My Book Review:
It Happened at the Fair by Deeanne Gist is an eventful historical romance. Cullen McNamara is a farmer from North Carolina who is forced by his father to exhibit his automatic sprinkler invention at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Despite Cullen's misgivings about spending so much money on a product that he really doesn't want to share, he is not ready to leave his girlfriend for 6 months. But with a set wedding date and a reason to possibly save the farm if he sells his invention, he goes to the White City. However, he is not used to the extreme noise of the building where he sits all day and being hard of hearing, he decides to hire a lip-reading tutor, Della Wentworth. Their lessons soon draw them closer together. Della falls in love with Cullen, and he with her, but he neglects to share that he is already engaged. Meanwhile, Cullen is discouraged at the lack of interest in his product and decides to do a demonstration that is sabotaged. His only bright spot is his friendship with Della until his fiancé shows up. Della is confused and feels betrayed. Cullen tries to straighten out his love life and finds new ways to sell his product. But will Della forgive Cullen and will Cullen honestly make a choice as to whom he will marry?

This book combines a sweet love story in the backdrop of an amazing historical event. I absolutely loved the characters in this book, the setting and the story. The author draws the reader in with the plight of the characters and the feelings each have, but don't share out loud. Combined with the incredible World's Fair, the buildings, the people, the exhibits and the prejudices of that time concerning deaf people, this book is a hidden gem of pure historical romance. I fell in love with Cullen and Della and their interactions. They began to see things in each other that only lovers do. And I was thrilled to read all the great descriptions of the fair. I enjoy history and I had never heard of this event. And the author even included a picture at the beginning of every chapter. That really brought the story to life for me. This was a fantastic book and I recommend any history lover to check this out. Enjoy the romance and be swept away in the era of 1893.

Susan shares stories with passion, humor, practicality and understanding. She goes beyond the story to discover the soul of each woman. And she makes realistic parallels with modern day working women. You will meet Eve, Rahab, Deborah, Ruth, Jezebel, Huldah, The Widow in Debt, Esther, Proverbs 31 Woman, Mary, Martha, Lydia and Priscilla. These women of the Bible are true mentors for all women today.

This book took me by surprise! I was highly impressed with Susan's perspective and retelling of well-known stories of the Bible about women I love reading about. However, she dug deep to reveal "real" working women who faced challenges and frustrations that correspond to our modern life. These women paved the way for all women to come. She included both positive and negative examples and of course, the Timeless Mentor: Jesus. Her writing style was like reading a novel. I honestly couldn't put this book down. And even though I am a Stay At Home Mom I realized that I truly am a working mom in need of a mentor to draw wisdom from. I would definitely recommend this for a pleasurable and informative read.

Marriage is a two-for.

You know what a two-for is, don’t you? You buy one, get one for free. When you marry your sweetheart, you actually get more than just one free. You get an entire additional family. What a bargain!

April is National Math Awareness Month. Apparently, some of us weren’t paying attention when that celebration rolled our way. Mama told me, “Marry the man, marry the family.”

But the marriage math doesn’t end there. “And the two shall become one flesh. Since they are no longer two, but one” (Mark 10:8 NIV). Do the Math Awareness people have that one figured out? I doubt it.

God planned this unique mathematical equation: 1+1=1. If it sounds impossible, it’s not. But it’s not simple, either. I’ve been married 37 years. When people ask how we’ve managed to stay together, happy all these years, I reply, “I travel a lot.” We joke that after all these years, Ron’s concluded it’s “cheaper to keep her.” A sense of humor probably doesn’t hurt either. We’ve agreed to take marriage seriously, and ourselves less so. It’s hard to stay mad when you’re laughing.

God knew it wouldn’t be easy for us to set aside our “me first” human nature and put things in biblical order. God expects to be first, and wants our spouse to be next in priority. Romans 12 reminds us, “in honor give preference to one another.” That puts me in spot number three in my life, running contrary to my selfish nature. But if I prefer my husband and he prefers me, we are each well cared for and the relationship is in order as together we submit to God. But if I get just one item out of order—my job, or friends, even my kids—the math equation begins to come apart.

The good news is that God is there when we forget how to add it up. And since He created marriage, He has provided the manual on how to care for it and how to repair it when needed.

So go to the author of the instruction manual on marriage. The one who believed it possible, if not easy, to create one from two. “Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together” (Matthew 19:6). Although this sounds like a warning against outside influences, it’s also a reminder to couples that even we do not have God’s approval to blow up our marriages when things get tough.

Marriage. Crazy math. Questions? Go to the great mathematician. He’s got it solved.

My review:
Get ready for the suspense ride of your life! Shattered by Dani Pettrey is a novel of twists and turns, old loves, long standing loves and new love. The McKenna family is shocked when vagabond brother Reef stumbles into their home with blood all over his hands and with witnesses to testify of his "guilt." Piper, his sister, and Deputy Landon Grainger embarked on a treacherous journey to the wilds of Canada in search of the true killer of athlete, Karli Davis. The evidence is strong against Reef, but Piper will stop at nothing to uncover who really is behind Karli's death and why. The duo come against some life threatening circumstances and also discover deep rooted feelings that are drawing them even closer together. Will they discover the truth before more people get hurt and die?

This was my first book by Dani Pettrey and even though it was the second in a series, I was able to follow along well and keep up with the many characters (the McKenna family has 5 members- Cole, Gage, Reef, Kayden and Piper). I love how a scene is set up so that it really looks like the person caught is the guilty party, but is not really. I was stumped, but loved how the author led the reader through the many avenues of investigation that kept my mind forming new ideas. I also liked the budding romances throughout that were not too mushy, but definitely enticing. If it's action, adventure, mystery, romance and suspense you want, Shattered is a good book to pick up and read today!

My review:
Veggie Tales has always been a favorite for me, but I really like how clear the lessons in this video are. There are two stories shared on this DVD as well as Silly Song with Larry: Happy Toothday. The Little House That Stood is the story of 3 builders who chose different materials for building but all were taught in order to make a house that would withstand anything was to build it on a foundation. Only one, Bob the builder, made the wise choice to build on a solid foundation. The other two builders found out after the huge flood washed away their houses that building that way was the best way. You will love all the animation, humor and of course all the different veggies along with three little pigs in a parable that shows kids to follow God so they can stand strong in the storms of this world. The second story "The Good Egg of Gooseville" is a funny look at what happened to Humpty Dumpty before he fell off the wall. Bob (dressed as an egg) is the Mayor and can't seem to care for his town so he decides to take a vacation to the big wall. He then sees that his town really needs him. This story is filled with every nursery rhyme you read as a kid. Be sure to check out the "bears" from Goldilocks! So cute!

My Review:
Have you heard of Six Sister's Stuff? I stumbled across their website not too long ago and saw some mouth watering and tasty recipes that I have tried in my kitchen. I LOVE what they offer. And here is their first cookbook full of great ideas, recipes, crafts and in full color! There are recipes for main dishes, slow cookers, sides, salads and desserts. There are also several crafts and other fun check lists like spring cleaning and 50 fun date nights. Each recipe is given it's own page with a story from the sisters and a photo that will entice you to make that dish right away. I tested a few recipes and I like the few unique twists of ingredients that brought out the flavors of the meal in a whole new way. The book goes on sale today and along with that, a challenge. I don't know if any of you took the Frumps to Pumps Challenge this month, but I feel like I did pretty good. I would say that I made my goal about 75% of the way. Not the best, but better than I was doing before.

I found figured out that my hardest thing to do was take a shower before the kids got up which was a goal I had. I do get up early, but I have my quiet time, exercise, get on the computer and whoosh, my time is gone and the next thing I know my son is telling me "good morning."

So the second week instead of just saying I needed to be dressed by 8 am, I decided that I needed an earlier goal. So I set my alarm for 7:30 to take a shower. I knew that if I did that I would dressed by 8. Believe me, with 2 kids I don't spend long in the bathroom. So that is what I've been doing.

Also, I am trying to plan my day the night before and specifically all the little things that need to be done. I try to get the hardest things done first. I heard somewhere that's called "Eating Your Frog."

And with that note, I plan to continue to work on my goal until it is a habit. I get up at 5am every morning. That is my habit. I have done that for years even when I had little babies because that is my only ALONE time. I desire it, crave it and need it.

And I hope that you will consider a Frumps to Pumps Challenge for yourself if you are struggling in any area like I was.

Stitch Fix Arrived and Results!

I bet you are all dying to hear about my Stitch Fix. Well, here is what I found on my doorstep.

And this was what was inside:

There were 3 tops, a cardigan and a scarf. There were styling cards with each top/cardigan.

Unfortunately I didn't have someone to take pictures of me, but I only chose one item. Can you guess what it was? You can't see it very well in the picture, but it is the black top (pictured below). The material is somewhat sheer, but I like that it was black and goes with everything I have and it doesn't show my figure (or lack thereof), but flatters me in a way that could be casual or dressy.

So here are my pros and cons:

PROS:
*Free shipping and return shipping
*Try on styles in the comfort of my own home
*Styling cards for ideas
*Everything did fit
*Fun surprise to see what I got
*A place online to evaluate and give suggestions for my next fix- I definitely told my likes and dislikes
*I can choose when my next fix comes
*Clearly labeled instructions and price sheet

CONS:
*Prices too high (each item was from $38-$68). I'm a Target and Thrift Store girl (enough said)
*I didn't like everything in the box even though it fit
*Not being able to choose the clothes
*The turn around was a bit quick (3 days)

A note about pricing-
The styling fee ($20) is also a credit. The styling fee is charged when the box is sent. Then it is subtracted from your total. And if I bought everything in the box I would get a 25% discount which in this box was $65. However, I just bought one blouse and so with the styling fee credit it was only $48. No tax, no shipping.

Over all, I thought it was a fairly fun adventure, but I wouldn't be able to do this every month. I might try it once each season to see what styles they send me.

Two Marriage Ebooks that I Recommend

Valentine's Day is this week. There are so many opportunities to show how much you love your husband. I have found two books that are very helpful for my marriage. I actually gave one of them to my husband for Christmas this year and we have been reading it together. Both books are fun and interactive.

For the past year I have been subscribing to To Love, Honor and Vacuum by Sheila Gregoire. She is fresh, funny and does not mince words. She is imaginative, direct and encourages women and men to pursue the best marriage they can possibly have. I loved her series last February "29 Days to Great Sex." Courting Cate by Leslie Gould is the story of Cate Miller, an Amish girl, who has a no-nonsense personality, interested in books, writing and wants nothing to do with marriage. She raised her younger sister, Betsy who longs to get married to Levi. Their father has put the law down: Betsy may not get married until Cate does. This presents a problem until Pete Treger breezes into town and starts working for Cate's father. He and Cate have a combative friendship, but eventually seem to enjoy each other's company until Cate finds out it was all an act. Or was it? Then her sister tells her news that causes Cate to seal a quick marriage to Pete which she immediately regrets and is stuck in a loveless marriage living with her workaholic in-laws. Cate comes to realize that she has fallen in love with Pete, but she is not sure if he feels the same. Will Cate and Pete have the marriage that they both long for?

I truly loved the beginning of the story when sparks flew between Cate and Pete. I identified with Cate in so many ways except that I did want to get married. However, Cate was very strong and opinionated and I thought she was a great match for Pete. This story has been retold in many ways namely the play, Kiss Me, Kate and the newer contemporary version in a movie, 10 Things I Hate About You. I knew the general plot, but I after Cate got married, it seemed that Pete immediately turned off his charm to her and she was manipulated to work like a maid for his parents. The last half of the story wasn't very appealing to me, but I understood the concept of the plot. But overall, it was a good read and not a typical Amish novel.

Jessna is 21 Months old!!

This little girl is now 21 months old!

She is my busy girl through and through. I can never sit down when she is awake.

She is so curious and gets into everything. She follows big brother around all the time, but she also will sit down and look at books or tear them (library books, of all things!).

She wants to color and we have done a little of that. She is messy as can be and still puts anything into her mouth like purple crayons!

She is saying lots of words and has a really silly giggle.

She can be picky about food and cry the entire meal time or gobble it all up.

She wants to put on her coat and shoes and go places.

She is not shy with strangers and she loves being picked up.

She still takes 1 nap and sleeps through the night.

She loves her baths and can put her clothes in the laundry and put other things away when I ask her.

She can walk up and down the stairs (not crawl!).

She is independent and very different from her brother. I have my hands and heart full with these two crazy kids!

Frumps to Pumps Challenge Week #1

Welcome to our first week for our Frumps to Pumps Challenge We will spend the next 20 days in this motivotional by Sarah Mae that is very inspiring. Every day there is a short devotion with a challenge.

This week we are going to find out who we are, our "why", why we need to dress differently to act differently, prophesying hope for ourselves and making the decision. Are you as excited as I am?

I have had NO fashion sense ever since I became a Stay At Home Mom. I usually wear jeans and a shirt (and neither fit too well after pregnancy). I rarely fix my hair (used to curl to perfection) and I just started wearing a little bit of makeup again. Basically I feel like a FRUMP!! Can anyone relate??

One of my greatest challenges is getting dressed in the morning before my kids get up. It takes a back burner. Oh, I do get my shower in, but I'm rushed and I definitely don't fix my hair.

My goal this month is to streamline my morning to include the things I like to do, but also take a good shower, put on makeup and wear clothes that say I'm not a FRUMP!

My Review:
Seth is a high school student who is forced to care for his two younger sisters while attending school, playing on the football team and holding at least two jobs. After a fight with another player, his coach saddles him to another after school job to make up for his inappropriate behavior. Seth is forced to work with a quiet, yet patient groundskeeper who has his own share of struggles.

This movie was a wonderful story about forgiveness and perseverance. Seth had a lot of rough situations to face and with the help of Abel he learned how to come to God and forgive the past and move forward. It was very encouraging to see a young kid turn over his troubles to the Lord and I like how Abel was honest with him about the forgiveness that he had to accept from God for all the things he had done wrong. A great family film with many lessons.

About Abel's Field

Left motherless by tragedy and abandoned by his father, high school senior Seth McArdle (Samuel Davis) faces enormous pressure as he strives to support his little sisters. At school, he endures the daily bullying of the football team. But fighting back only finds him singled out for punishment and assigned to an after-school work detail under the supervision of the reserved groundskeeper, Abel (SOUL SURFER’S Kevin Sorbo). Much to his surprise, Seth discovers that Abel may be the only one who truly understands his struggles. My Review:
Mystery, romance, and hidden family secrets make The Tutor's Daughter by Julie Klassen a page turning drama with plenty of action, adventure and questionable activities. Emma Smallwood and her father are summoned away from their own academy to tutor the two younger sons of former students, Henry and Phillip Weston. Emma's fondness for Phillip and disdain for Henry who treated her rudely while at the academy filled her with trepidation at the prospect of living in close quarters in the large estate. Emma meets many new people who she learns that she cannot trust especially when strange things start happening to her. She eventually confides in Henry although she can't comprehend why she starts to grow attached to him. Will Emma be able to prove that she is valuable member of society while holding dreams in her heart and feel loved by a man who might never be able to marry her?

Julie is a master at character description. There were many players in this book, but each had particular qualities and the author knew how to use them in the varied situations to make the plot move forward and also to entice the reader to be drawn further into the story. I was completely in love with the building romance through the story between the main characters. This is beautiful story filled with romance, mystery and history. The writing is excellent as the plots twists and turns and I was kept in suspense the entire time. I would love to see this a movie someday!
