lamanya sehingga menjejaskan kehidupan seharian mereka.

Katanya masalah ni terjadi berpunca daripada antaranya pencemaran sumber air di sungai-sungai utama seperti Sungai Selangor dan Sungai Langat yang mana loji rawatan air terpaksa dihentikan. Loji dan sistem paip air yang lama yang telah usang dan kuantitinya tidak mencukupi juga adalah masalah utama dari sepuluh tahun dahulu sehingga sekarang tau. Pastu ada pulak kawasan yang bertekanan air rendah seperti di Sungai Merab, Desa Putra dan Kampung Dato Abu Bakar Baginda. Banjir dan kemarau yang sering berlaku kat Selangor pun menjadi salah satu punca bekalan air tidak mencukupi kerana loji tidak dapat berfungsi dan beroperasi.

Seorang pengguna Facebook, Simu Hasni, 40, berkata, hidup di Selangor 'keras' disebabkan permasalahan itu.
Ibu kepada dua anak itu turut menasihatkan mereka yang ingin berhijrah ke Selangor untuk membuat persiapan berdepan masalah berulang itu."Yang berhasrat mahu duduk di Selangor, siap sedia di rumah di wilayah berbeza. Hidup di Selangor keras dik," kongsinya. Berkongsi lanjut, dia yang tinggal di kawasan Seksyen 7, Shah Alam terpaksa pulang ke sebuah lagi rumahnya di Sepang disebabkan gangguan air. "Pulang kerja sekitar jam 5 petang (Selasa), tengok rumah tak ada air. Mungkin ambil masa satu ke dua hari untuk pulih. "Jadi lepas anak-anak pulang dari sekolah, kami ambil keputusan pulang ke Sepang untuk beberapa hari. "Disebabkan gangguan bekalan air ini, anak terpaksa ponteng sekolah, mungkin pulang semula ke Shah Alam pada Khamis jika bekalan air kembali pulih," katanya.

Pengguna Facebook, Zam Rimau turut meluahkan rasa tidak puas hati susulan kekerapan gangguan air itu.
"Selalu sangat air tak ada...Apa lah Selangor ni asyik mengata Kelantan tak ada air rupanya tempat (Selangor) aku kerap tak ada air," luahnya.
Seorang lagi pengguna akaun Facebook, Opahputeri Megat berkata,
"Gangguan air semakin kerap dirasakan kebelakangan ini."

PA tersentuh hati pabila terbaca artikel yang ditulis di Sinar Harian pada 24/7/2024 tentang kesengsaraan rakyat Selangor yang sering saja menghadapi gangguan bekalan air secara berulang-ulang. Berat mata memandang berat lagi bahu yang memikulnya. Sampai bila kah kesengsaraan mereka ini akan berakhir agaknya ya. Apakah tiada solusi yang boleh diambil bagi membantu pemasalahan mereka ini.

Bak kata pepatah sudah jatuh ditimpa tangga. Masalah gangguan bekalan air belum pun berakhir, rakyat Selangor kini diuji pula dengan kadar kenaikan tarif air sebanyak 30% pada tahun 2025. Kenaikan ini merupakan kenaikan kali kedua berturut-turut selepas pelarasan pada 1 Februari 2024. Kenaikan tarif ini sudah semestinya akan memberikan kesan yang sangat mendalam kepada rakyat Selangor dengan peningkatan bil bulanan seterusnya meningkatkan bebanan kewangan terutama kepada golongan berpendapatan rendah dan sederhana. Sebagai contoh, bagi isirumah yang menggunakan 50 meter padu air sebulan, bil bulanan dijangka akan meningkat daripada RM 68.25 kepada RM 87.63.

Jadi, apakah langkah-langkah yang akan diambil oleh Kerajaan Negeri Selangor dan Air Selangor dalam menangani isu dan pemasalahan yang dihadapi oleh mereka ini. Jika permasalah air ini tidak dapat diatasi sudah pastinya akan menjejaskan tahap ekonomi rakyat khususnya dan negeri Selangor amnya.
