Samsung Juke U470

The good: The Samsung Juke SCH-U740 is a sexy, fashionable phone with an unusual design. It has an easy-to-use mechanical scroll wheel, plus features such as a built-in music player.

The bad: The Samsung Juke SCH-U740 is sadly lacking in features, with no 3G or V Cast support and no expandable memory slot. There's no video camera, plus it has a few annoying design flaws such as slick buttons and the need to turn the phone upside down to read the screen when it's closed.

The bottom line: The Samsung Juke SCH-U740 is a very stylish phone that will turn heads when you're out on the town, but its lack of features ultimately disappoints.

Samsung T429

This isn't the first time Samsung has repurposed a favored thin design. Just look at Alltel's Samsung SCH-R510, which was the third incarnation of that particular design. But even though it's not very original, the SGH-T429 is not unattractive. The slender profile (3.9 by 1.94 by 0.56 inches) remains eye-catching and the metallic blue color is a nice change from the standard black or silver. It's also relatively lightweight and feels comfortable in the hand. The slider mechanism felt a tad loose, but it wasn't a distraction.

Front and center is the two-inch display. It's typical of most Samsung displays in that it shows graphics and colors well, even if it supports just 65,636 hues. The simple menus are clean and user-friendly and aren't burdened by too much Flash animation. You can change the brightness, the backlighting time, and the font size, style, and color.

Teknic Rain Gear

Rainy weather is hardly conducive with riding, yet we do it anyways. Teknic Rain Gear acts as a shield against the wet weather making that rainy ride a little better. Suits, pants or jackets, Teknic Rain Gear makes waterproof versions of them all. Motorcycle Superstore carries a complete selection of Teknic Rain Gear for men and womenThe material on this looked to be exactly what I was looking for, a durable material that would withstand long distances. I ordered a large and the jacket seemed like a tent that I could hide everything underneath. Excited that I had good rain gear I my disposal I attempted to try on the pants, but was unable to pull them past mid-thigh. I was forced to return the product.

Samsung's SGH-I300

If you fancy a Windows Mobile smart phone but are put off by the lack of internal memory on handsets, your day may have dawned. Samsung's SGH-i300 offers all the features you always get with Windows Mobile smart phones, plus a 3GB hard drive -- a first for UK mobiles. You will pay for having all that memory in two ways: the i300 is a little larger than the average Windows Mobile smart phone, and you'll have to forego the very latest version of the software, as it runs on Windows Mobile 2003 and not the newer Windows Mobile 5.You don't need to part with a great deal of hard-earned for it, though. The i300 is exclusive to O2 as we write, and it will cost you £49.99 on a range of tariffs starting at £19 a month, although Carphone Warehouse is offering the handset free on some of the more expensive tariffs

Samsung E760

The Samsung E760 is a clamshell phone with an attractive silver case and a round display on the front. Inside, things are more conventional-looking, with a normal keypad and a good quality 262k colour display.

The novel feature of the E760 is the motion detector user interface / beatbox. The phone detects movement, so you can skip from one MP3 track to another by a shake of the phone. Moving the phone upwards or downwards adjusts the volume. We think this is a bit gimmicky, but some people like it.

The phone also has a good set of features - 1.3 megapixel camera, video recorder, stereo MP3 player and plenty of memory for storing videos and music. Battery life is below average and this is the phone's only real let-down.

Samsung E730

Samsung, well known for designing cute yet practical phones, has again created a compact handset that comes in a glossy black finish reminisant of the D500. But instead of the D500's slider form factor, the E730 is a clamshell model, which touts its MP3 capabilities through dedicated music controls (play, rewind and fast forward) on the front of the flip. Above the three buttons is a 96 x 96-pixel screen that uses organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology to conserve power. As you flip open the phone, the E730 plays your choice of one of four sounds, such as a cricket chirp or a harp glissando. We don't really know the purpose of this other than to draw attention to your shiny new handset, but it does add a quirky element of fun to the phone. The internal screen is bright and colourful (up to 262K) but it's a little on the small side. The menu consists of nine cartoon-like icons laid out in a grid, while the home screen shows the time, date, battery and antenna strength on top of wallpaper of your choosing. We wish Samsung would increase the number of indicator bars on the battery meter to give us a more accurate representation of remaining power. On full capacity it shows three bars, which seem to last for ages, but the remaining two go down so quickly we barely knew the battery was draining before it cut out on us.

Clamshell handsets don't get much smaller than the Samsung E720. At just 91 by 45 by 23mm and weighing a mere 90g, you'd be hard-pressed to find a smaller, lighter model. You can treat this as an any-time handset -- you don't have to have capacious pockets to have access to its punchy features. One of the great plus points of this phone is that it plays music and provides controls to do so without flipping open the clamshell. Beneath the screen are three buttons that look just like the standard play/pause, forward and back buttons on an MP3 player.Above the reasonably large TFT front screen sits a lens with LEDs on either side. Around the edges you'll find a shortcut button for the camera on the right and a volume rocker on the left, which is ergonomically placed. We liked not having to hunt around for it during calls. Also on the left, and protected by a cover, is a mini USB connector for linking by cable to your PC if you don't want to use the built-in Bluetooth and for connecting the supplied stereo headset. It doesn't have infrared capability or a standard headphone jack. The overall styling is not unlike that of a computer mouse, with the top end deeper than the bottom and a sharp curve towards the hinge of the clam. It's rather pretty and it's comfortable to hold in the hand when it's closed. It feels very solidly built.Open the clamshell and you see a large numberpad that uses most of the available space and offers large and well-spaced keys. The usual pair of softkey buttons and navigation pad sit above the numbers. For all its size, we found the numberpad unresponsive, and the navigation pad slightly fiddly to use.

Samsung E530

Looking at the petite size and lavender pink colour scheme of the Samsung E530, it doesn't take long to realise that this is a girly phone! Samsung's marketing blurb suggests that the E530 is the perfect shopping companion. We don't know about that, but it's certainly a lot less trouble than trying to drag a bloke into a clothes shop!

Despite its girly image, this is a high-spec camera phone that can almost match the Samsung D500 for features. The phone is equipped with a megapixel camera with an integrated flash and zoom, that can also record video (at lower resolution). The quality of the screen is high - a bright active matrix display that can easily be seen in daylight, with 262,000 colours and high resolution. There's a built-in MP3 player (with stereo output to headphones), MP3 ringtones, and a selection of games. There's even an exclusive set of "lifestyle features" with intriguing names such as "Fragrance Type" and "Pink Schedule". We have no idea what these are for or whether women really want that kind of stuff, but the E530 has got them.

Samsung E350

When it comes to buying a new handset you don't always have to look at the most expensive options available to get the range of features you need.

Take the SGH-E350 from Samsung, for example. Despite an obvious omission -- Bluetooth -- and an inability to expand the internal memory, this handset has a few tricks up its slider, including a reasonable camera, a nifty MP3 player and a handy voice recorder. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's not meant to be at the cutting edge and it won't blow your budget either.

We found it free on a £20 monthly tariff from O2, for example, or for £120 on Orange pay-as-you-go and £130 on pay-as-you-go from O2.

The SGH-E350 belongs to that rare genus of handsets, the lesser-spotted slider. This means it is relatively small, and at just 45 by 85 by 21mm you should be able to carry it in pretty much any pocket. It's light too: its 75g makes it a real featherweight.

Samsung D600

The Samsung D600 is an upgraded version of the highly-rated D500 and was voted Handset Of The Year at the Mobile Choice Awards 2005. It's two years old now, which is pretty old by mobile phone standards, but now that the D500 is no longer available, the price of the D600 has dropped dramatically, and we think that when priced under £100 on Pay as you Go, the D600 is still an outstanding phone. he D600 is very similar in appearance to the D500, sharing the same slide-up form, but there are some subtle changes to the design. The phone is thinner, but slightly longer and wider. The keypad layout is basically the same, but with some small styling differences. The D600 is available in a choice of black and grey colours.

The slide-up form factor has proven to be very popular. Like a clamshell, it enables a large screen to be placed within a compact phone design, and it has an advantage over a clamshell in that many of the phone's features are conveniently available on the front face. A gentle push will make the slide mechanism open and close automatically, giving access to the keypad below. This design has now been in use long enough to dispel any initial concerns about its durability.

MP3 and MPEG4 are both formats which can be stored for playback on the Samsung D510.

Samsung MM-A880

Let's be honest--many of the extra features that manufacturers cram into cell phones are of limited appeal to those who mainly want to use their handsets to make calls. To be sure, the Samsung MM-A880 sports a ton of multimedia bells and whistles, but in this case, its best feature is also its most useful. Thanks to its excellent voice-activation capabilities, the MM-A880 is a fine choice for those who like or need to place calls while driving. Sprint PCS is offering this phone for $180 with a two-year agreement--a good price, considering how much is packed into the unit. The Samsung MM-A880 sports the same basic look as other handsets the manufacturer has designed for Sprint PCS. With this model, however, the brushed-silver casing is attractively accented on the outer trim by a slight shade of lavender. That said, it's not too flashy to whip out in the middle of a business meeting. It's fairly compact at 3.35 by 1.73 by 0.93 inches but a touch hefty at 4.7 ounces. The postage stamp-size external display supports 262,000 colors and shows the date, time, battery life, signal strength and caller ID (where available). It also serves as a viewfinder for taking self-portraits, and you can assign pictures taken with the integrated megapixel camera as screensavers or as photo caller ID for individual contacts. Above the screen is the camera lens and a small flash.

Samsung SCH-A950

Samsung continues to refine its 3G flip phone designs with the sleek, eye-catching SCH-A950 for Verizon Wireless. Complete with a 1.3-megapixel camera, a TransFlash expansion slot, Bluetooth, a speakerphone, and a quartet of music controls below the colorful display, the stylish SCH-A950 just might knock the Motorola E815 off its pedestal as our favorite Verizon V Cast phone--the bigger but flatter Razr V3c notwithstanding. At a reasonable $130 (or $80 with a two-year service plan), the Samsung SCH-A950 ranks as one of the most affordable 3G phones we've seen from a major carrier. That said, we're as annoyed as ever by Verizon's continued policy of limiting Bluetooth access to wireless headsets and forcing MP3s to be converted to WMA format for playback on the phone. With its silver curves and glossy red trim, the Samsung SCH-A950 is certainly a looker. On the sides, it has the same oval-shaped stereo speakers as Sprint's Samsung MM-A920, while the camera lens and 1.1-inch, 65,000-color screen on the outer flap also look familiar. The big change, however, is the addition of a large jog dial just below the external display that's surrounded by buttons for next, skip, play/pause, and stop. Pressing and holding the play button when the phone is closed launches the phone's music player, while the jog dial lets you scroll through playlists, scan forward or backward within a song, and select a track for playing--similar to "scrubbing" on an iPod. Although it was a handy feature overall, the phone's scrollwheel was a bit small for our thumb. At 3.4 by 1.9 by 1.0 inches and 4.6 ounces, the solidly built SCH-A950 is exactly as large and heavy as the Motorola E815, but it fit better in our jeans pocket, thanks to the welcome lack of an external antenna.

Samsung SGH-E335

Increasingly, cell phone manufacturers and carriers are recognizing that a growing percentage of their customers are tweens who use their phones far differently than mobile professionals. Satisfying this younger market is the Samsung SGH-E335 for T-Mobile, a glossy, dark metallic blue clam shell phone in the shape of a rounded oval, only slightly larger than a bar of travel soap. Along with a VGA camera and a Web browser, the E335 includes AOL and Yahoo instant messaging--key communications technologies for tech-savvy kids. With no sharply protruding antenna and a petite keypad obviously designed for still-developing fingers, this is the perfect phone to hang from the belt loop of baggy cargo pants or to tuck into tight front jeans pockets. It's also fairly priced at $179 or cheaper with service. At just 3.3 by 1.8 by 0.9 inches and an egglike 3 ounces, the largely unadorned Samsung SGH-E335 flip phone feels like a water-smoothed rock. That said, we did like the blue and silver colors. On the mobile's front flap is a 1-inch-diagonal blue-tinted monochrome display. It shows the date, the time, battery life, signal strength, and caller ID (where available), and the reflective off-white text is easy to see. You can't change the back lighting time, but the blue text was readable even with it off. Since the display is monochrome, it's fairly useless as a viewfinder for self-portraits when the camera is on. Speaking of which, the camera lens is just above the display, while below it is a white LED that flashes blue when a message is pending--it's not a camera flash. You can turn the light off if you wish.

Samsung PM-A840

With every new wave of cell phones, consumers are being offered more and more features for less and less money, a trend exemplified by the Samsung PM-A840, available from Sprint PCS. In addition to the admittedly low-grade VGA camera, a speakerphone, Web-surfing capabilities, and a simple yet striking style that aids instead of impairs ergonomics, the light and compact PM-A840 offers superior volume and sound quality. Originally priced at $229.99, the Sprint PM-A840 is available for as low as $59 with a service contract. The sleek style on the Samsung PM-A840 hardly jumps out at you, but that's not to say it isn't remarkable. Rounded edges and an internal antenna make for few extremities, while the silver trim bordering the black face allows visibility inside a dark purse. At just 3.5 by 1.9 by 0.9 inches and 3.2 ounces, the PM-A840 also slides easily into tight pockets. The postage stamp-size external display is monochrome, but it shows the date, the time, battery life, signal strength, and caller ID (where available). You can't change the backlighting time, however, so the face goes completely black when off. The camera lens sits above the display. You won't find a flash or a self-portrait mirror, but the external screen doubles as a grainy, barely visible viewfinder if you activate the camera with the flip closed. Below the camera-activation key on the right spine is a key with a speaker icon. Holding this button activates the Voice Commands function. With the flip up, pressing the same button once also brings up a list of recently made calls. On the left spine are the volume toggle and the headset jack.

Samsung X810

One of the keys to a successful home-theatre-in-a-box is simplicity, and Samsung may have just delivered this with its new HT-X810 sound bar system. Basically, if you can plug in a power cable you can set up this system. This is because almost everything about the Samsung is wireless — from the subwoofer to its support for Bluetooth devices. In keeping with the curvy looks of Samsung's past ranges, the HT-X810's main module has a rounded bottom bezel, sides and speaker grille. It's quite a wide unit at one metre across, and is designed to complement 42-inch screens. It's also wall-mountable with the ports at the rear angled so cables won't break off.

The digital readout is small and a little hard to read due to the high gloss finish, but the capacitive play controls along the other edge are quite nifty. One minor quirk we found though was that only the Eject button on the unit itself can both "open" and "close" the DVD mechanism. Meanwhile, the remote's Eject will only eject.

This feature allows you to send any pictures you wish to whomever you want via Verizon Wireless’ Picture Messaging. The SCH-A850 allows you to store MP3’s and download features such as new JAVA games and wallpapers with its WAP 2.0 wireless web browser. Text messaging and picture viewing has never looked better and you will enjoy playing various mini-games on the SCH-A850’s bright 65K-color, 128 X 160 pixel internal screen. The Samsung SCH-A970 supports a 3G EV-DO network, Bluetooth, an MP3 player, a TransFlash slot, a speakerphone, and a 2-megapixel camera and camcorder with optical zoom. Verizon Wireless's latest 3G V Cast phone, the Samsung SCH-A970 is a compelling package of multimedia and communication tools. Along with support for Verizon's high-speed 3G network, the handset offers a 2-megapixel camera/camcorder, an MP3 player with external playback controls, Bluetooth support, and a TransFlash card slot for additional memory. The phone is bulky, however, and its fancy features sometimes fall short, with spotty EV-DO coverage and subpar photo quality. Still, the A970 will tempt those looking for a phone that supports Verizon's high-speed data network. The Samsung SCH-A970 is available for a pricey $349. Call the Samsung SCH-A970 the anti-Motorola Razr V3. At 3.7 by 1 by 1.84 inches and 5.07 ounces, this handset is hefty. And while there's no protruding antenna, the A970 won't slip easily into your pocket. But that's also the case with Verizon's other 3G phones such as the LG VX9800, so we didn't mind it too much. The all-silver case makes it appropriate for business settings, and the exterior display (see below) becomes a mirror when the backlighting is off.

Samsung D550

Samsung has announced a new sound bar home theater system, featuring two HDMI inputs and a wireless subwoofer. Samsung’s D550 LCD 3D TV, with its Slim, Crystal TV design, is ready to transform your whole viewing experience. Amazing features like the Full HD 1080p picture clarity and the HyperReal Engine merge images together for unbelievable detail. Other features include the enhanced connectivity via AllShare and ConnectShare Movie, which provides viewers with easy access to their multimedia content. The Samsung Anynet+ remote then adds fingertip control to your home entertainment, and makes watching TV even more enjoyable. LAS VEGAS--A ton of inexpensive, decent sound bars came out in 2010, but for the most part they lacked HDMI inputs, forcing you to make separate audio/video connections or use your TV as a switcher. Samsung's HW-D550 is an update to last year's HW-C450, with the big improvement coming in the form of two HDMI inputs. Even better, both inputs support both 3D video passthrough and ARC.

Samsung MM-A920

Compact, sleek, and crammed with multimedia features, Samsung's MM-A920 may prove irresistible for music and video fanatics alike. Armed with Bluetooth and a 1.3-megapixel camera, as well as access to Sprint's high-speed 3G EV-DO network and the carrier's new but pricey Music Store, this small wonder makes for a tantalizing addition to Sprint's multimedia phone lineup. That said, we wish the phone's video and music players were better performers, and we were annoyed by the partially crippled Bluetooth connection. At $350, the MM-A920 is squarely in the middle of Sprint's multimedia-phone price range, although you can knock the price down to a reasonable $180 with a two-year contract. The Samsung MM-A920 isn't that flashy as far as multimedia phones go; in fact, its all-black shell looks decidedly nondescript, and it's a far cry from Samsung's slim MM-A900. That said, the twin silver speakers that sit on either hinge of this flip phone will clue in onlookers to the MM-A920's music-mindedness, as might the player buttons that lie beneath the external screen. The handset itself is about the same size and weight as other flip-model 3G phones we've tested (measuring 3.6 by 1.9 by 1 inches and weighing in at 3.8 ounces), although the welcome lack of an antenna makes the MM-A920 more pocket friendly.
