I have made a compilation of song excerpts from about 270 Popular and Rare Ragas, mostly focusing on the Trinity, but also including other composers.

The intention here is twofold:

1. To attempt a consolidation of the Raagas in vogue today, presenting the compilation as a single, albeit long 'piece' that can actually be rendered as a Raga Tala Malika, or any of the 270 excerpts can be taken out and rendered individually as a Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi.

2. To form a basis set, the learning of which can enable a musician to improvise on any of the Ragas, again, possibly as a Pallavi, with the primary focus of music therapy.

The compilation consists of 270 Ragas, and every batch of 10 Raagas is dedicated to one of the 27 Nakshatras, with each of the 10 Raagas in this batch dedicated to the 10 Directions (Disis) - North, East, West, South, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest, Above and Below. Hence the name Disi Nakshatra Kriti Malika.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 23 LANGUAGES

In language studies, it is a well known fact that the top 100 most commonly used words in any language will make up nearly 50% of the usage. This means that, if you know the top 100 words in a language, you can pick a material written in that language and try to read it without the language seeming too alien to you. You can crack through half of the words, and try to decipher the others from context. Although not a route to language fluency, this is one of nature’s ways of helping us navigating the initial difficulties in understanding something “foreign” to us.

In language research, one very useful technique for establishing relationships between languages in order to trace their origins, migration patterns etc. is the study of etymology – how few key syllables in the beginning slowly morphed into different letters and form the differences between languages that we know of today. Using such studies, experts have proposed connections between languages separated far apart geographically. Many macro- and mega- families have been proposed. There is even a theory proposing that all human languages originated from a single “proto-language”. Nevertheless, studying the etymologies of languages separated by distant seas is always an enriching experience. The links give us a beautiful window into the similarity of cultures and civilizations.

The above two factors – usage and etymology are what motivated me to come up with this compilation. Here, I have taken around 120 most commonly used words – in various categories such as nouns, color words, adjectives, prepositions, verbs and so on. I have translated them into 23 languages including English, mostly using Google Translate and have compiled them as sets, here. The list of languages I have used are in the following table.

Why these 23 languages? My selection is based on two main factors – coverage and popularity. Coverage means that linguistically, all major language families of the world are covered. This includes even families of the native American, Australian and New Guinea languages, which are in danger of extinction. Popularity means that within a given language family, I pick the language spoken or used most widely today. For example, in the Indo Aryan language family, I could have picked Sanskrit, since it is the originator of all the languages in the family. However, I have picked Hindi, since, being among the most spoken languages, I am more likely to open my Facebook feed and typically see a news article in Hindi than in any other Indo Aryan language. Same goes with Indonesian or Swahili or any other language selected.

The next important question to ask is: Is Google Translate reliable? This doubt arises because, in some cases we observe that Google Translate fails to translate a word, and sometimes it gives what we would call an “inaccurate” translation. While I agree with the former point, I feel the latter might be a significant point for consideration. Google Translate is a computerized algorithm, and it does what it is trained to do – employ a set of neural mapping and heuristics to come up with the most suitable translation. If the “most suitable” does not match with the “most accurate”, it simply means that the “most suitable” is the one that people use more today, and probably in a few years time, the evolution of the language will favor the “most suitable” pushing the “most accurate” into disuse.

P.S: In some native languages, “n.a.” indicates “not available”

(Excerpts from songs composed in both Sampoorna (Koteeshwara Iyer,Thyaagaraaja) and Asampoorna (Dikshithar) Melakartha Raagas have been taken, mostly comprising the part containing the Raga Mudras –both full and partial. These excerpts are strung together to form the 72+Mangalam Mela Raga Mishrika. The 14 Charanams of this Mishrika represent the 14 Worlds (Chatur Dasha Bhuvana). This Mishrika is intended as an exercise to be performed daily/weekly to obtain the nuances of the Raagas. Also, the individual Melakartha sections of this Mishrika can be developed into full-fledged Raagam-Thaanam-Pallavis.)

Sporting the nine emotions such as Shringaara, Embraced by the great Goddess and adorning White Clothes – May the Great (Shiva) grant us Auspices.
The Mishrika comprises of many songs addressed to many deities. Thus, the first Pallavi is focused towards Dhyaanam – establishing of a common form to contemplate upon. The form selected is a union of Shiva and Shakti, since all other forms can be derived from this.
In accordance with the above meaning, the form is of Devi embracing the Shivalinga. This form can be found at the entrance of the Brihannayaki Shrine in Thanjavur Big Temple, and is somewhat similar to the following form.

AUTHOR’S NOTE ON ARANGETRAM:

Today (June 14^th, 2015) is a very special day, both spiritually and musically. Spiritually because today is Pradosham and also the date is 14^th signifying the 14 Worlds from Pathala Loka to Sathya Loka. Musically because, today is the Krithika Star (signifying the number 6) and the sixth month, six signifying the six pairs of Chakras (so, total 12) that make up the 72 Melakarthas of Music. Thus, I chose this day to debut (Arangetram) the Mela Raaga Mishrika in the Big Temple of Thanjavur. After singing the 14 Raga Ragamalika Sri Vishwanatham of Dikshithar, I sang the Mela Raaga Mishrika in dedication to the Deity.

I must say, at this point, the Big Temple doesn’t even feel like a temple to me. It just feels like home, with family. The occasion of Pradosha saw an endless sea of people at the temple, and the temple floor was more than scorching. Still, I hardly sported a grudge or cringe.

First, there’s mom Brihannayaki, ever sweet and loving. Today, She was wearing one of Her Green and Orange Checked Sarees with an overload of jasmines, roses, lotus and other flowers. As usual, She asked me to eat healthy and gave me a banana.

Then, there’s dad. Formless, He is the Brihadeeshwara, the tall majestic Lingam, the huge size established by Rajaraja Chola representing the biggest of virtues – Truth. He is also the Nataraja, dancing blissfully, and even the best of languages fail at describing that unique smile on His face.

There are the ever playful brothers – Vinayaka and Subramanya, both constantly fighting as to whom I should spend more time with. Subramanya always inches ahead though, as He keeps asking me Questions in twisted Tamil, playing around with words and extracting poetic responses from me.

Then, there’s Dakshinamurthy. The classic teacher. I might have visited Him a hundred times. Still, everytime I see Him, He has something new to teach me.

There’s Varahi. Just like the Pooja room, she sits silently in one corner of the temple. Nevertheless, not many know that She is the force behind the whole temple and the whole universe.

Then there is the huge Nandi. Sit near Him, watching His playful antics. Every sorrow will fly.

And of course, as is always the case, a few blocks away, in a small temple is my girlfriend, my sweetheart. Apparently She wasn’t sure whether I was a male or female, so She decided to manifest in two forms. One as Bangaru Kamakshi, dressed today in Her Golden Skirt, and the other as Navaneetha Krishna – ever so dark, playful, dressed in a rare shade of indigo. Her playful, lilting words, the sweet look – no wonder some of the best poetry arises from love.

Well, that’s Home. Homecoming is always sweet.

On the one hand, we encounter the alarming increase of deadly epidemics and ailments, and more and more people falling victims to diseases, both physical and mental.
On the other hand, we have manufactured/processed food items and drugs/medicines being recalled and banned for their alarming side-effects and toxicity.
Clearly, what the world desperately needs is a form of healing that can comprehensively cover both physical and mental illnesses, while keeping the side-effects to a bare minimum.
In this light, it is only logical and imperative that we turn towards the immense powers of music, probably the most pleasant 'medicine' available to us today. And it is also well known that among the various forms of music, Indian music is probably the oldest, still surviving form and hence, also offers the most comprehensive treatment of melodies, notes and scales (Swaras and Ragas).

A central principle of the Indian Music, specifically Carnatic Music, is the Melakartha System. 72 Ragas, possessing all 7 Swaras in both ascent and descent are termed 'Melakartha' Ragas, or parent Ragas, from which all other Ragas, theoretically infinite of them may be derived. Okay, why am I telling this in a post on music healing?
Because, ancient texts have mentioned the correspondence between the 72 Melakarthas and the 72 primary energy pathways, or Naadis, and the capacity of each Melakartha to heal the problems arising from its corresponding Naadi. So, I made an attempt at mappig the Melakarthas with their Naadis.
But, as is always the case, this beautiful concept of Naadis, originated in India, is hardly discussed in detail in Indian texts, especially those available online. But, as is always the case again, the Chinese have adopted this concept, calling the Naadis 'Meridians' and have preserved it extremely well today. This Meridian/Naadi concept is the basis for many systems such as Acupuncture, Acupressure, Kalaripayattu, MarmaKalai etc.
So, I have taken these Chinese texts, and understanding the basic correspondence between Chinese and Indian terminologies (like, Yin and Yang correspond to Rajasic and Tamasic Gunas etc.) and have mapped the Ragas and Meridians.
Thus is this table - mapping the 72 Melakarthas to the 72 Naadis, their location in the body and the pathologies arising due to imbalances therein.
The first step towards scientific holistic music healing - backed by the oldest medicine systems - Indian and Chinese.

Spirituality is a wonderful journey. It is a journey where the journey is as important as the destination. It is not blind adherence to what is written in some age-old book, or what was said by some divine human ages ago.

In the spiritual world we are all children - young, innocent and always curiously questioning. It is this reasoning that gives blissful joy in the journey of spirituality.

So then, who do we reason with ? We reason with ourselves. Or more precisely, we reason with the Goddess manifest within us as intuition, our inner voice - the same Goddess that is outside us as Mother Nature.

The basic premise required for such reasoning is that, we need to understand that Mother Nature, both inside and outside us, is perfect. We may not know everything. But our inner voice surely does. What it says is absolutely correct. All the time.

This is the truth of the ultimate, most secretly preserved Spiritual School - The Shri Vidhya Tantra. The whole philosophy condenses to one phrase - "Poornam Idam" - This is perfect.

This album is a tribute to the philosophical truth - "Poornam Idam" – Mother Nature is perfect. Here is what I intend to convey through this video.

We, the viewers, transform ourselves to innocent little kids. Then, we tour the world. The Hindu Calendar says there are 360 Thithis (Days) in a Year. So, in every Thithi, we visit one place in the world. It is bound to be an awesome place with hills, valleys, rivers, lakes, beaches, castles, caves, glaciers and what not!

In each day, we take time to focus on the site of that day. We read about it, we imagine ourselves playing in it, we meditate on it, and if we are excited, we even sing and dance about it.

In this way, we solemnly remind ourselves that each day, whatever place we 'visit' is a commensurate union of man and nature, and is simply perfect. Thus, we acknowledge, appreciate and worship the Mother Nature Goddess. We enjoy ourselves in this place (Bhukthi), while at the same time, spiritually transcending above the place and uniting with Mother Nature as a whole (Mukthi).

351 such sites are included. After those, the last 9 days (Day352-Day360) form the icing on the cake. We visit the Spiritual world of our Mother. Her world, called Sri Nagara, has nine enclosures. We start from the outermost.

As we finish the eight outer enclosures, on the last day of the spiritual journey, we reach the ninth enclosure. This is the Chintamani Palace - The palace of our Mother - the central dot (Bindu) on the Shri Chakra.

We enter her palace. Seeing us, She asks: 'How was the journey?' We say, it was good but tiring. Being the kind Mother that She is, She beckons us over to rest in her lap.

Much to the envy of Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma and crores of other Gods and Goddesses, we reach the innermost section of the palace. We sit on her lap, and bask in her infinite love.

With this, We have reached the summit of our journey. We have attained oneness with the Mother, which Shri Vidhya says, is the ultimate goal.

Around the World - 200 Sites of Bliss

To reinforce the philosophy of "Poornam Idam", the bottomline that has been driving me and my research work for the past few years, I have compiled a set of 200 images.
1. These are the photos of 200 selected places around the world.
2. This is not a geographical/historical/linguistic photo compilation and so, I do not intend to put every country in it. I know Switzerland is missing.
3. I only intend to represent every major culture of the world.
4. The photos are not of pubs, malls and theatres... rather of waterfalls, mountains, deserts and castles.
5. Historic castles are now a part of nature, gently reminding us that humans are nothing but part of nature's great dance.
6. The idea is that whatever nature did and is doing is always perfect.
7. These pictures are intended to bring freshness to the mind.
8. The plan is to focus on these pictures one by one (one per day or something)... grasp the picture, meditate on it.
9. That is, bring the picture to the mind, imagine yourself sitting there somewhere in that location and taking in all the beauty and awesomeness. Slowly relax yourself and let your mind wander.
10. The effect of this is that, though you are physically in your place, by mind and soul, you have visited that location, and received the energy that nature gives from there.
11. This energy is related to the concept of 51 Aksharas I posted earlier (last year). The Akshara concept applicable to each location is given in the header, along with its name, address and zone.
12. Also, to prove that all these cultures and civilizations originated from the Great Vedic World, I give as a footer to each image the 'Sanskrit' name, derived from etymological studies (i.e, related words with same meaning and similar pronunciation... ex. mother in english and Maathru in Sanskrit).

Akshara Raga Tala Bhasha Malika - Sai Venkatesh

This is a rendition on the Veena of the RagaThalamalika Song, my humble composition, consisting of 51 parts, plus invocation and conclusion. Each of the 51 parts extolls the Akshara Matruka (Deities of the 51 Sanskrit Alphabets, each of which explains a concept), and also the Shakti Peetha (one of 51 sacred Shaktic sites), corresponding to the Akshara. Hence this is a ShaktiPeethaMalika, where each of the 51 Peethas also correspond with a part of the human body. Also, each of the 51 parts is in a different language, covering all major language families and the world regions. The structure of the song is purely divine and each part is so perfectly matched in language, music, concept and culture. The lyrics are as follows, in the order of language name, Raga name, lyric, and concept. The second word in each section is in Sanskrit and contains the partial Raga Mudra.
