TalkTalk will open to the public next week and this service will be something that you will use more than you can imagine. For the first time you can not only talk to the search engine, you can discuss with it what you are looking for.

If you want to know more about the oil price, TalkTalk asks if you want to know the current oil price, the development of the oil price, or news related to the oil price. You say that you want to read news about it and TalkTalk asks you if you prefer a certain source (information that is stored for you if you want). TalkTalk then direct you to your source, or let you have the latest news related to the oil price in order from the most respected sources.

After ravaging humanity for three millennia, the virus behind smallpox is facing its comeuppance. In May, at a meeting of the World Health Organization, nations will decide if it's finally time to sterilize and incinerate into oblivion the known remaining samples of the virus.

Smallpox is sometimes described as the most devastating disease in human history, and the eradication of the disease — there has not been a naturally acquired case since 1977 — ranks as, arguably, the greatest modern public health achievement. But the path toward a destruction date has been tortuous.

The debate over whether or not to destroy the samples being preserved by the United States and Russia began in the 1980s. It has centered on whether or not we already have enough information to prevent the virus from ever wreaking havoc again.

"If it's destroyed, the statement is made that after this date, any scientists, any lab, any country that has that smallpox virus is guilty of crimes against humanity," said Dr. DA Henderson, former director of the campaign to eradicate the disease and author of the book "Smallpox: Death of a Disease" (Prometheus Books, 2009).

In a few weeks, member states of the World Health Organization will consider the destruction of the last known samples of smallpox virus, currently held in secure labs by the United States and Russia. Some have sought to publicly frame this issue as a contentious disagreement between our two countries and the rest of the world over whether the virus should be destroyed. This is misleading.

We fully agree that these samples should — and eventually will — be destroyed. However, we also recognize that the timing of this destruction will determine whether we continue to live with the risk of the disease re-emerging through deliberate misuse of the virus by others.

Those who advocate immediate destruction would have us believe that another smallpox outbreak is unthinkable. They want us to believe that there is no need to ensure the global community is adequately prepared to deal with an outbreak and that the only risk comes from maintaining the highly secured samples. For these reasons, they argue that the World Health Assembly should set an immediate date for destruction.

It should not. Although keeping the samples may carry a miniscule risk, both the United States and Russia believe the dangers of destroying them now are far greater.

Smallpox was one of the most devastating diseases humanity has ever faced, killing more than 300 million people in the 20th century alone. The victims it didn’t kill were often left scarred and blind. But thanks to the most successful global vaccination campaign in history, the disease was completely eradicated by 1980.

At that time, the WHO called on all nations to destroy their collections of smallpox virus or transfer them to the WHO-sanctioned collections at one of two labs in Russia or the United States. The global public health community assumes that all nations acted in good faith; however, no one has ever attempted to verify or validate compliance with the WHO request.

It is quite possible that undisclosed or forgotten stocks exist. Also, 30 years after the disease was eradicated, the virus’ genomic information is available online and the technology now exists for someone with the right tools and the wrong intentions to create a new smallpox virus in a laboratory. Furthermore, there are additional pox viruses that infect humans, and while they are not likely to produce the same degree of suffering that smallpox historically inflicted, they could still be dangerous.

In other words, we’ve beaten smallpox once, but we must be ready and prepared to beat it again, if necessary.

Today, most of the world’s population has no immunity to the disease. Once it was eradicated, we stopped routine civilian vaccination for smallpox. In fact, people under the age of 30 have little or no immunity to smallpox. Should an outbreak occur, we do have effective vaccines that could be deployed to protect most Americans. But global supplies are limited and some people cannot safely use the current vaccine for medical reasons.

Fortunately, in the three decades since eradication, science has come a long way. The vaccine used until the 1970s was little different from the crude vaccine developed by Edward Jenner more than 200 years ago. Today, new technologies and advances in vaccine development exist that could allow us to produce a vaccine without the rare but dangerous side effects of the original. Globally, work is under way to develop and test these vaccines. We should not stop now.

Even with an improved vaccine, vaccination alone will not save those who have already been infected once an outbreak has begun. That is why we are also working on developing, testing and licensing effective new drugs to treat smallpox for those patients with the disease. Scientists in laboratories in a number of countries are making progress on these new antiviral drugs and alternative therapeutic agents that, in the event of a new smallpox outbreak, could control the disease’s progression and greatly reduce the risk of death.

We have more work to do before these safe and highly effective vaccines and antiviral treatments are fully developed and approved for use. Once they are ready, we intend to share the fruits of this research with the world. Destroying the virus now is merely a symbolic act that would slow our progress and could even stop it completely, leaving the world vulnerable.

Destruction of the last securely stored viruses is an irrevocable action that should occur only when the global community has eliminated the threat of smallpox once and for all. To do any less keeps future generations at risk from the re-emergence of one of the deadliest diseases humanity has ever known. Until this research is complete, we cannot afford to take that risk.

Destruction of the remaining virus also would eliminate the possibility of accidental release. There is precedent for this; in 1978 an accidental release in a British lab resulted in one death.

Others, however, warn that labeling possession of the virus a crime against humanity will in no way deter terrorists, and that without the live smallpox virus, called variola, we won't be able to prepare for the worst.

"It would be very important to have something on the shelf that would help prevent or treat an epidemic, whether a virus was introduced by a terrorist or Mother Nature," said Dennis Hruby, chief scientific officer of the pharmaceutical company SIGA, which is developing a treatment for smallpox. It is possible for humans to catch other closely related pox viruses, and it's also possible that a smallpox-like virus could re-emerge from the remaining pox viruses, Hruby said. The politics

The countries that own the two remaining stockpiles appear to be digging in their heels against setting a date for destroying them.

"The United States fully agrees that these samples should eventually be destroyed. However, we believe the timing of this destruction will determine whether we eliminate the potential threat posed by the virus or continue to live with the risk of re-emergence of the disease through deliberate misuse of the virus," Bill Hall, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Global Health Affairs, wrote in an email to LiveScience. "That is why we strongly believe the WHA [World Health Assembly] should recommend continued retention of the samples until the needed research is complete."

Media reports indicate Russia's chief health official, Gennady G. Onishchenko, has taken a similar position. “It would be premature and even harmful to dispose of these collections," Onishchenko said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

The drive to destroy the samples has been led by African nations — those that would be least able to respond to an outbreak — and supported by Asian and Middle Eastern countries, according to Edward Hammond, a consultant for the Third World Network, a nongovernmental organization that advocates destruction.

"Theoretically everybody still agrees this should be done,” Hammond said. "The debate is over when it should be done. The truth is the U.S. and Russia are stalling."

World Health Organization delegates are scheduled to discuss this and other topics at the member nations’ annual assembly, May 16-24 in Switzerland.

End of a disease

Variola, which causes smallpox, belongs to a family of pox viruses that include camelpox, monkeypox, cowpox, buffalopox and others. The variola virus is faithful to its human host; other animals do not carry or spread it.

An infection causes flu-like symptoms, followed by the appearance of lesions. Roughly a third of those infected die. [How Smallpox Changed the World]

"Smallpox, it is about one of the most horrible things you can imagine," Henderson said. He saw cases for the last time in the spring of 1975 in Bangladesh. "What a horrible sight. These people looked miserable, they were sort of begging, but they couldn't drink the water if you gave it to them, and they had hideous lesions, and of course these hospitals were not screened and flies were all over… There was a distinctive odor that permeated. It's been described as the odor of rotting flesh, this horrible odor. You couldn't do anything for them, and they were reaching out for you."

In 1796, an English country doctor named Edward Jenner obtained pus from a lesion on the hand of a milkmaid infected with cowpox and used it to innoculate a young boy, protecting him from smallpox, a far more deadly disease. This was the first iteration of the smallpox vaccine. The version used to eradicate smallpox worldwide was based on a different, but closely related, pox virus called vaccinia, according to Jonathan Tucker, a biosecurity expert and author of "Scourge: The Once and Future Threat of Smallpox" (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2001).

A decade-long WHO global vaccination campaign to eradicate smallpox was successful; the last natural case occurred in October 1977, in Somalia. Destroying the virus is the natural end to the eradication campaign, according to Hammond.

"There is a moral and historical obligation to see the eradication through the end," he said.

Apple (AAPL) is Apple nowadays and has been for a long time – they lowball estimates, analysts add some sort of premium to the complete nonsense that Apple pushes out as guidance, and then Apple beats the analysts – usually by a huge margin. At which point they lowball estimates for the next quarter. Rinse, wash, repeat. Come back in 90 days for the same thing.

Apple has beaten the average estimate of its earnings per share for at least 28 consecutive quarters, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Revenue came in $1.25B+ over estimates. EPS came in at $6.40 v $5.39. Revenue up 83% year over year, which for a company of this size ($24B quarterly revenue) is astounding. Some hissy fits about the iPad sales missing expectations but I would not be too concerned. They low balled guidance big time – shocking. Any questions? hah.

The company sold 3.76 million Macs during the quarter, a 28 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. It sold 18.65 million iPhones–113 percent more than it did a year ago. But it sold just 4.69 million iPads; the Street had been looking for 6.2 million.
Gross margin was 41.4% last quarter, compared with 41.7% a year earlier

Guidance:

Earnings of $5.03 per share on revenue of $23 billion. Analysts had been expecting earnings of $5.25 per share on revenue of $23.8 billion.

In Apple talk that means they should do $6.50+ next quarter.
The stock chart is very interesting – the stock has clearly been making a series of lower highs (bearish) since mid February. And truth be told, for such stellar results, the stock is not reacting much in the after hours. But you can see it has had a huge 3 day run from $320. (huge considering the massive market cap) The stock is trading around $350 which is still not above the last high, from late March. Would definitely like to see $355 cleared for a change of pattern in the near term chart. But excluding the chart, and looking fundamentally – just a rockstar company.

Google has had several logos since its renaming from BackRub. The current official Google logo was designed by Ruth Kedar, and is a wordmark based on the Catull typeface.[1] The company also includes various modifications and/or humorous features, such as cartoon modifications of their logo for use on holidays, birthdays of famous people, and major events, such as the Olympics.[2] These special logos, some designed by Dennis Hwang, have become known as Google Doodles. WILMINGTON, Del. (CAP) - Lawyers for Microsoft, Inc. have filed a lawsuit in U.S. district court in Delaware against search giant Google, claiming the company's new Chrome OS infringes on its own Windows logo color scheme. The 48-page complaint alleges wilful intent, a charge that brings higher damages - to the tune of $54.9 million.

"Microsoft built Windows with 32 million colors, and it just so happens that Google chose the exact same four colors for its operating system logo as the Windows logo?" said Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith. "That's not coincidence; that's theft.

"And believe you me, Microsoft knows a thing or two about theft," Smith added.

Google recently created shockwaves around the Internet after announcing that the company was working on creation of a new operating system modeled after its Chrome web browser. Microsoft officials hope a successful lawsuit will send Google back to the drawing board to come up with a new logo.

"And they better not use MS Paint to make it, either, or we'll sue 'em for that, too," said an unnamed Microsoft source.

According to law experts, whether or not Microsoft can successfully sue Google for using colors that appear naturally in the environment hinges largely on the U.S. Patent Office's approval of the Redmond-based company's pending application to patent the four colors appearing together as a single entity. Pundits say history is on Microsoft's side.

"There's a reason Apple's native logo is just plain old silver," said Yale law professor Amanda Reagan. "In Microsoft v Competitor #126, the court forced Apple to load its beautifully colorful logo into Photoshop and desaturate it 80%.

"Google will be lucky if they come out of this with a black circle," Reagan noted.

For their part, Google officials seem unfazed by the prospect of a lawsuit, calling it a challenge and "something to do with that extra $30 million we made last quarter." Google CEO Eric Schmidt said he fully anticipates this will be yet another in a long line of Google successes that includes their search-based dating service, their purchase of the Earth, and the toasting capabilities of their new browser.

"As we like to say around the Google offices - Bing it on," said Schmidt.

However, Reagan warns that Microsoft's move opens the door to similar lawsuits, such as the ones filed by Jakks Pacific, makers of the Poke Ball, and Milton Bradley, creator of the '80s memory game Simon.

iDealsChina has revealed an image they claim is China's first iPhone 5 photo. Seen below, the part is wrapped in plastic and looks to have a familiar iPhone screen profile. 9to5 Mac explains the part may be a digitizer panel for the next generation Apple iPhone.

The black bezel on the part is noticeably thinner on all sides, matching previous reports from DigiTimes and others claiming that Apple is developing a 4-inch screen for the iPhone 5. A larger Retina display would compete with a variety of Android devices that already offer 4-inch screens.

Although it's difficult to judge from only one photo, if this part is real the iPhone 5 screen would cover the entire width of the device. Rumors of an iPhone nano have recently been debunked, however the screen was described as "edge-to-edge" on the smaller model. It seems Apple is planning to offer an edge-to-edge screen for a normal-sized iPhone 5.

Apple is said to be completely redesigning the iPhone 5. Besides a possible larger screen, the device will include a next generation A5 processor and is likely to include a hybrid GSM/CDMA modem. On Friday, an indictment against the founders of online poker's "big three" was unsealed by federal authorities. According to MarketWatch.com, the founders of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker were indicted on charges of bank fraud, money laundering, and illegal gambling. There were also restraining orders issued against over 75 bank accounts used by the online poker companies and their payment processors, as well as five Internet domain names.

The U.S. Department of Justice released a press release on the indictment, and in it, 11 defendants are named: Isai Scheinberg, Raymond Bitar, Scott Tom, Brent Beckley, Nelson Burtnick, Paul Tate, Ryan Lang, Bradley Franzen, Ira Rubin, Chad Elie, and John Campos. Scheinberg and Tate are identified in the indictment as representing PokerStars, Bitar and Burtnick of representing Full Tilt Poker and Tom and Beckley of representing Absolute Poker. Lang, Rubin, Franzen and Elie are identified as people who allegedly ran payment processors.

The charges are based on the Illegal Gambling Business Act of 1955 and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. These are the same charges previously brought against payment processors used by the sites that have been shut down.

The allegations center around poker companies allegedly using fraudulent methods to circumvent federal law and trick U.S. banks into processing payments after the passage of UIGEA.

In the press release, Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said, "As charged, these defendants concocted an elaborate criminal fraud scheme, alternately tricking some U.S. banks and effectively bribing others to assure the continued flow of billions in illegal gambling profits. Moreover, as we allege, in their zeal to circumvent the gambling laws, the defendants also engaged in massive money laundering and bank fraud. Foreign firms that choose to operate in the United States are not free to flout the laws they don’t like simply because they can’t bear to be parted from their profits."

FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge Janice K. Fedarcyk said, "These defendants, knowing full well that their business with U.S. customers and U.S. banks was illegal, tried to stack the deck. They lied to banks about the true nature of their business. Then, some of the defendants found banks willing to flout the law for a fee. The defendants bet the house that they could continue their scheme, and they lost."

At least $3 billion in civil money-laundering penalties from both the poker companies and defendants is being sought. According to the indictment, Campos and Elie were arrested Friday morning in Utah and Las Vegas, Nevada, respectively. Franzen is expected to appear in court for his arraignment on April 19, 2011. Those who are not in the U.S. -- Scheinberg, Bitar, Burtnick, Tate, Tom, Beckley, Rubin, and Lang -- have not been arrested, but the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of New York is working with foreign law enforcement agencies and Interpol to arrest the defendants.

11:55 a.m. PDT: PokerNews has attempted to contact all three online poker sites, and thus far, only UB/AP has replied and has no comment at this time.

12:26 p.m. PDT: PokerStars has blocked U.S. players from real money games.

1:00 p.m. PDT: If there is any bright side to this black Friday, it could be that this DOJ affront makes it clear to Congressional leaders like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that federal legislation to officially legalize online poker must move quickly.

“At Safe and Secure Initiative, we've always fought to give every American the right to gamble online,” said Michael Waxman, executive director of the industry trade association Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative. “Since the government is seeking to crack down on the freedom of the internet, we need Congress to act more than ever now to legalize and regulate the activity. This is a major development that will bring more attention to this issue. I hope it encourages Congress to move more quickly, especially as concerned Americans look for answers and a solution.”

It could also spark online poker players, with their livelihood attacked, to band together more than ever before and make their voices heard.

“Clearly there are millions of Americans who enjoy gambling online,” Waxman said. “If the opportunity to engage in the activity is taken away, they should focus their attention on encouraging their elected representatives to act on this issue and regulate online gambling.”

2:00 p.m. PDT: The Courier-Mail newspaper in Australia is reporting that it is believed that Daniel Tzvetkoff is assisting federal lawyers in the Southern District of New York, the branch of the DOJ behind today's affront. Tzvetkoff was arrested April 16 of last year in Las Vegas and charged with the same counts the site owners are being charged with today for allegedly processing $523 million in Internet gambling earnings through his payment processing company Intabill. Though he was originally denied bail as a flight risk, the Courier-Mail reports he was released on bail in August after cooperating with federal authorities, and is living in a secret location in New York City. The arrests today of the people who allegedly ran payment processors could be a move to get more people knowledgeable of the business transactions of the Internet poker sites to co-operate against the sites.

2:40 p.m. PDT: The 11 defendants listed above are each being charged with four counts -- violation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, operation of an illegal gambling business, conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy. These charges can carry hefty penalties. The maximum penalty for violation of the UIGEA and operating a gambling business is 5 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss for each charge, for conspiracy to commit wire fraud is 30 years in prison and a fine of $1 million or twice the gross gain or loss, and for money laundering conspiracy is 20 years in prison and a fine of $500,000 or twice the amount laundered.

Beach The Red Sea is considered one of the best places in the world to go diving due to it's tremendous coral reefs, warm waters and being a reasonably cheap destination. The advice I received was to go to Sharm El Sheik which is at the bottom of the Sinai Peninsula due to it being less commercially developed. In particular Naama Bay is a popular destination which is where my travel package happened to be headed to.

Diving is Big Business There are 45 diving centres in Sharm El Sheik, the majority associated with particular hotels but some large independents such as the Red Sea Diving College which is who I booked with. Full training for PADI Open Water Certification takes 5 days and costs £180, allowing you to dive pretty much anywhere in the world to a depth of 18m. In case you are wondering what PADI stands for, as explained by our instructor it is "Put Another Dollar In" (or "Put All Dollars In") as they offer a huge range of courses and specialties all of which are designed to impart vast amounts of cash from the wallet. For instance once you have done the standard Open Water course, you can then do the Advanced Open Water course, followed by Deep Diving, Underwater Photography, Rescue Diving, Drift Diving, Dry Suit Diving, Instructing... you get the idea.

In December I received an email from Fastrack team, asking me if I would like to review a goggle from Fastrack’s biker collection. After seeing the collection online, I gave my nod to them and asked for a night vision series goggle, since I felt it would come in handy during the night rides which I almost always end up doing during the course of my trips.

Couple of weeks went by and I finally received a package from them, when I opened it up, I found Fastrack MA016BK1 model UV sunglass. Not exactly what I ordered, but the design looks really cool and I would likely end up using it more than the nightvison goggles, which I can only use at night.

MA016BK1 comes in a hard case, which is a boon for tourers since we can simply stuff the sunglass in the hard case and throw it in the overstuffed tank bag, without the fear of breaking/bending it.

Priced at Rs. 1,795, one would expect MA016BK1 to be of good build quality and provide good and clear vision, which is true and I am already hooked. They are dark enough to block off harsh sunlight, but not dark enough to obscure your vision during overcast conditions or in case you suddenly go into shadow area, which happens ever so often while touring in hills.

While I haven’t personally crash tested this particular pair, Rearset has and I will take his word for it and believe they will last minor falls without any major damage.

Aeon Our future Phone

The Aeon concept shown by Nokia has the keypad making way for a touchscreen and is extremely thin. Though it looks super delicate, it is believed that the Nokia Aeon will have all that needs to beat the Apple iPhone in a tough market, worldwide. The Finnish phone behemoth has reiterated that the Aeon is still in the design as R&D progresses fast.

If Nokia really manages to come out with a phone that resembles the design of the Aeon, it has the potential to really become the aspirational phone, instead of the iPhone. Apple is not a major power in the cell phone market outside US despite the iPhone being available in many countries now. On the other hand, Nokia is. All they need is a brilliant product, and the Nokia Aeon looks like it can do that. As you can see from the photos on this page, it is easy to fall in love with.

Nokia has already released images of the Aeon concept and the pictures say that the device would sport two touch-sensitive panels mounted on a fuel-cell power pack. (Fuel cell – ignore that. In your dreams!) The touch-screen displays control all the keys that are virtual. The Aeon continues with Nokia’s recent ventures that all of which follow the wearable technology vision. Going by the images of the Nokia Aeon concept, it may be believed that the phone could be worn as a badge or as part of the wrist-strap.

Technology experts have started hailing the innovation going on at the Finnish phone maker’s R&D division, terming it as a big step in a world where Apple’s iPhone holds sway. They have opined that “it is nice that at least one manufacturer is apparently keeping up with Apple” and that “the whole world would be glad to see a realistic alternative the iPhone”.

Though the phone maker has not let out a date for the official launch of the Nokia Aeon, it is expected that when it actually does with all the spruce ups, it would be an event that would have the potential to give Apple’s iPhone a run for its money.

1. Don’t Feel Shy – If you are seriously willing to monetize your website with AdSense, make sure that you place advertisements in prominent locations where visitors will notice the ads.
2. The best performing ad units for AdSense are 160×600, 336×280 and 300×250. For text only ads, you should go with the 336×380 format but in all other situations, 300×250 may be a better format since it is most popular among advertisers and also supports rich media. 160×600 can easily fit in the sidebar of your blog.
3. Web visitors have a very short attention span and majority of them may simply leave after a quick glance. Their eyes follow a F pattern so you can get good results if the Google ads are placed in the areas colored red on the heat map. Sidebars and leaderboards at the top are often ignored.
4. Depending upon the layout of your website, you should consider placing the first unit somewhere in the middle of the page and above the fold.
5. Even kids would know that AdSense works best if there are no borders and that the background color of the ads matches with the background of the page. That may not always be true and sometimes colored backgrounds (like light yellow or very light grey) can convert better – look at the top AdWords unit on the Google search page.
6. If you have a website with a dark theme (like a black background), experiment using a contrast color scheme for Google ads.

Nevada Stuns Number 3 Boise State 34-31 In Overtime

Nevada Football lovers had a great day as they crushed the Boise State Football team’s hopes of going to a BCS Championship. Boise State went into the half with a 24 to 7 lead and it looked like this year’s miracle team was still going to the BCS. Nevada Football had a little left to say on the subject as they came back in the second half. Nevada dominated Boise State at every turn and ended up with a tie score forcing overtime. Boise State suffered as their usually great kicker faltered by missing in regulation with less than a second to go and in overtime play giving Nevada a second life. Nevada seized the opportunity and kicked a field goal in overtime to win the game 34 to 31. Nevada will relish this moment for a long time as they are not in the hunt for the BCS. Now little Boise State can kiss hopes of a BCS title away as they are not in one of the automatic qualifying conferences. (Read they are not one of the special schools that get an advantage in the BCS title hunt) This will be a point of contention again this year as the way the BCS works certain conferences get preference over others to play in the championship. Boise State Football have a great season going and should not quit now. They can still finish with only 1 loss this year and that is a respectable feat for any team.

Two missed kicks and Boise State went from being the darling of BCS busters everywhere to just another team looking for a bowl game.

After winning 24 straight games, maybe it was just not meant to be.

Nevada roared back from a 17-point halftime deficit Friday night, beating No. 3 Boise State 34-31 in overtime in a wild game for the Wolf Pack's biggest win ever. It snapped Boise State's winning streak and ended any hopes the Broncos would play in the BCS title game.

A game that the Broncos seemingly had in hand slipped away when normally efficient kicker Kyle Brotzman missed a 26-yard field goal with 2 seconds left in regulation and another from 29 yards in overtime. Nevada's redshirt freshman kicker Anthony Martinez didn't miss his chance in overtime, hitting a 34-yarder that touched off a jubilant celebration from a soldout crowd on the Nevada campus.

"We had a chance to win it," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. "You play two evenly matched teams it usually comes down to a couple of plays. It's tough, it probably shouldn't have come down to that."

In the space of one bad half, the Broncos (10-1, 6-1 Western Athletic Conference) most likely lost out on playing in any BCS bowl. On the verge of playing in a big game with a win, they will likely be relegated to the Humanitarian Bowl, played on their own blue field in Boise, or the Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco. That's good news for TCU, which was at risk of being nudged out of an automatic BCS bid by Boise State even if it completed an unbeaten season on Saturday by beating lowly Mountain West Conference rival New Mexico.

No. 19 Nevada won't get a BCS invite, either, because that is life for schools not in automatic qualifier conferences. But that didn't stop the overflow crowd at Mackay Stadium from celebrating the improbable win by their team, which was a 14-point underdog and had lost 10 straight games to Boise State.

"It is the greatest victory this university has ever had, I can tell you that," Nevada coach Chris Ault said.

Nevada (11-1, 6-1) rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to tie the game with 13 seconds left on a 7-yard pass to Rishard Mathews, who had two second-half touchdowns for the Wolf Pack. But Boise State appeared poised to pull the game out after Kellen Moore hit Titus Young with a 53-yard pass on the first play from scrimmage after the score.

Brotzman, who leads all active players in career scoring, pushed the short kick right, sending the game into overtime. Nevada won the coin toss and deferred and Brotzman came out to try another field goal, but pulled it left.

"To be honest, I was on a knee on the sideline praying, hoping we'd get another shot," said Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who passed for 259 yards and ran for a score.

Martinez, a redshirt freshman, came on after Nevada's drive stalled, then calmly stroked the ball down the middle and the celebration began.

"We're a team of destiny," Ault said. "When he missed that field goal I said, 'Here we go guys, we got it now.'"

The loss for Boise State was the first since the Broncos lost in the 2008 Poinsetta Bowl to TCU, and it came in the most improbable fashion. Boise State built up a 24-7 halftime lead and appeared on its way to a dominating win, but its offense stalled in the third quarter and Nevada began finding the rhythm with its punishing running attack.

After being held in check by Boise State's defense in the first half, Nevada outrushed Boise State 239-8 in the second.

Boise State came into the game second in total defense, allowing only 229 yards a game. Nevada had more than that on the ground alone, racking up 288 yards behind Vai Taua and Kaepernick.

Nevada was still down 24-14 entering the fourth quarter when Mathews took the ball 44 yards on an end around to make the game close. Boise State then punted for the fourth time in the second half, and the Wolf Pack drove 93 yards to tie the game on a field goal by Martinez with a 23-yard field goal with 5:14 left.

But Boise State came back on the next play from scrimmage to score on a 79-yard screen pass to Doug Martin. Nevada then took the ball and marched down the field to score the tying touchdown, setting up the wild finish.

Major Aol Mail revamp coming on Sunday

Aol Mail has announced it's about to upgrade... one day before Facebook is rumored to announce its own e-mail service.

Aol has confirmed it will be relaunching its email service this weekend, and yes, the company is fully aware of the timing (that whole Project Titan thing?).

Touting itself as the fourth most popular e-mail provider (which Compete’s most recent numbers seem to contradict), Aol announced via its tech site TechCrunch that the service was coming Sunday afternoon, but released few other details. However, Aol Mail’s speed and domain name customizations will be getting a tune up.

Despite the hype (and what almost feels like anxiety) surrounding Facebook’s move to e-mail, Aol is probably right to update its system now. A report today found that Gmail’s presence isn’t as dominant as you might think, and with Aol’s recent makeover, it’s fitting the email service gets the treatment as well.

Based on unique visitors from the US IBP (internet browsing population), Gmail is much smaller in comparison toHotmail (94% larger than Gmail) and Yahoo Mail (190% larger).

In first place comes Yahoo, holding 44% of total US internet based traffic. Next up, Hotmail with 30% of all US traffic. And in a rather distant third, Gmail ranks in.

To be fair, Gmail is the youngest web-based email client of the big three. According to Wikipedia Hotmail was established in 1994, Yahoo Mail in 1997 and Gmail in 2004.

In addition, Compete’s research has found that total webmail usage in the US is on the decline, with usage decreasing by 11% year over year from 2008 to 2010. Without knowing exactly the cause of the decline, it seems likely that the explosive use of Facebook could be one cause. For many people, Facebook has created an entirely new way of communicating with friends and family. In many respects, email may seem rather limiting in comparison to the rich features social networking can provide in keeping us connected.

This may have important implications for Facebook’s rumored email system as well as for marketers who have traditionally relied on email marketing. Facebook is rumored to be banking on the large number of connections users have to start it’s own email service, adding to the connectivity of users. It’s yet to be seen how Facebook users might engage and interact with Facebook web-based email.
