Three hours of free time have just “fallen” into your lap. What would you do?

This happened to me last Friday and my first thought was, “A movie is an option, but there’s nothing I really want to see.” After sitting, journaling and reflecting for a bit on what I truly need, it came to me. A walk around the lake (I love turtle watching) and a peach/mango smoothie from my local natural foods deli. Ahhhh, YES!

While there’s nothing wrong with going shopping or catching a flick, I challenge you to think about what would really nourish—and sustain you—when you get precious time alone (think: a handful of potato chips vs. black beans and rice).

Most of us are moving so fast, we’re disconnected from our true needs and desires. In fact, mental health professionals believe this “disconnect from self” is the root cause of depression and anxiety for women. While solo dates may feel weird if they’re new, they’re ideal opportunities to slow down, prioritize your self-care and reconnect with your inner world (check out these three self-care practices for support).

The next time you find an expanse of unscheduled alone time, consider the following soul-nurturing ideas. Here are my five favorite self-care solo dates:

BEAUTY DATE: Pack a delicious picnic and visit your local botanical, wildflower or sculpture gardens. Enjoy a leisurely lunch on a blanket while soaking in the sun and fragrance from the flowers.

MOVEMENT DATE: Try a new dance or yoga class and enjoy working up a sweat; then treat yourself to an exotic fruit smoothie or an iced hibiscus rose tea. (Live in NC? Join me for Wild Souls Authentic Movement on Sundays.)

NATURE DATE: Enjoy a dip (or a cold plunge) at a nearby spring-fed pool, river or lake, then relax on a blanket for some lazy cloud gazing. Pick up some macadamia nuts and dried apricots beforehand for a snack.

CULTURE DATE: Explore your local museum or an interesting gallery exhibit, then discover a new ethnic restaurant.

JOURNALING DATE: Browse your local independent bookstore, pick out a beautiful, inspiring journal and head to a new coffee shop to reflect/write on what you’re grateful for or have recently learned about yourself.

This week, when contemplating what you’d most like to do, I challenge you to do it differently. Consider what would feel absolutely nurturing and delightful. And, when in doubt, do less.

You can find more of my favorite solo dates, exercises for reconnecting with who you are and suggested mini-retreats in my award-winning self-care primer (order a hard copy or download the ebook from my site), The Mother’s Guide to Self-Renewal: How to Reclaim, Rejuvenate and Re-Balance Your Life. And check out my TV interview for additional ideas on solo dates. Drop me a line, I’d love to hear how your solo date unfolds.

Warmly,

I was visiting with a good friend last week who was feeling exhausted, frustrated and saddened that her recent family vacation was not what she had intended or needed. “We crammed too much in, checked our work email too often and didn’t build in enough downtime. I don’t feel like we really got to connect as a family or take full advantage of our magical surroundings,” she shared.

Are you planning a summer vacation and feeling stressed about where you’ll go, what you’ll do, and whether you can afford to take time off from work and caregiving responsibilities?

Whether you’re going camping at a local park or heading to the ocean or the mountains, here are some tips for creating a less stressful, more mindful vacation that leaves you feeling renewed and recharged:

Prepare! Get things handled (and delegate work) in advance so you can leave it at home/the office and be present with your loved ones. This is the time to ask for help!

When planning your trip, ask, “What do we really need to recharge?” Maybe it’s camping at Yellowstone National Park, an unplugged staycation or visiting old friends and renting a lake house together. Plan a trip that will help you replenish and unwind so you return home rested.

Unplug—as much as possible. Set guidelines for your family and yourself on how, when or if you’ll use technology while you’re away. People first, things second.

Do less to experience more and keep it simple; the fewer decisions we have to make on vacation, the happier we are. Create space to digest what you’re experiencing. Don’t complicate things, create busy itineraries or over-schedule yourself or your family (kids especially hate to be rushed).

Spend time in nature—the ultimate antidepressant—enjoying family hikes, lounging on the grass, picnics next to the lake, exploring new trails or soaking up the sun.

Schedule unscheduled time—seriously—you and your kids need time to daydream in hammocks, stroll around your surroundings and just let things happen spontaneously.

Rest—give your entire family permission to be lazy and lie around (this may mean staying in pajamas until 3 p.m. and eating scrambled eggs and fruit for dinner).

If you’re a parent (or grandparent), it can also be helpful to visit with families who have kids of similar ages prior to planning your family vacation. Ask them to share what their favorite, most enjoyable, relaxing vacation spots have been. What worked and what didn’t work for them on their trips? And, don’t be afraid to do less and take the road less traveled.

How many times have you heard friends share that their all-time favorite vacation activity was not visiting the Eiffel tower, but lazily sipping coffee and people watching while sitting at small, quaint sidewalk cafes? Remember this as you consider what will truly nourish you on your next getaway.

Warmly,

FOUR UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES FOR SELF-CARE & CONNECTION:

I sat next to a college student on the plane recently after coming back from leading a retreat in MA. I listened as she talked about her fears and anxieties around her career path and “What’s next?” When I got up to leave, I asked her, “Cristina, what is the most challenging part of all this?” She replied, “That I don’t feel validated or seen. Every time I bring up my worries, adults start talking about how much harder things were when they were 23. It makes me feel even worse. I wish they would just listen and really hear me.” Exactly.

This week I’m focusing on emotional self-care and offering up a helpful reminder: we have to feel it, to heal it.

Mindfulness teachers and scientists say that when we take the time to truly feel our uncomfortable feelings, on average, they only last for about 90 seconds. But so often rather than staying with the temporary discomfort they bring up, we numb out, sweep them under the rug or go into hyper-busy mode. Our emotions (energy in motion) are our teachers; they’re trying to help us transform, grow and release what we no longer need.

We are not self-improvement projects; when we remember to meet ourselves where we are and honor our journey, it helps us invite in more self-acceptance and self-compassion.

Ready to feel to heal? Here are three suggestions to support your emotional well-being:

Carefully choose friends/mentors who have the emotional and spiritual maturity to hold the space for what you are sharing; they should allow you to show up “warts and all” while also seeing the highest and best in you. Discern: do you need the support of a good friend or mentor, a minister, a coach or a licensed therapist? Be choosy and take time to get clear on your needs.

Remember one of my favorite mantras: many things are true at once. When looking at big life stuff, it’s easy to get in an all-or-nothing mindset. This rarely serves us; cultivate the ability to see more than one perspective (read how to become comfortable with polarities).

Journaling can become a great tool for self-awareness and insight. Even just taking a few minutes each morning to reflect and write your answers to: How do I feel? What do I need? What do I want? Writing is invaluable to helping me access the 30,000-foot view of my life.

Your life path and journey are sacred. Our greatest growth comes from staying awake, alert and present to what is unfolding moment to moment while inviting in self-compassion. I see you, I hear you, I honor your experience. As the song goes that I often lead in our community song circles, “Every emotion has a right to life.”

Warmly,

“Green was the silence, wet was the light, the month of June trembled like a butterfly.” -Pablo Neruda

Recently after my forest-based morning workout, my friend Laura asked me to join her and her kids to pick strawberries. Thinking of the mountains of emails and work contracts that awaited me and before, “No, I have to get to my office,” could come out of my mouth, I paused. I’m really intent on embracing a magical, slower, more sensual summer and what better way to do this than to stroll through fragrant, bountiful strawberry bushes picking and snacking on one of the season’s most delicious gifts? The answer was, “Yes!” For me, this choice represented the summer my soul desires. What’s your intention for summer 2026?

Perhaps you’re overextended and craving unscheduled time to do nothing? Or, are you being called to learn a new skill? Or if you’re exhausted, you may need to pull out your calendar and block out periods for deep rest and relaxation in nature? We’re living in a time of the unknown and navigating constant chaos and uncertainty. But, that doesn’t mean our self-care has to get shelved. Pause for a moment and think about how you want to experience this summer.

If you’ve ever woken up on Labor Day and realized your summer went way too fast and was not truly replenishing, you know how key it is to enter this magical time with purpose and intention.

One of the most popular tools from my life balance book, The Mother’s Guide to Self-Renewal: How to Reclaim, Rejuvenate and Re-Balance Your Life, is the “Nine Ways to Say No” list from my chapter on Managing Your Energy. We have a finite amount of energy. And our energy—our life force—is precious. In addition to often over-committing, most of us waste a lot of energy through overwork, endless hours on screens or engaging in activities that don’t truly feed us.

When we say “no” to the “shoulds” and those things that are non-essential—we can say “yes” to what matters most. Learning to say “no” is like weight lifting—the more you practice saying it, the stronger you become. Here’s support and my nine creative ways to say “no”!

This summer, my theme is reflection and I plan to go offline for chunks of time so I can deep dive into writing, reading, crafting songs and poetry, swimming, growing herbs and vegetables, cooking peach desserts galore and taking long meandering walks by the lake.

As you look at your summer months and consider a new work, family, volunteer project or commitment, before you commit, check in and ask, “What is my heart’s greatest desire this summer … and what do I most need?” Taped to my laptop is my favorite quote from German poet Goethe: “Things which matter most should never be at the mercy of things which matter least.”

Warmly ~

Once when I was at the wellness mecca Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health leading a women’s retreat (join me here Oct. 16-18), I met an executive who was the dean of a large medical school. She said they had just added a class on life balance and resiliency to their medical school curriculum. But, she wonders if her young doctors in training will see the value of this course for their patients—and themselves—as they navigate their intense pace and succumb to the seduction of productivity.

Sustainability is often defined as the capacity to endure, the long-term maintenance of responsibility and, I would add, the long-term maintenance of self.

Most of us are living at a pace that is unsustainable—what I would call an inhumane pace. We throw our energy around like handfuls of rice grains at newlyweds. We’re overextended, over-scheduled, racing through our to-do lists and we rarely pause before we say “Yes,” to requests.

Our energy is precious. It’s the currency that allows us to do things in the world. And it’s finite. But we rarely honor it or see it as sacred (which it is!).

As you consider your next request, project or invitation ask yourself:

Will this activity or relationship feed me or drain me?

Is my intuition saying “Yes” to this request, or “No”? (Pay attention to the sensation in your gut—the body never lies.)

Does being around this person, group or organization make me feel positive, negative or neutral?

In this situation, what is uniquely mine to do? And know that very often, the answer is, “Nothing.”

During my twenties and thirties—perhaps like the medical students—I ran myself hard. I would push and push and then live for the weekends where I’d crawl to a yoga class, live for happy hour with friends or take in a massage– finally allowing myself to slow down and add a few cups of water to my dry-as-a-bone well.

But the chronic stress began to take a toll and in my late thirties, I became clear that I didn’t want to just “survive”– I wanted to thrive. I wanted to find a sustainable way of living that supported me in maintaining an unwavering allegiance to myself, making choices that left me feeling alive, whole and resilient, and generating and building energy reserves for yet-to-be-manifested dreams and desires.

While leading a support call for leaders recently on managing your energy, not just your time, I shared that even when I’m working on something big that is energy intensive—like launching a book or changing a learned behavior—I want to land on the other side of the experience feeling replenished and nourished. I want to feel like I have not abandoned myself and I have paused frequently to remind myself that, “Just because I can, doesn’t mean I should.”

Warmly,

I’m in a very intense life stretch: moving, building a house, changes to my business, family health crises and more. It’s been hard.

Yesterday morning, I looked around my current home (it’s a mess!), my office (even worse!) and my planner/task list for delayed work projects (whew!). I could feel overwhelm lapping at my feet.

I know when this feeling comes to visit–signified by a tightening in my chest, a discomfort in my belly–it’s time to pause and step away to get clear on what matters most. And, to ask, “What is uniquely mine to do and what most needs my attention right now?”

Since I started my first coaching business, Career Strategists, in 1999, I have been taking personal retreats each quarter to help me get focused on the best use of my time, energy and talents. I find these especially critical when my plate is really full. I live by the reminder that “Life is not a thing to be managed, but a mystery to be lived,” and in order to live into the mystery, I have to pause frequently to reassess how I’m using my energy.

Intrigued? This week, I invite you to consider getting a personal planning retreat on your calendar (it’s free and your retreat can be as short as four hours or as long as an entire weekend). Here are my tips for taking a personal retreat. And if you’d like personal mentoring from me around, “What is yours to do?” consider joining me and amazing soulful women October 16-18th for Awaken Your Wild Soul: Reclaim Your Purpose, Power & Inner Wisdom ~ A Women’s Self-Renewal Retreat at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. Details here.

Let me know how it goes and what you uncover this week. These planned breaks are great for getting the “30,000-foot view” of your life and are a wonderful, nurturing way for you to invest in yourself. “From stillness comes discernment.”

Warmly ~

This past weekend I was visiting with some friends who have been going through recent loss and trauma. My friend Elena turned to me and asked, “Renee, what do you do when you feel shaken to your core?” I thought for a moment about all the hard times I’ve navigated since my 20’s and answered, “I do yoga.” I have found conscious movement and breathing–experienced through mindfulness practices like yoga, qigong and authentic dance–have had a profound effect on my emotional well-being and have helped me to feel in order to heal … more than anything else.

My physician and nurse parents were yogis and introduced my siblings and I to this health practice at a very early age. For years in my mid-late 20s I did yoga once a week at a studio, enjoying the health and stress management benefits. But as I got older, I began to embrace the more subtle gifts that come from this ancient practice which has now become mainstream (34%–about 80 million–of Americans say they are somewhat or very likely to practice yoga in the next 12 months).

Why would a busy entrepreneur with a global business carve out time each day for downward dogs? At age 60, I have experienced tremendous benefits from yoga–which means to yoke or unite–but what keeps me coming back to the mat time and time again is because this practice:

• helps me feel more spacious on the inside. Saturday a.m. I got into an argument with my husband, but after my hatha class and an hour of deep belly breathing, I returned to my family more centered, relaxed and the “triggered feeling” was gone. Yoga allows me to more easily be with what is.

• reminds me that my problems aren’t mountains, they’re molehills. After practicing, I reclaim a 30,000 foot perspective which supports me in being more aware, compassionate and clear.

• uncorks my well of creativity and helps me remember who I am. This blog post pretty much wrote itself in the last moments of my yoga practice. Many of my best ideas-and all my books-have come to me effortlessly while I’m holding pigeon or in triangle pose.

I could go on and on about the gifts that I have received from a regular yoga practice—a happier disposition, a kinder relationship with my sweet body, an openness to inquiry and an abiding curiosity—but more than anything, when I do yoga I remember who I really am and that everything is perfect just as it is.

I challenge you to try a class or do more yoga (ideally at a yoga studio as opposed to the gym-they’re different, I promise). If you already like yoga, increase your frequency, create a home practice or try another form and do it differently (I love it all: Kundalini, Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin or Restorative and iRest, one of my favorites and the practice I’m trained in). Here’s an explanation of the different types of yoga; also Yoga With Adriene has some really good free 20-minute yoga videos sorted by theme. Totally new to yoga? Here’s a great overview for beginners. Namaste to all.

Warmly ~

One Sunday morning, I was lying in bed reading from author Anne Lamott’s beautiful little book Small Victories. In one of her stories about parenting, she shares with a little self-deprecation, but mostly tenderness, how she doesn’t bake for PTA fundraisers, is often disorganized and sometimes forgets to follow through on updates from her son’s school. Her ability to accept who she is is both endearing and freeing.

Her story got me thinking about how so many people I meet have a misguided sense about the concept of self-care. I often hear a lot of “shoulds,” and many confess they downright suck at self-care.

A transformational coach/teacher, I have studied, explored, written books about and taught self-care to men and women globally for more than 25 years. I can wholeheartedly share that self-care—a practice that has changed my life more than any other—is NOT about:

-fixing yourself or turning yourself into a “makeover version” of you
-trying to become someone who “has it all together” or who’s always wise and calm
-being perfect or doing what our parents, friends or the media say we should do to be our best selves (ex: go gluten-free or do more yoga)
-striving to be more worthy through accomplishing more or adhering to society’s list of “shoulds” around parenting, relationships or (fill in the blank)
-spending a bunch of money on services or products that are supposed to make us more fit, beautiful, smart, etc.

Self-care isn’t about self-improvement. It’s not about a goal you strive for. And it’s not about becoming YOU version 2.0. It’s about meeting yourself where you are with a soft and open heart. It’s believing “your ordinary self is enough.” It’s feeling safe enough to show up in the world 100% you and inherently giving others permission to do the same.

Self-care is about attuning and responding to your needs and desires moment to moment (watch a video). It’s about being compassionate with yourself when you bump up against your faults and treating yourself with the same love and tenderness you would have for a four-year-old who’s had a really hard day. It’s not about adding something to your to-do list, cracking the whip, or finally getting in shape. The true art of self-renewal is about cultivating a kinder, gentler relationship with yourself and asking for and receiving the nurturing and nourishment you truly need– whether that’s a hug or a shoulder to cry on. It’s knowing that YOU have your own back. And that no matter what you say, do or flub– you will not abandon yourself.

TAKE ACTION: This week, notice how you treat and talk to yourself. How would you describe the relationship? Do you sound like a drill sergeant, a loving grandparent or a wise and trusted mentor? Share your observations with someone you trust. I’d love to support you in learning the art/science of self-care and cultivating a kinder/gentler relationship with yourself at an upcoming retreat or through one of my downloadable self-care retreats (audio classes you can access 24/7). Let me know how I can support you in having a kinder, gentler relationship with yourself.

In the midst of all the intensity, chaos and unrest we’re collectively swimming in right now, many people are having big ah-ha’s and flashes of clarity. Others are feeling more lost and confused than ever. And, some are curious about exploring new ways of being. During the past few weeks, I’ve received at least ten calls from friends and clients asking for referrals for great therapists.

Whenever these requests come in, I encourage my friends to slow down, step back and approach this process intentionally. Take your time to get this right; you’re going to be sharing your innermost thoughts and feelings with this person.

I’m a big fan of psychotherapy as one of many healing modalities. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the great Health Realization, Imago, Somatic Experiencing, Emotionally-Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, adult attachment and Voice Dialogue therapy/coaching I have received over the last three decades. But not all psychotherapists are equal. Take the time to carefully vet and choose a therapist who can honor who you are, see your innate goodness and challenge you in a way that supports your highest growth. Above all, trust your gut!

Here are the questions I ask my friends as they begin looking at various options for supporting their mental/emotional health:

Does this person need to be on your insurance plan or can you pay out of pocket (I highly recommend you stay open here—many amazing folks are not on insurance plans)? On a tight budget? I have not tried it, but have clients who have appreciated the affordable support they have received through BetterHelp. Also, make sure to research any Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) your employer may offer; ask your company’s human resources department about this. You can also reach out to your local United Way for additional resources around free or low-cost support.

Why are you seeking a therapist and what do you hope to accomplish? Another close follow-up to this is: do I need a therapist or a coach? This is a tough one as the lines are often blurred. It’s best to ask the therapist (or coach) you’re interviewing to describe how they view the differences. For most, this will provide the clarity you need to make a decision. You can learn more about coaching through the International Coaches Federation.

Is it important for you to see someone who honors/incorporates your religious or spiritual beliefs (this is key for many)? Do you have favorite spiritual teachers who are also psychotherapists (often they can make referrals)?

Do you want to see someone who integrates somatic techniques (“body-based” practices) such as somatic experiencing, mindfulness, breathwork, body sensing, yoga/talk therapy, etc.? I love somatic-based work and believe, “the issues are in the tissues.” Therapists who utilize somatic-based practices typically have the highest rates of efficacy. Take time to examine the therapist’s background/training and areas of specialty and check out the highly popular book, “The Body Keeps the Score” by Bessel van der Kolk.

Schedule a short call with the potential therapist before you set up an appointment. I like to ask: What is your philosophy or approach to therapy? Who, or what influences your work (other teachers, models, methods, books, etc.)? And, What do you think the purpose of therapy is? I think this is key as I believe therapy is not about “fixing” someone, but helping them come into greater awareness and ultimately, the highest expression of themselves.

When looking for referrals, ask friends you trust who have similar values for recommendations. It’s important to seek out licensed mental health professionals who have direct, specific experience in the area you want to focus on (ex: ADHD, addiction, parenting, couples counseling).

Stay open to telehealth, it can be highly effective. Don’t be afraid to schedule an initial session or two and then “sit with” the experience for a while to reflect on whether you’ve found a fit (trust your intuition—how did you feel when you left the appointment?). Be direct and share what works and doesn’t work for you with your therapist. Ask them for their vision or plan for working together (duration, expectations, goals, etc.). Lastly, be gentle with yourself and give yourself kudos for taking this courageous step. It’s easier to keep doing what you’re doing rather than exploring all parts of yourself (read my post on dancing with your shadow).

I feel honored that so many physicians, coaches and mental health professionals come to my retreats and are part of our community. There are many amazing counselors out there doing powerful work. Getting support can be one of the most transformative experiences of your life. Dedicating time, energy and resources to your mental/emotional/spiritual health should be as important as taking in clean air and water.

If our outer world is a reflection of our inner world, doesn’t it make sense to take time to invest in emotional self-care?

Warmly,

“Radical Acceptance is the willingness to experience ourselves and our lives as it is.” ― Tara Brach, author/meditation teacher

I am in a season of life that is incredibly stressful. There’s no other way to put it. Between personal, family and work crises, this year has been very challenging. I’m also supporting dear friends/clients who are also in the thick of it. And, of course, collectively we’re all swimming in a sea of chaos and uncertainty.

Lately, I have felt exhausted and unsettled and often it can be a major feat to stay grounded. But this morning, rather than slide into my old pattern of succumbing to the seduction of productivity, I’m stopping in my tracks to embrace renowned meditation teacher Sylvia Boorstein’s advice: “Don’t just do something, sit there.”

Besides joyful movement and hikes in nature, the daily ritual that most helps me quiet my mind, release stress and lessen my need to control my circumstances is a 20-minute morning meditation.

For years, I fought the idea of a morning ritual, of creating dedicated time every day to steep in stillness before entering the world. I had read the brain research on the benefits of meditation, but I rationalized: “It’s too hard when you’re a parent.” “I’m too busy.” “I’ll do it later in the day.” “I would, but my partner won’t join me.” “I don’t have the right space.” “I need a new meditation cushion.” And so on. I worked hard to justify my reluctance, always wondering, “Does it really make a difference?” Today, it seems crazy that I needlessly postponed what I now consider the single most important part of my day.

Brain researchers share that devoting as little as five minutes every morning to your inner world can set a positive course for your entire day.

This wisdom really spoke to me. Taking five minutes each morning to pause in stillness and set an intention for my day? I could do that. Here are five tips that may help you jump-start a meditation practice:

Schedule meditation for the same time each day. It works best to meditate early in the morning when our minds are most quiet and clear. If you’re not an early-morning person, do it at lunch, take a mid-morning nature break or wait until after the kids have gone to bed at night. Evening meditations can be beautiful and relaxing.

Identify where you’ll pause for your practice. Find or create a space in your home that elicits safety, peace, healing and self-nurturance. Know that you can go there at any time and use this as a regular meditation place. Maybe it’s a special reading chair, your bedroom closet or under your favorite tree. Or if having a spot at home isn’t feasible, identify a quiet parking lot or a nearby green space next to your office where you can park and be alone. Get creative!

Tap a source of comfort and inspiration. To focus the intention and set the tone for the day, many like to read and meditate on an inspirational text or phrase before or at the end of their meditation. Some utilize a spiritual teaching or text, a favorite book or poem or an inspiring daily online message.

Remember to breathe. Sometimes when we meditate, our agitation and anxieties fill our heads with thoughts and to-do lists. When this happens, don’t forget to breathe! Breathing detoxifies, energizes, changes our mood and biochemistry, wakes up the brain and helps us feel more present and calm. One calming technique I love is to breathe in very slowly for a count of six and exhale for eight—all through the nose with the mouth closed. Repeat for at least ten times. Close your eyes to help focus your awareness inward. Some people like to choose a word to help them stay focused on their breathing.

Ritualize your morning meditation time. Establish a simple ritual or routine for your morning meditation, which provides a rhythm and structure. For example, you might first light a candle, close your eyes, and rest in stillness. If you like, you could then read a short inspirational text, and close by reflecting on what you’re grateful for or setting an intention for the day. You might ask a higher power for guidance on an issue. Choose a rhythm and flow that works for you. You can find more tips and guidance on daily meditation practices in my life balance book Nurturing the Soul of Your Family: 10 Ways to Find Peace & Harmony in Everyday Life.

Above all, release “should’s” or “have to’s.” There is no right or wrong way to do this. Keep it simple, maintain a sense of humor and—above all—make it personally meaningful.

Bhavani, a wonderful meditation teacher I love at Kripalu where I teach, says, “How do you know when you’ve had a successful meditation? It’s over.” Don’t worry about the results. Just creating the space for stillness and accepting whatever unfolds is enough. Every time you come to your cushion will be different. Allow yourself to experience what it’s like to be fully present and comfortable sitting in silence. And be gentle with yourself. If this is new, even just starting with five minutes of quiet before you begin your day is huge!

Lastly, give this time. You may not experience immediate or consistent results, but you still receive tremendous benefits from regular practice. Even on the days when my thoughts are ricocheting around like exploding popcorn, I still feel better after I meditate than I did before. A wise mentor once said to me, “Want to experience a little bit of peace? Meditate once a week. Want to experience a lot of peace? Meditate every day.” For a growing number of us, meditation is the secret weapon for maintaining our sanity!

Warmly ~

Last week I found myself sitting in my car in a downtown parking garage feeling exhausted. All day I had been juggling traffic, conference calls, schedule changes and work requests from my team. Now, I couldn’t find a parking spot, I was late for a meeting and my phone messages were blowing up. I could feel my blood pressure rise, my body was tense and I was short of breath. I had let the outside world dictate my inner world and state of being; my pace was inhumane.

I paused, took a deep breath, exhaled and said a short prayer of gratitude for this awareness. It was time to slow down.

The idea of how to create a more sustainable pace in a 24/7 world comes up every time I speak to men and women around the US on finding balance. Most share they know they are addicted to feeling speeded up and have fallen prey to the seduction of busyness.

Do you sometimes feel as if you’re a robot rather than a homosapien? Here are nine ways to practice mindfulness, reclaim your humanity and live from the inside out:

Slow down. We’ve normalized “busy-ness.” Our external world is speeding us up—if we let it. We’re not wired to go non-stop. Get in the practice of “pausing” throughout your day to take in your environment.

Make friends and social connections a priority (lunches, walks, coffee dates). In our house, we say, “People first, things second.” Our quality of life is dramatically enhanced by our friendships/circles.

Put technology in its place. Be careful of what you “normalize.” Remember you’re the master (not the slave here). Observe your habits. In our house, mornings are unplugged and in the evenings, we play quiet music that supports reading and relaxation. All phones go to “bed” at 8:30 p.m. for the night in another room.

Do nothing. Ever heard the advice, “Don’t just do something, sit there.” Stillness nourishes us to our core. Look out the window. Lie in a hammock. Sit on your front porch or a park bench. Stare into space.

Seek out quiet, dark places. No, not your closet, I’m talking about natural areas in your state or the US where there is limited or no access to technology (like Big Bend National Park); leave your phone at home. Our bodies need these experiences to re-calibrate.

Take off your shoes and walk outside. Get barefoot on the earth. Walk as much as you can (it’s so good for your body and brain!). Every day go outside and “commune with nature” for at least 10 minutes.

Give your brain a rest. Do less, think less, keep things simple. The fewer choices/decisions we have, the happier we are. “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.”

Drink lots of good clean water and eat more fruits/vegetables. How much energy-infused food do you eat daily? My mom used to advocate for eating food that is alive, as opposed to processed, “dead” food.

Give/receive eight hugs a day. Hugs, back rubs, a.m. and p.m. snuggles, embraces with family at the beginning/end of each day—all these things elicit an incredibly positive biochemical response in the body.

These are all ways of being that are innate to the human experience. They’re hard-wired into who we are. On a cellular level, we know this stuff makes us feel good and helps us remember who we really are, but somehow we’ve lost our way.

We’re living in times that require us to reflect and question everything. Ultimately, I like to ask, “How bad do you want to feel good?” Consider baby steps. Even just adopting one or two of these ideas could make a big impact on how you feel this week. Let me now how it goes!

Warmly ~

Every chance I get I affirm other women. I attend other author’s book signings, activist friend’s new program launches, I cheer on my mentees and friends when they go for a stretch role at work, create a new community initiative or nonprofit or bring a new soul into the world. As I get older, I believe there is nothing more important than affirming my sisters, especially now!

Photo: Taking a nature break to catch-up with my dear sister and friend while leading a self-renewal retreat for a nonprofit group in Texas.

Growing up, I don’t recall being around women who modeled true “sisterhood” for me. But, when I was in my late twenties, I took a leadership course with Margaret, a woman who ended up being a life-long mentor to me. She modeled some beautiful ways to “be,” in the world, but most importantly, she challenged me to stop playing small and held a huge space for me to blossom into the fullest expression of who I am. Slowly, over the years, I learned to do this. Not alone, but with many incredible women by my side.

Today, as a wife, mother, leader, business owner, mentor and community activist, moving in the world with the support of my sisters is the only way I know how to be. What does sisterhood mean to me? It’s a way of being with other women—both young and old—where I:

Hold the highest and best for them and see them as their “future selves”—especially when they’re going through a rough time.

Encourage vulnerability and authenticity in our communication; invite my sisters to “come as you are.”

Practice self-forgiveness and have the humility and courage to initiate tough, but necessary conversations; and, lovingly acknowledge what’s not being said or seen—even at the cost of having someone not like me.

Derive joy and exhilaration from sharing my sisters’ wisdom and gifts with others and delight in seeing them shine big and bright!

State my needs and ask them on a regular basis, “How can I support you?” and really mean it!

Freely share my successes and never shrink or dim my presence when I’m with others.

Enjoy reciprocity—giving and receiving—and serving my sisters in a way that “feeds me rather than drains me.”

Encourage emotional intimacy—with a chosen few—and model what it looks like to show up “warts and all.”

Honor my sisters’ innate worthiness and remind them that “their ordinary self is enough.”

One time I led a week-long self-renewal retreat for women in New York and heard—as I often do at our retreats—“I was so amazed at how comfortable I felt in this group; how quickly we dropped into authentic, heartfelt conversation; how healing it was to have dialogue with such depth; and how powerful it was to be with other women and to feel so supported.” I also heard, “I have never experienced anything like this; I didn’t even know being with other women in this way was possible!”

I took these powerful words to heart. For many, this is a new way of being with other women. It’s a courageous path that requires us to practice extreme self-care and fully show up willing to be both seen and heard. When I help my sisters shine, we all shine. Shine on sisters. Shine on.

An Exercise ~ Sisterhood: Your Journey Grab a notebook/pen, a mug of tea and reflect on the following:
-What does sisterhood mean to me? Who in my life models this for me?
-Do I have women in my life that provide a soft place to fall and allow me to show up “warts and all?”
-What would it feel like to interact with other women in a more vulnerable, authentic way?
-What do I perceive as barriers to experiencing a deeper sense of sisterhood in my own life?

Let me know how it goes. I’d love to hear from you. With kindness ~
