With its loftiest pier greater compared to the Eiffel Tower, it was financed by the identical business that constructed the well-known French monument. Koh Sichang

Tiny Sichang, a short boat hop from the town of Si Racha, an hour east of the Thai capital, is the nearest island to Bangkok yet has never made it onto the travellers' circuit. There's decent accommodation, thick jungles, an abandoned palace, excellent aharn talay (seafood), monkeys and a small sandy beach.

Koh Tarutao

Set in the furthest-flung southern corner of Thailand's Andaman coast, 26km long Tarutao has incredible forest-rimmed beaches, wild jungles and no mod-cons. It is part of the stunning Tarutao national marine park, which comprises 51 islands including gorgeous Koh Lipe. Accommodation and food here are basic, but it's all the better for that.

Koh Phayam

Up near the Burmese border, a two-hour boat ride from the town of Ranong, Phayam has slowly emerged as the sleepy island of choice for travellers eager to avoid the over-development of Phangan and Samui. Huge, arcing sandy beaches, excellent snorkelling, no cars and plenty of cashew trees and hornbills set the scene.
Bamboo Bungalows do what they say on the tin. There's also a tropical garden, Wi-Fi, motorbikes, surfing, snorkelling, fishing and volleyball.

Koh Jum

A short hop from the famed travellers' hub of Krabi, Jum certainly lacks the glamour of its near neighbour, Phi Phi. But this is an island to lose yourself in for weeks at a time, cut off from the world and working on your tan. Don't expect the best beaches but you will find a smattering of decent bungalows, villages of chao ley (sea gypsy) people, dense jungle and a soporific travellers' vibe.

Koh Phra Thong

Koh Phra Thong is another unspoilt island in the Andaman Sea off Thailand's west coast, near the town of Kuraburi, with around 16km of empty, golden beaches, no cars and one "road" that's a sandy track.The Golden Buddha Beach Resort is the only resort on the island, with 21 traditional Thai-style wooden houses set in the coastal woods. Neon boneyard

Old casinos never die in Vegas. They may get knocked down, rebuilt and remodelled like the Aladdin (once the Tally Ho, eventually Planet Hollywood), but one bit of them lasts forever: their neon signs. Travel north along the Las Vegas strip, past downtown, and you eventually see a large silver slipper on the central reservation. It's the first sign that you're close to the Neon Museum, collector and preserver of old neon signs and artefacts from Vegas history. At the moment the museum is fashioning itself a visitors' centre from the parabolic concrete shells that once formed the lobby of the historic Vegas La Concha motel.

The La Concha lobby, one of the best examples of Googie architecture, was designed in 1961 by Paul Revere Williams, the first African-American member of the American Institute of Architects, and, like most of the museum's collection, was saved from destruction. Fine examples of neon signage in the museum include the Aladdin's original lamp, and the Moulin Rouge sign created by graphic designer and Vegas native Betty Willis, who also made the iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign at the southern end of the Strip. More than 150 of the signs will sit in the grounds of the centre when it's finished in September. At present most are in an empty car park next to the development, though 10 signs form part of a self-guided walking tour around Fremont Street.

Pinball Hall of Fame

There may not be any neon, but there are plenty of flashing lights and ringing bells in the nondescript building in its own little pocket of mid-20th century Americana, across the street from the Liberace Museum. The squat one-storey structure houses an arcade where row upon row of pinball machines sit waiting to tease quarters from you for a few minutes of rapid-fire ringing chimes and ker-chunks of steel balls bouncing off bumpers.

The machines all belong to one man, Tim Arnold, who used to be a pinball machine dealer in Michigan. Arnold would buy the machines to put in bars and restaurants then, when they were no longer wanted, rather than scrap them for a few dollars, he would keep them. Eventually, he had a couple of hundred machines.

"It was time for me to retire so I opened the world's first pinball museum," he says. "So here I am in Las Vegas with 400 pinball machines and a big building." He has around 600 more in a "shed" at home.

In the hall of fame, machines range from 1930s and 1940s models up to modern ones. "I prefer the ones I grew up playing, from the 1960s and 1970s. The new stuff is too complicated for me. I like bing, bing, bing. That's what I like."

One of the joys of the hall of fame is that every machine is there to be played – this is not a museum. It is a shrine to Bally, Gottlieb, Williams, Stern – the makers of the machines. There is no entrance fee, games cost 25c or 50c – and there are even a few early 1980s video games should your flipper fingers fail. All proceeds go to charity.

Atomic Testing Museum

Just over an hour's drive north-west of the city is the Nevada Test Site, established in 1951 for the testing of nuclear devices. The ground there is a pockmarked, almost lunar landscape after 928 nuclear tests above and below ground between its opening and the final test in 1992. But you don't need to head out into the desert: the Atomic Testing Museum just off the Strip looks at the impact of the nuclear age on Vegas, and the world. From the early atomic tourists who came to view test blasts from rooftops in the city, to the benefits and consequences of nuclear energy, visitors get to see weapons, warheads and even experience a simulated explosion from inside a bunker. As they like to say in the museum, it's a blast.

Valley of Fire

Around an hour's drive from the strip is some of the most spectacular desert scenery in south-west America. The vivid red rock formations (made from sandstone that lay beneath millions of years ago) have been shaped by tides, wind and water to create an otherworldly vista, which has doubled for alien worlds in films such as Total Recall and Star Trek: Generations.

The Valley of Fire state park is open year-round for camping and hiking, though summer temperatures can reach 40C, and sometimes hit 50C during the day, then plummet at night. But it can be a relaxed day trip in an air-conditioned car or tour company bus.

There are also petrified logs and ancient petroglyphs dotted around the park. Some of the most accessible and outstanding rock carvings can be found at Atlatl Rock. A visitors' centre provides information on the area's geology, history and wildlife.

Black Canyon rafting

One of the main tourist attractions on offer in Las Vegas is a trip to Hoover Dam, but to get a little closer to the water, try a trip along the Colorado river through the Black Canyon nearby.

We are not talking white-water rafting here. The dam controls the flow of the river, and this is a very calm and clear stretch, suitable for all ages and abilities, as there is little more to do than sit back and enjoy the scenery and wildlife. The trip begins at the foot of the dam, granting you a spectacular and rarely seen view of the historic landmark, then it's 12 miles to your destination at Willow beach. Along the way there are opportunities to take a dip in the river, or some of the hot springs that feed into natural pools, or keep an eye out for osprey, great blue herons and desert bighorn sheep.

Shopping

Where else could you shop next to the canals of Venice one minute and stroll down a French boulevard the next? Or how about a wander around an "exotic-themed" market bazaar? Vegas has them all.

Many of the themed shopping malls hark back to Vegas's tacky past. Yes, they're homogenised and a little sterile, but it's fun to take a gondola ride among the shops under fluffy white clouds in a blue sky. And if you get fed up with constantly sunny skies, the Miracle Mile has an indoor thunderstorm, complete with rain. Or a laser show. And this is the thing about shopping in Vegas: there is always something to see aside from the shops, be it moving statues, a singing gondolier or a fashion show. CityCenter has a high-end mall called Crystals, designed by Daniel Libeskind, full of designer brands and surrounded with sculptures and installations from the likes of Antony Gormley and Henry Moore.

Slightly further away from the strip are outlet malls and the Town Square mall, situated about a mile from the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. They are all easy to get to from the Strip using the double-decker Deuce bus service that runs along the Strip to downtown.

Sushi and sake

Tucked away among the (indoor) canals and gondoliers of the Palazzo casino on the Strip sits Sushisamba, which serves a fusion of Peruvian, Brazilian and Japanese food. It runs an intriguing course combining a beginners' guide to sake with a hands-on course in sushi-making.

Sake sommelier Yuno Hayashi's family ran a sake brewing business, so she has a depth of knowledge accumulated since she was a young girl. She explains the different types of sake – you'll know your ginjo from your junmai – its history and how it is produced. You also taste a series of appetisers and complimentary rice wines to show you what can be done with the various tastes and flavours.

After the sake, one of the restaurant's sushi chefs gives a step-by-step guide to making sushi. You'll learn what to look for, how to choose the right fish, and what tools to use. From balling the rice, to spreading it on the nori seaweed sheets to rolling it, it's a lot of fun, if somewhat messy. Then it's just a case of sitting back with another glass of sake and enjoying the fruits of your labour.

It might seem unlikely that you'd find pieces of the Titanic in the middle of the desert, but they're there in Vegas, and all under the pyramid of the Luxor hotel. The exhibition takes you through the history of the ship from construction to its fateful first Atlantic crossing and displays many artefacts recovered from two-and-a-half miles beneath the Atlantic – personal belongings of crew and passengers and assorted ephemera from the ship. There's a full-scale recreation of the Grand Staircase, a huge indoor iceberg you can touch, and a piece of the hull, recovered from the sea bed.

Also in the Luxor is Bodies, the Gunther von Hagens exhibition of preserved human bodies in various stages of dissection. Whether you regard it as informational, voyeuristic or science, the Luxor has become one of the final resting places (as it were) for a show which has toured – at times controversially – all over the world.

Sticking with the nautical theme a trip to Shark Reef Aquarium at the Mandalay Bay hotel offers a glimpse of predatory aquatic life. See sharks of all kinds, along with sawfish, giant rays, endangered green sea turtles, piranhas, moon jellyfish and rare golden crocodiles. In all, there are over 2,000 animals in 1.6 million gallons of seawater.

Art

Las Vegas has tried art before. After all, if you're going to have high-end hotels, restaurants and boutiques why not have some highbrow culture? The Gallery of Fine Art at the Bellagio hotel includes works from Picasso, Renoir and Degas, and there is a burgeoning underground art scene.

The CityCenter development, opened last year, has a collection of 25 modern art installations on display around the 67-acre site of hotels, casino, and shops. Works by Gormley and Henry Moore, join pieces from Nancy Rubins, Isa Genzken and Richard Long.

For a more folksy scene, there is First Friday , a downtown gathering of artists and open galleries on the first Friday in every month. Alongside the more craft-orientated stalls there are artists trying to establish a more avant garde scene in the city.

It will come as no surprise that casinos want your money. So they offer whatever distractions they can to entice you in – cheap rooms, cheap buffets, free shows or free drinks. Take a walk along the Strip and you will pass the fountains of Bellagio, choregraphed to dance along with classic Vegas songs such as Hey, Big Spender and Luck Be a Lady. Performances run every 30 minutes from 3pm-8pm and every 15 minutes from 8pm until midnight.

Further along the Strip, Treasure Island's TI: Sirens show is billed as a pop-opera where pirates swashbuckle, high-dive and dodge pyrotechnics, while singing and dancing. It's more Carry On than a musical version of Pirates of the Caribbean, but there are enough explosions and acrobatics to make it worth catching one of the daily performances, at 5:30 pm, 7pm, 8:30pm, 10pm and 11:30pm.

Elsewhere there is the Volcano at the Mirage, or a visit to the Lion Habitat at the MGM Grand where lions from a pride of 31 take turns in an exhibit in the heart of the hotel. The lions live off site at their own ranch, but a few are transported in each day, and you can watch them feed, play and groom themselves behind the glass. Mostly they sleep.

Best for couples: Vis

Vis is an ideal romantic hideaway. As well as tucking yourselves away on one of numerous spectacular and secluded bays, you can tour the island, discovering its extensive vineyards, palm, pine, olive, oleander, fig, carob and mulberry trees, and more than 300 herbs (ideal for self-catering), local seafood and wine. My favourite "domestic" restaurant (as places that use only local or eco- produce are known) is at Stoncica Bay. Run by the Lincir brothers, it overlooks an idyllic cove. Also good are Kantun towards the Kut end of Vis town, and for a romantic meal, the palm-filled arboretum restaurant-bar of Villa Kaliopa (V Nazora 32, makes a magical setting.

Elsewhere, you can marvel at the old fishing boats at Komiza, on the south-west of the island, investigate military history from Venetian to English to Tito, or snorkel in the emerald waters of Stiniva Cove, watching out for loggerhead turtles and bottlenose dolphins. Under new ownership from the beginning of the season is Hotel San Giorgio in Kut, round the bay from Vis town. It has 10 stylish rooms doubles from €68) and offers lovely Croatian dinners and a fantastic breakfast.

Reached by catamaran or ferry from Split, Rijeka or Dubrovnik, this island was called Korkyra Melainia, "Black Korcula", by the ancient Greeks because of its dense oak and pine forests. Korcula combines a hint of Dubrovnik chic with an abundance of natural beauty. Just like Dubrovnik, the medieval old town of Korcula is squeezed onto a peninsula. The narrow stone lanes all lead down to the sea from the pretty St Mark's Square with its 15-century cathedral and museum. The latter houses Greek and Roman artefacts from the island and Venetian art, as well as documenting the local shipbuilding and stonemasonry traditions. Stay in the old town at the excellent Marco Polo apartments doubles from €35). The explorer is said to have been born in Korcula in 1254.

As well as the architectural splendour, sample the work of Croatian artists in the Gallery Vapor , before retiring to a cafe on the tree-lined promenade overlooking the sea and the 48 smaller islands that make up the Korcula archipelago. Catch a taxi boat to Badija or Vrnik, just off shore, or head inland to visit the vineyards and bell-towers of Zrnovo.

For food, try U Maje i Tonke, just metres from the harbour entrance to the old town. Its "Dalmatian tapas", all made from local produce (goat's cheese, ham, fish paste, aubergines) cost from 30KN (£3.75) and it has great local wines. For the traditional Dalmatian outdoor grill of fish orcevapcici (tasty sausage stubs of minced pork, lamb or beef), try Planjak on the edge of the old town near the ferry terminal, from £6.

Situated in the Kvarner region of the northern Adriatic, and reached by ferry from Zadar, Mali Losinj is an island in an archipelago of more than 30 small isles. The colour of the sea is an astonishing deep green as the island is heavily forested. Because of this, it's known as the island of vitality, ideal for those needing a rejuvenating break.

In the main port, also called Mali Losinj, try the Klickovic apartments doubles from €37) for heart-soothing views across St Martin's Bay. Veli Losinj, about a mile south, is an old fishing settlement with a mix of Venetian and Greek features and beautiful bays ideal for a restorative swim. Renew your sense of smell at the Aromatic Island Garden on the edge of town, where a guided tour takes you through a heavenly sample of the island's flora and fauna. Then get hiking through the Cikat park and forest. After all that healthy activity, you can treat yourself to fine traditional dishes at Konoba Dalmacija .

Pag is known for its stunning moonlike landscape, its secluded coves, and for cheese, lamb, lace, and salt. For peaceful, rocky bays, you should aim for Proboj, though best of all is Lun on the northernmost end of the island. The town (with an Illyrian and Roman past) also boasts vineyards and olive trees, and the salty grass (from strong sea winds) gives the sheep's cheese and meat its distinctive flavour. Visit a family-run cheese factory, Sirana Gligora (sirena.hr), in the village of Kolan, and in Pag town there's a salt museum and a gallery of traditional lace. Also here is the small, friendly Dalmatian-style Konoba Bile (Jurija Dalmatinca 35, konoba means tavern), serving local prsut (Dalmatian double-smoked ham), sardines, the famous cheese, local brandy and wines. You may also hear locals singing traditional songs.

The ferry arrives in the old town, Stari Grad, which lies at the bottom of a stunning five-mile-long bay, sheltered by densely wooded hills. The town was founded in the year of Aristotle's birth (384BC), and is a maze of stone alleys, along which Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson once lost themselves. They also dined at the Jurin Podrum restaurant which now serves nouvelle cuisine dishes of local seafood (from shrimp to grouper to octopus stew with homemade olive bread), followed by lavender-flower deserts.

In the centre of town is Tvrdalj castle, home of 16th-century poet, Petar Hektorovic. It has a tower, a baroque portal, a pond teeming with mullet and an exquisite garden. Stay in the old town, close to the majestic St Stephen's tower, at San Nikola Apartments studios for two from €40 a night).

If you want to join the designer party crowd amid exquisite Venetian and Austrian architecture, take a 20-minute bus ride to Hvar town. In peak season, the town is heaving with Italians, non-stop party posers, and, of late, posh English yachties.one-bed flats from €30 a night) is just steps away from the harbour.

Take a taxi boat (from £3.75) to St Clement, one of the nearby Pakleni (meaning "pine resin") islands for lunch at the Bacchus "domestic" restaurant on Palmizana bay ,Sitting under olive trees and overlooking the sea, you can choose from grilled fish, wild boar and goat's meat, and a selection of tasty local cheeses, fruits and patés, all washed down with localprosek, a sweet dessert wine. Back in Hvar town.

When you're tired of Hvar's bars and boutiques, visit its 17th-century theatre, and the 13th-century Arsenal (once used for repairing war galleys), where you'll find a great art gallery, Hvaroom and a terrace cafe. Most of the nightlife is pretty in-your-face, but down an alley off the harbour indie club Bar Kiva has a recently installed old oak floor and caters for a cooler clientele, with good music and cocktails. Or watch the yachts (and celebrities) in the harbour from the relaxing vantage point of Caffe Gromit (yes, named after the Plasticine mutt!)

WINNING TIP: Adrasan, Lycian coast

Adrasan sits in a cove 10km off the main road. At the north end of the beach, Hotel Paradise perches on a riverside flowing down to the beach, with seating areas in the shallow riverbed – a very cool ambience. For hikers the Lycian Way leads north over a rocky outcrop to Olympus, where the ruins are open to clamber over. Then it's a gentle 4km walk along the beach to see the eternal flames bursting from the rock at Chimera.

Dalyan
I don't think many British people have heard of Dalyan but it is such a lovely, small resort. Ideal for families, it has a variety of activities, from mud baths (lots of fun) to turtle-spotting. We stayed at the Aydos Club hotel in Dalyan, which is small and friendly, booked through Simpson Travel. Rahmi, the owner, organised activities to keep everyone entertained and we felt like royalty sailing in their traditional boat.

Turkmen Treehouses, Olympus
Tucked away among the cliffs and forests in an old Lycian valley are the Turkmen treehouses. Wake up each morning high up among the birds and enjoy breakfast in a hammock beneath your tree. Days are spent exploring the valley, with boat trips, canyoning, swimming and hiking. Evenings are for watching the bright stars from the comfort of your gazebo while listening to live music from the Golge bar.

Cirali
Last year, we found the perfect place for a "proper beach holiday" with our two kids: a little guesthouse on Olympus beach, southern Turkey. The owners looked after us with lovely home-cooked breakfasts and dinners served on the terrace overlooking the sea. The beach is a conservation area because it is a nesting ground for turtles. If you're there in August and fancy getting up with the sun, you can see new-born turtles making their way to the sea.

Cirali
The coastal hamlet of Cirali, 80km south-west of Antalya on the Lycian Way, is a pure delight. This low-key resort in the Beydaglari national park is a popular holiday spot with Turkish families and the odd western European who, like us, arrived by happy fluke. The excellent 3km beach is a popular nesting site for loggerhead and green sea turtles, and the crystal clear water makes for superb swimming. At the northern end of the beach you can explore the ruins of the ancient Lycian city of Olympus, where visitors to the beach ramble over the ruins of an amphitheatre, aqueducts and byzantine tombs. You can opt for quirky treehouse accommodation in the Olympus valley, or a more peaceful option is to stay in Cirali itself at one of the small guesthouses.

It's usually a bad sign when I take my family out and all three are in tears by the end of the day. Ten seconds in, rattling up the chain, he wanted to get off. When the g-force kicked in on the first big dip, he really wanted to get off. I explained, calmly, while being whizzed, white-knuckled, in circles round the steel track (on the edge of a cliff) that that wasn't possible and, look, there were only two more dips to go... Still, it'll save us a fortune not going to Alton Towers.

Panic over, as Ed's brain processed his body's reactions, we decided to calm down on the log flume. Or, as we later realised from the map, the Raging River ride. As we queued, happy, soaking wet youths giggled on their way out. We floated gently round the track, forewarning our sons of the slide and splash that awaited us at the end of the ride. Only the slide turned out to be twice as long as we expected, long enough for Jane and I to wonder, as we clung to a boy each, how much longer it would take until splash-down.

In my arms, Finlay, five, shrieked in genuine, abject terror. Safely on dry land, we broke a family rule and bought the cheesy picture taken by the automatic camera, so the boys in years to come can wave it in front of us and say: "See what you did to me." What a fantastic day.

Look up any guide to Hong Kong and you might be forgiven for thinking the only thing to do there is shop. New malls crop up daily, it seems, and when you're done bagging designer labels there are bargains in the Chinese markets to be had. But clothes shopping is just no fun with young kids in tow.

So, when our expat friend Kenny invited me and my family to spend our summer holiday there, we had to think twice. Then an Observercolleague came back enthusing about a walking holiday there, proving that you could exercise more than your credit card. Thinking back to my previous Hong Kong visit 25 years ago, and my wife Jane to hers 15 years ago, we each recalled an excitement about the city, an exotic mix of east and west. And now there's Disneyland too...

The Peak on Hong Kong island is a good place to get your bearings. A tram takes you up from the Central business district so steeply that your rucksack slides down the floor to the back of the carriage. At the top, once you've retrieved your bag you emerge to... a new shopping mall.

Head 50 yards up a path past the shops, and there's a stunning view: a harbour teeming with boats large and small, fringed by a forest of skyscrapers and hemmed in by lush, green mountains. Plunge down again and you enter a city in perpetual motion by a dizzying variety of means. In two weeks Eddie and Finlay notched up more than a dozen different forms of transport, from rickety old trams to superfast jetfoils.

One of their favourites was the Ngong Ping 360 cable car on Lantau, the largest of Hong Kong's archipelago of 260 islands. If you're lucky you'll get one of the Crystal Cabin cars with a glass floor, so vertigo-suffering Dad can watch his sons sprawl flat to look at sampan fishermen hundreds of feet below, as you rise up to a giant bronze statue of Buddha.

From there, we took a minibus down to the fishing village of Tai O. Sprawling shacks perched on stilts above a river, and stalls sold live fish and shrimps from glass tanks. Strings of dried swim bladders (prized for stews and soups) hung from shop rafters at prices up to an incredible HK$40,000 (about £3,000) apiece.

Cheung Sha beach

Taking a circular route back to our ride home, we passed the long, golden sands of Cheung Sha beach. If only we'd brought our cossies that day, we'd have joined the handful of Hong Kongers splashing about. They were watched over by a team of yellow-clad lifeguards and a couple of elderly cleaners patrolling the beach in wide-brimmed hats.

Still, the scene provided a fitting moment of enlightenment under the gaze of the big Buddha. It was our summer holiday, so how about some bucket and spade fun alongside the city break? If you can have a walking holiday in Hong Kong, why not a beach one?

We took a ferry to Cheung Chau, only 20 minutes from Central. It's one of the islands populated by commuters who choose to live away from the tower blocks in low-rise homes, and also popular with daytrippers.

Stepping off the boat was like landing in a busy Greek harbour. Fishing boats bobbed yards from seafood restaurants along the quay and cyclists on hired bikes weaved in and out of a relaxed crowd perusing the menus.

After a spectacular squid lunch, we walked a few hundred yards across the centre of the island to a great little beach, thronged with families. Like every public beach, we were to discover, it had free, very clean changing facilities and showers, clearly marked lifeguard zones and a reassuring shark net.

We had a great time splashing about and sandcastling. It could have been the Med but for the occasional Cantonese public-address announcement and the sight of Hong Kong's skyscrapers across the water.

We went in July, so it was baking hot (37C) and a couple of hours was all we could take. To be honest, I'd go in spring or autumn, particularly October and November, when the humidity eases off, if I were you. But the local speciality of a frozen fruit kebab, in lieu of hard-to-find ice cream, was a great way to cool off at the end and feel nutritionally virtuous at the same time.

On the hippy-vibed Lamma, we took in a family beach (in the shadow of a power station) followed by an hour's hike across the island, through woods teeming with butterflies. But for a wilder day out, we headed east beyond Kowloon's high-rises to Sai Kung Country Park, and joined a bunch of expats on a hired party junk. It motored out through islets and channels for an hour until it found a quiet cove then dropped anchor, and we splashed in the South China Sea while the crew fixed us food and drink all day. Very civilised.

Our last beach day started with an exhilarating bus ride over the Dragon's Back ridge to Shek O, on the easternmost tip of Hong Kong island itself. This was a proper seaside place, with bucket and spade shops and laidback cafes. The beach was buzzing with crowds of teenagers chasing each other excitedly.

It looked great, but when the boys and I dashed into the sea we found a filthy mess of plastic flotsam, drink bottles and food wrappers. Plastic bags wrapped around our legs like seaweed. Maybe we were unlucky, and the currents happened to be against us that day. Otherwise, the authorities need to get cleaning.

There's something mesmeric about a port in full flow. The iconic old green and white Star ferries still ply between Hong Kong island and Tsim Sha Tsui, in mainland Kowloon, as they have for more than a century. Public transport is really cheap: pence rather than pounds. And you don't have to worry about tickets with an Octopus card. As you'd expect, we had accidental adventures and casually absorbed some Hong Kong culture along the way. In a half-hour dash through the lovely Botanic Gardens we encountered a flailing giant tortoise flipped upside down in a fight with its cellmate, orang-utans and a baby lemur that escaped its cage and went walkabout in the trees. We became proficient with chopsticks, trying out fabulous noodles and dim sum. We saw the city fill with Filipina maids on Sundays as they gathered for streetside picnics on their day off. And, from the half-mile-long series of outdoor escalators en route to SoHo, we admired the beauty of neon Chinese characters that hung three storeys high off offices and shops. Characters of a different kind inhabit Hong Kong Disneyland. The theme park opened in 2005 on Lantau and has been criticised for being too small, but we found it perfect for boys our age. We stayed at the art-deco style Hollywood Hotel, splashed with Goofy in its swimming pool then nipped to the next door Disneyland Hotel to meet Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Tigger and Piglet over dinner.

Next day, in the actual park, apart from the Chinese "cast members" there wasn't a particularly oriental tinge to the fun available. We cruised a piranha-infested jungle river, zapped laser guns with Buzz Lightyear and flew up and down on Dumbo's back. Hawaii's Lilo and Stitch were the big stars on show, rather than China's own Mulan and her dragon buddy. When the temperature got too hot we headed indoors for a Lion King show, or got sprayed with hoses during Mickey's energetic Waterworks Parade. To top off the day, we gathered by Sleeping Beauty's castle to watch a spectacular firework display. And when the magic was all over we headed back to the city in a Mickey Mouse train – a proper train, that is, with mouse ear-shaped windows.

If I were passing through Hong Kong on a stopover, I'd be tempted to stay here, have a day at Disney, and a day in the city; it's only half an hour away.

So, we did it, a family holiday in Hong Kong: buckets and spades; chopsticks and pandas; Lilo and Stitch; bright lights, big city. What more could a young boy want?

For all the glamour, glitz, and grandeur that have come to define Dubai, Pierchic stands out for being just the opposite: understated, low-slung, and vernacular in its architectural style. Its wooden beams blend right in with the simple, 500-foot jetty that connects the over-water dining room to Jumeirah Beach and provides enough distance to take in the man-made Palm Jumeirah Island and the full height of Burj Al Arab's 1,000-foot-tall glass sail. It's like dinner theater for the dive set—and there's not a bad seat in the house. Ithaa is located 16 feet below the surface of the Indian Ocean. Its tunnel shape and glass walls reveal a breathtaking seascape of unspoiled coral atolls, schools of parrot fish, and giant stingrays to 12 lucky diners. The menu is rich with decadent dishes like caviar, line-caught reef fish and rock lobster, but if you'd rather not look out the window for your ordering inspiration, seared veal tenderloin and button-mushroom soup make for suitable substitutions. And while the four-course lunch menu is undoubtedly a splurge, it's still cheaper than getting certified to scuba. Note that tables can only be reserved two weeks in advance.
