Pawprint #47: To share or not to share space with Baby

A little human has been living with us for many months now. I am not sure yet what to call the little human, but I keep hearing the word Baby, so I should probably call this little human that. When Baby arrived, the first few months were difficult because Baby's cries were too much for a cat's sense of hearing. When Baby cries loud, Kauni and I had to hide in the farthest room of the house to give our catselves some peace. Nowadays, Baby's cries are more bearable, so there is no need to look for the most remote corner of our dwelling. However, my territories have been compromised! Since Baby learned crawling, the living room has been Baby's play area. Eventually, Baby is cruising along the sofa, one of the coziest places to have my day naps. I can't be on the floor nor the sofa while Baby is exploring these premises, or else my ears, tail, and fur will have to endure pulls from Baby's hands. My whiskers and other sensors may be functioning well, but I might not be fast enough all the time to avoid Baby's surprises.

Kauni, on the other hand, does not mind to be near Baby. I can not understand how can she be so patient with all the pulling, squeaking, squealing, and so on. She loves rubbing her face and body against Baby, and she watches over Baby like a cat mom does to her kitten!

I just can not picture myself in place of Kauni in the pictures above. Maybe someday Baby will be like my mom and dad. By then, I may allow Baby to pet or even carry me.

Pawprint #46: The same but different

First, I just realized I write titles in my Pawprints with only the first words capitalized, except when there are proper nouns in them. My theory is that I have become accustomed to reading prints in Finnish! That is no surprise. I was born in Finland and have been living here my entire cat life!

It is early morning, and I am not doing anything than wait for my dad to wake up (he feeds us delicious breakfast!). I suddenly remembered, "Hey, my Pawprints!" So here, an update of me and my dear friend Kauni.

Pawprint #45: Another cat year

The month of February has passed, which means I'm one year and two months older!

Big things happened last year, and the biggest was the MOVE! Leaving my previous home and settling in at the new place was so stressful. I remember, on my first day at our new home, I stayed on the bathroom because I found a nice spot there where I could hide perfectly when I needed to. At night, when it was all quiet, I slowly embarked on a tense but adventurous walk to investigate the whole place. You know a cat has to establish his own territories.

Kauni and I like this new place better: more space to roam around, more spots to sleep on and more corners to hide in. I can also say that I've become more accustomed to the presence of other humans. From the window, we can see humans, closer than before, playing with their kids or walking with their dogs.

With all the changes that happened, I grew and gained experiences. Most of all, it's good to know that I'm in good hands.

Pawprint #43: The blue box (Sininen laatikko)

I have mentioned before that Kauni and I love boxes. Occasionally, we find this cozy blue box lying open on the floor or bed, but my mom is not happy when we go inside it. One thing I noticed is that when this blue box is taken out of the storage, my dad (sometimes both dad and mom) goes out of the door with this box and doesn't return home for a few days or almost a week. So every time I see this box, I try my best to be in it, on it or beside it and put my scent on it even though my mom keeps on telling me to get away from it.

This cozy blue box, in terms of size, is just right for me.

Pawprint #40: Mystic green eyes that sparkle (Säihkyvät mystiset vihreät silmät)

Our eyes reflect light, sometimes, in a scary manner. But isn't it enchanting when the eyes reflect just the right amount of light and sparkle? I myself is charmed by Kauni's green eyes, a lot more when they glow.

Meidän silmämme heijastavat valoa, joskus pelottavalla tavalla. Mutta eikö lumoavaa, kun silmät heijastavat juuri oikean määrän valoa ja säihkyvät? Minut itseni hurmaavat Kaunin vihreät silmät, paljon enemmän hehkuessaan.

I wonder, do my copper eyes sparkle as captivatingly as Kauni's? No one has ever told me, and none of my pictures has shown me (except perhaps that picture of me in the closet).

Here's a song I want to share to all my cat-friends. My dad patterned it from the song Soft Kitty, which the Big Bang Theory sitcom character Sheldon Cooper asks someone to sing to him in bed when he is sick.

Pawprint #37: The fate of the blue ribbon (Sinisen nauhan kohtalo)

The silky blue ribbon looked good on Kauni.
-Silkkinen sininen nauha sopi hyvin Kaunille.

It was also nice to the touch, so I played a lot with it.

-Se oli myös mukava tuntoon siksi leikin paljon sen kanssa.

It wasn't tasty, but it was smooth and soft, so I licked it and tried to tear it.

-Se ei ollut maistuvaa mutta se oli sileä ja pehmeä siksi nuoleskelin sitä ja yritin repiä sitä.

Last Sunday, I accidentally swallowed the whole of it!!!

-Sunnuntaina vahingossa nielin sen kokonaan!!!

My mom and dad, as well as I myself, couldn't believe I managed to swallow it..

-Äiti ja isä sekä minä itsekin, emme voineet uskoa sitä, että onnistuin nielemään sen.

(WARNING! Some of the descriptions below can be harsh to the sensitive.)

I was taken to the vet. The doctor said that most probably, I will excrete the ribbon through my bowels because it's not too narrow and not too long. There's no need for an X-ray (the ribbon won't be seen anyway) and surgery. No worries of a ribbon stuck in my intestines, but I must take 10-20 ml of liquid paraffin!

After 2 days of dealing with an oily mouth and fur and instances of uneasy stomach, I finally defecated the ribbon. It came out compressed into a stool. Due to gastric acid, the ribbon's color turned into somewhat green. (I think it isn't really necessary to show the picture here.)

Lesson: Ribbons are dangerous. Don't eat them. When you swallowed one and you're lucky, you'll be able to successfully defecate it, otherwise, it could bring a lot of trouble to you.

-Minut on viety eläinlääkärille. Lääkäri sanoi, että luultavimmin ulostan nauhan, koska se ei ole niin kapea eikä niin pitkä. Röntgeniä ei tarvita (nauha ei näky kuitenkaan) eikä leikkaustakaan. Ei hätää, nauha ei ole jumissa suolissani. Mutta minun on otettava 10-20 ml parafiiniöljyä!

Kahdeksi päiväksi jouduin hoitamaan minun öljyistä suuta ja karvaa sekä vaivautuneiden vatsan tapauksia. Sen jälkeen, kakkasin nauhan vihdoinkin. Se tuli ulos tiivestettynä ulosteeseen. Vatsahapon vuoksi, nauhan vääri muutti jonkin verran vihreäksi. (Minusta ei ole todella tarpeellista näyttää kuvaa täällä.)

Läksy: Nauhat ovat vaarallisia siis älä syö niitä. Kun nielit nauhan ja olet onnekas, pystyt ulostaa sen onnistuneesti. Muutoin, siitä voisi aiheutua isoja vaivoja.

Huom: Luulen, että toista termiä käytetään kertoessa nauhasta (ainakin siitä, mikä täällä on kyseessä), mutta en ole varma onko sana "kaistale" vai jokin muu.

Wednesday, 3.10.2012. Almost 4 o'clock in the afternoon, I'm facing the sun which rarely appears to brighten these autumn days.

Se on vuodenaika jolloin pilvet ja sade usein voittavat. Epäystävällinen ja synkkä taivas pilaa ruskan päivällä

Pawprint #33: I'm blue, she's brown

Probably you already know that me and Kauni are of different breeds, I'm a Scottish Fold and she's a British Shorthair. There are long- and short-haired Scottish folds, I belong to the latter group. The long-haired counterpart of Kauni's breed is the British Longhair.

Not all Scottish folds are solid blue like me neither are all British Shorthairs brown classic tabby like Kauni. Our breeds may come in different coat colors and patterns.

At first I was confused why my mom and dad (and the cat doctor) say I'm blue when in fact I'm gray! Then I found an explanation in TICA's website where I also found good pictures of solid and tabby coated cats.

It was a Sunday afternoon; we had visitors at home. The little one was so cute, but I didn't dare go near him. Kauni, on the other hand, enjoyed his company. My shyness (or was it fear?) prevented me from roaming around, so I stayed on the tree most of the time. That, I think, amused them all.

Me tapasimme uuden ystävän viime perjantaina! Tämä hauska ystävä tuli isän mukaan Helsingistä. Se näyttää vihaiselta mutta se on todella ystävällinen meille. Kutsumme ystävämme lempinimellä Lintu.

-We met a new friend last Friday! This amusing friend came with dad from Helsinki. It appears angry, but it is actually friendly to us. We call our friend by the nickname Lintu.

Pawprint #28: Something green

Yesterday morning, mom brought home... plants! Me and Kauni got so excited.

-Eilen aamulla, äiti toi kotiin... kasveja! Minä ja Kauni, tulimme kovin innostuneiksi.

Mom said this plant is not to be scratched or bitten, so I just smelled the leaves and stems. But someone here has a bit of self-control problem. The plant's smallest leaf got a few scratches from Kauni's claws!

-Äiti sanoi, että ei saa raapia tai purra tätä kasvia, siis minä vain haistelin lehtiä ja varsia. Mutta täällä on joku, jolla on vähän itsehillinnän ongelmaa. Kasvin pienin lehti sai muutaman raapaisun Kaunin kynsistä!

Pawprint #26: When the terrifying creature is out

Me and Kauni are bothered by a strange creature which roams the house once or twice a week. The strange creature has a small mouth, a long neck, a stout body and cries in a disturbingly loud manner all the time. However, it appears to me that my mom is not threatened by the strange creature. It even obeys my mom without hesitation. Me and Kauni never dared to approach it. The moment it goes out of its cave, we immediately hide in a safe place or climb up on our tree. I'm wondering though if it really is a dangerous creature because it seems to be interested only in dusts and fallen fur. Have you ever encountered this kind of creature?
