Lewis Hamilton

Hamilton’s first contact with a form of motor sport came through driving RC cars. His father Anthony bought him one in 1991 and aged six Hamilton was runner-up in a national RC racing championship. “I was racing these remote-controlled cars and winning club championships against adults,” remembered Hamilton. After that Anthony wondered if Lewis’s skills might transfer to full-size motorsport. Lewis's brother Nic runs nitro off road competitively and is sponsored by LRP. Pedro de la Rosa

Pedro no longer races RC cars but in 1986 he finished second in a world championship, according to F1 Racing magazine (Feb 2013). Pedro's last year in F1 was racing for HRT in 2013 before the team folded at the end of the 2013 season. Pedro was the second oldest F1 driver on the grid at 41. Since his F1 debut in 1999 he has raced, or been a test driver, for Jordan, Arrows, Prost, Jaguar, McLaren and Sauber. The man gets around!

Australasian World F1 Champions

Jack Brabham (F1 world champion 1959, 1960, 1966)

Three times world champion. One of the few with that claim to fame which puts him in the esteemed company of Vettel, Senna, Lauda, Piquet and Stewart. The only drivers to win more than three times were Prost (4x), Fangio (5x) and Schumacher (7x). He is the only man to have won the world championship in a car that bears his name (1966). He sold the Brabham team to Bernie Ecclestone in 1971. 126 Grand Prix starts, 14 victories. Sir Jack passed away in 2014.

Alan Jones (F1 world champion 1980)

His first F1 race was in 1975. He started 116 Grand Prix and won 12 times.

New Zealand

Denny Hulme (F1 world champion 1967)

Hulme started in F1 in 1965 with a 9 year career. He died of a heart attack at Bathurst in 1992. Hulme made 112 Grand Prix starts and won 8 times.

Mark Webber (Aus)

Mark is Australia's third most successful F1 driver ever based on his number of podiums. Go webbo!!! Mark's home page. Mark retired from F1 at the end of 2013. Daniel Riccardo replaced him at Red Bull.

Bruce McLaren (NZ)

The man who gave his name to the current McLaren team started 101 Grand Prix and won 4 times. His F1 debut was in 1958 and he held the title of youngest winner for many years. Jack Brabham mentored Bruce. After Bruce McLaren's death testing one of his CanAm cars in 1970, Bruce's business partner Teddy Mayer continued to run Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd laying the groundwork for the team we see on the track today.

Chris Amon (NZ)

Competed at the top level for 14 years from 1963. He started in 96 Grand Prix but some believe he was unlucky never to win one. He was on the podium 11 times and won 2 non-championship F1 races.

Will Power (Aus)

Understanding The Basics Of A Nitro RC Car Glow Engine

The first and foremost consideration when attempting to tune your glow engine is understanding the basic parts and their functions. By understanding the fundamentals, you can better tune your engine for maximum performance while at the same time, expanding the life of your engine.

Carburetor
The carburetor is the mechanism that mixes fuel and air in very specific proportions and passes it on to the engine through the vacuum intake. The natural operation of the engines causes of flow of gases to pass through the engine (through the carburetor) and out the exhaust manifold and on to the pipe or muffler. The exact mechanism for this is unimportant for the scope of this tutorial, however it is important to realize that air and fuel pass into the engine by this vacuum method. Depending on how you adjust your carburetor, you can either adjust how much of this gas/air mixture reaches the engine and to what proportion of gas to air passes on to the engine. By reducing the amount of fuel per volume of air, you are making the mixture "lean" and by increasing the amount of fuel, you are making the mixture "rich".

Idle-Speed Adjustment
This is the most basic and easy to understand part of tuning your carburetor. This spring-tensioned screw limits the closure of the barrel aperture. Although this doesn't affect the mixture of the fuel it does affect the idle speed. The more closed the aperture is, the slower the idle, the larger the aperture, the faster. As you close this aperture up and the idle speed decreases, you will eventually (sooner than later) stall the engine out. In order for the engine to run, it must have enough inertial energy built up in the engine and flywheel to carry it through the entire ignition cycle. Generally speaking, you want to adjust this down to the slowest idle, just before it begins to stall.

Low-End Mixture Adjustment
Adjusts the fuel mixture at or near idle. Some engines lack this low-end mixture valve for reasons of simplicity, however this makes accurate tuning difficult.
For barrel carbs, this mixture valve is generally found where the throttle-arm pivots. Some are countersunk; others are clearly visible from the outside. On slide carbs, they are generally found on the opposite side of the carb from the throttle slide shaft (has an accordion billow type rubber boot over it) next to, but below the fuel-inlet and high-end mixture valve.

High-End Mixture Adjustment
Also known as the Main Needle adjustment, this is the primary fuel mixture adjustment. This is generally found on the top end of the engine, typically next to where the fuel line goes into the engine. Some are flat-head screws like the low-end mixture, others are hand adjustable valves. More

Gearing A Basic Overview

On an electric car, there are 2 Gears on your car that you need to worry about changing: the Spur Gear and the Pinion Gear. The Pinion Gear is the one attached to the motor, the Spur Gear being the gear the pinion comes in contact with. On a Nitro vehicle, you might have 4 gears...2 for the 2-speed on the motor and 2 for the 2-speed on the 'drive train'.

Changing the Pinion or Spur Gears will result in much different results.

On the Pinion Gear, the higher the number of teeth, the faster (top end) your car will have, but you will lose acceleration. The lower the number of teeth, the faster your car will accelerate, but you will lose top end. More top end usually results in less run time, also.

On the Spur Gear, the higher the number of teeth, the more acceleration the car will have, but the less top end. The lower the number of teeth the more top end you will have, but you will lose acceleration.

Changing the Gearing
On an electric car, the Pinion is changed by loosening the screws to the motor (or, in some cases, removing it from the car) and then removing the Pinion. Slide the new Pinion on, re-install in car (if applicable), and adjust the Gear mesh.

To change the Spur requires a little more work. Depending on the vehicle you own, it could be as easy as removing 2 screws or disassembling a whole portion of the car. See your instruction manual for the procedure as it applies to your vehicle.

On a Nitro vehicle, changing the Pinion gears requires the removal of the motor from the car (in most cases). You will then need to remove the gears from the clutch bell and replace with the appropriate gears.
Changing the Spur Gears on a Nitro vehicle requires the disassemble of a portion of the car (in most cases) to remove the gears and replace with the appropriate ones. See your instruction manual for the procedure as it applies to your vehicle. more

Gas and electric powered radio control cars are both fun but are very different. Here are some side by side photos and comparison of on-road touring cars in electric and gas (i.e nitro) models.

Here I am using the term gas and nitro interchangeably as when we talk about gas rc cars we commonly mean kits with nitro powered engines.

Nitro Engine Storage

While many engines always have a home in the vehicles that they are used in, there are a lot of drivers that may have a spare engine waiting to go, either for racing or as a back-up for a basher vehicle. For those that do, we hope you are properly storing that expensive mill so nothing happens to it while it’s waiting for its turn in the engine mounts. Here, we’re going to give you some simple tips to properly store your nitro powerplant.
WHY PREP YOUR ENGINE FOR STORAGE?
What could go wrong while an engine is in storage you ask? Plenty! If an engine is stored too long, there is a chance that unburnt fuel sitting in the engine or bearings can evaporate over time and, along with temperature changes, can start to turn the oils into gunk that can clog up and cause friction in the engine. Moisture is also a threat to any steel parts within the engine and finally, there is debris. You know, dust and dirt, which can make their way into any part of your vehicle, such as the engine’s carb or exhaust, and once in there can damage the engine when you fire it up. So lets talk steps to keep your engine protected.

OIL IT- The first step for engine storage is adding a number of drops of a good after-run oil. An after-run oil is much less likely to turn into that nasty gunk over time and it coats your engine internals to protect them. Add a few drops down the carb venturi as well and then add a few more into the exhaust port if it’s exposed. Or you can take out the plug, drop oil in the top of the chamber and replace the plug.

CAP IT- When you’re done adding after-run oil to the inside of the engine and you’ve rocked the crank back and forth a few times to coat the internals, it’s a good idea to ensure the oil stays in. Use caps, such as these shown here from TrakPower, to keep the oils in. Capping will also keep the debris out of your mill while it sits in your pit bag or on your bench. Cap the carb venturi, fuel nipple and exhuast port. If your exhaust is still fitted to your engine, add caps to the exhaust stinger and pressure nipple.

BAG IT- Now that your engine has been oiled and capped, its a good idea to place it in a plastic bag along with a silica gel packet and zip it closed to keep moisture and debris away from the engine.

GOING OVERBOARD- Looking for that extra bit of protection during storage? Consider an engine bag from Outerwears. This fabric bag with an inner liner keeps your engine neatly stowed and secured inside with its Velcro closure.
WRAP UP
A few simple steps and a few neat products are all you need to keep your engine stored and safe. Take the time to care for your engine and it will be there, ready to go, when you need it!

The company began in Else’s 2 car garage, where he would build battery packs after coming home from work as a mortgage broker. Else’s wife, Shannon answered phone calls and shipped out packages from the living room during the day.

RC Cars| DISPOSAL OF LIPO BATTERIES From Thunder Power RC

Unlike NiCd batteries, lithium-polymer batteries are environmentally friendly. For safety reasons, it’s best that LiPo cells be fully discharged before disposal (however, if physically damaged it is NOT recommended to discharge LiPo cells before disposal -see below for details). The batteries must also be cool before proceeding with disposal instructions. To dispose of LiPo cells and packs:

If any LiPo cell in the pack has been physically damaged, resulting in a swollen cell or a split or tear in a cell’s foil covering, do NOT discharge the battery. Jump to step 5.
Place the LiPo battery in a fireproof container or bucket of sand.
Connect the battery to a LiPo discharger. Set the discharge cutoff voltage to the lowest possible value. Set the discharge current to a C/10 value, with “C” being the capacity rating of the pack. For example, the “1C” rating for a 1200mAh battery is 1.2A, and that battery’s C/10 current value is (1.2A / 10) can be used, such as a power resistor or set of light bulbs as long as the discharge current doesn’t exceed the C/10 value and cause an overheating condition. For LiPo packs rated at 7.4V and 11.1V , connect a 150 ohm resistor with a power rating of 2 watts (commonly found at Radio Shack)to the pack’s positive and negative terminals to safely discharge connecting it to an ESC/ motor system and allowing the motor to run indefinitely until no power remains to further cause the system to function.
Discharge the battery until its voltage reaches 1.0V per cell or lower. For resistive load type discharges, discharge the battery for up to 24 hours.
Submerse the battery into bucket or tub of salt water. This container should have a lid, but it should not need to be air-tight. Prepare a plastic container (do not use metal) of cold water. And mix in 1/2 cup of salt per gallon of water. Drop the battery into the salt water. Allow the battery to remain in the tub of salt water for at least 2 weeks.
Remove the LiPo battery from the salt water, wrap it in newspaper or paper towels and place it in the normal trash. They are landfill safe.

definitely a bit speedier than the electric option.

Gas-powered cars are by far the most common when you are looking
at hobby grade cars. The equipment required to handle all of the

less agile. However, it makes up for this deficiency by being
one the fastest choices. These types of motor kits are very easy
to find.

If you want one for your car, your best bet would be to look in
some online specialty shops, or your local hobby shop. While it
is not necessarily a positive aspect in my book, the fact that

RC drag car racing can turn a fun hobby into a profitable
business and it's not as difficult as you might imagine. Of
course, building a quality RC drag car racing track does require
some cash in the bank.

Finding a smooth, level area is the first consideration in
building an RC drag car racing track. The finest surface for RC
drag car racing is ultra-smooth asphalt; the kind found in
playgrounds and skateboard parks. Besides finding a level
surface, it will also have to meet certain area requirements.
Including a shutdown area, 200 feet is ideal; 150 feet should be
considered a bare minimum. You'll also need a width of at least
ten feet for each lane.

The ideal RC drag car racing track requires extra traction.
Although many tracks get by using a blend of sugar and water,
for the best conditions possible you should use a special
traction compound known as VHT. The problem is that VHT doesn't
come cheap; if you find a gallon for less than $10, pick it up.
Of course, you can always invest in a drum of VHT for somewhere
in the $750 range. Even so, a drum may only last you around ten
races. Because VHT is so pricy, most people cut it with alcohol
to make it last longer. Typically, VHT is applied only to first
60 feet of the track.

Of course, RC drag car racing wouldn't be drag racing without a
timer. Various types of timer units can found in most hobby
stores, or you check out eBay for an older system. A new timing
tree will probably set you back anywhere from two to three
grand; unless it's in mint condition, you really shouldn't pay
more than $1500 for a used one, and shop around if the price is
even that high. If you're patient, you might even be able to get
a used RC drag car racing timing tree for under $1000.

Although certainly not a requirement, you might want to invest
protection for runaway cars. The excitement of RC drag car
racing stems from the thrill of breakaway speed and often
results in out of control cars. You can buy and decorate boards
for anywhere from $250 to $500, depending on how realistic you
want them. In addition to protecting runaway vehicles, the
boards also serve to mark boundaries; they add realism to the
look and feel of the track that you can't get from using pylons.

These are the primary expenses associated with building an RC
drag car racing track. Once you get it up and going, however,
you may want to look into the cost of trophies, a lighting
system for night racing, and even cash awards. Of course, those
kinds of expenses should only be considered after you've started
bringing in money by charging entry fees for your races.

Volkswagen Formula 3 Engine Ready For Competition

In the past, Volkswagen has been an engine supplier for
motorsports but it pulled out in the 1980s. But the largest
European automaker is now making a comeback as it announced
earlier this year that they will be supplying engines to teams
competing in DTM. The announcement was welcomed by enthusiasts
of the sport who remembered the championships won by teams
supplied with engine by Volkswagen. Recently, the automaker
announced that the engines are ready to see action and it will
be used come August 31.

and Jonathan Summerton, both driving for Italian Team RC
Motorsport along with Marco Holzer driving for AM Holzer
Rennsport, will be the first three drivers who will be using the
new engine from Volkswagen.

Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen said that the engine
has been tested already in the lab and it is now time to see
what it can do in competition. "The new Formula 3 engine from
Volkswagen has completed many hours of rig testing and reeled
off plenty of test kilometers on the track. Now it's time to
test it in direct competition," said Nissen.

Nissen added that the first races that the new Volkswagen
engines will be used will provide them with information on how
to further improve the performance of the racing engine. "The
first races are intended to help us assess where we stand and to
give us new information we can use in the unit's evolution for
the coming season," said Nissen.

According to the manufacturer, the engine that they will supply
to racing teams competing in Formula 3 is based on the design of
an engine used for production cars. The production version of
the engine is only rated to produce 150 horsepower but it has
the reliability that Volkswagen is known for. The engine that
will be supplied to Formula 3 teams uses lightweight materials,
has a robust design, and is compact. Although the racing engine
is much more powerful than its production version, it would be a

and other auto parts.

Jonathan Summerton have been testing the new engine on the
tracks and the driver said that the engine is performing well
and that he is now looking forward to competing with the new
Volkswagen engine to see how they match up against other teams.
"Power and performance of the Volkswagen engine are already at a
high level. I'm eager to see where we stand compared with the
competition," said the Florida native.

Aside from Summerton, the other two drivers will also be testing
the new engine for three hours on Thursday. Gotz said: "The
possibility to test suits us well because it allows us to work
out the optimal set-up for our car without being pressured by
time." Marco Holzer, on the other hand, said that the
partnership with Volkswagen is a step forward for his team. "The
collaboration with Volkswagen is a major step forwards for us,"
said Marco Holzer.

Nitro RC Cars Nitro RC car or Gas powered RC car is a
radio-controlled model car that runs on a special fuel - a mix
of oil, nitro-methane and methyl alcohol. The ESP of a Nitro RC
car is that it is far more powerful and runs longer compared to
Electric RC cars. They are a little more expensive than their
electric counterparts - both to own and maintain. While electric
RC cars are ideal for beginners, Nitro RC cars are ideal for
serious hobbyists and racers. Basically, a Nitro RC car has an
internal combustion engine of 2-stroke or 4-stroke type. Fuel is

more dirt and grease. More the running components in any system
mean there will be more wear and tear. Both these add to the
maintenance cost. But for the sheer power and racing range, the
Nitro RC cars are the leaders in RC toys. For your choice, they
are available in 1/8, 1/10, 1/12, 1/20 scales as well as mini
nitro RC cars. The 1/8 and 1/10 scale Nitro RC cars are popular
with racers and serious hobbyists. One can buy them in any hobby
stores or in internet commerce sites for between $200 to $400.
This is a hefty price, indeed! But it does not cost you a
fortune like the real racing cars, yet helps fulfil your racing
dreams. At 60 to 100 kmph speeds, they are very fun and
exciting!

transmission: Transmits power from gear box to differentials. It
differs slightly as whether the car is 2 wheel driven or 4 wheel
driven. Servos: These are tiny motors for control the
acceleration, speed and steering of car. Batteries: Even a Nitro
RC car need a battery pack to power its servo, electronics and
head lights etc. Other systems like Chassis, body, wheels and
axles, etc. are similar to Electric RC cars. So, before choosing
a Nitro RC car kit, decide on what kind of car and engine you
want. Also, check what additional accessories the pack contains,

RC Toys (Radio Controlled toys) can be toy grade or hobby
grade.

The toy-grade RC Toys can be available at a cheap rate in
almost every retail store. They are made of non-serviceable
parts and are produced in bulk. The RC Toys are not very robust
in their speed or abilities.

A RC device of one toy cannot be used in another toy. They are
not durable and are of "soft" material; these RC toys are mostly
not able to take on the rugged terrain outdoors. They are
available in "ready to use", "buy and play" models and need no
assembly. The only thing that will be required is to open the
battery case and put in the batteries, and then the toy is ready

On the other hand, hobby grade RC toys are made of durable
