Ladies and gentlemen, let me present to you my brand new blog:

I have been wanting to venture into a new territory for a long time and I finally did it! The new website, The Eccentric Manifesto, will be a place to share my thoughts on current affairs, politics, the state of the world and general ramblings. As you may already know, I am currently studying politics and Russian at university in London and I feel like I need a place to vent my more academic thoughts :)

No worries - The Eccentric Manifesto is not a replacement for this website. I simply realised that they will most certainly attract different audiences and hence it seems like a good idea to keep them separate. The good news is that Sabina Supernova will, from this moment forward, be merely about fashion and my personal style.

In what seems to me like the outbreak of the closet hipster in me, I have been obsessing over all things vintage lately. Clothes, boutiques, books, songs... you name it! And so it should come as no surprise that disposable cameras managed to catch my fancy, despite being so fabulously unpractical. I'd like to say that it's the mystery behind it which excites me, but I think it's mostly the mere fact that I find the pictures pretty which drives me to use them. Here are just some examples...

My continuous girl crush on Lana Del Rey is taking on a whole new dimension. I listen to her every day, her songs play on a loop in my head. Have you heard of her? Welcome to 2012! It's been a year since I launched sabinasupernova.com (preceded by my "Pixie Dust" blog for those wondering why I have posts as old as 3 years) and while I have been updating very sporadically in the past couple of months, I'm generally happy with the direction this blog is going and am blessed to have such amazing readers :) My style has certainly changed since I've moved to London and I am hoping to document this transformation for you in the coming months.

Ombré

Guess what! I summoned up all my courage and finally did something with my hair! I've been falling in love with the ombré trend ever since seeing Rachel Bilson's, Ashlee Simpson's and Lily Aldridge's take on it, but I'm a giant coward when it comes to my hair, so I never really considered doing it. Going to university and being a *cough* adult *cough* is, however, giving me strange urges to be impulsive (which I suppose is exactly the opposite of what should be happening, but oh well!), which result into a wide array of results ranging from amazing to catastrophic... and this one was awesome! I decided to be a brave girl and did the deed myself in my friend's room for £6 to avoid the unjustified £140 price tag - turns out Boots bleach is equally effective and that I'm not a completely failed quasi-hairdresser. The £134 I saved shall be a good contribution to my clothes/shoes/drinks budget this Christmas!

I thought a slight sexual connotation in the title of this post might make my long-drawn absence a little easier to bear, but as usual I am probably wrong. I have not been kidnapped by the flying spaghetti monster and neither have I decided to go live with an African tribe and give up my access to things like sushi, high heels and the internet - no, I simply moved to London and began my hectic conversion into an adult/university student. It is hard work - I have to juggle great responsibilities like washing my underwear, occasionally buying food and sometimes even doing coursework!

Quite honestly though, I am living the life. Living la vida loca. And while I'm at it, I am wearing pretty clothes, too. I wore latex leggings to one of my lectures the other day. And I went vintage shopping in Camden Town today. I have not given up on fashion. I am just a little overwhelmed at the moment and so the blogosphere was not a priority for a while. But I am getting settled down now, having found an (almost) healthy balance between partying and studying.

I really miss blogging, I just haven't really figured out a way to incorporate it into my everyday life.

But once I do things will be normal again. Pinkie promise.

Do You Hate Women?

Have you ever experienced that pang of jealousy when a tall blonde girl walks past you on the street, looking like she was cut out of a magazine? The sinking feeling when you flip through the newest edition of Vogue and realize that all the models seem way more attractive than you? Have you ever heard a malicious voice in your head whispering "Slut!" as an attractive young woman turns men's heads on the subway? I have!

Just to clarify - I do not suffer from low levels of self-confidence, I do not recall having had my ego injured by mean comments from pubescent boys in the past and I am quite happy with the way I look. So why on Earth should I have these feelings? Do I hate other women?

Let me tell you a little story to illustrate my point. If you have been reading my blog for a while, you surely must have realized that I have a big passion for high heels. Well, my passion is not reciprocated by the majority of women in Austria where I used to live. Due to this, wearing pumps became sort of a rebellion as well as a fun game for me - I would casually put them on to do things like going shopping or running errands and count how many times I have been given a dirty look by a female passer-by or actually called a Schlampe (German for whore). Again, if you are a reader of my blog, you probably know that I do not dress like a prostitute and I can assure you that I am not employed in the sex industry. So why should another woman, not knowing anything about my background or occupation feel entitled to call me a hooker solely based on what type of clothes I choose to wear?

My hypothesis is that a woman's choice of clothes (provided that she is not dressed like this, in which case I understand) has very little to do with the way other women perceive her. If a grandmother or an obese lady - in other words a woman that is not defined by our society as a common object of sexual desire - walked past one of the female name-callers I have come across, my guess is that they would not say a thing. The feeling making these women feel negative emotions is called the inferiority complex. They feel threatened by the presence of another woman who they assume might be perceived as more attractive by men.

So where does this inferiority complex come from? It is fed to us by the media. Here is a little excerpt of Naomi Wolf's novel "The Beauty Myth" trying to explain how images of beauty in the media are used against women:

"The beauty myth is always actually prescribing behavior and not appearance. Competition between women has been made part of the myth so that women will be divided from one another. Youth and (until recently) virginity have been “beautiful” in women since they stand for experimental and sexual ignorance. Aging in women is “unbeautiful” since women grow more powerful with time, and since the links between generations of women must always be broken."

Who owns the media? Men, of course. That is unsurprising as it is primarily men own most, if not all, businesses in the world. If the male-dominated elite of the Western society succeeds in dividing women from one another by instilling jealousy in our minds, one can just imagine what tragic consequences will derive from it.

But what we fail to realize is that this process has already begun. If you said yes to any of the questions in the opening paragraph, you are directly influenced by this oppression. You are not having these negative thoughts because you are a jealous woman-hating fury, but because the makes of the modern culture are quietly whispering that you are not good enough everywhere you go. I say - ENOUGH!

Bye bye, Vienna!

Looks like the time has come for me to say goodbye not only to my motherland,

but also to Austria where I've been living ever since I was 13.

Goodbye Vienna! I will fly out tomorrow morning and at this time I will

already be in my brand new dorm room at University College London (UCL)! It's so exciting!

Even though I won't be leaving Austria for another week, I had to say my temporary goodbyes to the Czech republic aka my motherland! My family was kind enough to throw me an amazing party, not only to celebrate the fact that I'm leaving continental Europe and won't be around to bother them for a while, but also the fact that I will soon be 18 and any crimes I commit will finally be solely my responsibility.

Actually, they organized the get-together because they're all very sweet and I have to say that they outdid themselves... the party was amazing! We had a chef who was preparing some really yummy BBQ - shrimps with lime juice, vegetable skewers, veal cutlets with mustard and honey, grilled chicken - as well as some amazing cold starters like caprese canapés, a divine fruit plate (have you ever eaten cape gooseberry? it's so good!) or a giant bowl of pasta salad. But it wasn't only about the food - the venue was a beautiful peaceful Feng shui garden (which, admittedly, was no longer peaceful after the arrival of all my little cousin) and the staff were amazing. I la la loved my farewell celebration and I think it was a positive end to a chapter in my life, which will very soon come to an end.

I almost forgot to mention this - I had a total of three cakes! And they were all so good! Pretty much everyone in my family is obsessed with what we call harlequin cake (which is basically a huge pile of brown and white Parisian whipped cream) so it was gone within a millisecond, but I actually preferred the other two. Nobody took a picture of me holding the prettiest one, what a disgrace! Let me just tell you, that it was made of gingerbread and covered in a thick crust of dark chocolate. Go ahead and be jealous! ;)

Miracles Happen

I have been forced to rethink one of the most pressing philosophical questions of all times - do miracles exist? My stance that they do not was challenged after a phone call with my boyfriend some time ago... It was the middle of a grim, rainy afternoon and I was sitting on my bed, reading a book, when suddenly my phone rang. I answered the call in a sleepy voice, thinking nothing good could come out it. Well, color me stupid. It turned out that by sheer luck, my boyfriend and I got a free night in a hotel suite in a 5 star hotel in the center of Vienna! You can probably imagine my excitement when I found out - unsurprisingly this has never happened to me before and I can tell you, I made the best of it.

The evidence is overwhelming. Miracles must exist after all! ;) Here is some material to support my newly found answer to the question if miracles happen...

Antiquity

I've been interested in antiquity (as in ancient history) for quite some time - I find old civilizations like the Egyptians or the Romans incredibly inspiring and I find their engineering and scientific achievements really incredible. I found a really great way to learn a little more about them - a YouTube channel called AllHistories has really many documentaries about... well, all of history. Or some of it at least. They're quite nicely done actually, I wasn't even falling asleep or anything. It's quite a nerdy way to spend a sunny afternoon, but hey, don't judge me! :)

I'm beginning to feel like I should be doing more reading for my university, but I'm on an insane lazy streak which does not allow me. All my heart desires lately is to sit in front of the computer and watch reruns of TV series, which is something that's really strange for me. Until last year I've been an avid series hater, but after being introduced to How I Met Your Mother and The Office I've warmed up to them a little. And now I may have discovered just about the best thing ever. What is it called? The Real Housewives of New Jersey. It's just unbelievably believable - seriously! shocking, I know - and hilarious. I don't even hate the ladies or find them stupid as I do with reality shows like Big Brother or Jersey Shore, I really feel like they're real people with real emotions, issues and personalities. Ah, what a strange obsession for a girl like me!

I Got The Moves Like Jagger

Hello again! Ha, told you I'd be back soon. Didn't believe me, did ya now? Ya, I know, I've been a horrible blogger over the past few couple of months. First and foremost there were my finals, university interviews and all and then came the passionately anticipated holidays. Ah, what a magical word that can be for an IB student in Year 12. But alack alas, alas alack (I still know my Shakespeare, what a smart cookie! ;)), I survived and my fragile psyche is slowly recovering.

On a different note (did you notice how I always begin my paragraphs like this? I just can't seem to be able to justify making a jump to a new paragraph and feel the need to explain that decision to all of you somehow), my cousin just got to Vienna this Friday and she is an amazing photographer who actually bothers keeping up with all my bitching and whining about how the photos turned out. So props to her. The title is also a tribute to her, in a sense, we've become fairly obsessed with the new Maroon 5 song and kind of turn every single sentence we say out loud into a cover version of it. She even sang to me that she's going to the toilet. As I said, fairly obsessed. More like a nutcase, but oh well, 'nuff talking for the day.

Hairspray commercial r-i-g-h-t there. I'll give those poofy-haired models a run for their hard cold cash.

After yet another long long absence I am back to the blogosphere with a new post. I don't have any real reason as to why I've been gone so long, basically I just haven't been feeling very inspired and felt like I had nothing to contribute to all of you, my readers. Sometimes I feel like this blog is not growing, not moving anywhere. I feel like my outfits are uninspired, my photos aren't good enough... But hey, I am back now after all and I'm hoping to improve my blog so that it can continue to inspire you and hopefully grow along with me!

Enough rambling! Yesterday I went to see the movie Green Lantern and surprising as it is - I'm not much of a fan of superhero movies - I really liked it. Watching it in 3D I really felt like I was floating in some nightmarishly pretty galaxy, being pursued by a huge predator resembling the mummy who was eagerly lurking behind every corner, waiting to suck out my soul. In case you haven't seen the movie, I hope this wasn't much of a spoiler ;)

I would like to share with you a few photos from the dinner I wore this to - my parents and I were celebrating my beautiful mom's birthday in a restaurant, which I really like. It's called Dots and if you live in Vienna, chances are you've most probably heard of it. They serve what they call "experimental sushi" and I must say some of it is really creative - they have things like schnitzel sushi and some amazing makis with the craziest ingredient combinations. I do, however, have to admit that I probably like the design of the restaurant even more than the food itself and so here are a few photos four you...

Dreams Do Come True

My long absence has come to an end now! In all honesty, I can't even tell you what I've been doing all this time... no, it's not a secret. No grandma, it wasn't anything illegal! I think I've been hibernating or something, although clearly this is not the time of the year to do that. Internet hibernation, so to say. But I am back now and I am the bearer of good news - good news for me that is, I'm afraid. But you may join me in my ongoing celebrations and share my happiness if you like.

The news is - I received my International Baccalaureate (IB) results 5 days ago and not only did I get wonderful grades, I also got into the university of my dreams! If any of you reading this happen to live in London or even go to United College London (UCL), guess what - you'll be seeing me in September! I am beyond excited! :D

Darlings, this is my last post this week, because until next Sunday I will be in Ibiza, partying it up! :)

Today has been a hectic day. First and foremost, I had to go to school again, which is a place I avoid like fire ever since I finished all my final exams. And then... shopping with le boyfriend. Le boyfriend is not exactly a fan of shopping - and that's probably an understatement. He pretty much dies whenever he sees a shop packed with clothes - and it's not in the same way Rachel Zoe dies. Today he was surprisingly good though and he didn't even bite. I used that opportunity to stuff him into a colorful checkered short-sleeved shirt, which he ended up buying and I actually got a few kisses for my styling abilities. Oh, men. Only your mothers and girlfriends know what's good for you.

And as if that weren't enough, I have yet another thing lined up today. As many of you probably know, I currently live in Vienna and we are having a nice event here called the Vienna Fashion Night. Basically, what it means is that loads of shops stay open from 7 till 10 PM and they are having nice sales, champagne welcomes... in other words many of the things I like ;) Perhaps I'll see some of you there!

Man Down

Rum bum bum bum, man doooown. I think all my contempt for Rihanna has gone the second I heard her sing in a Jamaican accent while wearing a super long wig of fiery red hair.

Admittedly I have not been very productive these past few days in terms of actually doing anything but partying and dressing up, but hey - I think I deserve a real break for a while now, shutting my brain off. I recently discovered the Rachel Zoe Project and although I normally don't like such shows, I'm a bit hooked on this one - the crazy amount of drama in it is hilarious and Brad is so cute, I die! I don't like the rest of the people too much - Taylor's a horrible drama queen and Rachel Zoe seems to be one of those really fake Hollywood-ians. But on the other hand I sympathize with her, because I know what it feels like to be such a horrible workaholic and perfectionist.

When I'm not sipping Mojitos or browsing the internet, I also dream of the future. While that sounds poetic, what it really means is that I am trying to figure out what I should pack for my upcoming trip to Ibiza! I am so excited to ruin my liver that it's almost masochistic.

Here we are, back to my "Supernovae" series. This time I am presenting not one, but four talented superstars. They all come from the same country as I do, Czech republic, and they shed much bright light onto the name of my motherland. The first Czech fashion designer I present to you is Hana Havelková, the winner of the Mode Designer Cup in Frankfurt and a twofold holder of the Czech “Designer of the Season” award.

Even though her name might not ring a bell, you are already familiar with Hana's work if you watched Miss World back in 2006 – the winner, a Czech beauty called Taťána Kuchařová, wore a white gown designed by none other than this talented seamstress.

Hana Havelková's collections later went on to be shown all around the world, at prestigious events like Paris Luxury Trade Show, New York Fashion Week event at Platform 2, Haag or Exhibitions - Imprints of Prague Architecture in Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Vienna and Brussels. Since 1998 Hana Havelková also makes fashion show presentations for Škoda Auto (did you know Skoda is a Czech car manufacturer?), which have been held in large cities like Hamburg, Paris and Prague.

Hana Havelková's collections are connected by the thread of simplicity - clean cut clothes in predominantly neutral colors. While this might sound uninspired at first, what she achieves is the creation of timeless pieces, which are flattering to a variety of body types as well as appealing to a wide array of women. According to the information her manager provided to me, she is mainly inspired by

"the architecture of the past century ... cubism, functionalism, constructivism, and Bauhaus."

Being a successful fashion designer, one cannot help but ask questions like "what do you normally wear?" or "what's your closet like?". Her answer might seem slightly surprising - she confessed, that her wardrobe consists of

90% of black clothes with the rest being green, brown, navy or fuchsia, which she rarely wears.

She labels this as her déformation professionnelle, saying that despite the depressive colors in her wardrobe, her life is as colorful as peacock feathers.

Ever since school ended I've been running around town like a crazed raccoon - I'm not sure raccoons do that, but you can still enjoy this heart-warming metaphor due to my lack of knowledge about animals as well as a weakness for cute furry creatures. And since I didn't really get to wear high heels during my exams, I am making my feet permanently suffer now. Dresses and heels are pretty much the only thing I wear lately - a fact my boyfriend and the broad male public seem to enjoy...

So it shouldn't surprise you, that I wore this outfit simply for running errands. Better to be overdressed than underdressed!

Graduation!

So my recent absence can be explained in one short sentence: I just graduated! This Saturday, my class of 2011 had a final Graduation Ceremony and a ball in the beautiful Palais Auersperg. For now my slightly shitty photos of my precious dress will have to do, but here are a few snaps for you anyway!

First up is the ceremony at which I sang Knockin' on Heaven's Door...

And then the Graduation Ball! It was really beautiful - the venue, the clothes, the music... everything was amazing. I'm narcissistically in love with my brown dress, could you tell? ;)

Caught in a landslide,

No escape from reality.

I am free! I am completely finished with my final exams and high school as such! Wooo! It's so strange - every day I wake up and an endless list of all the things I could do runs through my stress-free mind. And then I just pick one... and go out and do it. As simple as that. It's such an amazing feeling, being able to do whatever I want and go wherever the day takes me, not worrying about deadlines I have to meet or places I have to go to. I'm on a responsibility diet this summer!

I am so glad to be back in the blogosphere! I've really missed you all, my dear readers :)

Check out this close-up of my nails... I got these little leopard-print sticker nails and they're amazing! I'll take a better photo of them for one of my next posts. Yes, don't you worry, there will be loads of "next posts" from now on!
